[Drama Chat] The drama that wrecked your heart
by missvictrix
Whether you’re a new fan, or a veteran drama watcher with decades under your belt, chances are we’ve all experience the same thing: that one drama that wrecked us. Okay, maybe it’s more than one, but I’d wager the list of dramas that laid waste to your emotions is smaller than the ones that didn’t.
For me, that drama will always be Answer Me 1988. I can’t rewatch it, I can’t revisit it, and I can’t even think about it without getting a weird feeling in the pit of my stomach.
Part of this is because I live-watched it as a distraction when my family was going through a crisis; part of it is because of how real all of the characters felt, and how attached I became to them. But of course the biggest reason is the utter devastation I felt over the conclusion of the Jungpal love line. Good God, that hurt. Even so many years later, it still feels like it just happened, and like someone punched me in the stomach and then walked away without even looking back after I collapsed. Pain aside, my hat is off to writing that can evoke such strong and long-lasting emotions.
So, what was the drama that wrecked your heart?
Let the chatting begin!

Mr. Sunshine broke me, I cried so hard I couldn't breathe. All period dramas are inherently tragic especially if based on history, you know the good guys will die. I can't rewatch it, but if I could erase one drama from my memory to be able to relive it for the first time, it would be Mr. Sunshine.

Reply 1988 is the only time I cried because a character got rejected. I think I cried more for Junghwan's broken heart than my own...
I was so angry at Seven Days Queen for teasing me the way it did at the end. It was just plain mean. I will never forgive that drama.
Move to Heaven is the only drama that made me cry at almost every episode.
Not a kdrama but I did cry more than a litre of tears watching the Japanese drama 1 Litre of Tears. The fact that it is based on a true story...ouf.

The fact that I had a hard time racking my brain for an answer tells me I don't watch a lot of kdramas after all, lol. I guess the closest one would be Answer Me 1988's last few minutes. It triggered a huge wave of nostalgia in such a short moment. While the show never really made it into my top 5, I can't recall any other drama that had me in that much tears.

The one that immediately comes to mind is Fated to Love You. One scene in particular, where Jang Na-ra's character finds the secret room and watches the videos Jang Hyuk left for himself because of his condition. It flashing back to various scenes with her gaining context, and I still can't watch that scene without bawling. So good.

I love King2hearts and yes, that was cruel! But I was lucky enough (I guess?) to be forewarned which made it easier. But even forewarning doesn’t help sometimes - it was obvious the King was going to die at start because he had to in order for the Prince to take the throne, but I still cried so much.

If getting wind of what happened in episode 19 the day it aired counts as forewarning, then, yes, I had it too (a decade later, I still have not watched, nor will ever watch, the episode). If I'm being honest, I didn't care for the rest of the drama (sorry!!), but if he hadn't.... y'know... I would probably say I loved the drama anyway, just because of him.

Surprisly, the scene that made me the most cry with Eun Si-Kyung wasn't the end, but when he's driving to see his Dad after he understood his implication in the King's death. I still listen the instrumental OST from this scene.

Almost all dramas made me cry, if not all, since I am such I cried at and for everything. The most memorable scenes that stuck with me are:
1) Lee Seunggi in My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho (his crying scene where Shin Min Ah disappeared)
2) Yoo Inna in My Queen In Hyeon (that crying scene in the rain)
3) IU in Ahjusshi. What a helpless and lonely life she was living.

Reply 1988 is my all time favorite! I think it is one of the best shows I have ever seen. It has so many emotional scenes but the one that wrecked me was Bora's wedding. That scene when Dong Il and Bora were reading their letters for each other just hit home for me.

For me, the drama I cried watching the most is The Gu Family Book. The last episode destroyed me. I'm not even really sure why. It's not a really well written or acted show, and it's actually kind of cheesy overall. But I was so invested by the end and ready for the happy ending that was obviously coming. After all, cute cheesy light historicals always have a happy ending. But then. Then the writers just decided to kill of our female lead and we spend a good portion of the last episode with her slowly dying and saying goodbye to everyone. I was ugly crying so hard, absolutely sobbing, as my promised happy ending got ripped away from me. That is an ending I can never forgive the writers for.

The k drama which broke my hear to pieces the most is the The Light In Your Eyes. The tears which started falling at the 10th episode ending did'nt stop for even a bit up to the 12th episode finale. What a twist!!! I won't be spoiling it here. Utterly loved that drama and made broke my heart into million pieces. What a strk contrast between the beautiful dream like conversations and the utter reality of what was happening. Sobbed like a baby.
Other drama which made me sob like that but actually did'nt leave much impact was 49 days. I don't know whether I like that drama or not.

Yes! The Light In Your Eyes packed a punch.
Though I also got so mad at this drama for how she treated her son.
(Also I keep getting the title mixed up with The Smile Has Left Your Eyes which is somewhat entertaining and somewhat frustrating.)

1. The king 2 hearts: I shed tears of blood for Earnest Bot, and the love of his life.
2. Goblin (hated Kim go eun's characterization - that’s my only gripe with this drama which I otherwise loved but would never rewatch it as I cringe every time she comes on my screen): will never live down the feeling of realizing the fate yoo inna’s and the grim reaper’s character had to face. It’s just painful to think she and him spent the rest of their lives alone.
3. Prison playbook: pierced my heart with the ending for loony! But that’s realistic k guess.

Agree with Goblin, but I believe the reasons for Kim Go Eun's characterization at 19/20 was a directing choice to show a big differentiation between her character at that time and at 29. Having said that, I wasn't a big fan of the more exaggerated youthful characteristics. However...the first scene that killed me in Goblin was...Kim Go Eun's wretched sobbing on the rooftop after the Gobin turned to ashes.

Yoo In-na and the Grim Reaper (Lee Dong-wook) were loved by so many people as "The Goblin Couple" that the Drama Lords ended up creating the rom-com TOUCH YOUR HEART for them as a sort of karmic apology.

Since you asked...
Queen Seondeok: When Princess Cheonmyeon dies and Deokman loses her s***. In the end, when Bidam tries to get to Deokman but is unable to tell her and ends up just mouthing her name (so close but so far away).
18 Again: When Woo Young signs to his dad after the game. When Dae Young/Woo Young is on the basketball court crying/pleading to go back to his older self.
Flower of Evil: When Hyun-soo and Jiwon meet/talk/cry after he finds out that she knows who he is. When Hyun-soo thinks that Jiwon died.
Winter Sonata: The whole drama where Yoo-jin (main girl) longs for Joon-sang (main guy) when gazing at Min-hyung (main guy).
Delightful Girl Chun-hyang: Every time they don't have trust/faith in each other (e.g. elevator scene). When Chun-hyang visits Mong-ryong at the bar where he's passed out and has crumpled their photo. When he collapses at the airport after she leaves.
Hi Bye Mama: Kang Hwa's guilt for Yoo-ri's death then feeling torn when she comes back. When Yoo-ri was able to comfort Kang Hwa (good kind of wrecked). Min Jung period; her loving Kang Hwa. Yoo-ri's parents crying for her after she died.
Mother. The whole thing!
Fated to Love You (Korean): His and her longing for each other. Cabin/rain scene where Lee Gun comforts Mi Young with his words and cares for her when she is sick (holds her hand).
Go Back Couple: Jin Joo and her mom.
It's Okay Not to Be Okay: When Gang-tae reads Zombie Kid (Gang-tae and his mom).

Thank you for remembering these! 18 Again, Go Back Couple, Hi Bye Mama, many of these scenes you mentioned had me in pieces.
Reading all the comments I realized that I haven't watched that many dramas after all - and probably won't. These days I was thinking about starting Reply 88, but I'll steer clear of it now. Reading everyone's comments, I realize the old time K dramas are more tearjeaker than the new ones. Or it is me getting older 😌 Who doesn't cry when Song Hye-gyo died at the end in Autumn in My Heart? 😅
The last time I bawled my eyes out for K drama was the spesific scene in Alice (I hate that drama with passion), I think ep 15 (?) when Kwak Shi-Yang character first hearing Kim Hee-sun's voice message from past future which saying she missed him, sorry she couldn't say goodbye and made him promise to take care their child. She knew she couldn't meet him again and he knows he is going to die saving his child. Me: Criess....... so much emotion in very short scene and well acted from both actors.
I think C drama is one that is penchant with sad ending these days. K drama, now, seems more diverse in storyline, genre, and ending (open ending included).
The newest one is Someday or One Day. Too close in hit home, impossible not to cry. ha ha ha 😂

I think that the idea that the old ones were better is simply a reflection of the fact that we remember only a few out of hundreds and forget the rest.
After all THE RED SLEEVE CUFF is definitely one of the all-time heart wreckers and yet it only completed broadcasting a couple of months ago.

Or maybe we or I am not that eazy to cry over dramas as I were before. Maybe I grow cynical, instead crying I'm laughing over sad love story. Saying get over it over OTP break up. If couple doesn't end with happy ending while some people or things are just not meant to be.
Who knows? 💁♀️
I watches so many remakes of Yisan love story, while I still got teary eyes but I cried little less.
Maybe I watch so many dramas, so I don't change that much.

A number of you lovely beanies have eloquently written about why Mr Sunshine, Reply 1988, Queen for 7 days, Flower of Evil, Because this is my first life and TRS (despite its many shortcomings) were so indelibly heart shattering. I second all of that.
But what I want to add to this list is a drama which admittedly has many flaws but due to its central luminous performance made me literally sob in pain. I can’t rewatch it even though I have missed seeing that glorious acting tornado on screen: Kim Woobin or Woobie to me (😂🥰 in Uncontrollably Fond. What can I saw about how powerful a presence he is in UF which has so many illogical and mystifying threads but despite all that, is enlivened by the powerful, deeply felt, boisterous yet heart rending performance by Woobie. He has some range. Yes, he does.
I was reluctant to watch UF at first because of my deep distaste for Heirs but glad I came around at the urging of a friend otherwise I would have missed out on seeing Woobie before his heartbreaking cancer diagnosis and subsequent years long hiatus took him away from our screens. Now that he has fortunately recovered, I look forward to seeing his new work but will always have a tender place in my heart for Shin Joonyoung.

And, I shouldn’t have forgotten Made in Heaven and Lost. The former was consistently moving but I particularly bawled at the episodes involving the overseas adoptee, the gay lovers and the cabinet full of shoes. With the latter, the pervasive sense of sorrow and loss was not always immediately tear inducing but nevertheless, it added up to an overall heart wrenching viewing.

Since I started a couple years ago, I've learned that Korean writers are really good at wrecking your heart, so I'm real careful now about what I watch. Early on, I saw MY LOVE FROM THE STAR and nearly passed out along with the alien when I discovered he could not even touch his love interest without fainting and then flipped when he disappeared. Recently, I tried out UNCONTROLLABLY FOND and rooted all the way through for Kim Woo Bin's character only to discover, well, you know.

The other drama that just KILLS me is one I haven't seen mentioned here yet--Marriage Contract. Oh my gosh I cry. So much. Watching the relationship slowly unfold between Ji-hoon and little Eun-Sung is so sweet, and UEE does a great job of portraying grief at her diagnosis, along with a desire to live and just... everything.
It's the last few episodes of the drama that REALLY get me though. Watching Ji-hoon be SO considerate and all the little detail that went into him deciding how to take care of her, all the little things about how he reacted whenever something new happened to her as things progressed... I cried. So much. I rewatched it recently after finishing the Red Sleeve Cuff (I know, I'm so mean to myself)... oh baby. so many much tears.
PS I've totally agreed with a couple comments about the Red Sleeve Cuff... that drama though. It was gorgeous, and funny, and the court intrigue was actually interesting, and the HEROINE was just a character unto herself. Queen. I cried so much for that ending.

Marriage Contract was an emotion jerker. The very 1st scene that jerked me was when Uee's daughter was telling him to stay for a long time and not live her mom alone in this world like her father did live. 2nd scene was in ep 6 where she convinced his mom to fight and live because she is also fighting to live. Episodes 12 / 13 pleading scene where he was apologizing for God knows what. The moment he knew she was dealing with a Neuro issue. Marriage contract jerked emotions in me, so much it became a drama I easily go back to rewatch.

Yup. All of those lol. I also cry so much at the end when he's noticing her senses going on the fritz (the soup she can't taste, the fuzziness in her eyes, the tremors in her hands). I love the different ways he responds, from telling her to snap out of it to eating the food she made even though they were both so stressed, to just holding her... and the one that really gets me: following along with her motions as she loses her sight, installing handrails without even a single conversation between the two of them, and tapping her hands to let her know where he is... Oh my gosh. Just so good.

I can not even remeber who died.l think it was ML's brother but it was just when ML realised who was he and GOD i was crying for days and stopped watching and continued when i felt better.
And as for reply 1988 i was a university student and lived in dorms. The that *** ep 18 happened... I changed my profile picture on various apps to black and everyone thought someone important to me died.

The Light in Your Eyes.
I have only seen it once and that was enough. I remember distinctly bawling my eyes out in the last episode and feeling so deflated. I have MS and I am constantly thinking about the choices I have made in life. Did I make the right decision? Should I go back in time and change it. This show was hard for me, because you can't go back in time. You can relive it over and over again in your head, but you can't go back. Add that she was losing her memory and that was what set it off, because you know something is off, but you can't quite make it seem right, because you don't remember it.
I will never watch the show again. It was too much for me. My worst fear is losing my memories, because I want to remember the choices I made in the past and reflect on it.
