Drama viewership ratings for the week of Oct. 18-24, 2021

We welcomed one new show this week, and boy, did it make a splash. Thriller-action drama Jirisan premiered to a super impressive 9.1 percent. And this made the drama the second-highest rated premiere in tvN history, just behind Hospital Playlist 2. I guess this doesn’t really come as a surprise, considering it comes from Kingdom writer Kim Eun-hee and stars Jeon Ji-hyun and Joo Ji-hoon. Still, what a way to start!

We have a lot more dramas awaiting us in November, but for now, the last of the early fall shows are wrapping up. The Veil came to a decent end at 8.8 percent, while Human Disqualification came to a quiet end, maintaining a consistent 1-2 percent rating throughout its run. Lovers of the Red Sky, Hometown, and Yumi’s Cells will be ending next week. With that, I’m ready for some new (hopefully fun) content!

Huh, such good ratings for One the Woman and Beanies aren’t even talking about it? I will give it a shot.

I find it like a summer beach novel or a series from Ryan Murphy: each episode has multiple moments where I roll my eyes or blurt out "c'mon, really?" but there is enough to enjoy to justify sticking with it. I have always liked Lee Sang-yoon but Honey Lee is perfectly consistent with the overall quality of the show -- sometimes it's perfectly riotous and others, the joke or shtick is too much.

About halfway through 1 and it’s feeling very soapy 🛁. Jeez, that chaebol family is horrendous.

try! try! try! been sad that no one's talking about this drama, but one the woman is a surprise. ep 1 was a bit slow for me but its very fast paced from ep 2 to 11. 12 tried to inject emotions and gravity to this comedy so nothing moved too much as well, but it seems things will pick up by 13 again.

I'll be watching it too. I do like Honey Lee no matter how OTT she is.

I can't say I liked the first episode of Jirisan but the hype paid off in ratings.

Poor MBC. I'd venture to guess they were really really hoping for double digits.

MBC even created a new time slot (Fri-Sat) for The Veil.
It should have stayed on the original mid week slot probably.
I feel sorry for Namgoong Min, because he gave it his all...

I wonder how long his appetite for d-a-r-k will last. I've watched Chief Kim 4 times in the past 4 years. Of his other dramas I've only finished one, Stove League.

Doctor Prisoner was great though.
It was really fun to watch the main characters trying to outsmart each other every 15 minutes.
He was the main lead of course but supporting actors (villains or semi-villains) did a fantastic job also.

But yes, I hope he won't play a dark character in his next project...

Still the best ratings MBC have had for ages so they must be pretty happy though obviously they would've hoped for more.

Like @missh said, I can't say I liked the first episode of Jirisan either.
CGI looked so fake... (I'm not a CGI drama girl in general)
I'll keep watching anyway.

I watched One the Woman until Ep. 8? Maybe 9, I don't know.
It's totally a drama of Honey Lee, by Honey Lee, for Honey Lee...
I like her a lot but it's a little too much for me.

More new weekend dramas are coming up this week and next week.
Lee Young-Ae's Inspector Koo, Park Hae-Soo's Chimera, Junho's Red Sleeve, and Han Hyo-Joo's Happines...
I'm not sure how Junho's sageuk (MBC) will play out among them..

RED SLEEVE will do well in part because it is based upon a classic story.

Saguek and makjang usually do better in general(It seems like Korean loves both a lot), so it should do well.
but Jirisan already broke into the double digits (10.7%) at Ep.2...

Same thoughts on Jirisan. Beautiful scenery ruined by CGI. Their rescue missions while gripping seemed overly dramatic when put into context-- they were risking their lives climbing atop searching for a boy who had no such gear to reach those places. Seemed pretty funny in retrospect. The pacing seems a bit off too and writing tend to be overly mysterious but not engaging enough for me. I'm curious about what happened though so guess I'll keep watching for now.

I know!
It was way too dramatic...
I was like, hmmm if this boy can get there easily (yeah he was in his school uniform), then it can't be so deep in the mountain...
But I like the writer so I will watch at least two more episodes.

I hope it does well, but this is MBC we are talking about. Koreans like sageuks but the competition might be tough with Now We are Breaking Up.

Is Happiness taking over Yumi's timeslot?

Yes it it.
Holy cow, this Sat is the toughest time slot EVER.
Red Sleeves 10:00pm
Happiness 10:40
Jirisan 9:00 (to 10:30, I guess?)
Inspector Koo 10:30
Now, We Are Breaking Up 10:00-11:10
Chimera 10:30

Me too. I definitely have a beauty bias, but I'm prepared for the mystery too, and I'm in love with the mountain in all it's wildness. I don't want to hear about cgi.

YOUNG LADY AND GENTLEMAN has become much more fun and the ratings are showing that.

i'm kinda watching YOUNG LADY too, and it's a fitting show for my weekend. i'm watching it through cable so i'll be a week behind than the Korea's schedule, I'm up to ep 8 now. What I can say is that up to ep 8 this show and the predecessor (the 3 sisters) felt different than the usual weekender, at least the weekenders I've watched before.
These 2 shows felt 'raw', and 'real', that sometimes I felt that they become more into slice of life, if we disregard the OTT moments which is still quite apparent in the 2 shows. and 'a more transparent real world' in a weekender would make me watch it because they still balance it with some comedy (and some good-for-laugh OTT).

Happy for Jirisan's rating.
before its premier week, I avoided any long description about the plot, other than it will be about park rangers. the biggest draw for me is the writer, who wrote my favourite mystery Sign (SBS, 2011), but like a veteran beanie/kdrama viewer, I've put my expectation much lower than i'd like to, which means i come to the first ep almost blindly. and I like ep 1! especially the twist in the last 10mnt of ep 1, which gives me the dun dun dun effect and made me excited to watch the 2nd ep. it's getting a darker plot, so I didn't watch ep 2 on sunday night, and just managed to watch half of 2nd ep before I went to office this morning,
i would just say the mystery thickened, and couldn't wait to watch the rest tonight (maybe with one eye closed).

side note: I would wish that jeon ji hyun's character been 'polished' to not be looking so polished heee,,her teeth are so white that sometimes it distracted me from the scenes. hehe..

I'm so sad to have to let Human Disqualification go.

I'm going to miss the quiet tension, the suspension of time in those stares, the longing and the reaching.

If I could recreate the experience of having watched this for the first time tomorrow, I would 100% binge those 16 hours again and again.

There's so much hype around Jirisan and the ratings are great but personally I found it really underwhelming in basically all aspects. Perhaps my expectations were too high. I'm really curious to see if it manages to retain and build on its viewership in the coming weeks.

I just finished the 1st ep of Jirisan. I agree that the cg parts or off putting but the rest of the drama make up for it. The premise looks intriguing enough so I'm will to forgive those horrible CG effects in favor of watching the leads and to see how the plot will unfold. Also, people need to chill. I already lowered my expectations, editing-wise, after knowing this is helmed the Mr. Sunshine PD. 🤚
