Kim So-hyun to romance Yoo Seung-ho in MBC’s Ruler–Master of the Mask

Now, this is a lineup I can get excited about: Kim So-hyun (Bring It On, Ghost) has confirmed taking the lead role opposite Yoo Seung-ho (Remember—Son’s War) in Ruler–Master of the Mask, an MBC historical drama set to air next year.

Ruler—Master of the Mask is described as a fresh, youthful melodrama-romance, which is a descriptor that appeals to me because we’ve seen quite a number of youthful sageuk rom-coms, but not many (or any?) that take a dramatic approach. And these two actors are great choices to carry a weightier youthful melo, having shown great range of emotion and ability in their prior works, starting from their child-acting years.

The drama is set in Joseon in the 1700s and is based on true events surrounding the attempt to privatize the control of the water supply, although it will also take creative license in fictionalizing aspects of the story. (That’s a disclaimer that hardly seems necessary anymore; where once sageuks were sticklers for historical facts, now they’re mostly historical fiction.) Yoo Seung-ho plays a lonely crown prince who fights against a secret organization made up of the wealthy and powerful movers and shakers in society who want to control the water.

Kim So-hyun has been cast to play a righteous, intelligent young woman whose father is executed on Yoo Seung-ho’s orders. That spurs her on a revenge mission against him, but she’ll end up falling in love with him instead. This mortal-enemies-to-lovers setup is like drama crack to me; give it to me now.

Yoo Seung-ho and Kim So-hyun have actually been in the same drama before, although they didn’t act together: She played the child version of the heroine in the 2012 melodrama I Miss You, while he played her friend-confidante-co-conspirator in adulthood. They’ve both got plenty of sageuk experience under their belts: Kim So-hyun played the evil jealous rival in The Moon That Embraces the Sun and followed that with a turn as the evil jealous sister in Rooftop Prince. Yoo Seung-ho cut his teeth on historical dramas, and is no stranger to playing royalty: He played young kings in Legend, King and I, and Queen Seon-deok (and King of Heaven in Arang and the Magistrate, which is like half-credit). I’m pretty excited about the prospect of seeing them act together, and will be keeping a close eye on developments for this show.

Ruler–Master of the Mask is being planned as a Wednesday-Thursday drama in MBC, to air in the first half of next year.

Oh, man! I was betting on Sohyun as Bogum's next leading lady. But like others have said, that pairing can wait. And this Seungho-Sohyun pairing is *two thumbs up* I'm iffy about the synopsis tho as I think it would be hard to balance youthful and melodramatic especially when set in Joseon. And who's the team behind this? *flashback of MBC's "Scholar Who Walks the Night*

I just love how there are so many waiting for a Sohyun-Bogum pairing. I thought I was the only one after MDBC but then I saw a lot wishing for it on twitter, FB, and other forums as well. Yes, that pairing can wait because this one is good too.

I am curious who is the team behind as well. So far, I am on board with the leads, but I am scared of who will do the work behind and who the writer will be.

MDBC was a huge success not just because of the cast but also because of the immensely talented crew. Everything just came together. A talented cast won't be able to save the show if the production team fails them (see: Daebak, Scholar Who Walks the Night, Moon Lovers). I do hope the stars align for this one because I want Seung-ho and So-hyun to succeed.

No one does sageuk better than Yeo Jin-goo despite his young age. His equal would be the sageuk fairy Kim Yoo-jung.
I can not wait to see them reunite in a sageuk as adult leads. I'd die and go to heaven.

Another youthful and romance sageuk, and underage actress like there is no other talented actress in 20s. Don't want to sound so bitter although cannot help to feel disappointed, but at least teen actress who certainly can act, that's what matters. Not something that I'll look forward, but if I read the positive reviews later maybe will try to watch.

There are plenty in their 20s sera and more to be discovered.
Beside the obvious talents at the same age, Park Eun-bin (23), I think Lee Se-young (23) King's Dream and Gong Seung-yeon (23) did a decent job in SFD.

I love both leads, and I love that this won't be going for a lighthearted tone. I want it to be distinct from Moonlight despite similarities in casting and the presence of a Crown Prince as the main lead.

(This said, I can hardly imagine a happy ending for this pair given that he had her father killed. It would always come between them, no matter how they come to terms with it and their love.)

KCSC will be watching this like a hawk so kissing scenes will probably be hard to come by and skinship kept to a bare minimum. Gotta avoid those sanctions.

The only reason KCSC gave moonlight a warning was because they had too many complaints about KYJ's dressing scene and kiss scenes with PBG. I mean KSH has kiss scenes with taecyeon who is like 11 years older than her. And they didn't even care so I doubt that they would care in this drama.

That was a cable station while MBC is a public station. The board is much stricter when it comes to public broadcasting stations. There were complaints as well between Taec and Sohyun, but nothing came of it.

That, and Let's Fight Ghost was a cable drama. KCSC seems to be more lenient with cable (probably because there's less audience and therefore less people likely to complain). I expect they'll monitor Ruler to avoid viewer complaints.

KSH's kissing scenes with Ok Taecyeon only bordered 'lips-touching' and they just stayed still while their lips were connected but they didn't move while doing so. I haven't watch MDBC, so I don't know if Bo Gum and Yoo Jung were in the same line, or more than that line

Biological or not, if she was willing to get a revenge for his death, we can trust that he's precious enough to her. And this being melo, I don't doubt we might end on a sad ending, which could work for me, as long as done right.

0

I think we'll probably end with the couple separated. Or the prince giving up his throne. I find it suspicious that we still don't know which crown prince/king Seung-ho will be playing.

0

"I find it suspicious that we still don’t know which crown prince/king Seung-ho will be playing."

Based on JB's description, the control of the water supply and set in the year 1700s I think he is playing crown prince Yi San (King Jeongjo 1752-1800). He is also Prince Yeong's (Moonlight) grandfather.

If it's not him then it's Yi Sun (King Sukjong).

(If it's neither one then Hae-soo wasn't the only one sleeping through her history class lol).

I always wonder why they don't cast younger male leads, though. I think there are a few that could pull it off and who I'd actually like to see more of. (+ I'd also love to see a youth drama like this with actual youth in both main roles.)

Nevertheless, it seems like a good project for both though my feelings on the pairing run tepid for now.

I will always worry about new writers when it comes to sageuk. It's not your typical every day modern genre.
I guess it's better to start off in a fictional fusion first.
The director did Shine or Go Crazy so he is capable if he keeps it simple.

I'm guessing this is based on the visionary Crown Prince Yi-san (King Jeongjo) <3 who used his own money to create and build water supply channels for farms and turning Hwaseong region into a major agricultural producer.
(I think this region is still the biggest producer of agriculture in Korea to this day).

Well, in his defense he was following the novel but in the end like Scarlet Heart, the king marries his historical wife. Queen Daemok always win lol.

I think this is no different unless the writer will do a Moonlight ending. Toss the historical crown princess out and the crown prince became a single king (yay for fantasy Joseon).

0

Reply to 32.2.1.1.1 Kiara, below: I have no problem with the historic ending of Shine or Go Crazy (Queen Daemok rules!). I just wished there had been some point to Shin Yool/Gaebong's existence after all that drama. The ending of her particular story was unsatisfying for me, that's all (I could think of specific instances when I think her character could have gracefully made an exit, but I won't spoil it here).

another teen with a grown ass man.
I love both of them, but can producers stop relying on these girls popularity and bring the appropriate age actresses? kim jiwon (92), CHAE SOO BIN FFS (94). producers don't want to ""risk"" a leading lady not so popular as the teen girls, so they started to put them on adult roles and now this is getting even more common with their drama success. but it doesn't mean it's right imo.

some people have the impression that YSH is younger because we're watching him since he was a kid, but he's an adult. he even did his military service lol and tbh I think he looks his age perfectly. not younger or older. park min young and yoo seung ho have a 7 years gap. yoo seung ho and kim so hyun have a 6 years gap. it's not that different at all. YSH is closer, in generation, to park shin hye than kim so hyun.

I feel like a hypocrite because I liked moonlight and mirror of the witch, but I still think it was wrong to cast those girls with their leading men. I'm confused and conflicted about myself.

Don't be confused! I think it's perfectly fine to like those dramas AND those characters and still recognize the conundrum in casting teenagers with adults. They're talented actors and they do a good job after all but it's natural that there are some that are hyper-aware of who is behind those characters. And, like you pointed out in your opening lines, I do think it's about more than just finding the right young lady for the job. Here the gap in age is not the problem but the generational gap is—something you also pointed out.

Though it will always be a bit difficult to talk about since people perceive some teen years closer to "adulthood" than others, legal ages may differ from place to place, and other reasons!

I also agree that Yoo Seung Ho looks like most other 23 year olds. I mean, even though I'm a few years older than him, I feel he looks older than me LOL.

0

Required fields are marked *

yeah, there are different perspectives about being close to adulthood age and teen years and life is not black and white, but avoid putting minors with adults is a way to prevent this from happening in real life imo. and I really wanted to know if the filming schedule, for example, is made around the child laws or something like that. I doubt it. entertainment industry is already scary for adults to navigate, I can't imagine for young actors... even with their parents and all.

in the case of kentertainment, I also feel bad for a whole bunch of actresses that often ends up with second lead/supporting roles. if a drama production wants a cast to guarantee ratings (which also seems like the case here), they will always go for the young girls because they are already a strong name. it's not the girls fault at all, but it makes me sad for everybody else tbh.

it's not an easy debate at all. sorry about the essay... lol

0

Required fields are marked *

Not at all. It's always on my mind as well when this happens and it's been happening a lot this year. Later when the drama starts to air is probably when you'll see a bit more apprehension because it starts to weigh in on people that there is a romantic thorough line in the drama, lol. I too wish they would avoid it or, as I said in my other comment, cast younger actors to match. Not sure about child laws, though I would assume they have it handled.

I think it's a problem of the entertainment industry everywhere. Actors are allowed to age but actresses seem to have a shelf life unless they are particularly popular. I'm hoping that the success of actresses like Kim So Hyun and Kim Yoo Jung don't start to taper off as they hit their 20s and other younger actresses head into their teens. I think there is strong talent in the current pool of 20-something actresses and it's a shame we don't get to see them often or in more substantial roles as they seem to brushed aside by older and established, younger and established, or sometimes very green idols. And that's not to say it doesn't happen to teen male actors but definitely not as often. It's hard not to think about.

0

Think it has more to do w/ star-power than actresses in their 20s being "over-the-hill."

There are a bunch of teen actresses who have become well known from their time being child-actresses, so producers go w/ getting a "name" than hiring a lesser-known actresses in their 20s (when they can't get one of the star actresses in her 20s).

Don't have nearly the problem w/ it as long as the age-difference isn't ridiculous and things are kept pretty chaste (after all, these on the verge of adulthood actresses are probably eager to spread their wings and stop playing students or the younger version of an older character).

Ironically, it used to be pretty tough for a child actor to break out of the mold of being seen as a child actor, but these days, the transition seems to be a good bit easier for those who have the combination of star power and acting ability.

0

@bd5

This is something that the OC mentioned in their original comment (popularity) and I agreed with in my reply. I think the nature of the K-entertainment industry is to get the biggest star possible.

I'm not wanting the young actresses to be kept in a box, though. People always seem to think that, lol. More so, I worry about things getting weird. It's a saeguk, so I think things will be fine, but usually I'll probably be thinking about it all drama long. It can't be helped. I'm willing to try out MDBC before this drama and see this type of pairing in action. But on paper, I'll always be wary of it.

0

@bd5

I think it's combination of star power and raw talents. Kim Yoo-jung, Kim So-hyun, Kim Sae-ron (the 3 young Kims) and Yeo Jin-goo. They are totally amazing for their age and they are still better than most even when they are not in their best performance.

This reminds me of Moon Geun-young. Raw talents and star power back in her youth. Most of her leading men (in films) were way older than her but her talents and star power made her a box-office draw. I don't think I've seen another young actor that would top Moon's popularity back in her youth. She is still the youngest to win a daesang award in a tv drama. Her sweet and innocent image, quality acting, exemplary school record, and charitable deeds earned her the title of the nation's little sister. Now she is crossing over as a stage actor in the Korean adaptation of Romeo and Juliet which I'm dying to see.

Anyway, I'm not too worried about these young talents being paired with older actors if the age gap is reasonable with parental approval and supervision.
(Kim Yoo-jung's mom was at the Moonlight set 24/7).
Even though it's still uncomfortable since we know who is behind the character and their real age but at the end of the day, it's just a job for them, nothing more nothing less.
They are sought after for their talents and star power. I'd take that over popularity alone like most of the idol actors.

0

@Kiara

I don't have words to explain how excited and curious I'm to see this romeo/juliet. moon geun-young and park jung-min is the pairing that I never thought about before, but now that it's happening, I need to see it asap. lol

0

@jaesukisourgod

I wish I was in Korea. I'd camp outside the theatre until I get to see it lol.

0

My biggest issue is that it is that much more difficult for talented actresses in their 20s who have yet to get their big break (such as Lee Sun-bin) to get their chance at a lead role.

There are some actresses in their 20s who have the acting chops and star power, but there are probably more who have the star power minus the acting chops.

0

ngl i've been lowkey wanting a drama with PSH and YSH since they were in a music video together. thought they looked cute together.

First of all I wasn't comparing KSH vs KYJ. But KSH and YSH are a 2.0 version of the PBG and KYJ pairing since both pairings have the same age difference. It also doesn't shock me that MBC would like for the drama to have the same success that Moonlight had.

KBS had a solid sageuk team behind Moonlight. I'm not sure about MBC with this show.

My thoughts too. MDBC team knew what they were doing. Having Kang Byung Taek as the executive producer and two brilliant directors truly delivered the show. I hope we get news on who will be behind this drama. It makes me anxious.

You can check the tag "Ruler:..." in Dramabeans, it was mentioned in previous posts that this drama will be directed by the director of Two weeks/another historical drama ab Yi Seon. I'm more curious ab the writer.. And accept for the age gap of the main leads, Ruler and MDBC are totally different in genres, plot... so I think there's no point in comparing these two.. Ruler doesnt need to be as successful as MDBC because it has diferent target audience.

Dramabeans doesn't always give details on the people behind the show like executive producers, production team, music directors etc. We know who the writer and directors are.

When it comes to sageuk, I'd like to know who is running the show from behind the show. Production -Do they have sageuk experience etc etc.

I'm sure they do. I mean, which tv station doesn't want to have a successful drama like MDBC? They are nuts of they don't. All of them want their dramas to be successful and popular. It brings money in and build reputation for the casts and crew. It's all business. Look at TvN. All they do is scout and take directors and writers from other broadcasting stations and profited from them. I won't be suprised if news come out that the director and writer of MDBC will also move to TvN.
