Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching
by DB Staff
So, what are we all watching this week?
What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…
javabeans
Because This Life Is Our First: I love the progression this show has followed, and how every episode develops and grows this relationship. Getting such a steady payoff of progress makes me able to really enjoy the small little moments… as well as the big ones, like the end of Episode 8, which I legit stood up and cheered for.
Go Back Spouses: I still have trouble with this couple being one we’re supposed to want to get back together, because right now I feel like they’re using their knowledge of the future and adults to be better partners for their alternate partners, and that seems healthier and more satisfying. The marriage seemed toxic, so it feels like their fixation on each other is tinged with toxicity. That said, I do find the show funny and breezy, even aside from the romance hiccup.
20th Century Boy and Girl: Obviously I’m all about the OTP here, but I can’t help feeling my heart pinch pre-emptively for the disappointment and heartache Anthony is in for, once he realizes he’s not the guy. He’s so sweet and earnest (if sometimes unreadable) that I like him as a person, while at the same time I feel frustrated at Ji-won for stepping aside because of Anthony. Step it up, OTP! Life is short! Be together now!
Witch’s Court: I love this couple together, and how they’ve settled into this playful vibe, and how she’s the one pestering him about liking her and he enjoys her reaction when he won’t play to her script. The cases are still completely forgettable, but as long as the characters remain at the center, I enjoy this.
Revolutionary Love: I like that Hyuk is finally getting that there’s more going on behind the scenes, and that his hyung is not the nice, supportive brother he thought. But his flashes of awareness are so fleeting in between those large swathes of obliviousness that he feels like a bipolar character. On the upside, now that Joon is cluing into her attraction to him, I feel like the relationship is actually doing something other than treading the same water where she gets angry for his mistakes and he chases her around like a sad pet.

Currently recapping: While You Were Sleeping
Because This Life Is Our First: I was all for a younger man provoking some jealousy in our couple, but I didn’t want him to be some creeper! That really took me out of the story, and was a turn I found unnecessary for a show like this. But everything else—the tiny moments of growing concern between them, the girlfriends and their hilarious but realistic relationships—is wonderful.
Temperature of Love: I’m annoyed that the thing we were all expecting—for the second lead to start wielding his money and power like a weapon—is happening in a predictable way. Where’s the twist? I really need a twist here.
Mad Dog: Mad Dog isn’t cat-and-mouse. It’s a cat following a cat following a mouse following a rat who heard from a pigeon that the cat knows secrets. I seriously can’t keep up with who’s chasing whom, but at least it’s a fun chase!
tineybeanie
20th Century Boy and Girl: It’s cute and poignant sometimes. I especially liked the scene where Ji-won was in a daze because he heard Jin-jin say “I love you,” and brought home melted ice cream and hid the cosmos flower when her brother walked him. In these moments, I can’t help but squeal at the cuteness.
Witch’s Court: Badass Yi-deum with her crafty Machiavellian tendencies was awesome. Heart-eyed Yi-deum who pursues her love target with the same unabashed straightforwardness is even more awesome. It’s refreshing to see a K-drama where the heroine is so clearly the more aggressive pursuant, because it takes out all of the unnecessary misunderstanding tropes that are so common in dramaland.
Revolutionary Love: I waver between hating Byun-hyuk’s father, and agreeing with his tough love strategy of raising his children. It’s unfortunate that Lee Jae-yoon is in another villain role though, especially because his character seems so flat and banal. It seems to be always either typical villain or super nice guy (e.g. Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju) for him, and with no characters that have interesting complexities in between.
Mad Dog: Urgh. It doesn’t make sense! How can an ultimate scam artist like Kim Min-joon just NOT notice that he was being followed by a skeevy low-life murderer?? I feel like this entire time, the drama has set me up with these expectations that Kim Min-joon, in his one-man operation, is superior to the entire Mad Dog team, but how did they somehow realize that he was being followed before he did? Shame. Shame. Shame. I expect better from you next time, Kim Min-joon (especially because if you die, I won’t get to see Woo Do-hwan—my primary impetus to turn on the telly on Wednesday-Thursday—on my screen anymore).

ONGOING
Temperature of Love: Eps 23-24 were incredibly draining and went off the tracks a bit. Thankfully, things went back on track in eps. 25-26. The turbulence in the name of realism and flipping tropes one their heads, especially because of total @$$#@+$! is somewhat questionable at times, but I love the show and our OTP enough to try to weather the storm. Seriously though, what's not to love with the quality of acting and the food porn. For me, Jung-sun is such a breath of fresh air. I haven't seen a broken character like him before which makes the dynamics of his relationship with Hyun-soo all the more interesting.
Because This Life Is Our First: The respect that Se-hee has for Ji-ho--outside of his understandable messed up behaviour that one time--is awesome. I love how he didn't jump to conclusions and investigated the issue before confronting Bok-nam and Ji-ho about it. We all know what would have happened if he did otherwise.
Totally agree @girlfriday
Buam-dong Revenge Club: It's times like these I wish I spoke Korean. Haven't seen this weeks eps yet. Waiting patiently for the subs.
The Package: Ep. 7 was really good. Most of what I wanted to happen did. Our young couple got back together with Gyung-Jae knowing exactly what So-ran was fed up with. Their relationship really does make sense. So-so and her brother have an awesome relationship. So-so's brother doesn't always do the right thing but his heart is in the right place. I appreciate how forward this show is about sex between people who don't exactly know each other. The old man continues to piss me off, but he was drowned out by the rest of awesome in this episode.

Re: The Package - I take the old man in stride because I have known someone like him in real life who doesn't know how to express emotions other than anger - and especially when upset over something that could change his whole life, he doesn't know how to communicate that - so he falls back on an angry response any time his other emotions - like grief - come close to the surface. He's the one I pity the most, because he is the type to have the most regrets in life, like not telling his wife how much she means to him before she dies.

yes, true that!
In episode 8, I'm so impressed by how very perceptive Maru is when he intuitively figured out the reason behind old man's actions.

Also, I keep on seeing Woo Do-hwan looking so good on fanwalls that I'm tempted to start Mad Dog. Okay, I confess: I watched clips of him and Ryu Hwa-young (love her) and I have a ship. So it's more like that makes me wanna watch it now but I know I do not have the time and EQ for it. Hahaha

Because This is My First Life is the only drama that gets my attention. I really love the quiet tone and the simplicity of the plot. The portrayal of the characters is quite realistic and the drama deals with so many topics that sadly do happen in our daily life. I am interested in all the characters and i hope they stay true to their personalities. I also love Sehee and Jiho relationship it feels so sincere and flows in a slow and natural way. I am anticipating the moment Sehee realize that he developed romantic feelings for his tenant wife.

Go Back Spouses has been my go-to drama because it just has so much heart and I love how slice of life it feels. It doesn't feel overly produced at all and has this nice throwback value for me. I love a good "youth" drama haha. A little sad due to the lack of Nam Gil in ep 7 but glad for the takedown.
Also watching Avenger's Club which is really a feel good drama that I just find endearing so far.
20th Century B&G, not up to date with this week's eps but I have been liking it... just I feel the pacing's a little off and disjointed? I love the friendships, family and personalities... I just wish the writing was a bit more tightly written and there was something to anticipate? Because right now, I love it and when I watch it, it's a breeze... but I'm not antsy to tune in as soon as it's out like with GBS.
I've been enjoying the recaps for BTIOFL but I don't know why I haven't gotten myself around to watching it (struggling to watch multiple live dramas at once these days).

GBS and Avenger's Club distinguished themselves as the favorites of the bunch for me this week.
These recent eps of GBS really got to me, what with the leads coming to realize how becoming parents has also changed them for the better, despite the hardships. Lol, but yeah, I hope we'll get more Nam-gil again in next week's episodes! I'm loving his attitude in these eps, hahaha. So confident!
BTIOFL is my 3rd fav, but my love for it took a slight hit this week. I think it'll probably still be wonderful enough to make up for it though, so definitely still worth a watch.

I hope the Bok Nam phase is overwith or I fear that BTIOFL will desend into the deadly “ 1/2-thru-the-K-drama-and-it-turned-to-crap” Syndrome. I was worried about the number of episodes and , alas, the scripwriter went wobbly with Stalker Boy. C’mon writer-nim!!!
Go Back Spouses has avoided stupid writer plot tricks so far.
Still watching Delightful Girl Choon Hyang. I usually watch an episode while I do the dishes. Han Chae Young unni is so pretty.
Watching an older J drama cop show, Gonzo Densetsu no Keiji.

Yup. I have a feeling next week will be crucial for me & BTLIOF. I loved the drama until the stalker boy was introduced. I need to be convinced that there is enough story for 8 more episodes. And I won't accept an ex-girlfriend showing up just to make Ji Ho jealous. Kitty will be disappointed too.

I’m curious if Ji Ho is going to try to write again or will she work at a cafe ? I have been enjoying the show , hope it shakes the need for silly tropes.

Because This Life is Our First: My opinion about the stalker arc was similar to girlfriday's, but by the end of Episode 8 I did understand why the writer went that route. I might have preferred the couple making progress without a creeper plot, but I do think something had to happen to get SH to "our."

Mad Dog: Choi Kang-Woo & Kim Min-joon, the old guy is very strict but caring meanwhile the younger is so rebel lol I love the bromance!
Witch's Court: Ma Yi-Deum is so savage and has bad tempered but she's a cry-baby once she talks about her Mother. It's a kinda Makjang like Yeo Jin-wook's Mother involving for her Mom's disappearing and the bad guy of Jo Gap-soo has possibility as her biological Father but I love this show because the character of Ma Yi-Deum is seriously fascinating to watch.
While You Were Sleeping: This show just like candy.. It's sweet and addicting lol
Buam-dong Revenge Club: If this club is exist in real life I don't mind to join them coz all of them are so adorable and innocent lol
Because This Life Is Our First: Writer made a blunder by bringing the nowhere guy name Bok-nam to the show for causing annoyance and this guy is just nothing but only a motorcycle nuts... Booyah!?! LMAO

Anyone else enjoying The Package? The scenery of France is just amazing, and the romance is light and breezy - plus the clash of personalities on the tour can be funny as heck!

Yes, it's quite wonderful. It's very cleverly structured and the dialog, acting and scenery are great. I loved how the ep. 8 didn't translate some of the French dialog until the epilogue, which made the misunderstandings between Maru & SoSo even more frustrating.

What I'm watching:
Because This Life is Our First: I AM IN LOVE~ This show is exactly what I needed after my drama. Love the comment section on this show, reminds me of Jealousy Incarnate's comment section
Go Back Spouses: Also loving this show! This show along with BTLOF are my favourite shows!
Dropped:
Witch's court: The cases are kinda meh, the villains aren't compelling and they're always on extremes.
Mad Dog: I gave this show a try for Wo Do-Hwan but the cheesiness and complete disregard for physics is a no-go for me

I was looking for news on Tribes and Empires the other day and things looked pretty quiet. I mean, for a show that looks to have as big a budget as it does, you would think they would be advertising the heck out of it. Maybe they are and it's all on Chinese websites. If you find out anything, let me know. 😀
I'm so sad to see you dropped Temperature of Love, but I don't blame you. I might just have an unhealthy relationship with it at this point.
Regarding the your psychos comment about Because This Life Is Our First, it reminded me about the only thing I knew about Korean cinema back in the day--horror and action films. There are a ton of the former, so I guess it does well in Korea.

I am very busy these days and the only show I'm watching is While You Were Sleeping. However, I just caught up to Episode 13. Woo Tak is a breath of fresh air for me.. very handsome and ohh his smile. I was nearly heartbroken when I thought he was gonna die from that stabbed wound and assault. It was such a relieve to see him recovered even when I think it was a bit unreal haha.
Didn't know how long I've lost my interest in ..oh.. I can't even recall the show's name.. ok let's try again.. Seo Hyun-jin.... oh Temperature of Love. I guess my dish is too cold I supposed. Srry Hyun-jin shi, something is off and the show is definitely not my cup of tea.

Because this is our first life: I am obsessed (as it seems is everyone else). No need to go into more details.
Go back spouses: I am having major case of Second Lead Syndrome (especially the male second lead). I hope he gets the girl at the end but we all know how this will end. Still love the show though. All the characters are so much fun to watch and I am super excited for Seol's story in the next episode.
20th Century Boy and Girl: Just start the first couple of episodes. So far so good. I love the friendships. I wish I had girlfriends like that. :)
Mad Dog: Just started it too. It looks promising and it's full of excellent actors. My hopes are high with this one.
WYWS: Meh. I watch it for Lee Jong Suk's handsome face but it's not my favorite. Suzy is better than I expected in this one.

Byun Hyuk's father is psychotic. seriously he has violent psychotic breaks when he's crossed, and that is definitely a characteristic of a good, strong leader of a corporation. So in a sharp reversal of what I'd expected from the beginning. I don't want to see this drama. seriously. I want to see the fan compilation of Byun Hyuk's (Siwon's) facial acrobatics and that's it.

I actually found This is Our Life is abit boring. Might be due to the overall acting is subpar, and don' t like the directing overall. This PD doesn't know how to direct and control his actor. Some actor just don't bother to add depth with their character. I watched Go Back Spouse the plot is nothing new, but the way they execute it, the acting is more lively. I'm just amazed at the directing Go Back SPouse. The way he handle emotional scene is a well shot and well act. I will looking forward to this director work from now on.

What I'm not watching: Before I consider what I'm watching, I'm sadly saying goodbye to what I'm dropping. Maybe at the end of each series, I may try to skip watch some of these.
Dropping:
Mad Dog, in spite of Min Joon. The happy teamwork and building of trust should have gotten underway an episode or so ago.
Black, despite the curiosity, because the characters and relationships have not grown on me after 6 episodes.
Temperature of Love, because the writing seems to be going nowhere and characters are not growing after 24 half hour episodes.
Revolutionary Love, probably because cute cannot compensate for mostly cluelessness in the male lead. Just too annoying to me.
So now I'm left with 6 shows, in order of preference:
Because This Life is Our First - wonderfully thoughtful and thought-provoking and an addictive slow-burn romance that gets us squeeing. A great comment on judging others without understanding. Best of all, there's so much 'trying to understand' between the OTP to look forward to.
Avengers Social Club - for the wonderful characters and relationships and especially for the step-mother and step-son relationship that it may unite 2 lonely and 'unwanted' people. I also really want the son to get his 'revenge' fulfilled. Heh!
Go Back Couple - I'm especially invested now that they are not just fooling around in the past but are hopefully coming back with a greater insight and maturity.
While You Were Sleeping - For the nice team-work and the way show deals with ethical and moral dilemmas in the face of upholding justice.
20th C Couple - For the realistic and cute friendships and ro/bro-mances and the social commentary on women in society.
The Package - For scenes of France and the story behind each couple in the trip.

The Package - really nice drama. underappreciated. Can go from lighthearted and then heavy in a split second. cinematography is nice. everything is so calm. very mature drama, and makes me feel as if i can tackle my own relationships by watching it. lol. the writing is nice and the plot is unexpected.
Black - started b/c SSH is hot, but his voice irks me and go ara just isn't doing it for me. The plot is so messy - on hold for now. prob won't get back to it.
Mad Dog - it was a weird and messy concept, but i tried to stick with it b/c it reminded me of leverage. watched it b/c i liked ryu hwayoung in age of youth. however, YJT's intense emotional scenes just came too often. couldn't get into it b/c of that. Gotta say, Woo Do Hwan is really intense. On hold, will prob watch it when the package ends.

I've never had so many live dramas I wanted to watch at once (9!) but work has swallowed me whole. I can't believe it but I think it's been about a week and half since I even visited :-O!!! I've dropped or gotten behind even dramas I was enjoying (While You Were Sleeping!), and completely forgot about some existing (Temp of Love!). I'm left with my fav- This Life Is Our First. I agree with all the love for it, and with the thought that a stalker-plot seemed unnecessary, but it didn't bother me much since everything else is so perfectly done.
No one is recapping The Package but it's the other one I've kept up with. I actually am enjoying it way more than I expected. I like how it actual has a French film vibe with it's lovely scenery, music, and pace.
I see I was not alone in thinking that Revolutionary Love's Hyuk was just a little too idiotic! I This is why I love this segment!
It's interesting that the ones I kept watching live don't have very high ratings at all!

Witch's Court - i love the chemistry of the leads that I would wish to ship them in real life if only YHM is single. But when I saw Lee Dongwook sent a food truck to JRW, I went shouting "Just date Dong Wook oppa instead!" HAHAHA
Mad Dog - I love the Mad Dog squad + Minjoon. Their squad feels like the Healer team to me. And the chemistry between HaRi and Minjoon is so obvious even if this show is not a romance drama.
While You Are Sleeping - I like how the story flows and how they reveal the secrets and twists of the story. But still, I'm not satisfied with how our main leads convey their emotion. TBH, i find Lee Sangyeob and Jung Haein better than our main leads in terms of acting. There are times that Lee Jongsuk is bland and I wish that he would put more emotion on some of his lines.
Because This Is My First Life - Loving the not-your-typical-love-story plot of this show. Emotionless Lee Minki is <3.
P.S.
I'm looking for a good Chinese drama right now. Something like Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms - hisrtorical, fantasy or wuxia with a happy ending.
