I was innocently enjoying Do You Like Brahms until the end of ep11, when something Song-ah said pulled me up short. She told Joon-young she didn’t know if she should be running errands for Prof Lee. I understand that her gentle soul prevents her from being snippy with her elders (and not necessarily her betters), but… how could she not know? That got me thinking that her cultivation of Prof Lee isn’t a million miles from what Oh Joo-seon, my favourite dodgy ex-judge from Forest of Secrets 2, is doing with Lee Yeon-jae. Ok, ok, I know I’m obsessed with FoS2, and our poor little Song-ah’s desire to play the violin isn’t anything like Oh Joo-seon’s plan to see his kids graduate from college then retire to some sunny island. And I’m certain that Song-ah will do the right thing later. But that was when I dropped the show. Maybe I’ll watch ep16 and work backwards from there. (PS It’s a complete coincidence that Song-ah’s dad and Oh Joo-seon are played by the same actor.)

I havent dropped Brahams. Its on an indefinite hold because...well...its boring. And even the mean people are mean in a tedious way and not in a delicious love to hate kind of way. I...paused it...because not even the promise of gentle romance and dimples could get me to press play.
Theres a legit difference between a slow, simmering, slow burn or a slice of romance and whatever Brahams is doing. Ill tell you this though, its excellent if youre in need of a nap.

It's kind of funny that much worse things happen to Ra-ra in LaLaSol, but the tone is much, much lighter. Like, oh someone dies? Oh, friendless and penniless? Well, tomorrow will be a better day and it will all work out somehow, don't worry! Whereas in Brahms, everything is deadly serious. I really like Brahms, but I do understand that all that deadly seriousness can be draining. If Ra-ra wandered into Brahms, she would be a tragic heroine instead of a comic-pathetic one. If Song-ah wandered into LaLaSol, she might take Joon-young for a moonlit bicycle ride, collapse on his couch, and catch him sneaking out of the shower half dressed. Now that would bring some Beanies back.

Definitively the heaviness of DYLB can be annoying. And the goofiness in Ddsslls sometimes feels unreal.
But anyway, we make a pact with the show and accept this fiction as a reality within the story.
We can only hope the writers well solve all issues for our leads, the best way possible.
If not... then we won't rewatch 😂😂😂😂

Two people remain in toxic environments and passively encourage each other to continue in them. Shouldn’t they be helping each other to escape unhealthy scenarios? Being agreeable and suppressing all of your feelings isn’t a solution. No one appreciates such a meek demeanor, it just makes walking all over you easier. Meh.

Start of October - changed few rules and a mother asks why don't you let things go. Letting things go is such an easy job to do. No struggle, no trouble, no suffering and all material benefits at your disposal. Easy and fun life. no no no. That's a shortcut, a temptation. you lose more than you get. its not fair give and take. Be stubburn and hold your ground. So I'm holding this ground for now and for immediate future. But there is a greed and good temptation. Hunger is increasing and you are aiming big. This creates desperation and you get into motion of wrong acts that turn all your efforts into a big zilch. The one who lose knows the value and taste of victory and despite so many setbacks and problems, despite all the exhaustion - I'm moving forward. No need to care about anything or anyone. Objectives matter most. This is what you can't get from fiction. You get this from real life. The real entertainment always flows in real world. Afterall, virtual identities are merely thoughts.

Hi Everyone! ..... Good to be back on the OT again! I hope all of you are doing well today, staying safe and healthy.
Can't believe it's the month of October already, but there you have it!
A question for the Beanies: Is there a free VPN that you are currently using (or have used before) and would recommend? I'm currently searching for one to watch a show from Europe but I'm unsure as to which VPN would work out the best. Thanks for your help dear Beanies!!
This week:
Record of Youth - You know, our main leads are both nice people and we're this far into the episodes, but something continues to feel a little off for me regarding their relationship. Park Bo-gum though, what can I say, he's just fantastic in his scenes.
Private Lives - Apparently everyone in this show is "filming a documentary." After that ending in episode 2, and that preview, things are bound to get interesting from here on in. ..... And the Uncle, boxer guy, I'm not getting "Uncle" vibes from him. Either he likes Joo-eun or he's involved in his own "documentary."
My Dangerous Wife - This wasn't on my radar but I came across it while watching the previous two shows! I saw that Choi Won-young was in it, who always plays interesting characters, so I decided to give it a try. ..... There's a wife with exacting standards but is now kidnapped, a mistress who refuses to be sidelined and a cheating husband who has allergic reactions to his wife's touch and is a suspect in his wife's disappearance because someone is out to frame him --- and this was just episode 1!
That's all for now. Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

I had not really planned on watching Dangerous Wife. Saw the Japanese one, and it was not that great (being the usual Japanese "let's not offend anyone anywhere about anything" type plot) - it was rather boring, so much so that I don't recall how it ended. Or maybe I never finished it, don't really recall.
But the Korean version seems to be a lot better so far.

Reputable VPNs have free plans with limits on servers, speeds and data. Some may not allow good streaming quality. Completely free VPNs can be dangerous with malware and spying. Another problem is not all paid VPNs are actually safe.
As far as I know, NordVPN, ProtonVPN and Windscribe are all reputable.

Agree. Although free meal from a nice halmoni is possible in drama, there is no such thing as free meal in the world of business. The 'free' VPN will capitalize on your usage somehow.
I'd suggest to signup on the mailing list of reputable vpn providers so you can get notify when they run promo.

Random things I liked this week:
18 Again giving me not one, not two, not three but four kick-ass female characters. Yup, loving teacher/gamer and 'haven't you got a roommate' cracked me up.
Private Lives trusting their story and female lead (Seohyun) enough that the male lead (Ko Kyung-pyo) doesn't actually appear in episode 1. At all. That's right, no random 'walk past', no super-coincidental fall or weird meeting for no reason whatsoever.
* Drama does make up for that with an ep 2 kiss*

One of the reasons I tend not to like legal procedural shows is that writers often get basic legal facts wrong which destroys the basic premise of the story line. Writers have a duty to know the basic legal foundation of the subject matter.
I have been enjoying Lies of Lies but in last week's episodes exposed a major legal flaw which undermines the main story. When the evil ex-mother in law shows up at the hospital to see her "granddaughter," it triggered a negative response.
In my research, I found that South Korea has had very strong parental rights laws. As a poor country, it was not unusual for parents to give their children to orphanages because they could not care for them. That act did not sever any parental rights or cause abandonment. Only a direct consent and court adjudication can terminate parental rights. Parental rights flow from the family registry tradition.
In Lies, the evil grandmother took custody of infant Woo Joo but ordered her immediately killed. This means she would not have registered the infant on her family (son's) registry because it would cause her legal issues of what happened to the child. In the alternative, since husband was deceased the law would put Woo Joo on Eun Soo's family registry, clearly vesting her parental rights. It would have been done because she was born in a state facility with a clear paper trail.
When Mr. Yoon brought the baby to the orphanage, he had no legal rights to give the child up for adoption. After WWII, many children were "adopted" but their biological parents returned to reclaim them. The courts have ruled in favor of the biological parents. (Only recently did SK amend its child welfare laws for state termination of parental rights in rare cases).
The priest destroyed the records at Yoon's request, but there would have been a court adoption file. If the adoption file did not have the required strict proof to terminate parental rights, Eun Soo is still Woo Joo's legal parent despite the adoption papers.
From what we saw, Eun Soo would not have given up her parental rights to her mother in law or to the state (even under the guise of her daughter being related to a murderer). She only gave custody to a family member. The grandmother did not want a legal paper trail because she wanted the child eliminated from existence. If that was not the case, a simple 20 second scene of Eun Soo signing away her rights would have closed this plot loophole. (Again, it is not up to the viewers to fill in basic story facts).
"I am here to see my granddaughter" line really set me off to the find the truth. In reality, it seems Eun Soo only had to come to Ji-Min's door and demand the return of her daughter (with a DNA test the adoption would be null and void).
The biggest lie in the story is the flawed legal premise.

Yes, I see your point, but the drama made it clear that Eun Soo decided not to claim her daughter because she doesn't want her to grow up as the child of a convicted murderer.

October 9, 2020 at 11:15 AM
That is what she said, but if she becomes the "step-mother" it is the same problem. Ji-Min should have already found out about her past (and being a curious reporter he would have done a background check on her prior to her being a teacher to his precious child).

I dug into this a bit, and it seems like in Korea parental and adoption rights are a total legal mess. Apparently it was very recent where the change was made where the head of the.. household/clan/whatever could just arbitrarily add or take off people from the family register.

Interesting article here on inheritance right for adoptees. Apparently in some cases Korean courts have ruled that adoptees, even in foreign lands, can inherit from their biological parents in Korea. https://askkorealaw.com/2020/01/06/adopted-child-inherit-biological-parent-korea/#more-3276

Writers often take liberties with facts to serve the story.
I used to try fact-checking historical dramas for my own "education" Learned much more varied stuff than from textbooks. Also seemed to contribute to better retention. Less so for legal dramas because they tend to be melodramatic.

Which is an odd statement. In the prison, Eun Soo never said she was giving up her child for adoption. Grandmother promised to raise the child. So what did she tell the press 10 years ago for the media to be so shocked? That her grandchild "died" in prison? (Again, there would be a legal paper trail).

When an idol is casted in drama, we often talk about their agency helping them to get the role.
But lastly, when I saw in the same drama actors from the same agency, it made curious about how the casting are really done.
Some examples :
The School Nurse Files : Jung Yoo Mi and Nam Joo Hyuk from Management SOOP
Start-Up : Suzy and Nam Joo Hyuk from Management SOOP
Do You Like Brahms? : Park Eun Bin and Par Ji Hyun from Namoo Actors
Missing the Other Side : Go Soo and Ahn So Hee from BH Entertainment
Stranger 1 + 2 : Lee Joon Hyuk, Lee Kyu Hyung , Yoon Se Ah, Yoo Jae Myung from ACE Factory

All agencies do 1-plus-1 deals with good reason, but for big agencies with a lot of actors (SidusHQ, KeyEast), it could just be coincidental to have multiple actors casted in the same drama.

I don't think they necessarly know each other before filming together. Actors don't really pass time in their agency. So I don't think it's about chemistry. After once, it could help like Gong Yoo and Jung Yumi who filmed 3 movies together.

Reminds me when Jang Ki Yong did a chemistry read with Park So Dam for Record of Youth, after that he dropped out of the show. I feel like if your a good actor then chemistry shouldn't be an issue, but sometimes for rom-coms/romance, they should do a chemistry test to test it out first. In Korea, I think once actors make it, you get offered roles and you take it. Sometimes its a good fit/other times its bad.

Yep. It's a package deal same with Hollywood agencies do. It's a 1+1 deal, you sign this actor, then you've to sign this actor from the same agency. I think that the stars who create their own agencies (Hyun Bin: Vast and Kang Ha Neul/Seo Kang Joon) are interesting b/c A) More power/choosing their own projects B) However if you aren't established, it might be an issue to get those roles.
Also KeyEast rn signed Ji Soo, but thing is, SM Brough KE a few yrs back/has stakes in it. Only Ju Ji Hoon remained, Park Seo Joon left after that merger. Why?: B/c that means the roles they would get would be given to a SM actor (A.K.A Idols).

Nam Joo Hyuk joined SOOP in April of this year, and was already cast in The School Nurse Files and Start-Up. The School Nurse Files already finished filming before he was with SOOP.
SOOP has a YouTube video with Jung Yoo Mi during a photoshoot for The School Nurse Files with Nam Joo Hyuk. SOOP's video footage focuses on Jung Yoo Mi, and in the IG description they have a sentence saying that it was before Nam Joo Hyuk joined SOOP.
SOOP has posted other photos from what I'm guessing is a more recent photoshoot, and both their photos have SOOP in the corner.

Its very much like Hollywood. CAA/UTA/WME. UTA is prob. #3 here in agency power, but b/c there's not many big film stars, it helps get their actor a role they want more than a bigger agency.
Also Hyena was produced with KeyEast (Ju Ji Hoon was the ML there). That is why agency power is so big because it is who you know that can help one lead a role. Thats why so many idol actors get a lead role off the bat due to their agency power/amongst other things.
I'm glad you brought this up because its something I been curious about in K-entertainment. Being apart of a respected/big agency opens doors, Park Sung Hoon got ITR b/c of the Justice team but also being apart of BH (Lee Byung Hyun's agency).

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!
Warrior friend came on social media to thank everyone for the many cards and other stuff. Dad resumed driving my goddaughter to school and back home again. I guess that leaves only me and my old friend unemployment for now. However, I am not sure about the nature of our current relationship….
I applied for different exam rounds to get hired by an important state department back in February. The pandemic delayed it all and made me forget about it, until they informed me that I had passed the exam round and was required to subscribe for participation in the next round as soon as possible. This would occur a few times, and suddenly it was time for that dreaded final interview in September.
Several times I got interrupted, rushed because the exam jury was running late, asked about the finest details of things that I could not answer,…in short, I bombed it. Serves me right for applying for the salary, the many benefits and the job security opportunities to become a permanent employee or even a civil servant in the long run, rather than applying out of actual interest in that specific department…
I passed. That. Interview!!! 🥳😮
Now hold the confetti, employment is not certain yet! Candidates who passed are ranked in order of results and receive job offers immediately or at a later date, if a suitable job offer becomes available. I am not getting my hopes up yet, but this is crazy. Like how on earth did I even charm them?😆 How did I survive the final countdown?😲😱 Not only was my total score adequate, the sub scores also ranged between adequate and good (take that employer from last week!)….Did I already mention that this is crazy?😱
So yeah, that proves that I am not the problem, but the solution remains a question mark. Halloween is very inspiring this year, but can I afford to lose myself in fiction right now? Will I not spiral out of control again if I do and stop caring about getting a job? Will I not get hired soon? At least the interview questions had clear answers.🤔

Hello all! I hope you’re all well.
I’ve fallen way behind on all k-drama recently, because my non-drama life has been unusually dramatic this week.
I did vote today though, so I’m feeling very accomplished, and thinking I might call it a week and just start my weekend early.
I just started “Do You Like Brahms,” and I’m hopeful I will have time to binge and enjoy it. Fingers crossed.

Gah, voting - you're ahead of me there. My ballot arrived by mail, and I'm planning to go over the whole thing tomorrow. Some races are obvious (*cof*), but we have some local referendums (referendi? referenda?) that are confusing. Cue study montage... Kdrama style, I'll probably end up with a nosebleed by the end. But I'll have earned my Reply 1988 binge!

Ha! Earned binge watches are the best! Nothing like guilt-free guilty pleasures, lol.
We had a couple of ballot propositions in our district that did require some research on my part, but I’ve had my mind made up on the rest for months now.
Our state makes it really easy to vote by mail and to do it early, so I filled out my ballot almost as soon as I got it.

Hello Beanies - happy Friday to everyone around the world!!!
This week has been a tough one in so many ways, but I'm hanging in there and still waiting to hear what my start date for this job is going to be - and now what consulting company I'll be working for. Talk about uncertain and a LOT annoying...
Oh and on top of it all I got a letter in the mail yesterday that my unemployment has run out after 6 months. I applied for an extension but then woke up in the middle of the night worrying about it.
On the other side though, being unemployed during a pandemic has some good sides to it.
1. Last week I happened to watch the little hummingbird who sits on my front deck to 'manage' the feeder suddenly fly into the tree off the deck, find some leaves that were full of dew and take a bath!!! Talk about a wonderful thing to see!!!
2. This week I've had a little wren come to my back porch in the morning when I'm outside with my coffee and laptop. Both times he sat on the top of the chair - facing me - and sings to me!!! What a beautiful gift that is.
So I've decided that in all the chaos, uncertainty, ugliness, sadness, fear and despair in our world, I'm going to continue to look for those moments of joy and blessings to focus on.
I hope the rest of you beanies can keep beaning on and will also let yourself experience those moments of joy that keep happening.
be safe - wear your mask - and VOTE!!!
Oh, and thank you universe for that wonderful little fly in the VP's hair Wednesday night. That was the BEST!

and that FLY was almost the best 2 minute 3 second contribution (very considerate fly, keeping to the time limit) to that VP debate wednesday night! personally, i think it was a russian spy drone on assignment....

Dogs are the BEST. Animals in general, really! So sorry you're having a crap time, but glad you're finding solace in nature.
I went for a long walk today for similar reasons, and saw the sweetest little wren, who flitted back and forth for a bit watching me back. I was so enchanted I followed that up by walking straight into a tree.... I had to laugh, it was classic!

I've been entertained by a neighborhood cat that makes the rounds several times a day. Once it discovered me, it walked up to the front window, stood up on it's back legs, bugged out it's eyes (they were HUGE) and stared at me from about 3 feet away. I think I was dismissed as uninteresting after a few minutes since the cat then turned and slowly walked across the porch and down the sidewalk.

Looking back over the year in dramas my appreciation grows for the fluffy charming 'Meow the Secret Boy' (also known as 'Welcome'). The female lead from MTSB is in a new series now, which served to remind me of her previous work. So many dramas this year were actively BAD. We need to appreciate those that didn't reach that threshold. Not being BAD has become a high achievement.

I decided to learn korean language this year, I had to put on hold for a bit, but classes started in August. I could study alone, but I just want to go to class, have people around (not too close, and yes we have to wear masks during class - pronunciation is gong down the hill), have a teacher. Have the commitment of being there.
Last week, there was a new teacher. We went through the basics, what is your name, where are you from and why do you want to learn korean. But what she said kinda upset me. When asked why I wanted to learn korean, I said "I would like to watch the shows I enjoy without the subtitles", which is basically the main reason for it.
Well.. the teacher said: "Ah, all you need to learn is one word: 괜찮아요/kenchanayo, nothing else."
That was a bit uncomfortable to me. When I watch the show, I am not just watching for my favourite actor or actress, I am watching for the culture, the food, the towns and cities, etc. When learning about orders and restaurants, I wasnt just thinking about the Lets Eat series, but about the delicious food I could order some day (I dont know when) and enjoy it. Yes, I would love to experience what some of my favourite characters had.
Since her comment, I havent had the will power to watch anything. I was super excited with the new dramas coming out this week, but now it just feel so bleh. No motivation for the last episode of SF8. Not even Lee Yi Kyung repeating "괜찮아" with Rebecca is funny anymore.

Oh no, she deflated you with a comment she probably thought was “cute”. I hate when that happens. Although I used to say the most important word I learned from kdrama was 가지마 (kajima!) “don’t go/don’t leave me” 😁
Maybe ask her a question or two about specific foods or culture that you’re curious about, if you think she’s not taking you seriously. Good luck learning Korean and btw, it’s Hangeul Day today!

That is a bad teacher.
After I visited Korea in 2018, I decided I wanted to go back but with some basic language skills so I can converse with people I would meet. I started off with audio courses. Then I did some textbook lesson. Then this year I went back to my old audio courses which helped my comprehension. Retention of knowledge is the hard part.

I know how influential a teacher is in classroom. I once started French and Chinese but I wasn’t very motivated by the teachers so I dropped them. On the other hand, I’ve had a fair share of great English teachers so I learned to love th slang I age early on. I also had good German lessons so I’ve liked the language ever since (though I think I forgot most of them because I haven’t used it for so long.)
Perhaps you should find another place to learn? Or some good online lessons. Learning should be fun and motivating.

i'm sorry that you had a teacher say that, it's like she was making fun of you. i've had i guess similar experiences? i used to talk a lot about dramas with my friend group (at the time) in feb/march but they would make fun of me for watching shows or if i'd write something in hangul they'd call me a koreaboo or ask if i thought i was korean, which made me feel really bad abt what i liked
first, i have distanced myself from those people bc they're just close minded and don't get it. and second, it would be AMAZING to live in korea, but i know that i am not korean, i just find the culture and language FASCINATING, mostly because there's so much i don't know about it. and if someone doesn't understand that, you can try explaining it to them but if they still don't get it, don't waste your time on the teacher. and NEVER, ever feel bad about liking something-- life is too short to feel embarrassed abt what you like.

Oh, so frustrating! I hope you can get your sweet revenge by thoroughly enjoying your dramas again.
Drama has gotten me started learning Korean too, and it's so fascinating. It honestly has been kind of a lifesaver to have something to get really interested in during these weird and difficult times. I've been using Duolingo mostly, and then supplementing by dipping into a free Coursera class online. I adore the Coursera professor, and that is so motivating. I'll work hard for you, Professor Kang! But it would be so hard *not* to have that, but to have the opposite :(
Now I'm gonna run around sarcastically saying "kenchanayoooooo" and laughing like a madwoman, in your hono(u)r. Sending good vibes your way! Fighting!

Duolingo is the worst at the very beginning. Once you get past the first few lessons, out of the alphabet and past the weird corporate loanwords (Seutabukseu! Baeseukin Robinseu!) into actual Korean, it gets muuuuch better! Their teaching method just isn't well suited when you're learning a whole new alphabet before you can get into the meat of things.

I sorta get why he did. He was the IT boy in WWWS/SITR/OSN, but after dismal ratings for APOYM (So many abbreviation titles lol). I think he wants to get away from those sweet nice roles, and into a bit darker territory?
His Netflix drama also has him as a solider, so I'm curious to see how he'll pull it off. Altho his leading ladies have all been very solid, so him/Ji Soo (Main couple), better bring it. The writer wrote Bridal Mask/Sky Castle, so I've faith in her abilities. The North Korean solider played by him is sensitive territory, so we shall see...

I'm in the mood for a good old-fashioned makjang, the soapier the better, doesn't have to have high ratings or good fan reviews. You know, like Five Fingers, Baker King, Innocent Man, Mask, for instance. Has to be at least 20 episodes.
Any suggestions? And please, nothing by that famous screenwriter who did DOTS - that was way too cheesy.

Lie After Lie has a makjang story and has been really fun and compelling to me so far. It's about 10 episodes in (12 after tomorrow) and I am loving it. It's got a lot of great makjang tropes - birth secrets(ish), eeeeeevil mother-in-law, revenge, and of course a lot of coincidences. And murder, because what makjang doesn't have at least one good murder?

This is the fear. So many kitchen appliances have gone that route and been purged in various moves, and then some of them I decide later I miss. Alas, rice cooker, maybe we'll meet again in another life. Bread maker... not so much.
I'm also worried it'll be a pain to clean. Doing dishes is the bane of all my culinary endeavors.

@midnightramyeon ah bread makers, they seem like such a good idea....mine is lurking on top of the cupboard gathering dust. I think I should just avoid single purpose appliances.
