[Staff Spotlight] Get to know selena

Explain your username (and/or avatar).

Hey everyone! My name is Selena. I once ventured into a Kakao Friends store and came out with the squishiest Apeach plush. I’ve been obsessed ever since. All hail Apeach!

What is the first drama that you watched (or the first drama that made an impression)?

The first Korean drama I ever watched was Over the Rainbow where I fell in love with Seo Ji-hye and Ji Hyun-woo. To this day, dramas about aspiring singers working their way up to the top are a surefire way to pique my interest. Music and dramas just work so well together! I guess this explains why my gateway drama (the one that brought me deeeeeeep down the rabbit hole) was You’re Beautiful.

Name a job or two that you’ve had in the past.

Once upon a time, I was a collections agent for student loans. I still don’t know how I ended up doing that! It didn’t spark joy, so I spontaneously decided to move to South Korea where I taught English to the cutest elementary school kids.

Have you ever lived a moment that you thought belonged in a drama?

I played the tenor saxophone during high school. One day, I walked to the back of the bus, set my instrument down, and held on to a pole. The bus driver abruptly stomped on the brakes REALLY hard, so I had to make a split-second decision: save myself or the saxophone? Naturally, I chose the latter, letting go of the pole and regretting all my life decisions that led to this moment. Imagine those Kung Fu movies where someone gets gut-punched and flies through the air, with all their limbs out in front of them — that was me. I flew from the back and landed right next to the driver. You know how sometimes, a scene in a drama seems unrealistic because nobody got hurt? Well, I came out of this unscathed and it still boggles my mind. The only logical explanation is that I was, indeed, in a drama — maybe as an extra for comedic relief.

What’s your favorite drama you recapped?

When the Camellia Blooms was the first series I recapped and I really couldn’t have started with a better show! It was hectic but fun, and I was more than happy to have Kang Haneul screencaps taking over my pictures folder.

What drama genres do you especially like?

Rom-coms that make you both laugh and cry, and typically anything music-related.

What drama character would you want to be?

Choi Ae-ra from Fight My Way is one of my favorite drama characters. She’s strong, bold, and doesn’t back down easily without a fight. I could definitely learn a thing or two from her! It also doesn’t hurt that she has a doting puppy in the form of Park Seo-joon watching out for her.

What was your major in school?

Business Administration. I specialized in marketing and international business.

What’s a random skill you have?

If Slap Jack had teams, you’d want me on yours.

Favorite non-Korean movie and/or TV show?

She’s the Man. I also love The Good Place — it’s a fun comedy about life after death! They just wrapped up the series and that makes me sad, but the ending was great. I highly recommend it!

Which Hallyu celebrity would you actually want to meet and spend an hour with?

Jackson Wang, if you’re reading this… shoot me a message and we’ll plan something.

Which of the 7 deadly sins would be your undoing?

SLOTH!! I could sit there for hours doing nothing productive…it’s how I manage to binge watch TV shows. Lately though, I’ve been spending all my free time playing Animal Crossing instead.

Your favorite drama has an unholy alliance with your most hated drama and produces a mutant baby drama. Describe the plot.

A husband is so busy with work that he subsequently neglects his wife and child. The wife’s life revolves around their young son, and she’s lost her own identity as a result. The couple is filled with resentment for one another and one day, the heavens above grants their wishes, bringing them back to a time before they’d met. This sets them back in high school, where the husband, Kim Tan, is on the top of the pecking order. He decides not to pursue his wife and instead, focuses his efforts on wooing his first love. Despite being bullied and working extra shifts to make ends meet, the wife thrives as she re-discovers herself, earning the (unwanted) attention of Tan’s ex-best friend. However, you can’t fight fate and the spouses end up falling in love again, this time understanding how to properly treasure one another.

99.99% of all Minions prefer Sloth. Beanies too, I expect. Wrath might score higher than 0.01% if you poll right after a Netflix ending.

I actually spit out water while reading about your drama moment. That's hilarious. (Though it could've really ended up makjang-y, you know.) Awww, and Choi Aera! Probably one of my top 5 fave characters, ever.

Maybe if I start planning my revenge now, I'll make it just in time for it to be called my 15 year plan? (Taking a page out of Saeroyi's book.)

I don't know why most of baby mutant dramas have Heirs connection, haha.

Nice to know more about you, Selena. Love your recaps!

Woah, that was indeed a drama moment! I was imagining it in slow mo.. hehe. I'm glad you weren't hurt.

I also love The Good Place =)) but I haven't seen the last season yet. It's good to know that the ending's great.

It honestly happened in slow mo!
You'll need a bit of patience to power through the final season but the ending was worth it in my opinion :)

Hi selena! ♥ I feel you on Fight My Way, although the draw of that whole drama for me was Park Seo-joon in MMA mode hehehe

Hi Selena! Another Choi Ae-ra admirer here! Haha your drama moment is so funny!

I liked your Welcome recaps, you made the drama seem more fun than it actually is... I'm still struggling to get through it. You proved that wrath is not your undoing with that one. :P

Thank you for your kind words hehe, that means a lot :)

love your recaps...feels like a friend watching the dramas with me, same reactions hahaha.
Question!
Would you rather be the friend of the main female character with a few minor challenges and an ambiguous love story of your own... or be the second female lead that has all the beauty and success of the main girl's envy. Doesn't get the main male lead but has a possibility of having a relationship with the second male lead?
