So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

Memorials: Nana is so hilariously weird and I’m already rooting for her to succeed and actually win office. There’s something about her character that I find very endearing, especially her devotion to doing what’s right. The first two episodes gave us a lot of information, but there’s so much more I want to know. The show’s also made the boring interesting: district elections. I’m looking forward to seeing more campaign hijinks and a totally unleashed Nana.

Currently recapping: Oh My Baby

My Unfamiliar Family: What I enjoy so much about this show is the focus on the imperfections of the family relationships. The mistakes that fester into misunderstandings are handled with a pettiness, grace, and forgiveness that are quintessential to family dynamics. Though some makjang-like plot points occasionally pop up, I think it’s tastefully done. The makjang tendencies don’t distract me or detract from the charm of this show, which has a solid footing in the complex yet well fleshed out relationships. In addition to the family dynamics, I’ve been rooting for Eun-hee and Chan-hyuk to unfriendzone each other for a while now, and the slow burn toward romance has me impatiently waiting in anticipation for the next episode!

It’s Okay to Not Be Okay: By episode 3, I was 100% hooked. The characters are interesting, and their stories are told in a captivating dark fairytale sort of way that is both visually and emotionally appealing. I love the erratic heroine and her iconic looks (reminiscent of IU’s looks from Hotel del Luna), and I appreciate that we’re already seeing many different sides to her. Seo Ye-ji and Kim Soo-hyun are really delivering on the acting and chemistry front, and I am excited to see more.

Currently weecapping: Backstreet Rookie

My Unfamiliar Family: Oh boy, I’m still loving this drama. It continues to be so well-written and grabs me every episode. It’s not exactly happy and fun, but there’s such an authenticity to our characters’ reactions, meltdowns, confrontations, and harsh words — it’s all so believable. I have been on Team Chan-hyuk since the get-go, so I’m reallllllllly liking where we are heading in that respect (*insert epic swoon here*). However, my heart has always been with little Ji-woo. He needs hugs. I hope he’s okay, but I feel like he’s ready to have his own meltdown now, after everyone else has had theirs. Gulp!

House on Wheels: I didn’t realize how much I needed a dose of sweet, wholesome variety until I watched Episode 2 of House on Wheels this week. Not only does this show give room for me to entertain my tiny house fantasy life, but it’s just so simple and lovely. Watching our cast chilling out on the beach, enjoying the sunrise, gobbling freshly caught fish, and cat napping the afternoon just filled me with an enjoyment of simple pleasures. And watching our cast enjoy those simple pleasures made me pay closer attention to the ones I was ignoring in my own life. It just goes to show how much some [screen-free] leisure time can do for your soul.

Currently recapping: My Unfamiliar Family

It’s Okay to Not Be Okay: Still loving it. I’m normally annoyed with the childhood trope, but I don’t mind it so much here since the story parallels fairy tales and such. The chemistry between the leads is great, and I find their relationship dynamic fascinating. Moon-young is clearly obsessed, and Kang-tae knows it and senses the danger in it, but he’s drawn to her. It’s reminding me of the relationship in Hundred Million Stars from the Sky. Let’s hope this one doesn’t give Moon-young a personality transplant in the second half of the drama because romantic love magically alters her brain chemistry.
