Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

Hush: The first word that comes to mind: Disappointing. The premiere week was a little slow but I figured it was just because they were setting the stage and introducing all of the characters. But we’re on the third week now, and none of the emotional beats are landing. I’m a little tired of all the voiceovers too, it’s a little heavy-handed and constricts the storytelling. I can usually watch anything with Hwang Jung-min in it, but nothing’s clicking for me and I’ll have to pass for now.

Currently weecapping: Mr. Queen, True Beauty

Run On: This is basically going to be an ode to Im Shi-wan, so please have a seat. Never been much of an Im Shi-wan fan, wasn’t particularly interested in Run On, and wasn’t entirely convinced I would even like it. Then the first three episodes of this drama happened, and I’m totally dumbfounded (in the most heart-eyes kind of way). Did Im Shi-wan cast a spell over me or something? Quite possibly, because it’s hard to tear your eyes away from his performance here. There’s something I can’t put my finger on about the character of Sun-kyum, and that same feeling goes for the wider theme of the drama as well. I love what it’s exploring without even being able to articulate it yet. I feel the same way about the budding relationship between Sun-kyum and Mi-joo. There’s something so strong in the air between them, and I love that it’s not just romantic chemistry — it’s that, but it’s so much more. There’s depth and introspection and the acknowledgment that a person’s inner workings are often a mystery to others. I love it. And yeah, I’m now an Im Shi-wan fan. I don’t know what magic he is calling down in this drama, but I’m sold.

Lovestruck in the City: I really wanted to believe in this drama, with its new format and everything. But how does that quote go? Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. That’s pretty much how I feel about everything Ji Chang-wook lately. I keep believing he can surprise me with a great new drama… and every time I’m bitterly disappointed. How many times will I let this boy fool me? There’s definitely room for Lovestruck to get better, but right now the only thing I liked about the first episode was Kim Ji-won’s jeep.
