You Who Forgot Poetry: Episodes 1-8
by Saya
I started this show partly on a whim, and my interest in young actors Jang Dong-yoon and Shin Jae-ha persuaded me to try it out even though I wasn’t sure if there was really any other draw.
I’ve been giving Lee Yu-bi the side-eye since the shambles that was Scholar Who Walks the Night, and watching the first couple of episodes of Poetry, I wanted to drop it SO many times, because! Seriously! Not one good thing happens to her!
But then something changed. Lee Yu-bi’s character and our protagonist, WOO BO-YOUNG, starts pushing back and asserting herself, and there’s something so charming about her that you can’t help falling in love, even while you’re simultaneously crying in embarrassment.
EPISODES 1-8 WEECAP
Once a poetry-loving liberal arts student, Bo-young became a physiotherapist instead for the sake of reliable employment since she has to support her mom. She’s a hard-working contract-employee at Shinsun Hospital, and wants nothing more than to be taken on as a full-timer. That means she’s got the worst of both worlds, because her seniors are always taking advantage of her, while her juniors look down on her.
It gets worse when two of her college hoobaes, SHIN MIN-HO (Jang Dong-yoon) and KIM NAM-WOO (Shin Jae-ha) arrive in her department as trainees. Min-ho turns out to be the guy she liked back then, and she’d wooed him with poetry, only to be unkindly rejected.
Things finally look up when she gets a patients’ choice award for most friendly staff member, but it’s quickly and cruelly taken away since it’s only for full-timers. To compound her misery and humiliation, her history with Min-ho also comes out and everything is terrible. But she finds solace and strength in poetry and decides to give it all another shot.
Her new start coincides with a new addition to their department in the form of hotshot Dr. YE JAE-WOOK (Lee Joon-hyuk), who used to work at a prestigious university hospital. We learn that he left after testifying against a colleague for medical malpractice, but what really drove him away was discovering that his girlfriend and love of his life was cheating on him—with that same doctor. (I’m not sure if there was a revenge angle there, or if it was coincidence.)
Jae-wook seems rigid and cheerless at first, but he set shippers’ hearts on fire by noticing how hard, how much, and how well Bo-young worked, and also how others took advantage of her. He has a habit of prefacing nearly everything he says with, “Shall I give you some advice?” but his advice to Bo-young is always something warming and encouraging, so how can you blame her (and three-quarters of the fandom) for falling for him?
Elsewhere, in the radiology department, HAN JOO-YONG (Park Sun-ho) has been assigned to work with department outcast, KIM DAE-BANG (Defconn), who suffers from pathological indecision which drives everyone bananas, including Joo-yong.
Joo-yong is no less an outcast, an entertainment junkie who watches waaay too much TV when he’s meant to be studying, and the men slowly become closer thanks to their mutual pity of each other. (There’s also a fistfight over who is the bigger loser, lol, and suffice it to say that it was a fight with no winners.)
When impoverished Nam-woo is left homeless, Jae-wook pulls some strings and gets both trainees housed in hospital accommodation. That turns out to be together with Joo-yong—who was also their former college-mate and deeply ashamed of the fact. But for all that, don’t they seem to suit each other perfectly? Ha. They all kind of deserve each other, and I actually mean that in a nice way. I think.
Back in the physiotherapy department, after working alongside Bo-young for a while, Min-ho not only comes to respect her, but also… like her (very much against his will). Except he immediately turns petty when he realizes she likes Jae-wook and does everything he can to make her look bad in front of him.
Thanks to Min-ho’s provocations, us Ye-liners are crying this week because Jae-wook’s rigid facade seems to be cracking, and he’s been doing aaaalll sorts of things that are out of character for him, both in defending Bo-young and in seeking out her company.
It pushes Min-ho to finally admit to the boys (and himself) that he likes her, though he has yet to repent being such an ass.
COMMENTS
What’s great about all these characters is that they’re various combinations of petty, vain, silly, and at times, downright cruel, but the moment you begin to hate them, they reveal a vulnerable human side, a too-soft underbelly, that stops you from writing them off even if you haven’t quite entirely forgiven them.
This is true of Min-ho, who’s taken particular delight in torturing Bo-young whenever possible, yet there is something deeper going on beneath that frivolous surface, he just rarely lets himself go there. The second son in a family full of high-achieving doctors, he’s practically invisible to them, and though he’s rich, he’s starved of affection.
It’s also frequently true of Bo-young’s immediate seniors, Dr. KIM YOON-JOO (Lee Chae-young) and Dr. PARK SHI-WON (Kim Jae-beom), and especially so this week: Divorcee Yoon-joo struggles after coming face-to-face with her ex-husband for the first time since they split, and we learn she left him because she found out she couldn’t have children, though she never told him that.
Shi-won struggles with providing for his family. He does whatever he must to ensure his own survival and refuses to apologize for it, though I think he secretly hates himself a little. They’re complicated characters who are often unlikable and even unpleasant, but they remain sympathetic and emotionally accessible, and that’s what tugs the heart.
What did you guys make of this week’s developments? I’ve been firmly Ye-line since Jae-wook turned up, but I feel like the ending this week was kind of ominous. The show’s at its midpoint so the worm is definitely about to turn… but which way?

I actually like Min Ho as a character, which is no surprise because I inevitably developed fond feelings for all the characters. There were times I was just so annoyed by them, even Bo Young (she's an angel but I don't like hopeless victims), however they all have a marshmallow core or snarkiness to them that I found hard to ignore. And I like imperfect characters overall.
I don't mean to defend Min Ho but I don't see anyone mentioning this one trait I noticed about him so... yeah. I really liked that he's friends with Nam Woo. For all his shallowness, when I thought about it, I wondered why a rich, obviously immature guy would stay friends with down in the dumps Nam Woo. If he was so rich, wouldn't he have been pulled up by some poisonous asian rich clique? Maybe I've just been watching too many dramas. I guess I appreciate how he doesn't have that rich-poor social class mindset.
Regarding his dilemma with Bo Young as well, it's his own fault for not liking her before (hahaha) but I thought it was suitable that he said they weren't compatible back then because well, they weren't. She also was a little starry eyed then. (She only found out about his family situation after college? So she hardly knew him? The girl is worth more than a few nice words about her poetry interest and she was a little love blind me thinks.)
I think Min Ho is actually good friend material. Boyfriend material, I'm not quite sure. Probably not yet? Good thing I'm on all non-romantic ships for this drama. (Go radiologists! Go go Nam Woo-Lacoste! Go physical therapists! Go go dumb trio!)

I have posted this comment at one of the k-drama's blogs where MH supporters discuss episodes but I wanted to leave it here as well as discussion was made for beanies as well.
Please note that I like Dr Ye and his actor. Everything below are purely my subjective thoughts lol.
So, I wanted to share some more of my thoughts with you about MH & episodes’ titles.
At this point I feel like every single title of each episode has direct connection to MH character. It can be argued that he is a main lead/second lead so it is given that one of the central characters has to be connected to each episode’s story BUT we can’t say the same about Dr Ye.
Let me explain in details.
1. [Flowers that bloom when shaken] – this is about MH-BY that were fighting thorought the first episode. Dr Ye was not even in the picture back then
2. [Every moment is like a flower bud] – again flowers. And those flowers are MH & BY who reconcile because they happen to experience patient’s death. All of the poems in this episode is about them as well. First one is about regretting (MH hurting BY) & second one is about fresh start (MH-BY). Though it can be said that fresh start comes because of Dr Ye.
3. [I like you]. Let’s revise poems from this episode: “One spring day, I saw your love”. We all know who confessed in spring to whom. MH is in taxi during this poem’s narration smiling over BY picture. It is the first moment they clearly give us a hint that he actually likes her. Second poem’s words “I am very thankful to you who treated me like a flower” – MH &a BY are flowers in this story so this poem could also represent MH’s thoughts but I won’t argue that it fits Dr Ye -BY first meeting (as she is a flower treasured by him)
4. [Standing close]. This is interesting. BY is trying to impress Dr Ye the whole episode but at the beginning of the same episode MH declares to BY that he decided to “become close to her” in these exact words. He follows her everywhere as well &I after messing up tries to comfort her. They stand close when they meet old lady.
5. [It’s okay if you don’t love me]. In this episode MH keeps being confused with his friends that he is the one that BY loves & he is trying to figure out the way to reject her. He can’t do it straightforwardly this time & then thinks for a moment that she has given up. He is thinking “Is she trying to tell me that it’s okay if I don’t love her?”. The only thing is that deep inside he doesn’t realize that actually does love her (has feelings for her) that’s why he can’t reject her this time & that this time it is not OKAY for HIM that she happens to be in love with Dr Ye as he finds out.
6. [Family]. This episode’s title doesn’t even require any explanations as we meet some of our chacarcters’ families throughout the episode. And we happen to know nothing about dr Ye’s family for some reason.
7. [The Crciket and I]. MH represents a noisy cricket who keeps making things complicated for BY. As a poem says they “promised...

There's no arguing that the drama is giving the spotlight to Min Ho's character development, which is the main reason Dr. Ye is probably second lead. It would be revolutionary if the drama now switched focus and followed Ye for the next 7 episodes, but I don't think that will happen (secretly I hope it will because why would you cast Lee Jun Hyuk and give him so little to do besides show those amazing veins?) Anyway, I'm interested to see if the writer will surprise us or will go in the expected Min Ho-Bo Young direction.

@saya a question ... do we wait for the next wee cap before we comment on Episode 9 onwards, so as to not add spoilers?

Thanks @fencejumper, I was wondering if the wee caps will be episode by episode or by groups of episodes, because the staff do not have that much time to cover everything in great detail. That would mean containing comments over a few weeks. 😜

It will post regularly, 2 eps in one post per week, just like Mother and Misty. Hold on to your alligators! :D
(But thanks to this thread, we remembered to update the 'next recap to post' section below.)

Hold on to your alligators!
This is an epic phrase in DB dramaworld, which we have to use often from now on 😄😬😊

Yes please! (thanks for answering, @mary! I nearly missed this!)
There will a single weekly post for each pair of episodes, so this week's post will be for 9-10, and probably go up sometime around midweek. Please don't post spoilers for the new episodes in this post, everyone!

Bo-young got a bigger guffaw laugh out of me than from Waikiki a couple weeks ago in that scene where she's drunk-talking to Ye Jae-wook after the staff dinner. She asks if he likes her because she's pretty, and when he answers she thinks he's reading her thoughts. I laughed so loud I may have awakened the neighbors.
