Somehow I feel its not fair to put Goblin here. Even though its end this year but its pretty much last year feeling.

Seems like so many folks in that drama achieved success this year.

NamGoong Min: starred in a thriller miniseries.

Kim Won Hae: He's been in a lot of stuff, but iti seems like after Chief Kim, he's been on a drama streak, continuing with memorable characters.

Kim Sun Ho: continued onto 2nd lead roles in Strongest Deliveryman and Two Cops

Girl who played the undercover FBI: now the female lead in Mysterious Il-seung

Dong Ha: memorable villain in Suspicious Partner and now a second lead in Judge vs. Judge.

Lee Junho: Starring in a leading role in a miniseries this week.

Overall - Forest of Secrets, Radiant Office, Package, Revenge Club, Because this is our 1st.

Thriller - Forest of Secrets

Laughed - actually, Man to Man. Sure the whole thing didn't work but Woon-Gwang, Woon-Gwang and Sul-Woo, and Woon-Gwang and his little statues - just had me in giggles.

Fave Characters - back to Forest of Secrets. No Radiant Office in there, so Ma Yi-Deum for the 3rd.

Villain - Forest of Secrets. I know, there's a theme here, but Yoo Jae-Myung gave one of the standout performances of the year as a beautifully written character. Also, poll above - bit spoilerific?

Bromance - Man to Man/Radiant Office/Goblin

Breakout - Strongest Deliveryman's Kim Sun-Ho.

Underrated - Buamdong, The Package, Radiant Office.

I honestly thought I wouldn't see a better kdrama than Radiant Office this year, so Forest of Secrets was a delightful surprise. Ki-Taek punching out Yong-Jae is probably still my most fun moment of the year though! I thought The Package was lovely. Just as ruminative as Because This, but with more poignancy.

Yoo Jae-mun's character in Forest of Secret is the most memorable in 2017 (and will go down in kdrama history as one of the most memorable). His performance is also among the best this year together with his fellow FoS actors, Jo Seung-Woo and Bae Do-na.

@PYC

You have to go sooooo far down FoS list of actors before you run out of memorable roles.

It's not just that this show had my 2 best characters of the year
- Yoo Jae-mun +
- Bae Doona

It was more than screen time...its what these actors did with it. Eg. Yoon Se-Ah is amazing, powerful and oozes that "just under the surface" energy.

I'm rooting for all of them to do well in their career, especially the younger actors. The veteran actors from Chungmuro are pretty much stable.

-Shin Hye-sun is rocking it in "My Golden Life." Yay for hitting national drama status!
-Looking forward to "Grave Site" 2018 (the 3rd installment of "The Face Reader") with Jo Seung-woo and Yoo Jae-myung.
- I'm watching Lee Geung-young in "Argon." He also has a special appearance with Lee Joon-hyuk in "Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds" Coming out on Dec 20th.
It's hard to miss him in Chungmuro with 10 films in this year alone.
-Looking forward to "Drug King" with Bae Doona, Song Kang-ho and Jo Jung-suk. This is probably her biggest project coming out next year.
Then there is Netflix's "The Kingdom."
I watched Choi Byung-mo in " Warriors of the Dawn" and "The Merciless." I hope he'll have a bigger role in "Negotiation" with Son Ye-jin and Hyun Bin.
Park Jin-woo is underused in dramaland :(.

And to add to your commment: Lee Kyu-hyung is in Wise Prison Life/Prison Playbook, too! Not as big or as meaty of a role as FoS (so far), but I can only hope his star will continue to rise beyond supporting roles.

It's really too bad about Shin Hye-sun's co-star, otherwise I would have watched My Golden Life in a heartbeat lol...

2

I'm waiting to marathon "Prison Life" and I've also heard good things about his character so I'm looking forward to watching him in this drama.
He is another stage actor and a few of his fellow musical actors were also playing supporting roles in "Forest of Secrets" like Choi Jae-Woong who worked with Jo Seung-woo before in the sageuk film "Sword with no Name."

Yes, it's hard to avoid Shin Hye-sun's co-star.
I've glossed through the drama to watch some of her scenes and she is doing great :).

1

Radiant Office is criminally underrated in this poll. It was well-written, well-directed and the characters were so endearing. The little details in the show also make it so entertaining to watch even though there's a lot of office stuff and the romance was not the main plotline. It was not another Misaeng but it was certainly also thoughtful and touching. I guess it doesn't get a lot of votes because it was earlier in the year?

Gosh justice for #ThePackage . That's so underrated. There's also an article how shame this piece being so underrated due to prejudice towards the leads (previous works and idol actor image) but it turn out real good with perfect collaboration between all actors. This drama so different from usual kdrama. No such antagonist character at all. And the male lead vibe so different too. it's nothing like heir of rich comment snobbish rude or overly romantic or such . He just mere commoners but attractive in his own way.

The kiss scene deserved the justice

Best kiss scene happen in 2017 that I feel I need a shower. Both working well savoring and perfectly captured angle. HahAhA

I watched that scene so many times. I agree with you that there were other things that went into making the kiss beautiful beyond two beautiful people kissing passionately with each other. The music was perfect. I loved how some of the shots were framed by the tree leaves and the display of the Japanese clothing, so you get the feeling of being in an intimate space and the reminder of the oppression they were living under in those times. Se-joo had already flashed back earlier to this scene, but this time we were getting the fuller picture. Just so many feleings and layers.

I've been silent lurker for years at this site but registered today to support Black drama.
I know that it was not really popular among beanies because of first episodes (even though i luv first ones as well), so it was important for me to give my votes for it.
I am hoping for it to win the Best Thriller category, FOS & Voice are such strong concurrents.

Anyway, best 3 dramas for me in 2017 were definitely Black, Goblin & amazing Age of Youth 2 ☺

This is my first comment on Dramabeans for months because I have gone off k-drama almost completely. I didn't even bother checking out most of the 2017 crop, the few I did start I almost always dropped and I even let my subscription to DramaFever lapse. But along came Black and I feel myself getting sucked in again. I've started Untouchable, Prison Playbook, and Mysterious Il-seung and I'm excited for the next episodes with each of them. It's been a long time since that has happened.

Black is so good; the writing is superb and it has a wonderful cinematic quality with high production values. I think Song Seung-ho did a great job. I like him as an actor but only in certain parts. He's not believable as a romantic lead to me personally because he doesn't project any warmth on screen. He may be a big old snuggle bunny in real life but in romantic roles he's too cold as an actor. But as a death-personified grim reaper who prides himself on his cold indifference to human pain and suffering, he's perfect.

The one thing I would change is the casting of the leading lady. Go Ara has one expression for me, a sort of "where's the nearest bathroom" look but it's a minor criticism easily overlooked in an otherwise great drama well worth watching again.

Required fields are marked *

Agree on your Song Seung‑heon's not the romantic lead material but fantastic as a grim reaper. I feel no chemistry between him & Go Ara. Felt like there was even more spark between her & Kim Dong-jun instead. Also, Go Ara's acting, so true. Girl looks like she's been denied bathroom breaks. I even find myself looking at Lee El's beautiful natural acting even when Go Ara's saying her lines. Really not favouring Go Ara's 'I speak with a clenched teeth because I'm so mad' when acting out her looking angry roles. It's annoying after the 2nd time

Omg sameee. I don’t usually comment on polls because whatever I want to say, someone probably already did.

But just wanted to second you on Black. That drama was seriously aces. SSH killed it. The writer killed it. The entire ensemble cast killed it. The PD also killed it. I even loved the ending - that’s how fond I am of this drama. It started out so messily and came together so beautifully. I’m really thankful for such gems because it doesn’t come so often.

Nobody on this list owns my heart quite as much as 444.

Black should have been on best character for sure. Also it had more laugh out loud moments than any of the comedies I watched. Short-legged grandpa on the fake tape anyone? I just laughed again thinking about it. Or what about tear-inducing - ep 17 and Black's scene with the real mom? I cried buckets.

I guess it just wasn't popular enough to make these lists, but still, if Goblin can make the period drama list, I'd like to see Black on the lists it did full justice to.

I loved Goblin but it in my opinion it lacked conflict A LOT.
He wanted to die and at the same time he did not, but then we also had 444 whose story was just emotional.
Episodes 7&17 were really tragic but beautifully crafted as they showed us how ugly can people become because of greed.

Black forced me to get involved and interact intellectually if I wanted to enjoy it - the pay-off was huge. I'd compare Black to a jolting alarm clock and Goblin to hitting the snooze button. Both have their benefits to a tired human!

Required fields are marked *

After that garbage ending, Black doesn't deserve any support really. I've never seen a drama with such a disastrous ending. And it's worse because the show was consistently solid and entertaining for 17 episodes, then threw everything out of the window in the final episode with a nonsensical ending which didn't even respect its own story.

And funnily enough, the only other drama that did something similar was this writer's other drama, God's Gift.

Based off my first round of voting I realised the following:
1. Favourite Drama Series: I have a huge bias for romance dramas at the moment.
2. Favourite Action Thriller: I have yet to start
Circle and when I do and finish it, I would have only watched 3 dramas in this drama this category for the year.
3. Most Laughs: K-drama humour rarely ever gets me laughing, at least memorably so.
4. Most Cry-Inducing: The one drama that actually made me cry isn't there--Live Up To Your Name.
5. Favourite Period Drama: Period dramas are clearly not my thing. I've only watched 3 on that list and none of them where that good.
6. Favourite Lead Couple: Argh! If only they didn't F up Temperature of Love's good start, this would have been a runaway for me.
7. Favourite Secondary Couple: Su-ji and Sang-gu will most likely runaway with this. I mean, look at the competition.
8. Favourite Character: Can we get to pick up to 5? Please!? This will also be my first 'why isn't' statement. Why isn't Se-hee nominated in this category?
9. Villain: I'll come back to you soon.
10. Favourite Bromance: Was the power of the bromance really that weak this year?
11. Favourite Girlfriends: I guess the girlfriends took over the boyfriends this year. I wish we could have picked up to 2 at least because I'm really wanted to pick the Avengers ajummas as well.
12. Best Kiss: Yeah, my underdogs Temperature of Love and Tomorrow With You did it right in this department.
13. Most Dysfunctional: I'm surprised I'm finding it this hard to choose.
14. Best Break-Out: How can I possibly choose between Kim Jung-hyun and Yang Se-jong? Maybe because I haven't seen Tunnel yet. lol. Ah, and then there's Junho! Such stiff and worthy competition in this category.
15. Most Disappointing: Can I choose up to 10?
16. Most Underrated: I only need to pick 1. Tomorrow With You seriously deserved more love.
17. Worst King: Isn't the worst king by default every king?
18. Time Bending Device: Poor Heo-im. Everyone had it easier by comparison.
19. First World Problems: Yeah, they all could split this award in some ways.

re: girlfriends. I was surprised that we only got to pick one given that many beanies have echoed your sentiments regarding how many good ones there were this year.

re: Tomorrow With You. I think one of the reasons why it's underrated may be due to the fact that many beanies couldn't look past the whole time travel mechanic/issue and how that played into the plot. I appreciated the story for the bigger picture, a couple that had some serious issues but grew to love each other deeply over time. In that way it was very much a slice of life imo and a good one at that. Not to mention the making out scenes, the really good acting, the great tone, and quite good sound and cinematography. I really loved that drama.

Agree. When I first watched LUTYN, I totally wasn't expecting myself to cry at all what's with Heo Im's antics tickled me so much in earlier episodes. But the last 2 episodes really broke my heart in a good satisfactory way. The scene where Yeon Kyung begged her grandad to let her join Heo Im in Joseon really sent me bawling. Above all, I cried because never have I felt an OTP that deserves so much happiness and happy ending more than these two. Applaud the great writing, directing and brilliant acting.

Best PPL - Doojoon screaming on a Segway, hands down

Best hair - Ddabong.

Worst hair - PSJ - Hwarang

Another vote for the Segway PPL.

As for hair: have you not seen Yoo Ah In's hair as freedom fighter Seo Hwi-Young in Chicago Typewriter. It looked so real and sexy. I'm really impressed since Yoo Ah In still had his buzz cut, so was it a wig instead of extensions? No idea. But I'm still amazed by it.

If we're talking about bad hair it'll be Park Seo-joon vs Park Seo-joon vs Park Seo-joon in Hwarang. They kept changing his hairstyle but none of it worked. T____T

@mary : Hahaha, I die with your comment 😂 Park Seo-joon's Hwarang wigs should be inducted in the Hall of Shame 😂

I started Btliof for him and was not disappointed!

Music/sound +1 vote

Sadly, again this year this doesn't make the DB awards.

SO much amazing audio in dramas this year. I can't think of Goblin, BTIOFL, FoS, LGG, BRC without their sounds and OSTs.

For every actor we loved, their connection to us was influenced by the sound editing.

For every tear drenched scene, remove the sound and its empty.

For every Kiss, not only the sound but the realisation of when to fade sound out.

KDrama's format @ 1hour is built on silence and pauses in conversation....this means sound becomes a character.

Very well said Tom! As a non-Korean, whenever I would play out my favorite KDrama scenes in my head, I would always remember the musical scoring associated with it.

@sriracha

There are many this year that are so associated with the music. My head is just a giant sound track of Kdrama moments.
................
The scene where the young Eun-Tak realises her mother is a ghost...

Han Seo-Jin had only about 10min of screen time and from a standing start - my heart was on the floor...

That scene so well cut to the OST. Thank you audio editor!

For sound/OST. Goblin. I just bought the dvd set and they went back an edited a lot of the extraneous noise (I.e. the sqeaking ski lift) and it’s SO GOOD!

Did you mean for theDVD of OST sound track or the DVD of the drama?

If they have re-mastered the sound in the episodes...Wow...

Yes I would not have loved Rebel like I did without that terrific triumphal song at the end of each episode, or Witch's Court with the same whenever she put one over on somebody.

@Tom +1 on the importance of music AND silence. As someone who relies more on auditory than visual cues, it really makes a difference in my drama-watching experience.

I should perhaps distinguish between the music cues, instrumental score, and songs/OST. BTIOFL and Man to Man had great music cues, but I only remember the odd song. In contrast, Rebel, Thief Who Stole the People incorporated traditional music in the soundtrack and it was played by characters. I still remember and can sing the songs in my pseudo-Korean.

My top 3 OSTs:
1) Goblin: because I'm still listening to it a year later! And even learning piano covers.
2) Rebel: Honey Lee. Ahn Ye Eun.
3) Liar and His Lover: I really wanted Crude Play to be real.
**Special mention to The Best Hit, that gave me several uplifting songs when I needed it.

@WishfulToki

I love both the OSTs + the sound editing in Kdrama. The OSTs are so infused with the emotion of the shows...the editing of the drama scenes to the music just pushes them right into our brains...

The fact that every show commissions new music before the shooting ...themed to the Drama's story... is one of KDramas most unique elements.

I am always amazed at the size of this pipeline...over 80 dramas a year producing new music (up to 8 songs each). It's really only other parallel is cinema.

There were some amazing characters I had to choose over, more disappointing dramas than I had thought, many great couples I could not pick and some seriously swoony kisses I had to pass over for swoonier ones.
But why wasn't Chicago Typewriter in the underrated category because it's so criminally underrated that I can't even. And why was the Goblin's dilemma not tear inducing? I cried every time Gong Yoo was sad. Like every time.

Love the year end polls, helps me review the year. Even though it was pretty lacklustre. There were underrated gems and many breakout performances. So I'm happy (pretty much)

Hmmm, I'm not so sure. Dramas that get super popular on DB tend to stay in the collective memory of the site for a long while. Healer aired around the cusp of 2015 and yet still dominated the 2015 Beanie Awards when it aired nearly a year earlier.

I know I'm biased since I really loved BTLIOF but I really don't think the numbers would be that different if it aired earlier in the year. Maybe a little bit, but not drastically.

I think it probably would. Goblin started last December and finished in January and is still raking in a lot of votes. And there haven't really been similar dramas to BTIOFL this year either.

I relish in reading every single line you guys write on these polls.

A lot of these I feel I can't properly vote in because I finished so few dramas this year, but oh well. I started enough of them to have a general idea, I think. :P

I agree! Stop making Yeo Jin-gu cry, dramaland!!! Or I'm gonna come and make YOU cry!!

Sad that Se-hee wasn't a choice for favorite character, though. But Ji-ho is a close second! And Su-ji! And Ssong!

But hold up! Why could I choose 3 bromances but only 1 girl gang? I mean, of course I voted for our Namhae girls, but I wanted to give Belle Epoque some love, too!

Also, I just read the words "This is how you kiss" and died all over again soooo...

Haven't even seen Bride of the Water God but "All the humans I love have to die, and all the gods are bitchy" made me laugh out loud.
