Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

javabeans

Let’s Eat 3: I’ve missed Yoon Doo-joon, and this season has managed to re-create the same spirit of light-hearted, food-related fun anchored in character relationships that we’ve come to expect of this franchise. And it’s quite a feat to do that while swapping out all the characters minus one… but those swaps aren’t without their downsides, either. I’m not sure if revealing what happened to Seo Hyun-jin will kill the fun for me, because that just seemed like an extra kick in the pants that I’m not sure we really needed. I am so conflicted and the season has barely just begun.

Mr. Sunshine: Okay, I’ve seen enough to feel like I get what vibe the drama’s going for, and it just isn’t one that grips me. There are a lot of elements about this show I find very compelling, but it just doesn’t feel like an organic, character-driven show, and my emotions are having a hard time being engaged. It sort of feels like the show was built the opposite of the way I prefer — setpieces and overreaching arc first, then back-filling in with character moments, rather than starting with characters and building out from there. I do enjoy the addition of Byun Yo-han into the mix (he’s a welcome dose of lightness amidst all that manly dolor), and I find myself drawn to Kim Tae-ri and Yoo Yeon-seok’s tangled connection the most, which is mainly what I’m watching for.

Meteor Garden: I know we don’t generally cover non-Korean dramas here, but I figure this brand-new version of Meteor Garden earns a shout-out for all those Boys Over Flowers fans out there. Is the show — as per the usual M.O. — juvenile? Is the acting green? Does the story still make me cringe in moments? Yes, of course, and absolutely — but there must be something magical about this setup/story/franchise, because despite all that, I’m stupidly hooked on this show. The lead actress is one of the better versions of the character (not quite as great as the Japanese Tsukushi, but a distinct step up from the K-drama Jan-di), but it’s this new Daoming Si who’s got me obsessed with his adorable, idiotic, childlike ways. (He’s sweeter than the Japanese Doumyouji and less abusive than Lee Min-ho’s version, which means he just may become my favorite iteration of this character. We’ll see.) I may be groaning often at the defanged conflicts and lack of true stakes and the acting, but I’m also totally haunting the internet for new episodes and may have the release dates for every episode penciled into my planner.

girlfriday

Mr. Sunshine: Now that the introductions are out of the way, our cast of players is intersecting in really interesting ways, setting us up for multiple overlapping love triangles (or is it just one really big love pentagon?), which is certainly more exciting than a string of backstory vignettes. The Lee Byung-heon/Byun Yo-han revenge rivalry is classic, though nothing is better than the tense Yoo Yeon-seok/Kim Tae-ri scenes. I know my heart is doomed, and that there’s nothing to be done about it. I lived through Chilbongie. I know what lies there, and yet, here I am.

What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim: Granted, there wasn’t a whole lot of conflict in this series to begin with, but this week felt especially void of purpose. The couple is happy, in love, and on the same page about pretty much everything, which doesn’t leave a whole lot for them to do, other than hug and kiss. Okay, so it’s not like I’m going to complain about the hugging and kissing. I just thought we were leading up to this big change in the heroine’s life, where she goes off to find herself outside of her identity as Secretary Kim, no? Maybe I was expecting too much. Let’s just enjoy the smoochies.

Let’s Eat 3: Uhh… I know I’m always complaining about Yoon Doo-joon being a playboy in this series, but that wasn’t a request to do THAT to him! I was all geared up for a peppy round of food worship and throwback references, but now I’m crying into my noodles while rewatching the second season. I need a hug.

odilettante

Currently recapping: Let’s Eat 3

Your House Helper: I only really started this because the production team and some of the cast were involved with Strongest Deliveryman, and I was hoping this show would be similar. And it kinda is! Not just because of the cast (including the squee-worthy Kim Sun-ho cameo), but because it deals with everyday people who are struggling to get by, hoping to finally catch a break. The theme of three friends down on their luck who end up banding together also reminds me of Radiant Office, but maybe that’s because Ha Suk-jin is playing, well, the kind of character he always plays. There’s also a dash of Age of Youth due to the emphasis on all the female friendships, but now I’m probably pandering in a desperate attempt to get more people watching this underrated gem.

To. Jenny: A sweet two-episode drama that was pleasant if not exactly unique or demanding. It hit all the right notes for me (pun intended!), particularly my love for indie music, musical dramas, painfully anxious and shy people redeeming themselves, and Kim Sung-chul. I could listen to him sing all day, every day. I’ll probably remember this mini-drama more for the soundtrack than anything else, which isn’t really a complaint.

FLASH: I just watched the first 10 minutes of Mr. Sunshine, ep 5 and was totally bored. Now what?

This week I watch many drama, I start with Are You Human Too? And I think I catch what the main point in this drama. About human who are not really being human. I surprise to see Seo Kang Joon doing so well in this drama, I just only see him in CITT and Father Is Strange.

I catch up Come and Hug me, and the final is perfect for me. I always like Nam Da Reum in anything, and really wait for him to grow up. I know Jang Ki Yong because he is model (cause IU choose him twice in her MV), then I know him cause many beanies talk about him and there's My Mister that made me check him in CAHM. He is charming and I fell in love with his character as Namoo.

What's wrong with secretary Kim is the only show that I follow every week, never late to check the update. The major reason is PSJ & PMY and I'm not really care about the story.

I plan to watch DooJoon ASAP after I re-schedule my work-my school-my personal life. I really miss Doojoon and Let's eat.

Wok of love : the end is holey(s) but the scene where poong and sae woo have small gathering at geok jong's room alongside with cutting part ahjumma was priceless. It was so funny and natural and cute. Junho winked made me laugh so har. I didnt see it coming.

Ms hammurabi : the end even looser. I dont know why they chose to make judge han resign. But overall i learned a lot from this drama and this is a good one.

CAHM : this one had a pretty solid ending, but i think a lot in this drama that could be better than the way it is.

To jenny : this one so fun. Jung min character was adorable and silly (hat off for the actor) and i love his chemi with his sister the best. Still cant believe this one came from combo of rookie director and screenwriter.

I watched korean movie "HOPE" last night. First 10 to 15 minutes were okay, after that i cried nonstop till the end of the movie. I never cried so hard watching a movie after miracle in cell no 7 about 5 years ago. The story so painful and what made it worse it was based on true story. Thank God for that father, he have a heart of gold, kuddos for the actor acting. And that little boy crying and apologize because feeling guilty about not being with hope at that horrible day was so heartbreaking. I dont understand the judge the most, after what that cruel man did to an 8 yo girl till causing her cant control her bladder for the rest of her life, he just got 12 years in prison? The reason is because he was drunk while he doing that. And no compensation for family. I wonder what logic that judge used. No wonder it was causing an uproar in SK back then.

Life on Mars: As always, AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!

Come and Hug Me: It wasn't as good as I thought it'd be, tbh, but I enjoyed its look at the survivors and the ultimate triumph of living well. I wish it had a more nuanced view of violence but it had the ending I wanted and my fave murder-hyung lives, so I'm happy.

Miss Hammurabi: Blew threw this earlier this week and why has no one told me it's so good? The show could be a little heavy handed but it touched on important subjects and had such wonderful character development. And it featured the best kind of otp: the kind that learns and grows together.

Mr. Sunshine: I'm left ultimately unimpressed but I can't give it up because of Kim Min Jung and the historical elements. Help.

Forgot to mention Are You Human Too: Things are going to get really complicated now that Shin's awake. I knew from the beginning Nam Shin-III would probably experience jealousy towards Shin at some point but I thought it'd be about mom, not So-bong. And it looks like Shin is jealous of his robo-clone too. Maybe the real villains were comatose heirs we met on the way.

I dropped What's Wrong with Secretary Kim because It felt as if the drama doesn't have purpose again. The romance is good, it makes ones heart skip but it doesn't go beyond that. I just got so tired of it.

Currently watching:
1. The Undateables well, I feel that the lead actress is forcing herself to act. Her actions and reactions feels forced but I am enjoying the story line.
2. Are u human? What more can I say? It is just so interesting. The facial expressions to the voice, everything is just so perfect. I feel next week episode will take me through an emotional roller coaster.
3. Your House helper: where can I get an handsome house helper that can clean my life, take me to the hospital when I am sick, do my bidding just because he knows am struggling. Well, only in Kdrama

Investigation Couple: done

Sweet Dreams: three episodes to catch up.

My Story for you: catch up.. Episode 28-30 So boring.. Are still 2003???When are we going to get 2017?

Sharp Objects book: I finished reading. Having a hometown like that and family like. I would change my identity and run away as far as possible. How they are going to fit this in 8 episodes. I will watch it later on.

Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine book: Finished

Legend of Yun Xi: Need to catchup

Legend of Fuyao: same as above. Need to catch up

Mr. Sunshine: finished today’s episode. Pretty boring so far. The music in this episode make me sleepy. Should at night time if they have that music in the episode again.

I am really attempting to watch remake of Meteor Garden. It has been calling me to watch it. LOL so tempting. However, I can not due to my plate is full... At least it is no more than 50 episodes...

Have a great Saturday’s everyone...

Ashes to Ashes was mostly bad like really bad: only season 2 was ok. Also the failed attempt at romance/never ending tiresome sexual frustation weighed on the show from the start. It was lazy and even embarrassing at times.

My love is over! My fast, hot but flagging love affair with Greasy Melo has come to its predictable end; in the sweet-and-sour-pork of nostalgia and the messy fusion of jjajangmyeon. Everybody may have come out of the shadow of their respective narrative Giant Hotels and into the light, but I'm not sure Nietzsche would have approved, especially about Poong fusing the Hungry Wok and the Finishing Touch together.

It wasn't quite the affair I was hoping for, but I'm going to miss it anyway. Long live the Chef and the Prawn*. I loved it despite its flaws. I guess that means my love is True.

*I don't care if onion is the basis of jjajangmyeon, the Onion Princess very nearly ruined this dish.

Beanies who know, know that Almost Human blew my mind. I still think the show is a shadow of what it could have been, but it does often surprise me in a good way. (Sorry, my imagery for this post is all entirely Greasy Melo and will be for a while).

About to pick up Your House Helper, To.jenny.

Just about ready to binge like one of Poong's meal sets: WWSK and Life on Mars.

Greasy Melo: Just when I was mad at show for finishing without any character development for Sae Woo's mom or without addressing the vet girl, show ended with the sweetest fortune cookie confession EVER. So now, all is good in the world again.

Joking aside, I really did enjoy Greasy Melo. Yes, it had a lot of plot holes and dropped a few plots which left me a bit unsatisfied sometimes (still wondering what happened to Poong's ex and her opening an office on top of Hungry Wok), but it also featured a mature, realistic and hella flirty OTP and an epic bromance. I wanted light, funny and sweet and that's exactly what I got so Thank you, show!

What's wrong with secretary Kim: Apparently, nothing. According to episode 14, she has everything she hoped for. So, the end?

I agree with a lot of people that show misses a plot. To be fair, it's following the webtoon so I can't really blame drama writer completely but nothing major has really happened since ep 10-11. Watching two attractive people kiss and flirt is fun but not for 6 episodes. I will give the show props for handling some real conversations like sex and pace in a relationship. Pushing your partner (male or female) to have sex is a big No No so slow down and adjust your speed. Also, people gossiping that Secretary Kim slept her way to the top. Urgh, the struggle is real. Young Joon thought there would be no problem but he didn't realize that Mi so would have to pay the price of going public.

Life On Mars: Still very invested in the show even if my heart is hurting in preparation of Tae Joo going back to 2018. I mean, he has to? Or could he zip to 2018, save his ex and then flash back to the 80's? Is that too much to ask?

The Fall (on Netflix): Because 1 serial killer in Life on Mars is not enough in my life.

It's possible I was wrong and Poong's ex did not, in fact, kidnap Buster in a horrid talking-animal revenge plot. What if the disappearance of Poong's ex is completely unrelated to the disappearance (and reappearance) of Buster?

Or...it just occurred to me that Buster may have been the perpetrator here? He may have kidnapped Poong's ex under the orders of his hyungnim, Dim Sum.

Now we shall never know where Dim Sum has stashed the cheating ex or what he has in store for Sae-woo's ex husband. I expect it'll be messy - very messy.

Life on Mars: best kdrama actually airing, not even Mr Sunshine with its high budget and star studded cast can compare. A masterclass in how to create a perfect show. Not as good as Live though which stays the best kdrama of 2018 so far, but very close second.

Let's eat (S1): I thought i had to watch s1 and 2 before s3 and even suscribed Netflix for that but reading the comments it feels like there's no real link between each season except the characters. So was i wrong?

Let's Eat 3: I'm so happy right now that literally nothing could ruin this for me.

Mr Sunshine: It's such a cinematic experience and I like almost all the characters, EVEN EUGENE. I imagine it's mostly the Kim Eun-sook magic.

Sachiiro no One Room: This seriously has no business being so good.

Good Doctor: I NEED MORE.

The Memorandum of Okitegami Kyoko: Binged the series. From the writer of Unnatural and Nigeru wa Haji, I expected it to be more magnetic, but it got better over time to the point that the main characters had become so precious to me. Wonderful.

I'm not aware of legal sites if there is any, and by default, i use dramanice and fastdrama.
However, i didn't return to the last one since few weeks: adblock and my antivirus weren't enough to stop all the dangerous pops up. I don't have any problem with Dramanice currently.

Since jdramas are less likely to be subbed and when they are, it's often a slow process compared to kdrama, i use too a lot my dramalist. People post in the commentary section updates about subs and links to watch.

But lot of jdramas are still not subbed though i heard that since last year it got better.

1

Like, @coolgirl, I've found there's practically nowhere to watch the good stuff legally. A few favourites of mine, Dear Sister and Last Cinderella, are on Viki, but otherwise I watch things on drama9.io and fastdrama.se.

Also, weren't you supposed to be taking a break from Dramabeans, @cloggie? 😂

2

I'm trying @frabbycrabsis, but I've got no willpower.

I'll try harder over the next couple of weeks...

1

I'm rooting for you! Fighting! ♥♥♥

2

My mistake: i don't know how i managed to forget that Netflix and Prime Video offered few excellent titles.
Erased (jdrama and jdrama) is an excellent sci-fi/thriller jdrama on Netflix it's a must see (at least the drama). I enjoyed a lot Million yen woman (a fascinating "noir" drama about a writer who meet 5 women and has to resolve a mystery about their presence in his life) but it contains mature subjects, and i read positive reviews about Re-mind.

I have to check for Amazon: i can't remember the name of the dramas. I watched essentially western shows on their service.

0

"Erased (jdrama and jdrama)": i meant anime and jdrama/live action drama

0

That's true, @coolgirl, Million Yen Women was pretty cool. I also quite liked Ito-kun no A to E.

I'm waiting for the s2 of Cold Case (coming next october) to make my opinion. S1 was near perfect for me.

This drama is remarkably well written and the cast is great!

Wok of Love - I enjoyed this for the bromance and the romance. I think that I'll just forget about the onion queen, and only remember our three main characters, the Hungry Wok kitchen crew, Dim Sum and Buster.

Completed:
A Thousand Days' Promise (aka Forget Me Not) - A 2011 kdrama with wonderful performances and off-the-chart chemistry and affection from Su Ae & Kim Rae-Won. The intense and gripping emotions were a constant reminder for me as to why I started watching and became a fan of kdramas. Sometimes you crave old school kdramas that harken back to the feels of hallyu wave/fever era. Thanks Javabeans and Girlfriday for recapping this!

Nirvana in Fire 2: The Wind Blows in Chang Lin - the story and plotlines when they centered around Xiao Ping Zhang (Huang Xiao Ming), his stature and great ability as a strategist, and his wife Meng Qianxue (Tong Li Ya) evoked memories of Mei Changsu (Hu Ge) from the original NIF in many ways. However, once the younger son Xiao Ping Jing's arc (Liu Hao Ran) came to the forefront, the drama never really matched or caught up with or exceeded the epicness of the original.

Lawless Lawyer (aka Lawless Attorney) - Enjoyed it. Great to see Lee Jun-Ki & Seo Ye-Ji have a field day with their characters.

Currently Watching:
Life on Mars - watched the original British tv series. Great to see Jung Kyung-Ho and Go Ah-Sung in another good kdrama.

What's Wrong With Secretary Kim - Casually watching. A long ways before I become besotted by it. Lee Tae-hwan as Lee Sung-Yeon/Morpheus is miscast.

Sketch - tuning in for Rain and Lee Dong-Gun. Nothing against Lee Sun-Bin but interesting tidbit that Hwang Jung-Eum declined the role of Yoo Shi-Hyun.

Dropped:
Greasy Melo (aka Wok of Love)
Handsome Guy and Jung-eum (aka The Undateables)

Among other things I finished-
-Greasy Melo: Plot wasn't much but loved 3 leads. Enjoyed cuteness and witty lines.
-Miss Hammurabi: Nice show which made me think (I was fine with preachy stuff) and smile. (I still wonder about the family feud case- what was the verdict?)
-Come Here and Hug Me: Pacing was slow, but glad it had happy ending. OTP certainly deserves the happiness. Kudos to Jang Gi-yong.
-Handsome Guy: Meh, but feel-good drama.
-To.Jeanny: Songs were all nice but my favorite was the cool kid sister.

And My biggest surprise in this week's watch came from Hidden singer. 'You are my destiny' (You from Another Star) was sung by a GUY! (you know how high the note is) and won the second place (next to the original singer).

Back on the Queen Insoo wagon!!

Up to episode 32, and hoping to watch 33 tonight. I'm closing in on where I was the last time I stopped. Very, very excited to get into the reign of Sungjong, and to see the parts of the show No Jong-chan directed, but this time I'm not impatient at all. It's been a long time since I've watched any TV, so for whatever reason everything seems extra good. I am in awe of Chae Si-ra and Jeon Hye-bin. Their performances, combined with Jung Ha-yeon being Jung Ha-yeon, and the OST being all kinds of amazing, turn me into an emotional wreck by the end of every episode. Ah, sageuk. My tests are done! Now I am free to watch stuff for a little bit.

Miss Hammurabi: I felt the last few episodes were not as gripping but still good. I was so upset that OR was so torn over the wrong decision? Maybe it was slightly out of character in my opinion because she was always strong on her standpoints. Also, could we get an epilogue rather than an urealistic, they all met each other a long time ago flashback. I would love to see what everyone is up to in like a year from now. *Sighs* I am going to miss BR and his dimples each week :( Thank you Miss H for bring out important topics and portraying them in profound ways. Thank you DB community who watched it and offered various viewpoints on it. I enjoyed reading what others thought.

Are you human too: Currently binging. On ep 9. ugh every time roboshin smiles i get heart eyes. I love it more than I thought it would. If I had to guess, I thought I would like whats wrong secretary kim more.

What's wrong secretary kim: I am on ep 4 i think? It is cute...i think i made a mistake watching most of the cute moments on insta every week when I couldn't watch it. Now nothing really surprises me. haha.

Medical Examiner Dr Qin - I devoured this in 3 days! Haha. It’s a 30min+ per episode and it just breezed through. Although the main point and the most important case was the last one, but all the other cases were pretty interesting.
