Happy weekend Beanies!

Last Saturday I went to a yearly local comic con with my friend, and was a bit embarrassed there by how much Hallyu has influenced my life. I was drawn to this comic con years ago because it is mainly western media oriented, with only a slice of Japanese and Korean here and there. This year I spent a mini fortune on snacks, and most of them were Pockys (@sicarius COCONUT POCKYS!!!). While I certainly enjoyed myself and my purchases, I am a bit sad that I feel lukewarm about the western oriented merchandise now, compared to how I did during my pre-Hallyu days. The western media are part of my roots and make up my childhood, which I neglected during my Hallyu discovery. It has been harder than I thought to press play or turn the first page of the western stories I have been meaning to catch up on all those years.

It might change tomorrow evening for the better. My friend and I are throwing our very belated birthday party for our mutual friends at my place, and the wish list was filled with western books and movies (they are not into Korean stuff). I dread rearranging my bookshelves afterwards, because that poor thing might finally collapse! :P

This week was also the first without a job, but I felt not ready to do much yet. This is perfectly normal, because your whole schedule gets turned upside down all of a sudden. As my busy October agenda is ending, I preferred to focus on all the party preparations and appointments I still had to take care of this month during this week, and I spend some quality time with my god siblings. I also had half a room that still needed some thorough cleaning, after moving all my furniture around a few weeks ago. I had forgotten however, about the one month gap between my recruitment and my first day on the job back in April, and all the spring cleaning and job paper work I had done in advance to spare myself from this sad fate. Hurray for me, Boohoo for my memory! :P

Another reason why I did not do much job hunting was Extraordinary You. I was asking for some time to watch a K-drama live, and I got an obsession instead. I hope I can invest as much time and passion in my cover letters from next week onwards, as I did in my fan wall posts and comments this week. :P I even wrote my horror entry of the month about this K-drama and it got published today! :P I do hope that I can watch episode 8 soon and distract myself with job hunting until episode 9 airs. Aish, this will be one painful hangover next week. ;)

I understand your difficulty. It was fantasy stories like Harry Potter or epic re-tellings of swords, knights and kings (the like) that shaped my mind and imagination in my childhood. I still love all these things, but with the access and English-translated bits from other forms of entertainment (asian dramas, variety shows, etc.) I've lost touch with a lot of stuff. I want to be able to balance it, yet although the love and interest remains but the same passion isn't there.

I just hope and perhaps know that one day it'll come back and maybe I can divide my time and attention better.

Hi Everyone! Hope everyone had a relatively good week. Happy Friday!

So I was thinking, I recently heard about these discord servers and I was wondering why dramabeans doesn’t have one! Anyways, back to dramas, anyone have any recommendations? I am in the mood for a family drama or perhaps a food historical drama (recently got really into the Chinese ones)

My personal recommendations for sageuks: Rookie Historian Goo Haeryung, Splash Splash Love, and the all-time classic: The Moon Embracing the Sun (feat. gorgeous GORGEOUS Kim Soohyun and his lovely deep voice 😍)

My absolute favorite, regardless of genre and country, is the Chinese historical drama The Story of Ming Lan. I would also recommend Queen for Seven Days, Sungkyunkwan Scandal, and The Hymn of Death.

@hyperbutterfly89
I was just going to comment about The Story of Ming Lan! I second this recommendation :)

HAPPY FRIDAY EVERYONE!! I’ve been ill the whole week with a nasty viral infection :( And to make things worse, whatever medication my doctor prescribed to me must not have agreed with me, because I ended up barely sleeping at all for the last 4 nights. I finally ditched my medicine and managed to sleep through the night, but when I woke up today to go to college, I was completely and utterly exhausted since I no longer had the medicine to keep me awake and functioning throughout the day!

TL;DR: it’s been a loooong and tiring week :(

On the bright side though, I finally started driving lessons and I’m spending the weekend celebrating with my friends who celebrate Diwali! I hope everyone who celebrates has a happy and fulfilling festive period ♥️

Thank you for the well wish ♡ I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

I didn't catch up with any drama during week, having rely too much on artificial lighting at work in autumn/winter season make my eyes dry and itchy and I couldn't muster any strengh too turn on TV, mostly listened to podcasts while drawing or reading books.

Hi Everyone! ..... I hope you are all doing well today.

Secret Boutique - I'm so intrigued by the relationship between Jenny Jang and her husband Jung-hyuk. What exists between them is not your typical marriage but it's something more than close friends.

Melting Me Softly - Who is this Nikolai that Dong-chan keeps mentioniong?? Did I miss something?

Pegasus Market - I've been wondering if Manager Moon Seok-goo's mom is really alive or not. Sometimes I think she's not.

Vagabond - I'm very curious about Edward Park. You think he's going to do one thing and then he kind of does another.

My Country - Nothing good can come from that sad relationship between Sun-ho and his father. ..... On a different note, what a treat it is to see Jang Hyuk as Yi Bang-won! Fantastic!

That's all for now. Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

@korfan I found it! In episode 2, in the morning of Cultural Performance, Seok Goo was rushing out the door. Mom called him back to take his packed lunch. He went to kitchen, put a lit on the box and headed to the door. Kitchen was a mess as indication that mom was cooking.
So I thought, okay, mom is cooking and therefore she is not dead. Plus, if she is an imagination, I don't think that is the time for Seok Goo to "summon" mom.
I had the thought that she's dead too. Maybe because we always see just the two of them talking at home and there are many dramas recently that kind of like that, so we thought she's dead. 😅
Okay, on to episode 6!

Hello and happy Friday everyone!

It's currently my sembreak. I've been a reader of Dramabeans for a long time but I only decided to create an account just a few minutes ago out of boredom haha!

The sem that finished was very tough for me. Academics wasn't the only thing that was bothering me as I also have a sport I know to myself I'm not interested in anymore like before. Recently, a major tournament concluded and I was very disappointed with my performance. Yesterday, however, I got my report card for the sem and I was pretty satisfied with what I got so I guess that helped. Still, I admit the pass 5 months was hard, in and out of acads.

I'm currently taking my time to rest and heal my mental being by getting sleep and catching up on some dramas I've missed. I caught up with Vagabond and Pegasus Market. I'm still thinking which to start next: When the Camillia Blooms, Tale of Nokdu or Extraordinary You.

I would love to hear your thoughts (and be friends since I'm new here haha)!

Hello all:
Just ordered a weighted blanket. Hoping it will help my son and me sleep. Got a recommendation for a sleep doctor at the hospital from my wonderful dentist. Will see how that goes. So much money spent on health when one gets older.

Dramas:
Loving Catch that Ghost. So far, not a chaebol boardroom in sight. The main characters are fun and i love the non-manliness of our male hero. But yeah he's manly when he has to be,

Widow Kim: How can i love the romance part so much and yet skim past the scheming when i generally like scheming? I saw in an interview that the part of the second lead was made up by the filmmakers. I thought they wedged him in nicely but wow, they kinda over-wedged. Ah well.

Extraordinary You -- I love Baek Kyung but yeah, he is the lead of his own life so our heroine should be the lead in her own life. Did that green light suck our heroine, her first lead, and mommie dearest between story universes? Is sadistic writer reusing his characters in some ways? Do Hwa is adorable! Nam Joo is okay but he doesn't have the charisma i feel he should.

Miss Lee: The "realism" of this drama is amazing. I applaud the writer for having the strength and the courage not to fall into drama tropes. We're in a do or die situation and we have people who are trying against all odds to believe there is hope and evil schemers who are trying to destroy them. And honestly in all this depressing atmosphere, the entire story is not nihilistic at all. I'm actually believing our heroes will win and the bad guys will get a great fall.

Pegasus Market: So much fun, so much silliness. I especially love the head villain. He knows how to play eye-brow-raising evil in a totally campy way. Loved his journey through the security system.

Vagabond... ah, gee, i couldn't watch it to the end.

Melting me softly...Gonna try to finish it.

Camellia.. i have to see this week's episode.

Jdramas: In love with an ugly girl -- Dang! when pretty second lead women see an ugly girl with a hottie they certainly get nasty. Shades of GangnamID

Junichi: Homeless guy in successive sexual encounters with various women. I worry for Junichi. There is something not quite right with him. Did he perhaps accidentally fall because he was mentally-impaired and tried to fly or did he try to kill himself? His first words about whether a dog was being hanged speaks volumes. Did he come from an abusive environment or is he emotionally depleted? Will this drama depict him as a holy fool who helps improves the lives of women he meets? Does he throw women aside or do they use and discard him without realizing his woundedness? Or do he and his sexual partners heal and/or destroy each other? Like i said, i worry for him.

Thai Drama: Starting to watch Game of Love because someone raved about it.

That's about it. Have a great weekend, all.

I'm really excited about Parasite too! I very much enjoyed Snowpiercer and Okja, from the same director... There's also a movie from another director that seems to take on the same subject matter, called Burning, but it's from last year and I can't find it anywhere... Does anybody know which streaming service has it in Europe?

Burning was fun. I think i saw it on netflix but it might be online somewhere. Yep, it's the year of dealing with wealth v poverty. Burning, Joker, Strangers from Hell, Parasite. Not sure the 1% even cares or takes notice. But the discussion is out there.

Required fields are marked *

Watched Joker last week and liked it - great colour work, photography, and Joaquin Phoenix is amazing- but came out of the cinema with a bad feeling, it's such a nihilistic movie. I guess that's the reason why I'm skipping Strangers from hell, although I like Siwan so much.

The ones i ordered have wood pellets and/or glass beads and supposedly help you feel like you're having a long sustained hug. I'll see how it helps.

I should try one if it makes you feel like that.

my daughter bought a 10# one, she loves it... better than having her use all the extra blankets in my house to make her coverings heavy...

for her, it's a comfort thing. very effective!

I'm not sure how the numbering system works. They say you should buy one that is some percentage of your weight but i dunno. The ones i got said 15 lbs so.... i just went with that.

Happy Friday Beanies!

Random but I was reading the post from 2017 when they changed the look of the site and I realised I really miss the Javabeans and Girlfriday podcasts. 😢

Feels like a real Friday today because I have no school and no work AND I'm hanging out with my friend today. Not a bad way to end reading week before the madness descends again

Hi Open Thread-ers! Autumn has set in and it's been raining the last few days (had several tornadoes too, but all is well). I've been watching The Untamed every day, and there's been two consecutive whole episodes where Lan Zhan is nowhere to be found and I feel cheated. LOL! My Country is also on the docket today, so with both shows now on Netflix, downloading them and watching them pretty much anytime I want will be nice!

The cutest thing that happened this week was at my daughter's school, through the lens of a kdrama-watching mom, me. I was having lunch in the lunchroom with my daughter, and math genius has been sitting across from us for a few weeks now, so I give you:

The Math Genius and my Daughter, The Gaming episode:

(Math Genius, daughter and a 7th grade gamer are sitting at lunch playing a computer game together on-line. MG is across from my daughter, the other gamer is on the same side of the table as MG, but further down. I'm next to the daughter watching her screen. They are playing Roblox.)

7th grade gamer: Who's the killer?

Daughter: *chirping sweetly* I am!

7th grade gamer: No you're not. Who's the killer?

Daughter: *chirping sweetly, but more emphatically* I AM!!!

7th grade gamer: MG, is she really???

MG: *eyes not leaving the screen* She is. And she's about to kill you.

7th grade gamer: Oh man! I died!

Daughter: I told you I was the killer. *now, chasing MG through the game*

Daughter: My computer keeps lagging, I can't tell if I killed you.

MG: You did. There's another guy in this other room. *Flips around screen for me to see*

Daughter: I don't know where he is.

Me: He just went out to the hallway.

MG: Here, let me show you. You only have 30 seconds left!

Daughter: Oh, there he is...DIE! My computer keeps lagging. Is he dead yet?

MG: He's dead, you won! *flashes the cutest smile ever*

Moral of the Story: I normally wouldn't condone 1st person killer games, but how cute is MG helping out my daughter win a game???

2nd Moral: If daughter bonding with MG over a video game is what gets these two together, I'M. ALL. IN.

3rd Moral: Stay safe and dry this weekend Beanies!

Oh and I heard Netflix subs for The Untamed are horrid. I can't stress how important it is to have good if not decent subs!

I watched ep 16 today on Netflix. I can’t tell if it was good Subbing because the ever annoying Wens were talking and I tend to ignore what they’re saying!

I am new to dramabeans and recently decided to watch dramas live but it's been hard. I've to try to catch up to every show in my list. Since I am new to this I made the mistake of having 7 shows on the list. I thought two episodes a day wouldn't be that hard right? Turns out it is even though I am used to watching more at a time if needed. To top it of me and my sister binge watched hwarang and she insisted on watching 5 episodes a day. Since I just finished my exam I decided to watch something with her. I introduced her to kdramas at the same time as I got introduced and now I have created a monster. She hates cliffhangers, and I am too stubborn to let her watch something alone that we started watching together. Should I stop live watching dramas I wonder. I'll think I'll give this thing some more time and keep the list shorter, hopefully. So many dramas so little time.

Welcome to Dramabeans where sleep is overrated and 24 hours isn't enough!

Thank you. And true. I wish we needed only 4 hours of sleep. Despite all this waiting for the next episode of my favorite shows isn't exactly easy either. Liking 'Extraordinary you' and 'The tale of Nokdu' so far.

Who needs sleep when there are so many dramas to watch? Bags under the eyes are the new fashion statement anyway so we're good.
