Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching
by DB Staff
So, what are we all watching this week?
What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…
girlfriday
Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food: I’m behind on almost everything right now, but this show is making me swoon like a schoolgirl. Why do they have to be so charming? I squealed so hard when Sohn Ye-jin grabbed Jung Hae-in’s hand for the first time, on impulse and fueled by liquid courage. This show… it gives me butterflies.
mary
My Husband Oh Jak-doo: What’s worse than Noble Idiocy? Two Noble Idiocies! I don’t know who’s more noble and more of an idiot. Is it Seung-joo for raising such a ruckus in Seoul, it put Oh Hyuk in the spotlight instead of hiding him? Or is it Jak-doo for leaving his wife with nothing but a cupboard full of red bean jelly, thinking it will be enough to explain his weeks-long absence and (future) appearances on national TV?
You Who Forgot Poetry: I love Woo Bo-young. She’s the fluffiest, friendliest, most adorable and competent physical therapist ever. How can anyone not want to be friends with her? They look down on her emotional vulnerability as a weakness, but feeling sympathy for an unpleasant colleague or falling in a hopeful love after being hurt is an underrated talent that makes the world a nicer place. Isn’t it funny that the Advice Robot is the one who sees the value in that?
Mystery Queen 2: I jinxed it, didn’t I? There’s totally going to be a season three.
Switch: Funny Jang Geun-seok, I missed you! Though Sa Do-chan isn’t as wacky as Hwang Tae-kyung, there’s enough goofing around when he’s pulling a con with or on Oh Ha-ra. There’s also another Jang Geun-seok character in a coma, but I haven’t met him yet. He sounds like a stuffy character. I’m already anticipating Sa Do-chan playing with him too. Overall, this show reminds me of the first season of Mystery Queen where the “genius” cases aren’t terribly smart, but you watch anyway for the chemistry between the characters.
Tale of a Good Witch: We’ve spent weeks waiting for Do-hee (the evil Lee Da-hae) to wake up, thinking we misunderstood her and she’s secretly suffering in the hell that is Donghae Airlines, but apparently she’s just a horrible person surrounded by even more horrible persons. Now that she’s here and not even interested in fixing the situation or being a better sister to Sun-hee, can’t we just put her back in a coma?
TeriYaki
Miracle That We Met: I decided to give this drama a try and before I knew it, I had watched five episodes. Two men born on the same day and who share the same name couldn’t be more different. Kim Myung-min’s Song Hyun-chul is cold and ambitious, a total jerk to everyone in his orbit, while Go Chang-seok is kind and warmhearted. After a series of unfortunate events, the messenger sent to escort Kim Myung-min to the afterlife makes a terrible mistake and the kindhearted Song Hyun-chul ends up in the the other man’s body. This drama can be both laugh-out-loud funny and heartbreaking as Kim Myung-min communicates the other Song Hyun-chul’s confusion over his unbelievable situation. What gives this drama its emotional center is Go Chang-seok as the kinder, gentler Song Hyun-chul and I only wish that there were more of him in this drama. His sorrow over his estrangement from his real family hangs over him like a dark cloud and both actors expertly express his heartbreaking loneliness.
You Who Forgot Poetry: This drama is tough to categorize because even though it feels like a comedy, the poetry colors the characters’ conflicts with such poignancy that it feels like so much more. On the surface, most of the characters are all socially awkward and immature as they navigate their professional and personal challenges, but they each have their struggles to contend with. So far, the drama has dealt with the characters’ backstories but I’m wondering if the focus will now shift to their futures, especially if Bo-young gets her wish and Dr. Ye returns her interest. Her previous crush, Min-ho, mostly serves to illustrate how well Bo-young and Dr. Ye get along, but Dr. Ye voiced his commitment not to date anyone at the hospital, so where does that leave Bo-young?
That Man Oh-soo: Oh-soo finally finds someone to love only to learn that Yoo-ri unknowingly drank coffee infused with pollen from the mysterious tree. At long last we get answers about his parents’ tragic story and learn more about the tree’s powers. What we have yet to discover, will Oh-soo and Yoo-ri find a way to be together, in spite of the tree?
My Husband Oh Jak-doo: We’ve hit the inevitable point in the drama where the main couple’s romance gets derailed for the time being. I hope it gets resolved soon, because UEE and Kim Kang-woo are just too adorable together. The separation can serve to remind Seung-joo how strong she is and enable her to return to Jak-doo’s side fully restored, no longer frightened and defeated. She’ll need that strength to deal with the truth about Jak-doo’s identity and everything that goes with it.

Woohoo Waikiki: A fun and hilarious ending for a hilarious and heart warming drama.
A Poem a Day: Sail, my little Ye-ship, sail. Also, I might finally found a new girl crush in Bo-young, whose kindness and endless optimism reminded me that life is as beautiful as we make it to be.
My Ajusshi: I'm still reeling from that last scene. And still didn't know what kind of outcome I actually wanted from that confrontation. Things could get ugly really fast. But it's Dong-hoon we're talking about, and he is one of the nicest, most unpredictable character I've met. Thursday come fast.
My Husband Oh Jak-doo: I'm almost mad at both Seung-joo and Jak-doo this week for their double-dosed unnecessary noble idiocy. But since the show kindly gave us a hint of reluctant bromance growing between Jak-doo and Eric (which I predict would be awesomely aggravating for Eric) and showed us Seung-joo once again being passionate in her work, I'm letting them of the hook. For now.

Old Boy - 7.5/10 - Romance part was quick and still took all of it took 10 episodes. 2nd male and female lead showing their traits. Still one good Chinese Drama.
A Poem a day - 6/10. dropped. I have no interest in low quality copy-paste love triangle romance trash.
Marry Me Now? - This show has issues. Good no. of them. Still the old pair of Mi Yeon and Hyo Seob is carrying the show. Its Mi Yeon who has made this show worth watch. All other characters and pairs show how much big of a hack Writer is. Director has done bleh job. Editing can't save this show. Time Pass.
Single ladies Senior - 7/10. Taiwanese drama. OK ok start. Better than Poem.
JAPANESE - SPRING is here
Love Rerun - 7/10. watched 1st 2 episodes. Its doing alright job so far. I expect more action in future. Nice twist in 2nd episode.
Seigi no Se - 7.5/10 worth watch for now.

Hana Nochi Hare - hanadan - waiting for subs.
Mob Psycho 100 - waiting for better translation

I finished Waikiki Go Go which finished as strong as it started if not even better. It was consistently warm and funny and a great way to turn off the brain after work.
This week I also finished Sungkyunkwan Scandal which was so cute!!! And the guys were so nice and kickass as was the heroine. Anyhow, I know I am late to the party but it was a great drama which I am glad I finally got to watch.
With those two dramas done, I therefore picked up A Poem a Day and My Ajusshi. Very different shows but both excellent. I haven't gotten that far as I alternate between the two depending on my mood but so far so good.
I also ventured into the French section of Netflix and picked Le Chalet which is a short (6 episodes) mystery with murders set in a beautiful french village. Another show fighting for my limited TV-watching hours.

Hi Beanies! I have finally caught up with all the on-air shows I have been watching! I guess this weekend I can watch a movie or something.
This is what I watched this week:
*Waikiki: I loved it! I’m sad it's over, but I'm glad I watched it since the beginning. Let's get it! Favorite scene this week: Sol calling Dong-gu “appa”! 😭
*A Poem A Day: The Ye line was strong this week. But I wish we could get more into Dr. Ye’s head. He is swoony, but even though I strongly support my ship sometimes it feels like he is just a nice guy doing friendly things. Like he is lonely and wants a friend. I’m okay with friendship, but the heart wants what the heart wants. Can we get some romance, chaebal! Favorite scene: Dr. Ye giving himself advise in the mirror😂
*Evergreen: He is cute. She is cute. They're cuter together! This week there was less cute all because of that darn tree. The final two episodes better bring the cute back. Fighting!
*My Ajusshi: I am finally all caught up with this show and wow! I am loving it. I'm anxious at how it's all going to unfold. I haven't had the chance to read the comments in the recaps, but hopefully I can join the discussions soon. Favorite scene: When all of Dong-hoon’s friends/family came out to have his back. He is loved. I hope Ji-an can get some of that love!
*My Husband Mr.Oh: We all knew Jak-doo’s secret was going to come out sooner than later, but...but I just wanted him to stay a mountain ajusshi forever. Well, at least talk it out with Seung-joo first. Oh-hyuk better be just as awesome!

You Who Forgot Poetry: Still an enjoyable watch. I like Yubi in this, and I'm glad she got this opportunity as I always thought the writer did her no favors in Scholar for which she got a lot of - imo - undeserved grief over. Regarding the drama, the Dr. Kim why-my-marriage-ended scenario was the height of noble idiocy and I think lazy writing.
The Flame's Daughter: So I really liked it. 52 episodes, very little skipping even in the middle saggy section full of political maneuvering. Great production value, amazing fight scenes and what ended up being a pretty sweet love story. I love how all three guys ended up putting what she wanted first. Oh, and no second lead psycho/obsessive woman anywhere! (There was a guy though....ha)
Still enjoying My Husband OJD and Old Boy.

I am probably in a minority, but I agree that the Dr. Kim backstory was pure noble idiocy. I don't know how I'd act in such a difficult situation, but it really wasn't fair to the guy since it seemed he was a good husband.
I think the writer wanted to give the most drastic example of 'Point of No Return' with Dr. Kim, which was the theme of that episode, to compare with Min Ho and Bo Young. Have they reached the point of no return? Are they really over? And has Dr. Ye reached the point of no return with his pasty-faced ex? We'll have to wait and see.

I'm with you on the unnecessary noble idiocy of Dr. Kim. It was completely unfair for her to leave her husband that way without telling him why, and allowing him to make a choice for himself. As he seems like a nice man, they could probably have worked out a solution. Adoption is not a horrible thing.
Hopefully, Dr. Ye just tells the pasty faced ex to buzz off and leave him alone. He has the sunny visage of uri Bo-young to gaze at now.

I remember when they did this plotline in Doctor Who and there were howls of outrage from the fandom. I put some of it down to culture so I was less angry here (if I got angry at all the misoygny in Korean TV I'd never watch any).
My critique here is the same as there. It's disgusting that in 2018 a woman is still being judged (or believed she is judged) for her fertility. But it's equally offensive to men to assume that they can't cope or adapt to infertility.
Despite all the televisual evidence to the contrary, men are not children. No matter how much time and energy is devoted to making us think they are.

In regards to the 'Point of No Return' poem, I wonder if the translation might be providing a different connotation than it should be. Point of No Return, to me at least, makes it sound like they made their decisions and now they have to live in regret because they can't go back and undue them. The literal translation of the title is "The Road You Can't Turn Around On," but I think it might make more sense if it's thought of as "turn your back on." For instance, in the beginning it lists examples of things that you can turn your back on or deny like pretending not to hurt when you're hurting or acting like you don't love someone when you leave them behind. But, in the end, it says that when you truly love someone because of that love you'll never be able to truly turn your back. So I think it might have actually been closer to a meaning of love is the one path that once you've stepped down it you can never go back. In other words, no matter how much both Dr. Kim and Min Ho tried to deny or cover up their feelings, if they truly loved someone then a part of them is always going to love that person (and consequentially make them feel or act a certain way because of it).

Oh I like your explanation. Thanks! I would indeed prefer to think Dr Kim’s tears were due to regret and that she still loved her husband, not just self-pity.
This is where I wish I knew Korean. I’m sure a lot of meaning gets lost in translations of these poems.

Gosh. I know " Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food" will be good but I can't seem to gather the strength to watch it as I'm not fond of noona romances in kdramaland nor in real life. I'm such a disappointment to humanity. 😣
On another note, "A Poem A Day" is the only drama I've been eagerly waiting to watch. I hope no dating for any characters yet. It would still be too early. 😂 Dr. Kim's story though, was heart wrenching. His ex-husband looked like a really good person. I wonder what his reaction would be if he knew that she can't get pregnant. 😦

I don't know, It's a bit different from the usual noona romance. It's more to do with how close they are to family, rather than how different they are in age. It isn't at all what I thought it would be. BUT! In my opinion it's better. Anyway, I recommend you give it a shot when you can. Even If you don't like it, you're not a disappointment!

Idk. I love both Noona and Poetry but they both disappoint me on some levels.
Noona gives me warm vibes but it's nothing I haven't seen before. And Poetry has this 2010-2015 drama vibe I can't shake off. Minho is obviously the winner here (no matter how much of a thing polyamory is) but he's an utter jerk and I think the actor who plays him deserves every award for making me love him Despite. Idk. I'm enjoying both - a LOT - but I feel like I'm missing out on feels.

Finally have something to write this week. ^^
The Great Seducer: I’m not super invested in the OTP so while Woo Do Hwan is killing it with his heartbreaking scenes, I’m not feeling tortured by the angst. I want the second leads’ relationship to be stronger. I wanted to see Soo Ji wavering about her feelings for Se Joo a little. My interest in her character has dwindled. Not sure when this drama ends, but I’m going to finish it. The familial conflicts haven’t turned me away yet.
Mystery Queen 2 and the finale: What a disappointment. The last (and big) case was somewhat interesting, but they moved a little too fast with its execution and then jumped to the next conflict in the last hour. I didn’t like how they left things hanging with Secretary Kim too. They had spent a lot of time teasing Wan Seung’s and Seol Ok’s relationship and the ring/proposal throughout the season, but there was no hint of it at all in the last two episodes. Wtf. They don’t deserve a third season, but I will wait for the reviews to come out before before giving it a chance.
You Who Forgot Poetry (Up to Ep 4/5): Ahhhhh, this drama has my heart! The show I’m often thinking of these days. The show I think of even during my real life activities (Kim Dae Bang at the grocery store, y’all lol). The show that makes me excited after a long day of work. I’m determined to catch up this weekend. xD I enjoy reading all the poems and seeing the stories of the patients and the staff.
Woo Bo Young is so endearing! I feel for her. Her body gags were initially odd and sooo extra, but I've come to accept them as a part of who she is. I noticed that each of the characters have their individual quirks. Most of them are not annoying... Except Dr. Park. He is like a pest. I like it when he bickers with Dr. Kim and when he gets scolded though. XD Love seeing Dr. Ye on my screen, but I’m gonna try to be on a neutral ship right now. Min Ho is going to make it tough in the upcoming episodes though. ;A;

My ajusshi - highlight of my week, I can't wait to see ji-eun and dong-hoon finally live for thems elves.
Evergreen - where is that damn tree from? An alien life form in hiding from a ex in space, hell bent on splitting couples apart? Maybe to save her life she needs to bond with the tree?
Mystery Queen - will read recaps for season 3 first.
Pretty Noona - holding off until more episodes are subbed.
Variety show.
I live alone - I'm glad we get to see some of the rainbow club members routine after LA.
My daughters men s3 - suprised to see the show is back and that Mi-ja is still part of the cast.
Running Man - would like to see more of Lee hana or jI-young featured as special members.

K-Drama
My Husband Mr. Oh I'm still scratching my head, why I like it? The lead couple is still the best thing from the drama. Last week episode when Seong joo broke up with him and he barely hold his tears, I felt like I want to hug both of them. Leave my jakdoo and Seong joo alone!
Pretty Noona I cut my nutrition for Jung Hae in and regret it after only one episode. What can I say about the drama..., I love Jinah's handbags.
Welcome to Waikiki The Second drama I finish this year. I enjoy it though the love triangle between donggu, yunah and that baking chef guy was dragging too long.
Dorama
Erased I dropped it at episode six. It's obvious who the killer is. Maybe finding the killer is not the mistery, but I'm too lazy to find out.
British
Endeavour This series has always been giving so little information to the viewers about the murderer, but the first episode of season four really pissed me off. We only got like what, ten second of that person scene, I want to guess who the killer.
Life on Mars finished with season one, but I don't feel like to continue with season two. I'm just gonna wait the kdrama version.
US
The Alienist In the first 5 minutes, 'what the f*c* am I watching???' But every actors in this series is soooo good. I'm still watching it and I don't plan to drop it yet.

Officially dropping Should We Kiss First..might only catch the finale though.
Mystery Queen 2 - haven't watched the finale and avoiding myself from spoilers, but it seems like beanies are not happy. NO Mystery Queen. Don't give me the first season ending here😬
Live - continue to be awesome and heart tugging good. I might binge watch all Noh Hee Kyung's drama. She's no star writer without a reason. 😇
A Poem A Day - so, good. Love all the poems, and I just love the sweet natured Bo Young. No matter who she ends up with, just ship the other one who's left behind to me. I would gladly accept either Min Ho or Dr Ye😛
Code Blue Season 2 - finally. I didn't watch this while it aired because I was busy with my study, and only searched for it after the 3rd season aired. Yamapi was as good as I remembered him, and the series was as awesome as the first one. Love all the attention to details, especially the medical procedures. That's how you produce a drama, everyone. Attention to details. 😊
My ahjussi - i will forever remember this drama as one of the best, and one of the drama that keep me thinking, long after I watched the episodes..just give me an
appropriate closure and I'll be satisfied 🙆

Great to see another fan of Live here.
This to me is the best 2018 drama, supreme in every sense from writing, directing, acting, music etc etc. After so many years of kdrama watching, I am more and more drawn to this type of slice of life dramas which when done well - like Live - is very rewarding as we travel the same journey as each police officer's trials and tribulations. Big salute to every character in this wonderful ensemble drama.

The good thing about Live’s directing is “just right” because one can easily sensationalise the violence and crimes in a police drama. But this is your standard procedural drama but one about the day to day of police officers and how their work and personal life intersect. The directing has so far placed all our characters front and centre with their cases as the supporting act.
Of course, Noh’s script is what anchors and grounds the show in what she intends it to be. It is criminally underrated among international fans but the local rating is very respectable and TVN is rewarding the crew with a Thai vacation.
I started this because of Jung Yung-Mi and she clearly does not disappoint with her portrayal of this smart and competent rookie with a dark backstory BUT I love all the characters especially the two Bae’s as the mid life crisis couple. I honestly think they are the leads of this drama, magnificent performance - Ms Bae is always very good but oh my Mr Bae whom I have only seen in movie as mostly nasty villain is phenomenal in Live. Fantastic to see his unforgettable delivery here.

Yes, Mr Bae (Oh Young Chon), I didn't even notice he was one of the faces in the poster (that's how unfamiliar he was to me), but after the first few episodes, he has my undying loyalty. He carries the character so perfectly well that I just felt so bad for him, especially when he was misunderstood by the whole team when Sang Su was injured. One very great actor, indeed.

Noh Hee-kyung has been the queen from the get go but her last couple dramas with Kim Gu-tae weren't up to her usual standards imo.
It's good to hear that the directing is better here.

If Noh inspired, There will be no turning back, indeed. Both Park Hae Young and Noh Hee Kyung are on fire. We are bless. haha

I don't mind going slow with those shows. They don't need to be rushed.
I do however want to watch PD Kim Jin-min's "Lawless Lawyer" live and hopefully " Lesser God" will out on Netflix after that.
"Are You Human" better be good for June.
"Life" will be out in July and I want to watch it live too.
So many dramas to watch.

@kiara : So many drama to watch so little time.
I have so much hope for Lawless Lawyers and really want it to be good not only for Lee Jun Ki's sake, but For Kim Jin Min's sake. His drama with Lee jun Ki Between Time Dog and Wolf was in 2007. if it's turn out good, It will bring all 2007 drama feels back
And I hope Are You Human Too will be a hit and turn into a good drama and not only typical robot drama with shallow romance as a gimmick. I have so much faith with The princess Man writernim.
LIFE is also My to watch list despite my indifferent towards medical series.. Hope they will tone down about technical aspect about medical like surgery, case, etc a little abit. haha
So many promising show, AIGOO! I can't!

@PYC exactly. Unlike other police dramas that focused on criminal investigations/rape cases/woman-child cases/cold cases, LIVE focuses on the majority of the police forces, the first responder of cases, the patrolling team, the one who guards the crime scenes, those that dealt with petty cases. God bless the writer and the team behind it, for coming up with a mundane, daily, day to day cases, but with so much heart and presence that we can't help but be sucked into their world.
One of the best drama for me too, alongside My Ahjussi.

What site do you think provides the best subs?
Pretty new to kdramas and know no Korean. I usually watch on DF because of the download option, but I sometimes think maybe Viki (other place i watch) has better subs?

Personally, from language to language, I think Viki has better subs than DramaFever. They're better at explaining jokes, nuances, and little things, instead of just simplifying them. I think this might have to do with their approach of having a team of subbers for each drama, and this also allows the dramas to possibly (but not always fully) be subbed in a variety of different languages.
I also watch Japanese, Taiwanese, and Chinese dramas, and Viki just seems to have subbers that have a fuller understanding of the culture, which helps make the subs better.
However, DramaFever has more consistency when it comes to releasing subs in a set amount of time. That being said, they will only be released in maybe.. 3? different languages, and that's it, without a real option for additional languages.
But anyhow, Kocowa, DramaFever, and Viki are all collectively better than Netflix subs. 😂 And the difference from the first three isn't super big, but from my personal experience, Viki seems to have the best ones.

I think it was the simplifying I noticed and only from info I found on here. It was words like Oppa & Noona which I don't think need to be translated .....but only from understanding some of what they mean from GF & JB explaining here.
Plus, reading recaps and thinking I missed something, but just translated differently.
I want to say it was Reply 1997 that had something little that was translated differently on here, DF, & Viki. Language is so interesting.
I do stay away from the message boards on Viki because of the complaints about subbers. Maybe I'm just too new but I still find it amazing I can watch a show subbed that just aired the night before.

Apparently, I wasn't the only one who thought Netflix sub was weird..Haha.
They tried too hard to translate the sentences that sometimes, the nuances were lost. It might not be noticed by those who are not familiar with the languages though..

Viki has been around longer than DF and Netflix. Viki was the first to do live subs.
It was during when "Queen Seon Deok" was airing because of how popular it was. Every subber wanted to help sub it so it went from 1 to 2 days to same day.
It became the trend especially for shows that are popular.
I've always prefer viki because it's a work of volunteers who loves K-drama and most pour their hearts into it.

Hi @bammsie. I have paid subscriptions to Viki, DramaFever, Netflix and Kocowa. I also believe that Viki has the better subs. A few things:
1. I like their subbing style ie not translating certain words. I find it annoying when DF translates hyung (almost always incorrectly by inserting a given name) and other common kdrama Korean words.
2. Last April, 2017, right at Easter, because of a delay in licensing (what else is new) Viki had 6 episodes of TUNNEL (2017) dropped on it at once. The subbers did a great job getting all those episodes subbed for viewing; and
3. A great example of handing nuance was also last year in the Viki subbing of CHICAGO TYPEWRITER (tvN). Because of the subject matter (Japanese occupation of Korea in the 1930s)
there was almost like a reverence the way that drama was subbed. A lot of historical references were explained in parentheses. They also "donated" the space at the drama's end for further historical explanation. That is the space at the end where the subbers who worked on the drama are thanked by name. It was a great job.
CHICAGO TYPEWRITER (2017) was an terrific drama. Highly recommended.

Viki definitely has the best subs. They have a team of volunteer subbers who work hard at filling in the weaknesses in other subbers' work.
But because of Kocowa Viki has had to lock up a lot of its Korean content into a Pass Plus subscription so it costs extra $$$. Also, if Netflix snags the rights then Viki won't have it at all. But best subs.
I agree with @bammsie. Anything is better than Netflix subs.

I find Viki unwatchable with ads though. It's not the ads per se - they don't load and then the show stalls and it takes me three times as long to watch an episode. I eventually paid because I wanted to watch My Dear Boy and another Chinese drama recommended to me. I almost never use Viki for Korean dramas, despite them having better subs because anything I want to watch is on Pass Plus.

I gave in and started paying when they began taking the dramas hostage and locked them up (at least for a few weeks) unless you had a subscription! I couldn't handle that! I think Viki did that first, and then DramaFever followed suit.
The funny thing about DF, though, is that they used to offer a "rookie" subscription that was only $12/year that basically just gave you access to the "premium" content but you still got ads. I went for that one but I for some reason never got ads when I watched on my laptop, although I got them on mobile and Roku. They got rid of that subscription option at some point in the past year and then I started being able to watch on mobile and Roku with no ads even though I am not paying for the full subscription! I don't know what's going to happen in June when my rookie subscription runs out. They'll probably make me get the full subscription. Oh well.

i agree, that is a determining factor for using Viki... however, their subs are slower in the past couple/few years, since they went "subscription based"... i was a Viki subscriber AND a Dramafever subscriber, back in the day...
but i dropped my Viki subscription, because of the sudden delay -- before they were subscription based, Viki was the fastest site to watch dramas with subs -- like by 1pm on the day it aired... it was FABULOUS!
however, after becoming "pay to view"... you'd think they would PAY their subbers, now that they are generating revenue... but no... now the subs are slower than ever...
that's my problem with them.
Dramafever has staff to do the subs, so by late afternoon (US time), the currently aired episode will appear with full subs. but yeah... they don't sub the OST lyrics.
just saying... netflix certainly screws up the previously established algorithms...

It's becoming a pattern. I wake up on Sunday and find nearly 200 comments on WWW. I'll talk about something other than the dramas I'm watching.
Watching Lee Yu Bi and IU in their current dramas reminds me that kdrama actresses have harder time because of how writers and PDs tend to write and direct female characters. I couldn't stand Yu Bi in The Scholar Who Walks The Night because her character was behaving more like a fangirl of actor Lee Jun Ki. It was like an opportunity for the viewers to slip into a character and play up their fantasy. For IU, I couldn't endear to Hae Soo in Moon Lovers even though I loved Ruo Xi in the original. Instead of being a main character, she became a plot device and given to staring blankly for eternity.
I can't recall exactly but I think both actresses bore the brunt of criticisms with the usual decrying of oppa being let down by unworthy partners. I wasn't in that camp but those dramas did adversely affect my opinion of their acting ability. Thank goodness for You Who Forgot Poetry and My Ajusshi!
Of the two, YWFP is not as well written but it's Yu Bi who made Bo Young absolutely adorable. It's a feat to pull off a nice, fluffy and cute character like Bo Young because annoying goody two shoes and irritating aegyo types are a dime a dozen. I've not written much about BY but I love her more than the guys. In Ajusshi, IU more than holds her own on the same stage as Lee Sun Kyun.
Now, I wonder when will I get to change my mind on those least favorite actors on my list. The men often get to play better written characters so they should be less disadvantaged, no?

You're so right about IU and Yubi, though I looked at them a little more kindly because they had been good in other roles before their dramas with Lee Jun Ki - Yubi in Pinocchio and the film Twenty, IU in Producer. When that happens, even if viewers develop amnesia and hate on the actress, I tend to see it as they were just hampered by bad directing and writing and don't deserve to be bashed.
I don't assume that every crappy acting performance is the fault of the PD and writer, some actors really are just bad but for those who are actually good in prior roles - not just passable or 'ok because the role was written to suit them' but GOOD - it's only fair to give them a chance.

I had a soft spot for Yubi since "Nice guy" then "Gu Family Book" came along and she was the one that stood out to me even with limited screen time.
(Her mother actress Kyeon Mi-ri is a sageuk veteran and she must have taught her well).
I love her in "Twenty."
"Scholar" failed in both writing and directing so I won't even put the blame on any of the actors. I would've given up towards the end but they worked diligently and I couldn't drop it.
I think Kim So-eun did well, better than what she was given .
Yubi's character was just a total damsel in distress for most of the show.
IU and Yubi both have potential back then and it's good to see them (one of them) find better materials that would showcase what they are capable of.
I don't think IU should do sageuks but Yubi does have potential to be very good in it with a good writer.

The actors in Scholar weren't bad, in fact it was a really good cast who had great chemistry and even had interestingly written characters.... except for the character of the heroine herself. And of course the random plot.
Even with that, it looked like Yubi tried really hard to make the character charming even if it didn't really work. I also noticed she had better chemistry with Changmin than with Lee Jun Ki (in fact Changmin was surprisingly decent in this drama).
I'm glad IU is getting some love for My Ajusshi, I can only hope Yubi gets a role soon that gets her widely recognised as a good actress too. I feel bad for her, she didn't do any acting roles for 2 years after Scholar and now who knows what's happening to that movie she signed that was starring Oh Dal Soo.

I’m guilty of writing off actresses after a mediocre performance. I try to keep an open mind and Sometimes I change my mind (Suzy is getting better imho). Sometimes I don’t. (Example: watching My Husband has convinced me that Han Sun Hwa is not a good actress)
I think overall IU is a decent actress; I liked her cute miss sushi role in Dream High. Basically I think she was misscast in Scarlet Heart and that she wasn’t ready for it. She was ok, but the director’s love of close-ups didn’t help.
Maybe the answer is simple: Lee Jun Ki Oppa outshines everyone, including his leading ladies.😉 Seriously, The only actress I remember who commanded the screen when next to him is Shin Min Ah. 😎

I actually feel the opposite ways about Suzy and Han Sun Hwa lol. I like HSH in the short drama Binggu, she was funny there and I don't mind her, even if most of her roles are the second-lead type or insignificant, I don't hold that against her. Meanwhile I really don't feel like Suzy's acting will ever improve to the level of deserving leads, even her 'improved' performances with a LOT of help from writers and PDs (basically every type of support a weak actress can get) are just indifferent with no chemistry with lead actors.
IU was really badly directed in Scarlet Heart. I really think that is the fault of the director, there's no other way to explain why she's able to do close-up acting so well in Producer and My Ajusshi but was constantly o_o in SH.
I also agree that Shin Min Ah is Lee Jun Ki's best leading lady so far, and the only one he didn't totally overshadow and actually had romantic chemistry with. I think Park Ha Sun (Two Weeks) was good too but they didn't have much of that kind of relationship in the drama. And Moon Chae Won had so much potential but they completely wasted her and Jun Ki's chemistry.

My Ajusshi: Loving it and not much more to add to what I have already said… My absolute favorite for a long time. IU is killing it.
Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food: I am enjoying this show a lot. Not only is it very cute but soo realistic. A couple who acts like a real couple, progress naturally through various stages of a relationship through kissing and getting intimate without making it feel extremely awkward. The noona is really pretty, not dowdy or anything, the noona slayer is young but mature and manly. What’s not to love? I don’t find it slow or boring and like the workplace side of the story as well. I am loving the direction they are taking regarding the sexism and harassment in the workplace. I don’t know her name nor position but the CEO’s PA/the female executive is so awesome! I am also getting a kick out of female second lead being brought down a peg or two. I really hate Jin Ah’s mom’s attitude toward background and families. I am sure it is very realistic but so painful to watch. And I am amazed puppy didn’t kill the ex-boyfriend after seeing those photos in his computer. My only frustration is having to wait a week for the recaps. @girlfriday Knowing your love of noona romances I would have loved to have you recap this and read your more detailed comments.
My Husband Oh Jak Doo: I haven’t seen last night’s episodes yet but now that the murder story has concluded I am wondering how they will fill the remaining 10 episodes. I love Jak Doo and he is clearly steadfast in his love and intent on staying in his marriage but I did not like how he handled the separation. And I hope they don't take the angst too far to fill in the remaining episodes because this drama works when Jak Doo and Seung Joon are together. I still love the halmonis and Eric and am wondering whether we lost the country bumpkin we all love forever.
That Man Oh Soo: I am betting on gramps to come to the rescue with the missing volume of the book.

I am not one to quit on shows but this spring has been the spring of dropped shows. I think it is because the current good ones have been sooo good, that everything else has paled in comparison.
Dropped shows: Should We Kiss First, Switch, Mystery Queen 2 (this one made me so sad because season one was terrific!) and Good Witch. I may pick one or two back up later in a binge watch, but the jury is still out on most of these.
Still enjoying Ajusshi very very much. I never know what to expect from each episode but I can count on it being riveting and beautifully shot. And sometimes surprisingly funny. Ki Hoon running around in the background looking for the guy his brother fought with was so stinking funny....
I picked up My Husband Oh Jak Doo and like watching it. Is it just me, though, who thinks the sound is weird? Especially when Uee is talking? I can’t figure out what it is but I get distracted by it quite often.

i'm so grateful for your, mary and john's comments. The thing about watching QSD 9 years after it aired is that I don't know anybody who's watching it now and hardly have anyone to gush about it to. =/ Where is the Deokman army?

I watched the behind the scene videos of Bidam's last fighting scene and I cried so much, Kim Nam Gil was really into his character and it felt so real..
I haven't found DB when QSD was aired, and all I could do was fangirling by myself, especially at Bidam's first appearance at the cave, his first berserk mode on fight over chicken meat, and Hwarang tournament.
Oh, do you like their OST too? My personal favorite is Wind Flower 😊 and the song which was being sung by Lee Yo Won and Kim Nam Gil

@keiru Are you kidding me? I am obsessed with the soundtrack. =P I downloaded the full OST last night including Lee Yo Won and Kim Nam Gil's songs. Made Yesong's version of Wind Flower my ringtone for calls and IU's version the ringtone for Whatsapp group notifications lol.. and I've been replaying all major Bideok scenes, cast interviews, the award ceremonies, and BTS videos all day. I couldn't find any recaps for QSD on DB though. They didn't recap it right?

Kim Nam Gil does all his own stunts?! Is he trained in martial arts? The sword fights were really cool. He wouldn't be out of place in a Chinese wuxia drama at all.

@keiru I just watched the making of the final scene on YouTube. Both Uhm Tae Woong and Kim Nam Gil had stunt doubles. Not sure whether to be relieved or disappointed that there were stunt doubles. Still, that final scene was breathtaking.

BTW, do you know if Yesong has been involved in other drama OSTs? I adore his voice.

He had a double stunt but he was so cool when he did a few fighting scenes by himself too 😊 Their instrumental OST are also good I will never erase it from my playlist along with Princess Hours and Rebel OST
As far as I know, Yesung has sung quite a lot of drama soundtrack. My favorite is 'It has to be you' from Cinderella's stepsister OST

@keiru I have the Cinderella Sister OST song but I always thought it was sung by Yesung of Super Junior and not the Yesong who sung Wind Flower.

Wait what? 😮 I didn't know that it was another Ye Sung ( Is that why you write it as Ye Song ?)
I'm sorry, I really thought that it was SJ's Ye Sung, the song has his signature raspy voice. My life has been a lie ! 😆

haha.. yea, I was confused too when I downloaded the OST last night.
Anyway, it's this video that had me convinced it was definitely not SuJu's Yesung:

The writers totally turned the history upside down for the fans.
Fan service at its highest, at least it was enjoyable and entertaining.

Agreed.. I found Deokman's character really well-written. Haven't seen such a resourceful and whip-smart female lead in an Asian show in ages. Oh and I wanted to catalogue Go Hyun Jung's expressions. Every character in this show had purpose and agency. Love it to bits!

I loved the Deokman arc of the story. Also, the tragic love between So-hwa and Chil-Sook. MiShil = A fascinating character brought to life by the wonderful Ko Hyun-Jung.

I can't quite figure Sohwa out. Did she love Chilsuk or was it unrequited love on his part? I had the impression she feared him.

I guess they grew closer when they were together but they couldn't really confess their feelings, and I believe both of them have genuine feelings for each other by the end of the drama

April 22, 2018 at 7:45 AM
@keiru if that's the case, wouldn't that be an interesting parallel to Bidam and Deokman's relationship? Fearing and suspecting someone you're in love with/attracted to.

@zoeraindasherbenji
Sohwa was the queen's maid therefore she was a royal servant who wasn't allowed to have that kind of relationship with anyone.
Technically, the women in the palace belongs to the king.

@kiara palace rules aside, I think, in the drama at least, Deokman would have allowed a relationship between Sohwa and whoever she loved. She knew Jukbang was flirting with Sohwa and allowed it. Though if it was Chilsuk, I'm not so sure.

Yes if the fans were rooting for it, the writers would've probably grant their wish.

She did fear him at first, eventually I do think they harbored genuine feelings for one another.

@kiara there was one thing that bothered me. They made a big deal about keeping Chilsuk in the dark about kidnapping Sohwa and there was no payoff from that. If Chilsuk had known Mishil was the one who kept Sohwa captive, he would have turned on her.

I know am late to the show but this has my heart for this season and I'm definitely going to remember this show for long time.My ajushhi you have made the first half of the year special. After just between lovers I never thought I'll watch any melo because that was perfect but my ajushhi is even better than that. After mother and wise prison life, this show is the best.I love realism and the raw emotions. The characters are real and relatable. The relationship between ji an and dong Hoon is so beautiful.I love this. Thanks for this show. And love you IU ........😘😘😘😘
Pretty noona is good too but still it's not something fresh and I feel like replying the same thing.but Jung hae in is love
Poetry is my crack after my ajushhi...

LOL! You are funny.
I think we will have to wait my Ajusshi to end, in order to know if it is better than Mother or Just between lovers.
So far, I would say they are all in the same level.
Wise prison Playbook was also a very wonderful show, but I don't think if fits into a Melo.

You Who Forgot Poetry: I genuinely think this drama gets better every week.
Live: Oof, there were so many great moments this week, but I always struggle to sit through rape cases. Those poor girls.
Pretty Noona: I find it very hard to critically analyse this drama, it's just lovely. I just enjoy every moment.
Shitsuren Chocolatier: Okay, seriously, anyone who didn't get what they expected from The Great Seducer should watch this, it has everything: anti-hero, morally ambiguous characters, slightly ambiguous lovelines...
Baek-hee Has Returned: So, this is the Korean spin on Mamma Mia? I actually love it. I'm halfway through, and I'm just so proud of my Kim Sun-oh Ajusshi for getting a lead role. ♥
The Gentlemen of Wolgyesu Tailor Shop: Yay, everybody is a couple now! Finally! I'm started to like the characters more, but the fact that every Mum in this show thinks their child can't make their own choices makes me want to throw something at the TV.

Re: Shitsuren: I watched a few eps as it was airing and found it hard to continue because I didn't like any of the characters >< (even though the drama was quite self-aware wrt their issues). I haven't picked it up since. Is it worth trying again?

I agree, the characters are awful (bar Elena, and my poor sad sack Rikudou), but I completely believe that the drama has made them unlikable on purpose. I find it addictive; despite the fact I'm not really rooting for anyone to get together, watching them play games and set themselves up to be knocked down again is sadistically amusing (that sounds bad XD). I like how out of the three woman who love Souta, the only one who's feelings some to come from a genuine place is the one in the most in-genuine relationship with him!
Saeko-san, in particular, is fun to watch, because it's clear that in her interactions with others she is always completely fake, and never gives anything of herself away. She squeaks away in that high-pitched tone, and you find yourself frustrated, but then she goes dead in the eyes and you're captivated. I won't recommend if you prefer depictions of more healthy relationships (I actually surprised myself by enjoying this show), but if I've convinced you, watch for her - Ishihara Satomi is my favourite actress!
