Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching
by DB Staff
So, what are we all watching this week?
What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…
girlfriday
Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food: I’m behind on almost everything right now, but this show is making me swoon like a schoolgirl. Why do they have to be so charming? I squealed so hard when Sohn Ye-jin grabbed Jung Hae-in’s hand for the first time, on impulse and fueled by liquid courage. This show… it gives me butterflies.
mary
My Husband Oh Jak-doo: What’s worse than Noble Idiocy? Two Noble Idiocies! I don’t know who’s more noble and more of an idiot. Is it Seung-joo for raising such a ruckus in Seoul, it put Oh Hyuk in the spotlight instead of hiding him? Or is it Jak-doo for leaving his wife with nothing but a cupboard full of red bean jelly, thinking it will be enough to explain his weeks-long absence and (future) appearances on national TV?
You Who Forgot Poetry: I love Woo Bo-young. She’s the fluffiest, friendliest, most adorable and competent physical therapist ever. How can anyone not want to be friends with her? They look down on her emotional vulnerability as a weakness, but feeling sympathy for an unpleasant colleague or falling in a hopeful love after being hurt is an underrated talent that makes the world a nicer place. Isn’t it funny that the Advice Robot is the one who sees the value in that?
Mystery Queen 2: I jinxed it, didn’t I? There’s totally going to be a season three.
Switch: Funny Jang Geun-seok, I missed you! Though Sa Do-chan isn’t as wacky as Hwang Tae-kyung, there’s enough goofing around when he’s pulling a con with or on Oh Ha-ra. There’s also another Jang Geun-seok character in a coma, but I haven’t met him yet. He sounds like a stuffy character. I’m already anticipating Sa Do-chan playing with him too. Overall, this show reminds me of the first season of Mystery Queen where the “genius” cases aren’t terribly smart, but you watch anyway for the chemistry between the characters.
Tale of a Good Witch: We’ve spent weeks waiting for Do-hee (the evil Lee Da-hae) to wake up, thinking we misunderstood her and she’s secretly suffering in the hell that is Donghae Airlines, but apparently she’s just a horrible person surrounded by even more horrible persons. Now that she’s here and not even interested in fixing the situation or being a better sister to Sun-hee, can’t we just put her back in a coma?
TeriYaki
Miracle That We Met: I decided to give this drama a try and before I knew it, I had watched five episodes. Two men born on the same day and who share the same name couldn’t be more different. Kim Myung-min’s Song Hyun-chul is cold and ambitious, a total jerk to everyone in his orbit, while Go Chang-seok is kind and warmhearted. After a series of unfortunate events, the messenger sent to escort Kim Myung-min to the afterlife makes a terrible mistake and the kindhearted Song Hyun-chul ends up in the the other man’s body. This drama can be both laugh-out-loud funny and heartbreaking as Kim Myung-min communicates the other Song Hyun-chul’s confusion over his unbelievable situation. What gives this drama its emotional center is Go Chang-seok as the kinder, gentler Song Hyun-chul and I only wish that there were more of him in this drama. His sorrow over his estrangement from his real family hangs over him like a dark cloud and both actors expertly express his heartbreaking loneliness.
You Who Forgot Poetry: This drama is tough to categorize because even though it feels like a comedy, the poetry colors the characters’ conflicts with such poignancy that it feels like so much more. On the surface, most of the characters are all socially awkward and immature as they navigate their professional and personal challenges, but they each have their struggles to contend with. So far, the drama has dealt with the characters’ backstories but I’m wondering if the focus will now shift to their futures, especially if Bo-young gets her wish and Dr. Ye returns her interest. Her previous crush, Min-ho, mostly serves to illustrate how well Bo-young and Dr. Ye get along, but Dr. Ye voiced his commitment not to date anyone at the hospital, so where does that leave Bo-young?
That Man Oh-soo: Oh-soo finally finds someone to love only to learn that Yoo-ri unknowingly drank coffee infused with pollen from the mysterious tree. At long last we get answers about his parents’ tragic story and learn more about the tree’s powers. What we have yet to discover, will Oh-soo and Yoo-ri find a way to be together, in spite of the tree?
My Husband Oh Jak-doo: We’ve hit the inevitable point in the drama where the main couple’s romance gets derailed for the time being. I hope it gets resolved soon, because UEE and Kim Kang-woo are just too adorable together. The separation can serve to remind Seung-joo how strong she is and enable her to return to Jak-doo’s side fully restored, no longer frightened and defeated. She’ll need that strength to deal with the truth about Jak-doo’s identity and everything that goes with it.

J drama Yami no Bansosha. Arata Furuta as the gruff manga editor/expert .✅
J version of Signal. Not as suspenseful as the K drama. Kim Won-Suk, the K director, works magic, not easily replicated. The K cast was stellar too. Still going to give it a shot.
Poetry: Woo baby, I hope you find true love. Can’t believe other Doc didn’t tell husband re fertility issue. 🤔⁉️🙄
Live: Like the mix of cases and rookies learning the ropes. Possible love ship change ?
My Ajusshi: IU & Lee Sun-Kyun are doing wonders. Thank you writer, director, cast and crew for an outstanding job.💐🎉❤️
Have to finish Revenge Club and Evasive Inquiry

I really enjoyed children of a lesser God... It's the series I've been looking for.. Kdrama have been dull with their films lately.. Not like before... I've missed dramas like city Hunter, iris, jumong, heirs et.c... Those dramas were really great.. But now kdrama is losing the quality we knew them for......

Then I find it hard to picture what "quality" are you talking about for the dramas nowadays... (scratch my head)...

To me Lee min ho heirs is really interesting...i think it has ratings than city Hunter.. I'm not really into romance but that drama has it all... The story.. Struggle for power.. The actors and actresses are really good... Fashion also.... I think you should re watch it...
But nowadays... Their village dramas is not so interesting like before and also the city... Before we like their dramas because of the pretty ladies in it... But now the drama will be interesting but the lead actress will be......

Not a re-watch. 😅
Thanks but no. Not even a watch.
I have honestly not watched Heirs... just a couple of scenes and I read most recaps and comments about it.
But because of that I won't watch it. Also, personally I don't like Lee Min ho and his acting doesn't convey anything for me. Park Shin Hye had a poor characterization in that drama, she was always being bullied, humiliated and passed around like a toy of these rich guys supposedly in love with her. She couldn't even close her eyes when she was kissed! 😂
And in regard to the plot, the struggle for power, and this chaebol mentality is absolutely absurd for me. Rich villains prove to be in most dramas typical cartoonish villains with zero personality, except for being vain and wanting to hurt the main character over nothing, deep deep inside envy, maybe.
So, because Heirs is like that, and most characters keep on lying and humiliating others, and those rich moms and dads are horrible, I would never watch it.
But hey, if you liked it. Good for you! 👍

Switch - Nice comeback from Jang Geun Suk I like the switch between Sa Do Chan and Baek Joon Soo and waiting for more revelation on both of their identity.
Children of a lesser God - I like this drama a lot before maybe because of Kang Ji Hwan but as I watch it the story is interesting and all casts are doing a great job. Subs is a bit slow. Hopefully it will be shown in Netflix so I can marathon this great drama.
Let's eat 2 - I know it's been 3 yrs since this show was aired but since there's not a lot of good shows that I am interested to watch right now and when I stumble in this drama on Netflix I said i might give it a go and it didn't disappoint me it was funny and too many food as what the title said. I keep on salivating whenever I see them eat hahaha..
The Miracle that we met - one of the best drama in currently airing dramas right now. Thumbs up for their team and the casts. It was funny and then made you cry at the same time.

I am! It's entertaining, but not mind-blowing so far. Hopefully now it will get more exciting (we're at episode 16/20). A few of us have been discussing on the original news thread, and @pakalanapikake provided short recaps. Be warned, spoilers are rife. Since there is no other sageuk on offer it's the only option if you really really crave sageuks (like me). Maybe try 2-4 episodes. If you don't like it then you won't like the rest.

Am I the only one not loving Pretty Noona? I don't get all the hype. It is a nice show and the acting is great and natural but I'm quite surprised they got together so soon. What I love in noona-dongseang romance is the expectation: will they dare to be together or not? How will they manage their new relationship? Will the age difference be an issue in their daily life? In Pretty Noona we didn't have enough time to see the noona-dongseang dynamic to fully see and appreciate the shift from noona-dongseang to lovers. Also we barely saw them having second thoughts. I'm wondering what is going to happen in the next 11 episodes. Will this be all about hiding from the big sister and the family? Will this be about their reactions? I guess I don't really care much for that since I believe it's not a forbidden relationship nor do I believe family should have their say in who you want to date, especially when your 35 years old...

on ly like a couple of shows right now.LOVE Pretty Noona but the romance happens so quickly I'm a bit afraid I'll be bored in the second half. My Husband OJD and Poetry are both decent too.
Just finished King 2 Hearts. This was one I started a few years ago when first watching Kdramas and it just didn't hook me so I shelved it when the crown Prince was being an asshole. The actor has to be incredibly good looking and charismatic for me to overlook general horribleness and back then Lee Seunggi was anything but for me. I have to wonder if it's my better familiarity with Asian men as main leads that's made me change my mind three years later. Lee Seung Gi is so much better looking and charismatic this time around to me, and I got to watch a great show I might have missed. Kdramas certainly seem to have educated me in the attractions of Asian men overall!

I keep thinking Chicago Typewriter might fit in the same category.. That haircut makes the main lead so ugly to me, and in the first few episodes his personality seems even uglier, yet the main female lead seems to like him. I keep wondering if his past incarnation has better looks and character and whether I might like this one after all too.

Hi @barbrey. If CHICAGO TYPEWRITER (2017) is on hold for you I encourage you to give it another chance. It was one of my favorite dramas of 2017 but I would not have thought so at the beginning. During the hiatus last year because of the Presidential election in Korea I was able to binge the early episodes. It took 5 or 6 episodes before the drama hit it's stride for me. Once the yelling stopped (you will know what I mean) CT became enjoyable for me.
I learned a lot of watching this drama.

I'd like to know what's going on too. Budget cuts is my first suspicion. But It's not only the drastically reduced recaps, comments seem to be way down since the interface reboot. I just watched King 2 Hearts and scanned an episode thread on dramabeans and there were more than 1200. Are comments anywhere near that in the last few months since the reboot? Dunno, but do know I'm not visiting DB nearly as much as before cause there aren't recaps and associated comment threads for the shows I'm watching. I guess for me the question is: is this temporary? Or the new permanent for now pace of DB?

You Who Forgot Poetry
Finally! Ahhhh I feel giddy inside, just thinking about who would end up with Boo Young! I am glad Minho finally admit it, that he has feelings for Boo Young. I just hope that Dr.Ye's ex would not turn this drama into makjang somehow. I cried this ep, but not because of our lead, but because of Dr.Kim. It must be very lonely to bear it all alone and pretend that she is cool with everything, and happy. *sobs*
Good Witch
Dear Sun Hee, I know you love your twin sister but she is an ungrateful sibling, if you ask me, at least until now. The first thing she might want is to throw you off a cliff and I think it is best to put her back in coma. Bring Tae Ree with her in coma land, if possible.
Pretty Noona
That breaking and entering scene is my favorite. Now at the police station, I can imagine the brother's heart just dropped. LOL. I want moooorreeeee!!!!

Really late to the party. Oh, well.
Still glued to LIVE, which has been painfully realistic in its depiction of Jung-o's back story. Her Scared Rabbit Non-reactions were the giveaway. Han-sol's condition is worrisome, but he soldiers on. Yang-chon finally loses it when Mom breathes her last. He wouldn't have become a cop were it not for her tragic life. I was glad he and Jang-mi had so much support from their colleagues. Thankfully there was a birth and a wedding to offset the sadness a little.
Still glued to GRAND PRINCE, too. The tide seems to be turning, but I'm not counting any chickens just yet.
Still watching SHOULD WE KISS FIRST to see that EEEvil Candy Chaebol gets his comeuppance. The romance lost me a while back.
For some reason, I'm still watching GREAT SEDUCER. It's like an impending train derailment.

None of these appealed to me after a few episodes. But haven't tried Grand Prince - I'm really in the mood for a sageuk like Rebel, Seven Day Queen, Three Musketeers or Six Flying Dragons. Any chance Grand Prince is like any of these?

Hi, @barbrey! Long time, no see.
On paper, GRAND PRINCE might have sounded like SEVEN DAY QUEEN or even MOON LOVERS, but although it seems to be following the history of King Sejo (of THE PRINCESS' MAN), it's not clear that it will end up following real life. It's not quite as gripping as REBEL had been for me, but I was deeply invested in the latter because of the writer as well as the cast long before it premiered. That said, I've been enjoying it, and will admit that my card-carrying Yoon Si-yoon fangirl status has something to do with that. He had done a good job in MIRROR OF THE WITCH, his first sageuk, and he's doing well in this one, too. Most of the cast is new to me, but I've been happy with the performances for the most part. With 4 episodes to go, the homestretch is within view. I truly cannot predict where the plot is going. Things are getting interesting.
You might wish to visit the GRAND PRINCE recaps on Drama Milk, or the discussion thread here:

I hope that helps. ;-)

So, I’m on sick leave which means that I get to catch up will all the dramas. There’s always a bright side in each situation. The not so bright side is that all the shows are now past the happy go lucky phase and into full on noble idiocy/secrets/tears part.
Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food – it’s cute and I love the main leads but I feel like it’s missing something. At the very least, I’m glad that they are actually acting like a couple and not all that “let’s hold hands” after 10 long episodes of lovey dovey glances. I swear these Korean dramas will be the death of me when it comes to showing affection in a couple.
My Ajusshi – not the type of drama I usually go for, but I caved in to the hype and started it. Finished all 10 episodes in one day so I might be addicted. It s very raw and real and I love everything about it. I already liked IU and found her adorable but I haven’t seen the lead actor in a drama before. I’ll have to change that because that voice and that presence, daaamn :))
The Great Seducer – ah, I have so many problems with this one. I don’t know why I keep watching it, I must be self-destructive. At this point, I dislike pretty much everyone in this drama. I try to understand them but it’s, oh, so hard when they just don’t make any sense anymore.
My Husband Oh Jak Doo – what is happening? I can’t wrap my mind over Seung-Joo behavior these past episodes. I mean, I get being mad, but she’s taking these to another extreme. Why can’t she just help Jak-doo finish this Oh Hyuk drama and then go back and make pretty mountain-kids?
You Who Forgot Poetry: I get why people like Woo Bo-young, she’s like a human version of that cotton candy. I’m not so invested in the romance for this one yet. I find Dr. Ye a bit too perfect-y so I’m not taking any sides for now. We’ll see how things progress. So far, the couple I’m most interested is in radiology :))
That Man Oh Soo – As most here, I have no idea what that deal is with that tree. Is it planning world domination, having a bad day or just likes killing happy couples? The supernatural part was grossly underused in this one as I expected Oh Soo to use his “powers” more often. One episode to go, so I’ll finish this one. Also, can I just say how beautiful Kim So-Eun is <3
Also, an honorable mention to Waikiki who might be my favorite show this year – cute and funny all in one pretty package.
That being said, I’m now searching the horizon for new dramas – might start one that’s already completed. I’m thinking of Mad Dog, Liar Game or School 13 – orrrr why not all?

Haiz...i wish they did reviews for "Miracle we met", it's such an underated show. It's one of those drama that it is easy to miss out on like "go back couple" but once you watch it, its really a gem.
Really love the acting of the three main actors: Kim Hyun Joo, Ra Mi Ran and Kim Myung Min.
Definitely recommend this drama! The miracle we met have the same writers as "Women of Dignity"
