Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol: There were so many fun, sweet moments this week but I can’t even enjoy them right now because my brain is just fritzing at this inexplicable decision by the writer to have Joon be a high schooler. I just…WHY make him a high schooler?!

Start-Up: I feel like I’ve been swept off my feet, because I was not expecting to enjoy Start-Up as much as I am. We’re treading familiar territory in a lot of ways, but even the most familiar turns can feel fresh with a new interpretation, and I’m enjoying seeing three main leads who all have something so sweet, real, and pure about them. Kim Sun-ho (and Nam Da-reum) were so fantastic that I have no idea how Nam Joo-hyuk is going to even be a real player for Suzy’s affections, but I really want to root for that sweet, knitter nerd. I’m willing to be patient and see where the story takes us.

Do You like Brahms
: What a gem of a show! After a few tough episodes, all I wanted was for Song-ah and Joon-young to be happy, and I’m glad we were given a happy ending, despite the heartbreak and pain to get there. The show wasn’t perfect (Jung-kyung being one unfortunate weak spot), but the overall production, solid acting, and thoughtful story outshined the weaker moments. Park Eun-bin and Kim Min-jae were delightful together and so convincing in their roles. They will remain as Song-ah and Joon-young in my mind for a while… I’m already experiencing withdrawals.

Tale of the Nine Tailed: I’m digging this show. The show felt vaguely familiar at first (à la Goblin and Hotel del Luna and semi-Twilight vibes), but once the creepiness hit in the second week, I was sold on the OCN-like horror and the fantasy world. Jo Boa is killing it as the sharp and bold heroine, and of course, Lee Dong-wook is perfect as the typecasted immortal character. One thing I find strange yet amusing is the censorship — some of the hell knives in Lee Yeon’s body were blurred out and some of the language was censored — as if the producers didn’t check what could be aired. Love an occasional rule breaker.

Tale of the Nine Tailed: It’s been a bittersweet and super-busy drama week for me, what with saying goodbye to our Brahmsie couple, saying hello to our Start-Up triangle (it hurts already), and staring at Jang Dong-yoon in his new drama. All of this to say that I’m behind in Nine Tailed — but I’m still enjoying it! It’s a little bit too creepy for me overall, and that abused dog was pretty much more than I could stand, but the rest of it is A-OK. It’s rando and crazy, and sometimes I don’t know why/how certain scenes connect, but the emotions running through it work for me, and I’m getting more and more fond of this Yeon + Jia dynamic. Bring on the ill-fated gothic romance!

Lies of Lies: Currently on pause, but very much missed.

Currently Recapping: Tale of the Nine Tailed

Do You Like Brahms: I was pretty satisfied with the ending, and it was rewarding to see Song-ah and Joon-young free themselves from expectations and just be happy. But I was confused by Song-ah’s choice. There was this strange all or nothing attitude toward playing an instrument like you had to either choose to be a professional musician or give it up entirely. Have these people never heard of hobbies? Song-ah spent the entire drama saying how much she loved the violin, so I felt frustrated during the last episode. I didn’t expect much out of this drama going in, but it turned out to be a lovely surprise. I loved the way music was incorporated throughout the drama to add nuance to our characters and give atmosphere. But is that what university music programs are actually like?! The level of pettiness and unnecessary competition was frightening.

Zombie Detective: Watching Sun-ji training Moo-young like a dog was great, as were her “solutions” in general. Every time she brought out that frying pan like she was Princess Peach, I cracked up. But I totally forgot that this is only 12 episodes and will be ending next week! I guess the final episodes will be focused on Dr. Squints-in-Concentration and on trying to find a cure.

Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol: He’s a teenager?! I … did not expect that, and now I feel vaguely uncomfortable. So long as both parties are adults, I respect their agency and don’t have huge issues with age gaps. However, I don’t see why it was necessary to make him a high schooler here. The story would work perfectly well if he were in his 20s and we didn’t have to think of him in a school uniform. I really hope Lala finds out before anything progresses because that would be upsetting. Reveal aside, I’m still enjoying the heck out of this drama.

Tale of the Nine Tailed: Only one episode in, but I’m so in love. I’m really into the random comical one-liners from Lee Dong-wook, and am hoping that the tone of the first episode carries through until the end. Jia is a strong and intelligent female lead. Oftentimes, the viewers are the ones who are in the know first when something goes awry. Jia seems to be alert and resourceful, always staying one step ahead. It’s kind of refreshing to not be yelling at my screen in frustration when things go wrong!

LOL @ Zombie Detective. The poor guy will be forever traumatized by frying pans, even if he somehow can become a human again. I am guessing that he somehow became a zombie because his body was left in a pile of probably toxic, mutagenic, immortal, and carcinogenic waste.

Do You Like Brahms: I just want to applaud the actors. The way they play their instruments are believable, at least to my novice eyes. I'm happy that our main leads got their sweet happy ending and I'm also glad they don't force reconciliation on our secondary couple. I wish the writers put more depth in their character development. I don't feel they really resolve the lack of communication in our main couple that leads to their breakup. The side characters kind of being brush aside. I don't regret watching this show but i think i would have enjoyed it more as 12 episoder with reduction on angst time.

Top Star Yoo Baek (1-2): Nothing ground breaking in story plot but the village people are super cute. My eyes happily devour shirtless Kim Ji-Seok but its grandma cooking that make me drool.

Start Up and Do Do Sol La La: i group them together since I still watch both but just as side shows that I watch while doing house chores. I just need to switch off my brain and not taking anything seriously.

I am OBSESSED with Start Up! I was hooked after the first episode. It's been a long time since I've been this hyped up about a drama and look forward to it all week. I know some people are annoyed that Dal-Mi and Do-San's relationship will be started on a lie, but, meh, many K-Drama's start that way. Excited to see where this drama goes.

Doesn't the twist in DDSSLLS give High School King vibes? I'm not mad. I was totally weirded out at first but remembering how much I loved HSK AND I Hear Your Voice, I'm mildly excited.

Do You Like Brahms? - will continue to be one of my best dramas and I am seriously having withdrawal symptoms now. This is the first show that had me watching as soon as the English subs was up which is at around 7am my time, and I dont usually wake up that early.

Zombie Detective - watching this with hubby. We love the parodies and the fact that it is not taking itself too seriously so it's fun.

18 Again - love the family drama, and I think I have double, triple(?) SLS. Happy that Captain Firefly Lee Do-Hyun is doing great. And glad also to learn that 2 other streaming sites are it up so I am not hostage to just iQiYi.

Binged-watch Age of Youth 1 and 2 just because I now have a girl crush on Park Eun Bin.. and glad I did.

I think that I had been a serial dropper recently, as I dropped/dropping most of the live-watch dramas now.. (Alice, ROY, Twinkle, Nine-Tailed, Friends) so methinks I will wait until Start-Upnis complete before I watch.

Meanwhile, starting Maiden Holmes and Into The Ring..

DYLB : Loved it loved it loved it. Despite the flaws loved it. It was my kind of melo. It hurts but I like being hurt that way. Some extra fluffy scenes would have been nice. Will make do with bts.
And for some reason I kept thinking about JBL after finishing this drama. Both gave me same feelings.
Romantic doctor teacher kim : Okay I started this awhile ago but stopped after 3 episodes. Picked it up again(not because of KMJ and I'm a big liar). Loving it and so excited that I have a sequel readpy to watch after this. Normally I don't watch medical dramas except House md. But the medical stories are nice and feel authentic. I can recommend it to my colleagues. My only quibble is that wish that they could include more medical stories instead of surgical ones(coz I'm a GP). Guess they won't be that dramatic.
Start up : I love the writer and Nam Joo Hyuk. Liking it but not that excited. Halmoni is love.

Do You Like Brahms? - I totally melted for this show when it started and genuinely enjoyed it up until about episodes 9/10. I didn't mind it moving slowly but I do feel like it got stuck in quicksand for too many episodes. That said, it did an admirable job of wrapping up the show, and I was impressed with how episode 16 didn't rush or time jump. I would have liked to have seen a more interesting arc for JK (they started so strong!) and I don't understand why SA sold her violin. I was ready to bid this one farewell but am glad I could do so with a sweet taste in my mouth.

Tale of the Nine-Tailed - this show is kind of a hot mess, and maybe that's why I'm enjoying it so much. It's tropey, sure, but at the same time I have no idea where it's really going - that and the mythology is keeping me hooked. LDW looks like he's having a great time, the brother relationship is randomly both hilarious and heartwarming (despite them literally trying to kill each other), there's some surprisingly interesting multi-faceted character development happening despite the paper-thin plot and, while this will probably never win any Emmys, the ride is great.

Touch Your Heart / Reach of Sincerity - Binged this because I wanted more LDW while waiting for more Tot9T to drop. A cookie-cutter rom-com but a cute and relaxing way to pass the evening. Had the distinct impression that both LDW and Yoo In-na have stronger acting muscles to flex than what this show allowed them, but it's solid for the genre. The FL's aeygo kind of drove me nuts at first, but the moments where she drops it were good, and I decided to believe that she uses it as a defense mechanism. Side gripe: really wish these rom-coms wouldn't infantilize grown people in relationships so much, but I understand that they have to walk a fine line in the romance department when it comes to mass consumption. Oh Jung-se was a treat, and in general the ensemble cast was solid.

About to pick up Search and The Spies Who Loved Me. Waiting to binge Private Lives and Start Up.

DO YOU LIKE BRAHMS? : Finale episode was fitting and appropriate. PJY's last recital piece (Schumann's Widmung) was so moving - perfect for wrapping up the whole story. I cried when Song-Ah said goodbye to her violin. In real life you wouldn't give up your instrument but for the drama it was fitting. It felt like she was saying goodbye to her dream, and moving forward with her new reality. I'm so glad each character dealt with their pain and found ways to pursue their own happiness.

VOICE (episode 12): the plot continues to move quickly although some scenes don't quite make sense, they get resolved too easily. I can't wait to finish this and move on to season 2.

LIVE (episode 6): I didn't think I would like this but it's actually good. As the show progresses, I feel more invested in the lives of the rookies and their mentors. Reminds me of Misaeng but set in a police patrol division instead of an office.

DO DO SOL SOL LA LA SOL: tried episode 1 but dropped it. couldn't stand fake piano playing after watching DYLB
