Kwon Sang-woo, Bae Sung-woo fight corruption in Fly From Rags to Riches
by tineybeanie
In the upcoming underdog drama Fly From Rags to Riches, a problematic duo will stand up against an unjust world. The recently released teaser hints at the comedic potential between Kwon Sang-woo (Mystery Queen 2) and Bae Sung-woo (Live), and I’m all for it.
They’re teaming up to help uncover the injustices perpetuated by an unfair legal system and help free the common man’s voice. Kwon Sang-woo plays a penniless lawyer who passed the bar with only a high school diploma, and Bae Sung-woo plays a survivalist journalist who moves hearts with his words.
The teaser begins with Kwon Sang-woo inviting Bae Sung-woo to work with him: “Let’s work together.” With a forceful chest bump, he emphasizes, “You can trust me.” Without a second of hesitation, Bae Sung-woo quickly agrees to the partnership: “Okay, I believe you.” But as time goes on, he begins to see that half of Kwon Sang-woo’s words were empty talk, while Kwon Sang-woo keeps his enthusiasm, saying that they’re on the same boat.
Bae Sung-woo’s “every man for himself” mentality prompts him to ask Kwon Sang-woo why he keeps nosily interfering and trying to help everyone’s business, as Kwon Sang-woo passes out re-trial protest posters. Bae Sung-woo says the people should learn to be self-reliant, and Kwon Sang-woo fires back: “How can they be independent when even I, who passed the bar, can’t be self-reliant?”
As he walks down the street, Bae Sung-woo talks to himself about how he’s so annoyed, but spotting a potential informant, he turns on his most charming smile. Copy flashes showing, “People who want to hide the truth vs. People who want to save justice.” Kwon Sang-woo is all about directness; body moving before the mind. He engages Bae Sung-woo so they can catch the real criminal. He knows that a related party has transferred over a tape recording. Bae Sung-woo tells Kwon Sang-woo that he lost the tape, to which Kwon Sang-woo spits out his snack with an “Are-you-kidding-me?” face.
If I could gather the perfect cast of powerful bad guys, it would be these men: ambitious Mayor Kim Eung-soo (Old School Intern), ace prosecutor Jung Woong-in (9.9 Billion Won Woman), and shady former Prosecutor General Kim Gab-soo (Hospital Playlist). In the teaser, they laugh together, probably celebrating a nefarious success.
Kim Eung-soo seems happy to provide a re-trial, get the truth, and wrap up the situation. Kim Gab-soo nods nearby. However, Bae Sung-woo and Kwon Sang-woo seemed riled up and determined to win at all costs. Bae Sung-woo makes a ninety-degree bow to Kim Eung-soo, while Kwon Sang-woo’s narration plays, “We have our pride. We just don’t have money.”
In their office, Kwon Sang-woo and Bae Sung-woo feed off of each other’s righteously angry energy. Bae Sung-woo asks, “Why do you think so?” Kwon Sang-woo shouts, “These guys!” and Bae Sung-woo raises his hand, “That’s why…”
The last scene shows the comedic duo enjoying some lunch. Kwon Sang-woo marvels at himself, “Damn, I’m amazing.” Bae Sung-woo sincerely asks, “Really, you? You don’t mean me? Because you’re a lawyer?”
Friday-Saturday SBS drama Fly From Rags to Riches, directed by Kwak Jung-hwan (Chief of Staff, Miss Hammurabi) and written by Park Sang-kyu, will begin airing on October 30.

The fact that this drama also has Kim Joo-Hyun but there is not a single mention of her in this trailer/teaser or this article is really not fair.

I'm so happy to see my fave Korean actor, Kwon Sang Woo, in another drama again. I miss seeing the veteran actors/actresses (better acting and more natural, non-plastic surgery face). Can't wait to see KSW!
