Premiere Watch: About Time, Miss Hammurabi, Sketch
by girlfriday
We’ve got a fresh onslaught of cable dramas on the way, two of them with a touch of fantasy. I wasn’t really expecting three new shows this week, but they always seem to sneak up on me.
About Time
Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Fantasy romance
Episode count: 16
Reasons to watch: This is the new fantasy romance from PD Kim Hyung-shik of the adorable, feel-good rom-com Twenty Again, so this is the premiere I’m most looking forward to. Lee Sung-kyung stars as a young woman who has the ability to see people’s “life clocks,” showing the remainder of their lifespan like a digital timer. One day she glimpses her own remaining time like a death sentence, but the moment she meets Lee Sang-yoon, her time starts flowing differently and she knows she needs to be around him in order to live. It’s as good a reason to force two people together as any, and they seem adorable together already just from the teasers alone, so I have good hopes for an easygoing romance full of heart.
Miss Hammurabi
Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Legal drama
Episode count: 16
Reasons to watch: Miss Hammurabi is a novel adaptation that’s being penned for the small screen by the original author, and it’s also a bit of a departure for PD Kwak Jung-hwan, who’s famous for his action-heavy thrillers like The K2, Chuno, and Runaway Plan B. It seems like your standard underdog legal drama about doing the right thing and using the law to help those in need, but taken from the perspective of courtroom judges this time. I guess that makes it close to Nothing to Lose, though I think this one will veer less comical and more earnest. Go Ara and L headline as the two young judges, mentored by veteran Sung Dong-il. I can’t say I have high expectations for this cast (mostly I’m still really worried about L carrying a lead), but I will be on the lookout for clips of Sung Dong-il and Go Ara’s Answer Me father-daughter reunion. One inside joke and I’ll be happy.
Sketch
Time slot: Friday & Saturday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Action thriller
Episode count: 16
Reasons to watch: I don’t know if you can call this thriller a fantasy, but Sketch does have a supernatural element in its premise. It’s about a detective who can draw a crime scene before it happens, and the investigation team that uses her prophetic sketches in order to stop the crimes from happening. Lee Sun-bin is the seer/sketcher, Rain and Lee Dong-gun are rival investigators out in the field, and at the helm is PD Im Tae-woo of the quirky ensemble comedy Yoo-na’s Street. I think this drama won’t just be a procedural, which is promising—it’ll focus on the butterfly effect of stopping these crimes before they’re meant to happen, which we all know from watching Signal can lead to even worse consequences. Other reasons to watch: Rain running around being a badass. Should I have led with that?

I am sure these will be pretty good, but I seem to lean towards romantic comedies so I will probably look at About Time first. I'm the most intrigued with that one.

I will check About Time for my girl LSK, but not feeling the pairing or the story so far based on the teasers. It would be nice to be wrong, because I miss a good romance drama.
Also, I will check Hwang Jung Eum's drama, since I like her and Nam Goong Min a lot. I think they have potential to be very funny as a couple, and they look great together. :)

Choosing About time! Maybe comedy hijinks will ensue! I am all in for something on the comedy side... have had my share of melo and procedural cop shows!

Wasn't expecting Miss Hammurabi to be so adorable! I loved it from the first minute.
Haven't started About Time yet as I want to be alone with no interruptions.

I watched about time and miss hammu and I enjoyed both. Cinematography wise and acting wise About time is better. However I found the writing of Miss hammu more interesting. I will watch both for now as they both have my interest.
Also Lee Sung Kyun's really sings well assuming it was her voice during the performance in ep 1. Also she's very very pretty.
Finally I'm watching more k-dramas than C-dramas again.
My k-list now has :
Mistress (y subs so slow TT)
Lawless attorney (badass leads)
Come and hug me (my favourite plz stay good)
About time (Lee Sang Yoon dimples and pretty LSK)
Miss Hammurabi (beautiful L and less whiny Go Ara - Hwarang horrible flashbacks will haunt me forever)
Will give Nam goong min's new drama a try though I'm a bit weary of screechy hwan jeung eum in rom coms.
Also secretary Kim and the robot one I'm looking forward to it. So overall May has been a good month for k-dramas.

Oh and Greasy Melo. I like the wacky characters but 20 eps make me fear a draggy plot in the second half so I hope it stays good.

So far, Miss Hammurabi is really fun! I tried About Time but didn't really feel anything for it. I'll probably try again later.

ABOUT TIME should work 😎
Lee Sang-yoon has worked with OTPs close to his age and he always comes out as a charming, sensitive romantic lead. Think Lee Bo-young (Whisper & My Daughter Seoyoung); Choi Ji-woo in Twenty Again; Kim Ha-neul in On the Way to the Airport.😀
Lee Sung-kyung has earned her stripes both as 2nd lead (Doctors, Cheese in the Trap) and as lead actor. She was great with Nam Joo-hyuk in Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bokjoo. And she sings well.😀
Above all, I see this paring --LEE SANG-YOON & LEE SUNG-KYUNG working wonderfully. 😎😎😎
LSY was totally convincing as OTP to the younger Goo Hye-sun in Angel Eyes, one of the most memorable love stories I've ever seen.

Loved the first 2 episodes of Miss Hammurabi. Also the songs were pretty great. Can anyone please tell me the name of the English song that plays throughout the episodes?

I watched 1st episode of About Time last night. I thought it was interesting but then I lost my enthusiasm and dropped it. I love LSY but I'm not feeling his acting. Miss Hammurabi surprised me! I loved the characters. I've been looking for drama to replace My Ahjussi and I think I found my new kdrama weekly fix :)

Miss Hammurabi- I saw first two episode... I didn't really like it because it forces you to greatly suspend your belief of the Korean judicial process...
About Time- I don't know how to feel about this... I didn't like it but I didn't hate it either..
Sketch- I haven't seen this yet, hopefully it will be good. I love good thrillers.

I tried out Miss Hammurabi for Myung and wasn't impressed with the first episode because I got a little frustrated with Oh-reum and her idealism but boy was I blown away by the second ep <3 I'm totally sold. so they started showing a different side of Oh-reum right off the bat, she obviously changed from the privileged rich kid that Ba-reun remembered and that explains a lot about her because of how she grew up, the community she's been living with. it kinda explains why she has so many soft spots too but that aside it got SO CUTE when his "one-sided" crush got revealed to go both ways gahhhh im kinda happy there's no second lead to complicate the relationship so that there'll be more progress + more time to focus on the cases and the judges themselves. honestly appreciated how her overzealousness and somewhat irresponsibility led to real negative consequences and ended up burdening her colleagues, this got pretty realistic and props to the show for not over-glorifying this naiveness and idealism, really hate it when sometimes just a change in attitude/some sincerity brings results, effort needs to be put in first to understand the system and understand why it's in place before trying to go around/beat it, seems to me what a real life judge would have to undergo. will keep watching!

Ok, for a hilarious moment, your "go both ways" had a completely different meaning for me and I madly trying to ship our female lead an sexy secretary and THEN I understood.
YES to everything you nicely said about her naiveness being problematic and shown as such, instead of glorified like most shows do, it was my favorite part of an awesome second episode.

I hope dramabeans will recap Miss Hammurabi. I've seen episode 1 for now and am really interested in the show. However, since I come from another country, I am not familiar with Korea's judicial system. How come very young lawyers get to be judges? Hope I get an answer. Thanks.

Lol db has become an advertisement place for Korean makeup products. There’s no more detailed info or news about casting or big events that have shaken up the Korean entertainment industry like the #metoo cases or even deaths. They make recaps only about the most popular dramas and dramas where the staff’s fave actors are going to be in. After the update, dramabeans has become difficult to use and a very boring website.

Yes, everybody should be talking more about this. The amount of ads we now have versus the very small content has become ridiculous. This is almost a forum, it should have all the qualities of a real forum.

We all know this is happening, but I think most of us are trying to be patient. Something is obviously happening behind-the-scenes. @mary has opened up a little bit about the issues they're facing, but I do wish they'd be more transparent with us. I think they bit off more than they could chew with the site update and all of the additions, and they're struggling with how to deal with everything. I don't know much more than that.
We all miss having more recaps, something they have been slacking on since December or so, and more news. Back in November we had 8 shows being recapped--full recaps, not just Open Threads. Now that My Ajusshi has ended, we only have one show being fully recapped. I also noticed that LollyPip is the only one doing full recaps now and that has me worried and confused. Even if JB and GF are too busy with other things to recap, what happened to all of the other minions?
I still love this site and spend way too much time here, but it's the Beanie community that keeps me coming back rather than the content. I'm really hoping things will start to improve soon. Again, I'm trying to be patient and understanding... but it's been a while now since these problems began.

If they don't want to talk about it I think it's their choice, I wish they would because people are curious about it, but it's fine if they don't explain. I just think making money from that many ads when it's a place most people only come back because of the free posts from beanies, is exploiting this community. Sorry, if I'm saying something silly, anyone please contradict me, but otherwise, just being honest.

It would honestly be so much better if they went back to the old dramabeans, the one we still had in 2016. It was easier to use and most important, this site used to have interesting content, something to really discuss about. I don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes, and since they decided to go through this renewal of this website, I respect that. However, it’s making me less and less motivated to come back. DB used to be my primary source of drama info and recaps. I used to read the opinions and insights too because they always had a different perspective. Now I’m seeing that even some beanies have stopped visiting because of these precise issues.

Omg I made a comment about this (an maldita too) and we were having the same thoughts! I certainly find it odd and I really wish as a long time lurker/reader that they would tell us readers what’s going on. Why the lack of K-entertainment updates, casting news and recaps? This used to be the most versatile K-drama oriented website but now there aren’t many other blogs like this, except maybe koalasplayground but there are no recaps, just K-ent and C-ent and occasionally J-ent news.

I m not Korean, so my knowledge about the system mostly come from googleing (it may incluede incorrect information; so feel free to correct it)
==================
Up until 2017, it is possible to become a judge around late-20 in SK
There were 2 ways to practice law in SK between 2009 - 2017
The old system ( up to 2017)
Get undergad degree (be it in law or whatever subject one wants) and take Korean Bar Association's National Judicial Examination.
After passing the examination (which has a pass rate of less than 5%) must study for an additional two-year training course at Korea’s Judicial Research and Training Institute and pass a final exam before they are admitted to practise.
The top 1% of those who pass the final exam after 2 years training would be appointed as judges (with opt out option to become prosecutors or lawyers). Top 3% would be prosecutors (with opt-out to be lawyers). The rest would become lawyers.
The new system (since 2009)
Get undergrad degree, then JD. After that one need to take Lawyer Admission Test (which is distinct from the Korean Bar Examination); once they pass this exam, they are eligible to practise law in Korea.
After at least 3 years practicing law, a lawyer can apply for Korean Bar Examination to become prosecutors or judges.
From the drama, Oh Reum and Ba Reun follow the old system.
In BR’s case, 4 years LLB (+ 2 military duty )+ 2 year training, he can become a judge at 26 or 28.
In OR’s case, she is major in music, learns about the Bar exam by herself. She may pass the Bar 1 year after BR, so he is her senior although they are the same age.
By the way, more than 50% of SK civil cases do not have lawyers. SK judges in civil cases act more like magistrates to settle dispute between 2 parties than give verdicts like US system.

Watch the first episode of all three of them, I'm gonna stick with About Time. It's a typical cheesy romance drama, but it's not trying too hard for being deep or meaningful, so I know what I'm getting.
Miss Hammurabi, I can't take it seriously since the judges are too young for being judges.
Sketch, dropped because it killed off character that I like in the second episode. I also don't want to see potential romance happen between rain and the sketch girl.
