Black: Episode 18 (Final)

The end is finally here, and it’s time to see how our characters deal with the consequences of their actions from twenty years ago. Will all the details come together to make sense of everything that has happened so far, or will we end up banging our heads against the wall, as confused as we were when this adventure first began?

FINAL EPISODE RECAP

Ha-ram’s father followed Scarface during his investigation of the arson case and he saw Joon’s yellow smoke flare, realizing Joon was in danger. Ha-ram’s father found Joon in the glass factory, but before Joon could tell Ha-ram’s father what was wrong, Joon was shot.

Ha-ram’s father was shocked to realize that it was Ha-ram who shot Joon, and as he checked on his daughter who knocked herself out from the recoil, Joon staggered out of the factory.

Black struggles with the realization that it was Ha-ram who shot him, wondering if this is why his head hurt so much when he first met Ha-ram. As Black broods on the cliffside, Hip-hop worries that Black wasn’t able to find the tape and that the Death Squad will be coming for Black any minute now.

Hip-hop urges Black to take Leo’s laptop to the police and show them Leo’s confession that Moo-gang’s mother actually killed Joon, so then the police can find Joon’s body and Black can return to his true form. But Black doesn’t want Ha-ram to find out the truth—that she shot Joon, thinking he was her father’s Shadow.

Ha-ram visits Black at his home, worried about him since last she saw him he was dealing with an agonizing headache. Remembering Ha-ram’s confession that she likes him just because it’s him, as well as her mother’s warning for him to stay far away from her, Black orders Ha-ram to get lost. Grumbling about her ability to see Shadows, he kicks her out of his house, much to her bewilderment.

Ha-ram’s mother finds her sitting dazed and depressed at home. Ha-ram blankly says that Mom should have just killed her back then, since she’s such a monster. Realizing that Black must have said something to her, Mom tries to comfort Ha-ram.

Ha-ram’s mother confronts Black, fiercely standing up for her suffering daughter. Black points out that he had to be cruel to Ha-ram so she would leave him alone. Besides, Black plans to disappear just as Ha-ram’s mother wishes, so Mom should be happy.

But her accusations ring in his ears as he drives away to give the police Leo’s laptop. He determinedly tells himself that he doesn’t care, then sighs as he suddenly turns the car around.

Ha-ram wakes up to finds some food left out for her by her concerned mother. Ha-ram can’t stop thinking about the way Black kicked her out, calling her eyes obnoxious. She cries to herself as she says that he’s the obnoxious one, but she slowly reaches for a chopstick and aims it at her eye.

Black bursts into her place, preventing her from stabbing out her eyes. Ha-ram pleads with him to let her go, but he patiently holds onto her as she weeps, gently forcing her to let go of the chopstick.

Ha-ram’s mother overhears all this and suddenly apologizes to Black as he leaves Ha-ram’s place. Mom realizes that Ha-ram is struggling but that Black is only person who can help her. Mom pleads with Black to stay by Ha-ram’s side, protecting her for the rest of her life.

Hip-hop worries that if Black doesn’t submit the laptop as evidence soon, the police won’t be able to find Joon’s body before the Death Squad arrive to drag Black away, which will result in Black’s memories as Joon being erased.

Black wants the truth of what happened to Joon to be revealed, though. He painfully realizes that if Joon hadn’t died like that, Black could still be living a happy, human life.

Black ultimately decides to destroy the laptop, determined to stay in Moo-gang’s body and live as a human, declaring that it’s his second chance at life. That way Ha-ram also won’t find out the truth about Joon’s death and her role in it. But Joseon points out that Black being stuck in Moo-gang’s body isn’t for another chance at life, but a chance to reveal how he died.

Black brings Ha-ram to see a doctor who tells her that the bullet in Black’s brain may cause him to act irrationally at times due to the nerves it’s pressing against, but it doesn’t mean Black can’t have a long and normal life.

Black uses the “bullet pressing against nerves” to explain that he doesn’t remember how he treated her last night and only heard about it from her mother (which, as we know, is a lie). He apologizes for his actions, and reassures Ha-ram that he treasures her eyes.

He plans to get surgery from a world-renowned brain surgeon in America. Ha-ram says she’ll go with him, and Black quickly says that he’ll be going his his mother (well, Moo-gang’s mother), and that he’ll be leaving soon. Then he hugs Ha-ram close.

Black meets up with Soo-wan, remembering the first time that Joon saw Seon-young and the way his young adolescent heart fluttered. Black now realizes that the reason Moo-gang’s heart always felt strange when he was with Soo-wan was because it was Joon’s heart, fluttering for his first love.

Soo-wan has changed her mind about moving to America. Instead, she plans to have an interview with the press. She’ll tell them what happened with Congressman Kim back then, which will force the prosecution to investigate the case again.

Black urges Soo-wan to stick with her plan to move to America, promising that he’ll take care of Congressman Kim. But first he has a favor to ask of her.

Black takes Soo-wan to Joon’s mother, and both women cry tears of joy to be reunited since they were like mother and daughter. Joon’s mother apologizes for sending Soo-wan to live with Clara, blaming herself for what happened back then. Soo-wan says if Joon’s mother is truly sorry, then she can make it up to her by moving to America with Soo-wan.

Black goes to the columbarium and pours the ashes from Joon’s urn into the nearly empty urn of Seung-chul (since when there’s only a hand to bury, there aren’t many ashes). As he sets Seung-chul’s urn next to the urns of Seung-chul’s parents, Black apologizes that it’s taken so long for Seung-chul to finally be returned to his proper place.

Leo panics when he sees that his laptop is missing, but is more shocked when he turns around to find Black pointing a gun at him. Black insists that Loser is in Leo’s body, and if Loser doesn’t come out on the count of three, Black will shoot Leo and drag Loser out anyway.

At first Leo looks confused, but then suddenly he collapses as Loser leaps out of Leo’s body. Loser profusely apologizes and begs forgiveness, wondering how Black figured it out. Black says that it was from the laptop’s recording—Leo clearly died from an overdose, but when the shower stall door opened on its own and then Leo suddenly got up again, it was obvious a Reaper possessed him.

Black is annoyed that Loser has been messing with him all this time, but Loser argues that it’s all Black’s fault for sending him on an assignment by himself in the first place. He knew Black wanted him to mess up so Black could get a new partner.

But when Loser realized that Leo the soul he was going to reap, he decided to get his revenge for all the ills Leo caused him by borrowing Leo’s glamorous life for a while, even it meant being sent to the fiery pits once the Death Squad caught him.

Right after Loser possessed Leo’s body, he heard voices elsewhere in the hotel suite and hid himself. He saw Creepy Doc and Moo-gang’s mother arguing about stopping Moo-gang from investigating Joon’s death. Creepy Doc got so agitated that his Reaper tattoo glowed.

That’s when Loser discovered Creepy Doc was possessed by a Reaper, and since then they worked together. Black points out that Creepy Doc was possessed by the old woman who’s never been caught by the Death Squad, and that she actually tried to kill Leo so that Loser’s memory would be wiped.

Loser demands to speak to the old woman, but Black says that he’s already taken care of her.

Moo-gang’s mother hurries to Creepy Doc’s home, desperate to warn him that Black has found out the truth of Joon’s death. But Creepy Doc is dead.

Loser is shocked that Black killed Creepy Doc so that the old woman would be returned to the Death Squad, going back on his promise of helping her after she told him where to find Leo’s laptop.

Loser pleads with Black to let him stay in Leo’s body just a little longer, at least until Leo’s drama is finished filming, since Loser has always wanted to be an actor. Black says that Loser can live as a human for however long he wants—under one condition.

Man-soo inherits the entirety of Royal Group—the coerced contract Man-ho forced him to sign now considered null and void. Man-soo’s first act as the CEO of Royal Group is to halt all construction of the new mall, dedicating that space for a memorial to the people who died in the Mujin mall collapse. He then plans to break up the Royal Group conglomerate, relinquishing his role of CEO.

Joseon doesn’t trust Black to be able to live as a human without seeking vengeance on the people who ruined Joon’s life. But Black is determined to forget everything and stay by Ha-ram’s side, protecting her from any more harm.

Congressman Kim’s approval rating tanks and he’s ordered to resign from his position. He calls Leo, asking to meet at their old house in Mujin. Leo tries calling Black, but doesn’t get an answer.

Ha-ram hurries to the airport to say goodbye to Black before he leaves for America. Black hugs her tightly as she asks him to call her once he lands, and then they go their separate ways.

But instead of heading to a flight, Black watches as Ha-ram leaves the airport. Man-soo arrives just then, wanting also to say goodbye to Black, but Ha-ram says he’s too late. Man-soo happily hands her a life insurance contract, reminding her she promised to be his first client.

He also tells her about his plans for the Mujin memorial, and Ha-ram realizes that the time capsule is on the site. She hurries to Mujin to dig it up before the construction crew finds it.

Black waits at the airport for Soo-wan and Joon’s mother to arrive, since they’re the ones actually going to America. Soo-wan promises to take care of joon’s mother like she was her own, and then hopes Black will live happily-ever-after with Ha-ram. Now that Soo-wan and his mother are taken care of, Black focuses on his final mission.

Soo-wan and Joon’s mother make their way to airport security as Missing-finger watches. Oh, hey, I forgot about him! He reports to someone, letting them know that Seon-young is leaving the country, so it’s all taken care of.

Except when Soo-wan puts Joon’s mother’s purse into her suitcase, she sees a SIM card stuck in Moo-gang’s sweatshirt that Soo-wan was taking with her to America. Soo-wan realizes that this must be important, and sends Joon’s mother home while Soo-wan tries to reach Black.

Missing-finger is surprised and annoyed to see Soo-wan leave the airport. Soo-wan sticks the SIM card in her phone—it has Byung-tae’s burner phone number. Byung-tae answers, relieved that Moo-gang must have regained his memory.

But Soo-wan tells him that she needs to meet with him so they can figure out how to prosecute Congressman Kim.

Congressman Kim meets with Leo at their old Mujin house. He attributes Leo’s awkwardness to the way Congressman Kim beat up his son twenty years ago when he demanded to know where the tape went (but Leo’s awkwardness is actually attributed to Loser not being sure of what’s going on).

Soo-wan visits Byung-tae, desperate to know where the tape is so she can give it to the police and tell them everything. But Byung-tae says that he doesn’t have it—Ha-ram does. That information shocks Soo-wan—but not as much as suddenly getting a knife pressed against her neck, courtesy of Missing-finger.

Ha-ram digs up the time capsule and opens it, surprised to find a video tape inside. But then she remembers the day she discovered Joon leaving a video message for Seon-young. When he wasn’t looking, Ha-ram snuck inside and stole the tape from his backpack, her jealousy wanting her to prevent Seon-young from ever seeing it.

Ha-ram decides that at least she’ll be able to see Joon’s face again, so she starts to watch the video—only it’s the tape of Seon-young being raped by Congressman Kim. Horrified, Ha-ram quickly switches off the TV. She realizes that there are actually two tapes in the capsule. She grabs the other tape and puts it in the VCR.

Black goes to Congressman Kim’s office. Black doesn’t care if it means he’ll perish as a Reaper, he’s prepared to kill the congressman. But he’s too late—Congressman Kim has already hanged himself. Black doesn’t believe it’s suicide, and speculates that Man-ho was the one who ordered the hit.

Leo finds Black and tells him about meeting Congressman Kim that morning, who told him about the tape that Leo had apparently given away twenty years ago.

Black’s fractured memories start to return and he recalls young Leo accidentally running into him with his bike, causing Joon to be mildly injured. Leo took him to his house to get some first aid.

Joon saw a video camera and asked to borrow it so he could make sure his birthday tape for Seon-young recorded properly—only to discover the tape was missing from his bag (courtesy of Ha-ram).

Leo offered to let him use one of his father’s tapes to record a new birthday message, but when Joon tested the video to make sure it was blank, he saw it was the recording of Seon-young being raped.

When Joon was running from Scarface, he realized he was near where he and Ha-ram buried their time capsule. So he quickly hid the tape in there. Black goes to the spot where the time capsule was buried, shocked to see that the capsule has already been dug up.

Black deduces that Ha-ram was the one who took it, then worries that this must be why Ha-ram will die.

Ha-ram calls Chief Bong to let them know she has the tape, but as she leaves to bring the tape to them, Missing-finger and his men are ready to grab her. She tries to run and hide, but she’s no match for Missing-finger. Chief Bong and the detectives arrive to save her, but Missing-finger’s men overpower them.

Black speeds back to Seoul and finds Man-soo at his new insurance company. Black asks Man-soo to use his hacking skills to track down someone named Choi Geun-ho.

Choi Geun-ho, now a high-ranking government official, was originally the mayor of Mujin. Congressman Kim, back when he was a PD, blackmailed Choi Geun-ho for catching him having sex with Seon-young at a mountain cabin at the time the Mujin mall collapsed. In order to protect his political career, Choi Geun-ho was forced to support Congressman Kim.

Choi Geun-ho is also the person Missing-finger works for, so it’s on his behalf that Missing-finger sets Ha-ram up in an empty pool, her hands and feet bound to a metal chair. Chief Bong and the other detectives are also tied up and Missing-finger threatens to beat them to death if Ha-ram doesn’t tell him where she hid the video tape.

Ha-ram’s furious that Choi Geun-ho and Congressman Kim have covered up their crimes in such a brutal manner over the past twenty years, and refuses to tell them where she hid the tape. That is until she sees the Shadows next to the detectives as Missing-finger’s men beat them up. The detectives are dragged away, and Chief Bong shouts that they’d rather die than hide the truth, so Ha-ram shouldn’t tell Missing-finger anything.

Realizing that Ha-ram won’t tell him about the htape, Missing-finger starts to fill the swimming pool with water and then shows her two live wires. Since she’s in a metal chair, she’ll be immediately electrocuted once he drops the wire the water. Ha-ram still refuses to tell him where the tape is.

Missing-finger tosses the wire into the pool, but before the wire reaches the water, Black shuts off the power. Black drags Ha-ram out of the water from where she nearly drowned, then fights off all of Missing-finger’s men.

He and Missing-finger fight each other, but Black manages to stab Missing-finger, knocking him into the pool. Missing-finger demands to know who Black is. Black: “I’m 444—which you’ll find out soon enough.”

Black tosses the live wires into the pool, electrocuting Missing-finger. Black’s next mission is Choi Geun-ho, who he shoots point-blank in the head. Black: “May you rot in hell.”

Later, Black swan dives off the cliff, hoping that Ha-ram will be happy once her memories of him are erased.

Ha-ram’s recovering at the hospital—as are the other detectives, who were saved by Black, although they don’t know how that could be possible since they’re convinced he’s in America. Hahaha, the detectives are all impressed that Ha-ram is healing so much faster than they are.

Ha-ram’s mother brings her a letter from Black postmarked from America. Black writes that his brain surgery went well to remove the bullet, and once he recovers, he plans to travel the world. Ha-ram’s happy that he’s doing well and studies the photo of post-operation Black with his doctor.

Moo-gang’s mother is so guilt-stricken about what she did to Joon that she leaves a suicide note explaining everything. Then she overdoses on sleeping pills.

It turns out that Moo-gang’s mother actually didn’t need to use Joon’s heart to save Moo-gang. Just as she had finished removing Joon’s heart, she got a call that a girl who’d been in an accident and was brain dead was a perfect match for Moo-gang, and thus the heart transplant could happen right away.

Thanks to her suicide note, the detectives now know the truth about what happened to Joon, and they retrieve the body from the sea. The autopsy reveals that Joon was shot, and Ha-ram overhears them talking about it.

She realizes in a daze that she had to have been the one who shot Joon. Leo watches her in concern, remembering that Black said Loser could live in Leo’s body for as long as he wanted, provided he protected Ha-ram from finding out the truth of how Joon died. Leo worries about what he should do, since she’ll also find out that Black didn’t go to America.

Ha-ram demands the detectives check Black’s flight records, and they confirm that Black never left the country and never got surgery to remove the bullet from his brain. They did find footage of someone jumping off the cliff where they found Joon’s body, and they realize that it must be Black.

Everyone is shocked, but none more so than Ha-ram.

In the Underworld, Black stands trial before the Death Squad. Since Black killed a human (well, more than one human), his punishment is to perish. But when Black was on his way to his trial, Joseon informed him Ha-ram found out the truth of Joon’s death. Black asked Joseon to do him a favor.

Meanwhile, Ha-ram stands at the edge of the cliff. She asks to be reborn as a simple, ordinary person.

At his trial, Black asks the Death Squad to give him the maximum punishment, which isn’t for him to perish. Thanks to the old woman Reaper, Black knows the maximum sentence is actually that he ceases to exist. By removing himself from the world, Black can make sure Ha-ram has a happy life since she’ll have never met—or shot—Joon.

Thanks to Joseon’s overwrought testimony about Black’s misdeeds, the Death Squad agrees to the maximum sentence, declaring him to have never existed. As Black receives his punishment, Ha-ram jumps off the cliff.

Thanks to Black ceasing to exist, he was able to prevent Ha-ram’s parent’s car accident, which means she was born a normal child and not half-human, half-Reaper. She then grew up to have a normal life, becoming a fire fighter and saving many people’s lives—including the lives of the victims we already know, such as Seung-chul’s parents, Tiffany and Hyo-jin, and the little boy with the sugar sensitivity.

Many years later, an elderly Leo reads a bed-time story about a Reaper who fell in love with a human. He reads it to Ha-ram’s grandchildren (which are not his grandchildren—Leo just remained Ha-ram’s friend all her life), and Ha-ram says that it’s a sad ending because the Reaper erased all the memories of the woman he loved.

But Leo says it’s actually a happy ending, since the Reaper erased memories of him so that the woman he loved could have a happy life. Leo gives her what he calls a Halloween present, and Ha-ram opens it up to reveal the red string bracelet she had once made for Joon.

Memories seem to return as Ha-ram stares at the bracelet. In the morning, she peacefully passes away. Ha-ram’s soul leaves her body and finds Black waiting for her. Ha-ram apologizes for forgetting him, but Black is just happy to know that she had a long and happy life. She puts the red string bracelet on him and together they walk hand-in-hand to the afterlife.

COMMENTS

Sigh. I was onboard with everything up until the last ten minutes. It’s not just the laughably terrible high school drama makeup they did to make twentysomethings Go Ara and Kim Jae-young look older. It’s the infuriating fact that causing Joon to suddenly cease to exist somehow makes it feel like all these hours we’ve spent invested in his life (or at least his missing Reaper soul) are now somehow invalidated. Hitting the big “reset” button makes sense up to a point—I can’t blame him for sacrificing himself to give Ha-ram a happier life, and consider that a noble act. But it’s cruel to realize that so much of the horrible things that happened were solved by removing the existence of an innocent child. What an awful burden to place on Joon’s shoulders when he had already gone through so much.

The logistics of Joon’s disappearance also make no sense to me. For example, I don’t understand how Joon’s disappearance means Ha-ram’s parents never got into an accident and therefore her father was never possessed by a Reaper. I could try to excuse it as the mysteries of the Underworld, but when we’ve been given so many intricate details over the past couple of months, it’s disappointing to suddenly make leaps of faith that seemingly go against everything we’ve learned so far. Joon no longer exists, but apparently Black does, but why does he get to use Moo-gang’s face—because I assume Moo-gang is still real—when Reapers aren’t allowed to use actual human faces that are not their own? Oh, wait, I know—because it would be weird for him to show up at the end looking like the thirteen-year-old Joon after Ha-ram realizes that he was the one she loved. It also explains why her spirit is the young Ha-ram and not the old Ha-ram. Not that I’m complaining about this Titanic-like ending where the old lady, who’s lived a long and happy life, is reunited with her true love after death. I can sense the romance in that, but trying to understand how it actually works is driving me almost as crazy as attempting to figure out what the hell kind of Halloween-Christmas holiday old Leo and old Ha-ram were celebrating.

Also, if Leo/Loser can clearly remember that Joon/Black existed because he’s faithfully stayed by Ha-ram’s side all this time, it means that Black didn’t cease to exist for other Reapers (which can explain why he could be Ha-ram’s Reaper, I guess, although you’d think the maximum punishment would also mean being sent to the fiery pits, but whatever, show). Yet, if Joon ceased to exist for all humans, does that mean there’s no Mujin hellmouth? Did Joon’s butterfly affect also stop the mall from collapsing? Prevent Clara from using teen girls in a prostitution ring? Prevent Seon-young’s parents from dying in their car crash so she never became an orphan determined to become a doctor? Is Kwang-kyun still alive and having his own happily-ever-after with Clara? Were Chairman Oh, Congressman Kim, and Byung-shik prevented from entering their unholy trinity and killing so many people? Did Moo-gang become an accountant in America when there was no need for his mother to send him away in the first place? Is Moo-gang’s mother still alive because she wouldn’t have had a reason to commit suicide? Did Royal Group ever come to be? Was Man-soo forced to live with Chairman Oh’s family or did his birth mother keep him? Most importantly, is Sip-gyeong still alive?

These questions may seem like I’m quibbling about finer details, but when we’ve spent hours with a show that’s taken such great pains to prove to us that details are incredibly important, I can’t just suddenly accept a sloppy “happily ever after, the end” finale. I’m not sure if there is even a way to end this show that would be truly satisfying, though. At the very least, I wish it felt like the writer had figured out an ending that felt connected to everything else. I had given this writer the benefit of the doubt, happy to believe the disappointing ending to God’s Gift—14 Days was a fluke. But now when I watch Choi Ran’s future dramas, I’ll probably stop watching before the last ten minutes for fear my enjoyment would be ruined by whatever nonsense comes next.

Overall, though, I’ve genuinely loved this drama. It’s been a thrilling adventure that’s invited me to partake in it as more than just a viewer—piecing together all the hints and clues made me feel like I was also somehow a part of the show, solving the mysteries alongside Black and Ha-ram. If it weren’t for those last ten minutes, I’d be filling this space with a gushing, glowing review. It wasn’t a perfect drama, but it was compelling in a way that felt fresh and different. Untangling all the threads of the first episode has been such a rewarding experience, and dissecting theories and analyzing the clues with everyone has definitely elevated this show from mere TV to a community event. Perhaps I should just forget how Black ended, and instead focus the journey.

According to the production team’s final message:

Black was a story about how human desires and greed influence those around us. We hope it was a chance to reflect on people around us. Black was based on events that won’t be forgotten. We hope that it gave strength to the victims of those events and their families. Thank you again for watching.

Hi there! I just finished the drama and read (almost) all your comments. I really am deeply frustrated at the ending.
I feel betrayed, like most of us I guess.

I don't know if there will ever be a season 2 but I'd like to offer my alternative version (which could even be adaptable if there was indeed a season 2):

So, Ha Ram really falls and kills herself.

She becomes a grim reaper since she killed herself. But she arrives just in time for the trial of Black. Since her existence caused it all, and since she is the product of a grim reaper who failed to follow the rules (and hence, the heroine existence and consequences of it are the result of a fait in the Death World System), she succeed to convince the jury of the Underworld that Black (and her) actions are butterfly effects of her father.
(By the way, I assume that the "cease to exist" part means that souls that end up that way are just reborn as new humans, but without memories etc.)

So, the 10min ending that we see are more of a "what if" dreamed by Black just before ceasing to exist. But since Ha Ram dies at the same moment, and then arrives before the trail ends, the last 10min didn't really happened.

So, Ha Ram convinces the jury to pardon Black and herself and they indeed go to paradise together.

OR
alternative ending of the alternative ending:
the "grandma ha ram" part is still a wishful thinking of Black just before being sentenced to oblivion (which doesn't affects grim reapers, as the show seems to indicate). Ha Ram arrives as a grim reaper at the moment he is sent to "no-existence limbs". Ha Ram would spend something like 2 or 3 episodes trying to save him from it. (and we would by the way have a glimpse of what and who are beyond the grim reapers. There MUST be something that rules the grim reapers, if not, who would have made the rules?!). So, here, it seems logical and quite in adéquation with what the last episode shows. It's not thaaaat great of a happy ending because both Black and Ha Ram die, but it seems to me more satisfying that what we saw, and it allows me (and maybe you) to not discard the last episode or 10min entirely either. What do you think?

Or, alternative version of alternative version's alternative version:
Ha Ram jumps, but is not killed by the fall, just damaged severely. (anyway her being alive or dead and a grim reaper doesn't really matters I think)

Meanwhile, the jury do try to erase Balck's existence as he wished. But then, surprise, it doesn't work: someone still remember him whatever they do: Ha Ram. Love and her grim reaper part in her prevent the jury to fully proceed to the deletion of Black (and it makes sens, doesn't it? and this kind of things often happens in drama and manga and manwa...).

So the jury is puzzled and research how and why that could happen. They discovered ha ram existence and decide to :
either send both of them to paradise
or, preferably,
send them back to human life and overlook the whole mess.

This last ending present the benefice of letting time for explanation about ha ram father: that way, facing the jury, she can come to understand who her father was, and who Black was.

And it still is coherent with the ending we saw. Right?

I was a little distraught at the last 10ish minutes. I understood that Joon was asking to be given the worst punishment (which ISN'T being disintegrated, it's being subjected to stay in the underworld FOREVER, never having the option to work off his karmic sin so he can go to heaven - our underworld system kind of works like a prison. If you end up as a "grim reaper", you are working off your karmic sin and when you do that at last, you're able to go to heaven/be reborn, kind of like community service.)

Which God accepted and gave him as his sentence. So when Joon goes to collect Ha-Ram, it's REALLY bittersweet because he's leading her to go to heaven - but Joon is stuck for eternity being a grim reaper and only relishing what memories he was able to create with Ha-Ram. She'll be reborn, and he'll still be in the underworld, forever working.

When I first started watching Black I know that I shouldn't expect a really happy ending or a happy ending at all but I expected growth. In the first episode Ha-Ram tried to kill herself and in the ending, she jumped off the cliff. I know she's in pain but I expected that after all that happened she will try to remain strong. I would have loved it if instead of erasing Ha-Ram's memories she just lost her ability. I just don't like it that it looks like they're trying really hard to protect Ha-Ram from pain and they succeeded because the moment her memories came back well, she's back with Black. Also, I was kind of hoping to see the real Black even for at least 3 seconds with Ha-Ram I mean she's in love with Black and not Moo-Gang. Right?
Everything is my opinion but nevertheless, I never regretted watching it.

I NEED to get this off my chest because I was (and still am) EXTREMELY disappointed with the ridiculous way the series ended.

Others might have said that it was Leo who saved Ha Ram's parents from the car accident, but Grim Reapers being able to time travel was NEVER mentioned in the series. They can only TELEPORT, which is different from time traveling. It would also expose Leo/Loser being a runaway Reaper to the previous 444, and he'd be in worse trouble for that since old 444 was much cold-hearted than 444/Joon.

Also, from what I understand, the maximum sentence was never having existed in the first place. If Joon never existed, there wouldn't be anything for Ha Ram to remember when she got old. AT ALL. No Joon to be murdered and become 444, no 444 to tell Leo/Loser to watch over Ha Ram, no Joon for Ha Ram to make the bracelet for, and definitely no 444 to greet Ha Ram when she died. It means HE NEVER WAS, so NO ONE would ever remember him since he was never there in the first place. So yeah, that kind of punishment is definitely worse than dissipation, since dissipation acknowledges that the soul had existed.

In addition, just because someone never existed, doesn't mean his non-existence will affect EVERYTHING in Moojin. The effects of 444's sentence should have only affected the situations and scenarios he had influence and control over. It will not make everything alright. And considering 444 had contributed to the downfall of the corrupt people behind the teenage prostitution scandal, his erasure had only ensured that the baddies will keep at their misdeeds because he wasn't there to stop them.

Another thing, there's a plot hole on the nature of Grim Reapers: if they were all humans who died through suicide or were missing, then who Reaped the first humans who died of natural causes or were killed but properly buried? There wouldn't be any Grim Reapers during those times, then. The initial explanation of once-human Reapers and those of "pure descent" makes more sense, since the "pure" ones had a supernatural origin and were then there to collect the first humans.

Lastly, I agree that not revealing Ha Ram's half-Reaper nature and "Moo Gang's" real identity was a wasted subplot.

Truly disappointing. Black could have ended better.

Also, I thought this around episodes 4-8, but I'm so crushed that the world-building was so intricate & detailed & likable for me. I was thinking that it would be tough to watch episode 18 & it be final, to put all my thoughts about the characters/world on a shelf, so to speak.

But it's even more-so with all those bombs about Joon's death, seeing it all happen, seeing his ghost cry watching his step-mom push the car with his body inside off the cliff, watching him see his actual birth mother & cry with her about his "brother." I mean, how do I stomach the reason he literally had his heart cut out of him while he was alive, only for him to have his existence erased? How do I stomach the circumstances of that poor kid's death at all?

Also, I know it would've been a tough pill to swallow/HaRam wouldn't have believed him right away, but I feel like SHE WOULDN'T HAVE KILLED HERSELF IF HE HAD JUST STAYED WITH HER & EXPLAINED HE'S JOON INSIDE MOO-GANG'S BODY. Yes, she led to Joon's death BUT HE DIDN'T DIE FROM A GUNSHOT WOUND, and despite everything he ended they found each other again. Joon's ghost became cold-hearted on the other side but she drew out the human in him & fell in love with him. It was his heart that was inside Moo-Gang the whole time, if she can accept seeing shadows of grim reapers & accept that she fell in love with "Moo-Gang," I think this show with long-ass episodes could've taken the time to show her process that information & feel better because of it. WHAT WAS THE POINT OF INCLUDING THE "THE RED IS FOR FATE" "I... AM JOON" PARTS FOR LITERALLY NO PAYOFF BESIDES A BULLSHIT ENDING THAT CREATES MORE QUESTIONS THAN ANSWERS?

Ugh, I feel like I'm not going to sleep after this. I guess, reading the production team's notes, that was the intent. But nothing got closure and I'm stuck thinking about Joon's ghost crying on the cliff. Tfw in like episode 4's recap, you mentioned not wanting to see more kids get killed.

(Tfw my first comment didn't post?)

Ugh, I didn't like this ending at all. It's not like I felt a happy ending was necessary, but it was frustrating to watch the writer(s) make it more and more impossible to have a happy ending. Instead of a structured story that started from an outline, it felt like the writer kept adding ideas on & didn't know when to stop. The congressman gets to go free? The rape victim & the woman who took care of her don't get to have a nice life in America? Several characters resort to killing themselves, most notably HaRam who starts the series like that & had just attempted to blind herself and episode before that? Great, I'm glad I invested my time for this to just be a display of humanity's ugliness with no development or positive payoff for the characters without a reset button.

All of sudden we get a reset, no actual catharsis for plot-points previously set up, and viewers who end up mad they wasted time watching ~1.5 hour episodes for a cop-out ending on the level of "it was all a dream."

I still have questions!!! Maybe these were revealed and I missed it.
1. Who buried Clara?
2. Why did Moo-gang take the ashes that were in his jar and poor them into Seung-Chul Park’s?
3. How did Mujin Time Mart collapse? Was it caused by and explosions or poor construction work?
4. Was Seung-chul’s body ever found? I would think so since he and Hyun-soon died next to each other.

Just some guesses here:
1) Probably the killer, though he doesn't strike me as the kind of guy that is careful about concealing evidence.
2) I was confused about this too. Either we missed it or they forgot to include it in the story, but the mom probably borrowed some Seung-Chul Park's body. See this post from dramanoona who makes the same guess: https://forums.soompi.com/topic/403960-drama-2017-black-%EB%B8%94%EB%9E%99/page/44/
3. Probably poor construction
4. See 2

Haram's ability disappeared because joon stopped haram's parents from having a car accident. As you see it all started because of the previous 444 who was assigned to take haram's father's soul. The grim reaper forgot the rule to never have an eye contact with a human who's inlove. He got an eye contact with haram's mother and fell in love with her that's why he decided to use haram's father's body and live as a human. That's why haram can foresee death because she's the daughter of a human and a grim reaper. Haram and Joon only met because joon saved her from those kids who bullied her for her ability. Since there is no car accident that happened, haram's father didn't die and there is no grim reaper who took over his father's body so haram was born as a normal child and she wasn't bullied and there was no kim joon because in this revised life he didn't exist anymore.

AND about those who asks what happened to oh man soo, yoon soo wan/ kim soon young, joon's mother, the detectives and the others, SINCE JOON DIDN'T EXISTED IN THE FIRST PLACE, IT MEANS THEY DIDN'T MET AT ALL.

REMEMBER the episode when the plane crashed? Oh Man Soo and Haram only met because mansoo happened to be in the same police station (i don't remember for what reason) and he heard that haram can foresee death and started consulting her because he's worried of his dog sip gyeon. And in this new life of haram where she didn't have the ability anymore, she wasn't sent to that police station for being accused of being a terrorist and killing all those people in the plane.

Since joon didn't existed after he got punished, it means ALL those people haram met, are living their lives differently.. A life wherein they NEVER knew kim joon. Do you know the BUTTERFLY EFFECT? It is a theory wherein a single or even a little action can change everything. And joon not existing, is that butterfly effect. Everything changed because he never existed.

There are photos in the frames where haram is with the other characters right? They seem to be the people she saved since she's a fire fighter. SHE SAVED THEM BECAUSE IT'S HER JOB NOT BECAUSE SHE FORESEE DEATH. SHE DIDN'T INTERFERE WITH THEIR LIVES LIKE WHAT SHE DID BEFORE. IT WAS DIFFERENT THIS TIME. SHE MET THEM BY FATE.

About haram remembering everything and meeting joon in the end, do you remember this line that have been said twice in this drama? – "Your heart will recognize the person you're going to be with before anyone else does." As soon as the old haram saw the bracelet she made for joon, she cried. She might not remember who Joon is but her heart remember the feelings.

I guess Joon existed in the end to pick up haram's soul even though he was punished to never exist in the world and will be erased from their memories is because as long as there is someone who believes in his existence, he will still be there. Not in the world, not in their memories, but he will stay as a grim reaper...

I just watched the whole drama in two days and I can't explain how disappointed I am. Not a single ounce of sense in Joon never existing and it making everything okay, not a single ounce of sense in the bracelet still existing, him showing up at the end, him looking like Moogang, at the very least it should have been 13 yr old Joon and a younger Haram, that way they both are wearing their own faces.

I LOVED this drama up until that end, honestly I'm just going to pretend the drama ended when Joon jumped into the water.

Hey guys, just wanted to remind you all that Leo died and was possessed by a reaper, who Black let stay in the body. The reason Leo still remembers and was able to intervene, was because he never left the body of Leo. He was never caught by the hunters.

Okay, I know I'm kinda super late to comment now, But i just finished watching this and like you guys, I am so so much frustrated with the ending. Actually, I have noticed several plot holes and illogical things throughout the series, but since it's a very complex story, I tend to just tolerate it. But now..... very disappointed.

Anyway, I think about it a lot, and I come up with alternate ending that might be useful for future directors or anyone who's gonna make a remake it later on.

ALTERNATE ENDING #1

1. I guess we should have stopped about the Congressman Kim’s case in ep.16. By extending it with more mafia-like guys as Choi Geun Ho, is exaggerating and a bit dragging. Especially, when we don’t really being introduced to this character from the whole series (or I may miss it, IDK). For ep.17, we can just focus on Black, trying to figure out Joon’s death, and knowing his true identity. It may ends with Joon knowing his identity, and being in a dilemma whether to tell Ha Ram,or even end with Ha ram somehow know the fact that he is a grim reaper, eng ing eng, what a cliffhanger!
2. In episode 18 (finale), we can focus on the relationship between Ha Ram and Black. May be we can see them loving each other, but try to distance each other. Since Ha Ram feels so guilty for killing Joon, and feels like she’s a monster for being half-half. Whereas Joon is in deep frustration after realizing the truth about his death, of how Ha Ram is the one who actually shot him. But later, the couple is forced to meet together (may be because Ha Ram does something like trying to kill herself or anything, that makes Black rushes back to her). Black is very angry, as he knows the consequences of suicide, is becoming a gream reaper (and he doesn’t want that to happen to Ha Ram). Black realize that he loves her no matter what. Furthermore, #007 & #416 mention that it’s because of Ha Ram that he could inhabit Moo Gang’s body and live as human afterall (as Ha Ram saves the supposed-to-be victim in that 9pm mall) and it is Ha Ram who bring back his memories (as because of her, he started to investigate all the cases), and also Joon should have still alive even if Ha Ram shot him, as Moo Gang’s mother is the one who “killed” him. Then when Ha Ram wakes up, Black pleaded her to stay safe, and that’s the only way she can apologize to him.
3. Epilogue. We see the daily life of Black chasing bad guys, as he’s now a real full-time cop (perhaps a captain already). He goes home, and Ha Ram is waiting for him ,preparing dinner. They live together as married couple, but decided not to have kids (to prevent further grim reaper-human chaos). Joseon reaper visits them and ranting about his new partner. A very warm ending :3
4. If we want to go a bit further, we can see Ha Ram dies peacefully as an old lady (as she wishes), and Black calmly accepts her death as they have lived such a great, happy life. And only then, he ask someone to retrieve his body, so he can go...

i just watched this show, and i know its a bit late but i actually liked it a lot. i have even made my peace with the fact that almost 80 percent of the times, my favorite K Dramas end in a very dissatisfying way (moon lovers, Gu family book, reunited worlds, ....).
i just have one little disappointment which may seem quite weird because its about Man-soo. strange as it may sound, he was my favorite character in this drama and i was really rooting for him and Ha-ram. specially after that ending, I thought: well, if they weren't going to let black and Ha-ram be together, they could have at least make sure that Man-soo and Ha-ram be together and then after her death, she would be with black anyway, right? wouldn't that be the best of both worlds?

I just finished watching the show and although I’m completely not satisfied with the ending, it made sense in some way and this is how I interpreted it.

1. Leo saved Haram’s parents and she’s a normal girl - I can’t explain how.

2. Leo told Haram about the Grim Reaper’s love story, which is basically the whole show that we’ve been watching, i.e. about a girl who can see shadows and how the Grim Reaper sacrificed himself for her.

3. When Haram saw the bracelet, she remembered everything and filled in the blank from what Leo told her. She now realized she is the girl in Leo’s story, which means now she knew she was half human half Grim Reaper and that Moogang was Joon and 444 all along and why he had to leave her. This way, our frustration over how Haram wouldn’t know about Grim Reapers in the ending would be solved.

4. When Haram stepped out of her body and saw 444, he was not there as her Grim Reaper. Remember that Grim Reapers have to collect souls in pair? I prefer to think that in a way, her remembering 444 brought his soul back to existence in the Underworld, and he’s waiting there to go with her to the afterlife. So his punishment (being “erased”) probably only worked in Haram’s lifeline, but since she still managed to remember him, that brought his soul back - and it will be in whatever form Haram remembered him, the Grim Reaper 444 in Moogang’s body. Since he’s now out of punishment, he’s free to join Haram in the afterlife. In a way, Haram saved him. We’ve seen how strong 444’s love for Haram is, the ending also showed how strong Haram’s love for 444 by remembering him.

I know my interpretation may not satisfy all, but that’s how I’m trying to come to terms with the ending. I’m still mourning over the ending of the show. No more SSH in black suits for me.

Very well said! I share the same sentiments with you, me and my husband spent entire weekend to finish this korean drama and like you we were dumbfounded and flabbergasted about the turn of events. yet the last minutes of it made me realize how inconsistent and made me feel that we wasted our time watching it, we need details and conclusive factors about the characters, I just hope that the writer finished it in a manner of intricacy on how the first few episode are. it made me sadder than sad that a good drama was literally gives us a close to poop ending(sorry for the word) Nevertheless like u i enjoyed the whole ride except for the last part, I also wish that I have the amnesia to forget the last part tho' haha

I hated the ending !
At the end Joon´s heart belongs to this shitty doctor, even so ha-ram was a perfect match and did a lot for him.
Well, the crime story and the twist were really great but the love story sucks at the end. Many said that Joon gives up many things for Ha-ram because he loves here...but if he would loves here, he would has stayed by her side. After he found out what Ha-ram did he could barly even looked at here face. Also it would have been great to see how Ha-ram would have react to find out that he is a Reaper. Cause I don´t think that she would be scared like her mother, I mean hello she can see the death and her father was a Reaper as well.
The teleport of Leo in the Time makes no sense, that Ha-ram didn´t saw a shadow in Leo all the time make no sense, that it seeems that Leo has his memorie all the time makes no sense (he knows who his dad was, he know what happend when they were young, and even if someone would say he just knows it from the video....how could he knows that it was there and knows what the bunny on his bag means)
Also that time when Joon shouted himselfe in his had and didn´t die makes no sense .
I even can´t understand that Joon is so angry at Ha-ram and thinks she had killed him, because honestly the bullet would have not killed him when he arrived the hospital ( it was a graze)! It was his freaking mother who opend him up. Honestly even if he didn´t have been injured she would have taken his heart anyway. I am so angry and sad that Joon didn´t love Ha-ram
because I would have loved a lovestory for them ....or that he wouldn´t erased her memorie so she can be happy with Man-soo who really loves her !

I just watched this drama recently.
I loved this drama but I totally agree that the ending was a let-down. And there were still plot holes I didn’t get such as;

1.Is it just me or did anyone else also wonder why Ha Ram didn’t see a shadow inside Leo if Loser was in him the whole time?
(Cause he didn’t always wear black so she should’ve seen it)

2. And also what happened to the souls of the real creepy Doc & Leo? (Are they roaming around since no one “reaped” them?)

3. Why did Black have to kill Chen & Choi Geun Ho instead of just knocking them unconscious or catching them for them to serve their time in jail. Revealing the truth to the world would seem more satisfying. (Also so he wouldn’t have to be punished for harming humans and could live happily with Ha Ram)

4. The prevention of Ha Ram’s parents’ accident didn’t make sense. Even if it was Leo who prevented it. At the actual time of the accident then Leo would be the real Leo (not Loser). And plus if you say it was Loser, well he can teleport but not time travel so it still wouldn’t make sense.

5. Joon’s non-existence wouldn’t prevent the prostitution ring and Mujin Time Mart collapse. He wasn’t the one that cause those incidents, he only found the tape about the prostitution. So did the incidents still happen or what?

5. Why was Black’s suicide on the cliff caught on CCTV? (This isn’t a big deal but still I think it was a bit sloppy and forced. Let’s say it was caught on the dash cam in his car- saying he drove to the cliff which I’m actually not sure cause I didn’t see it in the background- but still if Black really didn’t want Ha Ram to find out, he should’ve thought about that & been more careful)

6. When Sun Young met Byeong Tae, they knew the dangers and the importance of their meeting. Yet they didn’t close the door and had to talk in the doorway for Chen to eavesdrop and threaten them. (This is actually not a big deal but I just feel scenes like this are also just a bit too forced, and other dramas always have these kind of scenes that just frustrate me)

I agree the ending was sloppy, at least Black & Ha Ram got a happy ending. But still, the solution to reset everything kinda made the struggles and justice served throughout the 18 episodes all in vain. I had high expectations for the ending so I was disappointed.
I don’t know if I’m thinking too logically, but I just feel like every drama will always have those “sloppy/forced scenes/plots. I hope there will be a drama series, at least one, that is able to deliver all the qualities and messages it desires to without having to add those forced scenes/plots.

I am a full year late but it's ok xD
So I really realllyyyyy loved this kdrama so much & easily the one I enjoyed the most out of everything I have seen so far & the ending just managed to RUIN it all. How does such a well developed intricate plot just implode on itself like that in the last 10 minutes?

Anyway, I already mentioned it in a reply, but I to comment again to give my view of how the end could have been waaaay better

So how to have made the ending better?
- Omit the last tape, it was a pointless addition since I didn't even remember that Chen guy. He is irrelevant
- Joon/Black should NOT have met HaRam that night & called her eyes obnoxious & caused all that drama. Instead, he should have given that video to his team & it should have been released.
- HaRam would want to kill herself/stab her eyes out after realizing she killed Joon. Her mum could have convinced Black to stop her. Black will save HaRam & she would just have to learn to accept everything that happened & probably eventually Black could have explained who he is etc cos I really needed that scene to happen.
- That Kim yeon suk or whatever his name is could have been released as per the original.
- Joon & HaRam take out the time capsule together, realize the tape is there but middle finger was following them, so there can be this one final epic chase/fight scene with middle finger & Black
- Black either kills him (sad ending) or stops him (happier ending) & they release the tape

VOILA !! everything is perfectly solved g d i

Then they can show how Joon's Mom & Sun Young are happy in the US, Oh ManSoo is successful, the detectives are doing well, Black/Joon & HaRam are happy together etc etc. Smol details to show us viewers how the lives of the characters we have followed for 20 freaking hours are going on. They don't even need to bother telling us what will happen in the soul world afterwards, nobody cares. We know the 100yr reaper survived so it doesn't even matter...

Here to clear all your questions !
Why did Black ceasing to exist, helps ha rams parent from having the accident and father taken over by the reaper?
Technically, it is not because joon ceased to exist. but it is because he resetted the whole thing. Ha Rams father already had the second highest penalty, which his soul is erased . even if the world resets, his soul wont be coming back, right? otherwise, the writer wont even bother showing Ha rams father got the penalties for killing a human..

Why did Leo stay by Ha Rams side till the end?
kinda confused me but .. just like Ha Ram, she felt like something was missing in her life, although the world has been reset, some people may still have their feelings from the previous world and their promises. Ha ram cries when she saw the bracelets.. Maybe leo also felt the same when he look at Ha Ram. maybe, it was the loser, not Leo.. coz leo was still meant to die of drugs usage anyway, so loser took control over Leos body and kept his promise to black, maybe he wrote the story after all? as if he remembers everything from the previous world, thats why he gave her the bracelets. why would leo give ha ram a bracelet that says J <3 H .

the prostitute incident never happened , which means, no killer . remember. SunYoung parents died and joons mother took care of sunyoung. What if joon never existed and Joons mother didnt work with Clara to make a living to support her child for school.. she would not have taken her into her care.. BUT . even if joons mother took care of sunyoung, the drugs incident will never happen, which means joons mother wont be going to jail, plus, sunyoung wont be given to Clara. Clara wasnt selling underage girls. She was forced to by oh man ho or wtf his name is, that old guy who wants the girl badly for prostituion, so he forced clara to do it, or else clara’s lover will die. Prostitution never happened, Killer never contracted . end of story

I just finished watching the drama. And I couldn’t agree with you more! The story was so interesting and intense. The journey watching the drama was so satisfying EXCEPT the end. I really did feel I had wasted my time after that utterly disappointing ending. All that hardship they go through comes to nothing and the child molesters end up going free if one is to follow their logic. It ended up being meaningless in the end. So glad I read your blog and saw that I’m not the only one with these thoughts.

Overall great drama that I loved to watch, it was sooo exciting, scary and amazing❤️❤️ And I’m just gonna ignore the last minutes and make up my own ending.

So Black never got caught by the Death club thingy and be secretly lived as Moo Gang for the rest of his life together with Ha Ram and when the time came they both died together and went to heaven and yes I am also gonna say that the Death Club thingy pardoned his crimes cause they also thought that he and Ha Ram should be given a happy ending😂❤️❤️

There you go 😂❤️❤️ Happily ever after

I could not agree more with your review. I love the Korean tv shows but I often feel the writers suffer from depression. So many tragic sad endings . I loved "Black" up to the end. I wanted Black to spend his life with Ha ram. So disappointed. I watched "Possessed " right before "Black" and the first half was great and the second half they killed off all of the good guys. Very different from American TV where the good guys usually triumph in the end. I will keep searching for more Korean TV shows in Hope's of finding more uplifting endings.

I think I get it now. Remeber, black let that gream reaper called loser to live in Leo's body only after one condition that he must look after haram. I got so confused at the end so I went back and repeated the video then I came to the conclusion that the voice saying ' I protected haram's parent from accident.' Acutally it was Leo's voice. Let's clear one thing that Leo is acutally dead. That loser has possessed his body so it doesn't matter how old he is cause he is already dead. I think that gream reaper called loser(inside Leo's body) waited for haram to reborn and stopped all those misfortunes. And he gave her that braclet at the last which brought her past life's memory back.

Most important thing: black(joon) didn't exist in human world but he did exist in underworld. So when she died he came to take her soul hinting that they are finally together.😊

If you listen, the condemned reaper was 420. That would be the brother, not Joon. I am confused on how it would cause HaRam to be a normal human also. It didn't look like either brother caused the accident. The ending left more questions than answers.

Know I’m late to commenting on this series, but I just found this site. I really loved this series, but yes the ending was rushed and did not correlate to the series direction.

Unfortunately from the comments it sounds like the original direction was changed. Though I’m sure it would have even been a depressing ending.

At the time when I initially watched it I did not realize/or couldn’t remember it was Leo at the end. Or I thought she married Man-soo and had a happy life for some reason or what I wanted to believe. Probably one of the few who though if she couldn’t be with Black in life at least Man-soo. With Joon not existing the new timeline does not make sense. Ha-ram was a stronger person near the end of the series. I don’t believe she would have killed herself, but since they had her on the cliff I would have gone with a different ending.

Also I did find another persons take on the ending. Some of it sounds interesting and could have been what the director was trying to convey, but it did not for me. You cannot expect people to gather that much detailed information in 10-15 minutes or a couple of minutes depending on the scene when none of it was explained. https://www.kcrush.com/unpopular-opinion-hated-blacks-ending-well-youre-wrong/

This would have been my take since I did feel there was a connection between Ha-rim and Man-soo even though she had strong feeling for Black not knowing it was not Moo-Gang. It would have been nice if it played out differently starting at the time Ha-ram finding out she shot Joon and Black is in the underworld. Black being on trial for committing a grave sin and supposed to perish he would agree to not be reincarnated. Black request to help remove Ha-rims cursed vision plus a last farewell since now she knows about his death. Ha-rams distraught and walking towards the cliff at before dusk. She stands there and takes a step forward, but hesitates since she hears her name. Black grabs her hand pulls her around to hug her. He pats her head and says he says everything is ok, but explains who he is and he cannot be with her because it is against nature while opening his black jacket showing his shadow (wearing a white shirt underneath). Taken aback Ha-ram is still crying she has some flashbacks of odd instances where it did not seem right and is not afraid as she of Black like she previously was of other black shadows. Black announces he truly loves her and wishes for her happiness. Ha-ram is crying and hugs him. Black raises her head while leans over and to kiss her forehead. He then says “Die hard, never die!” with a smile on his face trying not to cry. She hesitatly smiles through her tears while night falls behind then Black disappears. She falls to her knees and sobs. Man-soo appears and holds Ha-ram and she grabs onto him and sobs while Leo walks up from behind. Air shot view they are walking her back to a car. Leo narrates that Black asked for Man-soo and him to pick up Ha-rim since he would...

Am I the only one mad about Kim sun Young's ending? After all, that woman suffered instead of letting her go peacefully to Chicago. They had her killed by that piece of crap Chen off-screen and don't even show that efforts paid off.

Just finished binjing this drama. This ending is worse than Game of thrones. How can something so detailed and complex end like this.

This is my theory

If Joon didnt exist his mom wont end up in jail and Sun young wont end up with Clara and maybe Clara wouldnt start the prostitution ring which will stop the insurance company from insuring the mall which will stop the mall from being opened and causing all these deaths. Mall company cant blackmail insurance company and the Kim wont be able to raoe Sung and make videotapes so no tapes meaning not hiring the scarred guy to kill Clara. Wish they would explained it this way.

I dont get how Harams parents survived and cant even make something up to explain it.

Just read through 50 comments to be shocked no one mentioned the Halloween + Christmas decorations in the finale? Also, what is a Halloween present and how do I get one? :)
