I choose On the Verge of Insanity because it had it all: Tight writing, no pacing issues, good acting and directing.

Every other drama I could nitpick in some area. Move to Heaven and D.P. were very strong, but I thought Lee Je-hoon's acting and storyline was the weakest part of Move to Heaven and it was like D.P. switched genres in the last two episodes, losing a lot of the realism as characters just walked away from car crashes and violent altercations.

Admittedly, I didn't watch a lot of the most critically acclaimed dramas of 2021 because they were heavy in traumatic feels and my real life already had enough of those, thank you very much. So, when I saw this question my first reaction answer was Vincenzo because it was a fun vigilante ride that understood you can't always redeem a vigilante just because he's charming and good looking, but you also don't need to kill him off. But you know what, I just finished Hello, Me! last week, and I think this one has my vote. Kudos to a drama that understood the real love story in this tale was FL's love for herself. And not only her, but everyone around her had a reckoning of their own with themselves and with their families, and it was just good. There were many points where the narrative could have easily slipped into the usual love triangle and/or corporate boringness tropefest, but it never let those shenanigans take over the main.

I started and wandered away from a lot of dramas in 2021, but I'm glad I turned back to Hello, Me!

A genre piece done to perfection was 'My Name'. An action revenge thriller that was all action, thrills and revenge. A 9 episode run meant we didn't get the usual K-drama mid-season filler. I ranked it 2 on my top three dramas of the year.

The dramas that I consider perfect purely for how they made me feel:

My Roomate is a Gumiho - Perfection; this drama took me to kdrama basics and reminded me of why I fell in love with them.
Run On - Perfection; This one warms my ❤ and how I wish to have a relationship like our OTP
Taxi Driver - Perfect; I have a crush on LJH and he did not disappoint.
Mr Queen - Nearly Perfect - I could do without the last 30 or so mins of the drama's ending, other than that, it has some of my best LOL moments.

Ahhhh!!! I forgot about My Roommate is a Gumihooo. I would've included it in my list just for that one conversation between our OTP in ep 4 (ig) where he quotes Love in the Times of Cholera. Sometimes you just want dramas to sweep you away and perfect book quotations placement do just that. That scene remains etched in my brain. Sigh. Now, I have to go over my favourite book passages again.

I am another one voting for ON THE VERGE OF INSANITY. It was so original, with so much subtle humour and the greatest douchebag of all times, played by Lee sang-Yeob. He deserved his award. There were other outstanding dramas, so the choice was not that easy, such as DP, Red Sleeve Cuff, Move to Heaven, Beyond Evil. I hope 2022 is going to be as good as 2021 in dramas.

Wow. "Best" is... best in what way?

Best in a serious way, like best kdrama equivalent of "literature", might be D.P. or Youth of May. I liked both of those a lot, but...

Best entertainment (for me) was Vincenzo, with Inspector Koo a very close 2nd and the early parts of Mr. Queen and Zombie Detective also in the mix. Your mileage may vary.

Best performance Shin Hye-sun in Mr. Queen. Lee Re in Hello Me! was too good not to mention.

Best money-maker was probably Squid Games (?)

2021 was really a year of dramas I didn’t finish watching so my options are limited here. Vincenzo didn’t grab me and I haven’t finished it despite a couple of attempts. Maybe it’s just that Song Joong ki doesn’t do it for me? He looks like a mouse.

Speaking of mice (look at my expert segue lol) - I’m going to give best drama to Mouse. It was long (20 episodes + 2 spin-off episodes) but well plotted and kept your attention. There were some ridiculous elements 😅 but it was dished up to you in a way that made it seem feasible; for the most part the acting was great. It’s not for everyone for sure, but I enjoyed it a lot.

Honourable mentions to Run On, which I loved, and Mad For Each Other which was so nearly completely awesome but for the weird all over the place-ness of the end.

The only drama I looked forward to with total joy was Dali and Gamjatang. The couple sizzled, the clothes were fantastic and the humor kept me laughing. My runners up are Run On and Vincenzo. Run On had a female second lead that rivaled Veronica Park (please send more drama land). Vincenzo was a morally corrupt fast paced adventure from beginning to end and cemented gold lighters as the new Subway.

I can’t name the best drama for me for last year tbh. It was a bleak year, and I don’t remember falling in love with any one of them. But these shows are among the faves.

- Sell Your Haunted House
- Nevillera
- Hospital Playlist 2

I didn’t like Run On at first. My panic mode sometimes kicked in when the ML was told to be “annoying” by the ones around him. I felt connected to him somehow. Anyway, the strange thing is that I felt like rewatching it so I started my rewatch yesterday. So far I’m enjoying it so much more than the first time watching. Yes! And you can even initiate a controversial issue so Beans will really be discussing with other Beans. You can select some good dramas and ask a question that generates discussion.

Spoiler alert:

For example, WHY DID DAE YEOB HAVE TO DIE in Bossam? Why a good character should be allowed to live in sageuks? What’s wrong with Dali that made it almost a perfect watch but not quite? Should dramas normalize overconsumption of alcohol? DB staff can provide what their thoughts on the subject/issue are and can ask Beans and others for more opinions.

I also think DB can ask some interesting questions such as what is the best drama for...”cheering you up”, “cursing your **** ex who left you for no reason”, “uplift your spirit”, “regain trust that true love exists”, “great laugh”, “beautiful wardrobe”, “mind game”, “satire”, etc. I think these topics can generate so many interesting ideas and will always be beneficial for when anyone is in the mood for one of them!

Also pretty easy to pivot from whatever issue/element of currently screening drama getting people commenting (on recaps/fan wall) to something more general that everyone else can join in on. E.g from why did [specific character] have to die? to, what death annoyed/devastated/delighted you the most in a kdrama? Is it more upsetting if a clearly signalled death doesn’t end up happening and you get a weird tacked on “but they didn’t die!” ending that ruins the whole point of the drama, or if an unsignalled death comes out of nowhere to claim your favourite character in a shocking but pointless twist?

Somehow I read your comment and thought of You Are My Spring. I wish the bad guy got punished much more for what he did. The best drama(s) of 2021 for me are - because in different genres:
- MR QUEEN, in the crazy fantasy sageuk genre
- RED SLEEVE CUFF - in the classical sageuk genre / and I normally hate those (too much boring politics) : I loved everything, the storyline, its pace, filming, editing, lights, OST, casting in it … I found the ending equally perfect yet heart-breaking : the fact that he enclosed his memories in a box in order to try & endure a life without her - his forever one and only - and reunited with her in dream on his death bed - asking her to please love him…
(some people here disliked the secret society part, but it has always existed … the ruler is not always the one we get t9 see but the ones pulling the strings from 5)3 shadows)
- RUN ON - cutest romance with great meaningful dialogs you almost never get in Dramas, and ISw ;)
- YUMI’s CELLS - true life romance with a very innovative way of showing our internal conflicts - and I thought I would dislike the cartoon inclusion when I lived it, not too long, really smart - I didn’t mind that they didn’t stay together in the end, it wasn’t too dramatic and I knew before watching that Yoo Bobby would be the next, and hey, who can resist LjY (curious as to which actor will be chosen to play her husband …)
- DALI and GAMJATANG - loved this romantic COMEDY - loved loved the male character, so candidly refreshing, not an ounce of bad in him, so uncomplicated, a pure heart like the one in When the Camellia blooms, played by Kim Ha-neul …, And loved the way he loved her, unconditional all-in, and loved loved Kim Min Jae in it ❤️
I enjoyed Move to heaven very much, but frustrated by the ending…too short format - as if they had cut the drama in half (as they did with love alarm)…
And quite a few others :)

The most annoying thing about the secret society was the secret meeting place and prison. How am I to believe that it can exist without being found by the palace guards, hunting parties, people just out for a walk, someone in a lookout tower...? It goes hand in hand with the kite that was seen so clearly from so far away (I'm going with an optical illusion due to moisture in the air on this one).

About KITES in The RES SLEEVE CUFF:
, if you want to debate their validity in military usage history for 2000 years, a very interesting fact it may be a bit complicated 😉
I quote from below sources :
“ By AD 549 paper kites were certainly being flown, as it was recorded that in that year a paper kite was used as a MESSAGE for a RESCUE mission. ”
“ Historical data accounts for the use of kites by Chinese Emperors to signal troops from far away. Such use of kites for military purposes has been a constant record in Chinese historical data.“
It is only a matter of directing but certainly not of the underlying validity of kites used in Military for signaling purposes and many other…

About SECRET SOCIETIES :
In the RSC , we were told there were many palace insiders who pledged allegiance to the Society starting with one of the Kings Ministers…it makes quite a lot of palace people and guards as accomplices for one…and why so many were killed as we’re told but not shown…
(In France history says that the most dangerous place was Versailles palace itself and there were smaller surrounding small buildings that were used for lots of dark purposes…(I am French ;)

The reason for the secret society itself is made very clear and makes perfect sense: they don’t want any of the current king lineage at the top …

- then, it is made clear that one goes to the secret place from the main palace without having to visibly exiting the palace thx to a tunnel…whose length is not told … ;)
And the place has nothing special on the surface beside being a meeting point, so what is the risk? It could be abandonnés etc. Not that is actually matters ;). it is only a problem of directing/ decor choice because on principle there is nothing wrong / stupid with the above premise …
- and it is not so much the building that is secret but the meetings that take place there … and the underground jail… it could perfectly well either have been an abandoned building outside the palace walls or a building officially existing for another purpose. The look of the building itself again may be wrong ? ( based on what) but it doesn’t affect the secret society premises that makes perfect sense… just a matter of directing and decor choice maybe.

But denying the mere existence of secret societies in the past - whatever the country - is rather daring 😉

(link to source below but internet abounds )… and so on…

ALL IN ALL, TRSC was an epic drama, full of very interesting facts, however adapted for this story maybe,… / beside the main storyline …
(re kite used to convey message, if the king was warned by her, it makes more sense that it was thanks to a kite rather than a messenger bird she would have been carrying around 😉)

also the fact that the person in charge of more than 500 maids , and who bedded the former king, thought that they were more than key in the place - which is true be it for utility or danger prevention, or access to confidential information as no...

About KITES in the RES SLEEVE CUFF
If you’re going to question their official usage in military for over 2000 years …

Quote from below source :

“Historical data accounts for the use of kites by Chinese Emperors to signal troops from far away. Such use of kites for military purposes has been a constant record in Chinese historical data.

Emperor Wudi of the Liang Dynasty was surrounded by Hou Jing rebels at Taicheng Nanjing, the Emperor ordered a kite to be used and served as an SOS signal to get help”
Also: “ By AD 549 paper kites were certainly being flown, as it was recorded that in that year a paper kite was used as a message for a rescue mission.”

So in the RSC, it is only a matter of directing :)
Note that there are 10s of references on the matter on internet and history books 😉

Sorry if my reply may sound a bit ironical, but i can't help it, because I appreciate fairness in all things, and as much as you can appreciate or not a drama for all sorts of reasons, it is not fair to criticize something (kite, secret societies...) you apparently have no knowledge about, yet did not investigate:
....so Why not accept historical facts ? as I quoted above ... ;)
https://www.chinatravel.com/culture/chinese-kite

In the RED SLEEVE CUFF, it is only a matter of directing re- size, height and distance
(did you compute a math formula to deduce the necessary size and height of a kite for it to be visible from distance x ? - or to make it easier to understand, do you have any idea of how a lighthouse is working, re- distance from which it can be seen... ;) ,
SO it is certainly not a matter of accuracy/possibility of using kites for military signalling, which is a fact...
(or do you wish to rewrite history based on your dislike of that part of the drama.... :)

For me, the Red Sleeve Cuff was extremely enlightening in that regard,
because after watching this, which I was not aware of that past usage of kites ... so I SEARCHED instead of considering that it was not plausible ... :)
http://www.edubilla.com/invention/kite/

0

Sorry if my reply may be a bit ironical, but it seems you wish to rewrite History to suit your dislike of that part of the drama.

Why instead of criticizing something you don't understand/ have no knowledge about, like Military usage of Kites in History, why aren't you curious and investigate?
I can't post the internet links but if you copy-paste the quotes from my above response, you will see websites explaning the usage of kites in military signalling, when too far to use sound... ;)

if you don't like the directing of the RED SLEEVE CUFF, that's something else, because they did not preoccupy themselves with showing the proper size and height of the kite compared to the distance needed... but hey, did you compute the formula to determine the correct data based on a distance we were not provided with? or do you have any understanding as to how far an average lighthouse can be observed in daylight (that is without being lit) by a boat ...
I like fairness in all things,
one can appreciate or not something,
but the least one can do when critisizing is investigate the plausiblity and facts beforehand... my humble opinion...

And I loved that I learned something new thanks to The Red Sleeve Cuff ;)

Seriously... what was not believable?.... please, rhetorical question ;)
they used the Kite exactly as it is said on official websites regarding military usage and official History of paper kites .... Even faced with indisputable historical facts, if you don't understand the perfectly rational INTEND of the drama, and prefer to focus on whatever directing issue that you mistake for a logical/believable issue, I can't reason with you I'm afraid ... i quit :)
if I may: a relevant saying could be "Never mistake the finger for the moon"... ;)

About the SECRET SOCIETY in the RED SLEEVE CUFF…
I found it so interesting that they explained that there were above 500 maids to run the palace, a network of actual immense power as they could know just about everything, and had literally the lives of people in their cooking hands and more 😉
That the person in charge of them and who bedded the King thrived for more, and wanted to decide of who was best suited for the Kings position, thought she was legitimate in deciding, with the help of Ministers (and their people 😉) sharing the same interest, is far from far-fetched and brings a very interesting light on all these people you don’t pay attention to - but who are key as a whole to the running of an organisation…

RED SLEEVE CUFF
Questioning the existence of secret societies throughout history is very daring… 😉 and I don’t think that they put signs on the premises/building they used for they secret meetings.
In the RSC, it is a mere matter of directing, budget and artistic means..
It is explained that in order not to draw attention, they would go there by a secret tunnel.
They were ministers and their people and guards involved.
From above, the place had nothing special to it, only a secret access would lead to underground jails, nothing wrong with that.
We are not explained how far from the palace walls it is, but definitely not close.
Just saying 😉

1

reply

Required fields are marked *

It would be more believable if it had been a long walk from the palace, but that's not how it was portrayed.

1

mmmh... sorry but I have to disagree...
quite on the contrary, the maids had to use a tunnel in order for their movements leaving the palace, which was forbidden except when officially permitted, not to be noticed...
but we just have no idea of its length - and dont tell me that in the 18th century, they didn't know how to build those, we have known how to do it for millenium:
https://www.britannica.com/technology/tunnel
and don't tell me they didn't have the means to do it, since there were hundreds of high ranking male officials and all their personnel around them, ...
Now, if the directing simplified it so as not to spend 10s of mn showing people walking, or signs to clearly indicate to the viewer the distance... ;)
Do you really think that is the important part? or don't you rather think it is the meaning that matters?

This Secret Society context and plot is SO extremely SMART...it just makes perfect sense throughout, and it was explained to us extremely clearly as well. Brilliant screenplay in that regard... Now, that they did not explain what was the official purpose of the building they used for their secret meetings, or how far it was, can be a problem is beyond my understanding... really? why care about that? You were just shown the smartest political plot you can find in a Sageuk ... it was Brilliant :)

0

PS. also, when YS came to the rescue of DK, it was clearly shown that it was not "instant"... but took quite some time to reach the place, without using the tunnel... just saying ;)

BEYOND EVIL - reminds me a lot of "Memories of Murder." I still prefer MoM to PARASITE.
VINCENZO - fun watch.
LOST- Jeon Do-Yeon sells it every time.

Memories of murder sounds intriguing! Is it a good watch?

It's one of Bong's critically acclaimed movies. It's based on the Hwaseong serial murders. The killer was identified 30 years later in 2019.

I hear you :).
I haven't finished it yet, but Yuri made it memorable. I did not expect her to be this good.

It's more mellow watch than Red Sleeve.

Despite a disappointing ending, hands down Mr. Queen was my favorite. I loved the pace, the music, the witty lines. Shin Hye Sun is on her own level as an actress. Kim Jung Hyun conveys so much emotion with his eyes, but he is at his best when he acts befuddled. Because I cannot find anything of interest that is currently airing, I’m rewatching episodes of Mr. Queen and it still cracks me up.

First half - Beyond Evil (57th Baeksang Best drama winner)

Second half - The Red Sleeve (so far the top contender, let’s see new offerings in 2022)

Honorable mentions -
- Hospital Playlist 2 (HP1 is better however since HP1 lost the Baeksang nomination on a “timing” technicality, it might just snag a nomination)
- Squid Game - Daesang candidate in the upcoming Baeksang. A combination of its own merit and what it did for South Korea
- Mine - instead of tropey trophy wives pulling each other down, we saw strong female solidarity.
- Youth of May - I didn’t love this the way people did. I thought the uprising was too simplistic. However given the disastrous Snowdrop, it might just get something - as a lesson of how to have pro-democracy student uprising as a time period without pissing off South Koreans

I also enjoyed Movie to Heaven, On the Verge of Insanity, Dalri & Cocky Prince. I’m sure the fantastic Nam Goong Min will get something even if The Veil is a disappointment.

I always thought of writing about my favourite dramas in the year end feature on the beanie wall but I somehow missed it. So thanks dbstaff for doing this.
My favourite trio for 2021 are :RUN ON, VINCENZO amd YUMI'S CELLS. These were the dramas which I eagerly waited for watching, missed them when the shows ended, was constantly listening to the sound tracks and are always at the back of my mind. Honorable mentions to HUMAN DISQUALIFICATION and YOUTH OF MAY.

That kind of questions make me think of all my favorite dramas of the year, so my brain starts screaming "You Are My Spring! no Mr Queen, no, no Happiness... but Mad For Each Other... Run On!" but You Are My Spring had that weird psycho killer subplot, Mad had a really messy ending, and no one cared about the politics in Mr Queen. So I'll pick Yu Mi's Cells.

Yu Mi's Cells was a real and sincere drama. I don't think any mistake a character made or any decision that I didn't like was bad writting, all of those things felt right, they felt natural.

Every little thing that happend in the show made sense acording with the story and the characters. For me it was more like watching a documentary about this girl called Yu Mi and not some slice of life/romcom that's just supposed to entertain or heal me. For once I didn't make the show about me and I stopped judging the characters (except for the SFL of course), I just wanted them to be happy. I don't know, I just think everything about this show felt right.

But I also would like to give credit to Be My Dream Family. I think it could've been the best drama of the year if it wasn't for a few things. This show had a deep (and realistic) view in family dynamics. The characters/relationships had a really nice development also.
This drama was so healing and sweet, I just loved it with all my heart even if it wasn't the best.

Mr Queen, Bossam, Our Beloved Summer and Dali and Gamjatang for me. If I were to rank them, Our Beloved Summer will be first (right now) then Dali and Gamjatang, Bossam and Mr Queen on my overall satisfaction with the drama.
