Ji Sung’s imprisoned mind and body in first teaser for Defendant
by chickachunga
The first teaser is out for SBS’s upcoming Monday-Tuesday legal thriller Defendant, and it already looks as though Ji Sung (Entertainer) is poised to draw out the tears with a stirring performance as a prosecutor-turned-defendant on death row who’s convicted of a crime he has no recollection of, and forced to prove his innocence while time runs out.
Ji Sung takes on the lead role of accomplished prosecutor Park Jung-woo, who goes from an illustrious legal career to prime suspect behind bars for the murder of his wife and daughter. He’s wrongly accused of this tragic crime, but is unable to remember the events of the last four months, so he painstakingly writes down fragments of his memories in a journal in the hopes of piecing together the truth that will set him free.
Eom Ki-joon (Night Teacher) plays dual roles as twin brothers Cha Sun-ho and Cha Min-ho, the latter of which is the epitome of evil who’s deceived the world into thinking he’s innocent. Defendant comes from writers Choi Su-jin (City Hunter) and Choi Chung-hwan, and is directed by PD Jo Young-kwang (Hyde, Jekyll, Me).
The teaser opens with Ji Sung, determined and authoritative as a Seoul Central District prosecutor. “I’ll catch him. Cha Min-ho,” he says, and we see Eom Ki-joon as Cha Min-ho, drunk and dragging a golf club along the floor before he uses it to strike someone who was hiding in the closet. We hear a bloodcurdling scream, and Ji Sung cries out in agony in prison, thinking of his wife and daughter.
He suddenly goes from star prosecutor to prison inmate and we hear him whisper, “I don’t remember. I must find whoever did this.” The copy reads, “Murdered wife and missing daughter. The world says I’m the culprit. Memories erased. I must retrieve everything.”
That brief glimpse of Eom Ki-joon was quite chilling, and knowing that he’ll be playing twin brothers will probably double the chill factor and suspense. And Ji Sung never disappoints, so I hope Defendant turns out to be a worthwhile project for him.
Defendant will premiere on SBS on January 23, after Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim ends.

Yes! Ji Sung!
It's a shame he's been stuck with an actress like Yuri after the mess that was his last drama, but I still wish this drama turns out good.
This drama could've been so much more exciting with a better female lead. There are so many talented actresses that don't get the chance. The male cast is pretty good though. Been a while since I saw Eom Ki-joon, so I'm looking forward to him in the drama too.

I agree he looks fantastic in this drama though i admit i liked his hair down better. to be honest for me though i don't really feel the need for a female lead in this drama at least not a love line because his wife and kid just got murdered there's no way he's going to get over that so quickly

This looks really good--I do wonder where the plot will go though. It seems unrealistic to shoot all of his scenes from inside of prison, so the question is how they'll get him out to prove his innocence.

Yuri's actually quite good at comedic roles... I don't know how she'll do in a serious crime drama but I trust uhm ki joon and ji sung to pull the bulk of the weight anyway.

Geesh, I got chills just reading the summary. Signal scared me, but I was compelled to watch it. I would watch Ji Sung read the phone book, but if this one is good I'll be watching this one through my fingers, I'm sure.

I'M SO EXCITED!!! JI SUNG VS UHM KI JOON SHOWDOWN EVERYONE!
I've only seen Uhm Ki Joon in Dream High so it's scary for me to see him act so evil when he was the sweetest character in Dream High lmao
Ji Sung getting these intense roles gives me so much life. In Secret, it was Hwang Jung Eum that was accused, and in 2017 it'll be Ji Sung rip
Curious how Yuri will look like in the drama. She was a natural in her recent webdrama, but she's jumped from a regular worker at an ad company to a defense lawyer in less than a year, so I am slightly worried if she'll be able to pull it off well. Still, we can't judge yet until her first appearance.
Is it just me or they're not hyping up this drama as much as I thought even though Ji Sung will be the lead? Or does the hype only happen like two weeks before the airing? There have been barely any stills since filming started, only snippets of the filming set. Everything's been so vague then BOOM they drop this amazing teaser. I don't know this is the first time I want to keep highly updated about a confirmed drama that hasn't aired yet.

You should see Uhm Ki Joon in Cyber Ghost. He's pretty good there as a villain.

Poor Uhm Ki joon. The last and only time I recall him being a good guy was Scent of a Woman. I wonder why he always gets stuck as the evil guy?

Omg, this actually sounds REALLY GOOD! For some reason, I'm totally excited to see Eom Ki-joon playing dual roles! Can't wait to see his acting and how he flips the switch from good guy to bad guy. On the other hand, I already feel bad for Ji-sung, but I have a feeling he's a strong fighter and he's not gonna get knocked down easily, memory intact or not. I like his hairstyle here, too! His storyline reminds me of the Remember, which I thought was intriguing from beginning to end. Will be tuning in!

Ji Sung's back! The teaser looks intense, and I'm interested to see in how the villain having a twin brother plays out. Yuri's the only unknown in this show, but the it looks amazing so far! Entertainer had heart but meandered and lacked chemistry between Hyeri and Ji Sung.
I wouldn't mind a dash of romance in here like in City Hunter, but given the murder of his wife and daughter, I can see this show staying away from it all together. Can't wait for this! Though I'm going to miss grouchy Kim Sabu.

well...if they stick solely to legal thriller genre without the mix of love lines in between yuri x ji sung, then, i dont mind. yuri is not the best but i dont think she's that horrible. just dont make her too bubbly like, because she's a public defender, not candy character... make her character like kim so yeon in Two weeks.

I read the description on Yuri's character, Seo Eun Hye. She's described as someone cold on the outside but is actually warm, and she always tries to keep up the elegant, cool image of a lawyer but it always breaks down because she's quick to get emotional in the court and ends up losing all her cases. I don't see a bubbly character for her. She sounds cool, and I'll be looking towards her development because she'll be transforming from someone who's seemingly useless, but in the end she's the only one Park Jung Woo (Ji Sung) can depend on to help prove him innocent.
I don't mind if there's romance or not, subtle hints are even better. Because the combination of a prosecutor who NEVER loses his case x a defense lawyer who ALWAYS loses her case sounds interesting to me, romantic-wise or not.

This show looks like it'll be heart-wrenching but in a good way. It also looks like Shin Rin-ah from Marriage Contract and Legend of the Blue Sea will be playing the daughter. She is a phenomenal actress at such a young age. I hope it's her cause she can wring tears out of anyone. I hope I have the strength/courage to watch cause Ji Sung and Eom Ki-joon never fail to amaze.

The teaser looks pretty good and eye-catching. I just want a straight thriller/mystery though, no romance please. :\
I haven't watched Eom Ki-joon in anything; I have only seen a few photos of him in the past. The image of him in my mind was a guy with a mustache so it was a bit of a shock to see him looking so fresh faced here. LOL I looked up his Wiki and I think his look from the drama The Virus was what I was imagining. xD

Jisung as prosecutor turned defendant on death row... Why did it reminded me of his past role as prosecutor turned devoted corporate lawyer to his noona in Royal Family? Who was on the run with her in that drama, and vanished into thin air in the end.. *sigh*
