Oh, joy of joys, beanies!! This weekend I met two real life kdrama fans! It is the first time in my four years of watching that I met others, and it was such a pleasure to sit and discuss dramas and not hear the sighs of resigned (but loving) tolerance- which is how typically how family and friends greet my segues into all things Korean.

Congratulations! That is indeed one of the happiest moments in a kdrama addict's life. :)
It happened to me a few times, and it was all great until they started raving about dramas I consider trainwrecks. I would then diplomatically switch to talking about another drama LOL.

Thank you!❤it really is so much fun to meet and share experiences with a fan as jazzed as you feel. We were very diplomatic- I respected his choice of Super Junior and he did not question my love of BigBang

Oof I have a classmate who hasn’t watched a lot of dramas, but somehow thinks DOTS is one of the best ever. And then there’s me, who couldn’t even finish it because of how cliched and cringe I found it (no offence to any fellow DOTS lovers, the OST is amazing). Let’s just say there’s a lot of smiling and nodding on my part 😅

Sounds like me and when my friend was gushing over Heirs. And I was like ?!? Haha. I told her I could recommend OTHER dramas to her but she seemed so happy about it after a while I just smiled along. Lol.
To each their own. World would be too boring if we all liked the same things.

Same 😂 my only teo real life friends love romcoms more than the slice of life dramas i like. So even if we share the love forkdramas, we can't talk about anything common mostly.

Hahaha. I watched DOTS. I liked it. It was nice. But that's about it. There were/are no lingering feelings or moments where I am so happy watching it or anything. Idk where you're from but there's a drama "hamsafar" (which roughly translated means life companion) from where I am which was a domestic and international hit, kinda similar to the impact that DOTS had. So anyway that drama was nothing spectacular but it had pretty leads (and money/glamour) and people loved- no love it! Its severely overrated like DOTS (No offence to anyone) so I always say that DOTS is the Humsafar of Korea😂. Nice and good but not fabulous and extremely overrated.

Just realized I kinda went little off topic here but oh well 🤷‍♀️

0

Don't worry, I've met several people who enjoyed DOTS and honestly I did enjoy the secondary romance, and bromance! The OST is pretty good too.

I just lost patience with the story and the female lead somewhere around ep. 9 (was it when she made the car fall over the cliff into the sea? I don't even remember the details. It was so silly and over the top!)

2

Omg that's so accurate! DOTS is the humsafar of SK. Humsafar has all those tropes we've seen since the 80s & 90s but it has extraordinarily pretty ppl.... & a great ost.... But that one slip by Hadiqa Kiani still bothers me.

2

@maybemaknae hahaha what slip? I didn't notice!!

0

First my bad since its QB not Hadiqa.... But its the "Kajal daro.... Kurkura surma saha na jaye" It's karkara surma as in gritty, not kurkura that means crispy. I always cringe when I hear kurkura.

2

Hahaha never noticed before but now everyone I hear the song I'll remember this😂

1

Lol I won't apologise 😂😂😂 too bad for your re-listening experience 😆

2

Oh yes it’s awesome. I have a KakaoTalk group of friends I made from here and we gush and squee; but they’ve also kept me sane on bad days and support me. Kdrama watching friends are special, they really are. Congrats for finding them!

Lucky you! ♥️ I only really have one good friend irl who will really sit down and discuss dramas with me, and she is my solace. In fact, I was supposed to meet her today and discuss Camellia (and convince her to watch Extraordinary You) but our plans fell through and we missed each other :(

My sister is a kpop fan, so she’s no stranger to Korean entertainment, and my mum is slowly opening up to watching some dramas thanks to Netflix. My dad, on the other hand, is quite sceptical and a little snobby when it comes to Korean content, unfortunately 🙃 Can’t win them all, I guess!

i can mostly think of variety shows like Grandpa over flowers and Masked Singers...and movies like the Lake House. The only dramas i can think of were Somewhere Between and the good doctor. Maybe there were less than i thought but i remember looking at certain American movies and thinking..."wasn't this a korean drama before?"

3

I was told that if I wanted to watch foreign dramas then why don't I watch the Americans. It's such a chore explaining people again and again how vastly different they are. People are just irked by the thought of us watching dramas in a language we don't understand with the "hugely difficult task of reading subtitles "

1

Subtitles are difficult? I can't watch American or British shows without subtitles anymore!

it probably doesn't help that I can't hear all the mumbling with my bad hearing

5

I don’t understand the problem with subtitles 🤷‍♀️
I’ve got to the point I don’t even realise I’m reading them. Had lots of practice watching Inspector Rex.

Recently, after I finished watching the last Extraordinary You episode, I was so full of gushing, but no one to gush to. I have been trying to get my husband to watch it with me but he only watches them after a lot of persuading (nagging) from me and he hasn't read any manhwas, so he doesn't get it..sigh..

I know what you mean. This week during our lunch walk, I tried to explain why I loved Pegasus Market to my friend - and she said not a word.....

Then again, maybe it's because the last one I talked about was Strangers from Hell and how people were killing residents and then eating them.... At that point she said "NO MORE"
At least we have our fellow beanies here!

So, should I be telling her about a drama about a high school girl who discovers she is part of a comic book and wants to decide her own fate?
Or maybe about a museum art director who is really a kpop fan on the side and falls in love with her boss, who, as it turns out lived in her house as a child when he was orphaned?
Or all the shows where they switch bodies with ghosts and/or each other?

Actually, they are all quite weird sounding to the un-initiated but that is why I LOVE them!

3

@stpauligurl
I think comic book high school girl and museum art director are fine choices. I'll add in "pretty" and "beautiful" and emphasize on that. ;)

1

Lol. Yes! Try telling them about extraordinary you! I was telling one of my friends about it and she thought it was really interesting.
I don’t comment a ton on dramabeans but I’m so grateful for this site. I’m test to meet any irl fans but reading how you all react to shows I love warms my heart. I love that this community is one of most respectful and most positive places on the internet. Beanies are the best!

Happy Friday everyone. This is my free day before another working weekend and I decided to go crazy and tidy my closet(s). But while watching dramas of course, I'm not that crazy ;)
I admit change of season get to me every time and I was bit down and let a lot of things go, but I don't if it's power of Ashwaganda supplement or what, but I feel better now, wanting to clean my room is always a first sign of getting better, isn't it :)

Bravo! I’m in the midst of a deep clean myself. What started as a simple home office tidying ended up with half the house in disarray as I reorganized my son’s room and my office. Piles of books and miscellaneous flotsam are piled on the sofa. But my desk drawers are *ting* *ting* sparkling!

Like you, the change of seasons along with lack of sunshine dulled my happiness for weeks. Cleaning—even if it’s just the surface in front of me—is often a shot in the arm for me.

Hello Beanies!
Hope your week was good 😊
Mine was filled with ups and downs as I try to get used to being stuck at home alone for most of the day.

Some people may think it’s amazing since it’s paid leave and free time, but I think I need friends around me to talk to- I hate being alone. Mostly. Though I’m not a party animal at all. I just like having a meal with good friends and laughing and chatting. I’m not so good with strangers though. I hate small talk, I’m so awkward.

So what about you Beanies? You live for alone time, or like me, crave human contact?

Ps. I really wish Nokdu had 2 episodes this week. I love how strong the women are and yet how they aren’t caricatures or out of place in Joseon.

Pps. I really need a cracky drama that’s fully aired to binge on. I heard Grateful Family is good? I’ve seen clips and the female lead seems so badass! In a non Candy and totally kickass mildly b*tchy way. (Cuz sometimes I want to let my inner b*tch out too 😝) Anyone watched?

15

reply

Required fields are marked *

There are no wrong answers to this, it really depends on who and where you are in life- my work and family require an overwhelming amount of human contact, so I am always excited to go off and enjoy time alone. My partner however, telecommutes, and is the opposite- he's happiest when he's surrounded by an entourage (kids, dogs, strangers....anything works!)

Btw, the storyline of Graceful Family reminds me a bit of Shining Legacy, where its the world against our heroine! Definitely give it a try!,

Yeah I have a friend like that and we get along like a house on fire but he needs his own space too so sometimes I’m not sure if I’m being an inconvenience by constantly being the one seeking him out, since I’m clearly the more extroverted one by comparison.

Probably not. I love my friends and spending time with them. If I'm not in the mood to socialize I just tell them.

3

Required fields are marked *

I think it’s good for an introvert to have a few good extrovert friends. I tend to feel grateful when my extroverts reach out to me. If an introvert is a plant, I feel like their good extrovert friend is like getting watered at the perfect time. I can’t speak for your friend, but if you understand and respect their need for solitude, I think your reaching out would be welcomed.

2

Required fields are marked *

I was told once that I was an introvert who was raised to be an extrovert (#6 in a family of 9 kids) which explained why I'm comfortable making chit chat in the coffee room. But MUST have my time alone at night and on the weekends.
Which is easy as I live alone - but there are times I need to be around people - but only at my own speed.
We all have different needs for human interaction, but what is important is to recognize them, and have people in our lives that respect what we want and need.
@michykdrama I hope you find a way to meet all of your needs - and get in a few good dramas.

How is your back feeling these days? Are you still laid up or walking around now? Do you feel better?

Thanks @stpauligurl! 😁 I’m slowly but surely getting better. Although it’s more slow these days. Have been walking around for a while but not allowed to bend or lift heavy things or climb stairs. The last one because I somehow developed knee swelling. But I did get the Husband to bring me and the Boy out for ice cream- but I was super tired after and lay in bed for an hour. Haha. But it was worth it 😊

Hope you have a restful and drama filled weekend! ❤️

So glad to hear you are healing. Years ago I had an abdominal surgery that required I lay in bed or not lift anything heavier than a loaf of bread (I think it was) and I about went out of my mind from boredom. One can only sleep so much.
At the time I tried watching the first season of Arrested Development and laughed so much that I finally had to stop because it was so painful.
yes it can be hard to heal - but it sounds like the Husband and Boy are there for you. Yeah!
How is the Boy doing with this now that I think of it. You were so worried about him before the surgery...

1

@michykdrama, you should totally watch Graceful Family. I hate makjang-filled dramas and this is full-on makjang but I loved every second of this drama. They did it right imo. And honestly I think it would be the best drama to watch when you are alone. You can laugh your head off and gasp dramatically at Fish Funerals without fear of judgment.

I live for alone time because I am an introvert but I also love the deep conversations I have with people I have allowed into my space. It doesn't have to be anything world-changing but it just can't be "Weather's good today huh?". Small talk makes my eye twitch. K-drama talk is totally acceptable. I mean what's more acceptable than squeeing over a very girly guy's abs(ala Nokdu) with people that are feeling the EXACT same way as you.

I've been....alive. Starting to delurk now that my life doesn't resemble the beginning of the Candy-centric k drama: Lost her job, home, school. Seems the k drama gods thought I'd enjoy living life like the typical Candy. (No, I did not). But things are looking up now so yay! Now if I could only find out about my long lost grandmother who left me a fortune and her business to run that'd be awesome.

Aww I’m sorry about the downs you experienced during the week. I hope next week is better!

I’m very introverted, so I like being alone, but I also love being around people I’m close to. Maybe I’ll grab some coffee with a friend and chat for a few hours before retreating into the quiet comfort of home! My sister on the other hand thrives off of company and going out and being active, so it’s really a question of what makes you happy and comfortable.

I hear you on the small talk, though. It’s just so painful and cringey sometimes!

I’m not watching Graceful Family, so I can’t say, but by far the CRACKIEST drama I’ve ever watched was Flower Boy Ramyun Shop. It was so weird to me, I don’t even know if I can recommend it. I just always remember it as that one wacky drama I somehow finished 😂

I am really weird as I am all about my solitude. I live with my 2 sisters, who I do love, but I fantasize so often about living alone. My ideal would have 5 days being all alone with nothing but myself and my pets and then spend the other 2 days with family and friends.

As for Graceful Family I've only seen the first episode but it already hooked me. And that was because the FL was kickass, and from what I hear she continues that way through the rest of the drama.

For me, the times I've had health issues and been home alone during the day, I found that just getting through the day occupied me enough, without having other people around. i.e. managing to take a shower, eat some food, and sleep a lot.

In regular life, I think I never got past one of the childhood stages of development called side-by-side play or parallel play. I'm perfectly happy when there are other people around, but we all do our own thing mostly rather than chatting a lot, aside from mealtime, etc.

I really hope you're able to be physically and socially comfortable during your time at home. Did you watch Melo is My Nature? That was pretty amazing!

I too have been making adjustment as I took the reference my company offered after 23 years with them as I was so burnt out and tired. So for the last 2 1/2 months I have been at home just chilling and some days I do not interact with others. I have always enjoyed alone time but have also enjoyed having a meal with small groups of friends. Good thing there has been a slew of new dramas to keep me busy while I start to declutter and do some cleaning. The weather here in Texas has been very hot over the summer which kept me indoors mostly and it is just starting to cool down which will get me outside more. Currently watching
The Great Show - just concluded
the flower Crew
Nokdu Take
The Graceful/Elegant Family - just concluded
When the Camelia Bloom
Miss Lee
Running mates - trying to catch up from E5
Vagabond
Pergasus Market
beautiful Iove, wonderful life
Melting me softly

Its Straight give and take. You want something then you have to pay something. Worse work environment. Unfair. But that's human world for you. Fairness and equality are just the buzzwords of face masks. reality is harsh and cruel.

Nearly every aspect of K-pop is functional, intended to satisfy the market rather than fulfill some deep artistic or Political urge.
trends are scientifically tracked to see whether a potential boy band should debut as gangster tough “beast-dols” or feminine, lip-glossed “flower boys.”
standard K-pop trainee contracts now include seven to twelve non-negotiable surgeries from double eyelid surgery— which involves cutting the eyelid skin to create a crease—to jaw shaving. Some boy-banders undergo leg breaking surgery to add a few centimeters of height while others, bending to the Korean aesthetic of skinniness as the height of attractiveness, inject poison into their necks in order to atrophy their muscles. Sure, it’s hard keeping your head upright with those muscle – free, delicate, swan-necks, the manager supposed, but a bit of physiotherapy goes a long way.
No music industry in the world invests so much in their singers before they debut; recoup is simply the price of business. Only when entertainers pay off their debt, returning what was spent on training, housing, and feeding them during their incubee days, do they start to earn a living as pop stars, though industry percentages are notoriously stingy.
You import Western music, Oh explained, Koreanise it, localising it to such a high standard that people in the West hear the music as fresh and unique, and quickly re-import it back to their countries.

Its easy to say - nonvoters are irresponsible, have no accountability, lack sense of duty and blah blah blah. Blurt out any no. of regressive views you can bigots.

When you have only 2 options and both of them are factually almost same then it becomes a game of dice. That's why you need an alternative and that's why Non-voting is a significnt form of protest. Well, bigots won't understand who consider politics injurious while living in a world governed by the policies made by the ruling party.

I wonder if the plastic surgeries filled entertainment industry affects badly on Korean society's standard of beauty that they are perceived. When my daughter was younger than ten, there was a Korean girl in her school who said that she cannot wait to have a cosmetic surgery done once she reaches certain age. My daughter was so shocked. She thought that the girl is pretty but I do know that her look is not a typical of so called Korean beauty. I must say that I can see some promising beauty in the girl and find very sad that she cannot see that and she will eventually feel that she is inadequate for her look as she grows up. I feel very sad and at the same time quite angry that the society( not only Korean society but everywhere) feeds all those nonsense beauty standards to vulnerable young people.
I see some Korean girls that are apparently manufactured by plastic surgeons on the street. Some times it is so apparent and though she thinks that she achieved the beauty, I find her look a bit off and pain to look at. I mentioned this incidents to my son and he
said," Korean men do not mind dating those girls knowing she has done PS as far as they think that those girls are pretty.'
By the way, we can tell if a girl is Korean or not on the streets , cause that their skins are so pale but while some are genuinely pale, other looks artificially pale. I often wonder if this skin whitening method can damage their skins.
Those phenomenon are in my opinion quite frightening. I do not consider this PS obsession in Korean society an isolated symptom but it derived from their psyche.

When I watch Extraordinary You, I find main cast of male students are exceptionally tall. I wonder if someday short male with their exceptional acting skills wont be able to get a role.

I took a friend of mine, we went only for one hour, but we've got spoiled by nature. It was her first time and she loved it. I had my baby in baby holder so I couldn't pick them up, I was like "Look, this is this one and there's another one, could you cut it for me, please" "Where? I don't see any?" " Look there, you walked through it!... Next to your leg, right one!... In front of you!" and so on. I have to cut them and dry them and we'll have a blast. It was nice to be complimented from somebody much older than me "Everytime I'm with you I learn new things. I always try to make the food you make and it's simple and delicious." Who doesn't like to be complimented? It's such a long time somebody did it...

Watching the previews on repeat and crying is the method I'm implementing right now, although I can't claim it works! 😂

Salute! *cue: DoTs soundtrack*

I am like you. I am zombie YY, wandering aimlessly till next week comes along, and I can see my favourite scenes and feel my heart flutter over over:

Range of fluttering heartbeats, on a scale of 0 to 10, 10 for Emergency, 0 for Flat (Read: Dead from Indifference)

1. Kyung sobbing. 10/10
2. Kyung scowling. 10/10
3. Kyung kicking water in a jealous rage. So. Hot. Om, my gosh. 100/10
4. Kyung smirking. 10/10
5. Kyung smiling tenderly. That preview. Omigod. So. Hot. 10000/10
6. Sweet Haru tugging the straps of Danoh's backpack. Omg. I stopped breathing. 10/1₩
7. Haru saying, You. Why does he keep doing that? And why does my heart keep fluttering when he does that? 100/10
8. Candy Juda still in love with her errand girl tormenter. 100/10. So.....romantic....and soooo heartbreaking. Some things never change. Even off stage.

I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH. BRING IT ON, WRITER.

One takeaway I got from this week was that our love and appreciation should be as loud as the hate. Reading all those posts about Sulli (May she RIP), made me realize that mostly women and also some men understood her plight and never felt that she did any wrong. But maybe the hate overpowered, it was just too loud to hear that she was still loved. If you know anybody suffering near you please let them know that their efforts are appreciated, their hardwork will bear its fruits and they are not alone and extremely loved by everyone even if they can't feel it for themselves.

Yes to that.

And people realizing that words hurt and how one says something is as important as what one says. If you wouldn’t say it to the person’s face then maybe you need to say it another way, or not at all.

RIP Sulli.

Happy Friday beanies. Reading week is coming up next week and I'm ridiculously excited. I don't want to do anything dramatic or exciting. I'm just looking forward to not waking up at 6am for class. No one has given me a clear answer for why we need to do anything before 12pm so my deep and consuming hatred for mornings will continue for now.

I don’t usually leave comments in Open Threads, but considering this week was so horrible m I just wanted to lope ave a little love and encouragement on here for everyone:

Remember that you matter.
Remember that you are loved ♥️♥️

You are someone’s mother, sister, niece, aunt, father, brother, nephew, uncle.... You are known.
You are important.
You were created to be in this world for a reason
You have a place in this world and don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise

On Monday morning I had a verbal OMG moment when I opened the Korea Herald website to read that Sulli, 25, had died of an apparent suicide. It shocked the entire Korean entertainment community. She was a free spirit, successful actor and singer, who was constantly under attack from malicious commentators. No one will know what crossed her mind to end her life. She had been open about her depression, anxiety and panic disorders. She had just released a new album and was set to star in a new Netflix series. It appears that her pubic success masked her private pain.

The tragic irony is that her last role was a cameo for her good friend IU in Hotel de Luna, a show whose theme was spiritual healing so one can move on to the next life. Unbelievably, IU and Krystal (Sulli's band mate) were viciously attacked on-line for not posting condolences on their social media accounts. But both IU and Krystal spent three days in private mourning at the funeral hall. It is unbelievable that some people were upset on how others should mourn the loss of the family or friends.

There is a growing anger in South Korea against malicious trolls. The legislature may pass a bill enforcing stricter laws against defamation and harmful comments. But it will probably not stop the cruelty, lack of empathy or common sense that is social media's cancer.

The sad and ironic part of it is that Sulli experienced horrible cyberbullying and toxicity. But then people turn around and throw that same toxicity at those mourning her right after what happened. It's a sad world that even those mourning the deepest can't have a moment of peace.

RIP Sulli.

Old drama alert! If you have US Netflix and haven't checked lately you may be in for a treat. Last week they suddenly obtained a huge amount of back catalog dramas, I think it's stuff DramaFever used to have, at least mostly. It now has: Signal, The K2, Chicago Typewriter, 20 Again (as Second 20s), Tunnel, Another O Hae Young (as Another Miss Oh), Answer Me/Rely 1994 and 1997, Cheese in the Trap, the Liar and His Lover. There's other back catalog it had added in the last month or so but I routinely search for K-drama on the app and all those seem like they're new within the last week or so. Of course it's also got new release shows and actually right now it's got several at the same time (Vagabond, When the Camellia Blooms, My Country, the Lie Inside) which is new.
If you want something spooky because of it being October my rec is: Chicago Typewriter which is about a writer who's haunted by the ghost of his best friend from his past life when he was a Korean resistance fighter. (repost due to bad html)

I watched The Chicago Typewriter this sommer and really, really loved it. It made me obsess, and laugh and cry like crazy, totally recommend it! And Yoo Ah In is an amazing actor, this drama got me looking for his other work and he always manages to disapear into the roles...
I've also been waiting for Signal on Netflix! Got my partner to promise to watch it me, it's the first kdrama I get him to watch since Kingdom, so I'm kind of hoping to get him hooked on kdrama, it's a far shot, though,*sigh*

Thanks for sharing this! I find it really hard to search for Kdrama on Netflix. I usually search "korean" but I've noticed that with this search term a lot or kdrama's are not actually shown to me.... and a lot of things that do show up are not even korean shows lol.

The good thing is, Netflix categorizes all genres under a specific number. 67879 is for korean dramas, you can see them here:
https://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/67879

Weirdly when I search the number it hardly shows me 10 to 12 kdramas but your link shows all of them.

On netflix-code.com you can find a list with the codes Netflix is using. I haven't found a code for c and j drama, only for Asian movies and dramas: 108662. Just exchange the number in the URL and you should see more dramas.

0

Yes thanks I just found that out. Seems like this code is more specifically for romantic kdramas as they are the ones I can see and they further say that there are more codes for sub genres.

0

Yes, and you have your Another Oh Hae Young... 😃

Happy Friday everybody!! Finally, a tiring week is coming to an end. I'm sad that we missed out on an episode of Nokdu this week, but Extraordinary You made that up for me. I think it's going to go down as one of my favourites.

My top 5 most-listened to OSTs of this year (in no particular order):

1. Moments - Christopher (A Moment at Eighteen)
2. All About You - Taeyeon (Hotel Del Luna)
3. Fly High - Sandeul (The Secret Life of My Secretary)
4. Your Shampoo Scent in Flowers - Jang Beom June (Be Melodramatic)
5. If I Could Be By Your Side - Sung Sikyung (The Crowned Clown)

What are some of your 2019 standout OSTs, Beanies?

In no particular order either, and very much related to the dramas I enjoyed the most:

1. BIRD, BIRD, BLUEBIRD - Forestella (Nokdu Flower). Soul-stirring.
3. RUN - Yook Joong Wan (Special Labor Inspector Jo). Fun like the drama.
3. MY DREAM - Yoonmirae (Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung). Very soothing. It grew on me.

Usually I have a long playlist by the end of the year, but this year I have none! I find myself listening to older soundtracks like CHUNO a lot.

I Love the Forestella song from Nokdu Flower which is my favorite historical drama. I compare that song with 'Do you hear then people sing' from Les Miserables.
Indee Bird, Bird, Blue bird is soul stirring!

Tearliner rarely does Osts but when they do, they are always great. They will most probably also make osts for The lies within because that PD always works with Tearliner.

Yes I’m hoping for the same thing! I always love that PD’s OSTs. Coffee Prince and CITT were 💖. Love Alarm’s was very reminiscent of CITT’s for me with Tearliner and Love X Stereo.

Extraordinary You. There’s much gushing over Dan Oh-Haru but truth be told, I would prefer a Dan Oh-Do Hwa pairing or Dan Oh-Bark Kyung pairing. I have a soft spot for BK & he is jerk cos he’s written that way & has a lousy father. Haru is too silent, too quiet.
Also can’t understand Do Hwa’s obsession with Joo Da. She seems to like Nam Joo so let her be. Who is to say that’s not how she really feels off stage as well? Joo Da is kind of tiring so I fail to understand her appeal to Do Hwa - silly boy should just move on.

Also - unpopular opinion but I find Haru to be a somewhat colorless character.
And nam joo is too trite that he’s annoying.
