Park Bo-gum offered Hong sisters fantasy romance Hwayugi

I’m trying really hard not to get my hopes up, but how is that even possible when Park Bo-gum (Moonlight Drawn By Clouds) might be coming back in a new drama? Eeeeeee! He’s currently entertaining an offer to star in the Hong sisters’ new fantasy romance Hwayugi, which is headed to tvN later this year and already courting Cha Seung-won (Hwajeong) to co-star.

The fantasy drama is a reimagining of the Chinese classic novel Journey to the West, called Seoyugi in Korean, but modernized for a contemporary setting. In the original tale, a monk goes on a journey with four companions who need to atone for their sins. Among them, Sun Wukong the Monkey King is the most mischievous and troublesome, a minor god who is powerful and quick-witted but also quick to anger, and has a great deal to overcome and atone for. Sun Wukong is the character Park Bo-gum is up to play, and he’s considering the script but nothing has been decided.

In the modernized drama retelling, the heroine will be the monk character, and the drama is about her and Sun Wukong “finding the light in a dark world overrun with evil spirits.” The monk is described as snobby and materialistic, while Sun Wukong is corrupt. He was extremely powerful, but because of his pride, his powers were sealed up and he was exiled to the human world, where he became a bystander who does nothing but idly watch people fall to ruin. One day he discovers that the monk can unseal his powers, and they end up bickering their way to love.

Cha Seung-won is considering the role of Woo Hwi-chul, based on the Bull Demon King who is Sun Wukong’s sworn brother. In the drama, Woo Hwi-chul is described as a gentleman and a successful businessman. I expect some sort of impish twist on this character too, given the kinds of personalities we’re in for. The drama is said to be a mix of horror, thriller, comedy, and romance, not to mention that it’ll be adapting some of the fantasy mythology of Journey to the West; I hope the Hong sisters are well-rested and bringin’ their A-game on this one! I’m hopeful because they’re reuniting with PD Park Hong-kyun of Best Love and Queen Seon-deok, but let’s cross all fingers and toes just in case. If you make me mad at Park Bo-gum the Monkey God, I will never forgive you!

Hwayugi is slated to air on Saturdays and Sundays on tvN beginning in December.

Gosh, reunion between Hong sisters (I still believe in you!) and Cha Seung-won and now Park Bo-gum can be in this drama as well? Yes, yes, yes! Beanies, let's prepare some offerings for Drama Gods so they make it happen!

Okay! What makes a good offering?
I've got some seaweed, red pepper powder, gochujang, and sesame oil that I'm willing to give to the drama gods so they can provide to the actors to use in their dramas! I would've had kimchi, too, but mama used it all to make beef and kimchi soup!

One day he discovers that the monk can unseal his powers, and they end up bickering their way to love. Wut.
Ha, I loved finding out that in this retelling, the monk character's gonna be our heroine, and was wondering if that meant the monk will fall in love with one of the other four companions, and whaddya know. It's kinda weird to grasp, since I keep imagining the classic tale, but hey, if it's well put together, then I'll be more than happy to be open minded and optimistic about it.

Love Cha Seung-won and if Bogummy's in this, I definitely am too. I'd love to see Bo-gum be mischievous and an all-around troublemaker, because as much as I love seeing him be an angel in his projects and irl, I really think he'll be really good at playing a characater that's not so good.

Lol don't know about others, but the mention of monk makes me remember park shin hye's nun character from 'you're beautiful'. If the story is anything as good as master's sun or TGL, we will be good to go. I think the actors alone are enough to make this drama hit. Big was too makjang so I am hoping they won't go that drastic route again ,?.

Has anyone seen the original Monkey King? That monkey was freaky, so I'd be glad to have Bo Gum erase any memory I have of that crazy monkey!!!

I clicked on this article after seeing "Park BoGum" and "Hong sisters" because I cannot even begin to describe how much I love the both of them, but what got me most excited at the end of reading all this was the fact that this drama will be a spinoff of Sun WuKong!! I grew up watching that cartoon, so the characters and plot are very near and dear to my heart. Ahhh I am so excited!!

Come to me PBG you sweetie pie!! *pinches cheeks*

I will admit this is one of the rare instances where I have INSTA-HYPE for a show. Like come on! PBG? Another interpretation of Journey to the West? I will never get tired of either of these things. Monkey King was one of the first thing I read as a kid and having survived thru multiple interpretations I've grown to look forward to and appreciate each new one. I don't care if it's the same old or if they've twisted it completely. That's what classics are for.

If PBG backs out tho that might be a different story. I need my fix! My PBG fix!

Wow @ the Hong sisters grabbing them Reply boys 3 times in a row. I mean there was Seo Inguk in Master's Sun then there was Yoo Yeonsuk in Warm and Cozy and now there's Park Bogum. Hahaha

Anyways, I'm not sure how I feel about this. The Hong sisters works are either a hit or a miss for me. Warm and Cozy was a big disappointment for me but i do have to say that the premise for that drama was pretty bland to begin with. So it wasn't really a surprise to be completely honest. I remembered when news about that drama first came up, I was thinking, "huh. The plot sounds really unexciting." Lol

For this one, the premise sounds quite intriguing at least that's abit promising. Plus as a fan of fantasy, this sounds pretty cool.

I actually did enjoy Big for its first few episodes before it went downhill. Lol.

This time, the Hong sisters had a long break so hopefully they have something great up their sleeves planned during that 2 year hiatus. Plus, the combination of Cha Seungwon and Park Bogum? It would be a definite must-watch.

Missing Bogummy acting again so much. Hope for Hong sisters to be an effective writer again after several duds. Getting so excited with this news and hopeful for a positive confirmation from Bo Gum for any drama that is.

Not sure how I feel about this since I grew up reading and watching Journey to the West! But since this is the Hong sisters.... I wonder who might be the female lead since Hong sisters love to cast actors that they've worked with before.

I honestly thought CSW would be the monk and PBG would be the monkey. Didn't expect CSW to be the bull demon!

I'm very curious about this adaption since it's such a well-known story that has spawned plenty of Chinese dramas and movies already. The characterization and premise already seem to be different from the descriptions. In any case, I hope Bogummy signs on as the Monkey King. I really wanna see him back in dramaland.

I'm hoping Cha Seung-won passes on this. I was excited initially because I thought he was the lead, but it's clear this story will be about Park Bo-gum's character.

In that case, I'm not interested in seeing Cha Seung-won playing second fiddle. I want another quality watch like Greatest Love or City Hall with him as the star.

I do agree that it's a shame that CSW is playing second fiddle on this, but it's quite understandable since his last drama over at a public broadcasting station didn't do well. His character seems like a scene-stealer though and based on his statements at his Japan fan-meeting he's stoked about the project, and he has already worked with the writers so...
