Ji Chang-wook up for a new medical drama

A new drama is in the works called If You Tell Me Your Wish and actor Ji Chang-wook (Lovestruck in the City) is being courted for the lead role.

The story takes place in a palliative care unit, and explores the idea of dying well and how “saving” someone can take different forms. There’s a special case patient in the ward, however, and the characters rally together to provide support and try to save him from the (figurative) quicksand that he’s trapped in.

The part that has been offered to Ji Chang-wook is the special case patient, Yoon Kyeo-re. Although he is a man who has thus far escaped death, it is only thanks to medical treatments as he has ultimately lost his will to live. Even when he has flickers of motivation or hope, it often triggers his destructive habit of self-harm which deters his progress again.

It sounds like a very interesting but challenging role, and I’m curious what direction the story will take. If done well, this could be a really thought-provoking piece and I hope they handle the subject matter with care and respect.

Written by Jo Ryung-soo and directed by Kim Yong-wan (The Cursed: Dead Man’s Prey, Love Cell), If You Tell Me Your Wish is still in the planning stages and the broadcasting network has not yet been announced. Filming is set to begin towards the end of the year.

At the moment, Ji Chang-wook has not confirmed if he will be accepting the offer. But he is busy filming for his upcoming Netflix drama The Sound of Magic.

Girl...chill, it is not that serious. The thread is not even dedicated to fangirling over JCW. It is dedicated to the latest casting news.

Also, whether you like it or not, people are allowed to express their opinion.

It’s obvious you’re a hater. Why bother reading and commenting at all, just to vent your hatred?
This thread is about JCW , either you’re blind or being ridiculous. Sure you are allowed to express your hate, and let everyone knows that you’re just being spiteful. No one is stopping you from being hateful, as we ( fans of JCW) have passed beyond all hope for the likes of you. 🙄

@abz008, I see you are upset, but you are being rude. We are allowed to point out that in our opinions(without having to expressly say in our opinion) that JCW's last dramas haven't been the best. At most they have been solid. @nerdy I'd speaking for those us who have that opinion. If you feel we are wrong, write on your own post how much you have loved JCW's last dramas and ignore the rest of us. The tone of your comments are really unnecessarily vitriolic. If I don't like a post, I ignore it and post what I want. I recommend you do the same so as not to come off as so angry. Thank you.

The premise sounds interesting enough for me and I haven't watched anything of Wookie since "Suspicious Partner", so maybe I'll give it a try!
And in another news, Jang Dong Yoon is probably going to make a return to drama land as a cupid so that's exciting!! 😁

I will definitely can an eye on this project. On the plus side Ji Chang-wook, as part of a strong ensemble cast (think PRISON PLAYBOOK) of established character actors, could be terrific. He would not have to carry the whole load. One the minus side I can’t find out anything about Writer Jo Ryun-soo. The only thing I have seen of Director Kim Yong-wan is the film CHAMPION (2018) (Viki US) with Ma Dong-seok and Kwon Yul. You know what you are getting with MDS but I was totally unprepared for a comic Kwon Yul in CHAMPION. Before this film I had only seen KY in two dramas: WHISPER (2017) and VOICE 2 (2018) where he was anything but comedic. Subsequently in HAECHI I was not surprised at KY’s comedic acting. Sorry for the diversion.

JCW is part of the cast of the film HARD HIT/RESTRICTED CALL which was released on June 23, 2021 and has done very well in the box office.
Lee Jae-in who plays Se-Yoon in RACKET BOYS is also part of the cast of RESTRICTED CALL.

I am looking forward to JCW’s upcoming drama on Netflix THE SOUND OF MAGIC which is being directed by the director of ITAEWON CLASS Kim Sung-yoon.

Wow, he will have the role of a patient and not a doctor? That's a big surprise for me, but I could be interesting.
He could challenge himself with playing a normal person (typically with trauma,, yes, I know), and not a know-it-all... 🙄
Nevertheless, he doesn't know how to pick a good drama.
On the other hand, I think I understood this is the writer of prison playbook?
In which case, possibly the drama will be good no matter what....

I will also wait for the reviews first.... 🤓

@javinne, I could not find out anything about writer Jo Ryung-soo. The writer for PP was Jung Bo-hoon who is the writer of RACKET BOYS.
Now if writer-nim Jung was connected to WISH (my abbreviation already lol) I would feel a lot more comfortable about it.

Excpet Melting Softly, that was badly written and I couldn't finish, I really liked him in his last roles. In Backstreet Rookie, he really acted the most ordinary guy but he made him shine and I liked his character in Lovestruck City, the beginning wasn't top, but the second part was pretty good. It's funny because usually I like the part when the couple is happy and doesn't like when they have broken up. But for this drama, it was the opposite.

Backstreet Rookie was so unlucky with its airing schedule, with it being released during the heights of racial tensions and BLM movements gaining momentum.

I am too, personally, don’t consider BR to be a flop. The show had hearts, explored familial relationships so well and JCW performed good there even when their characters was, as you say, so ordinary.

I dare say it was a great, solid drama if only people could look beyond and ignore the supposedly racist parts.

I’m definitely NOT saying anything like “if BLM and racial tension was not at the height, it would be acceptable”. I can understand that it will never be for many people.

I’m just saying that the circumstances in which the show being released surely contributed to the barrage of negative reviews, with more people being even more vocal to bash the show because one part of it was considered racist.

Don’t make your own assumptions on people that you never know, please.

Way to tell on yourself.

Did you not read what you wrote. You are anti Black and think that BLM is a joke.

Let me guess, you believe in the nonsense that is 'reverse racism', right?

4

Did you not read what I wrote then?

I’ve explained my point
Read before you speak please

But then honestly I’m also curious of how your logic works to be able to come to that astounding conclusion.

3

@larelle79 Could you delete your last comment, please. You can thing everything you want about a drama but you shouldn't attack someone here. It's not the plaform for it.

5

@kurama

I don't see the same for who I was talking to. Make sure you are equal in your selection.

3

Racism isn’t something to “look beyond and ignore”. It is unacceptable at all times and should be called out regardless of timing and circumstances. Backstreet Rookie wasn’t “unlucky” with its schedule, it was unlucky because its content was horrifically racist and had no place in any modern media.

It is amazing how people seriously don't want to talk about Korea's anti Blackness and complete and total cultural appropriation.

3
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

It’s because most people don’t care about anti-Blackness. It’s a global issue and not one people pay attention to unless it’s “trendy” to do so. Just look at Penthouse and their racist nonsense, even after several cast members participated in an anti-racism campaign. It’s all just performative pr and it’s appalling.

3

I’m not asking anyone to ignore racism out of their life.

I’m just encouraging people, in the context of entertainment media, to judge a show objectively as a whole, instead of effectively dismissing a show in its entirety just because they found issues with a part of it.

I agree some parts of BR could raise issues, but there’s also many fun and good values to be found there.

2
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

The show had no good values. Period.

It was racist and deserved to bomb.

You are looking for excuses to justify racism.

I stand by what I said, you telling on yourself.

3

I AM judging Backstreet Rookie objectively. And objectively, the show was a racist, anti-Black mess that had no business being aired in 2020 (or any other time). Some issues can be brushed aside and dismissed in order to look for positives, but racism is absolutely NOT one of them. An issue as serious as this will taint the entire drama as a whole. Besides that, there is also the sexism and inappropriate age-gap/power dynamic thing that I won’t get into.

All in all, Backstreet Rookie should not be your hill to die on. There are many other dramas that are fun and have genuinely good values without the awful racism and misogyny.

2

“The show had no good values. Period.”

You turned out to be a perfect candidate to demonstrate my point there, thank you @larelle79
And thank you too to mention the term ‘reverse racism’, I just googled about it. English isn’t my first language you see, so it’s another new term for my vocabulary.
But if you would allow me to give a piece of advice, sir/madam, try not to be so judging to the next people you meet, god bless them. We only exchanged a few sentences and you already called me an anti-black-racist just because I like a show that you don’t like. Wow certainly I didn’t expect to be called like that in a website about kdramas.

But, fair points for @ladynightshade, at least this is the type of explanation that I would like to see and not just some aggressive scribbles like other’s replies.

If an issue in a drama is too much for you, explain your cause, show your logical thinking, and be done with it then and there. Just please do not continuously berate it and spread hatred towards it in all your channel like many people out there.

That’s it for me. I’ve explained my points. So, ciao 👋

BR wasn't a flop, the average ratings were around 8% in Korea, it wasn't bad. It was in the top of the dramas on iqiyi for a long time.

On dramabeans, some people didn't like it, but the ones who watched were pretty happy at the end.

2

I don't think Dramabeans is the platform to talk about racism in general because people can't stop themselves to attack personally the others. It doesn't mean that the subject of racism doesn't touch me.

In the case of BR, people could express themselves about the drama, nobody never stopped them.

Not a fan of the premise, but I have much respect for the writer of Prison Playbook (if this is indeed written by the same writer) so hopefully this breaks the chain of the bad dramas JCW has been choosing. I just want to be captivated by him again. Ive fallen out of love..... woo me back, JCW!

If only you could read yourself and see in the deep hate in you, you would know the real problem is you, and not JCW. JCW is just an actor and he is paid to act what is required of him by his director and the script writers. Picking on him with such venomous bitterness while hiding behind your keyboard only shows what a coward you really are. Besides he was just a store manager in
BR, so what is really your problem then? You may need to go see a psychiatrist to help you to better manage and control your own anger, for clearly the problem is you and not the actors, drama or those who enjoyed watching BR.

Oh ye of little faith. Just because Wook may (or may not, since this is not a done deal yet) take on this role that is outside -your- comfort level, he does not deserve to be ripped a new one over any script deliberations. If he doesn't feel like being typecast as a rom-com lead or injure himself again in an action production, why can't he be respected for his choices?

Case in point: Taking the role of Jin-woo in "Hard Hit," even though you only hear his voice and his face is not seen until the end of the movie. Not typical of certain drama actors who would demand on being cast in a lead role, right? I respect the fact that Wook refuses to be locked inside a box, expected to repeat the same roles over and over in different projects.

That was then, and this is now. If you people still think "Healer" was his benchmark drama and everything else was crap since then, you really need to broaden your horizons. You may surprise yourselves in the end. 😉

@Cherkell I agree people are too harsh. He does need to be picky and selective though. Especially with his talent, its fine if doesn't want to do action but romcom is not the only genre. Now that he's proved he can do romcom in lovestruck in the city, I hope he does another well written show of a different genre. An OCN show or some type of thriller would be amazing. Fortunately his new Netflix show sounds promising.

I am looking forward to JCW's upcoming drama on Netflix (from JTBC) THE SOUND OF MAGIC. It looks on paper different for me:

Based on the MDL synopsis it does not look like romance for the leads, possibly FL and MSL with both being high school students.

I guess I'm not as picky as others. I first saw Ji Chang Wook in Healer, and loved him, and the drama. He became a favorite from then on. I haven't liked all his projects, but that's true of every actor. I think he's acted well in every drama I have watched: Suspicious Partner, Backstreet Rookie, K2, and Lovestruck. I want to see him in more dramas, not fewer. (I'll just skip the dramas that I don't like, after giving them at least a chance. !!!Melting!!)

Writing first time here. Just to say everyone is about healer, tbh I though the acting of JCW and PMY was great just the drama itself was OK. I found his other popular work (suspicious partner) to also be ok whilst he did serve looks but his chemistry with the FL was just lacking. After watching lovestruck in the city, I've become a fan. He just has it. I preffered his role and acting here more than healer, his healer character seemed to unrealistic and perfect. His acting in lovestruck in the city was mesmerising, he did an brilliant job with showcasing his emotions. His acting and chemistry with the FL felt so real like I was intruding. He really showed his range here it's not easy portraying a lovestruck pathetic sort of character but I totally bought it. Ioved that he was pathetic and whiney but other than that he had his shit together and was well respected in the workplace. There are people we know that are probably like that. Anyway, just throwing this out there cause I really feel like his performance was even award worthy. Its a shame the shows so underrated and some even lump it with the horrible backstreet rookie and melting me softly. This show for one has become one of my favourite already, I love that it's different from the typical kdrama with its childhood connection, love triangles and slow burn. The show portrayed love at first sight really well, since it also happens. OK, I can go on forever on how much I loved this show and jcw in it but I'll stop here lol.

Ji Chang Wook is a superb actor. One of the best I've seen. Every drama & movie, he nails the emotions & character traits perfectly. He always seems to want to improve himself, & learn from each role.

I love that he always tries something different & challenging. He is not one of these actors that plays the same type of role over & over, which gets very boring. JCW will never be stereotyped, like some. He is being very smart & broadening his chances of a long career, by showing his skills in different elements.

I for one am excited to see this unique role, & if he does take it on, it will be a chance for him to push the bar even further.
