Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

javabeans

Busted: This is a Netflix-only show, which limits its viewability, but worth a watch if you’re on Netflix. The games and mini-missions feel super familiar for anyone who loves variety like Running Man, 1 Night 2 Days, or the old-school classic X Man, but Busted impressed me the first episode with the degree of planning and execution they went through to create incredibly elaborate puzzles and mazes. I died laughing in the water balloon segment that nearly drowned Yoo Yeon-seok and Kwang-soo, and came away with additional love for Park Min-young, who’s one of the sharper tacks in the bunch. I’m expecting the games to settle down as we go, but I’ll be back for Yoo Jae-suk, the crew, and their gently ribbing camaraderie.

girlfriday

Greasy Melo: It’s as weird and funny as I’ve come to expect from this writer, maybe EVEN weirder, but I think that’s the Jang Hyuk factor. The opening episodes were a little hard to follow at times, with so many characters and just a string of vignettes loosely strung together, but that’s nothing new. I think it’ll take a few episodes to really get invested, because right now it’s just funny farce and food porn (so much foooooood). Jung Ryeo-won is just right for this kind of comedy, though, so I expect her to make it easy to get invested in her character.

mary

Tale of a Good Witch: I can’t believe I finished this show while falling behind on Jak-doo, but Good Witch had a couple of things going for it that saved it from lagging: Lee Da-hae acting like an evil stepsister to Cinderella Da-hae, makjang twists that become ridiculously funny at 1.2x speed, and a shorter episode count. There’s almost no filler to speak of. In fact, the ending left me wanting more filler. I love-hated these people for the past twenty episodes, couldn’t they show us more of Tae-ri being punished? Mom and Oh Byung-pan being awkward around each other? Tae-yang bromancing his hyung after hating him for years? The wedding scene was sweet, but it felt like we didn’t get enough of Woo-jin and Sun-hee being lovey-dovey, and I wish we had a couple more minutes of Sun-hee using her brand new Spine of Righteousness.

You Who Forgot Poetry: This show turns me into a bad person who laughs at a snail-biking ex-chaebol who lost his treasured shirt connecting him to his happy past and can’t reunite with his first love because they both need more part-time jobs. I’m sorry for laughing at Nam-woo’s suffering and wish the writer would stop making Min-ho sink further into nope-guy territory, give him the character growth we all want him to have, and spare some thought to making Nam-woo happy. It’s not that hard. All you need is an alligator shirt.

Live: I’m so used to OCN cop shows where an angry guy with a traumatic past can take down a dozen thugs that it scares me how Live’s universe is populated by vulnerable people. Like why are they put in danger by one colleague slacking off and adding an extra call to everyone’s workload? Why does a cop get incapacitated by just a couple of kicks from some kids? Why does it take seven traumatised cops to subdue a crazy man with a gun? Why does Jeong-oh have to apologize for educating parents on the dangers of sexual assault– just so she can get to stay at the job AND keep protecting their children from said assault? It’s all so unfair and real. Are we sure this isn’t a documentary?

TeriYaki

Miracle That We Met: The spirit of chef Hyun-cheol may be in a different body, but what hasn’t changed is how he cares for those closest to him. That now includes Hye-jin and her children, which only makes his impossible situation more complicated. I find myself wondering who will take care of Hyun-cheol, who finds himself between two very different wives. Kim Hyun-joo has made quite an impression as the love-deprived Hye-jin whose heart has been touched by her post-accident husband. As she recalls happier days with her Hyun-cheol in scenes with Kim Myung-min, I can’t tell if she’s falling in love with the new version or grieving her late husband. It’s this ambiguity that gives the romantic triangle its tension and keeps me conflicted about which wife cares the most for the “new” Hyun-cheol. I can’t wait to see how this dilemma is resolved but it’s sure to be bittersweet.

You Who Forgot Poetry: It was so hard to see Min-ho lash out this week even though he was angry at himself for realizing too late how he felt about Bo-young. What I’m hoping is that the loss leads to personal growth for Min-ho who needs to learn how to respect Bo-young and her decisions.

My Husband Oh Jak-doo: Finally, Jak-doo has taken matters into his own hands and is headed back to the country! He and Seung-joo are at their best together on their mountain and I’m looking forward to seeing their love story continue in that setting. It’s the jolt that the drama needed because as much as I enjoy Eric in Seoul, the romance between Seung-joo and Jak-doo is the reason that I come back week after week.

Suits: There are so many strong egos to deal with in this drama, which is what keeps Yeon-woo on his toes. I was disappointed in Ji-na’s petty behavior over a misunderstanding because it hurts me to see Yeon-woo suffer even more when he’s just trying to survive. The good news is that it looks like Kang-seok is warming up to his assistant, who may finally have someone in his corner.

I didn't watch much TV this week, only Suits episode 5 and 6 which I didn't understand half of it 😂
I was only waiting for yeon woo and Kim Gina to take off. I hope they won't go to on-and-off route like Mark Ross and Rachel Zane.

You Who Forgot Poetry: "911 What is your emergency?" "I need to report an assassination. A character assassination." *flips table*

Greasy Melo: I didn't feel sorry for Poong because he knew their relationship was on the outs, yet he insisted on marrying Dal Hee anyway. He was also kind of cocky acting like he was above head chef Master Wang. The gangsters' wacky humor reminds me of Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, which is not a good thing.

Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food: I've been waiting for shit to hit the fan. Jin Ah hysterically crying in front of Dad was So. Long. She was wailing like she was confessing to a crime. Before they went public, Jin Ah and Joon Hee kept sneaking around like they were having an affair.

Suits: Forgive me, Park Hyung Shik, for I am behind.

You know... I am with you in Jin-ah's crying. I thought she could have cried like that in front of kyung sun and I would have understand, because she betrayed her best friend ever by hiding her romantic relationship with Joon hee. But dad???? They never seemed to be that close before so that she could have been so sorry to have hidden her love life with dad!!! 😒
So, that was a crossed confused acting, which makes me wonder if the writer knows what she/he is doing.
I know this drama is directed by a famous PD... I am not an expert so that I can recognize so much directing quality. But I studied literature and this writer... is not so good.

As an spectator I feel empty in many places when I think about this drama, and my day dreams are better than what gets through the screen. 😖

Again: what a pity!

A poem a day
I understand all the complains, I understand all the praise. But personally I am still looking forward to watch this show. I am still a Yeliner, and I find dr. Ye with Bo young totally ok. I am not happy with Min ho now and where I could have understood why he would tease her before, even to the extreme of humiliate her or make her fall, because he is immature, I don't understand now why he hurt her again because he is immature. His first "petty" behaviour she could easily forgive, and we did it too, because he became better, but now... how can she forgive him now?? Me, I would probably never want to be friends with a person like him. I am upset with Min ho.

Pretty noona
I hate the mother since ep. 1, and in these last episodes I hate her more. Not good for a fav show to have such feelings, because it means I won't watch it again... 😖😠😖 What a waste! Jung Hae in is there! And still, the writer didn't have better ideas how to create conflict... very upsetting.
On a positive side, I still love the characters I love: Joon hee and his sister, Jin-ah at last. And actually, Jin-ah was stupid this week again. What was she thinking going to a blind date??? How could she justify? (Didn't get it, for there is no subs even after a week, almost... But 😑😑😑😑 thanks Netflix! For ruining the first time I watch pretty noona! 😠
The thing is... why is Jin-ah such a doormat?? I am a little bit upset with her too.

My Ajusshi
Oh my! 😱 Ep. 14... That end, wow! Wow... I won't spoil it for you, I can only say: wow.
I am amazed how clever also Dong hoon is. And how strong their connection is.
I cannot say how he likes her/loves her/ think of her... I can't understand how... But it is obvious he does. Whatever he feels, he feels it, a lot.
And Ji an is simply amazing. No words are enough. Favorite drama heroine so far... Every time she is on screen I have to watch, even if she doesn't say anything. That is a powerful acting!
This show! I would watch it over again. Here I am not upset with anybody 😀😂😬😀

You know what? My Ajusshi has been dividing camps - the romantic and the platonic.

I already sensed romance since episode 7 when he was asking about her and she was running to catch him on time at the cafe. But DH been such a complex character to crack open and the writing of this drama is too good that projected so much ambiguity.

But came episode 14, the writing is on the wall. He loves her. He hardly breathes without her. His world crushing down the moment she is gone. Idk what kind of chemistry IU has with LSK but goodness, how could they made us feel so much when the two didn't even share a single scene together in this episode?

I am bracing myself for the last 2 episodes of heart wrenching moments.

GRAND PRINCE -- Enjoyed the show & cast. And the ending, which for me was nicely handled.

SUITS -- I'm enjoying this a lot. I've never seen the US version, which is fine.

LAWLESS LAWYER -- Looking forward to Lee Joon-gi.

MS. HAMMURABI -- Looking forward to Ryu Deok-hwan's post-military return.

Live: characters we care about. Yes! Some writers can bring characters to life, yet other shows give us flat, cheap characters without depth or life.

My Ahjusshi is still on hold. I'm waiting for last week's episodes of Mistress to be completely subbed.

- Completed -

Grand Prince: I will remember Joo Sang Wook's performance and female characters like Roo Shi Gae, Mom and the servant. They were all delightful to watch even if the plot

Live: One of my most anticipated 2018 drama and it didn't deceive me once. Thank you to the cast, the production team and writer Noh Hee Kyung for this fantastic drama about cops !

Love Returns: After skipping a few episodes, I can gladly say I watched my first daily drama. Well, it sure did raise my blood pressure but some characters were endearing and Mrs. Kim stays my favorite character.

You Drive Me Crazy: It's a cute friends-to-lovers set-up and I hope to see this pairing again one day.

- Currently watching -

4 wheeled restaurant: ep 7.

A Poem A Day: ep 1. I think my favorite moment is when the other trainee guy keeps telling Minho not to touch his crocodile in case it will fall off HAHA

Hana Nochi Hare: HanaDan Next Season: ep 3. The nostalgic feels~ I really like Oto, she's a nice funny girl who just wants to go safely through high-school. Haruto, C5's leader, auto-proclaimed protector of their high-school, Domyouji's fanboy and addicted to buying lucky charms brings a scent of freshness to his role model with his awkwardness and more approachable side. Tenma, Oto's childhood friend and fiancé, Haruto's rival concerning their respective high-schools, sweet guy who loves Oto, has an evil step-mother. She did nothing for now but I can recognize an evil step-mom at any time.

Koe Girl: ep 4. It's my refreshing and relaxing series of the week !

Miracle That We Met: ep 14. I seriously don't know it well end for both families. Someone will be hurt and I don't want it.

My Husband Oh Jak Doo: ep 18. My precious Eric <3 I never thought before watching this drama that mountains could me a romantic place !

Oh My General: ep 47. I'm only watching to see the ending because I'm less interested in the current plot.

Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food: ep 12. Uggh we finally meet JH and SK's dad. I still don't know what to think of him but I felt JH at the end of the episode.

Shall We Live Together: ep 16. I'm always angry watching Hyo Seob's kids reaction to his relationship with Mi Yeon. Especially the eldest daughter who doesn't have good eyes for men imo. Well, unless her fiancé grows up and stops being a mama boy, I can't support their relationship. The hospital storyline bores me to death and I always fast-forward all of the divorce daughter's scenes. The twin brother has my empathy since he's working with that jerk but I can see a weird bromance forming. The intern has a good development so far and I like her interactions with jerky boss.

Wok of Love: ep 4. Lots of things happen and I need more episodes to know if I'm that invested in characters. Jang Hyuk and Jung Ryeo Won play such crazy characters I love them ! Junho's kitchen scenes remind me of the manga Food Wars which portrays cuisine as an epic sport. I love that part of the drama the most.

4 wheeled restaurant: ep 7. Adding to Wok of Love, I'm getting a good amount of delicious food on my scream with this variety show :p

Marry Me Now is a badly written and directed drama. Acting is below average. average music. Lacks logic and has superficial characters. Mi Yeon and Hyo Seob's relationships stands because writer paid more attention to it. You feel like they are couple. Rest of the characters are just there to chirp few lines here and there and job done. Livelihood earned.

The onky thing good about the show is the issues it tackles.
Old couple
Old female to younger male. Superior female to inferior male
Impotency of ex-husband
Divorced Daughter with a child
Divorced female having a thing with Doctor Bro - future scenario
Fat shaming

Greasy Melo/Wok of Love -- Eps 1-2 could have been just ep 1--let's get this whacky trio together already! Kinda slow to start and felt just a little off. But really, no amount of bad editing or weird pacing could make me turn away from Jang Hyuk, Junho and Jung Ryeo-won on my screen. Jang Hyuk especially is good--this man sparkles in every role, I am amazed. Junho feels like he hasn't quite found his vibe yet, but I think he'll be just fine and will settle in fully. Jung Ryeo-won is magic.

Rich Man, Poor Girl-- This show is like a buffet of every K drama trope--Asshat CEO, buttery second lead, scrappy naive candy, wrist grabs, makeovers, chosarangs.... And we're only in the second ep, folks. It feels like this should have come out in 2008, but I choose to believe they're leaning into the cliche on purpose, cause with a title like that why not? The acting is SOO green but the two leads seem to be putting their whole hearts into the performance and so I find them adorable. And there is good chemistry and an interesting dynamic between them (man who can't remember faces meets girls who has a perfect memory) and a strange mystery of identity underlying it all. I am gonna keep going with this one and think I'll enjoy it.

Chicago Typewriter-- I have one episode left and I am sad to see it go! This drama was such a cut above most dramas! Written, directed, acted brilliantly. It makes me wish we'd see so many more dramas set in this time period and written with such care and craft. The depth of the characters, the expert weaving of the two timelines, the mystery that was revealed little by little. I loved that romance was there, but did not overshadow the overall friendships and camaraderie of the trio. I will never forget Yoo Ah In squealing and running around his house as Go Kyung Po kept popping up out of nowhere. Or that kiss. YOWSA.

I concur with all the compliments for CHICAGO TYPEWRITER. I consider it one of the best dramas of 2017. Excellent performances all around.
I watched it on Viki. I have mentioned before that the subbers there handled that drama almost with reverence. They included a lot of explanatory notes. They did a great job.

I feel like the editing in the first ep of Greasy Melo was choppy. Junho did well I think, but the editing kind of made his character seem a little bit all over the place. I'm loving the idea of a satire on melo tho, so I'm definitely following this for now.

Hi @ultramafic. Last night after posting my comment I watched again episode 9 from CHICAGO TYPEWRITER. I wanted to revisit the scene where Jin-oh and Se-joo take the city tour and stand across from Gwanghwamun. I remembered that scene as very moving and it still is second time around.
The bonus is that the end this episode has the kiss scene which I had forgot. Thanks for letting me go down memory lane.

I rolled my eyes and click "pause" a few minutes in episode 17 when Qung-hui insisted on public display of affection to announce to the whole filming crew that they are together despite how comfortable Xiao-fei was (the professional me would be furious if my new boyfriend pulls a move like that!)

After sitting through all that angst, tears and snots of e15 and e16 I just didn't think the show is rewarding me enough cute for me to keep watching (the cute is even starting to annoy me!) I think I just got too impatient for Qing-hui's growth and at epi17 he still remained very immaturish in his way of love that I felt like I just couldn't get behind the OTP anymore. And oh, the mom.

Is it worth binge watch the last few? If you @leetennant say the ending is satisfying, I know watching them with your comments will help me get through the end.

This show has helped me learned about my drama watching ways.....it is rare to for me to love a show so much that I can hate watch it the way it deserves.

After dropping My Dear Boy I was so happy to be watching a very mature Joon-hee in Pretty Noona. The header pic for this post is a very close representation of me watching the OTP for the first 10 episodes but without the wedding dress.

Just when I thought to myself "yes, this is how you do a perfect noona romance", the writer made Jin-ah stupid. I mean I just nodded my head when she called herself stupid for getting into her ex's car, but when she went to the sogaeting I wanted to pull my hair our with that nonsensical logic to appease the mom. Then she went to meet his dad???? So now you betrayed your lover and your best friend's wishes?

I couldn't even enjoy the pretty OTP moment in epi12, and it was not because the OST for that scene is yes, the song that shall not be named. All I could think is you were holding that umbrealla waiting by his door so you wouldn't get wet, and now you wanted to have fun getting wet? There is something in the rain alright, and I don't know if I want to find out what it is. And oh, the mom.

I never would have guessed that by epi12 the reason I would want to keep watching Pretty Noona is workplace sexual harassment and my favorite character would be the brother.

I guess the moral of the story for both shows are:
1) Little brothers are the best
2) Dads are useless
3) Moms are the worse
4) Also bosses want to get into your pants. Maybe Jin-ah's bosses would also just drop dead.

I haven't seen 11 and 12 yet because I watched a bit of 11 raw and the Mum was out of control so I decided to wait till next week and watch four.

But, yes, watching Pretty Noona made me realise why My Dear Boy had lost me. Watching Derek Chang run around Taipei announcing his epic love to everybody when they hadn't even been on a date was excruciating.

1

Aigoo...declaring his love to the whole city without having gone on a date reminds me of him telling his family about his love for her before she ever acknowledged her feeling to him...

Ain't enough lobster pasta in the world is ever gonna make me feel good about the portrayal of this romance, @leetennant

3

I just finished watching MDB today. Ehh, nothing much happened in episode 19 & 20, aside SPOILER from An Qinghui tried to find Xiaofei and and the mom suddenly got a wake up call and repent (?), perhaps due to her old age, she softened up a lot. But I kinda melt because even after 5 years, Qinghui is still loyal to Xiaofei. I'm a sucker for loyalty 😁

Hehe mom softens up due to senility, @noobita? That's quite a character development retrograde 😆

So there is a 5-year time jump? Did the show is is withholding his growth for us to see? Sigh....that's what I was begging for the first freaking 16 hours of the show! But I only have myself to blame for unrealistic expectation from a show called My Dear Boy.

Alright, Quin-hui, kudos to you for being devoted to "Sister Auntie." You still gave me cute before I turned too bitter to fully embrace your boyish charm. Thank you, Derek Chang, for your arms and the stylist who is not reluctant to dress you in all those tank tops.

Well I watched 18 and it was terrible.

I realised these two people had talked about having a relationship, announced they were having a relationship and and then decided to end a relationship - but had never actually had a relationship . It was infuriating to watch. Also 18 is 95% flashbacks and dream sequences and the An Quinhui didn't disown his mother.

What I’m watching

APAD For me, this drama was broken when Min ho was hit on the crossing by the motorbike. Not because my ship sank but because of the way it sank. Had Bo Young chosen to meet Dr Ye instead of Min ho, I would have liked that (you know, let the girl make the call). But now, the stupid accident felt totally contrived, a complete Deus ex machina, the hand of the writer only too obvious, and I found myself wondering ‘why did the writer do it like that?’ And even though I came up with an answer that satisfied me, the illusion of the drama (that I was watching people make tough choices) was shattered and it was impossible to get it back. Instead of thinking: why is Min ho being such a pain in ep 14, I thought: why has the writer reversed his character development? The characters don't seem like people anymore but purely the writer’s marionettes for her to move around as she pleases. When you can see the strings, it’s not a good thing.

Live Perfect series, perfect ending. So real and that contrast is what probably made me (unfairly?) annoyed with APAD even more. As @mary said, this feels like a documentary because no action or outcome is fake. There are no geniuses, only heroes in a very human way. My heart got cut open and stitched back together, over and over again. 18 Episodes and no character was wasted. Everybody had their time to shine. So brilliant. I loved the ending. Especially Jeong-o’s little wink.

Switch I don’t actually know why I keep being entertained by this but I am. It’s not doing anything new or innovative, but it’s fun and not taking itself too seriously. It helps that the goodies are winning over the baddies on a regular basis. But… I wished they would stop planning their next moves in that interrogation room! I’m sure it’s got microphones and cameras in it. Find a better meeting place, people!

Greasy Melo Watched the first two episodes and they were funny and interesting enough. Love those three actors and I loved Jealousy Incarnate, so I’ve still got high hopes.

«Had Bo Young chosen to meet Dr Ye instead of Min ho, I would have liked that»
What do you mean?
I felt, if Min ho would have called her first, she wouldn't have seen dr. Ye that night because she would have agree on meeting Min ho. But it doesn't mean she would have accepted Min ho. She was already on the Yeline again, after they clarify their misunderstanding.
Maybe dr. Ye would have thought it over, his confession... we don't know. I think he was pretty resolved and he would have done it the following day.
Min ho... well, I must agree he had been used badly by the writers. But on the other hand, it could be credible that he turned that way, because that is more or less how he was from the beginning. Yet, I get what you say about he being a marionette and I don't like that either.
Let's wait and see if they fix him by the finale.

What I meant with it being BY's choice, is if (for example) she'd talked to Dr Ye on the phone, then Min ho called her and she'd said: Sorry, MH, I can't meet you, I'm doing something else.

Or if Mh had called her, they'd arranged to meet, but then BY cancelled on him when Dr Ye also wants to talk to her.

I would have liked it if it had been BY's choice to meet Dr Ye instead of MH that evening, and gets to hear Dr Ye's confession.

Yeah, that's true, but she could have called MH not to come see her, rather than have him hit by 🛵.

The 🛵 is the bit I've got a problem with.

3

@cloggie I suppose she could've done that. But if I remember correctly, minho was insistent on meeting her. That's why I guess she agreed to meet him. Otherwise I'm pretty sure she wouldn't have met him. And if the timelines are correct, when she was meeting Ye, the accident happened.
But I agree that the MOD was lazy writing. What would've been better was after meeting ye, she could've cancelled on minho or she could've met him and when he confessed, she would tell him the truth. So that we wouldn't have to endure ep 14.

2

Yeah @superwhopotterlock that would have been a better way of doing it. I would have really liked for her to have just told Min ho (and rejected him) instead of these guessing games.

Like @superwhopotterlock said, she agreed first with dr. Ye, and told MH she couldn't.
It wasn't illogical...she Didn't even know what Jae wook had to say, and that is also why she agreed to see Min ho afterwards. Min ho wrote her saying he couldn't make it because of the 🏍. And actually what I liked about it was that she took it very lightly (of course, being so happy with herself and Jae wook) she was like "ok, whatever" in the text message.
I mean, think about it again. They are neighbors, they live next door. She could still have said, see you home. But she didn't. She didn't need to write Min ho and and cancel because she now was happy with dr. Ye. They didn't go on a date that night. If min ho wouldn't had been hit, she would have met him as well, because she is a friend, but the outcome would have been the same, except Min ho would have known sooner.
I am a mess explaining myself. My point is: your problem with BY's choice doesn't really exist. She didn't have to choose. Almost all would have been the same, but in different order

@javinne, please don't misunderstand me! Sorry if I didn't express myself clearly but I didn't think BY's actions were illogical at all.

I do not have a problem with BY's choice.

I have a problem with MH being randomly hit by 🛵

And I was just coming up with some ways in which the writer could have had Mh be rejected without invoking MoD.

I'm sure there are many better ways they could have done it, than what I suggested. I would actually have really liked @superwhopotterlock's suggestion ^^ where there was no 🛵, Mh confessed and just got turned down.

1

Ok @cloggie... thanks for your answer.
The worst of all is that poor BY didn't know anything. Didn't know Min ho liking her, getting her the book she wanted, being hit by the MoD, being angry when finally going out she is dating Jae wook... nothing. That is why she told him, he should be happy for her. In her eyes, Min ho became a friend like Nam woo, but Min ho has actually never been a friend. He passed from kind of enemy to an admirer, and eventually having great expectations all by himself.
She will be very surprised when finding out.
And yes, maybe lazy writing. The MoD and then the chief Kim issue delayed Min ho's attempt to confess. He would have been turned down anyways, but now it is all messed up not in a nice way.
But, but, but... Min ho also messed up himself by himself before the MoD. So I don't think there could have been a way to spare him from being hurt, sadly.
Would he have turned also aggressive and inmature had she told him before (that is when he had confessed, if he had had a better chance)?
We will never know. With his temper, at least he would have been angry or distant.

Re switch- IKR! I half expect the camera to pan out and show a red blinking light under the desk. It's dangerous to discuss even in their own office! Why can't they discuss it in one of do chan's hideouts?
Also how come the minions could never find do chan's con artist friends again? Are they really that incompetent or the friends that clever?
Also when did do chan and his father have the conversation about tae woong's son?
So many plot holes. .

@cloggie,

I just watched the LIVE finale with subtitles, and it was dynamite. There was so much going on that I could not have guessed. It was worth the wait for the subs.

Now I feel a bit bummed out to no longer have the fine officers of Hongil to look forward to each week. They have been memorable and inspiring. What a fantastically satisfying drama.

Jung-o's wink was so cute. And I was relieved to find out that Yang-chon was okay and would be getting back together with Sang-soo -- YES! (Do I take it that he'll be able to run again after all?) Han-sol's apprehension of the chili rustler -- Har! And Sam-bo as a Kindergarten Cop bus driver -- nice. Will quit blathering for now. ;-)

APAD For me, this drama was broken when Min ho was hit on the crossing by the motorbike. Not because my ship sank but because of the way it sank.

I agree that I'm annoyed with the way my ship sank, but only in part for the reason you gave. The something came up plot device is trite and somewhat expected. My problem is that Bo-young didn't give it a second though when Dr. Ye confessed. Does Bo-young have any pride at all? Does she see her self worth? She could have at least made Dr. Ye sweat a little. I also find it hard to believe that it never crossed Bo-young's mind that Min-ho has a thing for her.

APAD -(Thoughts) : I wonder if the last few eps will focus on character development towards aspirations, fullfilling ones dreams (eg. BY's poetry), mending relationships with family (BY with half bro, Min Ho with parents, Ye Jin with ex-husband). It's like the emphasis on the side characters are slowly diminishing- which I;m fine with as long as they're not POOF gone in the final eps. Eg. Will Ye Jin ever tell her ex about her inability to conceive? Will she get over her doubt over this cippling issue? Why were such important issues introduced if it hasn't been retouched upon? What happened to Dr. Ye's betrayal past? Will Chief get a permanant job where his abilities are regognized and appreciated?

Mood: Meh 😑

Suits I loved ep 5- probably my fav so far because of how YW and KS were piled with 2 different cases and the friendship that brewing between them. The "Hyena" has entered the story as KS's equal who's considered a "Jaguar" so I'm wondering whether KS will stoop low to win and be a step forward.

Mood : Exciting/fast paced 🙌

Girls' Generation 1979 Loving this because of how sentimental and cosy it is. It's full of heart and navigating the last years of childhood and falling in love.

Mood : Comfy Joy ✨

Live Up To Your Name The romance has set in and the drama is still going strong. They've come to understand each other and the chc development is impressive. Loving it so much - a 2017 gem because it hasn't lagged once
Mood: Love 💖

Dropped: MTWM I just don't have time for this anymore, especially since I've realised that it's a 20 episoder and that the story has begun lagging. I'm hoping Chef Hyun Chul doesn't die in the end, though I see it as the only possible solution. He didn't deserve to die in the first place and both families will be devastated again.

On Hold: Mistress I loved the first 2 eps but the next eps haven't yet been subbed so 😭😭. The mystery was gripping and the ladies are fascinated. I need to know more!

For the most part, I wasn't massively impressed by Girl's Generation 1979... until I realised that is was actually a seriously clever character drama. Every character I thought of could be deeply analysed. (Also, Lee Jong-hyun is so cute.)

I went into GG1979 with expectations of a "spin off" type drama of the Reply series which is probably why I'm loving it so much. I knew there wouldn't be substantial plot but maybe it'd match the coziness of the Reply series- which it managed, despite being way shorter.
The characters are really growing on me because I feel where they're coming from and LJH is definitely a cutie 😉

@fencejumper Andy,

I loved LINGERIE GIRLS' GENERATION because of the music. I posted links on my fan wall to as much of the background music as I could hear well enough to identify, which was a lot. It is organized by episode. (I was a disc jockey on a college radio station in 1979, the year in which the drama is set, so the music is very familiar.) I live-watched while it was airing, so check the broadcast dates to know how far to scroll down. Enjoy. ;-)

The OTP is amazing because there's communication, understanding, love and it's not festered with anger, angst, bitterness or jealousy. I thing it's flown under many radars because I didn't know about Live Up until it was recommended by beanies. I'm trying to spread the love to all my friends but I think the medical aspect keeps them away, even if its handled extremely well, shows skill and ends up bringing the couple together. It's a very well written/acted drama.

You Who Forgot Poetry: I'm a little behind, and mainly just frustrated that the Alligator has somehow returned.

Live: Ah, Live, you beautiful thing. You leave me breathless.

Pretty Noona: No comment.

The Gentlemen of Wolgyesu Tailor Shop: It's done. It's done and now there's a void in my life. I thought I wouldn't find a weekend drama I could put on the same level as Five Kids, but this one definitely wrapped up better (minus the redemption of EVERY SINGE VILLAIN).

Love For a Thousand More: Woah, is this actually a good web drama?? I mean, it is still shallow and lazy like web dramas tend to be... But Hwang Seung-eon is honestly the most delightful I've ever seen her, and the drama didn't ignore the negative implications of immortality. It focused on her pain and loneliness to always be left behind. It was lovely. (Also, Jang Ki-yong is aces here!)

Hana Nochi Hare: I watched three episodes this week, one in raw because I couldn't wait that long! I love this so much! It's definitely my favourite of everything I'm watching. It's just so... Hana Yori Dango! I find even find the words to say how much this trash makes me happy.

I loved Five Children even tho I usually stay away from family dramas but I found Father Is Strange even better. The family really does grow on you- the angst is well managed and the oldest daughter is such a fiery ball of amazingness. The entire story rarely lags and everyone has proper development unlike most 50 episoders (evil MILs, no motivations, doormat heroines, angsty last minute birth secrets, redemption for everyone- rarely sastifying, horrible payback).
You should try it out!

I definitely couldn't stomach a weekend drama if it weren't primarily family-orientated. That leaves room for multiple heart-warming stories that won't necessarily drag.
I usually find that the first few episodes don't draw me in at all - but if I stick it out longer than that, I find myself warming to everything. There were loads of characters in Wolgyesu that I didn't appreciate, but there was enough heart in the story to keep me going. There were evil MILS, but they were hilariously ineffective, and the heroine was a bit of a doormat, but it was easy to understand why and she began to find her footing after meeting her man. Most of all, Wolgyesu had a poignant side I didn't expect, and ended on that kind of note. It was just really lovely in the end, I recommend it!

IU is wonderful in this drama. If Moon Lovers was any close to the nuance and depth of the original Scarlet Heart both drama and novel, she would have shined just as brightly. What a wasted opportunity.

I feel like I've been dropping shows rather than watching them lately. Dropped: Seducer, Jak Doo, Switch, Good Witch, Evergreen, Grand Prince... Nothing can hold my attention until the end. Then I came upon You Drive Me Crazy and was surprised to find Dimples (Kim Sunho) in it so immediately wanted to watch it.

And no thanks to the lack of news on this site about new dramas and such, I went in not knowing what to expect. But the first 30 minutes episode hooked me in right away. I had wanted it to be just a filler as I do my work, but was so engrossed in the story to care about work. Worst was, I found out it was just a drama special and is only 4 episodes (2 episodes technically because total 2 hours). I was both disappointed and maybe a little glad that I actually managed to finish a drama for the first time since I'm Not a Robot ended in Jan.

It was also the first time that the characters in a drama had jobs that were not typical drama jobs. i.e. Eun Sung was an interpreter and Rae Wan was a artist/painter. It was really interesting to see the interpreter at work and being a translator myself, I understood some of the struggles she was going through. Like when a client rattled off a poetic line, I went "OMG" and my husband said, "What?" And I said, "How is she going to translate that?!" I totally understood what went through her mind.

ONGOING

A Poem a Day: The show has become somewhat of a yeah, whatever kind of drama. Why do so many dramas feel the need to go to hell after you've become invested? Granted, I never really loved this drama and things could have been much worse. At least the storylines outside of the love storylines are still engaging enough.

Cinderella Chef: Seriously thinking about dropping this drama. The really bad Google Translate subs aren't helping matters.

PICKED UP

Moonshine and Valentine: Words can't express how happy I was to see this C-Drama on both DramaFever and Viki. I've watched the first two episodes and based on that, the show isn't that great, but it's not bad either. It has the potential to be good. No, I'm not in denial. Yes, I'm so happy to see Huang Johnny in a lead role of a mainstream drama. Hoping it picks up both positive steam and attention.

BTW, that was a pretty cool car chase scene, right? And I actually really liked the historical aspect at the beginning. That was shot quite well. One more thing, is the ott/crazy mom becoming more of a thing in dramas at the moment kind of like the use of English lyrics songs? If so, I hope that trend goes by quickly.

Wok of Love (Greasy Melo): Sure, there's awesome food porn, but there's something about this drama that feels off and that's aside from the humour that I don't really appreciate.

The opening episodes were a little hard to follow at times, with so many characters and just a string of vignettes loosely strung together, but that’s nothing new. I think it’ll take a few episodes to really get invested, because right now it’s just funny farce and food porn (so much foooooood).

I think @girlfriday summed it up well. As much as I appreciate Junho taking on different roles and drama genres, I hope that he takes a break after this one. For me, there's such a thing as too much of a good thing.

ON HOLD

Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food: Seems like this drama has taken a hit with both @girlfriday and @javabeans. I haven't watched this weeks episodes yet because I really am not looking forward to watching crazy mom's machinations. I might actually wait for the drama to finish and binge watch the last six (6) episodes.

My Ajusshi: I really am not in the mood to watch this drama either. I guess I also need a break from the heavy hitting reality dramas. Hopefully I'll pick it back up before it ends.

Waikiki and Live: I'll finish these someday.

I'm enjoying "Secret of the 3 kingdoms" thanks to you.
If it wasn't on your list last week I wouldn't have tried it.

I love the women. A patriarchal society does not mean that women didn't play strong roles in running the country and the home.
They weren't as visible as the men but they were the brain, force and strength behind the crown and home.
History were written by scholars (men) so they hardly ever give credit to women in that era.

It's not as historically accurate like "The Romance of the 3 kingdoms" but it's easy to follow even with the fictional twists.

Grand Prince finale, mini review: A drama that didn't invent anything new, and became exciting for me only in the final 5 episodes. An interesting take on history or history as it "should" have been, so I was satisfied with the ending. Jo Sang Wook was the best actor by far; he made me understand, fear and pity his character. Everyone else acted better around him, especially Jin Se Yeon, who was otherwise mediocre. Yoon Shi Yoon successfully showed his journey from cute princey to rugged survivor, though his character lacked charisma (maybe I prefer him in modern dramas?). In my mind Ru Shi Gae and Gi Taek went backpacking around China at the end.

A Poem A Day ep. 14: Will wait to see how this ends before commenting.

Nirvana in Fire 2 ep. 25: Not as good as NIF1, but it's kept me entertained while I wait for new dramas to get going. I'm sort of interested in trying Lawless Lawyer and Rich Man . Strangely, I'm not feeling the pull of Greasy Melo despite the Jang Hyuk+Junho double oppa factor- it could be exactly my kind of wacky or completely not... so I'll keep waiting.

But my crack for this week is obviously Wok of Love (a.k.a. Greasy Melo). Finished 4 eps in one sitting and now I'm in trouble for two obvious reasons: 1. the wait for new episode, 2. There is no jajangmyon where I live. This is just...perfect.

Truth be told, the title "Greasy Melo" made me doubt this drama at first, but I am relieved that it is actually about food. Hahaha.

Second crack is Suit.
Hello there, villain from "Mother"! Ooohhh...nice english. Not perfect, but way better than many actors'. He has nice voice. Hopefully he land on good, protagonist role next time? Yes?

Third Crack is Poetry.

I want Jang Hyuk to get the girl as well! But that bridge scene makes me doubt if they are the OTP of this drama. You know the standard, where the second lead is so perfect, so good, and is bound to have their heart torn to pieces yet miraculously survive? That sounds like Gangster Boss to me, rather than Seo Poong (who has had his heart broken).

But is it wrong to want Gangster Boss to have the girl anyway? ...Naaah. Besides, the show isnt over until it's over. Who knows?

Btw about onion...YES. Onions, shallots, and the like...thay all have gender (or so thay called). We use the ladies to cook and the males to repel evil spirits here.

Ahh.. ☺️ I’m happy that Our Husband and Seung Joo (ok not me, I’m fine) are finally back together and thank God they just leave Seoul for the mountain. I couldn’t have been happier for them. Eric is always funny and warm-hearted. Seems like nothing, no mak jang whatsoever, can separate me from this show until it’s very ending episodes..

Pretty Noona- just break up with the woman, Joon Hee. She’s just disgusting. I really mean it. I do t know but looking at her inconsistent actions and everything, her life is a mess because she’s the truck of doom herself. Nothing can prevent her from making dumb decisions since she made them again and again. She lied so many times and her actions are inconsistent, she’s considerate when the situation doesn’t require for it, and inconsiderate when it’s the other way round. Being with her, not to mention her family and crazy mother, would be an absolute promise for unhappiness. Leave it right there and just go to China. She’s just not worth all the mess.

THANK you for having such an understanding heart ☺️. Now I do think that I might be a bit stressed out cause I have seen two horrible mothers continuously. But what I hate the most in the latest two episodes of Pretty Noona is that the way the woman made her decisions. SPOILER: she has hold her ground that she’s not going to part with him no matter what happened or what her mother is going to react, and one day when her father fought for her she was angry at him for making her the center of attention and went on a blind date to satisfy the mother? What was the logic in that? AND she was so unclear in explaining why she did this to her friend, the older sis of her boyfriend. She lied so many times and even arranged a secret meeting with their father whom both her boyfriend and his sis hate so much. AND she arranged a secret meeting with him by turning down a chance to see a movie with him and lying to him that she was going home because her parents were sick and meeting their father instead?

What in the world was going on in her mind or logic I just can’t get it and don’t want to.

(The girl's father had an affair with his sister-in-law, the boy's mother). Any chance of that driving the mother's crazy behavior? She can't own up to infidelity but she has to separate the two lovers. Too much?

While that might be the case, I don’t think it’s the case here. I think that the mother is just unreasonably manipulative and wants to improve her, as well as other family members’ social status, by marrying off her only daughter to a prestigious family.

But it’ll be such a twist if it happens to be the reason you suggested. I just hope it won’t get that dramatic. 😅

My Ajusshi: Amazing.

Greasy Melo: Messy but with potential + Jang Hyuk!

You Drive Me Crazy: Cute. I'm a sucker for friends to lovers but could have done without the typical time jump at the end.

A Poem a Day: Still enjoying it but mostly for the supporting characters and patient stories.

You Drive Me Crazy- Love it, but I still think the FL sort of selfish, SPOILER I don't understand her reasoning to stay away from ML for idk, 1 year? That's too much. I think this is the case of when you love someone too much, you can even accept all their flaws and mistakes (but I'm not that forgiving). But anyway, the kiss(es) and the emotion under that apricot tree? Swoon~😜

Love Rerun- As much as I love Furukawa Yuki, my God, the FL is the textbook of doormat candy, it's 2018 for God's sake! Ffs a lot, nothing much happened each ep.

My Dear Boy- Welp, so many flaws (especially on Q3 episodes) but kudos to hero for staying loyal. But I still love it. I know the hero is childish (very), but the plot tries to prove that maturity plays a big role in every relationship and I'm glad the hero matured enough (eventhough it's late, lol) to be on the same level with heroine. But 5 years? Gosh.

Moonshine and Valentine- Nothing too unique but I enjoyed first 4 episodes, but 1st ep is too cartoonish. I sense the plot will slow down soon. I'm more interested with the child counterpart story (it's too short!), they seem so innocent and playful but so in love. I like Victoria in this! The hero, not so much.

Rich Man Poor Woman korean version. Uhh,not feeling it. I don't even get the feeling the office is some sort of top IT company with high salary. The oyster is better than the ML. To play a lovable complicated jerk like Oguri in original drama, you need someone veteran. Or you know, people with good acting and emotional depth. Why my brain is telling me Chanyeol suits the character better though? LOL

I watched the first episode of Rich Man Poor Woman and I don't feel it either. I have seen many jerks CEO as drama lead before but I find this one particularly cruel and his workplace bordering on toxic.

I hate how he smiles when he humiliates people.

Yes this. I think in the original series the ML did the same thing (and the office rules is the same, when you can't come up with something new, you will be fired in certain period, immediately)but I didn't get the feeling he's being malicious, just that he's trying to be professional in a strict unfriendly way. But that's Oguri Shun for you, he can be a jerk, but a charming jerk. (this only works in drama though, hehe)

The korean version, the ML is downright cruel, like you said, and those unnecessary name-calling, cringe XD

Offscreen. All his maturity happened offscreen. Everything happened offscreen. Even the main OTP happened offscreen. Time jumps are such a crutch. So lazy.

I can feel your frustration with this drama through your words 😂
I agree the time jump is such a lazy plot device and the characters tried to prove that they were having such a hard time in Australia while gaining work experience etc, I was like urmm I need to see that, there's no use in just talking. I feel like they should've reduced all the angst and filler started from ep 15 onwards and show their life in Australia instead.

I think the on-screen maturity of hero was only about work, and that too he crossed the line when he's being all giddy doing PDA in front of other crews, smh😯
