Nevertheless: Episode 7 Open Thread

Our heroine might have enjoyed her change of scenery, but when she’s faced with two suitors, her head and her heart seem to always be at odds. Which one should she trust? Head, heart, potato, butterfly. She tries to make the right decisions, but in the end, we’re left questioning the strength of her resolve.

EPISODE 7 WEECAP

If ever there was a frustrating episode it is this one — when we pick up with the stare-down we left off with last week, the staring doesn’t really stop from that point on. In fact, each scene seems to exist only to put the characters in our love triangle at opposing points, and then have them stare each other down.

What kind of stares you ask? Well, it depends on the character, and who they are staring at. For Jae-un, it’s stares of jealousy when she’s with Do-hyuk, and stares of desire when he gets her alone. Do-hyuk’s stares are more of an inquiry: who is this Jae-un and what is between him and Na-bi? He senses something, and stares them down to try to figure it out.

Na-bi, though, seems to be staring only in one direction: Jae-un’s. And it doesn’t even look voluntary. There’s nothing she mistrusts when she’s with Do-hyuk, so her stares are always outwards. You can almost hear her thoughts: Is he looking at me? *she looks over at him* Is he watching me? *she looks at him to find out* Why is he talking to that other girl? *she stares at him to convince herself he’s not into her* And so on.

Some viewers might find this episode of jealousy and desire to be an enjoyable one, with every situation catering to the sexual tension between Na-bi and Jae-un. They find themselves in the car with Do-hyuk. They find themselves alone on the ferris wheel. They play another one of Bit-na’s drinking games and Jae-un is pretty unmasked in his desire for her. Is anyone out there enjoying this?

Being on Team Potato is rough, not because I’m not used to SLS, but because it makes no sense in this story. Na-bi and Jae-un don’t really have a relationship beyond sex — and that very lack of emotional intimacy is what caused Na-bi to pull away from him in the first place. Does she think that will change so easily?

In contrast, she has a much more grounded and full relationship with Do-hyuk. They not only have a common past, but he knows her as a person, understands her, likes who she is, and values her. So it might be a no-brainer to me, but in the world of Nevertheless, there seems to be nothing more powerful than pheromones. And Na-bi can’t deny herself.

At the end of the episode, after endless gazing and pining and fighting with their eyes, Jae-un stays behind with Na-bi and does his usual routine. He corners her, kisses her, and says if she accepts his kisses he’s not going to be able to stop. Do-hyuk calls just then, as if we didn’t already know that Na-bi needed a (literal) wake-up call. Will it work?

The episode is pretty low on plot, but we do see more of the adorable sunbae couple who are now cohabitating, and clearly enjoying every minute of it. These two are the cutest. Can we get more of this non-toxic relationship, please?

Similarly, we’ve been all but guaranteed Sol knows all too well what her feelings for Ji-wan are. As much as I want to like Ji-wan here, the more I see of her, the more her cutesy ditzy ways irk me. (If they could dial her acting back to maybe 85% instead of 100%, it might be a little more endearing. As such, I think she’s just meant to contrast the absolute non-bubbly and non-silly personality of Sol.)

While we’re on the topic, Bit-na also irks me. I understand why we need her as a character, and her position of always instigating moments and lighting fires, but I’m losing patience for her, particularly with the way she’s treated Kyu-hyun. Their argument/silent treatment continues through the episode until they finally have conversation on the beach. It’s like Kyu-hyun said everything I wanted to: “Is it fun to tease people and make them uncomfortable? You gossip about others just for your enjoyment.” He breaks up with her and walks off.

This couple is important to the story, I think, because they provide the inversion of Na-bi and Jae-un’s story. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see how they’re different, though. Kyu-hyun knows when he’s getting played, when the person he has feelings for doesn’t match his sincerity, and doesn’t want what he wants. He has the inner strength to walk away, which leaves us to guess whether Na-bi can do the same.

Unfortunately, Kim Min-gwi has a real-life scandal going on, and his onscreen time will be reduced during the remaining episodes. This sucks in many ways, but in terms of the story, I’m sorry we won’t get to see more of the one character who is sensible and able to think objectively. I also liked the friendship we were seeing grow between him and Jae-un — that seemed beneficial for Jae-un’s growth — so I’ll be sorry to see that angle dropped (and will be hoping it’s not).

With only three episodes left to go, I’m honestly not sure where we are going to land. As Na-bi continues to lean towards Jae-un, and Jae-un leans towards Na-bi, I’m wondering if we just might get a “happy ending” for them after all? This is the one case where I might be disappointed with that. Because after episodes of red flags, foreshadowing, and Na-bi claiming to have opened the gates of hell, where is the promised pandemonium?

imo it's not really a decision between who is a "safer" bet for nabi. it's in the connection she has with the other person. and that man just happens to be jaeon. and yeah, their relationship started on sexual terms, but you also can't ignore the moments they connected through non-sexual activities (even if it were just at night and not publicly). regardless of whether they wanted to do it in secret or not, i think the intimacy of those moments just became stronger because of the privacy they had in one another. the emotional connection the two have are beyond the first-love history she has with dohyeok. as much as they both don't want to admit it, they understand one another. the only sucky thing about it is their communication—they keep on hesitating to speak their thoughts which make them have those misunderstandings. nabi ignoring dohyeok's call, pretty much tells who her heart really belongs to. and in the preview, i'm guessing the only reason she doesn't want to hurt dohyeok's feelings is because she still wants to be his friend. it still seems like nabi and jaeon are endgame which i'm all in for. i just kind of hope they clear the air with all the miscommunications they've had this far. the only reason it's been to toxic for them is because they can't seem to say what their hearts are screaming LOL

kinda sad that gyu hyun is getting cut because he was really deep in the storyline. i just hope the scenes they cut aren't crucial to the main leads. oh wells 🤷🏻‍♀️

I love all the angst of this episode! Just loving all the subversion of our expectations. Thinking about it, it doesn't hit any of your typical notes of a drama.

Na-bi and Jae-eon clearly want to be together. Is it "good" for them? I don't know. Maybe they will learn something and they will learn some lessons the hard way. In the preview, it seems like we might have Na-bi with Do-hyuk. He cares about her and she is probably going to date him because he seems like the right choice but not the one she really wants. If that's the case, I think she's just going to break his heart. Sometimes the heart wants what it wants...

The friend group! Oh my god! As I was watching this, I just kept thinking of all of the annoying "cool" people I knew in college who would engage in EXACTLY this kind of awful behavior. Get intoxicated, try to make everyone tell the "truth," and leave everyone feel awkward and some people feeling very vulnerable. They are all playing some really messed up games with each other. The scriptwriters are too accurate!

It makes sense to me. Na-bi is drawn to Jae-un in a magnetic, chemical way that she can’t (or doesn’t want to) control because it feels good for a while. But, she understands that she’s miserable with the situation overall, and so, seeks out Do-hyuk because he’s the rational choice. Like missvictrix said at the beginning, it’s a choice between head and heart (or, between sex and a real relationship). Na-bi doesn’t think Jae-un will change (which is why she’s spending time with Do-hyuk), she just wishes (irrationally) that he will.

Someone in last week’s thread talked about Na-bi’s need for control, and to get Jae-un to like her (to be the one he chooses above others), to feed her ego. I think this is correct. She’s insecure and doesn’t realize she has power in this situation. I will be disappointed if these two end up together. I think the best thing for Na-bi is to get hurt again and then spend some time on her own, building herself up, so that she will want to go with rational choice relationship in the future.

I'm not sure NaBi wants 'control' so much as she wants to avoid being like her mother, passionately falling for one guy after another only to be hurt / dumped continually. NaBi's aunt is correct in that there is no reward without risk, and love / intimate, emotional relationships take courage. Finally, not all the consequences of those relationships are 'bad', e.g., you grow / learn something about yourself with each one, or in the extreme you could be gifted with a beautiful family / beautiful children.

This is one of those dramas I’d prefer to start from the tenth episode to avoid unnecessary headache. Three more weeks to go to start watching!

Three episodes is more than enough to say whatever there is to say about these two. They could easily just keep playing this mind game for a really long time, she teased us with chaos and offers only people lying to themselves and playing with others.

Really loving this drama the more episodes we get. The college setting and everyone's individual story lines has caught my attention. I honestly didn't think I'd get this invested, can't wait for next weeks episode. Check out my thoughts on ep3&4: https://bit.ly/3rT5M92

So the knives are out for yet another attractive and talented actor who will lose this part, and probably his livelihood because of ............SCANDAL!!!! Has anyone noticed that the person who was responsible for all the disgusting stories about Ji Soo has now admitted that they were all made up, and in fact he/she had never met him?? Too late, too late - his professional life is done for. And that brilliant girl who was the FL in Its OK to not be OK .......... the extremely private texts between her and an ex boyfriend, which could have been read in a number of ways, were interpreted as disadvantageously to her as possible. And a number of people who have worked with her say all the stories about her being a diva and unpleasant to everyone are a load of rubbish! Too late, too late, she's lost a lot of sponsorships and probably a lot of parts in dramas.

I shudder to think what this poor man has done! I just hope he isn't driven to suicide, which seems to happen quite often amongst Korean Glitterati.
