Ji Chang-wook, Kim Yoo-jung engage in boss-employee romance in Convenience Store Saet-byul

A cute romance begins in the U.S.-based Lifetime channel’s first K-drama investment, Convenience Store Saet-byul. It’s a drama based on a serial webtoon that has reached over 40 million subscribers. Ji Chang-wook (Melting Me Softly) is set to play the manager of a convenience store, and Kim Yoo-jung (Clean With Passion for Now) is set to play his part-time worker.

Ji Chang wook’s character may be handsome, but he’s actually quite clueless at times. He used to work for a large corporation, but he quit his job in order to set up his own convenience store as his dreams collided with reality. He will be a character that is highly relatable to youths these days, who are struggling with employment and other similar worries.

The female lead, played by Kim Yoo-jung, is a spacey oddball character who has a rebellious past but still retains an innocent mindset. She comes to Ji Chang-wook’s store as the night shift worker, determined to put her past behind her and to lead a life that stays true to values like maintaining social justice.

With this recent casting news, Convenience Store Saet-byul, directed by Fiery Priest’s PD Lee Myung-woo, will go into filming soon, and is expected to air sometime in the fall of 2020.

Dramas that are based upon successful webtoons are often very good. That is because both the original writer and the drama writers who interpret his or her work each bring perspective to the story. I may give this one a shot- assuming I can access it.

Remember- if it has 40 million subscribers then the original story is probably very good

I would also like to respectfully suggest that equating the female lead to a 'candy' is nonsensical- here the character is described as a spacey oddball with a rebellious past and a strong sense of justice. This is not the typical description of Candy.

As for the 'power difference' the convenience store owner is in no real position of power over the female lead- there are many convenience stores out there and she can easily quit and go to work in another one- so the owner has no real hold on her. As for the age difference- it is part of the story and at my age it doesn't look as great as it may appear to others. In the end the only real issue is can they understand, respect and trust each other?

Looking at the description of this story it seems like it could really work- a nice story about two lost souls finding each other. We shall see if that is what we get but if it is it will be very worth watching.

I...can't fathom why they would pair these two. I understand she's of age blah blahhh but there's such a thing as appearance casting. There are sooo many youthful looking actors who are amazing actors so...whyyyy? I can literally think of 6 different actors she would be great with. By pairing her with an awkward partner, her potential to shine with her youthful, bubbly personality is squandered D,: By pairing Ji Chang Wook with an awkward girl-just-turned-adult when he can easily be paired with a mature actress to portray an older romance is...frustrating. I love both of these actors...which is why this is so frustrating.

I've been waiting since forever to see her paired up with the other group of child actors that she grew up with. Park Ji-bin (24), Yeo Jin-goo (22), Young Ju Seo (21), Shin Dong-woo (21),Park Gun-woo (23), Lee David (25), and even Noh Young-hak (26) Lee Hyun-woo (26) Yoo Seung-ho (26) and the younger Lee Min-ho aka Kim Tae-ri is also (26) etc etc.

I'm hoping to hear more about her new movie with Lee Sung Min and Nam Da-reum.

Yeaaa she'd be amazing with Yeo seung-ho and Nam da-reum. I'd also like to see her with Jinyoung (from Got7) or even the slightly older crew Park hyung-shik and Do Kyung-soo. The latter guys LOOK young and when paired together can portray a believable relationship. They're also all really great actors. Sooo much unmet potential...D,:

The problem is only YJG is at her level of popularity. She can't carry a drama without a popular co-star unlike So Hyun who can make Love Alarm a success despite the only big name star in the cast.

That's true. But many not-so-big actors get their break on television at some point so I suppose waiting is an option, but it's her choice. I understand what you're saying, and it seems like a challenging situation for her...

The problem is not the age gap but the ridiculous plot. I too have read that they will change a lot, but I don't expect an author drama with poetic dialogues, but a drama full of erotic implications. Wokkie is good at action drama and Yoo Jung is not just a doll and deserves more attention than managers in choosing roles. Why not make her a CEO and
Ji Chang-wook her employee? Enough of this male chauvinism,

Ok then she would be the boss romancing an employee... because she is a female that’s perfectly fine and appropriate?

I'm a bit uncomfortable when seeing her with Yoon Kyun Sang in Clean with Passion for Now due to their age. 12 years gap is not really a matter if the girl is 25+ or above but she's barely 20 and it made me cringe. And now with Ji Chang-wook, hmm .. I'm not so sure.
Can we bringing her back to Park Bo Geum or Jin Gu?

I had watched K2 twice and liked JCW’s roll in it and cannot understand people who wanted his character romantically involved with the evil lady and not with the innocent one. What I understood of the drama was this: He knew he had done wrong things as a mercenary but he still has a sense of what justice means. He decided between the rude world of greed and power and chose to protect the life of someone who was denied justice because the greed of all the people around her; he fell in love because her vulnerability and because his good side needed to protect someone, as he had failed with the first girl he loved. The evil roll in a drama will always be a strong one, but that does not mean that everything has to go their way. She wanted to dominate him while he wanted to protect her, her evil actions turned him away. That is why the writers did not let him fall for her, that it was the contrast of the story.
I would like to see JCW in a strong roll again but do not want to let him loose that soft side that make you fall for him. He needs to do more action rolls with some or less romantic scenes. That is also why I liked K2. Love dramas where the good no matter how ‘weak’ wins the day! Writers should move him from these lovey-dovey rolls to a more mature ones. Healer was very good. I do not think I would like to see him in Convenient Store. MMS did not move me at all.
