The King: Eternal Monarch: Episode 4
by quirkycase
Our leading man’s sudden disappearance leaves our heroine confused. She can’t get the mysterious man and his absurd claims off her mind, so she goes in search of answers. But the closer she gets to the truth, the harder it is to accept. Meanwhile, our hero deals with the mess he left behind at the palace, even while his mind is still on the world he left behind.
EPISODE 4
On the shores of Busan, Rim witnesses time pause. In the republic, Na-ri makes Eun-seob an ice latte, but he drops it and bafflingly yelps, “Hot!” Simultaneously, Yeong drops a hot cup of coffee in the kingdom.
Yeong is notified that Seo-ryung has landed at the helipad unannounced. Through his earpiece, he’s then told that Gon has returned. Meanwhile, in the republic, Tae-eul walks lost in thought about her encounters with Gon.
She distracts herself by working on the Lee Sang-do murder case. In flashback, Gon asks her why she became a cop. He’s curious about people’s aspirations since he was born into his position. Tae-eul explains that when she was little, she watched cop shows rather than fairy tales. Gon points out that it’s a dangerous job, but that’s why she wanted to do it. Not everyone can be brave.
Gon told her she was cool, after which she asked what kind of king he was. He described himself as a rower, a mathematician, an orphan who grew up well and the owner of the Four Tiger Sword. It was a question he’d never been asked and felt anxious answering.
In the kingdom, Seo-ryung arrives at the palace and puts the staff in a difficult position. Seo-ryung tells Ok-nam she’s there to report to Gon, but Ok-nam reprimands her for barging in. Unless it’s a national emergency, written reports are the agreement.
Seo-ryung fires back that Gon is missing. Doesn’t that count as a national emergency? Ok-nam claims he went to bed after studying, but Seo-ryung isn’t buying it. She instructs Ok-nam to inform Gon she’ll be waiting in his study.
Ok-nam refuses to move and let her in, so Seo-ryung physically moves her, claiming only Gon has the authority to stop her. She flings open the study door to reveal Gon and Yeong. Ok-nam quickly covers her surprise and gives him an amazing “we’ll talk later” look before exiting.
Gon explains to Seo-ryung that he has been attempting to solve a mathematical puzzle. He apologizes for worrying her. She asks if he solved it. He did and his answer was zero. Seo-ryung is jealous he solved his problem since her own conclusion was incorrect.
Seo-ryung observes that he looks awfully tan considering he’s been holed up in his study. She admits she only came to check whether he was missing and steps closer to say he’s indebted to her now. She challenges him to solve this problem too.
Gon asserts that he’s the king, and his existence is the history of the country. He won’t ever be indebted to her. “Let’s wait and see how my absence will be recorded in history.” Seo-ryung leaves without a word.
Next in is Ok-nam, and she is not happy. She orders Yeong out, but Gon insists he stay and protect him. Ha. Gon hugs her and says he missed her, but she smacks him like an angry grandma. He apologizes and promises he’ll try not to worry her next time it happens.
Ok-nam dramatically asks how he’ll make it to her funeral if he’s so far away next time. After moaning about how much trouble he created, she spots his destroyed coat and is appalled Gon sold the buttons and spent all the cash. Gon pacifies Ok-nam, promising to help her handle things. As they leave, he notes Yeong’s suspicious silence and tattles to Ok-nam when Yeong glares at him. Pfft.
Prince Bu-yeong is notified that his security level will return to normal, making him realize Gon is back. Elsewhere, Ok-nam goes through Gon’s coat pockets and finds random things from the parallel world, including the book of poems and a stuffed lion keychain.
In the republic, Tae-eul and her sidekick Shin-jae ambush Moon-shik with her theory of Kim Bok-man not being the murderer. Shin-jae suggests they leave it at the gambling charge for now, and Tae-eul requests two weeks since the burner phone will be restored by then. Out of pure frustration, Moon-shik grants them two weeks to find evidence.
In the kingdom, Gon tells Ok-nam he wants the book from his coat pocket in his bedroom and the rest of the items in the study. She ignores him and informs him of the passing of his army superior’s father and suggests he attend the funeral. It’ll quell the rumors of him being ill.
Gon is relieved he came back on time, but Ok-nam snaps that he should’ve said where he was going in the first place. Uh, should they be having this conversation in front of those attendants?
Gon pays his respects at the funeral and catches up with the deceased’s son. Their relationship seems close and friendly. On the way back, Gon has a flashback of his uncle choking him and has to loosen his collar as he breathes heavily.
In the republic, Tae-eul and Shin-jae assist with a robbery investigation and help arrest the culprit. While they’re out, Shin-jae runs into a woman who asks him if he’s still having nightmares. Shin-jae hesitates but thinks of Tae-eul and replies he’s having good dreams too lately. She tells him to come see her again if his self-medicating with sweets doesn’t work.
Tae-eul was watching from a distance and bounces over once the woman leaves. She wonders who the woman could be, teasing that Shin-jae never talks to women unless it’s for work. He changes the subject to Gon and wonders if his horse is still at her place. Did Gon steal anything from her? She sighs that he left.
In the car, Gon asks if Yeong is going to keep giving him the silent treatment. Yeong holds out his hand and demands Gon’s phone so he can install a tracking app. Gon hands it over and nerds out about the development of GPS systems while Yeong sets up his account.
Seo-ryung holds a meeting with her Cabinet and is just about as pleasant as you’d expect when they don’t provide the results she wants. As she’s recovering from her disappointing meeting, her assistant bursts in to show her a video of Assemblyman Park – the one who accused her of sitting around doing her makeup – dissing her at a university event. This time he’s claiming she had a nose job.
She has dirt prepared and instructs her assistant to send scandalous photos of the assemblyman with a woman to the press. When he asks how she got the photos, Seo-ryung wonders how his dream can be to go into politics if he’s surprised by this kind of thing. He assures her he’ll send them right away.
After meeting with a man I’m assuming is an advisor of some kind, Seo-ryung goes out to meet Prince Bu-yeong. She tries to get information out of him about Gon, but he keeps quiet. She doesn’t buy the explanation that Gon locks himself away because math, especially since Prince Bu-yeong’s security increases every time it happens.
She pokes at him by asking if he doesn’t find his life unfair. He’s not allowed to be involved in politics or hold a high position. Plus, his kids and grandkids are forced to live abroad. Prince Bu-yeong calmly asserts he’s never felt that way. He brings up her average background and muses that class disparity is unlikely to disappear.
He wants her to get to the point; their meeting could spark controversy. That’s her intention. She shows him news on Assemblyman Park’s sex scandal that got him ousted from the party. Seo-ryung hopes people will assume she has Prince Bu-yeong’s backing now that they’ve been seen together.
Later, Gon pays Prince Bu-yeong a surprise visit at his office. Prince Bu-yeong asks about his trip which Gon says was his most exciting one yet. Gon isn’t keen on Prince Bu-yeong’s suggestion that he get married and carry on his line and jokes that he sounds like he’s from Joseon.
Looking at Prince Bu-yeong’s family photo, Gon reminisces that his favorite photo is of him holding hands with Prince Bu-yeong and Ok-nam on a school field trip. Rim’s bloody attempted coup put Gon on the throne, and now Prince Bu-yeong’s family has to live abroad. “Is my father’s cousin on my side or not?”
Prince Bu-yeong claims he’s being ridiculous. Should he kill his own children to prove his loyalty? He already had them live abroad and forbade them from returning. Prince Bu-yeong thinks he’s being swayed by rumors, but Gon assures him that’s not the case. He does feel the prince is hiding something from him.
Gon trusts and admires him, so he asks him not to hide anything. He leaves an envelope containing a problem he can’t solve. Prince Bu-yeong opens it to find Lee Rim’s autopsy report.
Outside, Gon wonders if the library is in the same place here. They make a trip there, and Gon sits lonely in the cleared-out library. In its counterpart, Tae-eul reads about parallel universes. We flash between them, and the images of their worlds merge as they sit across from each other, her side full of people while his is empty.
In the republic, Shin-jae’s mother MIN HWA-YEON (Hwang Young-hee) comes home with a purse full of cash he wrestles away from her. She promises it’s the last time, but it’s obvious they’ve been here before. Shin-jae makes her give up the gambling house’s info and has Jangmi meet them there.
While Jangmi takes photos of the gamblers, Shin-jae runs into that same gang leader who fought with him and Tae-eul. Looks like he’s running this place. Shin-jae vows to put him away, but the boss reminds him that his mom should suffer the consequences, too.
Shin-jae dumps the cash his mother won at the boss’s feet, declaring that he’d be a joke of a police officer if he accepted this money. He begs his mother to come to her senses, but Hwa-yeon can’t see past the cash she just lost.
Police arrive and Shin-jae instructs them to arrest everyone there. Jangmi stays behind to help, but Shin-jae walks out. Outside, he fights tears as his mother pleads with the cops to let her go and yells for Shin-jae.
Beside her car, Tae-eul pauses and stares at her stuffed lion keychain – it matches Gon’s – when a bicycle clips her, sending her ID badge flying down a sewer grate. The kid comes over to apologize and offers to fish it out. Hey, isn’t that yo-yo boy?
Tae-eul muses that it’s gone now: her performance assessment, her promotion … she gives a slightly crazed laugh and smile-grimaces as she assures him with false pep, “It’s okay.” Ha. She gets a call from Kyung-ran that sends her to the station.
Kyung-ran urgently asks where she got the money. She’s spooked as she holds a bill from Gon’s wallet (with his face on it) and shares that all evidence points to it being real currency printed by a bank.
In the bookshop, Rim receives another secret note stating Gon has returned. He connects the time pauses with Gon’s departure and subsequent return, realizing his nephew has finally discovered the “legend.”
Gon makes a trip back to the room where his father was slain. It’s overgrown with vines and covered in dust. He pulls the Four Tiger Sword from its case and unsheathes it. In a flashback, his father explains the “calling” of the legendary sword meant to be wielded thoughtfully and defeat evil.
Only the king can own it, and he asks if Gon can abide by this calling. He immediately responds he can but takes it back when his father tests his mettle by asking what if he had to eat beans and spinach. The king laughs. In the present, Gon places the sword in a case in his bedroom.
In the republic, Tae-eul goes searching for clues to Gon’s whereabouts in the bamboo forest – he was caught heading there on CCTV – but there’s no trace of him. Gon, meanwhile, stares at Tae-eul’s ID but swiftly returns it to his pocket when Yeong comes up and berates him for upsetting Ok-nam again.
Time slows and pauses. Gon counts the seconds and informs Yeong, once it restarts, that it’s the second time that time has stopped. Yeong sighs and asks where Gon went. Gon honestly replies he was in a parallel universe where their country is called the Republic of Korea. Yeong repeats it back dubiously and shakes his head. He’ll call for a doctor. Gon goes chasing after him when Yeong yells for Ok-nam.
In the republic, Kyung-moo’s alternate drives Rim around and asks about the other world. He knows about his alternate and asks for equal treatment from Rim when it’s all over. Rim shares that Kyung-moo owns a bookshop and passes along a book Kyung-moo wanted him to have.
Rim visits Jeong-hye and mentions her frequent visits to her son’s grave before telling her she’ll have to eat alone tonight. She pitches a cleaning rag at his back and angrily asks why he never ages. He ignores her and walks out. Her sobs can be heard outside her apartment.
Rim enters the apartment opposite hers, which he’s turned into a photo development space. He stares at a freshly developed photo of Prince Bu-yeong as menacing music plays.
In the kingdom, Gon sits at his desk and stares at the favorite photo he previously mentioned. He asks if he got any phone calls, but he didn’t. Per Ok-nam’s request, Yeong stands guard inside and more guards stand outside the window in case Gon tries to escape.
Meanwhile, Tae-eul gets her ID reissued and asks when it’ll be ready. They tell her it’ll take a week, so late October. Thinking of Gon’s claim that her ID issue date was November 11, she breathes a sigh of relief. On her walk home, she passes the spot they were in when Gon claimed time stopped. She wonders what “beautiful thing” he saw.
Back in the kingdom, Secretary Mo informs Gon that Seo-ryung won the battle about the assembly members’ pay raise. She brings up Seo-ryung’s flirting and worries Gon could fall prey to her beauty. Gon tells her not to worry; he knows someone way prettier. Secretary Mo nervously smiles and throws a WTF look over her shoulder at Yeong.
A crack of thunder sounds, and Gon grabs his shoulder in pain. He sends Secretary Mo out with strict orders to keep this from Ok-nam and gets Yeong to check his shoulder. Yeong thinks he’s messing around, but he sees the mark on Gon’s skin when the next round of thunder hits. When Yeong runs for the doctor, Gon makes a break for it.
In the republic, Tae-eul gets the restored information from the burner phone. She listens to the voice memos, but oddly enough, they’re news clip recordings about some health training initiative in Thailand. The business head mentioned is none other than Professor Lee Jong-in (aka Prince Bu-yeong). Hmm…
Shin-jae startles her out of her reverie when he drops her new ID on her desk. Her nags her for losing her ID and being without one for so long. She counters that she meant to pick up earlier, but he notes that it was only issued today. Tae-eul flips it over and stares at the date in shock: November 11, 2019.
Tae-eul sits dazed until her phone rings. She gets her second shock of the evening when she hears Gon’s voice on the other end. She slams the phone back on the receiver, but he calls right back. Shaken, she hangs up a second time and rushes out.
When she gets home, Gon is waiting (with Maximus, of course) in her yard. After some slow-mo walking, she asks where he was. They do the familiar song and dance with her accusing him of lying when he mentions the parallel world. Why did he come back? Gon replies he had money to repay, a chicken stamp card to fill and he wanted to know how she was.
She stares at him silently. Now that he has returned the money and seen Tae-eul, he says he should go. She asks if he genuinely has a house to which he replies he has a huge one. Tae-eul asks a final question: was her hair up or down in the ID photo of hers he has?
Gon suddenly realizes what day it is. “That’s why it was today,” he muses. Tae-eul repeats the question, demanding and yet fearing his response. Without hesitation, he says her hair was up and walks over to pull her hair back in demonstration.
Tae-eul doesn’t meet his eyes as she asks what about her clothes? Was she in uniform? Gon claims it was a navy suit jacket. Tae-eul shakily breathes out, “There’s no way.” Gon offers her the chance to come with him and see for herself. “Let’s go to my world.”
She says he’s dead if he’s lying to her. Gon takes her hand and hoists her onto Maximus before hopping up behind her. They ride into the bamboo forest. Tae-eul derides herself for crazily believing him, but he smiles and tells her not to be startled.
Gon urges Maximus forward, and Tae-eul sees the gate. She squeezes her eyes shut as they leap through to the other side. Yeong comes running up with the guards, and his eyes widen when he sees Tae-eul. Gon orders the guards back since Tae-eul is in a state of shock.
She stares at Yeong and wonders is he … ? Gon responds that he’s Eun-seob in her world. “See, I was right, wasn’t I?” She turns to look at him anew. “I’m the king of the Kingdom of Corea, and my name, that can’t be called, is Lee Gon.”
COMMENTS
Okay, now I feel like we’re getting somewhere with Gon bringing Tae-eul to his world. With them both on the same page, I’m curious to see what this does for their relationship dynamic. The whole “I’m from a parallel universe,” met by, “No, you’re not” was getting old. This will shake things up and allow them to get to know each other better without the distrust hanging between them. Being in this world has the potential for more character growth too, I think. Gon is much more human when he’s around Ok-nam and Yeong, and we’ll finally get to see Tae-eul outside of her cop element. Plotwise, it’ll be helpful for Gon to have an ally in the other world who’s in the know since we already know Rim has established a base in both worlds. Now Tae-eul and Gon can work together to foil Rim’s evil schemes and whatnot.
I’ve been trying to put my finger on why things are feeling somewhat disjointed for me, and I think it’s that there isn’t much to grab onto. Information is doled out in tidbits, and it’s hard to even know what’s relevant and why. I wish we’d focused more on plot in the early episodes and developed the relationship between Gon and Tae-eul more slowly. Putting the focus on the relationship at the start has made it feel rushed and hard to connect to, and we haven’t gotten enough on the plot front to grab onto that instead. Of course, the editing is also playing a part. It’s hard to keep everything straight when we’re constantly flipping back and forth between the worlds and having to keep track of a plethora of characters, some of whom look the same, in both. I seriously wish the worlds had some visibly distinguishing features.
It looks like that murder case we’ve been focusing on is linked to the main plot, although it’s anyone’s guess as to how at this point. But it can’t be a coincidence that Prince Bu-yeong was mentioned on that recording on Lee Sang-do’s phone. Another seemingly minor thing that looks like it’ll become relevant: yo-yo boy. Clearly, he’s important somehow since we’ve seen him in both the kingdom and the republic. Is it the same kid or his alternate? I wonder if he’s part of Rim’s network somehow or if he’s linked in some other way. Rim has been hiding in the shadows being shifty for decades now, and we only know vaguely of his movements, but he’s obviously been watching things closely in both worlds. Most things are probably linked to him.
Now that we know Rim has eyes in the palace, I keep looking at everyone wondering who’s on his side. Like that nervous new attendant who was in the room while Gon and Ok-nam discussed how Gon had been gone. And then there’s the question of Prince Bu-yeong’s loyalties. He strikes me as the type to play things smart, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s loyal to no one in particular. We saw with the doctored autopsy report that he’s willing to be unscrupulous when he feels the situation calls for it, so although I don’t think he’s evil, he’s not full of integrity either. From that picture Rim had, he’s at least keeping his eye on the prince.
I can sense I might be headed for a case of Second Lead Syndrome here because poor Shin-jae really needs a win. He’s fighting for a decent life for himself, but his mom’s gambling addiction is bringing them both down. Although it was rough, I can understand why he let his mom get arrested. She expects Shin-jae’s position to protect her, so maybe letting her face the consequences will help break the cycle. It’s a slim chance, seeing how addicted she is, but Shin-jae must be desperate by now. I’m assuming that woman he met was his therapist, and I’m curious to know what’s going on with those nightmares. I’m sensing more trauma in his past that we’re unaware of, although I hope not. Can we please give him a break?
And I just have to give a shoutout to the amazingly expressive Kim Young-ok as Ok-nam. I could watch her make faces at people all day, especially when she’s irritated. The woman has the best stink eye around. I also love her dramatics, like bemoaning how Gon will miss her funeral if he keeps leaving. She uses whatever’s at her disposal, and I’m here for it. Besides Shin-jae, she’s the only character I feel particularly attached to. I mean, how can you not appreciate a tiny old lady who can make grown men cower with the mere power of her gaze.

4th Episode was really exciting and sealed me completed into this show. I am sold. Probably my favourite KES drama so far. It mostly has to do with the pairing being somewhat lovely characters.
I gotta admit before diving in to this I was doubtful but all that was removed and I found myself enjoying this drama quite alot. I loved specifically the last part of the 4th episode the chemistry and relationship has developed as it should have. A stranger crossing over to another world running into a cop? Was exactly not where to expect an instant free flowing relationship it had it's awkward moments which was intended to be so because they wanted to be as realistic as possible and it paid off in the end. She slowly started to believe in him and started to develope feelings towards him it didn't just explod from the get go. This was key in sealing my interest and loyality to this show.
As far as the acting goes I think it's pretty well acted by all the cast I can't really pinpoint a weak point even the less experienced supporting roles are doing decent job in making this mysterious world come alive.
The premise is what got me into this drama to begin with. The parallel worlds, Time-travel, magical flute, overpowerful villian who tried to eliminate his nephew who was underaged brutally that was a powerful scene and not to forget the cinamatography, scenery and the production value is absolutely great.
I necessarily don't have any issue with the monologues and according to most koreans it's the best part of the show as the characters had to master specific different tones, dialects and royal elegant language which we foreigners can't really appreciate because we can't simply grab that part nor understand.
As for the chemistry of the main lead. I was in the beginning thinking Hmm! But as time went by I truly loved them together and yes I agree they are cute together. They seem to have good energy around each other which is pleasant

The first 4 episodes were very slow but I am really hoping it picks up going forward. The dialogue is lacking for me somewhat. Its not the acting, everyone ( LMH, Kim Go Eun, etc ) are doing a great job but the dialogue is missing. Its like this drama doesnt have an identity yet and people are disappointed. In Goblin, you cried 8 times during the 1st episode, in Mr. Sunshine, you were intrigued, In Secret Garden, the dialogue was fun and witty, DOTS captured people from the 1st episode. I feel like those dramas had specific identities from the offset and this one lacks that so people are a bit negative. I read a comment that said they didnt understand why people were upset because it was a regular drama but the problem is people don't expect a regular drama with this writer, they expect something extraordinary. So far, I have had to lower my expectations so I can enjoy it more. Like I previously stated the cinematography deserves awards, the beauty of each scene especially the shots of the palace are breathtaking but the dialogue falls short. You have a prince wondering around a republic aimlessly doing nothing ( missed opportunities like the poster previously said) . Also, they should have honestly had Tae Eul in the Kingdom by the end of episode 2, not sure why it took 4 episodes. I am not somewhat excited to see this weeks episode now that she is in the Kingdom, hopefully it will pick up.

Good point about identity, that's definitely the case here, it's a bit all over the place but maybe this week it won't be given ep 4 seems to have improved. I agree her going to his world should have just happened in EP 2. the first two eps should have been tight and not as slow as it i was. Felt like it dragged to get here. But its all happening now so we will have to wait to see if they can keep the ball rolling now and be fun at least.
That's the reason I tuned in, because you have the expectation that KES in drama's are not like any other drama, they are more blockbuster types.

I second your opinion about the identity. There is too much information till 4th episode without any meaningful connection. Let's say how the cases which Tae-eul's solving is actually affecting the story, IDK it should at least have meager connection with the story. Though the PM is trying so hard, she looks more of fashion icon than the political candidate, and one side she wants to get involve in romance with Gon and the split second, she wants to get back at him. Still don't know where to look forward to?

Noooo....I have a feeling his bodyguard will die in the fight to defeat evil. Why else is his nickname 'unbreakable sword'. Sobs.
Thanks for the recap @quirkycase. I'm glad they are now on the same page. I look forward to them exploring the possibilities of Corea in ep 5. Hopefully Luna and Shinjae2.0 will finally appear! 😆

Interesting theory, maybe it's foreshadowing do hwans character. I mean he is a bodyguard, there is a good chance he may die protecting lee Gon.
I'm also looking forward to Luna, hope we see her soon and find out what her role is in this whole thing.
Also yup let's see what's Shin Jae is like in Corea of they focus on that.

I love the sound of Lady Noh's voice when she read the poem. Such sadness. It felt like she wrote it herself.

@kiara Right?? I got the impression that she knows something about the book or the author.
I had to look up Azaleas and Kim So Wol. I didn't know it's one of the most important works of modern Korean poetry. It seems to be packed with symbolism that can be applied to this drama:

Once again, I wish I knew Korean to read the original poems. It's a much better literary reference than Alice in Wonderland, which between you and me, I never liked.

Oh wow. Thanks for sharing and looking beyond the surface.
My mind wondered because I was hoping for a forbidden love backstory with Lady Noh and a mysterious man or Prince Buyeong lol.

@wishfultoki, I encourage you to really learn it. In my city (Toronto, Canada), the Consulate General of South Korea has an education centre, and they do offer Korean class. I am in basic level 2 now. The course is only CAD$50 only (textbook excluded, which is around the same price). Worth to do that.

"Somehow' because of the poem i think one of the leads will die or the story will end with 2 in separate worlds."
Trust me, @noone, I don't think Kim Eun-soek will let that happen. She either break the rule to force a happy ending like «Goblin/Guardian»*, or announce it will be a sad ending in advance like «Mr. Sunshine». But if the former possibility comes true, that will be the most hatred ending I will ever be experiencing (and that is why I don't like «Goblin»).
*Should Kim Shin's sword on his chest be pulled out, he will be disappeared for good, but he somehow stay, and make the happy ending happened, this is what I mean.

With regard to goblin: him not dying when the sword was taken out was weird and defied logic and not a great plot point.
But him living alone and everyone passing on was pretty lonely and sad for me. I mean though his love interest is born again but she will pass away again and again he will be on his own... at least for me that ending was meloncholic. Grim reaper moving on was the hardest for me. It reminded me of some lessons from she.
Mr. Sunshine: i have to see when i am ready to cry.
This drama: it is a commercial drama so even i dont know if they would want a sad end though the music as of now and the poem hint at future sadness. I will not believe that it is to make me feel sad for them for their current circumstances coz that would be ridiculous.
Someone somewhere wrote that he will not let his beloved's name be called thrice such that she departs... so maybe it hints at rescue. But the poem is meloncholic according to me.
Regarding korean classes: i wanted to learn but at one point they were a long distance away and at another on days that i wasnt in the city :( but with my korean drama/lit/manhwa obsession am wondering if it is time to try to opt for korean classes again :D

@noone, Wish to greet you sometimes later in Korean soon!! I need to work hard too.
(Not sure which city you are in though, but I guess you are in Canada?)
«Goblin»: You’ve exactly got my point, and I don’t need to say more. What I need to say is: I don’t think this “happy” ending make sense, and I don’t think the ending is happy.
«Mr. Sunshine»: Prepare to cry very hard especially the last 2 episodes. It is a complete and satisfying ending, and probably the only KES drama I like. I can guarantee.
«The King»: I am still not sure if it is a happy or sad ending, but at least I finally find somethings very interesting at the end of Ep.4 (and the whole Ep.5, too) because I really get something to follow. But more on that at the next recap.
However, what I am hoping for is an ending which is make sense, meaningful and satisfying, despite happy or sad. I didn’t watch too many dramas, but the dramas I do love are 2 played by IU, «My Mister» and «Hotel del Luna», one of the reasons is they both end well, simple as that.

@imperialtitus : I have never been to canada though I would love to visit :) We definitely will converse in Korean one day, if I continue to enjoy kdramas and korean manhua as much as I do.
As for other dramas: happy to recommend more. Am not the best consumer out there as I started watching in 2018 but I have watched many. Was a media student at one point, so am interested in consumption and production of this branch. Also, I keep trying to understand why do I enjoy korean productions? Japanese anime but korean dramas :D
Mainland Chinese manhuas can be fun, anime are extremely funny but no satisfactory story archs while dramas are a disappointment (generally!).
I liked hotel del luna for the layers that theorists offered and funny actics. The minute they started making the male lead stronger and FL became dependent, I started losing my taste. I also think am a better binger than current drama consumer. I have only watched clips but never got around to seeing episode 14-16 as I didnt feel like crying. Am easily manipulated by dramas where I invest in characters. As you can read, my drama experiences are very much about me, thus am often too interested in what other people experience :D

Re. the sword: I think Gon's shoulder pain with the yellowish energy streaks is related to the fact that he is the owner of the Four Tiger Sword, with which he accidentally cut the flute in two as a kid. The magical force/energy/whatchamacallit from the two objects clashed and opened the portal... if it's going to take breaking the sword to close it, well, it seems to me like Gon is in more danger than Yeong. (Maybe they both die.... maybe they all die and only Maximus survives).
Also the stuffed animal keychain seems to hint at the metaphor of Lee Gon = tiger. Or lion? Anyway, I promised myself I wouldn't think too deeply about this show, because I KES has a way of throwing all my theories overboard with FATE in the last stretch.

That header picture is so beautiful. I think maybe the director is starting to find his feet? When the time stops I like looking at those shots, it makes me think of paintings. I also, liked the rain scenes how it looked and sounded.
When we can freely move around and money is also moving again anyone want to go to Korea and wear beautiful coats, walk through a bamboo forest, and when it starts to rain find a pretty cafe to sit in and drink coffee and eat cake as we people watch looking for the couples sharing umbrellas?
WDH. So. Very. Handsome. Also, I really enjoyed Yeong this episode. I think we are finally seeing his personality come out and maybe hints of the bromance.
Shin-jae needs to be happy and having sweet dreams at the end of this. I know that romance shouldn't always be the barometer for a characters happiness, but I kind of want someone to LOVE him. Well besides Jangmi. I want Shin-jae to become Jangmi's bestest friend.
Alot of the storylines I'm still not quite following or seeing how they will all weave together.
I also feel like we were still in set up mode and now have hope that we might actually be getting into the heart of the story.
I really want to start seeing all these characters meet each other and interact with each other. Once I'm clear in what exactly it is they are up against I wouldn't mind seeing a cross dimensional scooby gang.
Maximus is still the most beautiful horse in Korea and Corea.

I must agree when times stops, the cinematography is so unbelievably beautiful, seriously Hollywood level. However, the actual dialogue needs to pick up. I feel like the director maybe a bit more " artistic" and leaves the "unsaid" for the audience to figure out but that doesnt really work. It didnt work on the last few seasons of Game of Thrones and it wont work on this.. lol

High five @kiara! I keep watching the time stops. Even Uncle got his artistic moment in that scene by the sea, with the waves crashing and freezing mid-air. I was distinctly reminded of this painting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wanderer_above_the_Sea_of_Fog
One thing I noticed is that water is involved in all the time stops: drops of water, sea, and rain. I don't think it means much but it sure is beautiful. What a delight for WDH fans to watch him in that dreamy palace scene. :)

Wow, thanks for sharing. The feels :).
There is a lot of historical back stories and references that keeps me glued to this drama.
Water, sea and rain. Maybe there is something there from the legend/tale of the flute aka the Manpasikjeok that Rim was reciting.
"When the flute is played....sweet rains came after drought, the bright sun shone in the the down pour, the wind was mild and the sea was calm..."
Rim made a comment in earlier episodes that the world is peaceful. When time stop?

There is so much stuff in my head. Applying it to the story and translating it to English (3rd language ) is a bit challenging.
In Joseon we are used to water, rain and sea as a bad omen for the king but here it's a good omen with the sound of the flute because it brings peace.

Pray, please share the story behind why rain/sea were considered a bad omen for the king in joseon? I want a good story :)
WishfulToki
April 30, 2020 at 5:59 AM
@kiara I would never think English is your third language! I can hardly manage two languages *bows*
I'll have to rewatch the first 5 minutes of Ep 1 with Evil Uncle's lesson on Manpasikjeok. I'll be pleased as a peach if my observation about water has any meaning. Perhaps the flute's element (water, wood) clashed with the sword's lightning (metal, fire), causing a break in the earth in the form of the portal.
@noone all I can think of is that water and water maids were important for Goryeo. I still remember @barbrey's fascinating comments during MOON LOVERS: SCARLET HEART. If the king rejects the water maid, his rule goes down the drain.
I'm trying to think of Joseon examples... usually eclipses and storms are bad omens I think? But they can also be positive? Yi Seong Gye tried to time a ceremony with an eclipse in JANG YOUNGSIL: THE GREATEST SCIENTIST OF JOSEON, but it backfired when the astronomy guys miscalculated the date.
kiara
April 30, 2020 at 7:46 AM
@wishfultoki
You are too kind :).
I started watching out of curiosity because Korea's history is fascinating and "what if" the House of Yi continues to rule to this day.
Therefore, I'm looking at things from a historical perspective.
Although this is a fantasy world, there is something stimulating about seeing the changes from the old Joseon to this new empire.
Some restrictions are lifted and the advancements in Science and technology that was pioneered by Joseon's sage king Sejong flourished in both worlds.
(Yay for JANG YOUNGSIL).
Some rules still apply to the king's close relatives in order to protect the throne and their loyalty will always be in questioned.
I really like Prince Buyeong. I hope he is on Lee Gon's side.
The Korean viewers should be familiar with the many historical references but it span for thousand of years from the 3 kingdom era (Silla) to the Joseon Dynasty. It may take a bit of effort to make the connection.
I'm probably the only crazy person who doesn't mind the pace because it's jam packed with clues and symbolism.
That's the fun part for me, it's like looking for easter eggs.
anonymous
May 1, 2020 at 3:54 AM
@kiara Well call me crazy too because I think the pacing is perfect. I love the details scattered throughout the show that add to the world-building and give hints to the mysteries. I'm surprised that so far, there aren't really any filler scenes or overly long shots that are typical of KES dramas. Except maybe for the PPL scenes and scenes between the main leads. But even then, while the leads eat mouth-watering chicken, we get fascinating conversations on how Corean history is different from Korea's. As someone who loves to read about history and even imagine how things would have been different, I enjoy those scenes. I like that they seem to have put a lot of thought into the alternate history, and I hope they give us more. I miss most of the symbolisms because I'm not knowledgeable on Korean culture, so your and other beanies' comments are helpful and add another layer that makes this show so enjoyable to watch.
I really like Prince Buyeong too and want him to be on Gon's side, but it doesn't bode well for me that we haven't seen his counterpart yet and that Rim has his photo in his dark room. Interestingly, in that photo, he's wearing the clothes he wore while meeting with the prime minister and later Gon.

I am surely interested in what is @kiara’s first language. English is my second language as well, and I am trying to make Korean my third (for exposure, Cantonese is my mother tongue, and I understand Mandarin and French).
There is also something interesting in “alternative history” if the House of Yi continue to rule Corea/Korea (Another “alternative history” drama which I find fascinating is a Norwegian called «Occupied», which stream on Netflix in North America). In «The King», seems that Empire of Corea has become some kind of a Switzerland, with 3 capitals (Busan for Royal, Seoul for Politic, and Pyongyang for Economic), and probably it is also a neutral state between some big powers (China, Japan, Russia, and more?)
@wishfultoki, I am pretty sure solar eclipses are bad omens, but not sure about the storms, since in a country putting agriculture as their first priority in economy, having some rain does help. This is also why if the king rejects the water maid, his rule goes down the drain. But anyway, I am not familiar about the “5 elements” legend, so I stop here.

I think they are together in the sense that he has forced her to work along side him and for him, but not together in any physical/sexual sense.
When the police came to the door back when her husband and child were dead, he basically set up a blackmail scenario. I think he frightened her into helping him with the charade that he was her brother-in-law- he's supposedly been confined to a wheelchair and couldn't speak and now he can walk and talk. He'd need her help to pull that off and assure people that he is really her brother-in-law.
I'm sure she regrets it now, but it's the kind of thing where the longer you participate, the less you can extricate yourself.

Yes, exactly. I'm very much aware that there's a ton of stuff going on which I'm hardly seeing/acknowledging but is probably hugely relevant later (yoyos, bookshops, maths, lightning shaped wounds and on and on and on). At the same time, I don't have enough info about individual characters and motivations to make sense of them/care for them yet (save Shin Jae). Finally. A scene that roused me from my foggy stupor. KES was aiming to make her viewers swoon in the end scene, and, hey, she did it - for me, anyway. It was like a scene from my favourite romantic novel - dashing hero grabs wide-eyed heroine by the waist, tosses her masterfully onto majestic white steed and gallops into the unknown. Toss in the tall green bamboo, the falling snowflakes, a blinding light, a crash of lightning, and KAZAAM! I'm a goner! And when he leaned in to her, and murmured, low in her ear, "Told you so, didn't I?" my heart fluttered. Just a little flip. Thump thump. And it was back to normal. Still, that's a start.
Maybe, I found this scene romantic because they were on horseback. Maybe, Lee Gon should just have all his scenes with her on horseback. In a dark forest. And keep his lines short. Avoid draggy monologues. And, maybe she should stop shrieking and rolling her eyes at him, and just, maybe, not say anything. Maybe that might work. Maybe.

Right! I totally missed that. But I'm still confused with the future past thing. Is it like the time travel shown in harry Potter? Would that be ROK to KOC and then in past?Where they could go back in the past? May be. Let's see how this mystery is unravelled :)

It incorporated time travel from the vary beginning with the badge. That clearly shows some time travel is involved.

It's taking time for KES to build this world compared to her other projects. So it's good to know that we're going somewhere after 4 episodes.
Scene with chibi-Gon and royal father was such a heartwarming moment.
I may not be a fan of the directing yet but those paused scenes look awesome!

OK, she's not the math wiz of the show, but she can still put 2 and 2 together.

I kind of want a chance to use this as an excuse at some point to get out of things.

I havent seen it explained if he is some famous math scholar? Does he use his math for something?

I wouldn't be surprised if he turns out to have spent the last 20+ years doing some genius-level calculations to deduce to existence of the alternate world and the properties of the gate.

Then boy definitely deserves something equivalent to Nobel prize for Maths...But I doubt if it exists in his world..Oops Einstein exists,so does his Nobel which means it wouldn't be far fetched if Gon publishes his baffling theory and gets a medal..

One of my biggest question is how they gonna merge fantasy with science .I m really getting curious about that .Okay I get it that Einstein proposed theory of relativity which gave birth to the idea of parallel universe. I want to know how using that fact they will connect it with the flute. Theory of relativity is a fact acknowledged by many and Einstein should have got Nobel for it instead of the Photoelectric effect. And being a science student I can't help but think that how the flute is related to this theory in a scientific way. The story behind flute is a myth, folklore,a fantasy whereas Theory of relativity is a reality. Do they really gonna tie the thread or just leave it to the fact that Theory of relativity proves its (parallel universe)existence and to reach the other world you need the flute. Annnddd
....that'ss it!!! If they gonna put it to that I m simply gonna be so pissed. Cause you either explain it from an entire fantastical view wrt the flute only for example Harry Potter which had a world of its own,or rather show only facts which is scientifically addressed for example Inception (which was beyond my capacity though 😅). I mean what is the point of LG doing wonders on his greenboards, windows where all I could see was Limit tending to infinity..😂.You just can't mix those two genres just as you please and screw our brain even if you have the right to exploit your story in the name of fiction. This is the main thing that is keeping me interested so far.Only 4 episodes have gone and I hope the writer goes in that direction so that I get my desired answers. Episode 4 is the most interesting one so far. Hope she keeps the upward trend.

Applying my own 2 plus 2 capabilities, I expect more cases of connections between doppelgangers in the future whenever the gate opens. This will probably be significant somehow.

Hmm..this connection is baffling. Why now? If the connection goes on, what will happen to evil uncle plans. If he kills one doppelganger, won't the other be killed too?

I wonder if it's something that has always been happening, whenever two doppelgangers are doing essentially the same thing at the same time, wires sometimes cross- but nobody knows because nobody but Rim and Gon knew about the parallel worlds.

Agree, likely happening all along and people just thought "Huh, that's funny" and went about their business.
No guesses about how they will use this for the plot but if anyone in the show tries it explain why it happens I expect we might hear "quantum entanglement".

From that very last scene I think we're finally going to get some chemistry out of Tae-eul. Being handsome isn't enough for her, Gon needs to be super rich and not a liar or lunatic for her to look at him like that. True love indeed. Cough, cough.

If this were to go the traditional romance route, we could expect a Pretty Woman Moment in the upcoming episodes. Heroine is given a complete overhaul from sparkling gowns to makeup and perfumes and shoes. There will be an overload of PPL. A romantic Moment is almost guaranteed - a sweet song, and eyes locking across a crowded ballroom. He will take one look at her and fall in love all over again.
There will be a Moment of tension between the enigmatic, red-taloned PM and the confused heroine. A triangle, of sorts. Though, wouldn't it have been more delicious if Lee Gon hadn't shown his dislike of The Other Woman so clearly? A fiancéé tucked away in Corea would have made it so much more angsty.
Of course, this could go the other way.
Our feisty heroine could put her fiercely independent feet down and continue the way she has, clothes, sass and all.
The only thing I am sure of is this: chicken will make an appearance in the next episode.

Honestly, I hope a pretty woman makeover is done because I am ready to shoot the wardrobe person responsible for Tae Euls concept..If they can make a fashionable Prime Minister lady, they can make a fashionable police detective.. 😂🤣😂🤣

I rather want her to remain as as she is right now, with those blowsy grandma shirts and baggy grandpa pants. And it's sweet (in font, anyway, if not on the screen) that he likes her in spite of, and, perhaps, because of her appearance.
Let me think for a bit.
....
....
Okay. Thought for 5 seconds.
Here's what I think.
She is the very antithesis of what he has seen so far in Corea. The seductive PM is obviously a beautiful woman, perfect in looks, if not in character. Our king's idea of The Perfect Woman is the Woman of His Dreams. A down-to-earth, tough and independent woman with a loud mouth and enough sass to get his heart pounding and his blood roaring in his veins - not that I have seen much evidence of that so far, well, except for that last scene, that cheeky grin, and that flare in his dark eyes. His eyes did flare, didn't they? They kind of smouldered...I's like to think I didn't imagine that.

I want her to keep her clothes too. I dont mind makeover scenes or characters changing their style as they discover what they like, but this heroine seems confident in who she is.
Though we might get a dress up scene like Secret Garden.
Secret Garden was one of my early dramas and thinking back on that kiss scene in the middle of the party....I now know that is fairly uncommon. I need to re read the recaps to see if they mention being surprised by that.

I get your perspective, my only thing is how the viewer sees her. We need to see a Queen and right now, I am not getting that vibe from her. Its not just the wardrobe, its the persona. I think the PM is too flashy. I prefer something more Song Hye Kyo in Encounter style.
Even if the King is okay with it her wardrobe is visually unappetizing for me. I know its done on purpose but its not a sell in a drama. Fashion is very important in dramas, especially for me. I remember loving Goong for the wardrobe of the Crown Princess. In My Princess ( Kim Tae Hee) also looked beautiful. The K Drama the Mask, Almost every outfit I googled. Kim Go Eun was better dressed in Cheese in the Trap than she is now.
I really do see your point and that is likely where the director is trying to go but I love love love fashion so I am disappointed in our leading lady's style.

@bcampbell1662 Oh, Secret Garden was a KES drama? I didn't know that. I avoided it for years, but @bbstl convinced me to watch it - I was besotted with Hyun Bin after MoA - and, it was awesome. I never watched it because of the body swap thing, but that drama tore my heart up. I can still remember the crack of lightning, and the moments when he would walk across the garden, turn, and she would be right there, beside him. Beautiful show, with many poignant moments.
@candiland I hope they will turn her into a beautiful Queen for your sake. They may even have her marry him - how about that? - and she'll become the Queen of Corea. That's one way to drive the ratings up.

@yyishere LOL, its possible but unlikely, the fact that Lee Gon proposed in episode 2 is indicative of an unhappy ending, but we shall see. However, yes, I want her to get the Royal experience which she may get. However, dramas are a package ( visuals, fashions, scenery, etc) so I am waiting for them to deliver the full package. Maybe the wardrobe budget went to the male lead because LMH has been super fly since this drama started.

No makeover, please! I like the way she dresses. Ladies in Dramaland usually do prim (you know: ruffled shirts, pastel colours... mainly dressing like a 6 year old on her way to granny's home for Sunday lunch), or sophisticated (see: PM). I enjoy it when they do casual. Also agree with the argument that she looks the more attractive to Gon because he's not used to seeing women being natural

I like the way she dresses too.
Female cops chasing after criminals on heels is eye-rolling.
I also like the way she ties her hair up when she is pissed off. Most female tv cops have perfect hair like they just walked out of a salon.
It was a disaster when she tried to dress up like a city chick. Even the boys called her ahjumma haha.

What is it with KDramas always trying to make high-water pants happen? I've seen so many lead females flooding their hearts out and tall men wearing suits that look awful cause the pant legs are too short. Every time I think to myself, "Stop trying to make fetch happen!"

Bwahahaha Gretchen Weiners.. LOL.. Yes, I noticed the same thing with high water pants. If you enjoy classic fashionista's in K dramas.. I would recommend Encounter, The Mask, and Hotel De Luna.. The dresses and outfits in each of those dramas were 😍😍😍..However, the best dressed TV show diva's were easily Olivia Pope from Scandal and Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl.. 👍
