Im Shi-wan, Yoon-ah headline new historical drama The King Loves

Well, it’s about time that Im Shi-wan came back to dramaland. Not that I blame him for being extra careful; when you break out in a drama like Misaeng, creating some time and distance between Jang Geu-rae and your next TV character seems like a smart move. He’s signed on to star in the new sageuk The King Loves as the titular king who—what else—falls in love. Starring opposite him will be Girls’ Generation’s Yoon-ah (Prime Minister and I), whose other drama, tvN’s action thriller The K2, is due out this Friday.

The pre-produced drama will be set in Goryeo, and tells the story of an ambitious antihero king, and two fictional characters who will shape his destiny. Um… that sounds a lot like Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo without the time-travel. But you know what, despite being up to my eyeballs in Goryeo princes right now, I do wish I could see a drama do this the grand, sweeping way, and not the clunky, confusing way. Maybe The King Loves will get it right? Is it wrong that I wish Lee Jun-ki and IU could jump ship and do this one instead?

Im Shi-wan stars as Chungseon, the 26th king of Goryeo, though the story will begin when he’s the crown prince. He’s a strikingly beautiful young man, but that beauty and virtue on the outside hides a twisted thirst for conquest underneath. He’s described as having the wisdom of a snake, a shocking temperament, and an eloquence that makes him especially good at drawing people to his side.

The prince is described as Janus-like because of the wily ambition hidden behind his alluring charm, but he’s also a tormented man who’s lacking for affection. He’s a bundle of contradictions: sensitive, bewitching, capable, cruel, and greedy. The drama will portray his terrible rebellion, and “the beautiful but tragic love story” that involves his closest friend and the woman they both love.

Their love for her will drive the country to its destruction, in fact. Yoon-ah will play the beautiful woman San who is loved by two men, described as the Goryeo-era Scarlett O’Hara. She’s the only daughter of the wealthiest man in the nation—her father comes from the royal line and does anything if it means amassing more wealth. The third leg of the triangle is a man of royal descent named Ryn, described as elegant, refined, and upright in character. In one fell swoop, the heroine will “break down their strong bromance that’s as beautiful as a flower.” Well it couldn’t have been that strong if a girl’s going to break it down. Just sayin’.

Both actors have been confirmed, and the 100 percent pre-produced drama will begin shooting in November. It’s currently being considered at MBC for a 2017 broadcast.

Why Yoona again?! Why?! Is there any actress shortage that we dont know of? We've been waiting for Ji Chang Wook since last year but she's on that drama as some anorexic female lead, ok so we bear and grin it. And then again here with Im Shi Wan. This is an abomination! Argh!

*yawns...yeah, she's a goddess yada yada yada....Can we move to the next actress please? Not necessarily a good actress on paper but in reality...opps!

Dmn the dramagods must hate us. Some people have even the courage to say that yoona is the greatest actress, high ratings doesn't mean best= pretty face doesn't mean you can act!
Im shi wan is first and foremost an idol but did you see him in misaeng? The best yoona did was k2 (even if she was the most uselles character there) she was not so bad but you people really can't compare them! Even if you are a fan you have to be honest, she is not the best she is just popular. She can always improve, but as a viewer i wish there was a solid actress like kim ji won to look forward to.

+4. WTF this Yoon-ah again. C'mon Kdrama's get it together, there are more actresses in Korea, stop type casting the same old people we are sick of it. How many times in one year do I have to see Yoon-ah and why is she always paired with the guy leads i want to watch???

0

Yoona is the only one Actress & Actress-Idols beating hottest male actors. she is the Queen of Queens., her acting is great for that reason her popularity and fame is HUGE!

0

I think she can be considered an actress by now, not just an idol dabbling in acting.
Actually acting was on her mind since the very beginning of her training. She has since played the lead in 6 dramas (this will be the 7th) by now, to favourable review and even awards, and has a degree in theater studies. What else is needed for you guys to take her seriously as an actress?

From Wikipedia:

In 2002, she was cast in the SM Saturday Open Casting Audition and spent five years "doing nothing but constant training" in singing, dancing and acting. During her trainee days, she had low self-esteem about her low voice, and once thought of giving up singing in order to pursue an acting career.

In May 2008, Yoona landed her first leading role in KBS's drama You Are My Destiny, playing the character Jang Sae-byuk. The drama achieved viewer ratings of up to 41.5%, and Yoona became known for her character.[6][12] She considered the role a turning point in her career,[13] and won two "Best New Actress" awards at the 2008 KBS Drama Awards[14] and 45th Baeksang Arts Awards.[15] In 2009, Yoona was cast in MBC's drama Cinderella Man along with Kwon Sang-woo.[16]

In March 2012, Yoona was cast in a lead role alongside Jang Geun Suk in KBS2's drama Love Rain, a fantasy drama about fate where the offspring of an ill-fated couple who met in the 1970s, met and fell in love with each other in the modern era. Yoona played two characters: Yun-hee of the 70s and Ha-na of modern times. Although the drama lacked in domestic viewership and was criticized for its failure to relate to the viewers, Yoona's acting received positive reviews.

Yoon Ga-ee of OSEN wrote: "The speed at which her acting is improving is blinding. She has matured to the point where you want to ask, 'When did her acting get so good?

Choi In-kyung of Hankook Ilbo said her acting was continuously improving and "Yoona is completely immersed in her character and has now become 'Hana' herself.

In December 2013, Yoona starred alongside Lee Beom-soo in KBS2's romantic comedy drama Prime Minister and I. Loosely based on the musical film The Sound of Music,[27] Yoona played Nam Da-jung, a young and stubborn reporter who falls in love with the prime minister. The drama received low ratings, but Yoona was still noted for her acting ability.
Lee Beom-soo praised her, saying "Acting has to go by logic, only when one understands can the audience understand too, Yoona is smart and did very well. I am anticipating her path down as an actress; at the same time, I want to give her applause".
She won an Excellence Award at the 2013 KBS Drama Awards for the role.

In February 2015, Yoona graduated from the College of Arts, Dongguk University, with a bachelor's degree in theater studies, after starting the degree in 2009.

For your information, You are My Destiny was Daily drama. And daily drama in KBS always has huge ratings. The most popular one What's Up with Family reached 40% average ratings. But the high profile dramas always air in monday-thursday at 10.00 pm and none of her dramas at that prime time was hit.

0

"she’s on that drama as some anorexic female lead"

this is really gross and uncalled for.

everyone here is so transparent when it's coming to Yoona as well. She hasn't acted on Korean screens since 2016, that's 3 years ago, and her first acting comeback hasn't even aired yet and you are all crying her agaaaiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnn like children, acting like she is in something new every month. If you don't like her acting fine but stop acting like she has been in your face in Kdramas consistently when she hasn't, she's only now starting to really flesh out her acting resume.

Don't mind those types of comments. These damn oppar worshipers are too blinded to see how vicious they are with their words when it is an idol turned actRESS OR basically any other actRESS, unless its Park Bo Young, Kim Seul Gi, Kim Yoo Jung, etc. and fail to realize that when it's about male actors, they're not as hateful. And no I'm not derailing. I have noticed that if a male actor isn't that great acting wise, there's never really vitriol against them, where as an actress has to be the most talented and prodigy in her field to deserve a role in a drama. Smdh...

0

yeah, it's weird seeing all the "Yoona again??" comments when i haven't seen her in a k-drama in a long time. do some people really hate her that much that a couple year break between k-dramas is too little?

and agreed, the anorexic comment is really nasty and i can't believe so many cosigned that nonsense lmao. it's ok to make fun of skinny girls and make light of a serious condition as long as it's a person they dislike.

0

"some anorexic female lead"

Wow that's a really disgusting thing to say. You must be so ashamed of yourself. Anorexia is a serious mental illness, and affects so many people's lives. It should not be used as an insult.

This is pretty late, but they're not using anorexic to describe Yoona, they're talking about her role as an anorexic person.

MORE Yoona. Do the Dramagods hate me? What have I done to deserve yet more idol girls staring into the camera in 'lovely' confusion? Is this really what everybody else on the planet (or at least in Korea) wants to see? The number of dramas I can watch without tearing my hair out is fast dwindling.

your not wrong,im really not fond of idol leads unless they are actually really good like im siwan, be that an actress or actor as well not just idols actually.

i really lower my standards when it comes to idol acting though and i've noticed that even if they are average or not horrible i've come to get excited over slight improvements when i've already seen really amazing actors and actresses, so why should i get happy over small improvements by the leads of all people, im fine if they are 3rd or even 2nd lead, im more forgiving cause at least they arent leads and hope by the time they are, they are actually good.

im past the the point of waiting for them to be already really good when they have been acting for a while as well, that too in lead roles.once your lead i expect training wheels to be off, i dont wanna be sitting there watching you train im gonna give yoona a chance though in K2 so im hoping she is better then okay.

We will not whether she will be good or bad once K2 starts. Fingers crossed, maybe she is actually good or maybe its the director or maybe she is bad really. But still too many idols getting role over once who should get them, how does this work. Agency lobbying or popularity??

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Honestly, she's not terrible, or passable I guess. But I'm sick of "not terrible" for lead roles all the damn time. I'm really sick of dramas being used as an acting school for these idols and their attempts at a 2nd career. There are other young and talented rookie and upcoming actors to cast in roles who are far more deserving than these idols are. Stop casting IU, Suzy and Yoona in stuff (along with random male idols too). Is that really so hard?

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yup, totally. The thing is the idols marketability ($$$) as they already have a fan-base aside from skillful acting criteria. Unless the director & writers are more into appreciating their work, at the end of the day, it is about $$$.

I have a totally unpopular opinion here, don't think Im SW is fantastic either ( ~ duck). I think the director of Misaeng knows his camera well & very skillful in getting the job done (~ duck again).

0

she gets a lot roles for her talents, potential, for heself, not because of her aganecy(sm). SM is a damn Sh*t!!! sm always trying to block her huge success. her agency (SM) did NOT support her last drama too, she obtained huge success with her last drama again thanks to herself and her own good job, acting and talents, no because of sm agency.

she was ranking #1 on list of actors thanks to her talents, her las drama even ranking #1 too. Her last drama reaching more than 10 billion views, thanks to herself, not sm! OKEY!!

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

lol we are talking about YOONA not Sooyoung, who SM obviously doesn't support and who had to work hard for her roles. Yoona is one of the chosen ones in SM who gets the good roles, who they have produced dramas for and doesn't have to fight for much because she's nice and pretty.

And don't fool yourself into thinking SM didn't get her the Chinese drama in order to help her group break into China..that is their M.O....

0

Required fields are marked *

I don't think she's lucky, actually. There's no such thing as a free lunch in life. It wasn't an accident that she was cast in these roles. She had to work really hard to make that happen by building connections, building relationships, building her reputation, etc.

0

@Sea

Actually there is still an element of luck involved. I am not saying that it trumps over hard work and all but there are certain things that you are born with or situations you are born in that makes you less fortunate, doesn't mean that it defines you yes, but nonetheless luck has something to do with it - at least at the starting line.

0

@Ina. I wouldn't call Yoona "lucky" though. She had a pretty difficult childhood...her parents divorced when she was young and she doesn't even remember her mom. She had to work hard to prove herself at SM. She had to work hard to gain popularity with the public. She had to work hard to get acting roles. Everything she has gotten is a result of her hard work.

0

@Sea

I am obviously talking to a fan. I am sorry if I came across as dissing her. I don't know anything about her and I purely looked at her in her roles from her previous acting and had been disappointed tbh.

My statement merely highlights the fact that she had probably gotten this role not through her acting history. I am in the industry so I know how some companies/agencies with a lot of clout will pull out all the stops to get their actors/idols/celebs into a movie/drama. I have seen better actors/actresses shelved because of said companies/agencies. Those better actors/actresses did not lose out because they did not work hard but because they did not get into these companies or given the opportunity. The industry is about money so if you do have a strong company backing you up then, you are more lucky than others. I have no doubt that she worked hard in SM, however if she really likes to improve on her acting and not be unjustly criticise, then taking smaller roles, being on the sideline, observing and learning before stepping in the lead role may be a better option. That will certainly shut everyone up and I doubt anyone then will say she is lucky to get the lead role.

IMHO, I think the majority do not dislike her, it is just that if we were to sit through a drama, a drama with potential and it is carried by leads that are either mediocre or forgettable, then to us, it's almost blasphemous.

Thank you for highlight to us that she is a hard working person, but in acting, it has got to show. I do hope that her K2 experience will help her and so bring that improvement over to this drama - for all our sakes.

0

@Ina, no need to apologize, everyone is entitled to their opinion.

In terms of her getting roles because of her agency powerful agency, that's probably true, but most idols at SM don't get opportunities to act like Yoona does.

Most girls at SM who aren't in SNSD don't get chances to act. Yoona had to work hard to be chosen for SNSD and help make that group popular. And even most of the SNSD members aren't getting as much acting as Yoona. So clearly she has worked hard to make SM want to support her over her other groupmates.

0

i agree, i like yoona as a person but generally i wish instead of idols better actors were cast unless of course the idols are actually really good in the case of im siwan.yoona isnt bad but this is also a sageuk which is known to be difficult, so it could be IU in SH all over again.

This is kinda like 4th prince, 8th prince (or maybe 13th) and Ruoxi (she is general's daughter),
especially this part “the beautiful but tragic love story” ,
I still remember how painfully my heart cry when the 14th re-write the letter envelope, that's the last chance . . . .

and if the king isn't bewitching, this also reminds me of The Princess's Man,

of all, I actually gonna look forward for this,
and who gonna play Ryn, someone like Im Siwan is the face of nice guy,

how abut Lee Won Geun he has those nice and flirty feels, (but can he play Saeguk?),
Yoo Seung Ho (but he probably too big for this),
Yeo Jin goo is good but he is too young,
Park Bo Gum (He can't, lee young just reign, if the 2nd is villain type, I'll probably like if it's him)

Lee Min Hoo 93?
Baro?
Jisoo?

No to PBG & Jisoo. One puppa shouldn't be 2nd lead anymore in my book. And the other needs to rest for his health, even if this is a far time off.

Might I suggest: Kwak Dong Yeon (too young?)
Kim Minsuk (I need him in a bigger role)
Gong Myung (back to back w/ Drinking Solo & Entertainer)
Ahn Hyo Seop (I want to see him again)
Lee Tae Hwan? (^^)*

The other half of the bromance will be the deciding factor for me because I haven't seen fallen in love with Im Shi Wan and because I don't actively seek out Yoona dramas anymore.

Can they change the female lead to someone like Jung Somin or Park Boyoung?

Really...love that Yoona is so eager to keep working back to back, but as pretty as she is...I don't find her to be a mesmerizing actress that I LOVE to watch on screen...

Would also prefer another actress...sigh.

There are Jo Boa, Lee se young, Jung so min, Ha yeon soo, Lee yubi and more. Not necessarily the best actresses but at the very least better than most idol-actresses.

FINALLY! I have been waiting for you, Jang Geu-rae! Congrats to Yoona for landing another lead role. She is decent in my book. I hope she improves more.

The story is nothing new, so it'll come down to execution. I have no qualms with a story that's familiar so long as the execution is done right and as a viewer I can connect with the characters. Looking forward to ISW in hanbok! woohoo!

In defense for Yoona, let's give her another chance! Who knows the K2 trailer looks really good right now so I'm excited to see her improvements since the last drama I saw her in.

And it's good she's so excited to up her resume and title as an actress. I really think she's trying to shed the title of acting idol especially with SNSD getting older. We all know her career as an idol won't last forever.

It's good she's trying to shed her old image. She's 26, and it's about time she start better establishing herself in the film/drama industry. I think she's trying to follow the footsteps of others like Eugene and Yoon Eun Hye, and I really wish her luck with these next 2 dramas because they will be pivotal for her career :) I definitely don't want Yoona disappearing off the face of the earth after her SNSD career is over :(

I have decided I am allergic to patience and fortitude. Whenever someone suggests we give these manufactured and well-backed idols yet another chance to prove they can actually emote, I break out all in hives. Here's Yoona, trying to prove she can do more than light and simple, and I feel an itch coming on.

I've always love your sarcasm. lol

Sigh!!! Is Korea in dearth of good young actresses? I'm kinda allergic to Yoona. Her acting in K2 trailers also looks painful, so even if it's JCW, I have to pass. And now this.....

Wow...you said it. Yes she's a good person, yes she's done humanitarian work, yes she's this and that...but there's no connection to her acting... we've given her lots of chances already...when i see yoona acting, I see yoona...I had to close one eye looking at K2 trailers...help dramagods.

I always give everyone 4-8 episode,
drama is not just about the female lead and the quality of acting isn't just about who is the best actress but who is fitted the best, who knew if this fits her before watching, right?

so yeah I don't have a problem with idol before the drama aired, because after all they all just acting, it's the act that we need to judge,

Why do we have to give her a chance? Is drama watching some kind of charity? It's ridiculous the audience is supposed to put up with mediocre acting in order to give these rich spoiled idols a "chance" to improve. There's a reason most idol led drams fail. The Korean audience won't put up crappy acting.
