Black: Episode 18 (Final)

The end is finally here, and it’s time to see how our characters deal with the consequences of their actions from twenty years ago. Will all the details come together to make sense of everything that has happened so far, or will we end up banging our heads against the wall, as confused as we were when this adventure first began?

FINAL EPISODE RECAP

Ha-ram’s father followed Scarface during his investigation of the arson case and he saw Joon’s yellow smoke flare, realizing Joon was in danger. Ha-ram’s father found Joon in the glass factory, but before Joon could tell Ha-ram’s father what was wrong, Joon was shot.

Ha-ram’s father was shocked to realize that it was Ha-ram who shot Joon, and as he checked on his daughter who knocked herself out from the recoil, Joon staggered out of the factory.

Black struggles with the realization that it was Ha-ram who shot him, wondering if this is why his head hurt so much when he first met Ha-ram. As Black broods on the cliffside, Hip-hop worries that Black wasn’t able to find the tape and that the Death Squad will be coming for Black any minute now.

Hip-hop urges Black to take Leo’s laptop to the police and show them Leo’s confession that Moo-gang’s mother actually killed Joon, so then the police can find Joon’s body and Black can return to his true form. But Black doesn’t want Ha-ram to find out the truth—that she shot Joon, thinking he was her father’s Shadow.

Ha-ram visits Black at his home, worried about him since last she saw him he was dealing with an agonizing headache. Remembering Ha-ram’s confession that she likes him just because it’s him, as well as her mother’s warning for him to stay far away from her, Black orders Ha-ram to get lost. Grumbling about her ability to see Shadows, he kicks her out of his house, much to her bewilderment.

Ha-ram’s mother finds her sitting dazed and depressed at home. Ha-ram blankly says that Mom should have just killed her back then, since she’s such a monster. Realizing that Black must have said something to her, Mom tries to comfort Ha-ram.

Ha-ram’s mother confronts Black, fiercely standing up for her suffering daughter. Black points out that he had to be cruel to Ha-ram so she would leave him alone. Besides, Black plans to disappear just as Ha-ram’s mother wishes, so Mom should be happy.

But her accusations ring in his ears as he drives away to give the police Leo’s laptop. He determinedly tells himself that he doesn’t care, then sighs as he suddenly turns the car around.

Ha-ram wakes up to finds some food left out for her by her concerned mother. Ha-ram can’t stop thinking about the way Black kicked her out, calling her eyes obnoxious. She cries to herself as she says that he’s the obnoxious one, but she slowly reaches for a chopstick and aims it at her eye.

Black bursts into her place, preventing her from stabbing out her eyes. Ha-ram pleads with him to let her go, but he patiently holds onto her as she weeps, gently forcing her to let go of the chopstick.

Ha-ram’s mother overhears all this and suddenly apologizes to Black as he leaves Ha-ram’s place. Mom realizes that Ha-ram is struggling but that Black is only person who can help her. Mom pleads with Black to stay by Ha-ram’s side, protecting her for the rest of her life.

Hip-hop worries that if Black doesn’t submit the laptop as evidence soon, the police won’t be able to find Joon’s body before the Death Squad arrive to drag Black away, which will result in Black’s memories as Joon being erased.

Black wants the truth of what happened to Joon to be revealed, though. He painfully realizes that if Joon hadn’t died like that, Black could still be living a happy, human life.

Black ultimately decides to destroy the laptop, determined to stay in Moo-gang’s body and live as a human, declaring that it’s his second chance at life. That way Ha-ram also won’t find out the truth about Joon’s death and her role in it. But Joseon points out that Black being stuck in Moo-gang’s body isn’t for another chance at life, but a chance to reveal how he died.

Black brings Ha-ram to see a doctor who tells her that the bullet in Black’s brain may cause him to act irrationally at times due to the nerves it’s pressing against, but it doesn’t mean Black can’t have a long and normal life.

Black uses the “bullet pressing against nerves” to explain that he doesn’t remember how he treated her last night and only heard about it from her mother (which, as we know, is a lie). He apologizes for his actions, and reassures Ha-ram that he treasures her eyes.

He plans to get surgery from a world-renowned brain surgeon in America. Ha-ram says she’ll go with him, and Black quickly says that he’ll be going his his mother (well, Moo-gang’s mother), and that he’ll be leaving soon. Then he hugs Ha-ram close.

Black meets up with Soo-wan, remembering the first time that Joon saw Seon-young and the way his young adolescent heart fluttered. Black now realizes that the reason Moo-gang’s heart always felt strange when he was with Soo-wan was because it was Joon’s heart, fluttering for his first love.

Soo-wan has changed her mind about moving to America. Instead, she plans to have an interview with the press. She’ll tell them what happened with Congressman Kim back then, which will force the prosecution to investigate the case again.

Black urges Soo-wan to stick with her plan to move to America, promising that he’ll take care of Congressman Kim. But first he has a favor to ask of her.

Black takes Soo-wan to Joon’s mother, and both women cry tears of joy to be reunited since they were like mother and daughter. Joon’s mother apologizes for sending Soo-wan to live with Clara, blaming herself for what happened back then. Soo-wan says if Joon’s mother is truly sorry, then she can make it up to her by moving to America with Soo-wan.

Black goes to the columbarium and pours the ashes from Joon’s urn into the nearly empty urn of Seung-chul (since when there’s only a hand to bury, there aren’t many ashes). As he sets Seung-chul’s urn next to the urns of Seung-chul’s parents, Black apologizes that it’s taken so long for Seung-chul to finally be returned to his proper place.

Leo panics when he sees that his laptop is missing, but is more shocked when he turns around to find Black pointing a gun at him. Black insists that Loser is in Leo’s body, and if Loser doesn’t come out on the count of three, Black will shoot Leo and drag Loser out anyway.

At first Leo looks confused, but then suddenly he collapses as Loser leaps out of Leo’s body. Loser profusely apologizes and begs forgiveness, wondering how Black figured it out. Black says that it was from the laptop’s recording—Leo clearly died from an overdose, but when the shower stall door opened on its own and then Leo suddenly got up again, it was obvious a Reaper possessed him.

Black is annoyed that Loser has been messing with him all this time, but Loser argues that it’s all Black’s fault for sending him on an assignment by himself in the first place. He knew Black wanted him to mess up so Black could get a new partner.

But when Loser realized that Leo the soul he was going to reap, he decided to get his revenge for all the ills Leo caused him by borrowing Leo’s glamorous life for a while, even it meant being sent to the fiery pits once the Death Squad caught him.

Right after Loser possessed Leo’s body, he heard voices elsewhere in the hotel suite and hid himself. He saw Creepy Doc and Moo-gang’s mother arguing about stopping Moo-gang from investigating Joon’s death. Creepy Doc got so agitated that his Reaper tattoo glowed.

That’s when Loser discovered Creepy Doc was possessed by a Reaper, and since then they worked together. Black points out that Creepy Doc was possessed by the old woman who’s never been caught by the Death Squad, and that she actually tried to kill Leo so that Loser’s memory would be wiped.

Loser demands to speak to the old woman, but Black says that he’s already taken care of her.

Moo-gang’s mother hurries to Creepy Doc’s home, desperate to warn him that Black has found out the truth of Joon’s death. But Creepy Doc is dead.

Loser is shocked that Black killed Creepy Doc so that the old woman would be returned to the Death Squad, going back on his promise of helping her after she told him where to find Leo’s laptop.

Loser pleads with Black to let him stay in Leo’s body just a little longer, at least until Leo’s drama is finished filming, since Loser has always wanted to be an actor. Black says that Loser can live as a human for however long he wants—under one condition.

Man-soo inherits the entirety of Royal Group—the coerced contract Man-ho forced him to sign now considered null and void. Man-soo’s first act as the CEO of Royal Group is to halt all construction of the new mall, dedicating that space for a memorial to the people who died in the Mujin mall collapse. He then plans to break up the Royal Group conglomerate, relinquishing his role of CEO.

Joseon doesn’t trust Black to be able to live as a human without seeking vengeance on the people who ruined Joon’s life. But Black is determined to forget everything and stay by Ha-ram’s side, protecting her from any more harm.

Congressman Kim’s approval rating tanks and he’s ordered to resign from his position. He calls Leo, asking to meet at their old house in Mujin. Leo tries calling Black, but doesn’t get an answer.

Ha-ram hurries to the airport to say goodbye to Black before he leaves for America. Black hugs her tightly as she asks him to call her once he lands, and then they go their separate ways.

But instead of heading to a flight, Black watches as Ha-ram leaves the airport. Man-soo arrives just then, wanting also to say goodbye to Black, but Ha-ram says he’s too late. Man-soo happily hands her a life insurance contract, reminding her she promised to be his first client.

He also tells her about his plans for the Mujin memorial, and Ha-ram realizes that the time capsule is on the site. She hurries to Mujin to dig it up before the construction crew finds it.

Black waits at the airport for Soo-wan and Joon’s mother to arrive, since they’re the ones actually going to America. Soo-wan promises to take care of joon’s mother like she was her own, and then hopes Black will live happily-ever-after with Ha-ram. Now that Soo-wan and his mother are taken care of, Black focuses on his final mission.

Soo-wan and Joon’s mother make their way to airport security as Missing-finger watches. Oh, hey, I forgot about him! He reports to someone, letting them know that Seon-young is leaving the country, so it’s all taken care of.

Except when Soo-wan puts Joon’s mother’s purse into her suitcase, she sees a SIM card stuck in Moo-gang’s sweatshirt that Soo-wan was taking with her to America. Soo-wan realizes that this must be important, and sends Joon’s mother home while Soo-wan tries to reach Black.

Missing-finger is surprised and annoyed to see Soo-wan leave the airport. Soo-wan sticks the SIM card in her phone—it has Byung-tae’s burner phone number. Byung-tae answers, relieved that Moo-gang must have regained his memory.

But Soo-wan tells him that she needs to meet with him so they can figure out how to prosecute Congressman Kim.

Congressman Kim meets with Leo at their old Mujin house. He attributes Leo’s awkwardness to the way Congressman Kim beat up his son twenty years ago when he demanded to know where the tape went (but Leo’s awkwardness is actually attributed to Loser not being sure of what’s going on).

Soo-wan visits Byung-tae, desperate to know where the tape is so she can give it to the police and tell them everything. But Byung-tae says that he doesn’t have it—Ha-ram does. That information shocks Soo-wan—but not as much as suddenly getting a knife pressed against her neck, courtesy of Missing-finger.

Ha-ram digs up the time capsule and opens it, surprised to find a video tape inside. But then she remembers the day she discovered Joon leaving a video message for Seon-young. When he wasn’t looking, Ha-ram snuck inside and stole the tape from his backpack, her jealousy wanting her to prevent Seon-young from ever seeing it.

Ha-ram decides that at least she’ll be able to see Joon’s face again, so she starts to watch the video—only it’s the tape of Seon-young being raped by Congressman Kim. Horrified, Ha-ram quickly switches off the TV. She realizes that there are actually two tapes in the capsule. She grabs the other tape and puts it in the VCR.

Black goes to Congressman Kim’s office. Black doesn’t care if it means he’ll perish as a Reaper, he’s prepared to kill the congressman. But he’s too late—Congressman Kim has already hanged himself. Black doesn’t believe it’s suicide, and speculates that Man-ho was the one who ordered the hit.

Leo finds Black and tells him about meeting Congressman Kim that morning, who told him about the tape that Leo had apparently given away twenty years ago.

Black’s fractured memories start to return and he recalls young Leo accidentally running into him with his bike, causing Joon to be mildly injured. Leo took him to his house to get some first aid.

Joon saw a video camera and asked to borrow it so he could make sure his birthday tape for Seon-young recorded properly—only to discover the tape was missing from his bag (courtesy of Ha-ram).

Leo offered to let him use one of his father’s tapes to record a new birthday message, but when Joon tested the video to make sure it was blank, he saw it was the recording of Seon-young being raped.

When Joon was running from Scarface, he realized he was near where he and Ha-ram buried their time capsule. So he quickly hid the tape in there. Black goes to the spot where the time capsule was buried, shocked to see that the capsule has already been dug up.

Black deduces that Ha-ram was the one who took it, then worries that this must be why Ha-ram will die.

Ha-ram calls Chief Bong to let them know she has the tape, but as she leaves to bring the tape to them, Missing-finger and his men are ready to grab her. She tries to run and hide, but she’s no match for Missing-finger. Chief Bong and the detectives arrive to save her, but Missing-finger’s men overpower them.

Black speeds back to Seoul and finds Man-soo at his new insurance company. Black asks Man-soo to use his hacking skills to track down someone named Choi Geun-ho.

Choi Geun-ho, now a high-ranking government official, was originally the mayor of Mujin. Congressman Kim, back when he was a PD, blackmailed Choi Geun-ho for catching him having sex with Seon-young at a mountain cabin at the time the Mujin mall collapsed. In order to protect his political career, Choi Geun-ho was forced to support Congressman Kim.

Choi Geun-ho is also the person Missing-finger works for, so it’s on his behalf that Missing-finger sets Ha-ram up in an empty pool, her hands and feet bound to a metal chair. Chief Bong and the other detectives are also tied up and Missing-finger threatens to beat them to death if Ha-ram doesn’t tell him where she hid the video tape.

Ha-ram’s furious that Choi Geun-ho and Congressman Kim have covered up their crimes in such a brutal manner over the past twenty years, and refuses to tell them where she hid the tape. That is until she sees the Shadows next to the detectives as Missing-finger’s men beat them up. The detectives are dragged away, and Chief Bong shouts that they’d rather die than hide the truth, so Ha-ram shouldn’t tell Missing-finger anything.

Realizing that Ha-ram won’t tell him about the htape, Missing-finger starts to fill the swimming pool with water and then shows her two live wires. Since she’s in a metal chair, she’ll be immediately electrocuted once he drops the wire the water. Ha-ram still refuses to tell him where the tape is.

Missing-finger tosses the wire into the pool, but before the wire reaches the water, Black shuts off the power. Black drags Ha-ram out of the water from where she nearly drowned, then fights off all of Missing-finger’s men.

He and Missing-finger fight each other, but Black manages to stab Missing-finger, knocking him into the pool. Missing-finger demands to know who Black is. Black: “I’m 444—which you’ll find out soon enough.”

Black tosses the live wires into the pool, electrocuting Missing-finger. Black’s next mission is Choi Geun-ho, who he shoots point-blank in the head. Black: “May you rot in hell.”

Later, Black swan dives off the cliff, hoping that Ha-ram will be happy once her memories of him are erased.

Ha-ram’s recovering at the hospital—as are the other detectives, who were saved by Black, although they don’t know how that could be possible since they’re convinced he’s in America. Hahaha, the detectives are all impressed that Ha-ram is healing so much faster than they are.

Ha-ram’s mother brings her a letter from Black postmarked from America. Black writes that his brain surgery went well to remove the bullet, and once he recovers, he plans to travel the world. Ha-ram’s happy that he’s doing well and studies the photo of post-operation Black with his doctor.

Moo-gang’s mother is so guilt-stricken about what she did to Joon that she leaves a suicide note explaining everything. Then she overdoses on sleeping pills.

It turns out that Moo-gang’s mother actually didn’t need to use Joon’s heart to save Moo-gang. Just as she had finished removing Joon’s heart, she got a call that a girl who’d been in an accident and was brain dead was a perfect match for Moo-gang, and thus the heart transplant could happen right away.

Thanks to her suicide note, the detectives now know the truth about what happened to Joon, and they retrieve the body from the sea. The autopsy reveals that Joon was shot, and Ha-ram overhears them talking about it.

She realizes in a daze that she had to have been the one who shot Joon. Leo watches her in concern, remembering that Black said Loser could live in Leo’s body for as long as he wanted, provided he protected Ha-ram from finding out the truth of how Joon died. Leo worries about what he should do, since she’ll also find out that Black didn’t go to America.

Ha-ram demands the detectives check Black’s flight records, and they confirm that Black never left the country and never got surgery to remove the bullet from his brain. They did find footage of someone jumping off the cliff where they found Joon’s body, and they realize that it must be Black.

Everyone is shocked, but none more so than Ha-ram.

In the Underworld, Black stands trial before the Death Squad. Since Black killed a human (well, more than one human), his punishment is to perish. But when Black was on his way to his trial, Joseon informed him Ha-ram found out the truth of Joon’s death. Black asked Joseon to do him a favor.

Meanwhile, Ha-ram stands at the edge of the cliff. She asks to be reborn as a simple, ordinary person.

At his trial, Black asks the Death Squad to give him the maximum punishment, which isn’t for him to perish. Thanks to the old woman Reaper, Black knows the maximum sentence is actually that he ceases to exist. By removing himself from the world, Black can make sure Ha-ram has a happy life since she’ll have never met—or shot—Joon.

Thanks to Joseon’s overwrought testimony about Black’s misdeeds, the Death Squad agrees to the maximum sentence, declaring him to have never existed. As Black receives his punishment, Ha-ram jumps off the cliff.

Thanks to Black ceasing to exist, he was able to prevent Ha-ram’s parent’s car accident, which means she was born a normal child and not half-human, half-Reaper. She then grew up to have a normal life, becoming a fire fighter and saving many people’s lives—including the lives of the victims we already know, such as Seung-chul’s parents, Tiffany and Hyo-jin, and the little boy with the sugar sensitivity.

Many years later, an elderly Leo reads a bed-time story about a Reaper who fell in love with a human. He reads it to Ha-ram’s grandchildren (which are not his grandchildren—Leo just remained Ha-ram’s friend all her life), and Ha-ram says that it’s a sad ending because the Reaper erased all the memories of the woman he loved.

But Leo says it’s actually a happy ending, since the Reaper erased memories of him so that the woman he loved could have a happy life. Leo gives her what he calls a Halloween present, and Ha-ram opens it up to reveal the red string bracelet she had once made for Joon.

Memories seem to return as Ha-ram stares at the bracelet. In the morning, she peacefully passes away. Ha-ram’s soul leaves her body and finds Black waiting for her. Ha-ram apologizes for forgetting him, but Black is just happy to know that she had a long and happy life. She puts the red string bracelet on him and together they walk hand-in-hand to the afterlife.

COMMENTS

Sigh. I was onboard with everything up until the last ten minutes. It’s not just the laughably terrible high school drama makeup they did to make twentysomethings Go Ara and Kim Jae-young look older. It’s the infuriating fact that causing Joon to suddenly cease to exist somehow makes it feel like all these hours we’ve spent invested in his life (or at least his missing Reaper soul) are now somehow invalidated. Hitting the big “reset” button makes sense up to a point—I can’t blame him for sacrificing himself to give Ha-ram a happier life, and consider that a noble act. But it’s cruel to realize that so much of the horrible things that happened were solved by removing the existence of an innocent child. What an awful burden to place on Joon’s shoulders when he had already gone through so much.

The logistics of Joon’s disappearance also make no sense to me. For example, I don’t understand how Joon’s disappearance means Ha-ram’s parents never got into an accident and therefore her father was never possessed by a Reaper. I could try to excuse it as the mysteries of the Underworld, but when we’ve been given so many intricate details over the past couple of months, it’s disappointing to suddenly make leaps of faith that seemingly go against everything we’ve learned so far. Joon no longer exists, but apparently Black does, but why does he get to use Moo-gang’s face—because I assume Moo-gang is still real—when Reapers aren’t allowed to use actual human faces that are not their own? Oh, wait, I know—because it would be weird for him to show up at the end looking like the thirteen-year-old Joon after Ha-ram realizes that he was the one she loved. It also explains why her spirit is the young Ha-ram and not the old Ha-ram. Not that I’m complaining about this Titanic-like ending where the old lady, who’s lived a long and happy life, is reunited with her true love after death. I can sense the romance in that, but trying to understand how it actually works is driving me almost as crazy as attempting to figure out what the hell kind of Halloween-Christmas holiday old Leo and old Ha-ram were celebrating.

Also, if Leo/Loser can clearly remember that Joon/Black existed because he’s faithfully stayed by Ha-ram’s side all this time, it means that Black didn’t cease to exist for other Reapers (which can explain why he could be Ha-ram’s Reaper, I guess, although you’d think the maximum punishment would also mean being sent to the fiery pits, but whatever, show). Yet, if Joon ceased to exist for all humans, does that mean there’s no Mujin hellmouth? Did Joon’s butterfly affect also stop the mall from collapsing? Prevent Clara from using teen girls in a prostitution ring? Prevent Seon-young’s parents from dying in their car crash so she never became an orphan determined to become a doctor? Is Kwang-kyun still alive and having his own happily-ever-after with Clara? Were Chairman Oh, Congressman Kim, and Byung-shik prevented from entering their unholy trinity and killing so many people? Did Moo-gang become an accountant in America when there was no need for his mother to send him away in the first place? Is Moo-gang’s mother still alive because she wouldn’t have had a reason to commit suicide? Did Royal Group ever come to be? Was Man-soo forced to live with Chairman Oh’s family or did his birth mother keep him? Most importantly, is Sip-gyeong still alive?

These questions may seem like I’m quibbling about finer details, but when we’ve spent hours with a show that’s taken such great pains to prove to us that details are incredibly important, I can’t just suddenly accept a sloppy “happily ever after, the end” finale. I’m not sure if there is even a way to end this show that would be truly satisfying, though. At the very least, I wish it felt like the writer had figured out an ending that felt connected to everything else. I had given this writer the benefit of the doubt, happy to believe the disappointing ending to God’s Gift—14 Days was a fluke. But now when I watch Choi Ran’s future dramas, I’ll probably stop watching before the last ten minutes for fear my enjoyment would be ruined by whatever nonsense comes next.

Overall, though, I’ve genuinely loved this drama. It’s been a thrilling adventure that’s invited me to partake in it as more than just a viewer—piecing together all the hints and clues made me feel like I was also somehow a part of the show, solving the mysteries alongside Black and Ha-ram. If it weren’t for those last ten minutes, I’d be filling this space with a gushing, glowing review. It wasn’t a perfect drama, but it was compelling in a way that felt fresh and different. Untangling all the threads of the first episode has been such a rewarding experience, and dissecting theories and analyzing the clues with everyone has definitely elevated this show from mere TV to a community event. Perhaps I should just forget how Black ended, and instead focus the journey.

According to the production team’s final message:

Black was a story about how human desires and greed influence those around us. We hope it was a chance to reflect on people around us. Black was based on events that won’t be forgotten. We hope that it gave strength to the victims of those events and their families. Thank you again for watching.

I loved the show but honestly there was a lot of plot holes/continuity errors/questions left over, especially after the nonsense ending. The whole rules of the underworld, grim reapers and collecting souls thing was a little confusing. The souls loser/444 were supposed to collect originally were Moogang's and the military guy, but then by the later episode it was Leo's? And with the capsules, the doctor guy (who turned out to be the grim reaper old woman, meaning she'd have no reason to steal the capsules and question why they belong to 444 anyway) had the capsules but one rolled away and some random grim reapers opened it to teach 444 a lesson, but who died as a result of that? Because neither Mansoo or Haram died. And then there was the constant thing about Haram needing to die from the start, but I never really understood why she didn't die when nearly getting hit by a car, since Black didn't actually save her she just- didn't die? I feel like I'm thinking way too much into this but as the show was so detailed and seemed to connect things, it feels like by the end the writer wanted to try connect everything so made coincidences up to suit the storyline with no real explanation. (e.g. with Loser being in Leo, the preceeding episodes Leo was acting as Leo, not just Loser being a really good actor, so it seems like a last min decision to put Loser in his body.)

Some other small errors/questions:
- When Haram saves the child from being murdered by his teacher, she thinks she is successful because she does not see a shadow on him, but it turns out to be the kid's little brother(?) But why would the other kid be wearing Haram's sock? And why would some random other person kill the kid when she clearly saw the teacher killing him in her vision?
- Not one person thought to destroy the tapes/make a copy of them (depending on their intentions) when they got their hands on them?
- When did Haram put the tape(s) in the capsule?
- Why did Moogang's ex look so shifty when Black asked if the tape was edited?

I'm thinking of re-watching all the episodes since I know now everything, to see if I spot anything else wrong or if there are clues to make sense of things.

If I'm not mistaken, Moo Gang's reapers were actually Joseon and Hiphop that is why thyey were also in the mall when Moo Gang was shot.

As for Loser being in Leo's body, I think there had been hints about it in the earlier episodes but nothing really solid. Leo saving the writer would have been out of character for the real Leo. There were subtle shifts in his character.

I think the ex looked shifty because on the edited part she also mentioned also the exmayor of the town being involved in the prostitution ring and not only Man-soo's dad. Though I don't know why they didn't clarified that.

I thought she looked shifty because she knew about the part where Joon recorded over the original tape and somehow was able to delete it.

I am...
those last couple of minutes. Why.
I agree with all your confusion and questions. This drama was so good at bringing everything together, so it's disappointing and just plain weird that there's so much ?????? at the end.

Also, I'm so mad Haram never learned that he is a reaper and that she is a half-reaper. And just. Ugh.

IT WAS SO GOOD AND YET

I know! I wished Haram found out everything about Grim Reapers and stuff. What a disappointment.

I don't want to believe that Black's punishment resulted in a complete reset of everything. It's just waaaay too major of an effect. I just want to believe that his "cease to exist" thing only resulted in everyone's memory of Joon/Black to be erased and not resulting in a complete alternate universe where everything is fine and dandy. I want to believe that their memories have been altered and that Haram remembered living a completely different life and found some other way to deal with her ability. Lemme drown in this fantasy. I can't grasp the real ending.

If only the confusion of the last 10 mins didn't happen. I would've been completely satisfied.

I’m not a huge fan of the ending either, but I guess it is what it is and I will definitely remember the drama series as one that has made a big impact on my K-drama-watching experience. SSH gave a phenomenal performance and I think he has personally carried the whole series on his back through to the end. He WAS Black. It wasn’t just the clothes he wore. Go Ara managed to hit a few good points but had been a little lacking in charisma compared to the male lead. There were times I found it difficult to sympathize with her predicaments or root for her, but then perhaps the material she had to work with had a lot of bearings on her performance.

How I wish the ending could have been done differently though. There had been too much still going on to conclude the drama the way it did, and without the justice it wholly deserves. I think the mistake was the fact that they have already declared in the synopsis the fate that will eventually befall Grim Reaper 444 in the end, where his entire existence as a human will be completely erased, by hook or by crook. If they hadn’t been so conclusive in their synopsis I think there could have been many avenues for this story to continue on in a second season, without having to completely obliterate the beautiful, mysterious and exciting journey that has had us viewers so emotionally invested. All the debates, theories and speculations ended up being of no consequence in the end – because they simply ceased to have taken place by the means of simply pushing a reset button. It kind of made a mockery of the reason we loved the drama series in the first place. It made redundant too, of all the wonderful relationship and friendship that Black had built during his short, borrowed time in Detective Han’s body, the contributions of his amazing detective skills in solving crimes and bringing the bad guys to justice, and his willingness to change his stubborn worldview of the creatures he used to call “lowly human.”

Keeping Black’s reaper identity a secret from Ha Ram had been made into such a big issue. We have all wondered how Ha Ram would have reacted upon finding it out. Would she have taken her mother’s attitude and ban him from her life? Or could she have been a bigger person and accepted him for what he was? Would the revelation have given her the chance to come to terms with her abilities and see the shadows in a wholly different light, now that she knows what they truly are? To have been haunted by the shadows and not having any explanation as to why she had those abilities, was also an avenue the producers could have explored, in letting her coming to understand that she had been a part of the shadowy beings as the legacy of her beloved late father. It’s such a wasted opportunity that the revelation had been squeezed in in the last 5 minutes of the final episode, and by means of a bedtime story, no less! Both Han Moo Gang and Kim Joon had told Ha Ram that her gifts were special. Yet the producers saw fit...

(continued)... yet the producers saw fit to take it all away on the reset button; insinuating that the gift had in fact, only been a curse all along. And to have made this all merely about Ha Ram’s happiness in the end, felt like daylight robbery to many of us, I’m sure. They could have at least shown how “the rules of heavens” isn’t so rigid that they would even punish the soul of a human who died at 13 years of age through no faults of his own.

I’m not even going to address the inconsistencies in the final episode and the plot holes it was riddled with, beginning with Little Ha Ram “accidentally” shooting her beloved Joonie. The plot started going downhill fast after that. I guess it just had to have happened as a byproduct of the mad rush to squeeze everything into the final episode. They've had so much avenues that they could have pursued further should a sequel come into existence in the future. A potential bromance that Black could have developed with Disgusting Brat a.k.a “Leo”, in evading the Death Squad, for instance! Ha ha. But just imagine this being a sequel and they encounter a new villain in the form of an over-ambitious member of the Death Squad who would bend the rules of heaven and earth in his pursuit of runaway reapers like Black and Disgusting Brat. But I digress. Just wishful thinking on my part, I guess. I just don’t want my Black experience to end. I’m sure many would feel the same way too. It had been too wonderful a journey to have had it cut off as abruptly as it did. Left a huge hollow after near 17 episodes of substance.

Sorry for whinging. Thanks for having the patience in reading all the way through!

Anyone has the same thoughts as me? If i'm not wrong, there are a total of 4 tapes in the story, and everyone is looking for a different tape

1. Audition tape - Seon Young / Soo Wan unbutton. Should be filmed by Clara, and wants it back so she won't get jailed? The one that was shown to be in Moo Gang's possession before his death.

2. Blackmail tape - Secretly filming Choi Geun Ho (last villian aka ex-Mujin mayor) pulling Seon Young to have sex at the cabin, by Kim Young Seok. This is the tape Choi Geun Ho and Missing Finger is looking for. Also the tape that young Leo gave Joon at the ending (and kept in time capsule)

3. Testimony tape - Kim Young Seok filmed Seon Young to testify the underage prostitution. This is the one that is put into the safe deposit box by Oh Chun Soo (so he will not be caught)

4. Accidental tape - Kim Young Seok caught raping Seon Young. Which he is looking for this tape instead. This is the one that Joon initially filmed his bday message, and got "stolen" by young Haram and kept in Time Capsule.

And I believe that while everyone did not expect that the tape they are scouting for are different from each other?

Lastly, I'm not sure if it is a plot hole, since Loser/Disgusting Brat (in the subs I have from TVN asia)/Chae Soo Dong had possessed Leo's body in Ep1's timeline, shouldn't Ha-ram be able to see that black soul in Ep6? Since Leo did not dress up in black color (White if i recall)

I believe there are 5 tapes. The Happy Birthday tape, the audition tape, the rape tape, the interview tape, and the mayor tape.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TAPE
The tape Joon used to record his happy birthday message to Soo Wan/Seo Young. Stolen by Ha-Ram and buried in the time capsule.

AUDITION TAPE
The one that Moo Gang had in possession in his basement before it was raided by middle-finger guy was the audition tape, which was confirmed when Soo Wan told middle-finger guy to check Moo Gang’s basement, and he got mad at her saying that it’s not the tape he was looking for. The tape only had her taking her clothes off.

RAPE TAPE
The accidental recording of the raping of Soo Wan/Seo Young and Congressman Kim. Has a TV show thing written on it, and was in Leo’s house. Joon thought it was a blank, but when he watched it, he stole it and left Leo’s house. Buried in the time capsule.

MAYOR TAPE
The mayor tape was kind of inconsistent, TBH. That came out of nowhere, and I think it’s a plot hole. Two tapes were in the time capsule: Happy Birthday and the rape tape. Ha-Ram has said once that she buried the tape there during the episode, and we see Joon putting the rape tape in there when he was chased. The fact that Ha-Ram ended up having two rape tapes meant that it’s probably on the Happy Birthday on that Joon recorded on.

Clara was probably looking for either the mayor tape or the rape tape, so that she can protect Detective Na. It wasn’t prison she was afraid of. The tape they were actually hung up about was most likely the rape tape, as the middle-finger guy is revealed to be working under the mayor. But what happened was that since Congressman Kim also had a scandal, that was the focus. Kinda like with Woo Byung-Sik being a big deal, because they all that scandals. But I think the actual tape they were looking for was the mayor one. It’s just that, Soo Wan was taken advantage by all of those old men

Thanks for sticking it out and recapping to the bitter end, odilettante! I don't know if DramaBeans gives the equivalent of combat pay for recapping extra-long episodes full of plot twists, but you deserve it, and then some. Thanks for unfailingly delivering thoughtful, detailed articles week after week. And thanks to the Beanies whose comments and insights made for such stimulating reading and discussion.

The ending was such an aggravating cop-out that I've held off commenting until after binge-watching HAPPY HOME, which was surprisingly addictive. After busting my brain trying to follow the twists and turns of this plot, I feel royally ripped off by the sweetness and light ending that made no sense whatsoever, and can only imagine how Writer-nim feels to have had her creation mangled with a Disney-esque finale. Personally, I think the Tooth Fairy had a hand in that ending. Or was it the Easter Bunny?

The high point of the show for me was Song Seung-heon's fantastic performance. He was in his element in the dual roles of #444 and Mu-gang, which have seemingly caused Dr. Jin to cease to exist in my memory. ;-)

I'd also like to commend the strong performances of the supporting cast, in particular the homicide detectives Mu-gang worked with. And thanks to the crew and staff who obviously busted their butts turning out a truly thrilling and unpredictable drama week after week. It's not their fault that the story went sideways.

Rather than rehash the infuriating logic gaps in the plot, I'll address the bizarre mash-up of Halloween and Christmas.

The timing of Ha-ram's demise is cosmically significant as Halloween (All Hallow's [Saints'] Eve) is actually New Year's Eve in the old Celtic calendar. Samhain (meaning "Summer's End," and pronounced "sow-en" [as in female pig]) signals the end of harvest and is a festival of the Dead. It falls mid-way between the autumnal equinox and the winter solstice. At Samhain, the Irish believe(d) that the veil between the worlds is thinner and more easily traversed by the sídhe (spirits, fairy folk; pronounced "shee"). Samhain is the turning point from Light to Dark in the course of the year. Beltane (May Day, and Lei Day!) is the turning point from Dark to Light. Black (or whoever the heck he is) returns to Ha-ram to escort her into the light at the onset of winter and the dark, a time of spiritual reflection and remembrance of the blessed dead who have gone before. This ties in nicely with the final message from the staff commemorating the victims of real-life tragedies caused by human greed.

To spare what's left of my grey matter, I'll just pretend the whole danged show was actually a dream in the fevered brain of a drama writer in TEMPERATURE OF LOVE or BECAUSE THIS LIFE IS OUR FIRST. ;-)

erm... I am not sure if I've missed something but if Loser has been in Leo's body for so long why hasn't Haram noticed? She should've seen the 'magic display of light' on his gut/chest.

It was mentioned that in the original script, Leo had a black panther tattoo covering his torso, which would have camouflaged the black shadow. But the scene wasn't filmed. Ergo, another plot hole.

I must have missed something with the "magic display of light."

Or could be because Ha-Ram can't see her own death. Hence, he won't be able to see both 444 and Loser's shadow.

I don't know if other beanies has mentioned this before, but I've been tempted to change the title from 'Black' to 'Black/TAPEs'. Coz seriously, 85% of the drama is alll about the tapes. lol.

What I would have wanted was a scene to show the fiery pits of hell with all the evil characters. It'll give me the satisfaction after sacrificing 18+ hours of watching this drama... I thought my questions are answered but I'm left with more questions.

Very happy with the somewhat tragic end of 444 and Ha Ram. Not so happy with the execution of 444... that's just too easy. At some point in this episode and #17, I got annoyed with Ha Ram's suicidal ways... girl, unless you have a freaking black belt or something, then go ahead be a hero.

(Did anyone else sigh disappointments at our handsome serial killer's death by pool & electric shock? I needed it to be more grotesque and dramatic. I mean, hello... he kills people with great skills and imagination!)

I'm getting super obsessed here. I read that the writer put up her original scripts on her blog, but I searched high and low and still can't find her blog. Can somebody find that blog post and share the scripts please! I hate this ending and if the writer has released an original script, we need to read it. This is like being left hanging over a cliff.

I've read somewhere in here or in the last recap comments that there's an english translation in Black's soompi forum.

I have just binged the show over the weekend and have been so upset by the ending that it's taken me a few days to get over. Some comments on possible resolutions and an alternative ending which could have made everyone happy, for your reading pleasure:

*The Red String of Destiny*
As Black/Joon stands to be judged, he chooses to be forgotten, and the sentence is issued in stone. However, in the midst of it being meted out, the red string bracelet glows and protects Black, because it has tied him indelibly with Ha Ram. The sentence is partially meted out, with everyone forgetting Black - except for Ha Ram. Her life is reset without him (her parents still die, and she is still half-Reaper half-human), and she lives a happy and full life, but she has always been looking for him in the shadows. Only when she passes into death does she see him, waiting as an orphaned and forgotten soul waiting for her all these years. They walk hand-in-hand into Paradise, with her following her Reapers (007 and 419) - she leads him, because he doesn't know where to go.

*The Missing Soul/Old Lady*
So what happened with her? She had a hard life because she was abused by her husband, and then turns murderous shadow, and then...? Suggested resolution would be for 007 to be her husband, whom she killed in self-defence, and burned and scattered his ashes so he could never find his remains.

*Leo/Loser*
He lives to the end of Leo's life and dies and then is sentenced to 100 years of training new Reapers.

*Soo Wan and Byeong Tae*
She didn't go to Chicago and they both got caught by Mssing Finger Assassin, and...? Both died? No happy ending for Joon's mom?

okay.. i havr my own conclusion about this one.. at the ending scene leo is just telling the story right? it didn't mean that the story was true. i just thought of it as what happen in oblin where everything happened its just that goblins existence or memory is erased, so as ha ram.. maybe everything happened but joon or moo gang wasn't there.. and i thought about ha ram jumping off the cliff maybe there was a little rearrange on that maybe since 444 is already punished little details has been arrange.. and on how 444 had been able to fetch ha ram's soul maybe just as what happened in goblin his existence wasn't ceased maybe he was just hidden right? then leo was able to let ha ram remember everthing because not everything is changed, its impossible if ha ram jump off the cliff and leo waited for another ha ram to be born right? AHAHAHA and another thing is who did ha ram marry? i was thinking its man soo... they're cute together so maybe ha ram married man soo YIIEEE

i had another thoughts about it maybe the reason because 444 didn't actually ceased to exist because he is also joon and joon is a big part of ha ram's life that's why he just stay hidden and can't be erased from the world. tada~

i just finished this drama on netflix and after each ep (because they were confusing af i needed help lol) i would read your recaps and i just gotta say THAT FREAKING ENDING WAS SO DISAPPOINTING. i want to pretend that the last 20 minutes didn't happen but i still have so many questions swimming in my brain. like haram's dad (the grim reaper) supposedly got punished by getting disintegrated or whatever right? but how does that explain when we saw her dad as one of the grim reaper's when black was getting a capsule for loser. also i'm still lost on how the sugar kid got killed by his dad??? why?? and wouldn't someone have noticed the kid missing? he was notorious for running around and also the school would've noticed a student not going anymore. and the whole thing about black being joon just put me off tbh, idk why but finding out joon had a crush on soowan i was like are you serious??? i didn't like him then. i did find it annoying haram basically being his stalker and being jealous of soowan but come on soowan had both brothers??? and black ended up falling hard in love with haram but then once he found out he was joon it's like his love turned into obligation to haram and he looked at soowan with love again. i was so mad. that whole last ep was just too extra. like why have a whole new big baddy in the last 40 minutes of a show and adding another freaking tape! a better ending would've been after wrapping up the baddys getting put away and black or joon or whatever finally getting loser's soul and the capturing the old 100 year lady and finally haram's (because she was supposed to die her capsule was opened.) but black gets punished by being a reaper forever and not being his true self (that's why he still looks like moogang) and then haram learns about everything and decides to be a reaper with black/joon as his partner or some reason is a reaper and they can be together forever. there lol also what about joeson?? they should've showed where his body was and what his story was, that would've been nice.

I literally just finished watching this show after binging it on Netflix for the past few days and oh my god WHAT EVEN WAS THAT ENDING??? One, what bothers me is Joon and Moo-Gang's souls are never reunited for a proper goodbye and considering one of the big twists/parallels is that both brothers end up trying to avenge one another's deaths, the fact that they never see each other again is highly disappointing. Second, I legit thought that when Ha-Ram jumps off the cliff before Joon requests the reality reset that he'd be pulled back up from the underworld to retrieve her soul since he's still been her reaper the entire time. Also this is sort of just quibbling but I would've been interested in finding out how young teenage Joon ended up becoming stern sourpuss No. 444, but idk that's just me.

I also pretty much agree with everyone who's pointed out that erasing Joon's existence doesn't actually prevent all the deaths and the tragedies and abuse/ corruption that happened during his lifetime and after when he took over Moo-Gang's body because correlation =/= causation kthnxbai.

(Also, I kinda interpreted Leo/forgot his real name gifting the red thread bracelet back to Ha-Ram and her remembering the original timeline as what brought Black/Joon back into existence but idk if that's giving the ending too much credit...)

And to be honest, I'm personally pretty annoyed that the whole message in the end was that Ha-Ram's death-sense was a curse and that her life could only be better if she was born "normal". Like...you could have delivered a better message in that she could've learned how to cope better with her ability with her mother and Man-Soo becoming her support system instead of making her constantly want to kill herself every single time. (The overuse of suicidal imagery in this show also kinda bugged me, but that's its own entire issue...)

Honestly, I feel like a lot of this could have been improved if Joon had just spit it out and *insert Genie from Aladdin* TOLD. HER. THE. TRUTH. It's not like she wouldn't have believed him. I know they framed it as him not wanting to cause her more heartbreak, but considering she ended up being heartbroken about it all anyways, it was kinda pointless. And it would've made the reveal about No. 444 being Joon all along more powerful if Ha-Ram had been on the same page...

And just 'cause I'm petty, I'm highly disappointed they didn't even get one last "walk-into-the-afterlife-sunset" kiss in the show's actual ending... (And while I'm still being petty, yeah, y'know what the scene where Joon's destroying the laptop and wanting to live as a normal human and be happy with Ha-Ram like they both deserved is EXACTLY WHAT SHOULD'VE HAPPENED.)

Apologies for the overuse of capslock, I'm just very emotional and overall I thought the show was pretty amazing, plot and performance wise. The reset ending more or less spits on all the character development we saw happen for...

I binge watched this show on Netflix over my holiday break too. Like many, I was obsessed and had really high expectations for the ending too. The performance and story lines are wonderful. But if left me with so many mixed emotions that I couldn't even sleep!!! I agreed with you about the flaws in letting Haram commit suicide at the end, the whole entire series she was a fighter and learning to cope with her "curse". In the end, she just gave up and what's worse is the story portrayed her ability as a curse rather than a blessing. I felt the show didn't deliver her character to a strong female lead, and rather resorted her to being a typical person with a curse who desperately wanting to be "normal", and as a result, committed suicide. Sure, the illogical happy ending was as cliche as it gets, but the overall message for this series could have been more positive and consistent. I wished they had let Haram learn about her hybrid genes where she will learn to embrace her difference and be happy in her own way.

Loved this series, but hated the illogical ending. First of all, how did 444 become 420 at the end? Or was that a translation error?
If Black ceased to exist how could he exist to collect Ha Ram after she died? Why were the old people's makeup and wigs so awful? Why did no one notice in the shot when Ha Ram died her wig was in the wrong position when her head was hanging and you could see her real hair poking out. The end was so rushed and incomplete, we spent the whole series learning such detailed info about the characters to end with that baloney!

A really small change in the ending would make it so much better for me. If the ultimate punishment was for a Grim Reaper to be reborn (because being a human sucks so much) then Ha Ram suicides, becomes a GR at the same time as Joon is going back to reincarnate and he throws her the bracelet. While she's a GR she discovers the whole truth about him and who she is, and also the value of being a GR and helping people pass on peacefully. Joon is reborn and grows up to be a detective (which is his unresolved goal from the past life) and dies on duty, when he departs it's Ha Ram the GR in charge of reaping his life, and as soon as he sees the bracelet he recovers his past life memories and they go together to paradise.

No reset button, no halloween/christmas nonsense, which are my biggest beefs with the ending, I still hate they introduced another tape and another villain so late into the story but just so we don't end up with a really shitty ending, here's another choice.

All the actors did a great job pulling you in emotionally and made you feel for all them. i also love the dog. Wish he was on longer-smile. i have to admit i was still confused about reaper#444 being Joon or Moo Gang or was he both because he received the heart of Joon that was placed in Moo Gang's body? it just gives me a reason to re watch it again. Despite what may be some inconsistencies in the plot, overall a fun watch which i somehow always feel sad when one of the k dramas i watch end.

I found the solution to all questions about all the other people's life. Actually it makes sense. Everything still happened. The only soul who got a reset in life was Ha Ram. Everyone who died before her reset died too after reset, that also include haram's father killed by spider tattoo.

But only one huge problem that can't be solved. If the maximum punishment is to cease to exist, how did Joon ever become the grim reaper? Therefore he should have not be able to save haram's parent car accident. And also isn't it a grim ripper taboo to interfer with human accidents.

If on the contrary let's assume he did became a grim ripper who is not bound to "time and space" since he was able to prevent the bridal car accident. Isn't it dumb again for the underworld to allow him to commit a taboo by preventing the car accident.

This series is awesome! One of the best k-dramas in the recent years. The main actors did a superb job. So in love with SSH and his multiple characters. The journey was a thrill ride that kept the audience interested and curious. However, the ending missed a lot of the main substance and wasn't fitting to the rest of the series. I wish they had changed the ending to be more logical. Overall, I really enjoyed the series and already miss these characters. Looking forward to more of their great future projects. Much love from the USA.

You worded my thoughts perfectly!!!! That ending was tragically written and ruined the otherwise great show for me. I'm still annoyed by it now tbh. It's just disappointing that a show that good with such an amazing plottwist completely erased the whole story and did a tacky flash forward.
I'm not even one who likes happy endings that much but him choosing to stay would've had me content, even if he was hunted down eventually. Like... You're trying to tell me he did that much effort for the evidence not to be found so he could continue to exist only to backtrack the decision 2 seconds later? Sorry for rambling, like I said, I'm still annoyed.

I already commented but forgot to mention some of the continuity errors I saw and was wondering if I was maybe just mistaken but;

1: When 444 is in Han's body he can't physically touch grim reapers yet he's able to grab both his runaway partner and the old lady.
2: Haram can't see shadows when someone wears black yet she saw a shadow on her father when he was wearing black.

Again, I may just be mistaken so please feel free to correct me.

Also, which true events is this based on? It was sad at the end but I can't find info anywhere.

Hi. I Could maybe answer number 2 for you. She can't a shadow INSIDE a person if that person is wearing black. But if it's just a normal shadow (person is about to die), then she can still see it. I remember Mujin's student uniform is black and she saw all of their shadows when they were about to die

Re: your question about the true events this story refers to

This was discussed in the earlier recaps and comments.

The Sewol ferry capsized and sunk on April 16, 2014, killing hundreds of school students. Grim Reaper #416 (Hip Hop) died on that date (along with many others) in the Mujin Time Mart collapse, but his body was not recovered for many years, which is why he initially looked older. He reverted to his appearance at time of death when his remains were found under buried steel beams.

The Mujin Time Mart collapse also referred to the structural failure of the Sampoong Department Store in Seoul on June 29, 1995 that killed 502 people and injured more than 900. It was not built to specifications, and later changes to the original design caused the weakened structure to collapse months after it opened. It was the worst building collapse worldwide until the World Trade Center was felled.

Hah. Thanks to the ending the whole drama and the efforts of the crew have been wasted. :(

Everyone did a great job, it's just the last 10 minutes of the finale episode that destroys the story. Imagine, only 10 minutes compared to almost 20 hours of watching the whole series. i dont want to blame the writer. we never knew what really happened, why the story ended that way.

Anyway, if i were the writer of this series my alternate ending would be:

1. Black will not kill Chen or his boss (who was not formally introduced in the story btw) and would make them suffer for everything they've done

2. Joon/Black stayed with Haram, married her and lived a happy life together

3. Death Squad found him. (several months or a year after their wedding, i suggest, to make it more dramatic)

4. Haram saw shadows (this could be GR # 007 and 416 warning Black that DS will be taking him at any time) beside Black but she could not see how he will die

5. agonized she told Moo Gang about the balck shadows and how she cant forsee his death

6. Haram holding on to Moo Gang crying

7. before Black/Joon was dragged out of his brother's body, he whispered to Ha Ram, "Ha Ram, I love you, I really love you so much"

8. Moo Gang/Joon died beside Haram (I can hear Haram screaming "Andwae! Andwae! Kagima. Jaebal! Kajima!!!")

9. After his burial, Haram saw the time capsule she and Joon used among MG's belongings

10.She opened it and saw a letter and a tape

11. SHe reads the letter which seems to be his farewell letter to her. it seems that he knew that he's going to die soon

The letter reads:

"To the person who i love the most,
Haram

My soul loves you this much that i am willing to do everything for you
I am sorry for hurting you back then
I knew you like me but I liked somebody else, please forgive me
I kept my promise, our promise for each other
Marrying you is the most beautiful and at the same time, the saddest thing that happened in my life
Beautiful because I married the woman i truly love
but it's also sad because everytime you calls his name and not mine, it breaks my heart into pieces
Haram, I'm sorry for leaving you again
I was a fool for not realizing it soon
I should have used all the time I have to love you and to make you happy
you were right. i was wrong
i should have told you but i dont know
what would happen if i do
sorry for being so selfish
and thank you for loving me after all these years
finally i will be able to return to where i came from
and if God would allow me to live another life
i want to be the same guy, the only guy, you first and the last to fall in love with
I still want to be me and love you with all my heart and soul
I will love you and protect you until the end
I love you Kang Haram
Good bye.

-Joon"

Cries, Scream. Haram calling Joon's name.

I love the image. What about in the middle of their wedding Ha-Ram suddenly sees 20 black shadow. Thinking that everyone will die she screams and make a scene (like she usually does) and tell everyone to go outside. She looks at Black and sees that he's just standing there looking at one of the shadows. Ha-Ram is confused that Black can see them too when suddenly he collapses and die.

Hah. Thanks to the ending the whole drama and the efforts of the crew have been wasted. :(

Everyone did a great job, it's just the last 10 minutes of the finale episode that destroys the entire story.

Good bye."

7 years later

Joon is now 7 years old. Joon/Black and Ha Ram's child
Little Joon is watching his father's video
Black is playing guitar while singing his favorite song
And Haram crying while looking above
Whisphering prayers to the love of her life

the end

Joon/Black died in the end, well we all knew that he's already dead but at least, HR learned the truth in the end that MG is Joon and that she fell in love with the same guy
a bittersweet ending is better i guess i have a feeling that the original ending is something like this but the director ruined the story by insisting his own

Sigh. Still an unforgettable drama. SSH is splendid. GAR is quite impresive too.
Story is sad and beautiful, forget aboutt the ending! :D

Dear Lya & future watchers of BLACK:

I was one of the live-watchers who participated in the recap comments throughout the show's run. Many of the questions later viewers have posed have already been discussed in minute detail in the recap threads. Believe me, BLACK was dissected under a microscope and discussed and debated with gusto and affection for 9 weeks. ;-)

Beanies @fay17 and @eva kindly summarized Korean-language information and put it into English for the rest of us:

@fay17 in comment #2 thread
http://www.dramabeans.com/2017/12/black-episode-18-final/#comment-3150822

See her follow-up comment #11: Writer-nim didn't attend the wrap party.

@eva in comment #27 summarizes Writer-nim's original ending in the script she posted online:
http://www.dramabeans.com/2017/12/black-episode-18-final/#comment-3150966

That's about as definitive as it gets. ;-) Even so, the intended ending isn't as good as the preceding 17 episodes.

I concurrently watched MAD DOG, which did have a finale in keeping with the earlier action of that show. It was a bit muted compared to the gangbusters pace of the opening, but it worked, and was faithful to the personalities of the characters.

I'm still glad I watched BLACK. Song Seung-heon's performance was terrific. And it was a blast to see Reaper #007 alternate with Cheetah in MAD DOG every week. ;-)

As with many of the commentors here I felt the ending didn't make sense until I found out that the drama was extended 2 episode from the original 16 to 18.

Kind of ironic the the production team's (quoted from the recap) final message was "Black was a story about how human desires and greed influence those around us". Seems like that's what robbed a otherwise great drama it's solid ending.

I think it would be more acceptable/made sense if it was a young Joon and a young Ha-Ram met afterwards. Since Joon never got to grow old.

But I guess since they can choose how they want to look it makes more for 444 to be Joon.

And one more thing, how is being erased from existence of the human world worse than dissipation? I think ceasing to exist at all is the worse of the two. And the worst punishment would be both. Ceasing to exist and being removed from everyone's memory, human and reaperdom alike.

*makes more sense for 444 to look like Joon since Ha-ram do not have that ability. Being just an ordinary human.

I have the same questions ... curious of how everything happened . What happened to the other characters.
Other than that i also have this things in mind.
1.At first i thought joon was still alive just in a coma. Like other dramas.

2. I was waiting for joon to tell haram who he is.

3. Showing us that kind of ending leaving me with a conclusion that haram's late husband was man soon.

4. Why do haram's grim reaper father ask wang yong chun to kill him?😦

5.Leo that was possessed of a grim reaper. Still exist even though joon did no longer exist to human life and was erase to humans memory. But for leo with grimreaper it wont be erase since his no longer a human.
6.The reason why the soul of haram is still young at the end because in the original plot of her story is to die at that age not the oldself
7.Even though joon didn't exist. Why moo gang character been erase too?
8.The people died before in the previews episode still died in a different way. Even though as you can see at the picture frames haram save those people while working as a fighter. They still die in a different way.
9.Im looking for the old man who also has the same ability as haram.

The ending sucks! The plot and the flow of story was great until Joon/444 became greedy which is really frustrating. I feel like I just wasted mg almost 20 hours watching this drama. I should have just read the recap. In the middle of the drama, I just want Ha-ram dies. She's not thinking and end up harming a lot of people. I won't recommend it to others.

I have been watching this double episode release for the past nine weeks. I have laughed I have cried I have gasped in suspense at the best series I have ever seen. I have grown to really like the characters of Soo-wan and Tiffany and the cops andOh Man-Soo whose dog got brutally killed by his half brother(I kept hoping Ha Ram would end up with him because Black clearly had to go back to the Underworld). Now on 11th of Jan I see the final episode. Not since the ending of Blake's 7 in the eighties have I seen such a crap ending. I wish Han Ram had been about to jump but got saved by Leo/loser got told the truth and then became a firefighter on her own bat. It would be a better ending if Ha Ram had gone run over by a car on the way to the cliff and both her and Black had got reincarnated as bulldogs owned by Oh Man Soo married to Tiffany and the beloved pets of Tiffany's kid!
I wish I could read Korean so I could read the writer's blog I bet her ending was brilliant.

Sorry someone help me clarify some things because I'm confused.
1) Black is and always has been Joon who came back as a reaper that possessed his brother's(Moo-Gang) body?
2) What episode was Mi-Sook, Loser's girlfriend in? Still haven't figured out who or what role she actually played in this series.
3) The two reaper friends of Black....how did the one with bed hair and a chain wearing all present day clothes get turned into a young kid? I watched one episode where he was an adult, then suddenly, he turned into a kid. Can't find where I missed that.

1) yes but he didnt know it until episode 17.
2) i think she never appeared, i dont think she was important at all
3) have you seen all of the episodes? They explain everything around episode 10. Lets go:
There are 2 kinds of reapers: Those who suicide and those who die but no one know where the body is (the last one dont remember anything and think they were born reapers). They can choose a body/face they want because they dont know who they are.
#416 died when the mujin shopping was distroyed but no one knew where the body was. He was a child at the time. When they found out, #416 became who he really was when he was alive. #007 explained it all. BUT he couldnt say a word to black (#444) because he should find out the truth by himself.
Sorry for bad English, its not my native language :) hope i could help!!!

Did anyone else notice that when they delivered the sentence, they did NOT say Prisoner 444... (sah sah sah) but 420?

So... who is Prisoner 420?

This opens up a HUGE can of worms. I mean... we all assumed that since it looked like Black, it must be Black, right? What if the ending only sucked so bad because we missed a crucial plot point?

That it wasn't Black being sentenced.

Remember that Black had gone back on his word to Yi-bbeun Kim (the old lady GR that evaded capture for 100 years?) and relayed that he had "Taken care of her".

So here's my thoughts... What if they were actually sentencing Yi-bbeun Kim, making it so SHE never existed?

She did seem to love possessing handsome male bodies... and theoretically, she could assume that particular visage because both Joon and Mu-gang were dead. It wasn't the face of a LIVING person. He may have turned her in and in doing so, gained absolution for capturing such a nefarious criminal. Maybe she thought stealing his most recent face would fool the Death Squad... only it didn't... and they sentenced her by her real number.

With 100 years on a lamb, she definitely could have caused a lot of issues that lead to the current day, just by existing. Maybe she was driving the other car that caused the accident of Ha-Ram's parents... Her "never existing" very well could have been all that was needed to set things straight.

Of course it may have been a subtitle error -- but I could swear I never heard sah sah sah mentioned during sentencing.

It doesn't make any sense.
They say "prisoner 420" because he died on april 20th. He kept looking like moogang because his soul got attached to moogang's body. To my mind that's why 444 wasn't looking like joon.

I'm sorry but did I miss the part where Ha Ram never saw the shadow inside Leo? They (Ha Ram and Moo Gang) practically tailed Leo hoping to find the one who wants to kill Leo. Im sure Leo wasn't wearing black everytime they're together tho. Lol.

I only recently binge watched Black and I liked it. I prefer this supernatural genre and at least this one had a real plot and substance unlike Goblin which i hated but in the end they tried too much and the ending was ultimately just bad.

I liked the plot of missing souls also becoming reapers but at the same time I wish Black had just been an original reaper and not Joon because the whole romance between Joon/Ha Ram was forced. Joon had a crush on Soo Wan and she seemed fond of him too. Ha Ram had a childish rather possessive crush on Joon which wasn't reciprocated. There was little romantic chemistry between the two characters and actors(even as children) so I never bought the romance and it wasn't the main focus of the show so it made the ending even worse.
Would have liked if Black/Joon's sacrifice was for more than just Ha Ram but his mother, Soo wan all the characters he'd become attached to (not that i liked the reset plot at all but if that was the direction they were going)

Ha Ram's character got progressively worse as the show went on especially after the knife attack with Man Soo. She just wasn't an interesting character after that and lost most of the spark and I really HATED that she never found out who/what she really was ,what wasted potential. Ha Ram should have had the chance to decide for herself.
I wanted to know more about the underworld and that whole mythology and about Ha Ram's father (the first 444 in the car) It seems he had been really coldhearted and good at his job what made him suddenly change who was he as a human etc i was interested in that. and i didn't buy Ha Ram's mother's abandonment, she had lived with the first 444 in the body of her husband for a number of years and never noticed something odd/different about his behavior ? that whole plot could have been explored and better developed.

Two final questions?
Why wasn't Ha Ram as a child able to see the black smoke in her father's body? She lived with him for a long time he couldn't have been wearing black every hour of every day
and why did he even have black smoke following him before his death. He was already dead.

Overall I was engrossed with the story up to the last few episodes but was disappointed in the ending including another unnecessary villain at the end.
My idea of an alternative ending would have been Black doesn't kill anyone his body is recovered and he is taken in by the death squad to be punished, Ha Ram having found out Moo Gang was a reaper rejects him feeling betrayed yet again afraid etc then discovers her origins and that she shot Joon and that he is Black/Joon she commits suicide and Black uses the 100 year escapee/murderer joseon woman as a negotiating tool to avoid dissipation and he ends up partnered with new reaper Ha Ram.

I liked the drama a lot until the last 2 episodes, it felt suddendly very rushed. Also the ‘old’ versions of leo and ha-ram looked very unrealistic which didnt help either. To bad, at the end i have mixed feelings about this drama, it could have been so much better if they gave the ending and the ‘reborned’ ha-ram a bit more depth.

Ugh. Now I feel all broken-hearted. I just started "Black" and wanted to read ahead. Now, I know why people avoid spoilers which I never have before. It could have had a happy ending without much work at all, especially not with all this failure to exist stuff.

Ha-ram goes to kill herself, but Black stops her and confesses. He explains that he's Jun and Mu-gang, and that she didn't kill him, Mu-gang's mother did. He tells her the truth that he's a Grim Reaper, and that she is half-Grim Reaper because her father was a Grim Reaper as well.

Thus, she learns that the three most important men in her life are Grim Reapers: her father, her first love Jun, AND Black. She feels betrayed, and Black decides it's time to go.

Ha-ram's and her mother have a deep conversation about Grim Reapers and why her mother left her father. Ha-ram realizes how stupid she's being by letting go of the love of her life and goes to stop Black. All the good things they did don't get erased.

It doesn't make sense at all lol. I'd just love to think that 444 (maybe Leo, Idk) erased haram's memory and replaced it and all the other people still has their memories except for joon's.
Like Haram has a new reality that's why when leo gave her the bracelet, she remembered everything.

Guys, Ive been thinking the same for the ending.. It is completely nonsense which is really no sense.. But then I remembered that Leo said Ha Ram was reborn and he stop the Ha Ram's parents from the accident which means Ha Ram's cycle of life
was like before but the it give the big impact because Ha Ram couldnt see the shadow anymore and Joon was not exist in the first place.. So it does make sense there when Loser take over Leo's body again and befriend with Ha Ram to protect her.. And the bracelet, maybe Loser keep it with him until he meet Ha Ram again after reborn.. But there also a trick when Ha Ram said she remember Black even after she was reborn.. As for Ha Ram husband, maybe its not Man Soo as he met Ha Ram at the police station because Ha Ram try to stop the plane crashing incident but you know, we never know if their path was cross in some reasons.. That all what I can think and this way, I accept the ending..
