You Who Forgot Poetry: Episodes 1-8

I started this show partly on a whim, and my interest in young actors Jang Dong-yoon and Shin Jae-ha persuaded me to try it out even though I wasn’t sure if there was really any other draw.

I’ve been giving Lee Yu-bi the side-eye since the shambles that was Scholar Who Walks the Night, and watching the first couple of episodes of Poetry, I wanted to drop it SO many times, because! Seriously! Not one good thing happens to her!

But then something changed. Lee Yu-bi’s character and our protagonist, WOO BO-YOUNG, starts pushing back and asserting herself, and there’s something so charming about her that you can’t help falling in love, even while you’re simultaneously crying in embarrassment.

EPISODES 1-8 WEECAP

Once a poetry-loving liberal arts student, Bo-young became a physiotherapist instead for the sake of reliable employment since she has to support her mom. She’s a hard-working contract-employee at Shinsun Hospital, and wants nothing more than to be taken on as a full-timer. That means she’s got the worst of both worlds, because her seniors are always taking advantage of her, while her juniors look down on her.

It gets worse when two of her college hoobaes, SHIN MIN-HO (Jang Dong-yoon) and KIM NAM-WOO (Shin Jae-ha) arrive in her department as trainees. Min-ho turns out to be the guy she liked back then, and she’d wooed him with poetry, only to be unkindly rejected.

Things finally look up when she gets a patients’ choice award for most friendly staff member, but it’s quickly and cruelly taken away since it’s only for full-timers. To compound her misery and humiliation, her history with Min-ho also comes out and everything is terrible. But she finds solace and strength in poetry and decides to give it all another shot.

Her new start coincides with a new addition to their department in the form of hotshot Dr. YE JAE-WOOK (Lee Joon-hyuk), who used to work at a prestigious university hospital. We learn that he left after testifying against a colleague for medical malpractice, but what really drove him away was discovering that his girlfriend and love of his life was cheating on him—with that same doctor. (I’m not sure if there was a revenge angle there, or if it was coincidence.)

Jae-wook seems rigid and cheerless at first, but he set shippers’ hearts on fire by noticing how hard, how much, and how well Bo-young worked, and also how others took advantage of her. He has a habit of prefacing nearly everything he says with, “Shall I give you some advice?” but his advice to Bo-young is always something warming and encouraging, so how can you blame her (and three-quarters of the fandom) for falling for him?

Elsewhere, in the radiology department, HAN JOO-YONG (Park Sun-ho) has been assigned to work with department outcast, KIM DAE-BANG (Defconn), who suffers from pathological indecision which drives everyone bananas, including Joo-yong.

Joo-yong is no less an outcast, an entertainment junkie who watches waaay too much TV when he’s meant to be studying, and the men slowly become closer thanks to their mutual pity of each other. (There’s also a fistfight over who is the bigger loser, lol, and suffice it to say that it was a fight with no winners.)

When impoverished Nam-woo is left homeless, Jae-wook pulls some strings and gets both trainees housed in hospital accommodation. That turns out to be together with Joo-yong—who was also their former college-mate and deeply ashamed of the fact. But for all that, don’t they seem to suit each other perfectly? Ha. They all kind of deserve each other, and I actually mean that in a nice way. I think.

Back in the physiotherapy department, after working alongside Bo-young for a while, Min-ho not only comes to respect her, but also… like her (very much against his will). Except he immediately turns petty when he realizes she likes Jae-wook and does everything he can to make her look bad in front of him.

Thanks to Min-ho’s provocations, us Ye-liners are crying this week because Jae-wook’s rigid facade seems to be cracking, and he’s been doing aaaalll sorts of things that are out of character for him, both in defending Bo-young and in seeking out her company.

It pushes Min-ho to finally admit to the boys (and himself) that he likes her, though he has yet to repent being such an ass.

COMMENTS

What’s great about all these characters is that they’re various combinations of petty, vain, silly, and at times, downright cruel, but the moment you begin to hate them, they reveal a vulnerable human side, a too-soft underbelly, that stops you from writing them off even if you haven’t quite entirely forgiven them.

This is true of Min-ho, who’s taken particular delight in torturing Bo-young whenever possible, yet there is something deeper going on beneath that frivolous surface, he just rarely lets himself go there. The second son in a family full of high-achieving doctors, he’s practically invisible to them, and though he’s rich, he’s starved of affection.

It’s also frequently true of Bo-young’s immediate seniors, Dr. KIM YOON-JOO (Lee Chae-young) and Dr. PARK SHI-WON (Kim Jae-beom), and especially so this week: Divorcee Yoon-joo struggles after coming face-to-face with her ex-husband for the first time since they split, and we learn she left him because she found out she couldn’t have children, though she never told him that.

Shi-won struggles with providing for his family. He does whatever he must to ensure his own survival and refuses to apologize for it, though I think he secretly hates himself a little. They’re complicated characters who are often unlikable and even unpleasant, but they remain sympathetic and emotionally accessible, and that’s what tugs the heart.

What did you guys make of this week’s developments? I’ve been firmly Ye-line since Jae-wook turned up, but I feel like the ending this week was kind of ominous. The show’s at its midpoint so the worm is definitely about to turn… but which way?

@saya THANK YOU!!!! Thank you so much for giving us a particular space to squee about this show! You are the best! Also, thank you DB Overlords for hear out cries for an OT! I really like that all the characters on this show are flawed - even the Dr. Ye *ducks from all the Ye liners*

When it comes to ships, I'm on the minority on the MinHo-Young ship. YES I KNOW HE IS AN ASS. There, I said it. I don't ship them together because he's unpleasant to her, but because I can see them working. She is completely herself when she's with him. I also feel like, *WHEN* this ship sails, it will be because they have come to like and respect the person they have grown to be, not the people they were back in school. MinHo has a LONG long long way before he is even worthy of BoYoung, but that's the direction I see this story going.

Dr. Ye for some reason came off way too robotic and still seems the same way to me. Not because his character is supposed to be cut off from emotions, but just how Lee Jun Hyuk delivers his lines. I don't know, something feels off.

Like I mentioned in a post earlier, I get that whoever you chose as your significant other in your life must respect you and treat you properly. Therefore, MinHo must redeem himself before he can even THINK of being with our precious BoYoung. However, I do not agree with the fact that just because a person treats you well, you should choose them as your partner. In this entire series, Dr. Ye was the first person who treated BoYoung with the proper respect she deserved and that gets him brownie points, but that’s about all it gets him, in my opinion.

I don't think you are a minority. There is a very organised crew hanging out on in the fanwall with @raonah Ye Liners just had a good week and enjoying it while it lasts hehe.
P.S.: I also don't like that Dr. Ye clenches his jaw when he speaks. I don't recall Lee Jun Hyuk being stiff like that before. So maybe it's done on purpose. He only softens somewhat when he talks to Bo Young.

I think there's a maturity gap between all three: between Jae-wook and Bo-young, and between Bo-young and Min-ho, but the gap between Min-ho and Bo-young is a much more stark and significant because he has the emotional maturity of a teenager, which is definitely connected to the lack of love and attention from his family. He's popular enough with his peers, but it's never a substitute. And without receiving love properly, is it any wonder he doesn't know how to give it, or show it himself? His snarky, assy behaviour might be armour to some extent, but it doesn't give him a free pass, and it doesn't make him attractive as a romantic possibility. I find Bo-young much more mature than him, to the point I can't see them interacting on the same emotional level yet. I'm willing to be converted, but unless we see thoughtful Min-ho more consistently than jerkwad Min-ho, I remain skeptical.

Between Jae-wook and Bo-young, I agree she sometimes seems too 'young' for him (not an age thing, a relational maturity thing) but at the same time, I think we might be conflating Jae-wook's aloofness with maturity, and I actually think they're totally separate things. The brief flashback to his backstory shows someone soft and emotionally unguarded. Because we've seen him be this cold 'advice machine' for most of his appearance, we've been tricked into thinking that's his default mode, when perhaps it's not. I'm willing to bet his dorky, mushy side is as natural a part of him as his inflexible, I-don't-mix-work-with-pleasure side. And come on, giving himself advice in the mirror! And avenging Bo-young! And grinning goofily when he thinks of her! It good stuff. So rather than robotic, I see him as someone who's been hurt. And yes, rigid, too. That's what makes him this odd combination of distant yet also not emotionally unavailable.

So with all that said, I'm happy for the show to actually end with all ships at sea as long as Bo-young does not shortchange herself in her own happy ending, because damn if she doesn't deserve to be with someone who respects and appreciates her, and doesn't get off on hurting her. (Whoever that is!)

Agree with everything you said! I will say, Dr. Ye and the mirror talk was pretty awesome. I like that he doesn't mind giving a dose of his own medicine to himself! Don't get me wrong - I TOTALLY understand why the Ye Liner is such a strong ship. I like rooting for the nice guy too, hoping they don't always finish last. I like the thought of a drama team finally just saying "screw this, we're actually going to show you how a mature relationship is done right". But I just don't get that vibe from this drama. Maybe I'm wrong!

In the end, it's like what you said, I'll be happy with whomever it is BoYoung decides to be with, even if it happens to be just herself :)

Hi @saya. I think you are right on with describing a maturity gap between Dr. Ye, Bo-young and Min-ho.
A couple of things.
1. This probably doesn't mean anything but,
from Wiki, the actual age of actors Lee Joon-hyuk (Dr. Ye): 34, Lee Yu-bi (Bo-young): 27, and Jang Dong-yoon (Min-ho): 25.
If Dr. Ye is considered a Professor he must have years more training and experience than Bo-young. The way I see her feelings expressed right now for Dr. Ye they seem to me to be like those of a school girl who has a crush for a teacher.
2. I mentioned in another post that LJH's Dr. Ye reminds me of the character Head of Marketing Seo Woo-jin played by Ha Seok-jin in RADIANT OFFICE (2017). Both are self assured and not afraid to speak their minds to the powers to be.
Thanks for this space. I have a few more thoughts I will post down the line.

"And without receiving love properly, is it any wonder he doesn't know how to give it, or show it himself?"

Because his family is so awful, in addition to not knowing how to give or show love, he doesn't even know how to receive it. And Bo-young flings her love around with an abandon that might be difficult for even the most well adjusted person to handle.

Dr Ye (like Se-hee of BTIOFL) is sometimes perceived as robotic, but he is actually very observant and thoughtful. I see his standoffishness as a result of social anxiety coupled with nervousness starting a new job amongst new (and in some cases, antagonistic) coworkers. Not showing every emotion, doesn't mean you don't have them.

Completely agree with you! Also, in the flashback to what actually happened at his previous hospital, you could see how his entire demeanor changed when he talked to the other woman...he wasn't robotic at all, and it was easy to see how much it hurt him to see him with the other dude.
(I'm saying this still from my palm tree, though)

Yes, Dr Ye was probably ostracized at his last hospital for siding with a patient instead of the hospital’s doctor and then betrayed by his fiancée ( She probably found the social judgement unbearable and was trying to soften up the other doctor.) He was horribly hurt for standing up for his principles and has since closed himself off from warm interaction.

@kbaswithneko
I'm with you with the likely ostracism at Ye's previous workplace. I'm not too sure if the girl was his fiancee but from what he said, that he knows what it feels like to be already separated from the person and then to have that person 'flung' into one's face by others, and to be misunderstood, when there was nothing to misunderstand.

I also gathered that seeing Dr Ye again, made the ex have a change of heart (to get him back) and caused him untold problems which added to the social stigma of his 'betrayal' of the hospital for his principles.

He is thus wary of getting entangled with anyone else in the medical line. This I feel will be the likely reason the Ye ship with Bo Young will not ultimately sail, although it may take off for a short spin, it will probably come back to harbour and not go out again.

2

I couldn’t agree more! ^^
This week’s episodes are Ye Liners episodes so MinHoYoung shippers are silent. ;)

@spicykimchi I'm on the minority with you haha.
About Dr. Ye, also can I say how odd I think it is that he is only acting properly with bo young and how rude he is with other people in the hospital? They did tease bo young and were slacking off at their work, but isn't there a better way of making them understand their faults? I feel like Dr. Ye is only good with bo young but he's not being the same with other staffs. :/

That's a rather fascinating observation - because then we have Min-ho who is alright to everyone else but poor to Bo-young, and Jae-wook who's poor to everyone else and good to Bo-young. Though I'm much more sympathetic to the latter, it's definitely an interesting symmetry.

While Dr. Ye is necessarily the friendliest of guys, I don't know that I would call his actions rude though. Calling people out for taking advantage of a coworker is what a manager should do, they just aren't used to it. Yes, his "Can I give you some advice" is a bit odd, and I can see how it would be offputting, but he's kind of an awkward guy. Additionally, he's already helped the guys find a place to live, and he didn't take the director's job even when it was offered to him. Evidence of his niceness.

As a socially awkward (often perceived as cold) person myself, I get Dr. Ye and this new job situation, on top of the mess it seems he left in the last job, he is being very cautious. The force that is Bo-young, along with her vulnerable status at work, is cracking his shell. I have hopes we'll see his inner marshmallow (or cotton fluff if you please) soon.

I will defend Dr. Ye to bottom of the sea if necessary

I don't know how to put it in words, but I found the way he interacts with his fellow colleagues is a bit cold.. compared to how he is around bo young. I understand that he has his job to do as a manager but still when he says things like you have something on your teeth or I can see why you don't have a bf, I was about to say ouch. I think I would be pretty much scared to be anywhere near him if he was part of my office atmosphere lol. He has his way of making people feel bad about themselves haha, if you know what I mean.
I can see some people have their way of doing righteous things, but then when you're rude to people even good things you do for them isn't what they will remember about you first.

I totally understand what you're saying. Maybe because I'm kind of like Dr. Ye, I think he is both awkward, and slightly clueless about some social niceties, and therefore seems to cross boundaries that he might not be aware of. For instance, while I understand saying "I can see why don't have a bf" is rude, I'm not sure why it's rude to tell someone they have something in their teeth. Aren't you doing them favor? (This is socially awkward me genuinely asking and not trying to be antagonistic because we are all on Team Bo-young) :)

8

Him telling the therapist that he has something on his teeth was his way of shutting him up or embarrass him IMO. It's just the way he is towards people, his expression mostly, yeah.

1

Same. I didn't find him rude, just straight forward. The other characters are just so dramatic which makes him out to be the awkward and he is just probably comfortable around BY.

*just to clarify: I don't think Jae-wook treats people badly, but that's how he's perceived by others. He's a bit rigid and therefore tends towards formality, but I see that as a neutral quality in itself - neither flaw nor virtue, just an aspect of his character. A few people have compared him to Se-hee in BTLIOF, which feels about right!

That pain can also become a path.
There is no life where no wind blows.

The wind must blow,

That is why the wind shakes the trees.
That is why the wind shakes all of us.

Pain can also become a path.
Sadness can also become a path.

Love this one too. It runs deep. When I first heard it, it reminded me so much of a favourite poem of mine, written by Rumi:

The Guesthouse

his being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

(Ep. 4, Only Poem)

"Standing Close,” by Kim Sa In.

Her bent back collects newspaper and cardboard boxes.
Her work pants are loose on her shrunken body.
When a car enters the alley, she stands close to the side.

With her small cart, which is her only flesh and blood.
Standing close in solitude.
Like a spider on a dirty cement call.
Like an old sting ray at the bottom of a water tank.
Standing low and close to a grey wall.

Once the car passes, the grandmother, who was like crinkled paper,
slowly straightens out again.
The cart’s wheels follow her at her heels like young goats.

If I think about the worn out television that will turn on in that room,
If I think about the tilted sink, pots, and pans,
and the bent back that will stand in front of it,
I choke up.
If I think about the rag in the corner, which she has probably wrung out.

The "you're either really strong or really lonely" got to me as well. In essence, I think even though they're saying they're different things, I think it can also be interpreted as they are both sad things. (Ep. 6, First Poem, 00:06:32)

”Morning,” by Chun Sang Byung.

Mornings always feel so happy.
The day begins,
and the starting point is right now.

After I wash my face,
I start my chores,
and open a book.

Today might be my lucky day.
I hope I hear some good news,
under the beautiful sky.

“Family,” by Choi Bum Young.

If you can’t say you’re hurt when you feel hurt, you’re not family.
If you can’t say you’re happy when you’re happy, you’re not family.
A sweet and soft ice cream cone,
isn’t enough to become a family.

Pain, happiness and love must be shared
and you must be endure all hardships in prayer,
until you can feel it together.
That’s how we become a family.

You must be able to express your sadness
and be able to cry together to be a family.
You must be able to express your happiness
and be able to be happy for one another to be a family.

You must feel like you’re under the same blanket no matter where you are to be a family.

“The Cricket and I,” by Yoon Dong Joo.

The cricket and I had a chat on the grass.
Cricket, cricket. Cricket, cricket.
We promised to keep our chat a secret between the two of us.
Cricket, cricket. Cricket, cricket.
The cricket and I chatted under the bright moonlight.

"Jealous Guy,” by John Lennon.

I was dreaming of the past
and my heart was beating fast
I began to lose control
I began to lose control
I didn't mean to hurt you
I'm sorry that I made you cry
Oh my I didn't want to hurt you
I'm just a jealous guy

I was feeling insecure
You might not love me anymore
I was shivering inside
I was shivering inside
Oh I didn't mean to hurt you
I'm sorry that I made you cry
Oh my I didn't want to hurt you
I'm just a jealous guy

[Whistling]

I didn't mean to hurt you
I'm sorry that I made you cry
Oh my I didn't want to hurt you
I'm just a jealous guy

I was trying to catch your eyes
I thought that you were trying to hide
I was swallowing my pain
I was swallowing my pain
I didn't mean to hurt you
I'm sorry that I made you cry
Oh my I didn't want to hurt you
I'm just a jealous guy
watch out baby I'm just a jealous guy
Look out baby I'm just a jealous guy

“To You,” by Lee Jong Hwa.

You’re everything.

All paths lead up to you,
all songs are meant for you,
and I’m blinded by your light.

I can only see you in a crowd of countless people in the plaza.
I see you in every flower along the streets.

I see you in the coffee that I make time to drink.
I can picture you along the mountain hills where the sun sets.

Everything in this world looks different now,
and “waiting” no longer exists in my dictionary.

I’m always close to you.

“The Point of No Return” by Kim Chul Hyun.

Leaving the person you love,
and turning around,
as if you no longer love them.

Hiding the pain in your heart,
and turning around,
as if it doesn’t really hurt.

Hiding your unwanted parting,
and turning around,
as if it doesn’t matter.

Holding back your tears,
and turning around,
as if you’re not weak.

If you love that person,
you can’t turn back,
because you love them.

First and foremost, thank you a lot @saya.
Second: Wow, already 152 comments.
Third: About the drama: The only characters that I truly don't like very much are the two juniors, their only function until now has been to provide gossip.
An really unpopular opinion that I have is that I don't think that she was in love with Min Ho back then and she isn't in love with Dr Ye, not right now, at least, I think that she has a really big crush on MH before and have one in Dr Ye now, but in love? No, I don't think so. Maybe that will morph in love, maybe it won't; maybe she will discover that she still has feelings for Min Ho that in the drama's time become real love, maybe it won't; maybe she would go with her doppelganger Lee Yoo Bi and will let the boys on the dust, maybe she won't, but anyway...
Anyone that read any of my posts knows that I am a MinHoYoung shipper, to those who didn't know, well, now you do it.
I'm just gonna say something about all this: If Min Ho isn't the male lead, why is the drama wasting so much time on his feelings? I mean, one or two eps would be ok but show every step of his feeling from apparent disdain, to grudging friendship, to denial of romantic feelings (a VERY strong denial), to accepting it internally but being a literal 5-years-old and instead of admitting doing everything on is power to create a distance between to Bo Young and Dr Ye, to found a freaking replacement that was exactly like her (I mean, yes I know that is obvious, is the same person but I'm going for the logic of the drama XD) to AT LAST admit his feelings to Nam Woo and Joo Yong... I mean, seriously this is NOT the Reply series XD if he is the SL stop showing so many things from his POV, you don't have to show me every step of his heartbreak too, that's just sadistic XD
Besides, why doesn't Bo Young cut it out? I mean, yes, I know she is nice and everything, but if there is someone that you don't care one way or another that is messing with you all the time and you dislike it sooo much, why don't you put a distance between you?
I mean, of course, they work on the same place and that but still; she doesn't seem close to the juniors and they work together too.
So right now, I still have hope; I would say that both ships can say "It's not over until it's over" but I still feel a little bitter about the whole thing XD (Not at the same level that School 2015 left me, but School 2015 was another whole level XD)

Which means it still lives on the internet. 😂

1

My head knows that but my heart is a different matter altogether XD I mean, I would be ok with they showing us his feelings about Bo Young, that's not my problem; the thing is that I feel that Min Ho has grown up more (and had more focus) than Dr Ye, who just in the last ep we saw a bit from his POV (and I still find kinda a dilemma) Maybe that will change on the upcoming eps and will discover more about Dr Ye and Min Ho will take a bit of a backseat (again, like the last 2 Reply series, the one that the girl ends up with have more focus on the second part of the drama), maybe Min Ho IS the lead but doesn't end up with Bo Young (to me being the male lead doesn't mean necessarily that he will end up with the female lead, that is not always the case Ex. Kim Tak Goo), or maybe (if I'm lucky) he will end up with Bo Young.
I think that both couples have chances of becoming endgame; at the end of the day like it one more than the other, not Min Ho's or Doctor Ye's but just Bo Young's feelings are the only thing that matter, and whoever she ends up choosing (even if it's not my pairing of choice) I will root for her happiness :D

Don't speak to me about School 2015 XD XD

Seriously speaking though, I think we forget that this show isn't really a rom-com. It's an ensemble/slice-of-life affair, which means we're kind of giving disproportionate attention to the ships. If we go by the poster (and posters never lie XD) they're definitely our central characters, but a definite romance isn't necessarily the outcome, growth is, and that makes it a show more of their lives and loves in general, without necessarily angling for an endgame pair. Just like Bo-young, Min-ho is an important character, as is Jae-wook, but what's important about them is their tribulation and growth in a broader way than the narrow focus of rom-com allows.

*edited to clean up repetition, lols. maybe stop commenting on DB while at work XD

I'm a bit surprised by how much shipping discussion is going on with this show because, exactly as you said, it's not a rom-com but more of a slice-of-life show. There are so many characters and so many storylines in each episode. I definitely get giddy when I see Bo-young and Dr. Ye's interactions, but at the end of an episode I often find myself thinking more about some other aspect of the show. For example, at the end of episode 8 my thoughts were dominated by Dr. Kim's story, and her friendship with Bo-young.

I'm not saying the romance set-ups aren't prevalent, and it's fun to discuss them, but I hope it doesn't cause a sort of tunnel-vision when it comes to the show. I feel like that has happened with Answer Me 1988. People were so up-in-arms about the ships in that show that when I started watching it I was expecting the romance to be the main focus. I was shocked when I quickly discovered that the family aspects dominated the story. The romance was paid such little attention (relatively speaking) that I didn't find myself on any of the ships.

I guess what I'm saying is that I hope the shipping war doesn't start to define the show, because there are many more things to love about it!

Just watch me turn into a hypocrite and end up only talking about the ships... 😅

I actually agree with your observations that Min-ho is getting the whole main lead storyline. I also think he's the endgame. But I don't choose ships based on who I think is the lead! I choose who I think is better for our girl. If I get a broken heart at the end, then that's okay. :( If Min-ho grows up in the end and gets the girl, that'd be great too.

I think we shouldn't blame Bo-young for letting Min-ho be like that around her. It's not her fault that Min-ho is being an ass. It's Min-ho who should stop being a child and be a better person if he wants to pursue someone who's been nothing but kind and understanding to everyone. She's not close to the juniors because they keep ignoring her when she initiates conversation. Whereas with Min-ho, he's the one who keeps approaching her (at least now). It's not Bo-young's fault or responsibility that Min-ho acts like that.

Preach, sister!

I'm one of those self-protective pragmatists who refuses to get on anything but the endgame-ship simply because I hate pain (lol), so in dramas where there's ambiguity and I end up shipping one person, I always keep a corner of my heart open for the tables to turn. As long as it makes sense for the characters and isn't serving some other agenda or just plain stupid (curse you, School 2015), I actually enjoy having my heart changed. Just convince me in my heart, show, that's all I want.

I don't think we're to be blamed for shipping Yook Sung-jae in that show, because the drama pulled one over on the viewers in a really bizarre way. Tae-kwang (that was his name, right?) was in every conceivable way the 'correct' main lead, but that heel-face-turn at the end by the showrunners that forced the Nam Joo-hyuk pairing was just unsupported by canon, there was no reason for it to happen. I'm still so angry about it XD

(the entire ending of that show was horrible, but at least I got to recap some of the good eps XD)

3

Ugh I still don't understand what was going on in the writer's/director's head. *shakes head in disappointment*

Very Random Sidenote: I love how your pic is Shigure from Fruits Basket. He's such an intelligent mastermind behind the goofy- perpetually-happy facade.

1

HA! I never saw him as an intelligent mastermind (just a pervy dork) but I like how you think XD

1

@Saya, the mere fact that he thinks head for everyone's protection and knows the true identity of Akito (among other things) is testament to his intelligence. He's still a pervy dork tho.

0

@fencejumper it's been a while (like...nearly 10 years?) since I last read FB through, so you are surely right, I just don't remember a lot of details right now. I'm probably due for a reread, but it's such an intense experience, I don't know if I can handle it right now XD I'm also afraid I won't love it like I used to.

(Which is why I haven't touched my beloved LJ Smith/Nightworld books for over a decade XD)

1

@saya Orange hair kid's (don't remember his name) breakdown was intense 😭. I don't remember much of it either - it's been 5 years and I'm afraid the ultra candy-ness of Toohru may be a put off.

1

I actually considered jumping ship last week, when Min-ho had hearts in his eyes while Bo-young gives him a birthday cake.

I thought, "Oh hey, he realizes now that the things he hated about her are what makes her the opposite of his WTF family. Look how happy he will be with her if they become a couple!" But he didn't follow that up this week by being a decent person to her. :(

Add to that Dr Ye starting to reciprocate and continuing to be awesome and supportive of Bo-young and I'm back on the Ye Line -- with my binoculars trained on Min-ho and a lifevest ready to jump ship if he becomes a better person for Bo-young. :D

I don't choose the ship either, the shipper choose me XD Not, but seriously, I don't chose a ship because I think that it will be canon; Ex. I was pretty much sure that TaeBi couldn't be cannon in School 2015 but it's still one of my greatest OTP's, I did know who will end up with Jan Di in BOF but my heart went to Ji Ho; and in You're beautiful I shipped Mi Nam/Mi Nyu with BOTH second leads even when I knew that the only path that it would lead would be pain, and they were other dramas too (Reply 1994, Heirs, etc) so yeah... I actually admire people that CAN actually chose ships, I can't, I ship what I ship (I'm not actually sure that Min Ho would be the one; a the start I thought that it will Dr Ye and now I'm in doubt, what I say there is just trying to make it sense in my head (sometimes I have to write something down to do that).
Oh, no, I didn't want to say that is Bo Young's fault that Min Ho can be a jerk, I'm sorry if it seem like that.
What I wanted to say is that if there is someone in your life that you don't like (either because they hurt you or annoy you or makes you mad) you try have the less contact posible with that person, you just want to ignore them and they to ignore you (kinda the attitude that they both have toward the other in the first few chapter).
I hope that I made it clearer now, I'm sorry if I didn't phrase it well :D

I think Min ho’s life lesson will be “when you care about someone, you want them to be happy”. When she was crushing on him in college, she did all those secret things for him hoping for his happiness. She didn’t ask for anything in return nor did she confess her feelings until he forced it.
I hope he learns this and it leads him to think of Bo young’s happiness. Even if it means playing cupid.

If we go by basic math and kdrama logic, then Min-ho and Bo-young is most likely the endgame. I mean, we’ve heard Min-ho’s thoughts, saw things from his perspective, symphatized with his sad background, and well, he basically has more scenes than Dr. Ye. He’s interactions with Bo-young is cute (when he’s not being a major douchebag like the birthday cake scene) Ye Jae-wook, on the other hand, is still a big mystery, and it’s one thing that we still don’t know his past, but we also don’t know his thoughts and intentions. We don’t see things from his perspective unlike Min-ho and Bo-young. As much as I love this advice-machine oppa, he’s still a big question mark to me.

There’s two possible reasons (that I could think of) why Ye is [still] a closed-off character:
1) He’s the second lead. Maybe the writer does not want us to bond with him too much. I mean, he’s pretty darn swoony already without the internal monologue.

2) The writer is intentionally keeping him a mystery and is waiting for the right moment to let us hear his thoughts. You know, that BIG REVEAL - the moment that shows us when and how Dr. Ye fell for Bo-young. If it comes a little too late, then he’s the second lead and Bo-young will be his ‘the-one-who-got-away’ but if it happens on the right time (Ep 12/13??), then he’s the male lead.

I also hope this ambiguity will last longer, because it is quite super funny for us shippers. But being serious, it has to be (i hope so) something logical who she will choose if she ever chooses at all. I hope, like @vicki27 and @growingbeautifully said, she would choose wisely, which could also means, choose herself.
But i am very happy with the writer who is giving us a true "kind of" love triangle where we don´t know (we really don´t) who is the main lead, who is the OTP.
I know, i know, Vicki also pointed out how much time the serie is giving Min ho to show his feelings, but we Ye liners don´t love him for nothing. He may have entered second in the story (timely speaking) but he has had also lots of screen time.

We will find out!!!

The episodes this week pretty much guaranteed that I'd be on the Ye Line cruise for a very, very long time. No matter what happens to this precious ship, I'm glad we got to see Dr. Ye and Woo Bo-young's story-line and experience the heart-fluttering scenes they've been delivering ever since woori uisa appeared <3 I've read other beanies' appreciation for the ship and I couldn't agree more ~happy sigh~ these two truly deserve each other! I believe and trust they'd give us a satisfying ending for the two. No more endgames for me, I just want them to be in each other's life... in any way possible.

May the person who appreciates poetry the most win! 😉

I’m Switzerland right now, and would love to hear your thoughts about Min-Ho. I have some of my own, and can really see him with her eventually, but not now. I get a brother-tormenting-his-little-sister vibe from him, and I do think that he probably has her best interests in mind especially when he keeps telling her that Dr. Ye sees her as just a colleague, albeit he’s uncouth and mean about it. Didn’t we say he was Gilbert Blithe on someone’s wall? And look where that ended up, one of my favorite couples in literary history. So don’t lose heart, I’m sure he’s the end-game here. I’ll just bring under this palm tree 🏝 watching it unfold.

it is not far away and not that expensive..I already live more or less in the south of Germany. The other day I crossed all Switzerland by bus in order to go to Lyon in France to visit my brother who had a baby. It is totally doable in less than a day.

1

@letseatcookies oo I went to Prague in October! My first trip to mainland Europe ever...and probably my last. Beautiful city, fascinating history, super racist (against my type of brown) and my sisters and I had a really scary experience.

We kept wondering why there was hangul on the airport signs, and so many Korean tourists - googled when I came home, and of course, drama! Lovers in Prague, 2005, Kim Eun-sook.

Guys! If you ever swing by England/London, drop me a note. We have a tiny and wonderful beanie congregation here (we get together every few months for drama-binges and food-comas). A couple of months ago, we got to meet the amazing @pogo1! Which was the best thing ever! So...tell me if you'll be in town, we can organise a meet-up!

5

@saya I was wondering that too. The airport was filled with Korean and not to mention the Korean tourists. Felt like I was back in Korea hahaa. Made me miss those ahjummas in their gear.

Are you in the UK? I'm there (well here too). BEANIE REUNION!!

@letseatcookies you are a englander? Who knew! Whereabouts? We tend to meet in London (3 out of 4 of us here, and our fourth trains it in from Leicester)

2

Whaat? You were in Prague, @letseatcookies @saya? What a pity I did not know, I would have loved to show you around and chat.

1

@saya I'm from Swindon so by coach 2hrs. Oh my...I use to study in Loughborough. Leicester is quite far. hahaha

0

@allphryne You live in Prague? WOW. I barely did anything as I was meeting up with friends who were travelling around Europe and I haven't seen them in so long that we just ended up chatting. But I plan to go again, so next time I will give you a shout out.

1

Great, you should @letseatcookies.

0

@allphryne it's a shame I'm only finding this out now, otherwise I'd'v'e loved to have linked up! If I ever go again (I kind of want to, despite the horrible parts), I'll let you know!

@letseatcookies let's make a date the next time you're in London!

😂 Although to be fair, Gilbert Blythe didn't need to do quite as big of a turn-around.. After that initial "carrots" thing, he was pretty much.. ah, how did the book put it? "Worshipping the ground she walked on."

That'd be entertaining to see from Minho. 😂

nooo don't go, stay! Shipping is just a fun way to pass the time, nothing bigger! ALL poetry friends should stay and share their own perspectives! Think of it more as a shipping tea party (make tea, not war!) where we all exhibit different preferences in our choice of edible, be it cucumber sandwiches (Ye-line), macarons (Min-ho), chocolate eclair (Nam-woo)...okay help me out here guys, what are the others?

@saya true say! Yes, I’ve been to a fair few myself. London’s million-man marches are always unforgettable experiences. I’m usually the lady with the megaphone 📢, so anti-war slogans are always a constant as part of my arsenal!

1

Wait, are you in the UK too?

Ah. The million-man march. I went to that. Tony Blair ignored us all and still went to war. But that's okay, because he's also going to hell.

3

Yes, I’m in the UK, too - the Midlands to be precise!

Lol, re Tony Blair, I’m totally of the same belief. Pity Theresa May is proving no different.

1

one our beanies comes down from Leicester! You and @letseatcookies should join the UK beanies FB group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1839518532953981/

If you guys find yourselves in London, drop me a message here (on my fanwall or on twitter), we can arrange a meet-up!

And it's okay, T.May going to hell too, in the same handbasket as T.Blair.

2

Ooh yes, that would be lovely! I’m no longer on Facebook, but I will definitely give you and other beanies a shoutout the next time I’m in London. I’m looking for a good squeal sesh over Pretty Noona, so a meetup sounds ideal. 👍🏼

Pff auto-correct sabotaged my comment.

I meant to say: If Min Ho writes poetry, it better be pretty bad so we can all laugh at him.

"Roses are red, violets are blue.
You're really pretty. I'm not kidding you."

17

Or...an apology poem:
Jealousy is red, alligators are green.
Nam-woo went bankrupt 10 years ago, And I'm sorry I was mean.

*or is jealousy green too? oh well, we're not expecting Min-ho to be a poet laureate* 😂

13

@ally-le I feel an Ode to Alligator coming on...

So close to my heart
So close. I held onto you.
For ten years we wouldn't part.
The thread of fate held true.
So close to my heart.
So close. I hold onto you.
If you should ever leave,
Lacoste and I are through.

24

😂😂 @ally-le and @wishfultoki, your poems are beautiful. Someone call up the writer and have him/her add it to the script.

4

Min-ho's terrible poem for Bo-young:

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Don't love Ye Jae-wook... I'm just concerned about you?

Another terrible Min-ho poem for Dr Ye:

Can I give you an advice?

Get lost.

18

@wishfultoki that's better than what I can write.

you and @ally-le and @mary 's poems are good.

4

@egads ikr? I'm so proud of you all, you're amazing! 😂

here's my poem to you guys - or to be precise, a limerick:

There once was a jar full of beanies,
Among them not one single meanie.
Though most shipped the Ye-line
and found him divine,
The Min-ho ship was mighty if teeny.

16

And for us islanders:

Lest we forget about the Isle of Neutrality,
We're here to save you from each malady.
So if your ship starts to sink,
And you're teetering on the brink,
Yell, "Beanie overboard!" We will nurse you back from calamity.
(And duct tape you to a tree if necessary!)

*tag @fatcat007 @snarkyjellyfish @kumoiwa @greenfields @jenmole @blnmom @egads @ravennightstar @natzillagorilla @wishfultoki @delphy010 @hotcocoagirl

(LOL, it took me longer to tag everyone than it did to come up with the poem and I probably missed some!)

6

@outofthisworld is floating in the ocean now too. We need a Haiku for these beanies...until they make it to the island.

An ocean liner.
It started to tip over.
Confused and stranded.

3

@ally-le Thank you for including me among islanders although I am currently lost at sea and trying to reach the Ye Liner.

I feel like this could become a thing... a weekly write-a-poem challenge? I am contemplating something on "Can I Give You Some Advice?" for next week.

Thank you @saya for the OT and thank you beanies for introducing me to this show. I start this show after read some beanies comment in fan wall.

So far, i love this show. The loveline is lovely. I'm in ye-line, because i adore him with boyoung, i really like his character, and how he treat bo young with care. But somehow i feel like Dr Ye is the second lead (hope i'm wrong).

Aside from the loveline, i love the side story too. There's so many heart warming scenes in this show. Like jo yong and his father and the old doctor, daebang whit the dementia man, and so on.
I like that there's no perfect chracters here, everyone has their own flaw (but sometimes it's can't be an excuse to do bad things to others, ex Dr. Park, min ho, etc), so the story is relatable.

I love how they show the poems along with the beautiful scenes ^^ My favourite poem is 'pain and sadness can also became a path' by lee chul hwan.

the humour in every ep also entertain me. i need to lower my voice when i laugh at the scene where Dr Ye give advice to hisself (beacuse i watch it at 02.00 Am) in ep 8 so i didnt wake my family. I love the humour except about the polygamy thing (sorry if out of topic, i just want to share a brief information, In my religion (islam) men can only do the polygamy if he can treat the wives justly, otherwise he is only to marry only one wive like being said in qur'an)

I didn't bring it up in the main post but I was really put off by the racist stereotypes put out in the first half of ep. 7 and commented on it here and here. It was really ugh, and that was without even talking about the unveiling fantasy sequence, which, please, can we just stop with? Easy on the orientalism, it's 20-freaking-18.

As late as last year, Korean entertainment shows were still using black face. Sadly, there is still a lot of ignorance going on. It's much harder to impossible to pull off comedy based on stuff like race, sexuality, and gender in Korea given how homogenous and conservative it is, but they still do it anyway. That is to say, that kind of comedy might not get as much backlash in Korea as it would outside of it.

I'm not unaware of the reasons why it occurs and continues to occur, but as a member of several (misrepresented and maligned) minorities, I don't feel it's necessary or useful to handwave them, so I make it my responsibility to call out what I see. If enough of us say it, eventually they will notice, and eventually they will get the message. After the Man Who Dies To Live fiasco, a friend of mine living in Korea asked her colleagues about it, and she said they didn't really understand what the problem was - that itself is a problem.

But there's also a second issue at play here in particular, which is the orientalism/fetishisation aspect, which is a direct import from white colonialism. That means these aren't even native attitudes or prejudices, but inherited from western rep, and that's just a step too far to tolerate sometimes. It's bad enough to have to contend with this crap in western media - it's part of the reason I can no longer watch a lot of it and found a home in K-drama to begin with - but to have that toxic, rank filth leak into Korean media too? No. No, no and no. Be better than this, K-drama.

And, on a positive note: it's possible, and I'll give you an example: Descendants of the Sun. Whatever criticisms people make of that show, they offered a really sensitive portrayal of their minority characters, and I loved that - I kept expecting the 'usual' treatment to emerge (i.e. racist, derogatory stereotypes) but it kept surprising me by just telling human stories about them, never turning to stereotypes and degrading narrative shortcuts. So it can be done where there's a will. In the meantime, I'll keep cataloguing what transgressions I encounter.

11

Required fields are marked *

It's not innocent ignorance, it's willfull ignorance stemming from racist mindset. Koreans have the fastest internet in the world and they know their entertainment is followed around the world, sorry but I don't buy it anymore that it's plain ignorance.

I hadn’t been able to see a drama in quite some time, and this is a very adorable one to go back. Bo-young is the cutest, I don’t understand why her co-workers, who are full of flaws, bother her so much, they’re mean. I like Dr. Ye, he is intelligent, mature and considerate, although sometimes he seems a little rough. He treats BY very well, and one of the most important things, he respects her, personally and professionally. He encourages her to improve, to not be ashamed of her personality, he makes her feel better with her compliments, that helps her with her self-esteem and not to doubt herself. I'm completely on his side. I don’t know who she'll end up with, but I can’t support someone who treats her as badly as Min-ho does, his immaturity, his family problems, whatever conflicts he has, don’t give him the right to treat her so badly, always bothering her, telling her that she’s not attractive enough, and that no man would fall in love with her, wth? Normally, people want to make their opponent look bad in front of the person they love, but on the contrary, he wants to make her look bad in any way, embarrassing her, talking about things she doesn’t want to reveal, even though she asked him not to, besides saying that she confessed her love for him and he rejected her, this is not romantic or cute, it’s rude and disrespectful towards her. Besides, he rejected her, so why does he have to sabotage her now that she likes another person, he should accept what he did as a big boy. The truth, I'm a little tired of these stories in which the guy treats the girl badly, but still he loves her , and the girl ends up forgiving what he did, it doesn’t seem so funny or romantic. Couples don’t have to hate themselves in the beginning, or always be fighting to be interesting. What's wrong with a couple that gets along well since they know each other, and treat each other well and respectfully?, nothing wrong. For me Bo-young and Dr.Ye are adorable, they get along well and make a beautiful couple. I really enjoy their scenes, I think they're cute, to die for. I will continue to enjoy when they’re together, even if they’re not the endgame, that’s an emotional problem that I will have to solve later, but it doesn’t matter.

@Ksa
I agree with you. I feel the same.
"Normally, people want to make their opponent look bad in front of the person they love, but on the contrary, he wants to make her look bad in any way, ..." - Min Ho is sooooo not good friend material even... not to mention boyfriend material. He is perfectly capable of being nice to others, but he victimizes Bo Young which should cut him off from being a love interest in RL.

"Besides, he rejected her, so why does he have to sabotage her now that she likes another person, he should accept what he did as a big boy." - the show is going OTT in making him a silly, childish, little boy. It's so not fun.

"... I'm a little tired of these stories in which the guy treats the girl badly, but still he loves her , and the girl ends up forgiving what he did, it doesn’t seem so funny or romantic." - It isn't romantic at all, and especially when it's not done right. If it were a matter of opposites attract, or both sides having rough corners to smoothen out, etc, these do make for nice a resolution when the couple finally compromise and get together. However, this show is lacking in subtlety in how it displays contrasts and contradictions. If they go too far overboard, it will be very hard to make the antagonistic character acceptable to viewers.

"What's wrong with a couple that gets along well since they know each other, and treat each other well and respectfully?, nothing wrong." - Nothing wrong indeed, just, I guess, not interesting enough to make it frequently or regularly to a drama. I do see 2nd or 3rd lead couples and less often, the OTP, with these sorts of relationships. Once in a way, we may get a refreshing take on the OTP getting together without so much bad treatment on the part of 1 party - it's rare but happens and is something to always hope for!!! 😉

Required fields are marked *

But there are, actually, some not that few dramas where the OTP treat each other good from the beginning, with some little and necessary barking or childish fighting to makes us laugh, of course. I am thinking of the weightlifting fairy kim bok joo, while you were sleeping, 20 century boy and girl, fight my way, shopping king louie, just between lovers, oh my Venus...
And these are just examples.
I know, there is the classic jerk type main lead who mistreats the heroine because he likes her so much, blah blah, but I appreciate dramaland writers have also moved on and given us healthier otp's to root for.
That being said, Min ho falls into the classical jerky type, and I agree with all what you have said, and for those reasons I remain in the Ye ship.

The thing is, I don't think he's sabotaging her. That wasn't my reading at all.

My reading was that he was looking for validation for his decision. He's very immature and he found her attention embarrassing. Now he's seeing another man respond positively to it and he spent the episode constantly asking him, "but isn't this embarrassing?", "isn't she silly?", "doesn't this make you feel cornered?".

On top of that, she has turned that insane, unwavering beam of attention to somebody else and he genuinely wants to know how she can do that. Isn't she supposed to like him? How can she be so completely all about him and now completely all about somebody else?

He reminded me very much of a child walking around asking, "Why? Why? Why?"

So no I don't think he was trying to sabotage her at all. He's way too immature for that.

2
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think one reason for his response is that he doesn't know how to receive or even react to positive and loving attention. His family is horrible and he doesn't seem to have any experience with unconditional love. And while I think Bo-young is all that is adorable and sparkly, she is a bit overwhelming when it comes to showing her affection. That insane unwavering beam of attention, as you so eloquently stated, was too much for the poor boy to handle.

Thank you, @saya! So glad that we finally have a place here. This show hits the soft spot in me. I really like both Dr Ye and Min Ho for different reasons.

Of course, Dr Ye is much more mature. He has surprising reaction to the things that Min Ho or Bo Young finds embarrassing, and those sweet smiles are just like spring, every single time.

Min Ho has some growing up to do. Good thing about it is that he can actually grow with her. Another good thing about him is that I bet he has seen a gazillion embarrasing moments regarding Bo Young, but he sticks around anyway.

Although, by checking up I see Lee yu bi was in Pinocchio, which I loved as well, but I didn't remember because her character here is way different.
Anyway... I love to be surprised by the acting of these leads, and so far unrelated to the shipping battle, I like all of them. They are bringing me joy and feelings. With that alone is enough for me.

This show has so many wonderful little touching moments, I love it!

I love Bo Young so much! <3

So, after reading all the beanies' input on this comment section, the conclusion is that Min Ho may be the end game if we follow the kdrama formula where the mean guy gets the girl. And it does make sense when Minho gets most of the spotlight. However, a plausible scenario will be Dr. Ye will eventually hurt Bo young as well then Min ho goes to rescue but then Dr. Ye comes running back for his girl. Yes yes. This is more like it. 😂

3
5

Required fields are marked *

Haha, I like the way you think.

However... it's usually the other way around: heroine dates the perfect second lead for a while but it is a MISTAKE according to laws of dramaland. Therefore, external forces conspire to give the now-reformed lead a chance again: Ex girlfriend (you were saying?), Truck of Doom, the Staircase of Missed Opportunities, Elevator of Misunderstandings, Amnesia, Terminal Illness, or Evil Writer Syndrome. Heroine ends up realizing her feelings.

As a result: I don't want Bo Young to date Dr. Ye yet because plotwise it means they will break up in the near future and that Min Ho is for certain endgame. LOL. What have dramas done to my brain to arrive at such ridiculous conclusions about relationships? 🤣🤣

9
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

I know right? I can't even enjoy their relationship now because it'll mean for sure they will break up..why? because we are only half way through. Kdramas have made me very skeptical. I tend to see any good things as a foreboding to something bad happening...unless of course it's at the end...so maybe I'm being pessimistic..but I would rather these two get together towards the end..if that would ensure that Dr.ye is the end game.
Or a more logical path would be-she dates Minho again for a while...and even though he becomes a better person, she would realise that they both have changed these past few years..and also their likes and dislikes..whatever it is that she liked about him back then doesn't hold good anymore. So they remain friends but she gets together with Dr.ye.
Now I should run before the other ship catches me. *runs to hide*

I think Dr. Ye is. I'm going by combination of casting news (stated LJH was in talks to be the male lead along with Gong Myung before he dropped it), promotional art (his picture comes first) but mostly casting news before the drama aired. The first few pages for the soompi discussion has the article links.

I mean, I could be wrong and we could have been intentionally misled or the end game might be changed since ratings are getting REALLY low but I guess we'll see in a few weeks!

So I'm here, I made it finally. You're all a bunch of crazy people but I mean that in a good way.

This show is the kind of fun I was hoping Woohoo Waikiki would be before I realised it was just slapstick and gross-out humour. There's nothing of any real depth but I do prefer the title You Who Forgot Poetry because to me it more fully symbolises the emotional journey of the characters.

As somebody who opted for a steady, safe income over my dreams , I can completely empathise with the underlying concept of poetry as a metaphor for romance in a petty, silly, vainglorious world.

I am on the Island of Neutrality mostly because I think there's something excruciatingly immature about Bo Young's romanticism and I feel she needs to grow up before she pairs up. In this, the show kind of reminds me of Biscuit Teacher and Star Candy (and in that one she literally ends up with a child).

Although the latest episode was called the point of no return, I saw another encompassing theme, 'a child'. We saw it when Dr.Kim's storyline was revealed about how she is unable to have children. Dr. Park too was easily willing to switch loyalties at work because he had kids back home and his mother had come all the way only to look after them. Then, when Chief Yang asks Dr.Ye for a favour that, even if he's sacked to take care of his staff, he felt responsible for them professionally and personally, almost like his children?
This made me access Boyoung and Dr.Ye's relationship. Dr.Ye is very protective about Boyoung, he uncharacteristically avenges her. He worries about her. Seeing her feel down he cheers her up with walks in the park, treat meals or kind reassurances.
Back to the theme, at the park Dr.Ye and Boyoung see all the kids flocking to the cotton candy and Dr.Ye buys one for her too. Later in the day, Dr.Ye see a child eating cotton candy, he probably see Boyoung in that child (conversely a child in Boyoung). In other instances we see Boyoung putting or nearly putting gauze or tissue or a dusting brush into her mouth- doesn't this remind you of how babies put everything in their mouths?!
Now Boyoung is nicknamed Cry "baby" Boyoung, which when Dr.Ye first heard of it he thought it very fitting. Even the usb left behind had a cute little plushie Dr.Ye pointedly looks at. Funnily enough the trash song at the karaoke too begun "You're a baby, you're a baby.." 😂
So basically what I am getting at is, Dr.Ye has definitely noted Boyoung's childlike innocence, how she can cry easily, sees the poetry in life. For this I see Dr.Ye being a professional mentor, a lifecoach and yes A PARENT, to Boyoung. But not a love interest.

The subs were a bit weird in that scene, he wasn't emphasizing her crybaby-ness, but took her Cry Baby Bo-young nickname and added a "teacher/doctor" title to it cos he wanted to learn emotions from her. I feel like you're correct about the mentor thing though. My heart is saying no (what mentor excitedly drops off a USB directly to a girl's house at night just to take her for a walk?) but my brain is saying there's a 90% chance that the writer will turn the ships around using the "I just cared for you like a real Oppa" excuse.

Ahh yes the emotions teacher makes sense too. I see the mentor thing be more symbiotic that way. Boyoung is already rubbing off on him. He is smiling more, reflecting (literally) on his own actions, smelling the roses or cherry blossoms if you will. Also since this is a work place slice of life drama I don't mind a mentor relationship being highlighted. Because having a mentor at your workplace, to be taken under one's wing is truly a blessing. I also see this making Dr.Ye into a great leader to guide this motley crew.

There is no denying the writer is clearly goading us to ship and flounder just like Kim Daebang.
