[Theme of the Month] Challenge! Revisit an old drama

It’s August, which means it’s time to set aside our Changing Tastes theme and introduce our new one for the month! (Side note of panic: How is it August already? How, who, where, whaaa? Time stops for no one.)

The prompt for August is a little different than the past two months, in that we’re making it a “challenge” on top of a write-up. Your mission, should you choose to accept it:

Revisit a drama you’ve already seen, which you haven’t seen in a while, and let us know: Is it any different this time around? Does it hold up, or was it really best left in its own time? Do you still love it as much as you used to? What’s changed, and what hasn’t changed at all?

Tip: You needn’t watch every single episode of the drama in order to participate — we’re not slave-drivers! By all means watch the whole thing if you like, but it’s not a requirement.

I bet some of you are rubbing your hands together and cackling in glee over this one. You got this!

To submit:

  • Email your submissions to [email protected]. If you have a registered Dramabeans account, include your handle so we can link to it.
  • Include at least 1 image, though more is preferred.
  • Suggested length: Between 500 and 1,000 words.
  • Deadline: We will post these on a rolling basis, so we’re taking submissions now. We will cut off accepting submissions on August 25. If you miss this month, join us for a new theme in September!

(Tip: Please name your documents and attachments something other than “Theme of the month” or “Dramabeans,” please! Submissions can be hard to track if they’re all named the same thing.)

Oh, I've got so many dramas I'd love to re-watch! I keep saying "one day," so maybe this is my chance. Whatever it is, though, I'd definitely re-watch it in its entirety--no skimming. I'm not a skimmer. I either watch it all, or not at all. That said, it's gonna be hard to cram an entire drama while life (I'm really talking about work here) goes on. Eh, I might try this, though. It's not called a challenge for nothin', right?

Oh, nice topic! I recently rewatched Splish Splash Love and for some reason, I loved it a thousand times more!!!
I usually watch and re-watch all of my dramas.
The most replays was probably HEALER... because well... its HEALER!
The exception is BOF because no matter how much I love LMH and BOF, that hot mess is just too much for me to bear!

The one drama I can rewatch is cunning single lady, my favorite drama ever. I tried rewatching secret garden and could barely make it pass the first episode, lol

Too many to choose from! Coffee Prince, I'm Sorry I Love You, Heartless City (anyone else miss serious Jung kyung ho?) Scent of a Woman, Two Weeks. Feels like I need a rewatch as the recent dramas haven't really grabbed me.

If you miss Jung Kyung-Ho, he was just in Missing 9 with Baek Jin-Hee. He wasn't as serious in this one but I loved his character.

I watched missing 9 but was really disappointed in the ending. I like him in moodier roles but he mainly seems to do rom/com these days

I am currently re-watching Coffee Prince with my sister who is watching it for the first time and I am truly happy to report that this drama is still as good as it was 10 years ago, maybe even better. I watched it when I was young and did not understand some aspects of it which I now have way more appreciation for.

To me, Coffee Prince is the gold standard for gender-bender kdramas and Yoon Eunhye is the most convincing boy in kdramaland so far. She did so well in her role. Gong Yoo portrayed the struggles really well. Because of my re-watch, I'm reminded of the awesome OST of this drama, even the unofficial ones. I love how they included English songs and they all fit the scenes. Oh and I love how some scenes, especially the emotional ones, did not have any background music. I love how I can hear just the conversation of the characters and the emotion is still there and even more magnified. So raw.

Anyway, yes! I still love love love Coffee Prince.

I think I'm gonna do this month's theme. Only problem is my favorite dramas to rewatch are from 2012, so not that old.

oohh... i want to submit an entry because i did just revisit a very old, 10years ago, drama but it's a Jdrama - Hanazakari no Kimitachi so it may not be allowed. It's still a lot of fun to watch!

Miss Korea was another drama that I tend to re-watch every time I see comments about Lee Yeon Hee's "bad" acting. I keep asking myself if I got tricked or if I'm not just a good judge of acting but every time I watch it, I just find myself liking LYH each time. She was just very good in it, as in lights out good. It is like watching an athlete that was in the zone. Not sure if LYH will be as good in her other projects (though I still believe that it is difficult to fluke your way through one drama with many scenes and episodes) but I must say that she has never looked more radiant, never more breathtaking, never more beautiful, than when she was the sassy yet vulnerable elevator girl turned Miss Korea, Oh Ji-young.

Suggestion: That much under-appreciated grown-up drama, "Alone in Love," could use a re-watch review. I am unable to do it. On my personal scale of 0-5, it is a 4. (Only Misaeng is a 5.)

I enjoyed reading the entries to this challenge. I particularly liked the super throwback ones from before kdrama ruled the globe. Made me add a few titles to my to-watch list. I hope it gets extended. :)
