Hwang Jung-eum eyes SBS romance with Namgoong Min
by javabeans
Will it be a TV reunion for Hwang Jung-eum (Lucky Romance) and Namgoong Min (Falsify)? They’re both in contention for a new drama titled Handsome Guy and Jung-eum, seven years after they played siblings in the heartwarming weekend drama Can You Hear My Heart.
Namgoong Min’s possible casting was announced a couple weeks ago, and now it’s Hwang Jung-eum who is considering the leading role opposite him. Namgoong Min’s character is named Hoon-nam, which is a groanworthy pun since that also translates to Handsome Guy. Not to be outdone, the character Hwang Jung-eum is up to play is also named Jung-eum. Well, it’ll be easy to keep the names straight in this one, at least.
The two leads have differing stances on love (naturally): He’s thoroughly analyzed theories on love and rejects the idea of romance and dating, while she has made it her life’s goal to marry someone she loves. Her character is a former competitive diver who now works as a couples manager. The plot incorporates a variety of characters who have difficulty dating, and in the process of helping them navigating the tricky waters of modern romance, they also come to understand what real love is.
These are two actors with a lot of personal charisma who can be really charming when they have good chemistry with their co-stars, so I’m looking forward to seeing them fumble their way through modern love. I especially love Namgoong Min in the rom-com genre (he’s just so weird), and I’d like to see Hwang Jung-eum bounce back with a good project after her last was a dud (Lucky Romance, where she played the world’s most frustrating doormat of a heroine), so I’ll be hoping they both confirm the project.
Handsome Guy and Jung-eum will be an SBS drama to follow the upcoming Jang Geun-seok and Han Ye-ri drama Switch, and plans to premiere in May.

Yay Hwang Jung-eum is returning to dramaland, I have missed her so much. I loved Lucky Romance, but I'm not too crazy about this character. In any case, I look forward to her infusing her trademark boisterous self into any show.

HJE is fantastic
U guys should see secret , kill me heal me , can you hear my heart to see her perfection
Some bad projects don't make her bad actress , she just need a good one to glow

I couldn't get into Lucky Romance, so I'm glad to be able to see her on screen again. Both she and NGM are capable of that quirky atmosphere.
I know HJE is infamous for her screechy performances, but
sometimes, I do wonder if directors pick her sometimes specifically because she can do that screechy, over-the-top performance that they consider good comedy and want in their dramas.
I think she's a pretty good actress during those toned-down moments and in melodramatic moments. I feel like she conveys emotions very well, despite some unfortunate plastic surgery choices. Even when she's over-the-top in the beginning episodes of a drama, I know that she'll get me feeling for her soon enough.

I think melos fit her the best to be honest. She was amazing in Secret but it's sad that people only remember her by the roles she's done that haven't complimented her real acting skills (such as KMHM and She Was Pretty). I dunno how I feel about this casting...it sounds like her character might be similar to those kind of roles and I can't really see the pairing either :/

interesting pairing! looking forward for this. her last drama doesn't impress me that much, might be how she portray the character or just the lack of effort in writing her character in the drama. i love her in secret and kmhm anyway..

The amount of negativity directed at Hwang Jung-eum is disheartening, but not surprising. She must be an easy target because everything, from from the tonality of her voice to how she moves to how she looks, is disparaged. How is it that these people, who profess to pass judgment on HJE as an actress, only do so on the basis of Lucky Romance and 'CYHMH'? It must be only a handful of people watched Secret and Kill Me, Heal Me, because, coupled with Endless Love and She Was Pretty, there would be no doubt that HJE has the requisite emotional and physical range of a good, solid, entertaining, and engaging actor.

certainly agree with you.
i really feels bad for her as no matter how good of a actress she is, she still gets all those negative comments abt her tones, acting and what not.
i just see her as a different kind of actress and i love the way she acts, portrays her character. Secret and KMHM was the best one so far where she played great role....

I-fans when they start once their hate bandwagon, they will hate forever. And the hate is harsher when it comes to actresses. Coming from predominantly female audience.

Yeah, you'll find complains about her screech, her overactive and lastly her plastic surgery.....the funny thing is all the actors and actresses who are wrinkle free, have good hair, complexion....none of it is all natural. Its just not that obvious. She seems like a favorite punching bag. And she didn't even screech in Lucky Romance, her character was ridiculous, absurd but that has more to do with writing. As for Kill Me, Heal Me, the PD could have told her to tone it down but he never did. I've seen plenty BTS....this woman isn't afraid to look ugly or physical comedy. She does as told, works hard, her costars love her and production crew is fond of her work ethic. So, lets just hate on her based on two dramas forever. If I had done what they do to Ji Sung after seeing Swallow the Sun, I'd have never seen Secret.

I respectfully disagree. I've only watched "She Was Pretty" and "Kill Me, Heal Me," but I did not like her in either. I forgive her for the former - I don't think Park Seo-joon was particularly good in that one either - but I can't absolve her for KMHM, which I otherwise adored.

I've been a fan of Hwang Jung Eum since Giant and love her in every drama she was in that I watched (watched everything except Lucky Romance). Even though I'm more excited to see her in a different genre than a romcom, I must say that I miss her screen presence so much that I might watch any future drama she accepts.

The first drama that I saw of her’s was The Secret and I really enjoyed watching her act there. It was actually restraint and very well done. But I do get the concerns of overacting because she did do that in KMHM, so, I’m hoping this drama is more on the lines of The Secret because even NGM tends to go overboard at times with his expressions.

I was tentatively looking forward to Min Namgoong's new drama (I watched him in "Chief Kim" and liked him there), but I guess I should look elsewhere. I've watched Hwang Jung-eum in "She Was Pretty" and in "Kill Me, Heal Me" and she was a major minus for both imo. She was a bit better in the latter than in the former, but in both cases she over-acted a lot and was just kinda unbelievable. She took characters who, on paper, were 3D and flattened them into planar caricatures.

I love her and will watch anything with her, she is such a delight and mood up-lifter , making me lol every time, which is very rare to see in other actresses doing rom coms. I can say that her dramas are pure entertainment!
