Shopping King Louis: Episode 10

This show just continues to amaze me, the way it takes a well-used trope and flips it, completely surprising us over and over again. You never know what’s going to happen, or how Louis and Bok-shil will react when they hit a bump in the road. But one thing I believe in my heart — Louis and Bok-shil are meant to be together, and no matter what happens or what secrets are dug up, they’ll always find each other in the end.

EPISODE 10: “The Moonlight that Shines on my Heart”

On the day that Louis took Bok-shil to the beach, he had watched her, and thought that he didn’t want to hide his feelings from her. He’d said to her, “Bok-shil, I like you so much. When I think of you, my heart flutters.” He’d asked how much she likes him, but we don’t hear Bok-shil’s answer.

Louis sits with Butler Kim and talks about Bok-shil, saying how much he likes her. Butler Kim quips that Louis liked him a lot when they lived in France, and Louis jokes that Butler Kim isn’t his type, ha.

Curious about all the things he’s half-way-remembered, Louis asks if he had lots of friends, but Butler Kim says he was too overprotected to have many friends. Louis asks what he was good at and Butler Kim says he was the King of Shopping, which makes Louis smile. He asks about Koboshi, his dog, and Louis is saddened to hear that Koboshi passed away four years ago.

Butler Kim asks if Louis remembers his treasure box, the one he hid the penguin statue in when he was little. We see a flashback of Butler Kim looking for the music box, and he urges Louis, when he remembers where he hid it, to tell Butler Kim first.

He tucks Louis into bed, where Louis is adorably amazed at his “clapper” lights. Sobering, he asks if the car he was driving really was burned in the accident, and if that means that someone else died in his place. Butler Kim’s silence is all the answer he needs.

We see again Detective Joo-hyuk taking Bok-shil to the cemetery, and telling her that Bok-nam was the person who died in the crash that everyone thought killed Louis. She kneels at Louis’s grave, where her brother’s body lies, crying and saying how much she’s missed him, and promising to be good to him if he just comes back to her.

Louis goes to see Director Baek in private, curious why he pretended not to recognize him when he saw him that time in the building. Director Baek claims that since they all thought Louis was dead, he thought he was just someone who looked like him. He reminds Louis that he’s the one who found him, after all, and says that he’s no longer living as a poor man because of him. Louis doesn’t look convinced.

Ma-ri walks in, and Louis immediately remembers her from when she almost hit him with her car. She grabs him in an aggressive hug, wailing that she’s so glad he’s alive, and he asks if they were that close. Director Baek says they’ve been best friends since they were kids, but a flashback shows the truth, that Ma-ri was a little bully who would tease Louis for not having parents.

Louis is incredulous when Ma-ri says that they were more than friends, and that she was shocked when she saw him on the street. Then when she called him, he hung up on her and she was devastated. Louis remembers, but he says that he likes Bok-shil now, so she can stop lying about their relationship. HA.

In-sung and his mother take Louis’s diamond-encrusted undies to a jeweler to be appraised, and though the jeweler initially scoffs, he takes a look. He tells them the huge diamond is real, but only worth about a thousand dollars due to some scratches on the surface.

They’re thrilled anyway, and go looking around Bok-shil’s apartment for the other diamond, which has fallen off. They find a colored stone and get excited (and pfft, they think a green stone is a ruby), but it’s just a fake from the toy crown Louis likes to wear.

Joong-won worries about Bok-shil, since he learned that Bok-nam died in the crash. He runs into Louis looking for Bok-shil in the office, and tells him that she’s on a business trip. He asks Louis not to look for her, reminding Louis how he once told him that adults hide their pain so as not to cause more hurt to others.

Bok-shil sits in her apartment, recalling Joo-hyuk telling her that Bok-nam got involved with a gang, and stole Louis’s car and clothes. He’d been the one in the car when it was hit and burst into flames, and his body was burned beyond recognition. Bok-shil cries again, asking why Bok-nam would do such a terrible thing.

A knock on the door reveals Jung-ran and Grandma, here to see Bok-shil. Grandma recognizes Bok-shil right away from the time they met in Busan, and realizes that the “friend” Bok-shil spoke about then, was her own grandson Louis.

She thanks Bok-shil sincerely for taking care of Louis, but Bok-shil admits that it was her brother’s fault that Louis went through all that in the first place. At Grandma’s kind demurral, tears spring to Bok-shil’s eyes, and she says that she feels it’s so unfair that her brother died but she’s the one who has to apologize.

She insists that Bok-nam was a good boy, and Grandma pulls her into a comforting hug. She says that she knows the pain of losing your family, and tells Bok-shil to cry as much as she needs to. Bok-shil lowers her head to Grandma’s lap, and sobs.

Later, Grandma gently tells Bok-shil that it’s best if she stops seeing Louis. Seeing him will remind her of her brother, and it will hurt Louis to know that he’s causing her pain. Bok-shil says that she understands, and that she’s been too happy with Louis, unaware of her brother’s death.

Director Baek goes home that evening and announces that he’s going to let Ma-ri marry Louis. He tells Jae-sook to make it happen, then changes his mind and orders her to do nothing, not one tiny thing. HA, he’s finally figuring out how she operates.

Bok-shil takes only a small bag of her clothing, and leaves to go back to her hometown. She leaves a note for In-sung and his mother, and another on Joong-won’s desk at the office, along with her resignation letter. She asks them not to tell Louis where she is, and just sends him a short text saying that she’s going on a trip, then leaves her phone behind.

Louis is despondent, and refuses to eat because he misses Bok-shil so badly. Jung-ran says that she must be shocked that he turned out to be a chaebol, and advises him to give her time to get used to the idea. Louis doesn’t like it, but since he knows Bok-shil would want him to eat, he eventually caves.

Jae-sook invites Joong-won’s mom Young-ae for tea, and finally tells her that she’s married to the president of Gold Group. Young-ae is stunned, since her son is the director of Goldline. At that, Jae-sook says that her daughter works under him, and Young-ae realizes she’s talking about Ma-ri, who she thinks is dating Joong-won. She very nearly screams with excitement.

Jae-sook says that Director Baek wants Ma-ri to marry Louis, but she wants her daughter to marry for love. Young-ae offers up her son, and Jae-sook agrees.

Young-ae fans the flames by mentioning how Jae-sook’s husband disrespects her, especially the way he yelled at her for not finding out how Detective Joo-hyuk found her bookstore. The women decide to fix that problem, and head to the police station with edible bribes.

Joo-hyuk is unnerved at the way the ladies openly ogle him, but he sits to talk with Jae-sook. She’s so overwhelmed by his gorgeousness that she can barely speak, but she manages to thank him for finding Louis and ask how he found her bookstore. Joo-hyuk tells her about Louis’s memory notebook before she gets twitterpated all over again.

Bok-shil makes her way home, and seems bolstered by the familiar humble surroundings. She cleans up the house and finds a container left open, and wonders if someone came to the house.

Louis is miserable when Bok-shil doesn’t answer his calls, and he wonders if something more than a trip is going on. He’s not eating or sleeping, and Butler Kim is worried, so he takes Louis to Bok-shil’s apartment. Louis finds the place just as he left it, but he finds Bok-shil’s phone abandoned on a shelf.

He drags In-sung out and demands answers. He knows that In-sung knows where Bok-shil is, and whines until In-sung tells him. Louis runs back to the car, sure that Bok-shil wouldn’t just leave him for no reason, but Butler Kim stops him and offers to drive him to Bok-shil.

Bok-shil comes back from a hike to find someone sitting on her porch. HA, it’s Joong-won, looking ridiculously out-of-place. He says he came to buy wild ginseng, and imperiously demands to be fed. Bok-shil brings him a simple meal, but he refuses to eat unless she sits and eats with him.

As they eat, Bok-shil asks why he’s really here, and Joong-won says that he came to check on her. He says that he knows all about Bok-nam, and tells her to eat even if it’s difficult. Bok-shil does, fighting tears, and she softly thanks him.

After lunch, Joong-won insists on helping her around the place so she can rest. He splits his trousers so Bok-shil gets him some ajumma pants, then has to fight the threatening gigglefit when she gets a look at him.

Joong-won is well-meaning but completely inept, and he manages to snap the handle off the water pump so he has to lug water up from the river. He can’t manage to chop wood or peel ginseng either, and though he brags about how smart he is, Bok-shil mutters that he’s as useless as Louis. The mention of Louis’s name stops them both short, and Joong-won quickly changes the subject.

Joong-won and Bok-shil’s absence has the Goldline office at loose ends, wondering how to handle the flood of complaints pouring in (about the issue Ma-ri overrode Bok-shil on before). Ma-ri lets Bok-shil take the blame for the complaints, but Mr. Lee narrows his eyes at her suspiciously.

Ma-ri accidentally kicks a bag under her desk — it’s the bag of Bok-shil’s clothes that she took from Joong-won’s place. She’d thrown it away when Joong-won rejected her, but she’d gone back to retrieve it.

She decides to take the clothes to Bok-shil’s as an excuse to talk to her, and runs into In-sung on the way. He tells her that Joong-won already came looking for Bok-shil, then Louis, and he offers to take her to Bok-shil himself as an excuse to spend more time with her.

Ma-ri is taken aback when In-sung opens the driver-side door for her, saying he doesn’t have a license. But she gets in without a word, and with a nervous glance at her odd passenger, they head off.

Joong-won struggles to light a fire, so Bok-shil deftly shows him how to do it. He helps her blow on the embers, and when they burst into flame, he pats Bok-shil’s head and praises her.

They suddenly hear a voice yell, “Stop!” and look up to see Louis standing there looking furious. He strides over and punches Joong-won dead in the face, then immediately realizes what he’s done and apologizes. He’s still angry, but he controls himself.

Louis asks Bok-shil how she could just leave without saying a word, but she only says she’s sorry. Joong-won watches Louis pout that he missed her, and he pulls Louis away to help make dinner. Louis goes, but he tells Bok-shil that he wants an answer later.

Joong-won tells Louis that they’ll stay tonight then go home tomorrow, but Louis says he won’t go without Bok-shil. Joong-won tells him that staying with her will hurt her, and Louis misunderstands that he’s worried that he’ll make Bok-shil do everything for him.

In-sung gets hungry on the drive, and he and Ma-ri stop to eat. She’s amazed at the sloppy way he eats, but she dig in gamely and actually enjoys the food. They polish off four meals between them, then Ma-ri is shocked again when In-sung hands her the bill. HAHA.

Back on the road, the food upsets In-sung’s stomach, and he tells Ma-ri that he urgently needs a restroom. She makes several attempts to pull over but keeps getting cut off, as In-sung’s distress grows. He yells for her to just pull over anywhere, then suddenly he stops yelling, and a horrible stench fills the car. Oh nooo.

At bedtime Louis flops down on Bok-shil’s bed, determined to sleep near her. Joong-won makes him come to their room, and Louis puts some pain patches on his back, taking pleasure in slapping them down hard. Louis grumbles crankily that Joong-won was the same way when he was sore from working.

Both men are convinced they’re the more manly one — until Louis spots a spider near the ceiling. He squeals and points it out, and they both shriek like little girls, hee. Okay, to be fair, that’s a honking huge spider.

Grandma realizes that both Louis and Butler Kim are gone, and sends Jung-ran after them. Jung-ran finds Butler Kim waiting for Louis in the little village near Bok-shil’s home, and threatens to kill him for not answering her calls. She screams that she’s been worried, then backs up and makes like she was talking about Louis. Yeah, right.

Butler Kim physically blocks her from going to look for Louis, and when she knocks him down and scoots past him, he jumps up and grabs her in a backhug. He begs her to let Louis spend time with Bok-shil today.

Unnerved, Jung-ran asks him to let her go. Butler Kim refuses, saying that life is too short, and Jung-ran enjoys his embrace for just a moment. She throws him off and turns to face him, then beckons him closer. They share the weirdest kiss ever, as fireworks explode behind them.

That evening, Joong-won tells Louis that at times, everyone wants to hide from the world for a while. Louis says that he understands that feeling, and Joong-won tells him that Bok-shil is going through something like that right now.

Louis asks if it’s because he turned out to be the heir to Gold Group, but Joong-won says it’s not. Louis asks if Bok-shil will come back to him, but Joong-won doesn’t have an answer for that. He turns over and complains that he can’t sleep unless he’s in his own bed, but a few seconds later he’s snoring loudly.

Louis wonders out loud what will happen if that spider comes down from the ceiling, then squawks again when he sees that it’s not in its corner. It’s so cute when he does that.

Ma-ri sobs to her mother about In-sung, though she can’t even bring herself to say what he did in her car. In-sung is beside himself, and he says to his mother that he’s beginning to realize that he’s disgusting. She’s all, You’re just realizing that now?, and he goes to bed weeping and biting his fist in shame.

Bok-shil lies in bed, with Grandma’s words that being around Louis could hurt them both ringing in her head. She tosses and turns, but she can’t get to sleep.

In the morning she decides to end this once and for all, and tells Louis to disappear from her life. She says that she hates seeing his face and hearing his voice, and Louis looks at her like her words don’t make any sense to him.

He asks softly why she’s doing this, but Bok-shil just tells him not to come here again, and grabs her pack to leave. A loud, “No!” from Louis makes her stop, and he says in a sad voice, “I like you so much, Bok-shil. I want to see you and hear your voice every day. I want to be with you every day.”

His words nearly break her resolve, but Bok-shil steels herself and turns to face him. She says she’s over him so she doesn’t care how he feels, and that she’s already forgotten the moments they shared together. Somehow she manages to walk away from Louis, leaving him gasping for air.

Bok-shil walks all the way to the village before looking up. She sees a television in a shop window showing a news article on Louis’s reappearance, and all the little moments that she claimed to have forgotten rush to the forefront of her mind. She hears Louis saying her name over and over, and last, she thinks about him asking her on the beach how much she likes him.

Now she admits her true feelings, if only to herself: “Louis, even if you have nothing, if you don’t even have a name, I like you.”

Louis is subdued on teh ride back to Seoul, and he asks Joong-won if Bok-shil hated him from the beginning, or if it’s because his memory isn’t coming back so that he can’t help her find Bok-nam. Oh, that just breaks my heart. Joong-won asks if he wants to know the truth, and begins to tell Louis about Bok-nam.

But before he finishes, a motorcycle swerves close to the car, and Joong-won jerks the wheel to avoid hitting it. The motion slams Louis’s head into the car window, and images flood his mind — a group of riders on motorcycles surrounding his car, someone punching him, seeing Bok-nam standing over him as he lies on the ground.

In an instant he makes the connection from that face, to the face he’s been searching for for weeks. More memories rush back, of sitting in his car, Bok-nam in the driver’s seat. Handing Bok-nam his watch and wallet, then his clothes. Standing in the road while Bok-nam drives away.

We see the crash again, and the car bursting into flames, with Bok-nam trapped and unconscious inside. It’s unclear whether Louis actually witnessed this, but Louis understands what his sudden memories mean.

Dazed, he whispers, “Bok-nam died. He died instead of me, right?” His eyes plead with Joong-won to tell him it’s not true, but Joong-won doesn’t lie to him.

Louis starts to repeat Bok-shil’s name over and over, and he stumbles out of the car to slump against a wall. Grief overcomes him, and he sobs incoherently, fully understanding now why Bok-shil left him.

COMMENTS

Oh no, I was so hoping it was a mistake and that it wasn’t really Bok-nam who died in the crash. I suppose there’s always a tiny sliver of hope, since Dramaland rules state that nobody is truly dead until we see the body, and so far the scenes of Bok-nam dying in the car are purely speculation based on the few facts known by the characters. But as far as Louis knows, it was Bok-nam who he gave his watch and clothing to, and Bok-nam who was last seen driving the car so for now we have to work on the assumption that Bok-nam is really gone.

Once again, Shopping King Louis delivers its angst with an absolutely logical and understandable explanation. Yes, Bok-shil left Louis when she found out her brother died in his place, exactly as we all feared she would. But it’s not because she’s angry or blames him for Bok-nam’s death, and it’s certainly not because she has no more use for Louis in helping her find her brother. I think it’s partly because of what Grandma said, that seeing each other, with Bok-nam’s death between them, would be painful for both of them. But I also think it has to do with what Bok-shil told Grandma — that she’s lost her last remaining family member, and it’s utterly unfair that she lost him in a way that makes her feel guilty and responsible for what happened to Louis. Since we’re watching a drama, we know that there’s probably more to it, and that it’s possible that Bok-nam had a good reason for what he did. But as far as Bok-shil knows, her brother died a thief and a thug, and that his actions directly caused Louis’s accident and amnesia. She’s got to be feeling some pretty awful things right now, and stepping away from Louis makes complete sense.

How much do I love this show for tipping all of the expected drama tropes on their ears? Bok-shil is in no way falling prey to Noble Idiocy, because her reasons for sending Louis away are as selfish as they are selfless. And I fully expected Louis’s family to reject Bok-shil once they got Louis back, and to try to keep them apart. But instead, Grandma makes a special trip to thank Bok-shil for taking care of her Precious, and even comforted her in her grief of losing the only family she had left. I truly believe that Grandma asking Bok-shil to stay away from Louis was an act of love, as she didn’t want to see either of them in any more pain than necessary. She doesn’t know how Louis and Bok-shil love and need each other, more than even Bok-nam’s death can affect. As I’ve said before, it’s really refreshing to see a show that uses all of the same drama tropes we’ve seen so many times, but use them in a way that is not only interesting, but also makes complete narrative sense without branding anyone a villain.

I really have to commend the show for knowing where its strengths are, and playing them to the hilt. It would have made complete sense, twice now before this episode, to have Louis and Bok-shil separated by events out of their control. Yet each time they’re almost immediately drawn back to each other, so we never lose that magical thing that’s between them and keeps us all coming back for more. I really hope this continues, and that Bok-shil’s telling Louis to leave doesn’t last long, because it’s been proven twice now that the show doesn’t need to keep its main couple apart to give us plenty of dramatic tension. Major respect to rookie writer Oh Ji-young, for (so far) doing just about everything right.

And I have a feeling we haven’t even scratched the surface of the secrets in Louis’s past. There’s still the whole question of how he got amnesia in the first place, and the significance of the penguin music box. I want so much to unabashedly love Butler Kim, but I’m worried about his interest in the treasure box, and why he wants Louis to tell him first when he remembers where it is. We also still don’t know why Louis’s dog Koboshi keeps coming up in conversation, and how, as a child, Louis named his dog a name that sounds so much like “Go Bok-shil.” As we get closer to discovering the answers, I suspect that we’re about to be taken on a wild ride, with twists and turns we don’t even see coming. But I trust that the show won’t stop giving us all the crazy, sweet, and wonderfully entertaining moments that we’ve grown to love about Louis and Bok-shil’s wacky, insane, beautiful world.

BOK-NAM is ALIVE! At least according to the writer, who is the “King of Subtle Clues”. And there is a gem of a clue in episode 10. At approximately minute 28, Bok-Sil has returned to her mountain home and finds a jar in the kitchen has been opened and the contents gone. She is surprised by this. She even states, “Did someone stop by?”. Thank goodness we know that it means that Bok-Nam is alive and in hiding. He has been back to their mountain home and gotten something from that kitchen jar. No worries, there will be an uber happy ending.

NOTE: Do not be fooled because Bok-Nam is now shown in the crash video. When Louis was believed to be the victim, he was shown in that same video clip. The crash video clip shows the currently accepted victim and should not be considered proof.

I agree. BN is not dead n he did went back to the house at the countryside !! This is afterall a rom-com so I trust that it will have a happy ending though inevitable angst would be experienced in the midst of the plot.

Exactly, that crash scene showing the victim is misleading (again). And even if the victim should be Bok-nam he'd not be wearing that track suit since Louis has it. Show, you ain't gonna fool us beanies! Hmpf.

Yes! the track suit! When I saw it at first, I had to go back to confirm, the flashback shows Bok-nam in his track suit, which makes no sense, for a second I thought "loop whole" but then it hit me, it is not really a flash back, is just imagination filling in the gaps!

I concur. At first I thought the track suit Bok-nam is seen wearing in the crash scene may have been poor continuity on behalf of the show (and really it is if you want us to believe for now that he is actually well and truly dead). But, with Bok-shil's finding of open lid of food, I am positive he is alive!!!

I agree with the jar, but shouldn't he be wearing the tracksuit? because Louis's legit one got switched for the knock-off

Yes, that's what I'm thinking.

Also the sequence of scenes is off for him to actually be wearing it. He's wearing it in the street after Louis was attacked.

He's wearing it in the car when he asked for Louis watch, wallet and clothes.

Louis is holding it when he's standing mostly nekkid beside the road.

There's a break in scenes before the car drives off. Bok Nam had been in the drivers seat when asking Louis for his stuff, but we don't know whether he was still in the drivers seat when the car drove away.

When the truck hits the car there's a shot from the drivers side toward the truck. It shows all the windows being blown out. The 'flashback' of Bok Nam dead in the car shows that the window was still intact.

SPOILER ALERT. Pause at 59:22 and 59:23. I think those shots show what happened. (Let's not say what is shown... Don't want to be accidentally spoiler-ish to those who don't want to know.)

Absolutely. The open container is officially a Clue. Or an especially mean misdirect. But I still vote for the former.

Also, she opened the rice pot, smelled it, and made a "that's odd" face right after she found the open jar. Like it might have been used recently or something.

Aranea, that's what I thought too, not when I watched it, but when I read Lollipip's recap. I think you're right, it's a subtle hint that the writer skillfully interjects.

I also keep coming back to the many times Louis tells her he'll help her find Bok Nam, and to trust him. I don't think those will be wasted.

Idk if I'm willing to give the writing as much credit as you are LollyPip. At least for this particular episode. The angst felt far more contrived to me than I care for (the whole episode I just wanted someone to tell Louis why Bok Shil was upset). But as long as it does it job and then leaves, preferably as swiftly as possible, I'm okay with it!

I am worried about one of the things that was shown in the preview, but I also have faith that it'll be another opportunity for the writer to surprise us.

You only have six episodes left show! Don't fail us now!

Referencing the previews for the next episode is uncalled for. If your assertion can not stand based on the information presented in the current episode, then you should reconsider making it. In addition, previews are often intentionally deceptive. A good PD will use them in conjunction with the closing cliff hanger to boost tension.

Louis family always overprotect him, treat him like a kid. That's why he stays so innocent at an adult age. I can't agree with grandma' way to hide things from Louis. Come on! He's 25, not 5, let him deal with it. He needs grow up and learn to how to suck up the pains as an adult.

Agree
Grandma overprotective and kinda dictating what should they do in every problem

Yes I know he loves Louis, and her sympathy/empathy for bokshil is true. But her action is not right, imo

And I agree with Jongwoon when he said adult must hide their pain. Yes he's right, we can't whine everytime we have a problem like a kid. But sometimes we must show it/say it aloud, if not you can trap in term of noble idiocy

I agree, I found myself getting angry with everyone that wouldn't just tell Louie what was going on. I also take issue with the continued treatment of Louie by his grandma/family. Protecting someone from pain sounds like you're doing them a favour, but resilience is important. Overcoming pain and learning how to deal with it is a life skill.

The fact that Bok Shil and Louie are both in pain now doesn't mean that they're in pain forever. They need to deal with it to move on. Grandma isn't doing Louie any favors, just like keeping him locked up in a gilded cage for most of his life prevented him from growing up properly (I can't tell you how mad I got imagining myself in his place - pretty sure I would've resulted to violence if people wouldn't let me leave my own home when I wanted). Glad that Louie keeps pushing past the contrived limitations set on him by his family.

Agree, it doesn't mean that the pain and problem will go away if they don't tell him what's going on/what's wrong with their rs now....it's like behaving like an ostrich during a problem except that he doesn't even know what is the problem till the end of this episode....over-protective family is what they have done to him, so he remained so naive like a kid and couldn't handle difficulties, but his beloved BS and In Sung hyung has taught him the hard way of life and reality and that life isn't a bed of roses just like what he has had during his 25 years of life....

I was honestly frustrated with Grandma's. I was waiting for her to add "you two need some space" or "you need time to heal". But no, she made it sound like they need to be separated forever. And now, her advice is reinforcing Bok-sil thoughts of leaving Louis.

However I was only a little frustrated with anyone for not telling anyone about Bok-sil. The show has constantly showed us that these characters will eventually tell what they're feeling or there problems. I knew that someone will surely tell Louis in this episode. And someone did.

Butler Kim was kept under orders from Grandma but he did eventually help Louis and even stopped Jung-ran from interferring. In-sung told where Bok-sil is. And Joong-won, who I believe did not tell Louis out of respect of Bok-sil, eventually caved from Louis's sad puppy face.

You know, I always thought Kim Soo-Hyun had a beautiful crying face, but when Louis started breaking down at the end of the episode, that was absolutely heart-wrenching to watch. The way he acted, you could almost feel the air being removed from his lungs.

I agree 100%. That last scene was absolutely devastating to watch. I know I shouldn't be surprised by Seo in Guk's brilliant acting anymore, but he still manages to take my breath away (or in this case, cry along with him). His eyes teared up so fast and he looked so broken. This one big realization is going to make Louie do what everyone is so obsessed with making him do: grow up.

So feel you here.

For me, the emotional intensity was that I could feel Louis' pain at that moment of realisation was for Bok Sil - I.e. his first reaction was understanding what the loss of the Bok Nam would do to her rather than his own wound.

His acting has been so on point all series. He has kept a character that could have so easily become grating and annoying to one of love and empathy. The last scene was a step up from his high standard...Seeing the air ripped from his lugs as he felt her pain.

Normally I am wary of watching episodes where there is angst but this show kept me interested. Seo in guk is so beautiful. Him crying in the last scene combined with the OST really broke my heart for him.
I do think Bok Nam is alive because of the jar scene. Also I love the Ahjumma who has a crush on the police officer. She's so sweet and funny lol.
All the characters are so interesting in this show. Mary despite her scheming self ends up bringing comedy all the time. Even the second lead is taking care of not only the lead girl but also the lead guy. Also please Butler don't turn out to be evil and just focus on your romance :3

This episode was so sad with Bok Shil's discovering the fate of her brother and telling Louis to disappear from her life. I agree though that I think dear younger bro is hiding out and is not dead.
Poor In Sung! I don't think he's disgusting.. He was hilarious!I think Ma Ri and him make the best funny couple in this drama.
I like the bromance with Joong Won and Louis. Louis gave him such a punch because he was jealous although he wasn't fully aware of his emotions. Also, I loved the spider scene. I'm afraid of spiders..that was huge ! I would have scream my head off too. So funny.

2. I LOL so hard for all comedy moments/scenes, especially when Insung realized he is disgusting, and the bgm comes up.. Hahaha Lmao
I feel guilty to laugh when this episode supossed to be full of angst.. Haha

3. 51% for boknam is alive. The opened jar is the proof. Boknam is hiding. I think something must happened between the last time boknam-louis encounter and the accident

I thought I laughed the biggest laugh when Louis saw the spider but when he looked up again and saw it gone and wondered where it was, I laughed so hard I had to pause and rewind to catch up with what followed. My daughter and I have had the very SAME reaction when we've stayed or lived in places with spiders. It's hysterical!
I've always loved Seo In-Guk and tend to watch his Seasons of the Heart video at least twice a week, but now I think he is so utterly brilliant that I'm stunned and amazed to find him at the very top of my favorite actors (and there are a bunch). Thanks so much for the recap. It's always good to see another person's perspective. One thing I can't quite understand. In Sung seems to have certain street smarts, at least compared to Louis and Bok Shil, and yet he acted totally obliviously to Ma Ri. I mean if I was trying to impress (actually not look too bad) in her eyes, I'd be a bit less obnoxious about things. I would say, oh, I don't have insurance to drive or something, since I don't have a car.

And then at lunch I'd not order tons of food, knowing that it's not polite and knowing how slender Ma-ri is, I'd just eat a little bit, since I don't have any money. But instead he just makes himself look worse and worse. I wonder if Louis has rubbed off on him in a bad way, LOL.

Afterwards at home the subtitles I got seemed to hint that he was biting his fist because he was still having discomfort from his stomach. I like Loly's interpretation that he's just ashamed of his action (and that's a really bad action to have on a first date or lunch or whatever).

Required fields are marked *

InSung has this feel of having yet not really having street smarts LOL it comes out pretty clearly in the scenes with Mari eh? InSung was definitely ashamed of his actions when talking to his mom at the end HAHA

The fist in the mouth scene too is a nod to his character name. It's used to be a pretty common parody of JoInSung's in the drama, What Happened in Bali. People used to put their fist in their mouth while crying on variety shows to parody JoInSung, but when I saw some of the comments not realizing the parody aspect of it I feel like a super old kdrama geek LOL

I found the clip and linked it below! While trying to find it, I realized JoInSung never really put his fist in his mouth while crying but maybe it's just been exaggerated over time? LOL

Thanks for the recap LolliPip!

Since i had to go for early voting (stuck in line for 1 1/2 hrs in the hot TX sun) - i didn't have to go far home to watch this episode - so NO SPEEDING for me yesterday!

Sad to see BS grieving for her brother and then having to separate from L.

What was the purpose the drama for making In Sung experience such an embarrassing situation with MaRi in the car?

The 2 mothers (Joo seok n Young-Ae) interaction are funny and Joo Seok fangirling at the police station was too much, ajummah!

I laughed out loud at JW's 'fish-out-of-water' experiences in the countryside - especially when he keeled over after taking water from the (raging) river (instead of the stream that BS called it).

What is the name of the (Mandarin?) song that was the theme of this episode? It was lovely.

Finally MONSTA uploaded their OST - including the acoustic version. Out of all the OST - i enjoyed this the most! Have to download after tonight's episode.

My heart breaks for both L and BS - hope they find their way back to each other and HURRAY(!) for JW - he is such a good mentor to BOTH of them - he so sweet - we have to find a worthy character to pair off with him - don't think MaRi is worthy of him.

Re: Mandarin song
It's called "The Moon Represents My Heart" (月亮代表我的心) by Teresa Teng. It's probably one of the (if not the) most famous Chinese song out there. Don't think there's one Chinese speaking person who doesn't know it and it feels like every foreign student who learns Chinese has to learn this song as well. lol

I wanna kiss the music director. Never in my wildest dreams have I thought I'd hear a Teresa Teng song in a kdrama. ?

Could it be because Hong Jin Young recently released her Korean language version of this song and then also released her Chinese language version of this song in China? Could it be the music director's hint that some songs should never be covered?

No, that scene and song is an homage to Comrades, Almost a Love Story with Leon Lai and Maggie Cheung. A lot of Teresa Teng's songs were in that film because the setting was during the time she was at the height of her career.

I won't spoil the ending to Comrades, Almost a Love Story, but it wasn't an exact replica here, unfortunately.

I like the individual songs, but WTF with the song choice when Bok Shil was crying at her brother's grave?? I don't speak Korean so I don't know if the lyrics are somehow appropriate, but it's got such an upbeat and peppy feel. It sounds like there are two versions of the song (Tiger Moth by Monsta) and while one version is more low key and possibly acoustic, the version played in the scene is an upbeat, dance version. WHY??? It totally took me out of the scene.

You wrote:
Bok-shil is in no way falling prey to Noble Idiocy, because her reasons for sending Louis away are as selfish as they are selfless.

I strongly disagree. It's noble idiocy all right. Because she chooses to keep to herself the reasons why she is doing that, and she chooses to lie to him she hates him and has forgotten him, making a choice for him, thinking that she knows better his own good, without giving him the option to discuss and to find the best way together.
Telling him frankly "You know, I have trouble being beside you right now, because I have to sort out my feelings. I feel this and that, and it makes me upset, so give me some time alone and then we'll talk again. Don't contact me, I will contact you when I'm ready to talk about this".
How difficult is that? This is something he can accept, even if he's not sure that they will get back together.

As for the grandmother. Again, she is deciding what is best for the two young people in their place, and dictating what they should do. And Bok-Sil falls for it, and lets herself be influenced, before she had the chance to think about it herself and see how she feels about being besides Louis.
And don't be fooled by the hugging and patting. It's "Yes, I understand your feelings, I pity you, but... stay away from my heir grandson, you undeserving poor villager".
Little different than the mother in Secret Garden, who knelt before the girl begging her to leave her son but was bitchy anyway when this didn't work.

So yes, everybody is acting like in a typical k-drama. I am very disappointed at the writers.
Add to it the fact that Mr Choi chooses not to tell Louis the truth before leaving that place. If Louis knew, he could have talked about it with her. But Mr Choi (maybe for his own selfish reasons) prefers to let the misunderstanding in place, hoping that this will help even more in separating them completely. Which makes him into a hateful character, when we were just beginning to like him.

In this episode, I also strongly disliked the story line with Ma Ri and the ugly comic. Did he really think that even if he hadn't pooped in the car he would have a chance with that educated, rich beauty?
I hope the writers don't want to push that ship. And the poop incident was really really unnecessary.

Agreed. The writing for this episode isn't anything out of the box or tossing tropes by the wayside. I thought Bok-sil's actions were noble idiocy. The only person who acted according to his character is Louis, whose final, tearful realization did a number on me. I hope he doesn't stay away from her either, can't wait for next episode. I watch this show for the kittens, and without them together, it takes away all of the charm.

This was my least favorite episode. It was so out of character for her to not be forthright with Louis. I understand her being hurt and upset with her brothers death. BUT, why wouldn't she just tell him "my brother died, it's hard being with you without being constantly reminded of him yada yada..." No, she goes all cold and pulls the "I don't like you" card. Pretty sure you do like him regardless of the situation. I feel that she never would have had these thoughts if overprotective gradma hadn't put the thought in her head. It's like Bok-shil thinks that is how she should be feeling even if she may not actually be. And again, WHY WOULD YOU NOT JUST TELL LOUIS THE FREAKING TRUTH? No matter what she says he will be hurt anyways and it's not like he won't find out from another source (which he did). Noble idiocy is dumb dumb dumb. You are not helping yourself or Louis by pushing him away in this manner. This episode was so so so frustrating. First mistep this show has taken. LET THE TRUTH PREVAIL!!

The "nobles" in kdrama-land are people like Louie & Grandmother. So technically what Bok-shil did was "peasant idiocy". Doesn't have the same ring, but can me make that a thing anyway?

0

Required fields are marked *

I agree that she probably should have told him something, and I was also frustrated that everyone somehow decided not to tell Louis.

Even so, I'm not sure if she's being a wholehearted noble idiot, so to speak. She just found out her brother, her little BABY brother, is dead. She has no family left. I don't know what I would do in that situation, but I wouldn't be surprised if I did things that were out of character or that were completely irrational.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is that although her actions fit the bill for noble idiocy, I'm not convinced she's trying to be noble or selfless. I think she's grieving and trying to make sense of life without her brother. For her, that means going back to life before Louis. I interpreted her move back home as her attempt to go back to the last place and time when everything was normal and made sense. A place where she feels confident and sure in her work, where she might be able to be whole again.

Also, she's always been gullible, so I'm not at all surprised that she took Grandma's words to heart. Ugh I'd rather not talk about that scene.... -_-

GRANDMA HATERS UNITE!
No threats were made, no envelopes were exchanged and no guys in black suits were present. Grandma listened, offered words of comfort, held her hands gently and embraced her warmly patting her back. Grandma that condescending devil!

Does it make you feel good to bash a rich, over-protective elderly woman for trying to comfort and help Bok-Sil? The writer has established grandma as a kind, loving, but very over-protective person. Her only real flaw is that she sheltered Louis too much. She still sees him as a fragile child unable to face any hardship.

The emotional comfort that she offers Bok-Sil is 1000% sincere. She knows the pain of losing loved ones. The advice she gives is the BEST she is capable of giving. Is it the best advice for Louis and Bok-Sil? The answer is a resounding no! She sincerely believes that she is helping them. So does that mean that Grandma can only be a "good" character if she gives good advice? Using that yard stick is even Louis a "good" character?

The most confusing sentence in your post was that Grandma was like the mother from Secret Garden. Unfortunately, if you choose to see her that way then my reply is lost on you. It is probably better to just agree to disagree.

0

Required fields are marked *

It may have been frustrating to watch, but I don't think it was noble idiocy. Bok-shil trusts people easily, so that may be why she followed Grandma's advice.

I personally believe it is difficult for her to let Louis know how she feels. Don't forget she's not only grieving for the lost of her only family member, but she is also feeling guilty for what she believes her brother did - stealing Louis clothes and car and is the reason Louis has amnesia. She has conflicting emotions. She was clear about it when she told Grandma that she thought it was unfair that she has to apologise for what her brother had done when her brother is the one that ended up dead. Her brother is dead because of Louis, but Louis has amnesia because of her brother. Would you honestly be able to say all those things, discuss it with the one you like whilst you are grieving and feeling guilty at the same time? I definitely wouldn't.

I can feel the pain and the angst in this thread, you guys. It convinces me that the writer succesfully delivered the intent, albeit not so creatively or so it seems. It is somewhat refreshing that even though we have not-so-typical kdrama characters, they're deciding typically anyway. It's possibly done for plot movement, also possibly trying to stay true to the concept of "recycling" typical drama tropes. I do expect complete flipping in the coming episodes. It could have been an "i'm glad we're over this point" thing for the writer.

anyway, see you guys again on the ep11 recap. *winku *winku

I don't think that was grandma's intent. She never seemed like someone who would care about the status of Louie's girlfriend. Since Louie is her only bloodline and she almost lost him once, I think she cares about his happiness first and foremost and wouldn't be that shallow.

I understand you, but I don´t think like that.

HOW Bok Shil phrased herself was too harsh, cause Louis is way too kind and sweet to deserve it. But maybe on an impulse, she was more cruel than intended. Yes, maybe she should have been honest - but that would include sharing what she knows to be the truth. It is not something easy to spill.

I do see the positive side of Grannys´ actions. she wasn´t referring to Bok Shils´ background or anything, but she genuinly seems to be worried they will feel anguish if they see each other. She is not necessarily right. Maybe she is just a hypersensitive person.

the only one I want to smack over the head is the detective, but I am afraid of his fangirls.

DON’T CRY PUPPY!!!!!

Gah….our Louis and BokShil really know how to tug at my heartstrings. They seriously can cry so heartbreakingly :( with Louis at the realization that BokNam (may) have died on his behalf and BokShil when she was telling Louis to leave.. (the welling of her eyes woww) and getting consoled by Grandma.

Despite it being an angsty episode, and potential for more angst in Thursday’s episode (NOOOO) there were so many moments where I really did laugh out loud

1. Louis underwear makes a comeback!!!
2. Mr. Lee and his love for Louis
3. InSung and Mari moments LOL especially at the poop scene complete with flies CG AHAHAHAHA
4. InSung’s Jo InSung parody with the fist in his mouth (they even played What Happened in Bali's OST!!!)
5. The two moms and their weird but air-headed chemistry
6. Lovesick puppy! As angsty as it was Louis eating because BokShil wouldn’t like it if he didn’t
7. I don’t know why… but I laughed SO hard throughout the Butler Kim and Personal Assistant’s kiss scene

I also have to disagree that BokShil leaving was noble idiocy :( but I also agree that it's not a full blown noble idiocy because at least Grandma was looking out for the both of them and not just her grandson. It was also more digestible because of the similarities between Grandma and BokShil. Both have this wise aura to them perhaps coming from losing so many people in their lives. They have a connection with the yearning for loved ones that I couldn’t help but feel which made the conversation about BokShil and Louis' relationship needing some time apart more palatable. Also, Grandma doesn't give an ultimatum either. She says "seeing each other may be hurtful for the both them" and that "may" I think shows that Grandma will be ok with them together if the brother situation can be overcom.

I also have FULL faith that BokNam ISN’T dead because of that scene where BokShil notices an open jar. I was semi-stumbled with the flashback scene because we were all thinking that BokNam couldn’t have driven the car BUT I SEE YOU WRITER-NIM! Thank you for the reassurance!!!

i switched this episode on and off, on and off, at times it was so heartbreaking, and I can´t see Bok Shil cry cause it is such a stark contrast to her smile, really like day and night. And then I was all giggles suddenly, feeling like the Most Bipolar Person... Despite the temporary angst, this show has moments that just melt you: the way Bok Shil cried in Granny´s lap and the way the secretary empathized on the side, and Joong Won and Louis´ moments in Bok Shils´ house.

I found it extremely unecessary to hurt Louis with words like Disappear and I hate you - after how sweet and caring he is? Even as a lie he doesnt deserve it. But as angry as I was, in this case, Bok Shil cannot think of any other way to keep her distance from Louis - no matter what else she says, it wouldnt matter to Louis.

I think everyone who is wary of the villains should watch this drama especially, cause I can´t believe how they keep dipping the uncle into an ice pit, sort of said. His wife is either a genius or a total goosehead! I´m dead.

Most favorite part was the discrepancy of fangirls: when your friend doesnt love your bias as much as you do and sees all the flaws, while you just see the golden glow. khmm... yeah... that... kind of hits home a lot.

and Louis being as blunt as ever turning down Mari - not that she is any threat now that mothers are at it.

so despite feeling slightly depressed that there had to be angst at all, I try to focus on the postive, and when you look you find.

I totally agree with you on the feeling slightly depressed with the angst. Even if we do feel a bit bipolar, I'm just thankful that we have those well-made comedic moments that lets us focus on the positives instead of the negatives.

With all the positive energy I got from them for the previous 9 episodes I think I've become a bit optimistic and would just like to think of it as a growing experience for the both of them. BokShil has always been the head-of-the-household type of character whether it was with her brother and grandma in the country side or in the little apartment rooftop with Louis. Now instead of working and living to feed and take care of someone else, she will be working and living to take care of herself. Louis on the other hand, is learning a rather larger lesson of maturing and being responsible even if it's not directly his fault. Now knowing that he may have an indirect hand into BokNam's (possible) death, but still wanting to love on BokShil... I wonder how that will play out for his growth but it will be inevitable.

I may have rose-colored glasses on but I really love this drama

Thanks Lollypip :)

I could say I said so, but so could many other people. I had trusted the writers to not let us down when angst came in, and they proved all of us right. Yes there was angst but there were adorable moments. Yes, this episode made me cry, but it also made me laugh out loud. Yes, Bok Shil and Louie were forced to part, but the writers made up for it with plenty of cuteness (from Louie) and delving deeper into a character’s POV (Bok Shil became more understandable).

My fav moments
1. The ajhumma fan club!

2. All the animations (tail and ears for Louie and the message thrown as a rock at the police station)- they are so cute w/o being distracting

3. Mr. Cha doing so much work for Bok Shil- he is quite similar to Louie. (or special edition ‘Louie Mini’ with a prominent throat problem)

4. Butler Kim and Jung Ran’s kiss!

5. When Bok Shil talks about how much she loves Louie. Oh man! The feels! Plus we never got to overtly see her love for him. Till now, it seemed almost like she took care of him as one would take care of family.

My least favourite part- seeing Bok Shil and Louie crying! Now, if that is not heart-breaking then I dunno what is! But I guess this is the power of this show- even while my heart bleeds for them, I know it is an important part of the story and don’t want a show without it. It also provides catharsis. I laugh and cry with the characters and I feel lighter after each episode.

Also did any one else feel a little suspicious of Butler Kim when he told Louie to tell him first when he remembers his treasure box? There must be sth important in that box which is somehow related to whatever happened 30 years ago. And I guess the show gave us as good a hint as any that Bok Nam is alive (the lid on top op that pot).

Anyway, Thank You Show. I am now ready for even more angst. Just make sure our Louie and Bok Shil do not change their innate beauty. I would accept anything else but that!

I have seen suspicion of Butler Kim coming up from time to time in the comments, but I personally have never felt any villain-like characteristics from Butler Kim.

The treasure box does seem very important and I am assured that it will come out again, but when Butler Kim was talking to Louis about it, it didn't seem like he had an ulterior villainy motive. I have full trust in our Robot Butler Kim! Let's hope it stays that way LOL

I don't know if I'm ready for more angst as you are but I'm trusting in our BokShil and Louis! If anything is reassurance is that kdramas (usually) never fail in keeping our OTPs together ;)

Reading the comments, it seems like many people didn't like the angst. For me, it was a diluted form of angst cuz the writers still managed to give us so many hilarious moments!

Speaking of that, I forgot to mention Louie and Ma Ri's childhood scenes. I loved how they kept saying that they were best friends but the reality was quite different. Louie is still so much like his kid counterpart!

I would go further, I don't trust any of the characters in Grandmas sphere (except Oska). There are too many questions in everyones motives (all the way back to Louis' parents death).

The story is littered with so many clues and red herrings it is hard to see the overall picture clearly yet. I am watching out for the treasure box, and bookshop to be the keys to the final outcome.

Maybe the hidden treasure box will reveal why Louis' parents died suddenly when he was a kid ?? I have full trust that Butler Kim is a good person too, but I'm still don't know to whom he was calling to report on Louis' whereabouts on the phone in the earlier episodes...

Got a question that has been plaguing me the last week and need fellow beanies to help out.

If Director Baek is Ms Choi's son - doesn't that make MaRi her grand-daughter?

If so - doesn't that make Louie and MaRi (first) cousins?

I don't believe that Director Baek is Ms Choi's son but rather a family friend of sorts that has helped build up the company. I may have to rewatch previous episodes, but Director Baek may be a close friend of Louis' parents which may be why Jae-Sook calls Ms Choi, "mother".

oh - Thanks! With everyone calling Ms Choi ommini - my first impression was that they were mother and son/daughter-in-law - but it may have been just a polite form of addressing by the Baeks.

I plan to marathon this series after it ends so that i can see the WHOLE plot in one shot and see what i might have missed as the series was airing (there were times when the video was buffering and i know i missed somethings).

Yeahhh I was a bit confused in the beginning too but I figured if Grandma's blood related family all died except Louis the Baeks couldn't be blood relatives. So interesting that in Korean culture you can call the ajumma thst serves you food "eemo" or aunt even if you never met before

I plan to rewatch the whole series too!! Sighsss what will we do without our puppies!!!!

I cried and laughed so much this episode. Angst, angst go away. You are ruining my Happy Place!

I don't think Bok Shil is being a Noble Idiot. For one simple reason. She doesn't want Louis to feel the pain she feels so she left and pushed him away. That's who she is as a character though. She has been shouldering everything and thinking of others throughout the whole serie. She wouldn't want Louis to feel like her brother's "death" is his fault. If her character wasn't that type of person then I would agree the show is using an overdone trope for no reason but they aren't. They're keeping true to her character.

Also, I noticed the jar scene so I think Bok Nam is alive too. I've been thinking for a while now that something happened that night to make him run away. He is more than likely still alive.

Agree. We see at the end of the episode that when he did realize Boknam died in his place, it really really broke Louis's heart. That's what Bokshil was trying to save him from.

I don't get the reference but yeah the dude is pretty hot. I looked up his list of work and I was disappointed he hasn't really done more leading roles. I wonder why?

I must be the only one who doesnt find him handsome. there is just something weird about the proportions of his face for me. I only find the fangirl phenomena funny.

0

But i guess more opportunities would come knocking on his doors after this.. There are so many actors these days that only come to know for their acting after appearing in "notable work".. I think Kim Min Seok is one of them after appearing in DOTS..

Its not a bad thing though, at least i find them to be more down to earth and thats probably what u need to last ur entire career in the industry..

Dreamy detective needs to be a lead or second lead in his next drama. Oh, oh, let's have a Kim Ji Hoon (lead) and Smokin' detective (second lead), with a little smexy secretary (from Cinderella & 4 Knights) thrown in for good measure.

Oh, I so LOVE the writer.

It took until episode 9 to see this was a reworking of Wizard of Oz.
* Bok Sil as Dorothy - Finding home (a family)
* Louis - finding his brain
* In Sung - Finding courage - even with lions mane hair do
* Oska - finding a heart

It is even complete with the The lollypop guild in their fantasy office, the red version of the yellow brick road, and all four witches.

After watching this episode I had great fear that it was Louis that organised the switch with the brother (I could not face this sweet drama having to deal with that much impending pain) I woke this morning realising the whole story hinges on the mysterious BOOKSHOP. My sleep memory had pulled all the mentions of the bookshop from across the 10 episodes.

This writer has been great at laying clues in ways that are either innocent or sinister (but misread at the time) all the way through.

This is testament to Ji Young's writing ability...to layout the story arcs from the very beginning and plot the trajectories across the 16 episodes.

It is also a treat to see a drama where the action is wholly generated out of /and embedded within the scenario established in the set up. (i.e. without being artificial manufactured to revive a lagging story).

I know this last point sounds basic ...but think...how many dramas are able to do this. For me it tends to be a very short list containing the classic dramas.

Wowwwwwww I LOVE this!!! I would have never even imagined a link to the Wizard of Oz if my life depended on it. I love your insight into this! Let's add Louis to double as Toto hehe a perfect fit for our puppy ?

I also agree that the bookshop may be a key element and I would like to add that the penguin, treaure chest, and Koboshi may have something to do with something big that the writer has been planning for us this entire time. With the mention of these things and no real reason, I trust they all play a part in the bigger picture of what's to come ?

Agreed. The Louis crossover with Toto is so funny.

I think there is enough for a doctoral thesis in this show.

When Bok Sil finds Louis, his hair is straight and spiky straw wearing borrowed clothes. I alway notice when his hair changes from puppy wavy to straighter (scarecrow) and where this aligns with the plot or character emotion.

"Oska's" outfits are jarringly mono material (particularly some of the suits) and his tinted glasses are analogous to the green glasses to be worn in the Wizard of Oz's Emerald City. Moreover, "Oska" story of a single man with no women is hilarious as his parents freak out.

In Sung's acting reverts so regularly to cowardly lion-esque its a joy to watch.

I get bokshil not wanting to be with louis for a while because of his brother. 100%. but the moment the show needed to give me a scene where his grandma was the one suggesting they should be apart and the fact that BS never told the truth of her feelings and told him things that we all know are lies, the show lost me for this episode. for me, it was just the usual tropes all over again.

this show shines when our main couple is together. the second lead, the comic reliefs, their angst never really worked for me and this episode only made me realize it once again. I hope they're not kept apart for too long tbh.

She cares for Louis.. Which is why she decided to leave him, she dont want him to be the one to feel bad.. She would rather be the one suffering..

Grandma is just too overprotected and she thinks that its better that way so both dont have to be reminded of the sad past.. But i think Bok-shi dont really blame Louis for her brother death after all its an accident that they know of currently.. and her brother was in the wrong anyway..

She struggled a lot too in making that cut and Louis is everywhere in her mind.. Im quite pleased it work out that way rather than Bok-shi just blamed Louis for her brother death indirectly in place of him..

Definitely love the way that tropes are used and almost reclaimed in a realistic way in this drama!

Thought with Bok Shil's "I don't like you" speech: it was sad but it reminded me of the quintessential found dog movie scene like in Air Bud where the little boy yells at the dog that he hates him and makes the dog run away.
(While on the subject, puppy Louie is just about the cutest, heart-meltiest person I have ever seen)

As has been said above, besides the fact that this is rom-com and we can guess what to expect as an ending, I do somehow have faith that this innocent love will come back together - the two of them care so much for each other, especially in living together, there is a closeness that is closer than just romantic love, it is a familial love in a way... sorry not super grammatical here (long day whew). And in the end, I think that is why I really enjoy and love this drama - it is first and foremost about family. The vulnerability Bok Shil showed to Louie's grandma hit me so deeply because everything started when Bok Shil's grandmother passed away. I think that Bok Shil and Louie are very alike in losing family, and I think that this is why they understand each other.

And one more thing, excuse the caps, but I have to computer-scream: I LOVE THE SONG TIGER MOTH. Oh my goodness, I have not had such a visceral reaction to a song in a long long time since probably 2008, in the baby days of my watching dramas. Healer's instrumental OST came close, but wow, this song just took the cake.

Onto the next episode!

Call it Noble Idiocy or not, but Bok Shil crying scenes bring tears to my eyes and my poor heart. And I know this is a spoiler but I couldn't help myself to say it; given the fact of how the writernim managed to twist us, I strongly believed that Louie doesn't suffer his second amnesia phase(well the fact that you can't always trust the preview, and the way SIG cried convinced me so). I am also amazed on how the song fit to every title in this drama. Never in my KDramaland would I thought I would hear a Chinese songs played in the drama, yet it still managed to clutch my heart, seeing Bok Shil being true to her own feeling about Louie. Last but not least, I do read comments from time to time about SKL(not necessarily from this site) stating how Louis character appear to be dumb and acting like a fool child. I'd take offense in that, because I take pride in every character SIG has played from his rookie years to his present day. Louie was not a fool character, he is an overprotected child whom is sheltered from experiencing the real world and this has been shown from the first episode; he had bubble baths, had lots of maids, and he had butler sticking on him everywhere he goes. And this Louis character has been played consistently by SIG(be it body language, or the way he speaks) but none of it trigger any idiocy to me. For someone who haven't been given a chance to grow up and matured properly, Louis totally fits the bill. And the fact that Louis has such a good heart was an add up point for me; so why in the world Louis could be interpreted as a fool and idiot character? So kudos to SIG for bringing Louie with so much alive, and many love for Nam Ji Hyun whom managed to break my heart every time she cried. I feel you Bok Shil, I do. Haha sorry for my long post, peace ya.

Seo In-Guk's brilliance is how he 100% inhabits every character he plays, without any let-down at all. I love how he runs down the steps in SKL - with his arms flailing - just the awkward way he always runs - except when he was running like crazy, all covered in pain patches, to find Bok-Shil. And I think SIG is the true master of subtle (and over-the-top) facial expressions. While we loved Park Bo Gum and his facile face in Moonlight, SIG has to win the most 'natural' actor prize. This boy was born to act, and sing, and dance. Wow. Just wow.

I dislike it when grandma suggest that to BS and she really obeyed it....I mean maybe they need time apart for a while for her to think things over, but how would grandma know how much they love each other and maybe they could surpass the current situation and be together despite Louis caused her brother's death cos his brother was a bad gangster and robbed him off the car, watch etc...I dislike it when she said that she hate Louis now and asked him to disappear from his life, won't this hurt him as well? and also not telling him what's going on and that his brother died in place of him really frustrated me, one thing I hate is misunderstandings and never telling each other what happened/hiding things from each other "cos if I tell you you would be even more hurt, let us us just part now although it might bring some pains to us too" and stuff like dat....

Argh I'm frustrated. I feel like I should understand why this is a big deal and she ought to be pushing him away... but I don't. She knew first, knew that she still liked him and that he liked her, but followed Grandma's advice. Unless I'm missing some really subtle cues here, she's feeling like it might be more painful without him than with. So why push him away??

I did like that this episode made me repent of finding Louis annoying/burdensome in some earlier episodes. Mr. Cha was much the same way in an unfamiliar lifestyle.

Mostly, I just think our OTP is much cuter when together and hope this phase passes quickly.
