Premiere Watch: Ghost Doctor, Tracer

New year, new dramas! Our first drops of the year are about medical mysteries in the way of hero body swapping, and the wonderful world of tax investigations (and more mysteries) featuring none other than Im Shi-wan.

Ghost Doctor

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Medical, fantasy
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Dramaland sure loves its body swap hijinks, and since it’s been a hot minute since we had a drama along those lines, Ghost Doctor is next in line. Rain and Kim Bum are featured in what they’re calling a “body rental” scenario, and even though this one isn’t calling my name, I will readily admit the antics between them in the promos seem quite fun. Given they pour on the comedy and hijinks, I think this could be great. Rain does huffy and petty quite well (calling back to Full House days), and I’m hard-pressed not to enjoy a Kim Bum performance, so here’s hoping this rental goes well for all parties involved.

Tracer

Time slot: Friday & Saturday
Broadcaster: MBC
Genre: Drama, mystery
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Not gonna lie, finance-themed dramas can be a real snooze…. but lucky for Tracer, it has a great cast (Im Shi-wan, Go Ah-sung, and Sohn Hyun-joo) and the promise of satisfying take-downs. In the story’s premise, Im Shi-wan is not only gung-ho to bring financial crimes to light, but his competence and work ethic have an impact on the office of lazy paper-pushers that he joins. That in itself should be fun, because stories of people that grow in teamwork and competence (and badassery) are always enjoyable.

Neither of the premises interest me that much, but I really like the casts for both. I'll definitely give Ghost Doctor a try for Rain, Kim Bum and Uee and Tracer for Im Shi-wan and Go Ah-sung.

Anyone know where Tracer will be streaming? You'd think Kocowa, but zero results to search. Thanks. I don't get it, if it's MBC why it won't be on Kocowa...

I was wondering that too. It's not on Netflix or Iqiyi... Here it is Siwan leading me back to the dark side...

On TRACER’s MDL page there is a link to the streaming site ‘Wavve’ for viewing:

About Wavve, AsianWiki reports:

"Wavve" is an online streaming platform, that was first launched on September 18, 2019. The company was founded as a joint venture between SK Telecom and South Korea's three terrestrial broadcasters KBS, MBC, SBS.

Oh, I'm not adding another streaming service to the endless list I'm already paying for. So Dark side, here I go!

Wavve isn't available outside of Korea and doesn't provide subtitles anyway. If international fans want to watch the show legally and with subtitles, they'll have to hope it's picked up by an international streaming service. Perhaps Kocowa (which is essentially the American version of Wavve) will feature it.

I am keeping my fingers crossed. Sometimes these Kocowa dramas are ‘sprung’ at the last minute. Super annoying to have to sweat it out.

Availability angst. Kocowa is a joint venture of KBS, MBC, and SBS.
Viki has some kind of arrangement to carry some Kocowa dramas.

As of now tvN’s M/T drama GHOST DOCTOR is on Viki US’s “Coming Soon” list so episode one should be available on Monday.

As of now both MBC’s TRACER and SBS’s THROUGH THE DARKNESS are not on either Viki US or Kocowa’s “Coming Soon” list. I hope both of these dramas will soon be sprung and be available on a legal streaming site in the US.

In the meantime please put in a request to Viki here:

For a joint venture of KBS, MBC and SBS, Kocowa sure doesn't get many of their dramas anymore. It mostly has daily dramas and variety shows.

Viki has the license for Through the Darkness, but it must not be in the "Coming Soon" list yet.

Not a huge fan of medical kdramas (though I’ll partake every now and then), and Tracer doesn’t seem like something I’d watch immediately, but the cast is real good so I’ll at least check that one out. Been a hot minute since I’ve seen Go Ah-sung in something and she’s great (I really enjoyed Radiant Office). Hoping for success for both of the dramas to start the year off right!

Same here... these two dramas are not my cup of k-coffee, but the cast is! So, will definitely watch the 1st two episodes when available in the US.
