Im Ji-yeon considers drama reunion with Sung Joon in rom-com Mojito

There’s a potential new drama reunion in the works for High Society co-stars Sung Joon (Perfect Wife) and Im Ji-yeon (Blow Breeze), who are both considering offers to star as love interests in a new romantic comedy drama called Mojito.

It’s weird to think of them as a couple because I’ve seen High Society, where Im Ji-yeon had a super cute loveline with Park Hyung-shik, and Sung Joon had a super broody one with UEE, and they were all friends. It was one of those dramas where I really liked the secondary couple and nothing else, but because Im Ji-yeon was winsome and charming in it, I can see her being a good rom-com heroine.

Mojito is described as an upbeat romantic comedy about an heir with a negative bank balance who becomes anxious at night, and so he decides to open up a bar that only operates in the daytime. Sung Joon is up for the lead role, and Im Ji-yeon has received the offer to play the heroine, who has lived with insufficient funds her entire life. So, exactly like her High Society character then. They’ll meet at the bar and help each other overcome past wounds, and fall in love.

The 16-episode series is reportedly being considered at KBS for its new Friday-Saturday timeslot, but KBS says that no decision has been made. It was originally announced as a pre-produced series, but that may change depending on which broadcaster ends up picking it up.

So... another candy-type character for her? (A bar that operates in the daytime sounds kinda weird, heh.)

When I saw this heading I also thought it was kinda weird because of High Society, hah! I liked her there, but when I watched Jackpot, I wasn't impressed by her character portrayal there at all, so I've mixed feelings about whether I'll try another of her shows again...

I'm also vaguely meh about Sung Joon because of High Society (liked Hyungsik way too much over the main couple), but hopefully I'll have the time to give this a try when it airs!

I only ever saw her in Jackpot, I wait for the feedbacks on this one before I invest my time in it.

I'm not sure that it'd be a good idea to have Hyungsik appear, even briefly-- it might lead to a lot of us becoming cameo-shippers.

I loved her in High Society! And loved her with Park Hyungsik! They are still one of my favorite kdrama couple! But, she was great with Sung Joon too (maybe it was the UEE-Sung Joon that just didn't work out, as she was great with UEE too!) so hoping to see them both together! With a cameo from Park Hyungsik?! Please drama gods!

Ha, a cameo from Park Hyung-shik would be fun. They could milk a lot of meta from High Society. Im Ji-yeon was pretty decent in that drama, although Sung Joon was a bit stiff (probably cuz of the character). Maybe he might loosen up if this new role is a bit wackier?

Recycle. Rinse. Repeat. Recycle. I didn't watch Perfect Wife beyond the second episode, but I'm wondering if Sung Joon can expand his acting repertoire into other territory than handsome male lead? Frankly, I think he sucks as a romcom lead (High Society, Madam Antoinette) but was fantastic in his characters in White Christmas and Shut Up Flower Boy Band. Maybe playing a detective for a change?

yeah he was so good in White Christmas , it's a shame that a he keeps getting cast in romcoms. I think he should go for something different like a detective or police as you said.

tbf, High Society wasn't a rom com and Madam Antoinette was so badly written no one could have saved it (his character was a complete asshole and the show made no sense). I liked him in INR3. He isn't a particularly versatile actor, and he really needs good writing and directing to shine (like in White Christmas and SUFBB, which is still his best role imo). I've been saying this for ages, but he really needs a better agency.

Visually - they are matched with each other. Acting - not sure. I liked Sung Joon -Uee storyline better in High Society (despite of lack of chemistry etc) because I like more mature story, and didn't really like second leads storyline like many others( yeah they were cute but that's all).

I think Sung Joon always match well with noona, but maybe it depends on the storyline too. Im Ji Yeon was always a miss for me, including her recent project Blow Breeze (it was due to poorly written drama as well). These two are just meh but if you give them a storyline like what she had with Park HYun Sik in HS, maybe it will be watcheable because the lack of acting can sometimes be covered with the loads of amounts of cuteness of the romance and loveline (just like My Secret Romance).

I actually love the description of Sung Joon's character in this. And I would be keen on the idea of a daytime bar. Still have the moody lighting and expensive drinks, sleek atmosphere, and some blissful quiet.

Sung Joon.. He has a perfect visual from head to toe but idk so far I'm not so impress with his acting (his role). Maybe he should try a different role or genre. Don't give him a suit or being a Tsundere... Maybe he should try a thriller instead rom-com?

So disagree, I'm impressed with his acting on every level! And put him in a suit? Yes please! Could never get tired of that! But it doesn't matter what he's wearing, I'll take it! And if you want to see him in a different role, try Jekly & Hyde, or his upcoming action packed crime thriller movie Villainess!

Oh my gosh in Hyde, Jekyll he freaked me out. He was no Shin Sung Rok, don't get me wrong. But I really felt like he could go off kilter and kill the entire cast between episodes 14 - 16, just for being connect to Hyun Bin.

Which may be my preferred ending for that drama. Imho, he outacted Hyun Bin but that could be just because Bin phoned it in.

No, just no. The only thing that made the whole ordeal that was High Society somehow bearable was Hyungsik (even earning Yoo Ah In's praise for his performance and now they're in the same agency). He hard carried the show and Im Ji Yeon heavily depended on him. They sure were cute together but acting wise, he's on another league imo. Sung Joon needs a strong partner to shine and Im Ji Yeon is certainly not the right one. Why not choose someone like Baek Jin Hee for example? They would make an interesting pair imo.

Ya I agree, Hyungsik act circles around her and sungjoon lol, UEE held on her own even though her role was kind of 'lame', like I don't get it, how in the world she could fall for a boring man like Sung Joon? How???

In conclusion that drama was a waste of time

Me too! High Society introduced me to Park Hyungsik, so even though it was pretty terrible I will always remember that drama. I first watched it for Sung Joon but stuck around for Park Hyungsik and Im Ji Yeon! As GF said, there were the only good thing in that drama! But they were both brilliant! Their characters could have been annoying, I am not a fan of crybabies, but Im Ji Yeon was too lovable as a crybaby, not sure other actresses could have pulled that off. And Hyungsik expression whenever she cried or was about to cry, too cute! Ah, makes me want to rewatch that drama...or, better yet, can we just have them both star as the lead in another drama?! Please drama gods, please! I know it will be hard to see them as a different couple, but I would just like to see more of them together please!

Hmm. I agree Hyung Shik's on another league, however Im ji yeon is still a strong actor and in my opinion, waaaay stronger than Sung Joon. I felt Sung Joon suffered from flat effect. It may have been in part due to his character in High Society but I believe its also his performance. Then again, I've only seen him in HS so perhaps he has performed otherwise elsewhere..

Yeah, if you're just judging him on High Society, you need to watch his countless other dramas & movies, omgoodness you don't know what you're missing! He is hands down my favorite actor, so I don't get the criticism at all! I was impressed from the first time I saw him, and every drama since, no matter what character he is playing. And that's the point, you have to understand the CHARACTER he is playing to truly appreciate him and his acting. But I get him every time, to me he is one of the most natural & versatile actors. Not to mention his stunning good looks, hypnotizing voice, boyish grin & charm but very manly at the same time, yeah he's got it all for me!
And as good as Hyung Shik was in HS, I haven't seen him shine as much in other dramas, he's just ok. And he can look feminine at times, Sung Joon is always a man!

Yes @kakakashI would definitely recommend it. Like I said I love him no matter what, and I even liked his character on HS, but where that drama suffered was in the writing and story telling. It had so much potential and could have been better had it been better written, imo. They spent way too much air time on yoon ya's family drama which was over the top and pointless & so annoying. And not enough time on Joon ki's character development & transition, and developing his & Yoon ya's relationship after all the misunderstandings were cleared up. They crammed it all in the last episode, and barely got to see them together the last 10 min of the drama, so there was so much "could have, should have beens in it for me, but I liked the deep issues they tried but failed to fully address in that drama. I think the other cute couple was just in their for fluff, but I loved them too, and I loved the relationship & issues between Hyung Shik's character & Joon ki. Anyway that's my take lol. But I would definitely recommend I Need Romance 3 for pure romance enjoyment, White Christmas & Hyde Jekyl & Me for a different side of SJ, Shut Up Flower Boy Band is another favorite and he has a great singing voice! I personally also loved Madame Antoine, another criticized one, but again I understood & loved his character. But probably my favorite yet is his latest one Perfect Wife, he really showed a different side, quirky, funny, charming, and emotional! It just made me wanting more of him! I only watched it for him though, and probably would not have enjoyed it as much if it had not been for him! I just started watching his older drama Can We Get Married and love it too! So that's more of my Sung Joon rant!?

1

LOL @KB, thanks for the detailed rant and explanation! I totally agree HS was a mess writing wise. Always cool to run across diehard fans, makes me feel like less of a stalker myself ? (my Oppa's of all time include Seo In-guk & Hyung-shik).

The premise doesn't sound that exciting. Sung Hoon is also a rather bland actor in my books. Lead actress is quite ok. Think I'll pass. Too many dramas, too little time.

I really liked her in High Society since her relationship with Park Hyung Shik was just so adorable. It was all fluffy and lighthearted whereas Sung Joon's relationship with UEE was a little more intense. I don't think I could really see them together, but I will certainly give this show a try. Overall, I have a very good impression Im Ji Yeon and like many said before, if Park Hyung Shik did a cameo, all my feelings for this past couple might even beat the main couple line.

I don't particularly like Sung Joon, nor do I see him taking this kind of role after things like Madam Antoine where he played very upright characters. Regardless, I'm interested in seeing where this project goes.

I beg to disagree & agree with most of the comments here. I agree I'm not sure about her for this role, especially with my Sung Joon! I liked her in High Society with Hyungsik as well, they were adorable, and I liked her friendship with Sung Joon & Uee, but not sure about a romance for these two, would much rather see him with a more fiery, exciting actress?

But as far as Sung Joon goes, I'm over the top excited to see him in anything again! I have absolutely loved him in everything he's been in, he's played different characters in every one and I thought he portrayed each character perfectly! Like in High Society, the one that gets the most criticism, his acting was on point. He was more serious, stiff, and subdued because that was the CHARACTER & personality he was playing! His character Joon ki was jaded, disillusioned & calculating but he was still a good person, he was just closed off to his feelings and had put up a wall to defend himself in his pursuit of what he thought would bring him happiness. He was very focused almost to the point of having blinders, so he wouldn't allow anything to get in his way of achieving his goal, not even his love for his mother. I think he understood his character very well & portrayed it. The problem was not with his acting but on the writing & story line. They spent way too much time getting him to his point of realization of what he really wanted & his love for Yoon ha, then they only had 1 or 2 ep left so there wasn't enough time to fully develop his character transformation or his love & relationship with Yoon-ha. That was disappointing! There was way too much time spent on the side story issues of Yoon-ha's family that were needless & frustrating. They needed to focus more on the main couples, but that's not his fault.

Then Madam Antoine? Again that is one of my favorite of his omgoodness! Don't know how people cannot like him in that! Again, I don't think they are understanding the CHARACTER he is playing & portraying! I thought he was outstanding in that, he was smart, funny, romantic, and serious with issues to overcome. It had everything! And to say he's not cut out for romantic leads!!?? Are you just blind? Have you not seen him kiss, or talk, or his expressions, or his smile, or grin???? He doesn't even have to speak, sometimes his look or expression says it all, that is great acting, when you can tell what they are thinking with just a look.
And Perfect Wife? That was his best performance yet imo! Hands down, he was exceptional in every way! I don't care what drama or role he has, but when he comes on the screen, he steals the scene for me, he is all I notice or see! His persona from head to toe is so dang captivating! I could go on & on! Lol!

And if you want to see him in a different role, watch Jekly & Hyde, he wasn't even in a romantic role, but that's where I first saw and fell in love with him! I was like, who is this guy? Again, he just completely captivated &...

Just give me lots of SUNG JOON kisses, that's all I ask!

Eh...I actually feel his role in Perfect Wife was alright, but not impressive. On the other hand his puppy love in I Need Romance 3 was magical - it was the first time I saw Sung Joon in anything, and I thought he WAS the character. He's soft-spoken, thoughtful, loving, and he just gives, gives, gives without being calculating or selfish.

I must admit I'm probably biased, so I ended up disappointed in his subsequent roles. I feel the same way about Lee Jinwook - he was so charismatic as a Sunwoo in Nine: Nine Times Time Travel, I can never love him as much in anything else.

Yes INR3 was definitely the perfect role from him, i can't say enough about my love for him in that, it's what sealed the deal for me! But I truly like him in everything. I really loved the quirky, wacky, goofy side of him yet charismatic & boyish charm & emotional side too in Perfect Wife, idk I just loved it! It's funny though that the first role I saw him in was Jekyl & Hyde, which wasn't even a romantic role but a somewhat of a villain, and I absolutely fell in love with him & his acting, he just completely mesmerized & "hypnotized" me! His look, his stare, and his voice! Uhhh!

I don't know if the drama sounds that exciting. Definitely will depend on the writing. I thought Sung Joon was quite good in Perfect Wife and in terms of a quality drama, I think PW has been his best one since I Love Romance III (that I've seen anyway). I don't blame him for High Society, a drama I dumped after one episode because of the story.
