Premiere Watch: Suits, Mistress

It’s remake week in dramaland, with two new adaptations on the way based on well-established series abroad. Not that this is any guarantee of a remake’s success, mind you, since we’ve seen many adaptations crash and burn on just such expectations. But when has that ever stopped me before?

Suits

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: KBS
Genre: Legal drama
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: I’m eager to check out the Korean adaptation of Suits, the slick USA Network show about a genius college dropout who makes a living illegally taking the bar exam for other people. He accidentally ends up going on a job interview for the city’s ace lawyer and becomes his newest protege at the firm, despite not having a license to practice law. The original is zippy and quippy, but I’m in this for the all-star pairing of Jang Dong-gun and Park Hyung-shik, since I expect them to have all sorts of bromantic chemistry. At the helm will be PD Kim Jin-woo, who directed the first (and by far superior) season of Mystery Queen and was the second PD on Healer, so I’m expecting something stylish. You can’t get my hopes up about a meaty role for Park Hyung-shik and disappoint, right? I rest my case.

Mistress

Time slot: Saturday & Sunday
Broadcaster: OCN
Genre: Mystery thriller
Episode count: 12

Reasons to watch: The 2008 BBC series Mistresses has already been remade into an American version once before in 2013, and is now getting a Korean adaptation on OCN. I haven’t seen either of the previous versions, but they’re definitely playing up the mystery thriller aspect in this one, about four women with dubious morals and conflicting motives, all bound together by one murder. It’s directed by PD Han Ji-seung of Valid Love and Alone in Love, which is definitely a reason to check it out. I wish I could say the same for the cast, led by Han Ga-in, but I just can’t, because even in the teasers her acting makes me cringe a little. She’s had six years off; maybe she’ll have improved…?

I'll be watching both of them! We think we will be recapping both of them as well. Or maybe at least one of them?

We might not recap Suits because our Wednesdays/Thursdays will be very happily filled with My Ajusshi, Switch, and Come Here and Hug Me (which premiers on May 16th).

But we might recap Suits because I have been waiting for it to air for what feels like ages! I didn't get a chance to marathon the original, but I think that only plays in the remakes favor since I won't have any preconceived notions. I did try to watch the first episode of the original, but I couldn't get past the machinations to make the smart kid an actual fake lawyer. I did here that it got way better after that though.

With Mistresses, I really just want to recap it because it is on OCN so maybe Viki/Dramafever won't pick it up? Has anyone heard who will be streaming it? I really loved Children of a Lesser God, which was my first OCN drama and gave me high expectations of the network. If Mistresses goes well then we may as well continue with Life on Mars up next.

Come Here and Hug me airs about two weeks into May and is a drama that I want to watch only for the two leads. I really don't want to watch a melo again, but I love Jang Ki-young in Go Back Spouses and My Ajusshi so I feel like he will deliver a great performance. I also love Jin Ki-ju from Misty and am happy that she has a lead role so quickly. Her acting is still questionable, but only because her role was so limited in Misty. One drawback is that this show is on MBC, which almost guarantees that it will be bad. I hope it isn't though.

I am so excited for May, there are so many drama's to watch!

Park Hyung Shik! He looks like his 'what's with my family' days. This one better be good and not end up like entourage.

Here's my reaction to all Premiere Watch news now: 🤷🏻‍♀️ oh yeah? Let's not hold our breaths until we know who has the license to broadcast it where we live. I am very sour grapes lately 🍇(cough Noona and Miracle cough) 😒 Big sigh 🌬

Right! What is going on with Kdrama's lately? It is like we are back in the stone ages before streaming sites. I forgot how to be resourceful in finding Kdrama's to watch, but now I have to dust off all my sleuthing skills and make sure my virus blocker is up to date.

"Take a step closer. And that one step changes the relationship. One step."
One of my most favorite Korean Drama quotes ever.

My Mom was just asking me when Park Hyung-shik's next drama will be out and I said it will still be a little while away. I didn't realize it was only a week away! I never saw the original Suits so this will be like a whole new show for me.

I've never even heard of Mistress, the originals or that there was a Korean remake. It sounds very interesting. I am thrilled there are more and more women-centric dramas coming out. But I am severely disappointed Han Ga-In is in it. I've only seen her in Moon Embracing the Sun and she was like a board in that. Hopefully she has improved since then, and if not, hopefully the other 3 actresses can help carry the drama.

I remember being a little bored with the original Suits, and I think kdramatizing it would make it more interesting.

I am not familiar with both of the original versions, so I don't have any expectations. SUITS is definitely on my must watch list. Jang Dong Gun was like, super swoony in A Gentleman's Dignity that I kinda consider him as one of my #foreveroppa already. Haha. Loved Park Hyung Shik in SWDBS. #foreveroppa + #foreverdongsaeng = #SOLD

Will there be any drama recap? Drama recaps seem to beof low priority on this site now.

I only watched the first season of the original suits but l loved the dynamics between Mike and Harvey, that's what really drew me into the show. The legal cases were hard to follow but I can tell the relationship is going to be just as great. Now.... only question is where can I watch Suits? Doesn't seem to be on Dramafever or Viki.. :[

My guess is Viu got it? Someone is doing professional subs, and they were up on the grey sites quickly, but it doesn't seem to be anywhere legally in the states.

Ohh! Darn :( I like keeping up with shows as they air. Oh well guess that opens up more time for other dramas.

Anybody know where Suits will be airing? Is this gonna be just like Pretty Noona, with no legal way of watching it in North America?

Looks like it. The other remakes of American shows haven't gotten N American lisencing either (Good Wife, Entourage, Criminal Minds). I think they think we won't want to watch a cross-cultural remake of a show we have already seen. I think they should research how many different versions of Mischeivious Kiss I have watched and reassess.

I looked up the original Mistresses and it really doesn't seem like a mystery thriller at all, more of a soap opera really. It just looks like they're just taking the name and doing whatever they want.

First heard about the Suits remake from Sebastian Lee at the KCON 2016 Dramabeans panel. I was excited to see one of my fave USA shows be remade. At the time it sounded like Lee Min Ho was going to be lead. Then in 2017 it was announced PHS was cast and that made me even more happy. Esp after SWDBS!!! The US cast and producers have tweeted support and have given shoutouts to the SK Cast. This show has so much potential with these leads. I really love PHS and want him to do well. My expectations are really high! Can't wait!!!!

I'm about to download the first episode so fingers crossed. I'm desperately waiting for the first episode recap and dare I say I'm here for Park Hyun Shik. Also as a long time fan of suits (I'm in season 7) I can't wait. :)

PHS represents Mike so well. I'm still waiting to see if Chae Jung-Ah would do justice to the character of Donna. But for now I want more

watched 2 episodes of Suits and love it. The casting is flawless for the main and supporting casts. Almost like the 1st two episode of the original but with sight variations.

I loving it

Maybe it will end up on Netflix like Pretty Noona who buys me food?
Everytime a drama is not available on Viki or DF is ends up on Netflix (or so it seems to me). If that is the case it will popup next week since episodes are always delayed by a week.

I watched Suits and I loved it from the flashiness to the charisma and boldness of Jang Donggeun plus the nerdy Park Hyungshik. I don't know how the American drama went because I never watched it but I think I will probably check out this drama and watch it until the end~ It was quite entertaining.

I just finished watching 2 episodes of Suits. I have never watched the original of this, but i swear i am glad that i did not watch the original.Otherwise i would be comparing the quality to this and that and that would make me seem to less like it.
Anyways, i really loved the 2 episodes i watched. A great start and i can say i am HOOKED to this one.

Park hyungshik looks so different here than he was in Hwarang and SWDBS. He seems like a totally different person. And that is a sign of a good actor.

Jang dong guen really gives the feeling of the ace lawyer. His body language , his looks. everything screams rich, suave high level attorney.

Can i say i want the friends gf to be with Yeon-woo. They have such sizzling chemistry together. But sad that they will not be the end game.
