Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

stroopwafel

Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol: With only a couple of weeks left to go, and a time jump out of the way, I’m really happy with how the show is handling all of its many characters. I love the hair salon ajummas more than I ever expected I could, and even my least favorite character is someone I find endearing. I found Dr. Cha insufferable at first, but the dodosolsollalasol reveal and his explanation to Lala on how her graduation performance touched him was so sweet and perfectly understated. That said, I don’t like him enough to hop off the Lala-Joon ship, so I hope this week’s closing scene was some sort of high-concept performance art.

Start-Up: Every episode knocks me back emotionally, and I still can’t quite wrap my head around how perfectly pieced together Start-Up is. The sweetness and the swoon, the nerds and the dimples, it’s almost too much to handle.

missvictrix

Currently weecapping: Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol, Start-Up

More Than Friends: It’s been a rough week for my binge-watching dramas, because while I’m still enjoying this one and willing to let our strange little love un-triangle continue to play out, I really can’t bear the friend’s side plot with the mother dying of cancer. Be gone heartbreaking, illness-related plot arc!

Lies of Lies: Similarly, I had been saving up the last few episodes of this show, because I’m dying to binge right through it and learn the secret behind the murder etc. etc. etc.! (I love revenge melos!) But I really can’t bear Woo-joo’s sudden life-threatening illness and need for an organ transplant. I see why you are necessary for maternity reveals and important factoids but… Be gone heartbreaking, illness-related plot arc!

LaLaLand - they switched the writer. Because the original writer got suddenly sick. And they quickly found a random high schooler to continue with the script. Or maybe even a first grader? ...Or how else to explain episode 12?? And yet I'm still reluctant to let the show go because I like Haraboji, the Hairdresser Ahjummas (with Adopted Thuggie) and the two Youngsters. And Lee Jae Wook. I can't abandon Lee Jae Wook... right?

Start Up - did it get the LaLaLand Bug? Why the Mocking Scumbag Stepdad (and StepOppa) and Big Broken Glass Name Plate Incident? I prefer when the show is subtler. I'm still watching (and need to catch up with ep 8) as I like Halmoni and I'm interested in the Samsan progress. Plus, I can't abandon Kim Sunho... right?

Spy - I was surprised that Derek really loved Ahreum. I'm also starting thinking that Derek is not the Big Bad and that he and Jihoon will (very reluctantly) join the forces to protect Ahreum.

Still watching Japanese Kono Koi Atatamemasuka and Big Sister, though I'm worried the latter will turn into something darker.

Ep 12 of Lala land is a cop out. I was shocked at the ending scene but realised it isn't what it seems. Remember the new "start up" couple cooking up a business plan and the ending scene is their proof of concept project.

Ep 11 and 12 are too delightful to word but my favourites have to be how music brings back the harobuji couple and Rara meeting the mom of Jun with her own money envelope. Trope subversion at its best.

I guess I'm not in mood for such a cop out then 😅 ... but I loooved episode 11 with the Haraboji love story... and how the current characters played the old ones 🙂

Yes, the scene where Ra-ra took the wind of Jun's mom's sails was so well-written! I love the way that Ra-ra's concern for Jun was so evident, and especially the way she put her own envelope on the table. I had the feeling that if she got her money back from her father's secretary, Jun's Mom wouldn't have much objection to her anymore.

You're right, it's definitely part of their business strategy/concept. They looked really annoyed when Jun ruined their filming. Besides, if this was real, they all would have been wayyyy more upset. 😂

More the tears more the worth. Elder sister, Hero and his mother need to make audience cry atleast 1 bucket of tears in later episodes or i'll feel underwhelm. No need to hold anything at all. Only if there were less coincidences and links between main characters.

Tale of the Nine-Tailed: Gotta wait 2 more weeks and I'm so excited for Evil Ji-ah and the Imoogi's schemes! I know I should be hating CEO for double-crossing Yeon, but the move was so brilliant that I actually admire him for it ahaha.

Start-Up: Nothing much aside from the fact that my mom doesn't watch but apparently knows about the story because my dad talks to her about it. She's #TeamJiPyeong while he's #TeamDoSan lol.

The Blood of Zeus: binged this in one night and it kinda irks me that they're setting up Hades as the baddie in Season 2 since he's one of the chillest gods out there. Like, uh, being the god of the Underworld doesn't make him bad y'know?

Haven't caught up to the latest episodes of The Spies Who Loved Me and More Than Friends yet. Tried to continue Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 2 and Stove League from where I left off at the start of the pandemic, but I'm not really feeling it right now.

I'm watching Beyblade Burst on Netflix and it brings me back to my childhood of playing with my brother and imagining mythical creatures emerging from our Beys *sheepish grin*

Start-Up: Okay, bypassing the shipping wars to get to the really important question: When did scrunchies make a comeback? Ra Ra has some impressive ones on DDSSLLS too. I should have saved all of my scrunchies from my grade school and middle school years. Also, I love you Ji Pyeong and justice for In Jae!

Kairos: Penthouse may be the ratings winner, but I’m glad Shin Sung Rok chose this drama. I’ve been indifferent to him, but he’s rocking it here. Lee Se Young is also rocking it. I really like the short hair on her. The drama is sometimes predictable – I knew wife and kid were alive– but it is well executed and keeps me engrossed.

Birthcare Center: Even though I’m not a mom and don’t identify with everything the characters are going through, I am still loving the commentary on motherhood and child care. It's sharp with a sense of the absurd. I like how they are showing different “types” of moms and the difficulties that each of them face. Episode 4 was my favorite so far because of the bonding scene between the moms but hubby better not be cheating! Also, the nurse that does the baby talk is seriously awful.

Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol: I almost quit this drama with the Jun reveal but am glad I stuck with it. I still hate that Jun is underage and that keeps me from caring about the romance, but luckily, the secondary characters are quite fun. I love the beauty shop crew. Man-bok’s love story with his wife and the recital in Episode 11 were quite touching. As for the ending of Episode 12, I've never been so happy to see a time jump, obvious fakeouts and all though I wish it had been a longer one.

My Dangerous Wife: The wife is good at the crazy mind games. I don't buy the mistress would have eaten that food when she knew they were trying to poison each other. Two more wives with secrets.

Fly Dragon: The Samjung case is sad.

Search: Lee Hyuk is evil. With every reveal he becomes more of a monster.

Busy week - Laptop - then i also have cold so had no time to watch dramas. whatever drama watched, watched inbetween free time. 10 Minuute watch then pause and then watch more after few min/hours. so each episode sometimes take whole day to complete. Real life is important, fictional world isn't.

Korea - skip scenes - more like 15sec forward move.

Orphan family - writer played the card well. I thought it will take a while for truth to come out and half-sister will annoy for long for writer took care of all cliche, nonsense formulas in 1 week. Those cliches will be played in future with more nuisance, sugarcoat as something new. Stalker's whitewashed face. offfff.

More than trash - 4/10 - Episode 13 wasn't half bad except it was way too long and way too filler. Writer does have knack for some good lines here and there but overall writer falters.

18 - 4/10 should be titled as Baiting. trash show and had horrible last week. pity those who were moved by this garbage.

meme spy - 3/10 - that's me being generous. not a single redeeming feature can i count. mindless fun of many.

pale guy - 4/10 nothing much to say about this garbage. clearly reflects the abilities of the writer. writer is looting everyone cleanly. Title suits this line of all heros and actors as well as director and writer.

barterstall - 4/10 - This one is hot garbage and what we can say about its audience. fighting over fictional characters to stake a claim who deserves to sleep with heroine n who doesn't. Simply put a D measuring contest it is. And all that gibberish doesn't show either the healthy mind or good image of these harridans. These virtual identities are too into delusion.

Writer deserves the credit and applause. why? Everything in the show is garbage and writer has only 1 card to play and writer put all investment into that card.smart business choice. cheap manipulation, not effecting any sensible being but those who revel in physical gratification easily wag their tail and are baited. You can directly compare the mindset of audience with present day voterbases. Good similarities.

This soap-opera will keep on going on like that and writer have the gall, arrogance, confidence and more importantly that knowledge of mental state of barbie-doll audience that she doesn't fell any urgency to sit and put efforts. This was such an easy job. Bad writer, good businesswoman.

China - Usual teens trash dramas. nothing to see.

Watching on tv is far more easier than streaming. I haven't touched tv remote since 2017. I used to watch 5-6 channels and tv media at the same time. News+sports+info+tvdrama+movie channels -
- advertisement > change channel
- boring event > change channel
- comparing 2 events and picking d most imp 1 - chg channel
- -ve news fighting coemdy drama with action movie and inbetween some action of sports. best of everything.

casual viewer. easy timepass. That's how i alwasy broke tv remotes and mother always complained what i understood from things. Easy enough i was always able to get the subject matter from all. Its become habit.
streaming has skip scenes altogether. fast forward.
But i mostly do 15sec of move ahead and sometimes direct jump. That's how i can keep tab on so much of fiction.

Information channels - are known as infotainment channels. such a demotion, regression in recent years
I have seen more than 1 dozen articles lamenting what were info. channels in 1st 10 years of 21st cen. and what has it come down to in recent years. such a fall. And 1major factor all those articles and opinions considered was - audience.
So our information channels have become - reality shows wearing the facemask of info+entertainment.
As i always say - supply-demand.
Audience has to answer a lot rather than pointing fingers are media houses.

Start Up - I love this show but man are the fans annoying, I would love to go into a comment section and not see absolute garbage because at this point it almost feels like I'm watching a different show than everyone else. Yes Kim Seonho is amazing and I love that he's so popular now but I would also like for his fans to stop demonizing the main character and attaching personality traits to him that he doesn't posses just because they want Ji Pyeong to be the lead. I've seen paragraphs calling Do San manipulative, obsessive, a bad person, a user etc when he's never been any of those things? I don't understand the mental gymnastics it takes to see him as manipulative for doing nothing and see Ji Pyeong as a special little baby despite him being the one that has refused to allow Do San to tell Dal Mi the truth over and over again? Anyway the fans are awful but this show is great and I hope it doesn't let down in the second half because I love all of the characters and just want everyone to stop lying to each other.

I never understood that people that in order to show their love to something or someone have to hate the opposite, call it a drama character, a politician, a football team or a tech brand. It must be exhausting, and you know, real life already exhaust me to waste energy on that kind of fight.

Totally! Lol I'm surprised at how many people are obsessing over HJP and demonizing Do San considering how popular Nam Joo Hyuk - that's just how much people get attached to the characters I guess. There are people writing essays and I'm just like ?????? Stop fighting over tv show characters wtf This has really started to irk me because I can't enjoy the show without getting irritated by this three-way romance that Kdrama writers really seem to enjoy. It seems to be working because everyone is fighting over it. I'm going to drop Kdramas if I see another love triangle with the lead characters, I'm staying this time for Do San. Ugh. Nerd Do San has my heart.

Also, the first episode was about creating the base for HJP which the writer did so well and suddenly introduced another character as the main guy for the girl so I guess that's the trick to get people really into the whole love triangle bullshit.

START-UP is a really well written show and the reactions of the fans prove it. We have characters who are so well presented in all of their complex human-ness that people can actually see them in differing lights. You are absolutely right in your comments but please forgive the commenters- I think that what is happening is that they are viewing the show through the lens of a normal Kdrama rom-com (and, given the writer's own past shows who can blame them for those expectations?) and as a result do not appreciate the extent to which the writer this time has adapted a classic play written in 1891 about three real people who lived 250 years before that. (Note- The real Cyrano is actually an important figure in literary history- he was the first modern science fiction novelist). That play was not a rom-com but a melo- and Rostand had himself thoroughly researched his characters.

The writer is succeeding in breaking out of the normal mold and giving us multi-faceted characters which makes 'mis-reading' (or perhaps more fairly 'alternate reading") them possible. Just as in the original play much of the plot of this show is driven by our character's flaws and insecurities so it should not be surprising that fans could find different interpretations of our characters.

In any case it appears that the 'reveal' of the truth of the letters is coming soon. We will see where the show takes our story from there.

Agreed. Let's stop the shipping wars and do knitting reviews of each episode instead. Ep 5 20/10 for opening with knitting, but seriously, Dosan is still knitting garter stitching without shaping when he should have years of experience? Ep 6, 40/10 Dosan does stockinette stitching with novelty yarn and shaping. Ep 7, 20/10 for the Dosan knitting rib stitching segment. Ep 8, 40/10 for all three Samsan Tech boys knitting seed stitches together. I need to re-watch episode 9 focusing on the knitting to properly review the knitting in the most current episode.

I'm hoping its the edging of what will eventually be beautiful matching sweaters for all three boys.

I have never understood why scarves are always suggested for a first project. They take forever and it’s soul destroying

@beffels—I know this all too well. I spent the better of the 90s trying to knit one scarf. My mother's response was always, "What's wrong with you? Can you just—*knit, knit, knit*—see? Easy!"

7

@tsutsuloo even as an established knitter scarves are the bane of my life - my now-husband-then-boyfriend asked me to knit him a scarf and I had to undo the cursed thing about three times before he was happy with how wide it was going to be....and then it also had to be super long. It took forever and of course now he never wears it! It is a gorgeous scarf but never again 😂

6

@beffels I hope you never knit him anything again. But you should steal that scarf back and use it yourself.

5

@beffels if your life was a k drama you would of thought he just wasn't interested in the scarf and given it to your very handsome best friend aka the second lead.
When your boyfriend saw it he would of course be jealous and petty and snatch it from the sl's neck. Or try but of course he demanded it be extra long so instead he must runaround the sl to unwind the whole thing.
He then wears it every day refusing to ever give it up.

5

@beffels amen. Your first project should just be swatches to teach you the importance of gauge and simultaneously garter and stockinette stitches. The only scarves I can stand to knit now is lace scarves because at least that doesn't bore me to death and I can test out lace patterns to incorporate into a shawl or sweater.

4

@beffels

:D. I so feel for you and there was ever a pure statement of love that scarf must be it.

As someone from the subtropics needing a scarf is a sign I have moved too far north. I absolutely despise the feeling of them around my neck and are a sign I am in a place way too cold for me.

Sure, I do understand their necessity and why they work visually and in fashion spreads (similar to how smoking created visuals around actresses faces). However, even on that point they are part of a fashion construction prevalent from temperate and cold climates about layering and that is an anathema to the tropics/subtropics.

When I hear nice scarf, my inside head voice is just whispering wrong latitude.

4

I apologize for demonizing Do San. I believe I was the one who started it. This episode proved to me that Do San is slowly starting to creep into my heart. The drinking scene and the scene when he kept calling Dal Mi over and over made me stop and listen. And for the first time, I forgot about Ji Pyeong and I watched him. Only him. Him with Dal Mi. Him with his friends. Him with his parents. That touched my heart. Do San is slowly creeping into my heart.

But when Ji Pyeong cried in front of Halmoni, I cried. I cried so hard knowing that he won’t get Dal Mi. I cried to hard knowing how heartbroken he will be. I cried so hard knowing how broken we will be. And I cried for all the Ji Pyeongs in this world, losing the girl of their dreams to someone unexpected.

I’m sorry, Do San. I’m sorry, Ji Pyeong. I’m sorry, guys but today my heart is very very very heavy.

I told sunset about you : this is so much beyond my understanding but wow... And knowing who the writer was surprised me, I think it's because she plays a supporting character in another show, but apparently she wrote my ambulance and o negative...

Nine tail fox, unpopular opinion rang beds no redemption especially from us entitled humans... Yes he might get punished by the rules of the supernatural but like many have asked Yeon, why choose your kind over humans, where humans still continue to hurt nature and animals forever... I have more to say but let's leave that for the recaps...

#remolove : this is everything in one... And this is why I love, love triangles in jdramas it is never really about the romance but the people around the romance ... It's just a chaotic funny mess that has no perfect ending unless you wrote the show you can't know what will happen, but have of my eggs are in lemons basket... China with your nonsense ever repeating romances come and learn, all you ever do is change the job, school department or level of study and then same story over and over...

Love is sweet:after all the insults can I just say, hot damn... Plot same as ever romance between actual adults... And shout out to the male leads nose God sure creates wonders....

Cherrymaho: sometimes I forget how slow jdramas can be... Like I honestly do am like how are we at épisode 6 and we are still here, that time it's like 10 episodes 18mins each... Am okay with the pace but here's the thing we don't have enough episodes for such a pace...

That's why Chinese romance garbage is literal porn. actors change, set location change content remains the same.
And that's what i have said so many times about nonsensical romance kdramas - Here couples are created with barest of logic for the function of story. Here we get couple development that easily eats away all of characters. the filmsy romance is just abhorrent delusion that never recognizes individuality. In the end what audience gets is food with almost no nutrients, but more chemicals.

Yeeeeeeeesssssss to your take on Tale of the Nine Tailed. I've been saying this! This show takes an unfortunately black and white stance on a grey moral issue in not questioning the laws of the supernatural office within the narrative. The fact that Yeon is so devoted to humans at the expense of his own kind has a lot of painful real world racial/ethnic parallels that I'm hyper aware of, so I wish the show were deep enough to discuss it. The suffering animals have experienced at the hands of humans in the narrative should have been a point of defense/debate for more characters than the magistrate. The fact that Yuri and Shin joo and Rang have really suffered at the hands of humans, but they never use that fact to justify their actions in the face of Yeon's judgemental attitude is kind of frustrating. Like I want them to say, forget the underworld office, and the rules, do you honestly believe human lives matter more, Yeon? That would have been a really interesting conversation, considering the subtext inherent in Yeon's apparent preference for humans. But anyway, yeah. I found Rang's cruelty and sadism to be dark and disturbing responses to his own suffering as a child, but also far more compelling indications of compromised morality. But the baseline fact that he's killed humans should not be upheld as an objective indication of clear villainy within this world. But, unfortunately, the show kind of writes it that way.

Good to see someone who see what I see...

Everyone keeps saying redemption, redemption but from who's perspective??? Us as the humans who don't have rules to punish us for hurting other kinds or them as the people who are constantly punished...

Like I said I agree that they have rules and rang broke them, but if we move from the black and white which isn't black and white when will they create a reverse yeon who protects his kind and stops humans who hurt people like rang, yuri and shinju...
Personally in most of the cases, rang is that asshole that knows magic comes at a price and never ever tells the buyers this...

So meet me in e12 recap... Because yuri asked him how are you still choosing humans over your dying brother?? But at the same time knowing he would give up all of them for one human, ji ah

Start Up. Still no Female character development, women are there to complement men. I’m not invested AT ALL in the love story. It’s not that I don’t like DoSan as nerd and DalMi as the sweetest dreamy and strong woman she is, but I just don’t ship them. That kiss came out of the blue and felt flat. We all know Cyrano never gets the girl. I’m terribly sad, I have been saying this from episode 1.

Search. Can’t wait to the final episodes this weekend. Lf. Lee didn’t disappoint me, I how Cap. Song won’t disappoint me either. And certain imoogi could learn a thing or two from Congressman Lee about being really scary.

Kairos. I feel so sorry for SeoJin, he’s probably not the most empathic guy ever, but he doesn’t deserve everything he’s going through. I like the fact that even if I suspect where the drama is going, I’m surprised by the way I’m being told the story.

Birthcare center. Dropped. I liked the quirky humor and the fact that it wa supposed to be a women centered drama, but I can’t let aside the fact that mums spend more time with each other than with their newborn babies (like days old), or that a woman who is breastfeeding leaves her very few days old child to go to a fancy restaurant to have dinner, I mean… is she even in the mood? besides in the middle of episode 3 I still don’t know what the drama is about.

Tale of the Nine Tailed. If episode 9 was fantastic, what about episode 11? And then when I thought episode 12 was just a filler… that ending? I’m really worried the show is keeping its high expectations and now me, the one who firmly believed at least one of my distracting foxes would die, is hoping for the fox gang to live happy ever after. I’m going to be a mess and you all will tell me “I told you”.

Six Flying Dragons. Liking the path, it’s not as slow as I thought and learning about SK history while watching. Middle Ages were Middle Ages in every single country.

I started Start Up but couldn’t get anywhere with it. I thought it was just because it was during election week, and my brain just could not grasp anything beyond basic human necessities, but if there’s no female character development then meh. People have started gifing the knitting, and that’s probably all I need really.

Well if you are looking for strong female characters it's got one of the best I've ever seen - that personifies womanhood for me - in Halmeoni. Now that's a kickass female full of flaws and love. Watching Start Up is worth it just for her.

I liked halmoni more than I do.
I need an explanation on why she has totally forgotten InJae. She’s accepted and defended her ex daughter in love, is overly protective about DalMi, an deeply cares for DoSan and goodboy but has been ignoring her other granddaughter since she came back to Korea. Not that I don’t love her, but I find this particularly subject really irritating.

But Halmeoni is also the type to let her children come to her, so to speak. I get the feeling In Jae is th one who wasn't open to overtures so Halmeoni is giving here space. And it could e a cultural thing - definitely where I am from the elders don't run after the youngsters.

The only person that Halmeoni has proactively reached out to us Ji Pyeong - and that too when he was young. Not since.

Using your comment for that drama -

I was right and fast enough to back from my investment in this predictable show going far too easily down. Now its another of those korean action timepass dramas where you are openly served same old stale dishes. I don't even feel pity for the hero-father Because he's not more than a loud typical kdrama male setup.

In the episodes I watched, breastfeeding is highly encouraged, but the problem for me is timing. Like mums have lots of spare time between take and take and besides, they are only with their babies when they're breastfeeding and then dads are just around, but babies spend all the time in a nursery. It doesn't make sense.

MY DANGEROUS WIFE: (Ep 10) Are all wives dangerously bored with their roles as to become vengeful sociopaths? Despite the cliffhanger, I don't think Chef is going to get his freedom so easily.
TALE OF THE NINE TAILS: (Ep 10) The Afterlife administrator is getting very annoying by not giving us basic information on the mythological rules and framework for the show. The imoogi internship seems superficial if he is really a powerful beast that can take souls, including Jia's, at will. Give us some solid reasons for imoogi's plans so we can see if it can work out.
BIRTHCARE CENTER: (Ep 1) I don't know about this show. Is it a dark comedy? Is it a post birth depressing narrative? Or at the end of this episode, a horror cult film? It seems like too many different genres competing for air time.
Variety:
HOW DO YOU PLAY? The live Refund Sisters' performance at the nursing academy was the highlight of the past few weeks as the show winds to its end.

I really haven't been watching too many K-dramas lately but what I have been watching.

Start-up: I just started it. I'm not really a Suzy fan, but I liked the other actors in it so I decided to give it a chance. I like it alot, way funnier than I expected. The National Anthem conversation one of the funniest things I've seen in a while.

DDSSLLS: My brain checked out for the stalking plot but now that it's over I'm more invested in it. But I'm wondering what else the story has to offer since we have 4 more episodes. I'm fine with cute funny fluff, but still.

As I said I haven't been watching alot kdramas, but I have been watching J-Dramas just to switch things up a bit.

#Remolove: This one surprised me, the story went alot of places I didn't expect. It's also pretty funny, with alot of situational gags and not slapstick that you see in alot of Jdramas.

Neechan no Koibito: On the surface is a cute show about a sister who took care of her younger brothers, falling in love. But it's definitely one of those that gets super depressing the more you watch & learn.

Kono Koi Atatamemasuka: A lowkey show about a woman discovering a new dream of making pastries. Cute and simple, nice thing to just watch & chill.

Araburu Kisetsu no Otomedomo yo: About a group fo HS girls learning about sex and relationships. Really just filled with emotional pain, but that's my kinda watch.

Begin Again: The only Chinese Drama I'm currently watching. Contract marriage between a female CEO & Doctor. Pretty basic but the comedy and acting keeps me in. But it does seem like someone watched alot of It's OK Not To Be, because the female lead definitely reminds me of a certain someone.

Neechan no Koibito
Kasumi Arimura is so good on camera even when there is not a lot there. What tugs at your heart at the moment is that all the pointers right in front of us point to a relationship (with everyone living their public face - as we are all expected to). The issue is, given what is being hinted at behind those public facades means the unseen end is potentially so devastating, particularly in societies like Japan.

Kono Koi Atatamemasuka
I find this show such an interesting metaphor for loss of being special as a child (adulation) and finding some meaning as an adult. I don't know if it is just me but how refreshing is it to see relationships that are not all backstabbing rivals. The competition is more like competition within team rather than a death match...or is this the shows biggest fantasy component? Seriously hope the conbini dinner gang get a spin off 15min web drama.

Ah, I had more time this week to watch my dramas, so for some reason I end up finishing 3 and started a few others/had time for weekly ones.

18 Again - I really enjoyed this drama. I really like when stories are told like this, there is a structure, it is not like "oh lets have a drama and we will see how it goes". The stories were told beautifully and meaningfully. It broke my heart when the mother of the little girl said those things to her in the restaurant. Right there, even knowing it is a fictional character, I wished she would grow up okay, without that memory.

Zombie Detective - Also finished this one. I love how this show made fun of itself. And I really liked that it was only 12 episodes. Its a fun show.

Misaeng - Finished! It is really is one of the best shows out there. One of a kind. The cast was freaking amazing. So many actors, extras, etc and still it was amazing. Totally in love with Kang So-Ra. I still need some time to process this, but it is in my top 10 list of best dramas. I cant believe the writer went and did The Bride of Habaek after this.

Start Up - At this point... (episode 8) I am team nobody. Too many lies. A lie to hide another lie. I dont like how they got the money. The kiss was so meh. Am I supposed to cheer for them as a couple now? Cause like, no. I am currently meh with this show.

My mister - I was gonna watch one episode per day. End up watching 5 the first day and when I looked it was 2 am. I could not stop thinking about it and how the set up for this drama was done. It is a great set up, isnt it? And you kinda dont know where it will go. I love it. I wanted to start Search:WWW, because of Jang Ki-Yong, and end up with oh, he is in it too.

It’s such a powerful drama, I’m glad you liked it. To me Jang Geu Rae is probably the character that’s touched my heart the most in any drama I’ve watched.
The world would be a better place if we all saw it with his eyes.

I'm in the minority here, but I just couldn't gel to Misaeng to keep going past Ep 6. I think I was setting myself up for a My Ahjussi type of show, (same director) so I ended up a bit disappointed on that regards. I can definitely understand the praise though, telling the real people stories about working class people. Also, portrayed that lifestyle and its workers in a very realistic and humanistic way. I think all the actors are fabulous, but I guess I wasn't in the right mood for it. Maybe next time?

18 Again - It's finished. It was such a heartwarming show even though the sudden change to the original Dae-myung was abrupt still it wrapped up well. Lee Do-hyun will rise as one of the best actors in his generation. The way he acted Ajusshi Dae-myung was excellent!

Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol - ep12 took a sudden turn xD Writer-nim probably ran out of ideas to separate Rara & Jun. BUT Haraboji's love story???? That was lovely and we got to see LJW in that timeline.

Private Lives ep9 - More like till 20mins of ep9, I seriously have no idea what's going on. There's a ledger that could potentially reveal all dirt, ex reporter has it, GT is some higher being that controls/spies into the private lives of people, Seohyun's character keeps shouting at people and it always sounds the same... she gets nothing done. Kyung-po is missing for the most part.. Ohwell, I'm no longer interested and so I'm dropping it.

Tale of Nine-tailed - I was about to drop this one but caught up till ep11 the other day, Imoogi was creepy and Yeon is smart! Though that lady in the office thing is doing nothing at all. Does she want to save Yeon? or protect the people from dying? Or just annoying the viewers with her shout? Or this is her way to keep the balance? But people died when they were not supposed to and she let it happen.

The Spies Who Loved Me - I was so sure that Derek approached A-reum because she was the Ji-hoon's ex, looks like no and he really married her for love. A-reum's honestly continues to amaze me, she's a rare FL in dramaland!

Start-up - Finally, the truth is out and we can now start-up *winks**doesn't make sense* again! Can we have more bromance and then JP-Halmoni scenes??

@Guardians-of-the-Late-Night-Ramyeon and all the repliers here, make me want to write back.

At the moment, I only watch 'Tale of the Nine-Tailed Fox' because I really love myth. I watch and google about some mystic characters those mentioned in the drama. For me, the writer is witty and can intertwined the story well. The villain as strong and as clever as the hero, and hopefully, the female-lead stays as strong and smart and not to be a typical damsel in distress. If I continue I may write an essay.

The second is 'The Fly Dragon'. Although it be almost impossible happens in the real world, but I love watching an underdog team gets the win. The main leads are both grumpy ajusshi but with soft heart and not-very-educated-background. But, they push and push and push, till somehow God gives them the reward through their kindness and dedication (that's my saying, kekeke...).

Other than these two, I can't push myself to watch others. I tried, but only 2 first episodes and I dropped them. I don't want to watch only to feel dissatisfied and later on angry about it.

Or, if you want try web drama, I just watch 'Single & Ready to Mingle'. 8 episode @ 15 minutes. The stars almost all rookies. It tells about two girls from all women schools, yet they apply to women university, have to mingle with boys. One scares of boy, the other thinks those boy who tries to get close to her must be loves her. It chaos... Well, I was there, once (in a blue moon).

If you write an essay on Nine-Tailed, I would definitely read it. Everything you described sounds perfect! I had been avoiding it because I don’t do horror and it sounded a bit scary that way, but I do really love a good strong female lead. And I’m a super fan of grumpy ajusshis too! And hahaha Single already sounds hilarious and definitely relatable !

But most of all, what you said: “I don’t want to watch only to feel dissatisfied and later on angry...” - so much this! I just don’t have the energy for it in 2020.

She was pretty - it was an easy watch, but once the couple got together there really was not enough plot to sustain 16 episodes. But Park Seo Joon is always a bonus so it was alright.
Her private life - like She was pretty and a lot of other rom coms this too suffered from a lack of plot in later episodes, so they threw in an unecessary reveal about a childhood connection and dead brother. That didn't bother me because it was a pleasant watch. And the leads were great together, I loved the communication and understanding between them. And although the male lead seemed to become the focus in the second half, he was one of the nicests I've seen, from begining to end, one of those you just know would be as common as a unicorn in real life. So in the end I'm happy to have watched this drama.
The Package- I'm halfway thought this and I feel this is an underrated gem. I quite like it so far.
Search WWW: I like it better now that I'm a few episodes in.
Also watching Start Up, Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol and Kairos.

Really liked that the drama doesn't wrap up in a typical hapilly ever after! It underscores that relationships exist in time, with ups and downs, and that they need work and a lot of honesty to be fulfilling. That felt real - even when you love each other to bits, there's always some bickering envolved in sharing your life with someone.
Also, Jihoon recognizing that he can't take somebody else's place felt like a nice growth arc for the character. And Wi Hajoon as Jihoon was such a dreamboat - he just made me go to Asian wiki and find out about his previous dramas. I'm totally watching Matrimonial Chaos next

- TALE OF THE NINE-TALED: in this drama people TALK! I'm so incredulous and used to the opposite, that I feared Ji-a would go to the date with the Imoogi without talking to Yeon!
Then, I'm glad I have no idea how the story will end, even if I hope there will be a happy ending for all.

- HOMEMADE LOVE STORY: the big secret has already been revealed! I'm very surprised. I half expected the story would drag before the revelation, and I'm happy it didn't.

- ENDING AGAIN: a web drama with a contract marriage. Not very engaging so far, but I plan to finish it, since it's only 3 hours long.

PILOTS

- RECORD OF YOUTH: I'm on the fence with this. I liked PBG in Encounter, and Degree of love was my very first drama, so I wanted to watch something else from the same writer. But the first half of the episode was a little boring, and the second was emotionally painful.

- THE SCHOOL NURSE FILES: I don't know yet what message this drama wants to convey, but I liked very very much the vibe of the pilot!

- THE SPIES WHO LOVED ME: I'm hooked. Yoo In-na is lovely as always and she has good chemistry with Eric Mun. They are cute together.

- LOST ROMANCE: not yet hooked. The ML's sister is super evil and the episode was a little over the top, but I'll watch at least other 2 or 3 episodes, because I think the story hasn't yet started, and because our Beanie @smaltwalt seems to have loved this very much.

I do not think that a connection to the other characters is dramatically necessary- these would be additional story lines. For instance, we might get a fauxcest storyline between Lee Ra-hoon and the beautiful college girl who is pursuing him. One of the advantages of the long weekender is that it makes such multiple story lines possible.

Reply 1988🏡 (20/20): @sc325 It feels like I am the last person to move out from that lovely neighborhood. I had been getting a bit impatient to move to another K-drama world, but saying goodbye still made me sad.🥺 These two episodes were about growing up and growing closer for me. Characters went through different phases like discovering their professional calling, or menopause, retirement and rediscovering their identity when they were older. It taught me that being a late bloomer is okay, first of all because there will be more phases to go through in the future anyway. Another reason why it is okay is that there will always be loved ones there for you, no matter how much obstacles or arguments you will have to face first. Jung-Hwan inherited the grumpiness from his mom, but he takes good care of her whenever she needs a daughter.💪 Mi-Ok’s absence was very realistic and painful, but she came back after a few years and rekindled her friendships and romantic relationship, which is also very true to life sometimes. The same goes for Sun-Woo and Bora. I personally felt that the break-up was a necessary phase to get them back together for good (and Taek trying not to laugh as the others found out!😆). Sometimes you simply know people all your life while they appear and disappear, until they suddenly become a (non-romantic) fixed presence in your life. Just look at the amount of people that showed up at Dong-Ryong’s restaurant!❤️

Zombie Detective🧟🕵️‍♂️ (8/12): @sc325 I did start this one!😀This show is hilarious, and when it is not hilarious I just remind myself that this is all Choi Jin-Hyuk and that in itself is an hilarious fact.😂 His voice acting in the monologues is on point, his facial expressions are priceless, his body language perfect,…what a charming beast!😉 And adorable too!😊 I have this urge to hug him all the time, but that would probably be unhygienic and very unwelcome.😆

Shopping King Louie 🛒🤴 (1/16): My cup of tea on paper, but somehow I could not warm up to the play button until now. My friend wanted to rewatch and it seemed to bring a lot of laughter and comfort to many Beanies then and now, so here we are. I am giving Ziggy and the beloved cast the benefit of the doubt to get me invested later on. If not, I will at least get to relax during all the current chaos.😄

I have only ever cried at two dramas; one was rage tears at how. incredibly. badly. it went off the rails at the end. The other was during the last scene of Reply 1988, when they do one last visit to the neighborhood. Like you, I felt like I was the last to move out, and I wept.

I was a stop-and-start with Shopping King Louis, too, though. The OTP was adorable together, and that's essentially what kept me going, albeit I watched with probably only one eye.

18 Again - Ended with everything tied in a neat little bow and I actually liked that! Though I could have done with more LDH in the last episode.

DDSSLLS - I think they handled the separation and time-jump about as well as they could. Loved the reveal about the supposedly mean friend - this show does a very good job of subverting expectations.

Private Lives - It takes me ages to get through 2 episodes of this show because it seems to be deliberately obtuse in its writing and because I don't actually most of the characters. More LHJ please!

Tale of the Nine-Tailed - Loved the Yeon and Rang play in episode 12 but episode 12 was relatively underwhelming.

The Spies Who Loved Me - For a spy thriller, it's not very thrilling but I'm still watching for the chemistry between the 3 leads.

Search - Finale this week. I anticipate a lot more dead bodies.

Kairos - Parked so I can watch 3 episodes together next week.

Start-up - Paused till the show ends so I can watch it altogether. My brain cannot take the SLS anymore.

More than Friends - Still on pause...

Ugh so many typos 🤦‍♀️
I meant to say I don't like the characters in Private Lives and I enjoyed episode 11 of Tale of the Nine-Tailed not episode 12!

18 Again (Episode 15-16) - Mood: B-
And the kids never find out the truth, boo! Ok, I have to talk about the awkward elephant in the room: do we accept the (supposedly) divine intervention that allowed the physical transformations as a MacGuffin? Although my heart loves to suspend disbelief, objectively speaking I find it weird that not even Woo Young sought answers for his predicament. I’m also unimpressed at the random Truck of Doom and Noble Idiocy this week and found the HEA ending a little too bland for my taste, however, I remain pleased with all the heartfelt emotions the drama has delivered over its run. Thank you!

Birthcare Center (Episode 3-4) - Mood: B+
Don’t you dare make Do Yoon a cheater, Writer! I’ve had enough of Yoon Park being a jerk from his other show and you shall not mess this up! I think the big weakness of the show so far is the thriller element: the satirical portrayal of the center alludes to how society harshly treats its working moms and strips them of their identity which already is a narrative meat mine of its own. With half of its run already done, I fear that the writing may be way too ambitious, even if the setups are already done. Why do I have a feeling though that we’ve already met the mom going after Glue Stick?

Search (Episode 7-8) - Mood: C+
How many times have we seen Soo Young wandering around by herself? It’s ridiculous that she’s left alone without any adult accompaniment when she’s sick! We all knew she was a blatant plot device as seen from the camcorder episode but her wandering into the DMZ without anyone knowing is just terrible writing (and it’s laughable that the military also let Da Jung, another civilian, into the DMZ). I do think it’s totally ham-fisted that Ye Rim’s father managed to find Dong Jin’s father in the middle of the DMZ alive and somehow kill himself while transferring the substance but it is what it is.

Start-Up (Episode 7-8) - Mood: C
After teasing us about the hooded guy out for revenge last week, the show decided to just not develop it and let it stay in the shadows (no, I don’t count the 5-second scenes of CEO’s memory or the Yong San bait): I guess the writer plans to save it for the third-quarter conflict and spring it out when the big secret is out. If I had to guess, I’ll bite on the bait: I think we’re going for a Chul San / Sa Ha love line which leaves him as the only colleague without an arc (unless writer wants yet another love triangle). Anyway, Park Chan Ho drama miracle aside (rolls eyes), where did Alex disappear to?

Also watching:
Private Lives (Episode 11-12) - Mood: C-, The second leads have finally reunited!
The Spies Who Loved Me (Episode 6-7) - Mood: D, I’m watching but I’m just not engaging with the story.
More Than Friends (Episode 11-12) - Mood: D-,
Tale of the Nine Tailed (Episode 11-12) - Mood: D, Imoogi is a stupidly cartoonish villain.

Regarding 18 Again...

I am truly truly okay with throw-away magic to create impossible scenarios. Any extra time spent on the mechanics of "how" bores me and I skip skip skip.

As for the wrapped up happy ending. I kinda loved it. I think it always depends on how attached I am on to the characters whether I even watch the wrap-up endings, but this one was great.

From the phone call "exclusive story" to the "wrong text thread", I was loving the small character moments.
