A flirty prince and a tragic twist in Ruler–Master of the Mask

Okay, this new teaser for Ruler–Master of the Mask is pretty adorable. The prince is a total flirt! From what we’ve seen of MBC’s new historical melodrama so far, it appeared to be rife with tension and epic tragedy, about a prince forced to hide his face behind a mask and a young woman who vows to get revenge on him. But in the latest teaser, there’s youthful love and a whole lot of cheeky flirting from the prince… before the tragic twist brings on a shower of tears. Hey, I didn’t say the show became a comedy, did I?

Yoo Seung-ho (Remember–Son’s War) stars as a lonely Joseon prince who is forced to wear a mask, a mystery that drives him out of the palace in search of answers about his own past. Kim So-hyun (Bring It On, Ghost) is a young noblewoman from a family of warriors, described as fiercely independent and unladylike. Atta girl. L (She’s So Lovable) co-stars as a lowly butcher’s son with a brilliant mind who will become a stand-in for the prince, and Yoon So-hee (Memory) is the granddaughter of the prince’s greatest enemy.

In the teaser, the prince reveals himself inside a palanquin and shares a charged moment with Kim So-hyun… and then suddenly asks, “Am I good-looking?” which earns him an incredulous look. Uh, is he joking, or does he actually not know because he’s worn a mask all his life? He starts following her around eagerly, peppering her with questions: “What’s your name? Are you betrothed to anyone?” Her father feeds him happily and invites the young man to come by their home often, much to her embarrassment.

But then a tragic twist changes everything, and the heroine watches in horror as the masked prince publicly executes her father. The copy reads: “A wrong start. Crisscrossed fates.” The prince is trapped inside the palace as he wails, “Please!” and his voice shakes as he asks, “What do you mean it’s all my fault?” Kim So-hyun screams, “Why?!” but all he can say in the end is, “I’m truly sorry.”

I would be more upset about the loss of innocent puppy love if I didn’t already know this was a story where she’ll fall in love with the prince she vows to kill, but I’ll be selfish and hope for my sake that we get to spend a fair amount of time with princey loverboy before tragedy strikes.

Ruler–Master of the Mask follows Radiant Office on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning May 10.

Kim so Hyun has killer looks in sageuk always. She is so pretty...
I should be swooning over Too seung Ho here... But couldn't really take my eyes off this pair.... Why should this be a melo... Why can it not be a romcom.... Drama Gods please look on us.....

Hahaha, I adore their first meeting and all the flirting that follows! He's so cheeky.

And ooof, the tragic turn really is reminiscent of The Princess's Man now, especially if their romance plays a part in leading to her father's demise. Even more so, if he keeps his true identity from her at first. This time the roles are reversed though and that will be very interesting to see!

Uhm. The crown prince execute kim so hyun's father himself? Did I watch it wrong? Or is it just a metaphor to show that he ordered the execution? Anyway, Kim So Hyun and Yoo Seung Ho's acting chops are no joke. I could feel the deep sorrow exuding in my screen whenever they cry ( based on the recent teasers) what more in the drama itself? thank the dramagods for giving us this dream OTP ?

Maybe the mask has a mind of its own and controls whoever owns it for a certain amount of time, but then YSH's characters learns how to tame it - hence the title? ?

I think the King makes someone wear the mask and clean his dirty laundry for him in the name of the crown prince. To make him a strong King in the future who is 'fearless' or something. That's what he vaguely mentioned in the previous teaser. In the synopsis and character descriptions, the prince comes across as righteous so unless Ga-eun's father was truly at fault, I don't think he'd agree to just execute him like that.

This will give us another unreasonable king and father which slightly annoys me. I guess being sitted on the throne will make you do everything you can to protect it. Regarding the theory of letting someone wear a mask to execute Ga Eun's father, I'm curious if it
is the beginning of the stand in crown prince or the king already did it before. I really wanted to know how L's character will be mixed in the plot.

I expect L's character to turn dark as soon as the love story hits the climax. But because this happens so early in the story, I doubt it would be L doing the execution. Another stand-in is definitely what I'm predicting.

I also think it is not YSH thus there's a camera shot of him grieving behind a door. Pitiful crown prince. He grew up hiding his face & being manipulated. Aside from the tragic romance, i'm really looking forward to his rise as a king. I hope he will not really give up his throne. That character description is just a misdirection *please*

I saw MBC's instagram post 24hrs before they released the new teaser. At least they know what most if not everyone's waiting for, i.e. The OTP. They promised "heart fluttering" and delivered so I can't complain.

Flirty YSH is just asdfghjkl!!! I.am.so.excited. This drama looks and feels so much like The Princess' Man - and this steady stream of teasers is just making me so impatient. I need this drama now! Or at least I need an OTP teaser every day. Not that much to ask...?

That was all kinds of feels for the trailer alone. I can't wait for this drama. But their tragic fate will probably tear my heart soon, but hopefully they still get a lot of swoon moments before that happens.
