[Theme of the Month] Our relationship to music and dramas
by javabeans
Music is this month’s theme! More specifically:
What is your relationship with music and dramas?
It’s a broad topic, but one that we wanted to leave somewhat open because there are so many ways in which music and dramas intersect, and how we as viewers relate to that.
Maybe one reader will love all musical-themed dramas under the sun (see: Dream High, Shut Up: Flower Boy Band). Maybe another will be enamored of a particular type of background score, or OST ballad. Someone else may have a different relationship entirely.
What we aren’t asking is for you to only talk about your favorite music in a drama, or your favorite drama about music. We want to hear about how music and dramas intersect, and how that affects your viewing experience. (Of course, feel free to talk about your favorite OSTs and dramas about music! We’re just not restricting the topic to those areas.)
To submit:
- Email your submissions to [email protected]. If you have a registered Dramabeans account, include your handle so we can link to it.
- Include at least 1 image, though more is preferred.
- Suggested length: Between 500 and 1,000 words.
- Deadline: We will post these on a rolling basis, so we’re taking submissions now. We will cut off accepting submissions on September 25. If you miss this month, join us for a new theme in October!
(Tip: Please name your documents and attachments something other than “Theme of the month” or “Dramabeans,” please! Submissions can be hard to track if they’re all named the same thing.)

Beside the chemistry between characters, I think the OSTs was one factor which kept me enjoying the sloppily writen Heartstring. All of them is good song and I appreciate it even more as they cast real musicians (Jung Yonghwa and Kang Minhyuk) for the characters who do music. It brings the sense of realism to higher degree.
It is something that hardly presents when the drama cast actor who only learns before filming or who never actually experiences real stage performance. Not even Joo Won and Shim Eunkyung (in Tomorrow's Cantabile) makes it believable enough.
Different story with Nodame Cantabile, though. Tamaki Hiroshi's acting is too strong that it overshadows the mismatch hand-synching for piano/violin scenes. He even gets praised from the actual conductor when it comes to conducting scenes, proving how great he is at recreating. But it has to be noted that he is musician & singer irl too. Of course his musical sense be a great help to the acting.

Oh Lord, this is gonna be friggin' hard.
I literally live for OSTs and I have like so much OSTs in my phone in folders. I even play them on my piano or guitar so this challenge is just made for me.
Imma start writing this one right away. Wooooo!

I forgot Kill Me, Heal Me, where every theme was like the heartbeat of the character it represented, especially Shin Se Gi´s flamboyant tune Freak. It is a drama that could be developed into a musical or a ballet on stage. I am imagine a song called "Oppa!" by Ahn Yo Na, "Remember..." by Shin Se Gi... ah, but poor actor who has to do everything though. Another drama that I think would transfer excellently into a musical is Oh My Ghostess. Emotional side covered by the ghost, cute side by Bong-Sun. and think of the evil ghost having a song!

OSTs introduced me to K-pop (started with Fly To The Sky singing the theme for Fashion 70s). My all-time faves for OSTs are:
- Soulmate
- I'm Sorry I Love You
- Chuno
Last soundtrack I really liked was Another Oh Hae Young.

Chuno seriously has some of the best non-lyrical OSTs in kdramaland. I haven't watched the drama but I'm a fan of its OST. "Biingnyeolii" is an amazing instrumental piece on its own!

I cant be the only one who watched whats up back then.. right?
I think my favourite use of ost would be the death song in Moon Lovers. I love how they use that song to accompany the death scenes, and how not every character deaths get the privilege to have that song play lol which i guess gives us an insight of how we should be looking at the characters. Its like an added aspect to interpret the characters, the scenes and the plot..

Music in dramas is a huge topic, to me the ost were and still are, my first steps into the k pop. I was introduce to Ailee on Fated to love you and I loooove her. I did also found out about BtoB while playing stuff in Youtube and listened so many time "For You" that I watched Cinderella and 4 knights after it.
This is a great topic and maybe it will help us to widen our K. OST playlist

Maybe because Sassy Girl Chun Hyang drama is my most fav. romcom, I really love that OST by Lim Hyung Joo - Haeng Bok Ha Gil Ba Rae. I still listening to that song until today even I watched that drama like 10 years ago.
Other than that, I love Gumiho OST- Fox Rain because it has=s really unique sound and never I pay attention to the BGM until I watched Mirror of the Witch. The soundtrack during the Saeron's transformation using Korean traditional instruments is really creepy and amazing. I'm watching Save Me nowadays and the drumming part for intense BGM remind me of Mirror of the Witch sound.

Ohhhhhh! Perfect theme! So vital to completing the "feels" of a drama! Of course, it's a full circle … the acting, direction, and script must be in sync for the true magic to happen.
However, that doesn't mean that a drama that goes awry could still hold its own with the OST … ? ? ? Can't wait for the chosen article!

One of my earliest obsession with OSTs was with the Spring Waltz OST, even more so than that of Winter Sonata, in fact.
And I have a particular fondness for when the Leads sing for the OST.

I was going through YouTube and saw a full playlist of the OST for On the Way to the Airport. Gave it a listen after a very long time and now the songs are on repeat. I can't really pick a favourite because I love all songs equally.
I now remember why I love the OST so much. They're very calming and soothing. I can picture myself going for a drive a night while enjoying the night breeze and listening to these lovely tunes.
I really wanna do that right now except that it's almost midnight. Don't think I'll be able to feel calm driving alone at this hour ?

I really like Love in the Moonlight OST, especially the instrumentals by Second Moon (Moonlight Flow is my ringtone! ). Also JKS drama OSTs and Because This is my first life OST. In the latter, I listen to Moonmoon's song pretty often, and love how the lyrics resonates with our modern life so well, as does the whole drama of course.
