Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

stroopwafel

Sixth Sense: So much chaos! I’ll watch pretty much anything with Yoo Jae-suk in it, and I was intrigued to see that his latest variety has an all-female cast. While I’m enjoying getting two times my usual dose of Jeon So-min, as well as the sisterhood and banter (plus Yoo Jae-suk getting frazzled by his new, wild castmates), I’m not sure if I can handle Jessi in full doses yet.

Currently weecapping: Do You Like Brahms

Record of Youth: I’m having quite a conflicted response to this drama. On one hand, I found the premiere week clunky and uninspiring, and feel like everything about this drama could be one step better/stronger. I’m not sure why, but I’m having trouble seeing this as anything but A Drama. On the other hand, PUPPIES! I really like the cast, love a crushed puppy underdog hero, and its high saturation and colors make it pretty to watch. (Completely tangential aside: It’s a weird bit of meta that Byun Woo-seok is acting out his exact career path of model turned actor. It wasn’t too long ago that he was an up-and-coming YG KPlus model alongside Nam Joo-hyuk and Jang Ki-yong. Oh the memories!)

Do You Like Brahms: Shhhh, I’m technically not supposed to talk about this show since I’m covering it, but I just needed to sneak in a very loud (and totally secret) shout out, and a little extra space to SQUEE!

When I Was the Most Beautiful: So much dramaaaaaa! Things are getting a little out of control in the melo department, but I’m still watching — and enjoying. Sure, sometimes it’s with a giggle, but I like the construct and the characters enough to shoulder the melo. I struggled a little with the “disappearance” of Jin and our first three-year time lapse, which was basically the last thing I was expecting from Jin and Ye-ji’s marriage, so I kind of feel like my brain was trying to reconcile it the whole time I was watching. Then there was the second three-year lapse (we’re finally in 2020 lol), and a whole new layer of melo. It’s not easy to pull off two three-year time jumps in a single drama week, but I think they did fairly well here. And the transformation of Hwan was pretty epic (*heart eyes*). I’m expecting the second half of this drama to be a giant sweeping mess of love, hate, crying, and reinvigorated triangles. Also, I didn’t realize I was going to be treated to yet another fantastic performance by Kim Mi-kyung in this drama, so hooray for that! ♥

Currently Recapping: Forest of Secrets 2

Answer Me 1988: SO GOOD. I’m so glad I waited until I was in the right mood to fully appreciate this gem before watching because I have thoroughly enjoyed immersing myself in this lovely neighborhood for the past few weeks. It’s such a warm, cozy show with just the right amount of nostalgia and tons of heart. This one definitely makes my favorite dramas list and is one I can see myself re-watching down the road. Those episode lengths are epic, though.

Do You Like Brahms: I did not expect to be as into this as I am. I went into it for the music aspect, but I stayed for the contemplative, subdued atmosphere and the surprisingly nuanced characters. Song-ah and Joon-young’s relationship is so refreshingly simple and honest – they’re just two nice people who connect and enjoy each other’s company. Joon-young is killing me with how adorably gung-ho he is about being friends with Song-ah. The only complaint I have so far is that I hate Jung-kyung. Like a lot. On a side note, I love that the leads are actually playing their instruments.

Alice: It’s fun so far, and it is nice to see Joo-won back on screen. I’m not super invested, but as long as they keep the policing to a minimum, I’ll probably enjoy it. Because I am seriously over everyone and their mother being police officers in dramaland. Can we please get some occupation diversity up in here?

Flower of Evil: Eh. I’m not a fan of this whole over-the-cop accomplice angle, and I’ve been really frustrated with the writing of Hyun-soo’s character of late. I’d hoped the drama would go a bit edgier with his character and leave him as a straight-up anti-hero, but they’ve been softening him. His sudden development of emotional range feels so inconsistent and illogical. And now we’ve got this abrupt about-face, so I have no idea what they’re trying to do with his character.

Currently recapping: Alice

Record of Youth: Like a crisp autumn day, this feels fresh, breezy, and comfortable to watch. It’s just the type of rom-com I needed! Jung-ha is spunky and relatable, while you just can’t help but root for Hye-joon. I hope that the bromance between Hye-joon and his BFF Hae-hyo is strong enough to withstand the inevitable reveal behind Hae-hyo’s popularity and success. It would be such a shame otherwise.

My Unfamiliar Family: Still enjoying this! Relationships between people are often difficult and messy. I love that this show doesn’t shy away from difficult topics and shows how different people process feelings of hurt. Also, we must protect 22-year-old Dad! He’s so precious.

Finally watched I Hear Your Voice. It was good, but not as good as I thought it was going to be. I also recently rewatched Pinocchio, and I thought it was much better. Now I'm ready for Start Up.

Of the currently airing shows my very favorite is DO YOU LIKE BRAHMS? This has it all: good writing, good acting, good direction and great cinematography. Quirkycase is not alone in hating Jung-kyung, but that is just another indication that even the side characters are being portrayed well. This show is beautiful, deep and nuanced.

This weekend will be the finale of ONCE AGAIN which has been a good weekender. I will miss it.

My son found out that my wife had never seen TWIN PEAKS, which is available on NETFLIX. Not something I like but something to watch while I am working. But for something lighter to break things up she has also been watching CLEAN WITH PASSION FOR NOW.

My wife has also discovered the new period costume C-drama MAIDEN HOLMES. She loves it.

Some of the shows I was looking forward to have been delayed, so I got around to watching YOU DRIVE ME CRAZY. As promised, it was good.

Most of the J-dramas I have started recently have seemed flat so I decided to re-watch the classic HANNA YORI DANGO. This time around I realized just how well directed this show is- everything was so well put together.

From what I have seen it has excellent cinematography as well as swoony prince and really smart FL. It is set in the century that followed SONG OF GLORY so it is definitely an interesting time period.

I tried out Record of Youth, but I cringed for about 15 minutes and then had to stop. I think I made it/fast forwarded to the scene where the FL does Park Bo Gum's make-up and despite all the beauty on screen I was deeply bored. Not a good sign.

Flower of Evil - Still watching but somehow it has turned into a makjang-melodrama-fusion, not exactly my cup of tea.

Stranger 2 - Just watched the new episode, I like it. A lot more investigating that I can follow, instead of all the corporate shenanigans that went over my head and short attention span at the moment.

What I want to watch:

Perhaps try out more of Brahms, I am not too sure yet. The first episodes where a bit too depressing for me. And not enough actual "music making" for my taste. Does that change?

Zombie Detective - Only 9 more days to go!

The School Nurse Files - Bring on the jelly ghosts, I am ready!

Tale of the Nine Tailed - Somehow I am getting a bit of a "True Blood" - vibe from the promotional articles they are releasing at the moment. Colour me bloody-intrigued.

It seems like I am in the mood for some supernatural dramas!

Alive (movie) - it came out on Neflix, out of nowhere or maybe I missed they saying that this movie would come out. Its.... not my style. Regardless, the first half of the movie is pretty much Yoo Ah In alone, not a lot of talking, just him, acting. It is pretty amazing, I have to say. Even if the movie was not my taste, just the fact he had do all those things, I am impressed. (also, I will be useless in those situations, I am not even gonna try to run to save myself). Park Shin Hye was bad ass too.

Do you like Brahms? - I am in love with this drama. The awkwardness, the silence, the warm of it. It is my "When the weather is fine" of the second half of the year.

Record of Youth - I watched 38 minutes, then dropped. I am gonna wait to binge it. The cast is great, the director is great, but I just... cant connect to them at all. I was bored out of my mind and no amount of Park Bo Gum puppy eyes could entertain me.

Alice - The story got a bit crazy on episode 4, I am gonna have to re-watch it, because I am a bit confused about Choi Won-Young character. I cant wait for father/son find out about each other. I could survive without the funny/comedy parts.

Hello my Twenties - Finally finished and I liked it. I am gonna wait a bit to see the second season.

Misaeng - Wow. Like wow. I dont know how to describe it. Ah, I was intern once. It was not like that, but I can relate so much to it.

It will have to get raving reviews in order for me to consider binging it later.

Switch: Finished! A super fun drama. JGS did great as a prosecutor and as a conman. And it's so awesome to see the good guys and the bad guys be equally brilliant. They just kept one upping each other through the entire thing.

Moment of 18: Finished! I wished all the drama in the last episode was better spread out to the other episodes. It felt a little incomplete. But, overall, a great watch with an OTP more mature than many an adult one.

Let's Eat Something, Anna: what a horrible show. It was a super short webseries where each episode felt more like a preview to a longer show than a complete episode. The worst scene was when the FL falsely reports the ML for sexual assault and to make matters worse the female cop that comes just says he's too handsome to assault anyone...just wow. It didn't get any better after that but it was only 5 15 min eps so finished it anyway.

Yeah, Let's Eat, Anna was pretty bad. It aired in 2017, but had dumb dated worldviews from 20 years ago. Even allowing for that, I was most puzzled by how poorly the writer used the 75 minutes. There was only like 10 minutes at most of any real content.

I liked, "Let's Eat, Anna," but then I like short dramas. Really it sort of reminded me of a very short, "Castaway on the Moon." Two flawed characters that managed to help each other overcome their phobias.

I don't have much experience with web series just because I don't tend to run into them. But, with the shortened time, I think it could have read like a movie; they just didn't utilize the time well.

I do generally like the idea of 2 flawed people helping each other heal. Here though it was that they just magically clicked and that solved all their problems. I did really like how the pretty host helped postivily motivate the ML into changing but I was saddened that they used that to be an emotional scar cause he assumed she was crushing on him when she wasn't.

DO YOU LIKE BRAHMS?
After applying my 4-episode rule, this one is a keeper, mainly because of the leads and romantic, contemplative mood. There are a few niggling doubts, namely if it will go down the melo route thanks to the love triangles, and that I wish there was more music-making. Several times when we are about to hear a piece, a phone rings, someone interrupts, or a string breaks. I think I will have to readjust my expectations: maybe it's not a musical drama, but a drama about musicians, with music as a constant theme (Does this make sense?) The actors are playing the instruments too, so it's not reasonable to expect them to play at length and sound professional.

MARY STAYED OUT ALL NIGHT. Now on Episode 11. I need this to be over soon @ndlessjoie. I also happened to binge half of FULL HOUSE TAKE 2. It's an easy rewatch and one of my favourite rom-coms, even though they sing the same song for like the whole drama. 😂 (At least the lyrics aren't "My Precious").

Thank you @oldawyer! I was despairing that anyone knew about it.

I couldn’t stand the Rain drama and barely finished it. There is no similarity or connection between the dramas, so you can watch FHT2 with no worries at all @mmmmm 😊 The title is a word play on the heroine’s name “Jang Man-ok”, which means “Full House” in Hanja characters.

And why I like it, hmm, well it has most of the classic rom-com tropes and never drags (except a few episodes towards the end which I can FF). It was a bit strange back in 2012 to have 30-minute episodes, and I think that makes it a more addicting watch than other dramas. I’m also weak for Park Ki-wooing looking like an adorable blonde duckling. And No Min-Woo with the most fabulous disastrous idol hair I’ve seen.

FLOWER OF EVIL: I really like this (and I had so much fun with some of the episodes!), but I’ve spoiled myself a little so my enjoyment has wanted slightly. I’m going to try to catch up on the rest this weekend, so hopefully I’ll be able to participate in the recaps by the final! (ep. 3-8)

SF8: BLINK: This one had potential but fell a little flat. I think this is honestly due to the length. I think it would’ve been longer, because the idea of an AI in your head is pretty interesting, especially when you don’t want it there. It ended on a happy note, which surprised. I think I would’ve preferred a more bitter-sweet ending for this one. (ep. 4)

Forest of Secrets S2 We see that the cases are starting to intersect. We see additional reasons why we should suspect certain individuals. But it looks more interconnected and complicated than expected. I just hope our favorite weasel will be found alive.

Record of Youth i find the mood of the drama pretty chill although the subjects it tackle are heavy. Maybe its because its the premier week. I love the friendships and how the main leads met up. I can see the issues they will deal later on and looking forward to Hye Jun and Jeung Ah's success stories.

Flower of Evil One plot hole, I wonder why Hee Seong waited until he got home to bury Hyun Soo. If that has been his plan all along, he couldve gotten rid of the body anywhere along the way. 🤷‍♀️ Unless Hee Seong was dependent on his father's decision doesn't sound right though.

The best way to resolve this is for real Baek Hee Seong to die and so Do Hyun Soo can now take over his real identity. And I think that is where the story is headed. I hope.

Sort of watching 5 or 6 shows, but all but Lies of Lies, Missing, and Secret Forest are my only "can't wait" ones. Flower of Evil has kind of gone flat for me, Brahms is one I kind of like but just cannot get into much.

Oh yeah, and about once a week will fast forward through most that "My Wonderful Life" makjang melo just to see how weird things can get. Pretty weird - so far the chairman seems to have offspring all over, and none of them know about it. Meanwhile, all those living with him are not his kids (the old switched at birth trope). It's basically a horrible show, but I can't help FF''ing episodes just to see how insane it can get.

King2hearts - such a fun but more stressful than expected watch. I love a heroine who can help herself (and those around her). We’ve got two episodes left which means the one thing I knew about this show going in is about to happen 😢 I haven’t warned my sister, who is very invested in princess/guard romance, so I predict tears.

Six Flying Dragons - Only five episodes in so I still feel like I’m in a settling phase and working out who is who, but am really enjoying this so far. I can’t shake the Game of Thrones feeling but I think that’s because I don’t watch many historical political dramas so that’s as close as I get. (And things like the planted trees to represent people to take revenge on is very much like Arya’s list of names).

I don’t have too much drama time at the moment so I’m holding off picking up anything new for now....but next stop on the Lee Seung Gi watch list will be Gu Family Book, will I be brave enough to finish it this time? 😄

Forest of Secrets is the only show I'm watching and I can't gush enough about how much I love this season. The writing, directing, editing, music and acting are all at the top of their game. I think this show is and remains the best Korean drama. I love the way the writers used a literal fog to convey a sense of confusion and directionlessness and then expertly put both their characters and their audience into that figurative fog. It's masterful.

I wasn't interested in picking up anything else - Slump Land - but quietly monitoring Alice to see how Korea is pulling off the time travel. I wasn't interested at all in Do You Like Brahms but if it has orgies and cuckolding then maybe it isn't the drama I thought it was going to be?? I should check it out.

I'm dipping into Alice here and there, and though I think it's rather clumsy and tropey as a whole, it does seem to have some interesting ideas. What drew me in was that woman who killed her past self, a subplot that I hope they will develop or draw upon for the main plot.

As for Brahms: I'm afraid someone was just flinging the word "cuckold" around without fully understanding it. So far there is no cheating in the show at all, let alone adultery, since the two leads hadn't even declared themselves to the objects of their respective affections.

Do you like Brahms?

I am sooooooo in love with this show.😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
The acting is wonderful. The music is amazing. 😄
The story, so far, is really touching.

That even secondary characters make me cry, that I can just feel the emotions of our leads and their friends just by watching them, and let me tell you, most of them don't talk much, so we just have their body language and yes... it can connect us so badly, this is an amazing well acted story, and it is breaking my heart already.
That I can cry so longingly on ep. 3, I kind of feel predicting this is the best drama in 2020.

So, if you like classical music, art, poetry and if you can at times understand the language of the soul. You cannot miss this show.

It is very beautiful. 😍😍😍😍😍

Not Korean:

Go ahead (C-drama)
I just finished this week this show and I am missing them like crazy.
I love the dynamic of the family they built for themselves. I like the friendships and the family values that the show gives you; except maybe for certain crazy and antagonist parents who didn't know what was their place, corresponded with the way they acted before.

I found most of this drama very realistic. It made me cry and laugh very genuinely.
I will have to download it because it deserves a rewatch. 👍

It took me seven days to watch the final episode of Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, after watching ep. 15. It just felt it had ended logically there. But no, they had to go and do a marriage ep. Which was all kinds of cute and all - but what about his family? Evil brother who was one of the villains in the first half never showed up again, or got remorseful, or something? His manipulating dad just poofed and went away?

And the serial kidnapper was caught and that was it? With some extra drama seconds spared for the victims of which at least one was in a mental hospital?

I am kind of disappointed. I liked it pretty well up to the halfway point and then it started unravelling. I appreciate the cuteness... but I expected a bit more. Too bad.

Other than that, this week was hell because of work, and I'm getting eyestrain from too much screen-watching so I kind of avoided it whenever I could. So no new dramas. Also getting burnout syndrome. Life sucks atm.

I do plan on starting c-drama Love and Redemption because it finally ended, and by the time I get there, it'll probably be completely translated.

Maybe.

Strong woman DBS had its nice moments. The OTP was great and there were parts of the humor that really made me laugh at the time. But yes, the plot was a mess, it was not coherent not cohesive and they really missed wonderful opportunities with better characters at the end of the show, like, how great would have been to give the grandmother the role of the nanny, instead of trying with the gangsters.
The plot with the kidnapper took too much time and didn't match with the overall tone of the show.
The arc with brother and Ji soo' character's ex girlfriend was so bland and useless...
And the list goes on and on.
It could have been a great show, but...

At least we had a great OTP.

the final two episodes of BECAUSE THIS IS OUR FIRST LIFE are the only flaw in an otherwise fabulous show. In fact the writers made a mistake in giving us two little of the side couples and simply lost the plot on the central couple and just jammed in the most idiotic separation ever seen in a drama just to fill the show out to 16 episodes.

[Realized my comment was ripe with FoE spoilers, so I'm just deleting and reposting a redacted version. Sorry 😅]
So, this week I finished Into the Ring. Couldn't be bothered to watch ep 13 of Flower of Evil because ep 12 annoyed me endlessly. I'll probably come back next week, but right now I'm having silly thriller backlash (not long ago I dropped Train on ep 10 because of the same reason - I hate it when characters just turn stupid and villains get all unhinged and villainy out of the blue).

With the kids at school and unexpectedly without work, I had so much time that I really wanted to watch something, but Netflix in my region is holding back Forest of Secrets 2 and Record of Youth until they finish airing, so I ended up watching Because this is my first life. My assessment: beautiful cat, cute OTP, cute support OTP1, awful support OTP2 (I hated hated hated that they didn't learn anything from all that pain). Liked it until ep 14. And then... I just got mad at the FL for the psycho move she pulled. I get what was the point, but, girl, no.
So... Out of 3 dramas, 2 made me feel like punching the screen. Not good.
Then I got accidentally addicted to I-land. I jumped directly to the second stage of the survival and wow, it's a show designed by an evil mind, but so compelling. Those kids are really giving their all (and if one of my kids ever asks me to get into a talent show I'll probably just lock them at home until they turn 20)

I was scrambling around trying to find something to watch. I watched the first two episodes of, "Record of Youth," but it didn't grab me. So I started watching, "Stranger," and thought I'd better go back and rewatch, "Secret Forest," before continuing. BINGO! That did it. I'd forgotten how this drama hooked me from the first scene--and kept me hooked. Now that's my kind of drama.

I love the love that Brahms is getting on db. I thought I was the only one who just fell head over heels in love with this drama but I am happy to be among fellows who are just as in love with our Song-ah and Joon-young.

The other show I'm watching is Records of Youth. I went in with lots of hope and the premier week us just, uh average. I'm still going to stick around but I just am not into it atm.

And I've just been rewatching While You Were Sleeping. Missed our trio and seeing them made me happy.

I’m still down in the Thai BL hole 🕳 if anyone cares to try to find me....

Even worse, I’m still down the “Until We Meet Again” hole, which is a
hole WITHIN the Thai BL hole, that @jiayou and @sirena introduced me to, but said @sirena seems to have moved onto other things (I’m talking about you just finishing “The Gifted 😉😉).

Now, in order to try to get me out of this “Until We Meet Again” hole-within-a-hole, I’m going to attempt to watch “SOTUS: The Series”, because for my first attempt at trying to get out of the hole-within-a-hole, I tried to watch “2gether: The Series”, because everyone keeps raving about it, but I personally, just couldn’t get into it 🤔🤔🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

For the last year, I've been re-watching snippets of "The Untamed" 😅😅

But I don't dare to do a re-watch of the entire drama--or even a first watch of the Special Edition-- for fear that I'm going to get sucked back down THAT rabbit hole again haha

I am sooo jealous of everyone who has access to Do You Like Brahms and Alice (flailing around and kicking). I've never gotten over Secret Affair and still skim through it (for the music and everything else too.)

Watching Flower of Evil: not at all disappointed, I found the episode, when the leads fess up, one of the most moving and beautiful moments in kdrama. Subsequently, I've been kinda expecting what happened to happen in some form or other; otherwise, why would we have such an accomplished actor who can turn on a dime in the lead who has created a complex unpredictable character.

And to that end, I'm also slowly progressing through Iljimae and wanting to see some more smart action from LJG.

Just finished When the Devil Calls Your Name and am totally sold, once again, on Jung Kyung-ho and Park Sung-woong. I sped through this because I couldn't help myself, I had to know what would happen. Who would believe that I would feel vibes from Paradise Lost?

I'm obsessed with Forest of Secrets. I'm not sure if I can even make it to the next episode. The tension has been ratcheted up.

I've been struggling from episode 12 of Lie to Me. I enjoy Yoon Eun-hye. I thought she was great in Coffee Prince. I'll never forget her taking the rubbish out in high heels, and I never once could see her as a boy. I then became aware of Kang Ji-hwan's issues and that made me sad too. But apart from that I made the mistake of reading the weecaps and the comments as I completed each episode, and I shouldn't have. The premise is shaky and the brothers' synchronicity bears psychoanalysis, and I do feel sorry for the girl who misses out even though she is turning into another spiteful, passive aggressive cliche.

To compensate myself for missing out on Brahms and Alice, I've started to once again skim through My Mister to catch the interactions between Lee Sun-kyun and Lee Ji-eun which will forever stay with me.

Ha, "melo purgatory". Well, I guess I won't know for a while. Hopefully Do You Like Brahms? will show up sometime on my horizon, but after I watched two episodes of Mr Mister last night, I spent ages wondering what it is about it that I love so much - what gives it that good feeling? I love the relationship between the two leads, as it slowly develops, and of course one standout moment is when she hears him say, "someone gets me..." A charged moment, and this is after she's tried to seduce him and he's firmly put her in her place.

I also loved that in listening in to him, she even hears his breathing, almost his heartbeat. Hearing that becomes a comfort to her in her bleak life. He becomes a lifeline, and she is more and more bound to him.

Lee Sung-kyun is superb. Who wouldn't want to be? Apparently the director kept telling him to flatten his character (not his words, mine), so he is really not acting, and his utter decency comes through. I overlooked him as an actor when I saw Parasite, but now I want to go back and rewatch it just for him.

I love how the drama shows what he "knows" but does not want to face, and how when he can't avoid it, he breaks down at the end. Rich, complex, emotional stuff. But you're right, it's no melodrama, it's down to earth, and it explores emotions without being resorting to gut-raking sentimentality.

My Mister is one of those sentimental masterpieces that comes every few yrs/decade. What a transcendent show. The main leads relationship is one of the most beautiful and human relationships I have ever seen in a show ever. Wonder what work the screenwriter will conjure up next!!

Reply 1988 - wrapped that up this week, and my heart squeezed so bad leaving this wonderful street behind! This show did an amazing job of reminding me of how fleeting things can be in life, and how wonderful daily life can be if we only just realized it in the moment. Also: I am Team Jung-hwan 4 Life.

Do You Like Brahms? - I'm on this ship and sailing happily along with a very large number of my fellow Beanies as the comments here and on the weepcaps clearly indicate. It's gooey delicious and warm and cozy, and the Moonlight-Sonata-into-Happy-Birthday took my breath away. My god, JY, you are the man.

Melo Is My Nature - I've made it about 4.5 episodes in, but I can't really seem to get into it. I also find myself fast-forwarding pretty much through all of Jin-ju's scenes. She just annoys me so much, her 'problems' seem so juvenile, and her approach to life so immature, especially in comparison to her friends'. I am intrigued in particular by Eun-jung (her and Han-joo's backstories and current threads seem much more interesting and mature), but I'm not sure I'm digging it enough to keep going.

I was going to start Watcher, but based on comments here I'm thinking I might kick off with Misaeng instead. I've decided to binge FoE when it's fully aired, but am thinking of starting Missing this week and try to catch up. Still can't bring myself to start Save Me. I'm just too afraid of the anxiety right now.

And I'm waiting for Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol, which was my top pick for the northern hemisphere autumn, but I think that DYLB may have stolen its crown - but I love happy surprises like that and am hoping it just means I thoroughly enjoy both!

Watched 1988 earlier this year on a rigorous 1/week schedule. The episode lengths made it hard to schedule but once I figured out a block of time I could sit down, stay awake (a problem with watching shows on a tablet late at night!), and really pay attention, I found the immersion really paid off.

I ended up loving Melo so so so much (easy to guess which other drama is on my mind right now), but had a hard time starting it, too. I think I accepted that some of the characters were quite imperfect people more than many viewers did (and, sounds like, you) but found the totality of journey great (and, of course, bought the overall conceit of the show). Thanks to your comment and others (and the fact that I think Park Eun-Bin is great) it is starting to sound as though DYLB is next for me.

I'm so glad you enjoyed Reply 1988, too! Totally agree - I think it's better watched as a binge. I might keep giving Melo a go; I know the Dramas Over Flowers team thought it was one of the best of 2019, so I really want to like it. And I do hope that you'll give DYLB a chance - I truly didn't expect to fall so hard for it, and I love when that happens.

Reply 1988 is so overwhelming for me in a good way b/c of the lengthy episodes and my attention span towards other shows/life lol, that I have a hard time binging it. I started the show back at the end of Jan., and watched Ep 3 a few days ago :3. Not b/c it's not good, it is, but its a bit daunting for me to binge-watch the show. I think your method of once a week is smart, and I might do that so its less overwhelming for me.

With the virus as an endless issue and seems like it's not going away soon, my craving is going only to one palate: melo.
Currently watching Lies of Lies and When I Was The Prettiest.
Absolutely love LOL. Mother-daughter relationship is always heart wrenching. Plot is deliciously makjang, actings are stellar, pace is good. Rating reflects the overall quality of the show. Over 4% for relatively limited channel like Channel A is fantastic.

When I Was The Prettiest has the best drama cinematography so far for me. The scene where Yeji walks and Hwan quietly follows with his bike is a heart squeeze. So so beautiful.
Not a fan of ISH but I think she's not bad here. Of course it has plotholes and what-exactly-are-you-doing-here characters but this time, this time, please dramagods, let Jisoo gets the girl.

LONELY ENOUGH TO LOVE: Despite the low ratings, there is something about this drama that makes me wait for it every week. The concept of co-living, a struggling writer, a psychiatrist with a trauma its all cliches but still I am watching this. I knew there will be bad news regarding Lee Na Eun's book it's sad but I feel it might be a turning point in the relation between our leads.

DO YOU LIKE BRAHMS (3-4): I am just in love with the slow development between Song-ah and Joon-young. And yes I am just having a dislike for Jung-Kyung. I don't know if the writers want us to pity her for the tragedy but it still can't justify how manipulative she has been. Its like hurt people hurt people.

ALICE: I haven't watched episode 6 yet because of the unavailability of subtitles in my region I am not so hooked but it's tugging my curiosity regarding all the questions and I guess I will continue watching this. I am waiting for Min-Hyuk and Joo won to realize who they are actually. And O-Won has been an interesting character so far making us wonder which side he is on. The story continues to be interesting so far.

Missing: The other side: I just started this series and was bored to the core but still managed to finish the first episode and the last few minutes spiked my interest a bit. I guess I might go back and continue watching more for the village and its people.

RECORD OF YOUTH (1-2): The first episodes were a bit boring but I liked the interaction between leads. I find myself rooting for Hye-Jun to succeed. Crying Park Bo-gum seriously tugged my heartstrings. I am also waiting for the backstory of Jeong-ha. So far it's not as interesting as I thought it might be but I will still watch it for the leads and the friendship between the boys.

WHEN I WAS THE PRETTIEST: The only reason I continue watching this show is for the curiosity regarding Jin's disappearance. I am not on board for the romance arc between Hwan and Ye-Ji. The cinematography is still just fab.

I am also watching a few old and finished dramas of my watchlist
Dr Romantic 2: Aww...I still miss the leads of the first show but totally loved the second season too. Totally a different arc and I hope they go for a third season with both the cast together. It will be fun to watch Dong-Jo, In-Beom and Woo-Jin dealing cases together with dearest Doctor Kim.

Wednesday 3.30 pm: Such a cute watch it was. Although the story is nothing new I loved it. It was a short sweet series to watch.

Are you Human? : Six episodes into this I dropped the show. There are few Korean artists I avoid watching either due to their actions or because of the irrational off feeling I get whenever I watch them. Gong Seung-Yeon is one among them but I still tried to watch it for Kang-Joon and Joon-hyuk. It doesn't help that the FL was totally annoying in the first few episodes and I knew its impossible for me to endure her antics till her redemption arc.

Once Again (Episodes 11-17)
The drama ended this week and I am way behind but this may be what brings me back from my slump. I am reading the comments as I watch because I don’t want to be spoiled.

I watched 5 episodes today and if I had time I would watch more. Overall I am also enjoying that there aren’t any annoying characters, it’s overall a feel good drama with good acting. There are annoying sides to most characters (like real life) but they also have a pathetic side. I am happy to see that my faith in the writer of Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo, Oh My Ghostess and High School King of Savvy for good feels and warmth was justified. But I don’t find it as funny or the romance as appealing as Father is Strange so far.

It is a typical weekender in one sense: The parents always overreact first before they finally reconcile with their children and their choices. I know that reconciliation is supposed to be the payoff for the suffering but may be it’s cultural differences, I don’t have patience for such heavy-handedness from parents or seniors at work etc.

Regarding the romances: I don’t find the second chance romances of the two siblings appealing. I have no interest in seeing the divorcees get together. Oppa Joon Sun is not a bad guy. He clearly loves his wife and children and he is sweet but I can see why his wife’s patience with him ran out. She is so cold to him that I would only want them to get together for their children’s sake. The story I am interested from their family is their little girl finding speech.

I am even less interested in Na Hee and Gyu Jin coming back together because now they are in the middle of a love quadrangle. I don’t like it when people need an external push to see the value of someone they know well and should appreciate. I find Gyu Jin’s noona very boring (as a story as well as the actress). I find Na Hee’s sunbae and his story extremely dull as well. If this couple is to get back together they have very serious issues to overcome including a miscarriage for which one feels guilty about and the other said things he shouldn’t have and an interfering mother-in-law who looks down her daughter-in-law’s family. They don’t need the complication of other suitors.

Ga Hee has one of the more interesting stories in the drama. I am glad she said she will look for a job because with that louse of an ex she should be a better role model for her son. I find it sad and unfair that everybody (including her former colleagues) think she is not qualified to work anymore because she gave a career break. Her story with Hyo Shin is going in the direction I wanted with him bonding with her son first so I am loving that aspect. He needs some good male role models as well and her uncle isn’t there for him. No one at home seems to have realized he is being bullied at school. Hyo Shin is so far a black box. I am very curious about the “incident” and his past but...

I also don’t want to be spoiled and want to see as it gets revealed in the story. But there must be a reason why he is so understanding and helping the boy. He is giving Ga Hee the cold shoulder because he must have remembered her from their first meeting and now she is annoyed with him as well but she will change her tune as soon as she learns what he is doing for her son. But I am curious about what will change his perspective of her and how her family will accept such a young guy as a suitor for Ga Hee.

Da Hee is as bright and sunny as ever and she is the evidence to show that people’s reactions reflect how they are treated. She is the only one who can bring out the sweet side of Gyu Jin’s mother. Because of her failed relationship I am liking that in her romance story Jae Suk fell for her first. Of course he was in denial at first and now he is furiously trying to get over it but it will be good for both of them – until mommy dearest finds out. She will accept her in the end and be thankful but not before giving them hell. I wonder whether this fake girlfriend thing was a one off or it will come back.

The unexpected love triange of the drama is Ok Ja-Cho Yeon and Chi Soo. Initially I thought Cho Yeon was not interested so he would end up with Ok Ja but now I wonder what will happen. Regardless, it looks like the father of the family will take his friend into his family through his sister or sister-in-law. What a choice! And when will oppa discover his little sister is so near? How many times will they tease us by making him wonder due to some clues but throw him off the scent again by mentioning her father or something like that? Regardless, I like that the ice between the factions in the market have melted and they are all appreciative of each other and see each other’s good intentions.

It is a fact that probably no weekender will ever equal FATHER IS STRANGE. But for the most part things will end on a satisfactory note with ONCE AGAIN- there will be one annoying story arc but just bear with it. No spoilers here, enjoy this one as you go along.

Sadly I expect you are right regarding Father is Strange OldLawyer. I keep checking to see if its writer has anything new but alas! I think that show was close to perfection as far as weekenders go. However, I must say this is only second to that in my slim ventures into weekenders. A whole lot better than Mother of Mine for example.

I was on the road this week and managed only 3 episodes but was happy to see the pacing is still right and things are moving along. I wonder where the storyline of the part timer Hyo Shin working with oppa Joon Sun is going. He really wasn't interested and only agreed because of how proud father was. When he showed up in the drama I had wondered whether his father was rich (can't remember now what made me think of that) but he has some backstory to be revealed. His comment on Ga Hee's son who was ditched by his father on fathers sometimes being busy brought that thought to mind again. Also the video of the shoot circulating and his unwillingness to do it in the first place made me wonder if he was hiding from his family. Ice is finally breaking between Ga Hee and Hyo Shin as he sees her love of her son and she sees his good qualities.

The cat is now out of the bag for Jae Suk and Da Hee is on the run.

Ok Ja surprised me with her unexpected initiative and stealing Chi Soo from Cho Yeon.

The thing which remained most with me from these episodes was the sad situation of working women in Korea. Oppa's ex is taken advantage of regarding pay and blamed by her boss, Ga Hee struggles to find a job, then mistreated at the job, Na Hee is the receiving end of bad gossip at the hospital after the divorce... Life is so difficult for women.
