HAPPY FRIDAY BEANIES ♡ Hope you all have had a good week so far. I’m counting down the days till my Christmas holidays start (18 days to go) so I can finally just relax without having to worry about school.

Have you guys ever had this problem where you have this vision of this EXACT outfit you want to wear, but when you actually look for the pieces to put it together... you can’t find a thing? It’s soooo annoying. I wish I could just magically make perfectly fitted clothes for myself out of thin air.

That would be me, and the best (but really worst) part that expectation rarely met reality when you put that outfit together ;)

I have the same problem whenever I am thinking of cosplaying on a low budget. (Not that I have money or creativity to pull it of on high budget, do not read me wrong). ;)

I still often ask my mom whether my outfit choice is acceptable, because I am not fashionable at all! :P

I have this dream of this dress. Its a charcoal gray dress made of the coziest of sweatshirt material, comes down to just below the knees. The sleeves and collar are the baseball t-shirt style and they are a floral rose pattern on the same charcoal gray background. I have no idea where this dress came from. It lives in my dreams. It sounds so pretty and comfortable and cozy and I WANT IT (although knowing me I'd get it and be all...but...what do I wear with this? Knee high boots? Tights? Leggings? What color tights? I bought this nifty 60s inspired dress navy blue background with orange and white tiny flowers. So pretty! It fits so well! Every time I look at it Im like...what do I do with you? What color shoes? Heels? Boots? BOOTIES? Flats? CAN I wear tights with you? Because I love tights and leggings. WHAT COLOR?! SO CONFUSED I've had this dress for seriously like 4 months. It still has the tags because every time I pull it out I'm just...stumped)

So...yes. I am QUITE familiar with this outfit dilemma!

“Because I love tights and leggings.” Did I write that? Ha😃 I think cute navy flats and bare legs or thin navy tights sounds like it would go with that perfect dress of yours. I love the sound of that comfy drama dress you described too!

that grey dress sounds so cute and comfy!! maybe one day you'll find it!

since I live in Singapore where the weather is always crazy hot, I never wear heels (the swelling will kill you) or boots, and most of the time, it's too hot to wear tights or yoga pants for anything other than, well... yoga! hahaha. so if I were you, I'd probably be wearing flats or sandals with that pretty dress!

This Christmas, I'm looking for a dress, preferably white/cream or maybe even floral, with long flounced or ruffle sleeves, with a high neckline, kind of vintage-style. You wouldn't BELIEVE how difficult it's been to find something suitable (especially for a shortie like me 🤦‍♀️)... Maybe I just have to give up 🤣🤣🤣

Happy weekend Beanies! May the great weather be with you, because autumn here entered in dreary phase, it's cold, dark and rainy. I binge-finished "The Longest Day in Chang'an" and it was best Chinese drama I watched so far, I'm off to read whatever I find about Tang Dynasty and Silk Road and I'm fairly impressed with Jackson Yee, he was able to keep up with more experience actors. Now I'm feeling weird not having any drama to obsess over.

Chang'an is on my to watch list. It looks excellent but I've not really been in the mood for the drama. I watched the first episode right after finishing The Untamed for the first time and just wasn't ready to watch that type of drama yet.

I will eventually watch it though as from the first episode alone I could tell it was going to be an amazing drama.

Happy Weekend Beanies!

First things first: *puts hands on her hips and uses Eomma tone* @michykdrama get off social media and start reading! :P

Strange job hunt story time: Before I started my previous job, back in February an acquaintance tipped me off about some vacancies in her company and I applied, got interviewed and ghosted. It happens all the time, so I do not think much of the situation (and the company for that particular behavior), moved on and got eventually hired on my previous workplace.

Yesterday this acquaintance contacts me again about the same vacancies and asks my permission to forward my resume to her manager. Five minutes later I get a call from that manager. He is very interested in my profile and still in dire need of extra staff, but by some mystery all applicants keep getting rejected and the company itself also got ghosted about the whole recruitment process. Very strange, considering that the recruiting department used high-tech applications to keep applicants updated and yet waited a very long time to vaguely inform me that I had not been hired back then.

Therefore the manager has decided to take matters into his own hands and has requested transparency about my job interview back then. On top of that he has scheduled another job interview that he himself will conduct with some of my (future?) colleagues, to make sure that I am the right fit for the job. I am of course happy for the second chance, but I also feel bad for the manager and the company. Ghosting applicants is not nice, but it does not cause that much harm. However, ghosting your company and its employees about recruitment processes, accidentally or not, is not done.

It did end my week on an exciting note, since I only had one other interesting job application to busy myself with. The god siblings were also sick and exempted from daycare/kindergarten, so helping my parents with taking care of the poor terrors was the main priority this week.

I did manage to read Pride and Prejudice (10/61 chapters) and write roughly 1700 words for Nanowrimo in between all that. The word target is 3000 for now, but that will increase soon. I wish I could do more at a calmer pace, but I am quite proud of how I am keeping up with both challenges.

I am however juggling 4 K-dramas again, and I do not know whether to be proud or to worry for my sanity. Extraordinary You was almost put on the back burner, but this week’s episodes were too good to postpone. That means that Rookie Historian, Pegasus Market and No Second Chances were put on hold instead. :P

Ooooh! A fellow noveller! You're doing way better than me... 8 days in and I've got 0 words to show for it.

Job interview issues are extremely annoying - especially when it's the company doing shady shtuffs. I hope it works out for you this time, if you want it to, and if the company's shady recruitment practices don't put you off of working there.

I am exceeding my own nanowrimo expectations by actually writing more than 100 words this time ;) So do not feel bad, because I am literally writing 3000 words (excluding Dramabeans gallore) because I want to write more, a 50,000 words novel is too much :p The fun part about the whole project is that you can do whatever you want and people will still be supportive ;)

As for the company, it worked out for the best, actually. Recruitment has usually no idea about what people are supposed to do on the job, so I prefer applying to employers/department heads directly. Unfortunately they often leave it to the recruitment department or external recruiters, sigh.

(Thank you for grouping me with Dame Judi)

We each have our own paces with writing, even though we look around and seem to see people speeding/chugging ahead. It comforts me sometimes that I’m not the only unpublished writer of my friends from uni, in spite of the fact that the others often had much more successful nanowrimos than I ever had (yes, I am that petty...)

3

It just occurs to me we should have made a db nanowrimo group and used the site to encourage each other and organise virtual write-ins with each other... Maybe next year?

2

@leetennant @hotcocoagirl @turtuallysarcastic @isthatacorner, how about we choose our own month for a writing group? I didn't sign up for Nanowrimo this year because I figured it would be a disaster anyway (like everything else this year), but then just this morning inspiration struck and I wrote 1000 words and made notes, and I think I might actually really run with this idea.

Anyway, how about we start the new year with a group? That way 2019's bad vibes won't taint what we do.

7

Beanie Writing Group @egads
I love it!

3

@egads & @leetennant

I’m in ~ I know I will likely be useless for organizing and only good at saying when I can’t make it, (I’m planning a solid six months of chaos post move/new job), but if someone wants to give me a structure to both write and interact with others in January sign me up ~

3

Y'all I think I would actually write with a beanie lead writing group. What a great idea!

I like gardening. I like to see flowers bloom and it always irked me how much happiness human derive by plucking these beauties for their own gratification. Flowers look good when they are alive not when you pluck them to show your feelings.

What kind of love is shown by taking a beautiful life?

I know Floricuture is such a big business and livelihood of 1000s but still i just can't understand he logic of it.

There are times when you do something in real life and suddenly remember a scene or an act or event from media. A fictional event.

Similar scene is from - High End Crush. As usual Hero gives Heroine a bunch of flowers and heroine say something and i really liked liked that scene.

Well, in one other drama someone actually give a flowerpot. Practical solution. But in a romantic scenario looks much like knitted sweeter or knitted scarf. Pushing it hard.

Latest - 15min episodes. kdrama. Heroine has those decorated plants. Easy to compare real life with fictional

I agree about flowers - bouquets are pretty, but I feel sorry for the shortened lives of the flowers! When I was little, my sister and I "helped" our grandmother by picking some flowers in her garden - we quickly learned that the flowers are meant to be enjoyed alive!

2

Required fields are marked *

I get why people use flowers as a +ve measure but the base of it is a -ve action. Its the same old someone's misery is someone other's happiness. I have never ever (as far as i remember) given or plucked anyone flower
flowers.(This is my own policy as well as principle) Blooming flowers are like cheery children. Alive they give you immense happiness.

2

I just don't get giving cut flowers because their beauty is so short lived and kinda seem pointless to me. That's why when I give flowers I always give potted plants so their beauty will last longer.

3

Required fields are marked *

That's such a good thing. I honestly do like bouquets but yes they are very short lived. The happiness would be way greater if we constantly see those flowers alive. I'll probably gift potted plants from now on too.

2

Required fields are marked *

That's the best choice. I call them decoration or show piece(non flower ones) But as i said in main comment - for the receiver it can be a bothersome to take care of a plant. This is why i never suggested it to my mom.
Artificial flowers a good option but then human world already have too much plastic waste.
Everything has its pros and cons. But after the real struggle you get to come across one best choice.

I love flowers and I love to have them in my garden - so I can take photographs of them. Especially in the growing season when I can catch a dahlia unfolding over a couple of days.
There is a FB group of flower photography - but mostly cut flowers. :-(

So I give photos of flowers so they last longer for sure. I've posted some on my fan wall if you want to see them.

2

Required fields are marked *

As a lover of plants in all forms - as a gardener, house plant keeper, and bouquet lover, I have to disagree with you. Cutting flowers does not kill or harm a plant, anymore than having a haircut damages your health. Often cutting blooms encourages a plant to be more floriferous. As long as you are meeting a plant's need for water, nutrients, and light you are taking care of it, not harming it when you harvest its flowers. And flowers fade and wither even when you leave them on the plant. Remember: the flower is not the plant.

If you are cutting flowers from your garden, it helps to take a few here and there if you don't want your flowering plants to look bare. Or you could have a separate cutting garden bed.

w00t to the weekend Beanies!

Don't have too much to share - heading back to my home town for a friend's wedding. We've got our first dusting of snow - which people are freaking out about, yet... it's totally not uncommon. Maybe slightly early, but still in the realm of normal. The slowly declining temperatures outside plus the heat cranked up in my office make it pretty difficult to get dressed in the morning. Secret Boutique - Oh wow, episodes 10 & 11! Unexpected revelations!

Melting Me Softly - Using the fast-forward button so much with this drama that I watched two episodes in about half an hour. This might be a new record for me.

Pegasus Market - Halloween episode was a hoot!

Vagabond - Edward Park. Just what is he all about?

My Country - That guard from Ihwaru who sometimes accompanies Hee-jae, has he been instructed to just stand around? Because it seems to be the only thing he does well.

I want to try and learn Korean so that my drama watching becomes easier. But right now I am already learning Spanish as a beginner and am not sure if I should be learning both languages at the same time. I already know three languages. And I have read that Korean is easy to learn and that you can learn Hangul in a few hours. I wonder if Duolingo is a good way to learn Korean. I am thinking maybe I should learn Hangul first and then use Duolingo. I am only looking for a basic understanding as of now.

Me and my sister had a fight today. I wanted to watch kdramas with her but she thinks I can't find time to watch with her and that when she wants to watch with me I am too tired or sleeping.Thing is I am available to watch with her most of the time but she is doing other things or not watching with me whenever she is free, and by the time I get tired she comes to me and gets angry and tells me why did I slept even though its cause I wait for her to have time. But she just doesn't have the same consideration. Or says she will watch alone and sometimes I give in or let her watch alone. And she hates cliffhangers so much that she will watch a lot like crazy and it's hard to keep up with her. She first told me she will watch some other kdrama while I don't get time but now says she can't wait for the next episode so she can't watch something else. She thinks it's better not to watch anything together at all. Sigh, I really like watching with her and it's one of the very few things we do together but I just don't want to fight with her over something like that. So I have decided not to watch with her. There goes the only person I share interest in kdramas with.

LingoDeer is much better than Duolingo altough not free, but really worth it. Hangul is easy but grammar is not, plus sentence structure really differ a lot from usual European's languages.
Maybe try watching it at your own pace and discuss dramas together later?

Ah cause my other languages that is Hindi and Marathi (both of which use the same alphabets), are similar in two respects that I know about so with korean it will probably be easier for me. Both Korean and Hindi/Marathi use the same alphabets for the same sounds and the sentence structure of both Is Subject object verb, as for Korean pronunciation, it actually easy for me too (Also though I have used romanization to learn song lyrics for K-pop I have no problem in reading it with almost correct pronunciation).

Also since I don't earn and have a job yet, I am not allowed to use even my money for buying apps, so that is out of question. So Duolingo or YouTube it is.

Also my sister doesn't want to talk about anything we don't watch together nor talk about other kdrama related stuff that's other than related to the particular episode we are watching (sometimes not even then). Plus she only mostly likes crime and horror (not even most fantasy) and though while I'll watch any genre within some limits I still prefer to avoid crime and horror if I can, though we do find something to watch anyway. Nor does she even wants me to know what she herself is watching at all (not at all, nothing, she will not even have me look at what she is watching, even sometimes by mistake) cause privacy. Plus no currently airing dramas for her either.

Learning Korean is quite manageable, especially if you're watching dramas! I learnt the alphabet on YouTube, and a lot of the rest came from watching dramas and picking up speech patterns and stuff. In my experience, at least, the more I watched, the more I became familiar with how native speakers use their language. I do have a knack for languages, though, so maybe that's why it was fairly doable for me? My sister, on the other hand, isn't as comfortable learning languages, and hasn't picked up much after years of listening to kpop/watching dramas.

I find Koran easy to pronounce and my sister is the one who manages to remember words and phrases while I struggle, but she is surprised that I am the one who is right on how to pronounce the words correctly. I also always have to prove her through Google translation (robotic voice aside) that she has misheard a word or mispronounced it cause despite her remembering more words cause that is a problem for her.

Maybe the way you and your sister can set a schedule to watch dramas together: so many hours/episodes on certain days of the week.

Having mutually agreed upon parameters (a compromise) can help manage expectations on both your parts. So if you can come to an agreement ahead of time, then it may help prevent arguing or feeling disappointed about it in the moment.

Good luck! It's fun to watch and discuss with others. And you can always discuss with Beanies. :)

This is months later, but just caught up with the zombie infested Joseon era Kingdom. What. a. show. it's cruel to wait months for the next season.

I have this burning question and I hope ppl here can help out. In the last episode 6, it is revealed that the zombies are temperature dependent and not light to be alive. So why did the zombies wake up only at dawn to attack? the previous night when all were ready for the zombies, it was cold as well , so why were the zombies not alive then? (Prime Minister Cho's attendant also says - that the night is very cold so he should get some rest). Why did the zombies not attack during the cold night?

Ju Ji-Hoon is so attractive because of the subtle shades of reluctance and fear that he embodies. The last show of his fearing face , close up - ace.

Bae Doona is good! Her way of speaking in that era's proper Korean is fine and not theatrical as usually portrayed. She is so dazed and stunned and tired when we meet her with the prince, and hence just monotoned in her talk. She is someone who is quiet , soft spoken yet has immense strength and fearlessness in character. Doona nailed it.
The Queen is creepy, the actress good!

I just am so lost about the zombies attack in the last episode. The prime minster knew that they would attack in the morn, why did not in the cold night? This plot hole? is eating my head..

I stopped watching Camellias because the stress and murder were too much, stopped watching Catch the ghost the second our sweet cop got that loan, and stopped Nokdu (which i loved) when drama of older son started. I had already stopped watching vagabond and melting because the plots were getting silly. I stopped watching Lies Within because the actress only seems to have been given one emotion to play and i was getting bored with that. Min ki notwithstanding. I should just suck up and watch stuff i like right.

Faves now are:
Extraordinary you -- i thought i indulged in character torture when i write my stories but the writer of the mangas in this drama is either obsessive, struggles with ADD, unable to come up with new characters, or stuck with tropes.

My Country -- This is one drama i never fast-forward. There is never a dull moment. I'm even interested in the scheming. And i love Jang Hyuk. He's so dang likeable. Plus i always liked Bang Won as a historical figure. Blame Six Flying Dragons for that.

Miss Lee: Soo good! I love these working class dramas that totally explain how some economic situation or business works but i also love the characters and the relative absence of tropes. Please, writer-nim, no redemption arc for Ji-Na please!

Pegasus Market: Ohmigosh! I got goose pimples from the korean folklore halloweenand felt so proud of the show for that. And the ramen nostalgia scenes made me laugh out loud. Love this drama.

Jdramas
Junichi -- Love this drama so much. Writer better starts showing some more layers of the story though. There is just so much episodic stuff i can take without having an actual story arc.

Busu... (In love with the ugly girl): Pretty girls are entitled and mean is all i have to say. Mercifully jdramas don't thrown around redemption arcs like kdramas do but they don't throw around happy endings much either. So i'm wary.

Happy weekend, all.

@Carole - can't speak for all the others, but Nokdu deserves a go, hyung's heel face turn was an unexpected direction but I actually think it makes for an interesting spin on the usual 'scheming plotters who plot' trope in sageuks.

I've stayed with The Lies Within too, I find it weirdly compelling (I have so many questions!) but I agree that Lee Yoo-young is underused. I love her as Seo-hee anyway, but she deserves better than being stuck in the long-suffering-wife trope. Things generally look up when she and Lee Min-ki have a scene together, even if they're at odds.

i loved nokdu also. loved it but when it comes to certain drama lies, i just can't. i should force myself to get back into it. I'll force myself to get with Lies Within because i do like the male leads but dang. The roles for women in this drama are so stereotypical. Fearful mom, quivering jelly wife, tough female cop. Aigoo!

Hi Everyone and Happy OT!
It's 11.30pm and I just stopped work for the day. Eyes are strained 😵 and bleary. 😩 Still I had to drop by (Heh!)

I just got a nice Crispy Choc cake for my 21 year old's birthday. Will eat it tomorrow. Chocolate lovers, don't you just rejoice seeing the toppings of different kinds of chocolate all over a base of... errr chocolate? White and dark choc in rounds and discs and cubes and even in powdered form, sifted over softly. Even the Happy Birthday is on a special choc card. 🎂 Can't wait to eat it! 🎂

As my kids' birthdays are close to mine, I'm making it an excuse that I can get to 'share' this birthday cake with at least one of them. 😉

I'm watching very few shows and sporadically ... one thought that hit me when watching Catch the Ghost - 'Oh no,... are the characters who first appeared to have ability and nice personalities now changing to become irritating, soppy, unable to make the right decisions especially professionally?' Likely due of course to 'lurve' and jealousy. Sigh. I hope I'm wrong but some hints and indications have got me worried.

To all lovers of The Untamed, although I will tag few or none, I may still be adding stuff to my fan wall. Do drop by just in case!! 😉 You can keep tagging me if you like. I'll flit and lurk around your walls ... so busy... sigh 😣 😢 🤪

Also good: spice cake with caramel frosting and maybe a layer of fruit jam/jelly between; carrot cake with cream cheese frosting; banana bread with chocolate chips; and chocolate chip cookies baked with salted butter.

Hi Beanies🌞

It's my first time in Spain, exactly Girona, Catalunya and we're staying in an amazing house in the old city centre. It's lot of first time for me these days and although I'm a horrible person for producing more CO2 by traveling by car, but it's beautiful.

I ate cuttlefish black rice and it reminded me of the cuttlefish black noodles scene in Scent of a Woman. It was really nice. I got scolded at first that why I didn't take Paella, but I like to try something different. We'll see how it goes but tomorrow morning I would like to go to see the museum of art just next to us.

Anyone have experiente with making kimchi? I'm thinking of trying to make my own kimchi as I've been eating a lot of store bought one lately and I wonder if it would be hard to just make my own. I also miss having some korean bbq, there are lots of korean restaurants in the area where I live but I don't think any of my friends would be up for it and I would feel awkward going on my own. I guess that's the problem from being the only one in my social circle who enjoys kdramas and korean cuisine. Funny thing is one of my ex-housemates is a kpop and kdrama fan, but I only found out after we both moved to different areas. I should maybe make some other friends but it's not that easy.

I started making kimchi around 2 years ago because of k-dramas, and now I make it all the time :D As for the smell, it is not necessarilly so bad, depends how sensitive you are about it :D also, it is much better to use glass containers (jars, e.g.) than the plastic ones, because they wash much better afterwards :) And this is the recipe I follow: https://www.maangchi.com/recipe/tongbaechu-kimchi

My husband and I make our own as well. We’ve even bought a mini clay vessel (a smaller version of those huge ones you see in kdramas) and make it one a month or so. I would recommend you chop all the cabbage before brining it. It’s so much easier and takes up less space if you do. Using glass jars is also a must. The smell doesn’t permeate through them as much. It’s not hard to make, just can be a little time consuming. We brine our cabbage in a sink, so that leaves us without a sink for a day or so! Good thing we have another!

I have been eating kimchi my whole life and have watched it being made many times, but have never made it myself. If you are going to make it in any volume you might want to buy a mini-fridge to use as a kimchi refrigerator. My mom kept one in the garage.

Happy Friday all my fellow lovely Beanies ❤️ After today I have a 3-day weekend with my Birthday on Monday 😁 I'm going to spend it being utterly lazy by laying in bed reading and watching dramas. It will be glorious.

Extraordinary You Ep. 4 (8) Love love love this one. My favorite out of the ones I'm watching. Love the meta humor and the characters. Can't wait to visit my mom next weekend and continue watching this.

Tale of Nokdu Ep. 3 (6) I am enjoying this but a bit disappointed it is as heavily political as it is. I can tell it will get dramatic and dark later on which dampers my enthusiasm. I was hoping for a light and humorous cross-dressing drama. Both actors are great though and love them.

Graceful Family Ep. 6 Liking it, mostly for how awesome Mo Seok-hee is. But I've started getting frustrated as the baddies keep getting the upper-hand. I hate dramas that have the bad guys winning until the very last episode, with almost no progress by the heroes. Hopefully this drama doesn't go that way.

Vagabond Ep. 6 The action is entertaining but there are so many suspend belief and ridiculous things that it comes off as humorous when it shouldn't. The drama takes itself way too serious which I think is the problem. I also HATE the shaking cam.

Love and Destiny Ep. 1 Only 1 episode so far but I am already interested. I loved 10 Miles of Peach Blossoms (it was my first cdrama and what got me into cdramas) and this definitely has all the hallmarks of that drama (it's done by the same production group after all). Liking the main actress and she fits her role. Not sure on the main actor as I've not seen enough of him yet to really judge. He seems so old though (yes, I'm shallow). But if he's a good actor I don't care about that.

I'm caught up on Nokdu and I get your concerns about the politics stuff, but I think it's pretty well done because the focus of that storyline is still very character-centric and not just stock villains plotting.

So far (ep 11), the story's been really good at balancing out the lighter elements with the more intense ones, there's still lots to enjoy and I hope you do!

Can we touch on the unprecedented level of badness that is 'Melting Me Softly'? Its so bad (in an un-entertaining way) that it just takes your breath away.
Some good can come from 'Melting', though. It serves to differentiate between genuinely bad dramas and well done drama's you simply didn't like the ending of. Perhaps you didn't like where Misty, Cheese in the Trap or Pretty Noona took the story. But that's a different matter from the gross storytelling incompetence of 'Melting'.

I'm reminded of the last half of the series 'Secret Hotel'. The screenwriter had passed away halfway through production and the remaining story became a garbled mess. That mess still retained some pathos, though. The screenwriter had written a character into the story who was dying of cancer but didn't tell her coworkers about it.

Melting me Softly reminds me of Strong Woman Do Bong Soon. It was horribly written made almost no sense, had weird pointless tangents, would give you whiplash from cute and fluffy to super dark at the drop of a hat, spent way too long on side characters or stories and was even offensive at times. So I'm not surprised Melting Me Softly is also horribly written as it is done by the same writer. When I heard she was the writer I got really worried and sadly my worries came to fruition ☹️ I was super excited for Ji Chang-Wook comeback drama also.

I confess I watched the premiere of Melting me softly, the two episodes, thinking they would go somewhere, but feeling out of tune, really, because of so much screaming and so much nonsense.... Since then, reading the recaps and all your comments, I realize it was safe not to keep on watching.
Strong woman was my first drama where I commented while airing, and I enjoy the togetherness of criticism as well as swooning with Park hyun shik, because he was so awesome funny and handsome.
I remember I had lots of fun just by waiting for the recaps and the commenting section.
As we all know, the Parks pair carried out the whole show pretty well... the audience could overcome the bad.
But here.... man, this one seems to have no advantage at all, not even Wookie! 😑

Required fields are marked *

Melting Me Softly is the first drama I've ever watched where I'm cringing through entire episodes because it's just that bad. And it's not even bad in a compelling way (eg Moon Lovers), it's just....cringe. I didn't make it past ep 2, but based on the clips I see, it's no better in later episodes.

I think the real problem is the terrible character writing and the fact that, unlike Park Bo-young and Park Hyung-shik, Ji Chang-wook and Won Jin-ah have neither the comic chops nor the chemistry to make it work. They're like the anti-Nokdu, if I was to compare them to a couple from a currently airing drama.

About a third of the way through the series you could see a look of despair creep into the actors faces. By episode 11 it had devolved to a 'Lets just get through this' attitude. That's the point where it stopped being fun to watch.

I'm rewatching 'Be Melodramaic' (melo is my nature) where the writer and director have in-depth discussions about the characters' psychology. For Melting you can imagine the production staff saying "The boss of a 20 year old college girl intern wants to bang her? Sure, let's go with that story line!"

1

Required fields are marked *

In About Time when the leads very astutely let themselves be hit by @sincerelytod in an attempt to end their torture, I cheered. The sorrow on their faces in the next scenes when they had not died, was quite sad. I gave up on Melt Me, but I imagine the despair of the actors is even worse given the little I did see.

For all its faults, Moon Lovers did have a good story and interesting characters - and pretty much every element of why people really get into tragic epics. Where they went wrong was the pacing and production (that godawful music, ARRGH. And those insane mascara-clump-focused close-ups! And the occasionally weird styling).

Happy weekend, everyone! I picked up The Tale of Nokdu a couple weeks ago, tore through all 7 (at the time) episodes in one weekend, finally caught up and I LOVE IT. I freely admit I went in solely for the leads, but didn't expect it to be more than a run-of-the-mill crossdressing sageuk with the sole twist being the genderflip.

I also didn't expect Jang Dong-yoon and Kim So-hyun's chemistry to be this fantastic, Nokdu+Dong-Joo's relationship is old-school swoon levels but with a thankfully late-10s approach to letting a young couple actually behave like people who are attracted to each other. I love the way that entire relationship is written - sure they're still concealing birth secrets from each other, but at least they're frank about there being stuff they can't discuss. And their scenes together always leave me grinning like a big goof, not least the one in ep 11 that Aeng-du barged in on!

I know some people might find the politics a bit heavy (and frankly, I'm wondering just how they're going to fit Nokdu's story around the real-life historical figures and events, please god don't Moonlight Drawn By Clouds this one) but I rather enjoy the dose of seriousness and the shades of grey in the king and the Chancellor (?). Or rather, the way the king can be genuinely kind and genial but also dangerous because he's insecure and unable to take criticism, not to mention flying into fits of rage. (I'm mad at him on his poor queen's behalf, first he stole and tried to kill her baby and then he left her alone for twenty years?)

Oh I also love love love this series!!! However, after the last episode, I am very much inclined to believe that they really will go the MDBC route and throw history out the window - after all, the disclaimer at the beginning of each episode says that ALL the characters and events in the series are entirely made up. But I can't say that it bugs me too much, because I suddenly started to hope that we might actually see Yul Moo, well, dead.

I've had to force myself to interrupt my binge-watch of ARSENAL MILITARY ACADEMY because I have mountains of work to do. I'm currently on episode 27 so here's my spoiler-free review:

This is like a modern MULAN story set in pre-WWI years. Fortunately there isn't much focus on romance or love triangles (yet?). The drama does not aim to be historically accurate, and is more about friendships and patriotism during difficult times.

I don't think Chinese cities in 1911 looked anything like depicted in the drama. It looks way too Western and modern, and the clothes and cars seem borrowed from the 1920s, but who cares. It looks great. Generally it feels like a comic to life, especially our crazy main lead Gu Yanzhen, who's irreverent and flirty as can be. As usual with C-dramas, I find the female characters layered and interesting.

I'm super pleased that the drama is set in a city in the Liadong peninsula before World War I, meaning it chronologically follows where NOKDU FLOWER and MR SUNSHINE left off, except instead of set in occupied Korea this is showing us the Chinese point of view. We hear about Russians and Japanese fighting over areas of China, and there is a general feeling of unrest, but so far the action is limited to intrigues and shootings with Japanese thugs in kimono, or black suits and round hats (lots of them!).

Now, it's time to get to work. I've procrastinated enough. Happy Friday!

Hello Dearest Beanhomies!

Hmm.. Lets see. These past couple of weeks have been. Sheesh. I was almost fired at work and seriously am considering leaving librarianship. I love childrens librarianship but it doesnt love me back. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it, I guess. I had to go in and speak with human resources at one point, it was so bad. They do WAY more than I thought there, but hopefully with them working with me and working with my boss things will turn around. I really do love what I do. But with my last few jobs being so awful I really do wonder if I should do something else?
I LOVE my tiny little apartment. Although last week I was really depressed, I'm in a new city where I dont have any friends. Its different than not having friends in KY. Because I HAVE friends in KY. I just dont spend time with them ever. But I still had the knowledge that if I WANTED to spend time with them I could. Here I'm just lonely.
But, there are always DRAMAS!
I believe I'm going to treat myself to a sandwich from subway and settle in for the rest of the day to get caught up on my INAR rewatch. And handle some boring adulting business--budgeting, I'm hosting my dad for Thanksgiving so I need to start planning, in general get organized! Listen to GOT7's and Jacksons new albums 50 more times a piece. And possibly write something for Family Drama Theme of the month....

The daycare worker is rude to me and ignores the kids on top of it. She filed an "official" complaint that my storytime was too difficult. My boss begged--literally BEGGED her to come back and made me change EVERYTHING about my storytime. I have been told to read 1 book or two board books at the most and I don't know how to fill the rest of the time! My ABC song is too difficult. My counting song is too difficult. My color song is too difficult. I'm flummoxed. It's for 1-4 year olds. So....my sweet spot is currently not so sweet.

This is to your later comment. My best moment last year--I have an ADORABLE little cookie who would come to storytime with her older brother--she was 18 months or so. She would not sit still for a single second of storytime. But, we closed the doors, had some soft toys out towards the back of the room and she played. One day her mom came in and told me that the little girl sang our hello song all week long--while twerking. She'd put her hands on her knees, make her diaper bounce and sing, "bread and butter and marmalade jam!"

isa, so sorry you are being told how to do your storytime, even though you are the one on the frontline. I often get frustrated at the emphasis on early literacy learning in the "profession", when I really want kids to learn to love books first and foremost - that will help get them through the difficulties of learning to read on their own.
During our preschool storytime (ages 2-6), I don't worry about the toddlers rambling around and not paying attention. It's those 3-5 year olds at the front, really engaged with the books that I read for. Unfortunately, it sounds as if your boss (and daycare worker) want you to make it simple enough that even the 2-year-olds sit still (totally not possible).
How frustrating for you. Just know, that you are making a difference in these kids' lives, just by being there and reading and sharing your love of books and reading. Sometimes that's all we can do. Hwaiting!

I am absolutely obsessed with early literacy. Just obsessed with the idea that if they--particularly the kids in the lower socioeconomic/distressed circumstances (the neighborhoods I tend to work in) don't get that basic foundation down now--the odds are that they will never, ever catch up. Its HORRIFYING to me. So, my goal is on the surface to always look like I'm choosing fun books to encourage a love of books and reading every single other aspect of my programming (and not just with the littles) is geared towards early literacy. So it KILLS me that I have been told to get rid of all of those elements.
And its killing me that she hasnt shown up any of the days that I've been there! My manager has been sending me around our system to watch other peoples storytimes and he's been covering and the 2-3 times that Ive been there instead of him since he begged her to come back--she hasnt been there. I KNOW that Im building this up in my head and that as soon as we have our first interaction I'll know how to go on with her. But I keep not having that interaction! FRUSTRATING!
Oh, I always make sure to tell parents, before during and try to take a few minutes after to tell parents (when I have them) that I do NOT expect toddlers to sit still. Thats not how they live. As long as they can hear my voice--they are getting exactly what they need. Vocabulary. Rhyming. Inflection/emotions. They are hearing people have fun and becoming curious.
Sigh sigh sigh

Oh, those twos, even younger, will come for a story and even stay for the whole book. If they like it they may even want you to read it to them another two or three times too, lol. But they are definitely not going to sit for 25 min.
One of my highlights last year was a little boy finding a love for Groovy Joe. He was a couple months shy of two. He'd take the book out of the shelf and sit on the floor with it. He'd study the pages (sometimes upside down) so intently and roar at the Dinosaurs. He would look through I a couple times and then pick the book up and bring it to me. I'd hold my arms out and he'd come into my lap and sit through the whole story and then take the book back to look through it on his own at least one more time. He had issues with his hearing and so not many words yet, but the best Dinosaur roar.

I live in this, my new city, since 2016, and I can barely say I have friends now, even two or three girls I go together to the gym once in a while.... Tomorrow for instance is zumba! 😄

Anyway, yes, it is hard to make new friends, and let alone to make real sincere friends.
On the other hand yea, dramas are a consolation.

Isa! I’m super proud of you! You’re independent, with your own apartment, a job that pays actual bills and a budget! If you’re not a Candy waiting to fulfill her destiny and find her Chaebol I don’t know what is! Lol. I’m sorry you’re lonely where you are, but all our most favorite heroines are at the start. I get the thanksgiving planning thing. Even though I rarely cook, I do like to make huge meals (I feel it’s worth the time and effort if I’m cooking for a ton of people) and Thanksgiving is where I shine. Doing a crab stuffing this year, butternut squash soup, corn and potatoes with my husband making crab legs for our main dish. My sister in law is baking up a few desserts (apple and pumpkin pies and cookies). (Turkey is overrated so we’re skipping that this year!) Hope our menu inspires you! I have a story for the theme of the month as well, but life is crazy again, so I don’t know if I’ll get to it. Good luck writing!

Isa, is it an issue you are having with your boss, or the library patrons? Or something else?

I am assuming you work in a public library. If you love children's librarianship, have you considered being a school librarian?

Hi everyone,

Today, is my daughter’s birthday. She is five years old today. Time goes by quickly. I never thought, I would have a lil girl who I spoiled rotten nor never thought she is very special girl. She is autistic. God must know that I am strong and loving mom for me to have her and her two big brothers. I would do everything and anything for them. 💗💗💗

She have birthday party in her special education classroom. I got her Peppa Pig cupcake cake for her to share with her classmates. Teacher send me cute pics of her on my phone. Tonight, we are celebrating at home with just me, hubby and our kids. Tomorrow, will be at my mother in law to visit her and I am sure she will be spoiled rotten. My parents and sisters send her birthday gifts already.

Therefore, I have not watched much kdramas nor Chinese dramas. The only thing I am watching is A thing called First Love. I am on episode 9. This brings a lot of childhood memories of first crushes, permed hair and braces. OMG.. I have that permed hair and braces and glasses for two freaking years. 😭😂🤣 The dramas bring a lot of my childhood memories. Also, Love Hypnotic, I am on episode 10. This also remind me of old school Chinese dramas with good music and storylines. LOL

Okay, enough... Time to get wrapping her birthday presents. She have tons of play dough to play. SMH. LOL

Have a great weekend. Also, Monday is Veteran’s Day. To all those who serve and protect USA. Thank you for your service.

Greetings beanies! It’s lovely here this week, 60s and sunny. Winter tried to sneak in but has been stalled at least for now. This summer gal can’t bear the ice and snow! Watching My Country and can’t wait for the next eps. Also VIP with Jang Nara is really well done. Lots going on in the lives of the supporting characters... but her acting is so engrossing! PO (Block B) is on so many variety shows these days, he’s absolutely charming! I like The Manager so much and he’s been on the last couple of eps. Plus he hosts Match Survival 1+1, and of course his role in Hotel del Luna.
I know I can say this here without being judged, but I’m watching Faith again probably for the seventh time!! It’s my intro drama to dB, and I’m a Lee Min Ho die hard fan and I love him in this - yielding the police shield from the future and all. Wudalchi power foreveh! ❤️
Happy weekend!

Happy Friday, dear beanies. Tomorrow I have a job interview, but it is for a part-time... I just need more money. Have my dad still very sick.
On a happy note, today I went to the pet store and looked for the small birds like canaries, and I will buy one. I need the cage first, of course... there are good sales on Amazon. But anyway, since I am not allowed to have dogs or cats where I live, because the owner doesn't allow it, at least I can have a small animal on a cage, like a bird or a hamster, and I will most likely get both... so I am happy about it☺
I never knew birds were so funny, but my therapist, who is also a k-drama addict and an IU lover, has a small bird and is always sending me videos, 'cause you know, I am the birds' aunt. (My therapist used to be my best friend in college, so we know each other for 15 years, that's why)...
Anyway.... again, I am happy about adopting my own bird. I will tell more about it when I get it 😉

Best friend/therapist sounds like a good k-drama story line. Does the pet shop owner look like Park Bo-gum? I see a potential 16 episode romcom series out of it.

My husband’s cousin is a collector of birds. He trains them and they do amazing things! It’s funny what he does with them.
He has two that jump over one another on command! It looks so funny! I hope you enjoy your pet—but if you’re like him, if may end up starting an obsession!
