Lee Sang-yoon stops time for Lee Sung-kyung in About Time

Lee Sang-yoon (Whisper) has signed on to be Lee Sung-kyung’s (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju) leading man for the upcoming fantasy-romance drama About Time (full title is now A Moment I Want to Stop: About Time), which is a pairing I can see working. The tvN series is about a woman with an “unfortunate fate” who can see the lifespan clocks for people, and the love story that unfolds when she meets a man who can somehow stop her time.

Lee Sung-kyung’s character is a musical actor specializing in ensemble work and is named Choi Michaela. Michaela has accepted her unhappy lot in life, but when she meets a man who can stop her lifespan clock, she decides to pour all her efforts into somehow hanging on to him.

He is Lee Do-ha, the chief director of a cultural foundation owned by a chaebol family. Seemingly perfect on the outside, he carries an air of coolness about him. He stops Michaela’s clock unintentionally but ends up being harassed because of it, since she approaches him with threats, seduction, and “a cute obsession.”

I’m still not quite clear on the purpose or function of these clocks—is it just that she is haunted by knowing everyone’s lifespans, or is there more to them?—but I find the premise pretty intriguing. (It vaguely reminds of the quirky romance movie Timer, where people can enable a timer that tells them when they’ll meet their soulmate and features a heroine whose soulmate hasn’t yet turned his clock on.) If anything, I imagine it’s pretty grim knowing exactly when you’re scheduled to die, so it makes sense that discovering the ability to stop that time would turn your life upside-down.

Most of all, I love Lee Sung-kyung being oddball and cute and was charmed by her last role in Weightlifting Fairy, so I’m looking forward to seeing her next drama. And Lee Sang-yoon is always welcome in my book, but more so when he’s being a romantic lead rather than a villain.

About Time comes from PD Kim Hyung-shik of Twenty Again, Sign, and Ghost, and will air on tvN in May.

Interesting premise. Love Sungkyung and cannot wait to see her back on the small screen. It seems 2018 is the comeback year of my fave actresses. First Yejin. Now Sungkyung. Waiting for my next gal.

I may be the minority who can't feel the pairing works yet, since he just worked with similar-age actresses like Choi Jiwoo, Kim Haneul & Lee Boyoung consecutively.

But I will never say no to Lee Sangyoon as a romantic lead. NEVER~

Not too excited with this pairing either, but maybe it will work? He worked fine with Kim So-eun in Liar Game, although not for romantic pairing and I was kinda hoping to see them in a romantic drama in the future because they have that chemistry. Even in Whisper, he had the chemistry with Park Se-young but Park also has some mature vibe. Lee Sang-yoon mostly did drama with similar age group, so this is quite an interesting change.

I have always felt that he looks rather green beside actors of Lee Boyoung's and Kim Hanuel's calibre. So perhaps this is better for him. These two seem more on similar levels.

I have to admit he's not at their level yet, but he's more than serviceable in his roles (I can't say for Whisper coz I didn't watch it). I love him in Twenty Again & On The Way to The Airport. I definitely won't put him on Lee Sungkyung's level.

He isn't among the best actors out there and I sometimes had problems to connect with his acting especially in Goddess of Fire but he is definitely not at Lee Sung-kyung's level and it is definitely not because he is a senior. Sorry, I was kinda surprised to see his name being putting in the same group with someone who is still less experienced actress and has a lot to improve.

Maybe I just can't connect to his acting. Because although I quite like him, I never feel he is very good unless among lesser actors and actresses.

1

actually i wanted to try Goddess of Fire for LSY but didn't get to do so. how did u find the drama?

0

Goddess of Fire was quite boring imo, I prefer his other sageuk The Duo.

0

i didn't know about The Duo. i just googled it & the cast totally caught my interest. i gonna put it on my list, thanks!

anw, how did The Duo ended? who got the girl? i hope no one (from the main cast) dies? 👉👈

0

What's is surprising is that against the acting tour de force that was Shin Song Rok in Liar Game, he more than held his own. He wasn't lacking and that character required poker face and therefore, great nuance. He was great, maybe it has to do with the character.

Sadly, OCN can't seem to understand romance. But does blood and gore pretty well. This thread explains what a few Beanies who have seen it think:

http://www.dramabeans.com/members/silvermists/activity/358576/

My view is: "Incredibly odd – it’s just off? The dialogue is obviously scripted, the actors are stiff, the lights too bright, the plot weirdly edited. Erm… nope"

I was really looking forward to it too. :(

I just watched epi 1 but I kinda OK with it? Maybe because I didn't have expectation after seeing Meloholic, and after comparing both drama, Meloholic was just like WTF drama.. lol. But agree actors kinda stiff. Lee Jung-shin still need to do more supporting roles, and work with seasoned actors. To be fair, this was supposed to be just a webdrama for SBS Plus, so this is kind of quality that we can expect from any webdrama. I don't want to be so demanding towards OCN as well, they are still in experimenting stage for romance genre. They also took time to build their image for thriller genre. I just hope their next romcom drama will do better because I can't afford to see it turn into disaster, not when my favs are there.

Its not that OCN doesn't understand romance. They aren't making these shows, they're just airing them. Longing Heart was originally supposed to be an SBS Plus drama

It's funny, I laughed when I saw the difference between the mild interesting in this comment section, over the complete meltdown in Radio Romance over the age gap. But at least a few of you are consistent.

Required fields are marked *

Lee Sung-kyung is 27 years old. Kim So-hyun is 18, still a teenager even though she’s legally an adult. That makes a big difference for many people. Plus, how young KSH looks in the Radio romance teasers adds to the squick factor.

You don’t have to agree, but I think it’s easy to see why people see the two situations differently.

1
4
reply

Required fields are marked *

Agreed with @mindy, it's not the age gap but Kim So Hyun's age and appearance.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I honestly think if there's an issue, then it'd be that she won't be a convincing for her role. Period. That people feel uncomfortable based on appearance only is even sillier than just the age difference itself.

People are free to feel whatever they want, but I think people made it a bigger deal than it needs to be. The fact that you and another Beaner defensively replied to my comment proves this point. That they try to rationalize it makes their outcry seem even more superficial and antiquated.

1. You selectively chose to overlook the words 'age', '18', 'teenager', 'not the age-gap', 'Plus, her appearance..' etc in the two responses to your comment. In other words, missed the point.

2. Any reply will sound defensive if you make (harmless, I know) sarcastic statements like the one above: "It's funny.... At least a few of you are consistent." But a reply means one doesn't want to be misunderstood - which I usually think is a good thing.

And which is why I'm responding again. But that's the last I'll say on this.

Peace.

2

^Replying back precisely because I think you also misunderstood. My stance is that she's an adult, he's an adult, and they're simply actors playing their parts. Am I going to judge the drama before it even starts? No. I have to see the performance to make my decision. I don't think it makes a difference if they do this project when they're both a few years older. They'll honestly still look the same because botox work magic, and they're acting out roles, not themselves. And you disagree with that, that's fine. Then you added appearances into the deciding factor that makes it 'squicky', and that's the point that I'm openly mocking because I think it's superficial.

Of course, I welcome discourse. I think it's not so much a discourse when 100+ people or comments are repeating the same opinion. When you defend your stance by repeating the same opinion, you're not making a new point or adding new information to the debate. You're beating a dead horse. Also, you made the assumption that I was being sarcastic. No, I honestly think it's funny and I literally laughed because I read the two articles back to back, and the difference between the two comment section is that jarring.

I have no ill will towards you and those who disagree. I still think you opinion is based on antiquated ideals, but thanks for trying. Enjoy your drama adventures.

I don't quite understand the plot, but I'm gonna check this for Lee Sang-yoon and his dimples.😎 I can see this pairing works despite of 9 years age diff (especially Lee Sung-kyung is 28 y.o, not a 20 y.o girl that would make this pairing seems off). I just hope Lee Sung-kyung's character is not over-the-top this time. I found she is at her best in the role like in Doctors instead of characters like Kim Bok-joo ( I know it was her breakout role.. but I just didn't really enjoy her acting at whole tbh).

Oh yes, I'm so psyched to hear more of her singing! I always wondered why YG didn't take advantage of her singing ability by letting her release some solo stuff. She's done a few collabs but that's it. She's no Lee Hi but she's surprisingly good for someone who's not actually a singer!

1

That's exactly what came to mind, Master's Sun.

I have really come to like Lee Sung-kyung. She seems to steal every scene she's in and is adorable doing it.

Even with the age gap with this pairing with Lee Sang-yoon, I can get behind it. Because she seems like she can hold her own with Lee Sang-yoon. Whereas, some of the other age gap pairings aren't so much the age difference, but the acting experience difference.

I think it depends on her character. If they make her some innocent lamb puppy( like Lee Yu Bi in SWWTN, urg!), then it may take awhile to warm up to the pairing.

In CITT, she was a glamorous drama queen, and she had a very antagonistic chemistry with Park Hae Jin( and Hae Jin also had it with Seo Kang Joon, and with Kim Go Eun at first, and- that drama had many antagonistic relationships!).

Looking forward to see Lee Sung Kyung back on my screen. I miss her so much!! I hope Lee sang yoon's character will be different from the other ones he did because I haven't yet liked any of his characters yet, in Lair game (he thinks he is too smart) or On the way to Airport (tries to be too smooth and is the most rich jobless guy who buys last minute tickets to everywhere) or Whisper (he is plain stupid at least in the first 5 episodes, it took him so long to understand the game happening) or in Twenty again (he is too judgmental and almost harasses the female lead in the first few episodes). Now again he is from a chaebol family with an air of coolness (does he carry AC with him everywhere?) whatever it means.
But still I will watch!

The plot's a bit vague but that's understandable since it's still in the works. Would love to see LSK in a more mature role. By mature, I mean something where she doesn't need to over react just to get her point across. I loved her at WLFKBJ but too much exaggeration is too much at some point that it's no longer cute but annoying.

I've only seen LSY in Angel Eyes so I don't really have an idea how good he is but I'm giving him a chance. ;)

I don't get why people make a fuss on the age gap thingy, I'm down as long as the male lead isn't 20 years or more older. Also as long as he doesn't look that he's that *much* older.
