Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching
by DB Staff
So, what are we all watching this week?
What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…
javabeans
Let’s Eat 3: I’ve missed Yoon Doo-joon, and this season has managed to re-create the same spirit of light-hearted, food-related fun anchored in character relationships that we’ve come to expect of this franchise. And it’s quite a feat to do that while swapping out all the characters minus one… but those swaps aren’t without their downsides, either. I’m not sure if revealing what happened to Seo Hyun-jin will kill the fun for me, because that just seemed like an extra kick in the pants that I’m not sure we really needed. I am so conflicted and the season has barely just begun.
Mr. Sunshine: Okay, I’ve seen enough to feel like I get what vibe the drama’s going for, and it just isn’t one that grips me. There are a lot of elements about this show I find very compelling, but it just doesn’t feel like an organic, character-driven show, and my emotions are having a hard time being engaged. It sort of feels like the show was built the opposite of the way I prefer — setpieces and overreaching arc first, then back-filling in with character moments, rather than starting with characters and building out from there. I do enjoy the addition of Byun Yo-han into the mix (he’s a welcome dose of lightness amidst all that manly dolor), and I find myself drawn to Kim Tae-ri and Yoo Yeon-seok’s tangled connection the most, which is mainly what I’m watching for.
Meteor Garden: I know we don’t generally cover non-Korean dramas here, but I figure this brand-new version of Meteor Garden earns a shout-out for all those Boys Over Flowers fans out there. Is the show — as per the usual M.O. — juvenile? Is the acting green? Does the story still make me cringe in moments? Yes, of course, and absolutely — but there must be something magical about this setup/story/franchise, because despite all that, I’m stupidly hooked on this show. The lead actress is one of the better versions of the character (not quite as great as the Japanese Tsukushi, but a distinct step up from the K-drama Jan-di), but it’s this new Daoming Si who’s got me obsessed with his adorable, idiotic, childlike ways. (He’s sweeter than the Japanese Doumyouji and less abusive than Lee Min-ho’s version, which means he just may become my favorite iteration of this character. We’ll see.) I may be groaning often at the defanged conflicts and lack of true stakes and the acting, but I’m also totally haunting the internet for new episodes and may have the release dates for every episode penciled into my planner.
girlfriday
Mr. Sunshine: Now that the introductions are out of the way, our cast of players is intersecting in really interesting ways, setting us up for multiple overlapping love triangles (or is it just one really big love pentagon?), which is certainly more exciting than a string of backstory vignettes. The Lee Byung-heon/Byun Yo-han revenge rivalry is classic, though nothing is better than the tense Yoo Yeon-seok/Kim Tae-ri scenes. I know my heart is doomed, and that there’s nothing to be done about it. I lived through Chilbongie. I know what lies there, and yet, here I am.
What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim: Granted, there wasn’t a whole lot of conflict in this series to begin with, but this week felt especially void of purpose. The couple is happy, in love, and on the same page about pretty much everything, which doesn’t leave a whole lot for them to do, other than hug and kiss. Okay, so it’s not like I’m going to complain about the hugging and kissing. I just thought we were leading up to this big change in the heroine’s life, where she goes off to find herself outside of her identity as Secretary Kim, no? Maybe I was expecting too much. Let’s just enjoy the smoochies.
Let’s Eat 3: Uhh… I know I’m always complaining about Yoon Doo-joon being a playboy in this series, but that wasn’t a request to do THAT to him! I was all geared up for a peppy round of food worship and throwback references, but now I’m crying into my noodles while rewatching the second season. I need a hug.
odilettante
Currently recapping: Let’s Eat 3
Your House Helper: I only really started this because the production team and some of the cast were involved with Strongest Deliveryman, and I was hoping this show would be similar. And it kinda is! Not just because of the cast (including the squee-worthy Kim Sun-ho cameo), but because it deals with everyday people who are struggling to get by, hoping to finally catch a break. The theme of three friends down on their luck who end up banding together also reminds me of Radiant Office, but maybe that’s because Ha Suk-jin is playing, well, the kind of character he always plays. There’s also a dash of Age of Youth due to the emphasis on all the female friendships, but now I’m probably pandering in a desperate attempt to get more people watching this underrated gem.
To. Jenny: A sweet two-episode drama that was pleasant if not exactly unique or demanding. It hit all the right notes for me (pun intended!), particularly my love for indie music, musical dramas, painfully anxious and shy people redeeming themselves, and Kim Sung-chul. I could listen to him sing all day, every day. I’ll probably remember this mini-drama more for the soundtrack than anything else, which isn’t really a complaint.

ok so to.jenny... everything but the romance was superb. I think I just can't get behind pairings that aren't friends/rivals/enemies to lovers. I just don't find them compelling. as a person accused of friend-zoning her friends (!) I found myself sympathizing with Na-ra instead of Jung-min. the entire thing rubbed me the wrong way. his attraction never stopped seeming superficial. idk. tiramisu cake.
AYHT owns me in every sense. hopefully I can stop rewatching e12 when e13 comes out but I doubt that. I'm a garbage eating raccoon rolling in a pile of trash, give me Orishinal or give me death - redemption arc or not. dark!SKJ is where it's at.

What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim - I had high hopes for the bed scene and it didn’t let me down. Having read webtoon, I knew exactly what this light-hearted romantic-comedy is about. So no complaints about plot and writing. It’s a very faithful adaptation and that’s mostly the reason to it’s hype, the cast is like a heaping spoon of whip cream and Park Seo Joon’s abs is the cherry on top.
Life on Mars - My fluff balancing don’t-breathe-too-loud-this-is-way-too-interesting drama is killing me with everything cliffhanger, longer-than-reality wait and then opening smash of KyungHo. 😩
Let’s Eat 3 Really missed DY. So far I like girlfriend #3. The college flashbacks are hilarious 😂. But please give more food porn!
Solomon’s Perjury Gave this 2016 high school murder mystery a try because Netflix keeps insisting I’d be interested (seriously over a year). And now I can’t stop. Binged 10 episodes this week while waiting for Life On Mars.

Hi @geliguolu sph_7. LIFE ON MARS is so good.
I am glad you are enjoying SOLOMON'S PERJURY. I really enjoyed the young actors in this series. It wasn't a rating winner but that's a loss for those who didn't watch it.
As a bonus you get to watch Jang-Dong-yoon play a sensitive, sweet character. That will not be the case if you watch his portrayal of Min-ho in A POEM A DAY. In POEM, JDY gave a fine performance as the character Min-ho was written.
(I shouldn't rattle the cage and get the shipping wars going again but I was on the Minhoyoung side of things.)

To.jenny: TIRAMISU CAKE, TIRAMISU CAKE. Cute cute. Short cute "movie" feel. I need more of these drama types... maybe a 16 episode drama of this style? Jeabal.
House helper: it crept up in my heart. Gives me AOY feels. It relaxes you after a long day. Do watch it!
Ayht: i think i watched the latest episode twice? The cute scenes are to die for. Ugh the twists are so good. They know how to keep me hooked. Decidedly, i loved INAR better, but this couple is still golden. And sobongie is wicked cool.
LOM: excited for this week. The pacing for ep9 was laching but 10 put it back on track... THAT CLIFFHANGER.
mr sunshine: dropped. I guess ill look into it from to time for the ost.
CAHM: i fell asleep during the finale. But that final scene with the leads hugging their younger selves was touching. Everything came round. This drama could have been golden if it werent for writing and pacing. But the acting was great.
Undateables: tried to hold out for the last week but couldnt. Dropped.

I finished three dramas this week and will finish one next week which is good considering I only finished four dramas in 2017. This was the end of a round of dramas that were likable but had so much missed potential.
Wok of Love: Overall a disappointment. The first half was a mess; I never got into the OTP so the second was kind of boring. Still, I loved Chil Sung and liked Poong and it had some good moments.
Miss Hammurabi: It could be preachy at times, but I appreciated how it tackled social issues and presented all sides. Judge Han was my favorite so I wasn't thrilled with the ending.
Come and Hug Me: There were things I liked about this drama and things I disliked (mostly the pacing) but the writer shows potential and Jang Ki Yong is someone I'll look out for in the future. I thought Hyun Moo and Moo Won ended up being the most interesting characters.
What's Wrong With Secretary Kim: No, I don't this is the greatest rom-com of all time, but I need an easy and sometimes cheesy watch and this hits the spot. The abs this week were nice too.
Let's Eat 3: I watched a couple episodes of the first series but dropped it because I just can't with food porn/foodgasm stuff. I still hate that part but gave this a try because the college years looked fun. I liked it enough to give it another week although there will be fast-forwarding.
None of the dramas coming up interest me except Familiar Wife but hopefully there will be something that grabs my interest.

Miss H: Judge Han was my favorite too, I was disappointed he retired. He could still teach those kids a few things since he was so wise.
Wok: I was only in it for Junho, so I sort of ff thru Jang Hyuk's scenes.
Come and Hug Me: I finally gave up. I loved it at first and I don't mind slow paced, but it continued to be that slow paced. It would have been better with less episodes.
The ones coming up that I'm looking forward to are just because of my favorite actors. Unfortunately, lately the ones some of my favorites have been in have really sucked. (About Time, ex).
Are you not watching Life on Mars? One of the most well written shows on right now.

So my days were spent with watching Thailand drama The Crown Princess. I don't remember exactly how I get into this drama, but I did and the drama has been occupying my thoughts since then.
The Crown Princess is actually my first Thailand drama I watched, with no background on the casts, the production style and even the language. It takes me quite sometime to get used to the style of Thailand production (I am still trying), and what makes me stay is the chemistry of the two main leads. The drama is about a heartbreaking romance between a bodyguard and a crown princess. Both of them love each other but they are very dutiful people so they chose duty over their hearts. For me the drama is beautiful as they managed to convey the longing, the yearning, the sadness, and the love they have towards each other, and the credit definitely goes towards the two main leads, Nadech (the bodyguard) and Yaya Urassaya (the crown princess).
Because of them I am having a hard time to move on with the drama because the feelings still remain in my heart....yeah, I am definitely is experincing a withdrawal syndrome. So I need to fill the void with their clips I found in youtube, and I was thoroughly suprised and delighted to know that these two leads are actually very close in real life! That explains the chemistry shown on the characters. When I said very close, I finally understand why people ship Song Joongki and Song Hyekyo after Descendent of the Sun, because that is how I see it and that is what I am feeling right now. Moreover they are quite popular couple in Thailand and has been going strong for years already! They haven't admit or deny anything but like they said in some interviews (I can't remember which one), it is up to our interpretation. Oh well...I am so going to see them more than just best friend. I love that they are sweet with each other, but at the same time loves teasing and prank each other. That's why people love them!
Okay I think I ramble quite a bit about shipping a couple. I can't stop myself, because I really love their chemistry on and off cam.
One more thing I like about the drama is because I love strong and fierce female lead. She is constantly being subjected to numbers of assassinations, and most of them almost gonna cost her her life (it is to the point I have to suspend my beliefs....huhuhu) but that is not my point here. She fights well, and she is smart with the politics and strategies, and also headstrong but has a soft heart. Although she needs constant saving, but she is not a weakling. I am really loving the characterisation, and her development throughout the drama. And her scenes with the bodyguard, that is like an icing on the cake! I am definitely gonna put this drama onto my rewatch list.
Of course, I have a few criticisms with the drama, but I'd rather dwell on the good than the bad. So now....I am off to watch more interactions between Nadech x Yaya on Youtube 😍

You need to watch Kleun Cheewit (it has Yaya and Mark). That was my 1st th-drama. Ive seen korean dramas more than a decade, but Yaya in KC is my ultimate female lead, nobody can bully her. I am actually a bit disappointed with TCP. The love and romance were there, but nothing happened! They teased us like crazy, but we only got a little peck on the lips almost toward the end of the episodes...grrr.. I'm not asking about hot kisses all the time, that's like asking too much from th-drama, but at least show us better than that. Yaya and Nadech have so many dramas together, check them out :)

My favorite Thai drama is Prissana (2000) starring Taya & Tik, and the FL character of Prissana, as played by Taya, is awesome! The story is based on a novel known as "Thailand's version of Pride & Prejudice". One of the best lakorns ever made, it is worth seeking out.
I would also recommend is Bhupphae Sanniwat. FL is an archeologist who travels back in time, and she is wonderful.

Another intense, well-crafted story is Proong Nee Gor Ruk Tor (Tomorrow, I’ll Still Love You), starring Pong and Aom.
Also highly recommend Nuang Nai Suang (One in My Heart), the 2005 version starring Ken and Janie

I heard there are six dramas they acted together. Definitely have to check them out (slowly but surely).
I remember when watching the Crown Princess, I have been asking myself when are they gonna kiss each other? Huhuhu...that is why I described this drama as a heartbreaking romance drama, because they make me cry more than they kiss. Hahaha.
Thank you for your suggestion. Will check them out 😆

I realised they are super popular individually, and together after I watched their interactions, and I must I am pleased with their chemistry. They have this bestfriend vibes going on, but by the way the look at each other it is more than that. Well I guess only time will tell where are they heading.
If you want to feel your heart breaking with their sad love story, I recommend The Crown Princess. Haha. They also have a few cute moments too.

My story for you 6/10 - Good chinese drama. A bit slow, lacks energy,
Characters do frustrate you and main female lead is just a side characters and side characters are the main characters. Overall, Worth Watch
Nirvana in Fire - 15 episodes dropped. I've seen enough political fights between parties and rivals in my life so i just don't feel this show brings anything new on the table. I actually find it quite stretched, As i said from start i'm not interested in a Gary-Stu hero.
It only looks good when AIZEN says "Everything is planned."
The House Helper - 7/10. Show is good. I'm invested in girls life.
Marry me Now - Almost dropped. If i skip 1 week of a show then most probably i won't even try to watch its episodes and eventually it will be dropped.
Mateor Garden - 3/10 Its trash.
To. Jenny 3/10 - Thank you Korea Tourism.
Life on Mars 7/10 - Put on hold because of -ve stuff
Waiting for Life - Risky Romance - Gangnam beauty
Let's Eat 3 - Dropped.

Are You Human Too: I never knew I could be scared of a person fresh out of coma. The guy makes me sweat. This is a show I am most invested in. I know everyone is trying to protect Roboshin in their own way but I am still scared.
Secretary Kim: The whole week felt sort of pointless. While their evolution as a couple is important, It seemed like things were not going in any particular direction.
Meteor Garden: I fully agree with @javabeans that this version of the girls character is the best so far. Daoming Si is definitely sweeter but still seems borderline abusive and volatile. Darren Chen at the Wimbledon was such a cute surprise. I guess I am watching this show for the cliches. And Daoming Si's hairstyle cause I think of a pineapple whenever I look at it.

Life On Mars: ❤️
Are You Human Too?: HumanShin needs to be hit by another TOD because apparently one hit is not enough for him to learn life lessons, he is still arrogant and a jerk.
Goodbye To Goodbye: Few week’s behind on this but I’m still enjoying it.
Come Here And Hug Me: Have yet to see the finale. Hyun-moo is Love.
About Time, Wok of Love (sorry JunHo) & Snail (sorry Wang Kai): Dropped.
Good Doctor (Japanese): Yamazaki Kento continues to impress me with his acting.
Ten Miles of Peach Blosssoms: I love this drama! I did skip some parts (bitchy second lead & ghost people storylines) but I enjoyed Yangmi & Mark Chao love story.
Meet Me at 1006: Stuck at episode 6.
The King’s Woman: Makjang but so addictive. Leads chemistry is off the chart, and Zhang VinVin is love.
Meteor Garden 2018: Cringe-worthy & cliche but I love it.
The Princess and The Matchmaker: Korean movie. I was left scratching my head after watching. Forced romance and no backstory for the villain. Worth watching for Lee Seungi and the lead girl (can’t recall her name).

The only thing I'm watching: AYHT.
Seeing the Original constantly baffled by his bodyguard and his replica is uber-entertaining. Started with the "I can't believe she completely ignored me and ran off to find that robot" to the '"Great! now they're both ignoring me" is-this-how-jealousy-feels-like? ending. Fun, fun.
Did not manage to survive watching any of the many iterations of BoF, but I did watch some snippets of the latest Meteor Garden; the scene where they're both on his bed laughing as he's drawing piggies on her face is adorable.

@javabeans, at the risk of sounding like a broken record and annoying fellow beanies, you really ought to give My Ajusshi a try because it is everything opposite of the things you find unsatisfying about Mr. Sunshine. For sure MA is "an organic, character-driven show" and "starting with characters and building out from there." Plus, it's got LSK and IU in her best performance so far. I am so curious at what you will think about it.

What I was supposed to watch but did not watch this week:
1. Are you Human Too? Good question! I was unable to get past ep 14 to see the answer, maybe some questions are best left unanswered.
STATUS: Can you be dropped? (On the other hand I would prefer captcha's to ask me this question, then telling me to verify I am not a robot! )
2. Come and Hug Me I ran away! Sorry!
STATUS: It came and I
hammeredkicked it out of my life.3. What's wrong with Secretary Kim? Nothing in particular but then there was nothing to begin with. You don't expect me to watch people kissing + epsilon for 6 episodes, right?
STATUS: On Hold, If I can fight this whole universe to press that play button, I will try to complete it.
What I actually watched:
5. To.Jenny : Every couple breaks up anyways! So let's eat up, fat! This was hilarious. HA!
6. Clean Me, Heal Me Its really Age of Youth 3 done very well. I am getting healed and I did two steps of laundry, 3 more to completion. Yay!!!

A Chinese drama on a Korean drama site?!? But, it’s true, even I tried Meteor Garden for all of 5 minutes. And not because of the DB hype—hubby found it for me. But once we figured out it was a BOF remake, I was out. I really didn’t care for the first. However, maybe it’ll be a good binge watch when there is nothing else that piques my interest.
Otherwise, I saw 6 (I know! That’s crazy!) dramas this week. And I like all of them. But as I mentioned on the OT, I’m pretty easy to please in the summer. Everything has its charms:
1. Mr. Sunshine: gorgeous leads, pretty colors, great camera work, everything is framed perfectly, the quality is just exceptional.
2. Prison Playbook: quirky characters, bromances to last a lifetime, and Jung Kyung-ho.
3. Legend of Fuyao: Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan (I really feel like a broken record with these two, but they’re just that good, I promise).
4. To. Jenny: I get upset that music is so much out in the periphery of my life when I see shows like this one. Kim Sung-chul makes this drama watchable, he’s adorable and such a sweet voice.
5. WWWSK: Park Seo-jun’s, errr, acting, and the peripheral characters are what I’m the most invested in this week.
6. Let’s Eat 3: Yoon Doo-joon is Dae-young and that’s all there is to that. And I quite like that he has to deal with the death of his love; it’s realistic and adds emotional weight and a plot line. And the second episode hit home for me with Ji-Woo’s mother having dementia. Two hurt souls needing each other. Love the set up.
And planning on squeezing in Life this week. That’s one I’m really looking forward to! May need to start waking up early and working out again so I have more “time” to watch dramas!

I second your motion of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan being just that good.
And I agree with your feelings about Meteor Garden. Chinese drama-wise I'll stick with Legend of Fuyao.

Miss Hammurabi: I'm so sad that it has ended. It was such a warm drama even though the injustices often made my blood boil. I think it was jumped the shark a little to have the victim from the sexual harassment case expose Condescending Chaebol and the Date Rapist connection to the botched surgery. But I loved how we get to see the line "throwing an egg against a rock" come around again, this time with protester lady egging Condescending Chaebol.
I enjoyed the improbable high school connection! Han Se Sang was being such an ass about the seat, it goaded OR into speaking up.
I also enjoyed how all the young judges rallied together, even the Urinal Assholes. The drama showed the contradictions within people. Chaebol was corrupt and classist, but he sincerely cared about the foundation he runs to helps disadvantaged people. Misogynist Drunk Juror #1, whom I had dismissed with disgust, made an impassioned defense for the domestic abuse defendant. While it's true and sad that many people can't find it in themselves to feel sympathy unless they've personally experienced a similar situation, it doesn't take away from those miracles that happen because someone found a shred of sympathy within themselves and acted on it.
What's Wrong with Secretary Kim (up to ep 13): After a few dramatic weeks, it was awkward switching gears back to the everyday. Guess it sort of matches OTP's awkwardness with each other as they try to navigate this first ever romantic relationship in their lives complicated by their professional relationship and them being in their 30s. For the first time, I need one of those cliche separations and time jumps.
The Big Boss (done, and already rewatching) I think I am able to better appreciate the meandering stories the second time around and just relish the little moments, details, and expressions that make this drama such a fun and hilarious watch. I can't believe they did an entire episode about the kids playing the Werewolf game (there was a time in my 20s when my friends and I were really into a similar game. so. much. screaming.). Loved it!
Legend of Fuyao (up to ep 23) There are a lot characters and details packed into this drama. Thank goodness for wikipedia. Some of the acrobatics are over-the-top, but damn if the drama and all the action moves aren't a feast for the eyes! I'm a little impatient to have Fuyao move out of her consort role and meet up with Lanshu and Zhan Beiye again.

Short YouTube drama's (too many to list): There hasnt been alot of shows that kept my interest, & because of that I randomly got into YouTube drama shows. I like them, they're short (10 minutes at the most) and the stories are realistic. For example couples in a few of them will break up for actual real reasons and they might not get back together at the end of the series.
To. Jenny: I had no interest in this, and kind of just randomly watched it, & I'm happy I did. Really a great two part musical drama. The acting and story is cute, it has great funny moments, and the main characters sister one of the best kid characters I've seen anywhere. Also, who knew a song about tiramisu cake would be something I will spend all week listening to.

What's Wrong With Secretary Kim - what I love about this is that it shows finding yourself does not need to involve a purge of everything in your life. That's actually the easier thing to do. Rather the ability to take a step back and re-examine all the relationships and people in your life and to re-prioritize your life and what's important is so much harder. The show shows just how easy it is to fall right back into the old routine even though roles and relationships have changed. And I would argue it was a huge step for Mi So to come to realization that she actually did love being a secretary, she was just working hard for everyone else instead of because of her own enjoyment. Now that she realizes just how much she likes it, and is able to say no and put herself first, things are going to change. I just feel so connected to it because I've been going through my own version of this, I love my job but have lost focus of who and what I'm doing it for and have been trying to find that again. I just wish I had a Young Joon next to me along for the ride.

Real life was a bit all consuming this week. (How very dare it.) So, I'm a bit behind in my dramas. I will definitely need to be very selective when the next batch of shows begin.
Are You Human Too
As far as I'm concerned this is the most compelling and most reliable show week-on-week. It has raised a lot of questions about personhood that I thought it would avoid, as well as challenging a lot of the conventional labels we might attach to relationships. (What's the relationship between desire and romance? Does there need to be one? Can it be romantic at all if one person isn't capable of emotion? Where do you put that? How much of an A.I.'s behaviour is pre-determined and how much is of its own volition?) I don't know whether it will deus ex machina its way out of answering those questions, but right now it's definitely trying to ask the difficult questions. I definitely have quibbles, which I've rambled about on my fanwall, but as it's also given me fodder for discussion I forgive all.
Plus it's so much fun to watch, and SKJ and GSY have a lovely rapport that 100% deserves our support. Cheese in the Trap is now on my to-watch list because of SKJ. He is so gooooood. Nam Shin is a much better Big Bad than the gurning Jong-gil and the Machiavellian Gramps. Despite all the understandable reasons why he's an emotional and psychological dumpster fire of a human, I don't think I'll be rooting for his redemption in this show. Unless he and Young-hoon admit their true feelings for one another. Otherwise ... meh. Happy for a chaebol to bite the dust.
Wok of Love
My show. My lovely uneven show. I don't think any other show I've watched recently has had episodes that inspired my adoration followed swiftly by the purest feelings of apathy. The core trio kept me on the hook until the final episode, and Sae-woo and Poong's romance was nearly everything I hoped it would be. The parental opposition trope was a monumental waste of storytelling time, and I wished for more substantial relationship building between characters outside of the trio, but this was a fundamentally kind show about trust, hope, hard work, big dreams, and love. I will miss the Hungry Wok gang a lot.
What's Wrong with Secretary Kim
Watched 13 and 14. Show is now dead to me.
Ichirei Shite
Came across this movie and thought "Archery club! Teen romance! Fun!" Got as far as initial rapey scene between leads. Decided to call it a day.
Still have to catch this week's Miss Hammurabi, have yet to watch last week's Mr Sunshine, and want to watch the end of Come and Hug Me. Beanies' love of to.Jenny has sparked my curiosity, so I might have a look-see.

I really thought the parental opposition plotline was such a disappointing direction for the show to take when it had gone to such lengths to avoid all those tired tropes.

I can't work out if the problem is that they lost an episode or that it was 4 episodes too long in the first place. I was convinced they'd changed writers after the hiatus. It was like they looked at the show's ingredients and went "I can't work with half of these" and left them on the chopping boards unused.

I think the pacing was off from the start. It took far too long for certain elements to work together, and then it felt like a mad dash to the end. I also think Chil-Sung masterminded too much of the Giant Hotel attack on his own whereas it would have been more interesting if the other characters had taken different roles in taking it down. That's my take, at least.

The pacing worked for me because I really loved the 'life as jjajangmyeon' thing and it's a messy dish. But when the time came for them to pull all the threads together - and I personally thought they had laid the groundwork really well- it's like they just didn't know how.
I just remembered that they jettisoned a couple of plots in Jealousy Incarnate too. Maybe they're just too ambitious.

Hmm. I felt it spend too long laying the same groundwork. Honestly, twas only my affection for Junho and Jung Ryeon-won that kept me coming back in the early days. Then things started to move in the Hungry Wok, but we never really progressed beyond endless mini face-offs with the Giant Hotel, which mainly revolved around Poong or Chil-sung throwing down the gauntlet or some way or other. The Giant Hotel owner and chef weren't very interesting antagonists, had little purpose beyond being antagonists, and were too one-dimensional.
I've only watched the first few episodes of Jealousy Incarnate, and - if I remember it correctly - I think it was much more competent at establishing all the contending storylines even if the Wok of Love characters were individually more interesting to me.
I will keep an eye out for the writer's next show, all the same.
P.S. Your commitment to jajangmyeon analogies is very impressive! :)

Mate, that's literally all I have to offer. I'm just an empty shell with a metaphor generator. I'm like the Deepak Chopra of kdrama.
But I do agree with you. I absolutely loved every minute of its messy, crazy self until about episode 9 when I thought they needed to start bringing things together. And then they just... didn't. Then they finally had those great episodes of everyone in the Hungry Wok working side-by-side to pull them out of bankruptcy. And then they jettisoned it completely for the disloyal employees and awful mother and I started to wonder what the point was.
Why spend so much time on fusion as a theme when you're not going to bring everyone together? Answer: they did, just in the last episode and in a 'theme park ride through our character's lives' kind of way.
When they resolved Sae-woo's father's plight practically offscreen and then devoted acres of text to cooking competitions (judged by nurses??) I was just so disappointed.
I also think the protagonists were really poorly developed (and in some cases, magicians who disappeared completely).
If it was an American show I'd think the actors had gotten different jobs or they couldn't book them for episodes (a common contractual problem in the US and Canada). Because why else would they just disappear?
The other show this reminds me of in fact is Fight For My Way where so much was wrong with it but I really enjoyed it anyway. That also had dropped plotlines and disappearing characters. I didn't love it like I love Greasy Melo but I had a similar reaction to the final episode.

I was just reading some of the comments on the recap, and they reminded me of so much of the drama's initial eccentricity that I had completely forgotten.
I do remember thinking Sae-Woo became a little more conventional. She had this kind of impenetrable space cadet quality at the beginning, I felt. I for sure thought she'd end-up fencing some rival thugs at some point. And there was Oh-Shik's other girlfriend/fiancée? And there was no follow-up on the fact that all their friends abandoned them.
You know, I think what I really missed from the final episode was the trio sitting down together and having one of their odd little chats. Once Sae-Woo and Poong started dating, the trio became less of a three and more of a group of twos. They never had a discussion about their friendship all together again.
*sigh*
I will cherry-pick my viewing when I go back and rewatch parts. It is such a bittersweet ending knowing there were so many missed opportunities.
Also: YOU ARE UNSTOPPABLE.

Hi guys!!!
Finally got the time to set up an account and join the party, after years of lurking haha. Hope everyone had a fabulous drama-watching time this week! I’m glad to see DB being merry.
I watched quite a lot of stuff this week (yay break from work!) so on to the rant:
Are You Human Too:
Started this drama out of curiosity and boredom and the sci-fi premise and goddamn, 12 episodes and I am fully invested. The awakening of human Nam Shin really do a lot in upping the drama stakes, and he is such an interestingly gripping character. I feel like he is such a foil for our robot Nam Shin-III, and I cannot wait to see both of them in their journey of obtaining their agency.
And I live for the (seemingly absolutely) doomed human-robot OTP. Also for Secretary Ji’s not-so-secret longing glances towards human NS. (Show, I know you would NOT go there, but let me wallow in my thinking that there is something.)
Let’s Eat 3:
Oh my, my. All the food porn. Yoon Doo-joon, I missed you.
I know this drama would follow the same formula as the previous two seasons, so I was not expecting much. But the series is still super enjoyable as it is, and our new lead female scores my attention for being so earnest and endearingly funny. The 2004 storyline seems fun, and I hope it continues on to cement this one as a memorable entry in the franchise.
Your House Helper:
WWWSK, contrary to it’s hype, did not attract me in any way at all, despite having PMY and all that BTIOFL cameo. I just didn’t connect, and with my mid-week schedule empty I tried this one, and yay. It worked!
This drama brought me elements of a story-done-before, sprinkled in various nook and cranny, surprisingly resulting in a nice package. I found it akin to eating pretty homemade bento - It’s such an easy, breezy watch.
Our lead couple is sweet, but what got me hooked was Lee Ji-hoon’s adorable bumbling lawyer and him being embarassing but sweet in every attempt on getting closer to Go Won-hee’s designer character. They’re shaping up to be one of my fave second lead romances, and trajectory seems gooooood.
(TLDR; go watch. I agree this show is one underrated gem, and I hope the rating picks up.)
Mr.Sunshine:
No, no, no, no, no. I had such high hopes, and being visually rich (aka oozing with money in every frame) this drama sure is enticing, and yet thoroughly empty on the emotion front. It’s just... a lot of things feels disjointed, and it kept me from being thoroughly engaged. I’ll keep watching for Yoo Yeon-seok, but the dreaded feeling of sitting a drama for just one interesting character is starting to creep in and it reminds me a lot of my last-year experience going through Saimdang just for tiny minutes of Yang Se-jong. God, it felt like a chore.
To.Jenny:
Call this the sweet, short K-Drama version of La La Land. Our boy sure can sing, his voice reminds me a lot of the late Jonghyun. What I love most is him being clueless and his little...

To.Jenny:
Call this the sweet, short K-Drama version of La La Land. Our boy sure can sing, his voice reminds me a lot of the late Jonghyun. What I love most is him being clueless and his little sister super sassy in contrary. I swear, that girl is 10 yo me’s spirit animal. Overall good drama score for me this week, and Tiramisu Cake is muh jam. Give me more of that, K-Pop, you’ve been underwhelming.
I’m thinking of picking up Life on Mars soon, cause I only heard good things so far, hope it wouldn’t disappoint!
And I’m super duper glad JB brought up the new Meteor Garden, because it. is. my. newfound crack. Yes, there is something magical about the whole formula, because no matter how primitively shojo the concept is, it’s still a good story that works in many different mediums.
Major love for the redemption of Daoming Si, who used to be a character I love to hate in every version and name (BOF’s Jun-pyo is second in list of drama leads I hate with a passion, and first is Kim Tan, which speaks a lot about my disappointment of Lee Min-ho’s acting choices.) No wonder I got many callbacks of Hana Yori Dango while watching, thanks to the more likable character and the actor somewhat looking like he could be Matsumoto Jun’s giant little bro. And also I noticed the new Shan Cai’s down to a T similar appearance and styling to Sugisaki Hana’s lead in Hana Nochi Hare. Is it intentional? Lol.
Oops, too much words for first ever comment, haha. Anyway, on to another drama viewing! What drama have you been waiting for in next week premiere?

Come And Hug Me: I really like this drama A LOT! For me, its my top 3 drama of the year alongside My Ajusshi and Eulachacha Waikiki. And now I still having hard time to move on from the drama and I still haven't watched the latest episodes of other dramas that I follow.
WWWSK: Love to watch this drama only for its humor. Actually I don't really feel the chemistry between PSJ and PMY, I like their chemistry with Choi Aera and Lee Yeok more :/
House Helper: So far I enjoyed watching this drama. Loving Ha Seok Jin calm character. I can relate with the main girl (forget her name) when its come to cleaning. And looking forward to more interaction of the 2nd lead, they are adorable!
The Undateables: I might watch the last 4 episodes later but
theres nothing more to see for the plot, they will get married and that all lol..
Are You Human Too: Actually I'm more curious with how they will end the drama. Just like So Bong, I really hope Nam Shin 3 will not die/disappear at the end. Now that human Nam Shin awake, I hope he will not suddenly fall in love with So Bong and become third wheel..
