Dramabeans Podcast #33

We’re trying something a little different this time, so the format will be a little looser than normal… in that there isn’t much of a format today. More like a free-for-all. And rather than going drama by drama, we wanted to focus more on actors today — any and all that we could think of, in whatever order we thought them up.

Note: We recorded this podcast about two weeks ago and then got swamped with premieres and whatnot; it was before the latest batch of premieres with Moonlight Drawn By Clouds, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, Jealousy Incarnate and the like. Better late than never?

Oooh, been hoping for a podcast for quite some time now, and it's finally here!! Thank you!! Loved hearing your thoughts about the various actors/actresses, especially when put into context of dramas they've done. Seems I'm missing out though, coz I've realised just how many of the mentioned dramas I've not yet watched - must do more dramathoning!

Speaking of requests, I'd love to hear more of your thoughts on many of the side characters - maybe dedicate an entire podcast to them (the ones who have gained popularity as well as the lesser known ones, but have still made a lasting impact). After years of watching dramas, I love it when I recognise talents that have starred in multiple other dramas. Just a shame that I don't always remember their names! Need to work on that, seriously!

Some of my recent faves have been the duo that starred as Seo In Guk's friends in High School King of Savvy - one of many reasons I love re-watching that drama! I love it when they crop up in other shows, like the more recent W, Bring it on Ghost...Pride and Prejudice was a good one too.

Thank you, ladies! x

As mentioned earlier, you should do an FB livecast! That would be awesome.

When I started live-watching dramas, I did not bother looking up the names of the actors and the actresses as (1) almost all of them looked the same and (2) it was easy to mistake an actress with that from another drama and (3) I was finding it difficult to memorize three-syllable names.

But, yeah, I eventually gave in and googled most of them that, currently, I am more familiar with korean celebrities than the ones in my country.

JB & GF, I really like listening to you discuss the technical side of drama production. I can recognize bad acting but I like it when you highlight how writing and directing influence the outcome. I would be interested in a podcast where you discussed dramas that were so lacking that you chose to drop them or dramas that were lacking and you chose to stick it out. I find that I'm more resentful of dramas that suck but I choose to stick it out rather than dramas that I drop. (I wish I hadn't pushed through all PJ Hobbit's or I had been in the editing booth.) On the other had there are some where an actor will cause me to stick it out and I'm OK with that, or some writing crack will keep be engaged.

Hmmmm, Dickens is great but sometimes a Harlequin fun.

This is my first dramabeans podcast and I have to say I love your voice and I would like to make a request.

I have been a kdrama fan since 2012 and one constant thing I have noticed is the comparison between the 3 kims (kim so hyun, kim sae ron and kim yoo jung).

I would love it if you talk about this comparison and the difference between this 3 teenage actresses.

yayy!! finally the podcast is here. I'm loving this new format- talking about actors/actresses instead of just the drama. Thank you javabeans and girlfriday. It's always so fun to listen to guys.

I couldn't agree more about what you guys said about joo won. i remember watching him in baker king, ojakgyo brothers and gaksital, and i thought that he was one of those actors with cool/smart persona but than i saw him in 1n2d... turns out he's 180 degrees opposite from what id expected. he honestly surprises me every time with his acting. And i respect him so much for being very humble and hardworking. I'm still shocked at the fact that he dedicated his 6 months to learn violin and conducting for nodame.**
Joo won is definitely one of my all time favourite actors.

Park bo gum has been on my radar ever since he was in reply 1988. He's still just 22 so i think he has a lot of potentials. his smile though <3

As for the next/future podcasts, can you please talk about the 3 young ladies: kim yoo jung, kim soo hyun and kim rae won. About how their acting is different/similar and their strong points and weaknesses.
Also yoo ah in's performance in his movie, veteran.
And Song joong ki. By the way is it just me who isnt blown away by his acting? i admit he's a great actor and he's very charming but i do think that people give him too much credit. *beanies pleas don't kill me*

Also yoo seung ho please. I absolutely love him as a person and as a actor but its such a shame that he's still got that babyface and small physique. i know hes still just 23 but i really just wanted him to be able to come out of his 2 years enlistment and take on grown up roles instead of still acting as a high schooler or taking on noona romances :/ Having said that I still love him to bits and im looking forward to his future projects.

I feel the same way about Song Joong Ki. So, you won't be the only target for angry beanies :D

There was a time when I took note of him and thought he would make it big. I really liked him as Yong Ha in SKKS. Strangely it was Nice Guy that made me think he wasn't that great after all. I was expecting a very dark and intense character and I thought SJK fell short in delivery. I know a lot of people loved him as Maru, I just wasn't one of them. Dots didn't work for me so I am hoping SJK takes on a more challenging role for his next project.

Yoo Seung Ho? Just don't make him cry. Comedy would be much better!

glad to hear that I'm not the only one.
It's the same for me too, i loved his character in SKK scandal and was very excited to watch nice guy but i dropped it after few episodes. And again in dots, he plays a very likeable dreamy character but thats about it. Hopefully he'll take on roles with more emotional depth in the future and prove us wrong.

goodness! talking about yoo seung ho and him crying ugh because of Remember, i woke up with swollen eyes every thurday and friday for those 10 weeks. I really want to see him in light romcom >-< i understand that his has a very sorrowful yet beautiful pair of eyes and i see why directors would be tempted to cast him in such roles but please dramaland give him some break. his eyes looks even more beautiful when he smiles! so bring on those romcoms!!

Re Song Joong-ki: I didn't warm up to his Maru either and thought he was miscast in DOTS - couldn't take him seriously there. I think he's a decent actor, but not someone who blows me away with his acting.

"As for the next/future podcasts, can you please talk about the 3 young ladies: kim yoo jung, kim soo hyun and kim rae won." Kim Rae Won is not a young lady, I think you are mistaken with someone else. AAnyways, since the name was dropped I second the request, please talk about Kim Rae Won , he is a very talented actor.

As for Si Jin's code name in Descendants, I always assumed it was a nod towards Big Boss in the game Metal Gear Solid. Big Boss in the game is a badass former special forces black ops agent. With all the other code names being pop culture references, it made perfect sense to me.

Appreciate the comments on the less popular but talented actors like David Lee. I'm not watching Ghost but I know that this kid has something to offer.
I love rooting for the less popular with talents/potential because the more popular will always be the talk of the town for their bad acting or the little itty bit improvement here and there (rinse repeat, bores me to death).

I would be great if you pick an actor for the week and go through their background for the viewers to get to know them.
Actors like Oh Man-seok (Police Unit 38), Kim Eui-sung (W-Two World), Im Joo-hwan (UF) etc etc. I don't think half the viewers here knows who they are.
Not all of them will get their "Oh Hae Young" break through like Seo Hyun-jin who truly deserved it 5yrs ago.
(with the exception of Kim Eui-sung of who is fine movie actor).

Just a suggestion <3!

This is something I thought of a lot when I was watching Misaeng, Grapevine, and PU38 - it's kind of a shame hardly any shows actually let their older (and usually vastly more experienced and skilled) actors who usually end up in supporting roles, have the spotlight. It's really only the classic sageuks and the weekend dramas that do that, and that's a shame.

the more popular will always be the talk of the town for their bad acting or the little itty bit improvement here and there (rinse repeat, bores me to death).

The only thing that's not boring is the increasing creativity of the excuses for that bad acting, lol.

And Seo Hyun-jin should have broken out years ago, I only discovered her in Three Musketeers but it's kind of awful that it took that long. That's something that really sucks about the lead/second lead casting system - hit dramas rarely benefit their second leads and especially not the women, no matter how talented they are. Probably a side effect of women being written solely as figures to be hated, with a few thankful exceptions.

Absolutely loved this podcast. One of my favorites!

Its always extra nice when you talk about things that you want to talk about rather than feeling like you have to talk about every show because you have to take it off the checklist?

And you all really should do a Live stream. We can all pitch in and it would be one big drama party. You could do a year end impressions kind of thing? Where general impressions on the year's shows, on how kdramaland is shaping up, on future, on actors and also our questions too!!

And its always nice to hear your take on general topics surrounding drama : the ratings dip or rise, changing drama landscape, online phenomenon keeps getting bigger and bigger, the award shows, your take on the media news, PPL - all the behind the scenes stuff of a actual drama. I would really love both your take on that!

i personally liked this format of discussing actors, as opposed to dramas. i think it was a bit more fresh to get to hear your personal takes on actors as opposed to dramas, since we get the recaps and now also the what we're watching posts, so we sort of know what you're enjoying. but you could probably naturally do a mixture of both. most likely the actors you'll end up chatting about will have done a project recently, or will do one, or have done something in the past. so either way, we'll know who they are.

i hope you'll discuss park bo-gum next time. right now i love him a bit more than i love kim soo-hyun, which is saying a lot, because i ADORE kim soo-hyun. park bo-gum reminds me of kim soo-hyun. i struggle to properly articulate myself as to why i feel this way. they don't look alike, their acting styles are different, and their personas are different. maybe it's their respective talents? maybe because they both similarly evoke noona-like feelings in me? kim is around my age, but he's always seemed younger and i always wanted to pinch his cheeks whenever he was onscreen. park bo-gum on the other hand, makes me want to give him a hug. or hide in fear, depending on the drama.

Loved how you two pointed out how good directing and good writing can mask bad acting... really explains why I like certain dramas despite not liking certain actors (i.e. Lee SeungGi... horrible actor yet King2Hearts was a masterpiece because the script and the acting of the rest of the stellar cast masked it in that drama)

I would love podcasts talking about the older actors (the actors/actresses that now play the mothers, fathers, grandparents). As a non-korean, I don't have a reference to which I can compare to

Listening about Joo Won who couldn't remember how he did it because he was too tired while filming Gaksital reminded me of what Kim Seul-gi said. She said while filming Splash splash love, she was so tired that she fell asleep on one romantic scene where Yoon Doo-jun was on top of her on the ground. She said people found out she fell asleep because she didn't say her lines after Yoon. lol (or feeling sorry for overworked actors/actresses)

On the topic of crying... and Blood... Was I the only one that lowkey noticed and then continually got bothered by Goo Hye Sun in Blood whenever she'd kind of be semi-cross eyed in all her crying scenes... like it was a technic she used to actually cry... I feel like sometimes the same thing happened with Jun Ji Hyun... in You From Another Star. I definitely acknowledge the talent the latter has for sure- but in the middle of this tense, emotional scene... I'd notice the cross-eyed thing going on and then bam.. 4th wall broken down lol. I'd tear up and then start chuckling at the eye situation XD

I really love this format of talking thru actors/actresses especially in recent dramas. Died laughing at Taecyon's abilities and his uncanny resemblance to SSH (got the acting down pat too!). Although I have to say that he did a much better job than Suzy, who I cannot connect at ALL. I was so willing to give her the benefit of the doubt, but when it's a melodrama and you can feel the angst from everyone except the main actress, then we have a problem. I gave up after 15 episodes and will read the recaps from here on for UF.

And can we talk about the success/not success of pre-producing kdramas with Korean audiences? Why it worked so well with DoTS and even to an extent CITT, and not UF or even SH:R as of this writing? I'm hoping KES will work her magic again with Goblin and Gong Yoo, coz I need him in another great drama after Coffee Prince (and no, Big didn't happen).

It was great hearing your voices.

Loved the podcast - especially the part about Joo won. I think if he had not been doing dramas, he would have continued doing musicals. I read before that he missed it so much that he auditioned for the musical Ghost without his agency’s knowledge. I watched him play Sam Wheat in 2014 and he was amazing.

Oh! I wished you talked about Byun Yohan. He's only been acting for a few years but he's tried a wide variety of characters and I find that really amazing. I mean, how do you go from his character in Misaeng to Goryeo's best swordsman?

I agree about believing that the character exists as oppose to being aware it's being acted is a sign of talent. I totally saw Yoo Ahin as Lee Bangwon all through out Dragons. That guy is just all sorts of amazing.

Lol at Jo Jungseok's tripping.

This podcast was great! I so missed hearing your voices! : )

Just like earthna, I'ld love to hear you guys talk about Yoo Ah-In and Byun Yo han...and Six Flying Dragons, in general.

I'm also watching Mirror of the Witch just now, and I wanted to hear more about the drama during the podcast, since what you said about the actors was spot on.

You probably have talked about Gong Hyo Jin before...but I'm curious to know if you both think she's in the same group as Lee Bo Young? What group would you place Kim Ha-Neul and Ha Ji-Won in--cos I tend to lump them into the same [not-quite-labelled] cluster??

What about Hyun Bin? Is he in the same league as Soong Joong Ki?

Five years. Five years, SO many dramas, a still-superficial knowledge of the Korean language, and Google have finally brought me to the point where I can listen to your podcasts like I'm hanging out with a few friends, laughing at in-jokes, knowing who most of the people and dramas you talk about are. It's a great feeling, and that was an awesome podcast. Thanks, guys!

Thanks for the podcast! I enjoyed the discussion of different actors. Other actors to discuss: Kim So-yeon and Nam Goong-min

I apologize if this was stated already as a suggestion for a live request line during your podcast (I didn't read all the previous comments >.<); I read that some people suggested livestream. As an alternative, pose a question on twitter, maybe with some sort of hashtag or just collect replies, and then you could scroll through suggestions before/during your recording. This way, you get a live, controlled input without needing to change too much of your normal recording setup.

I was surprised to to see what other works they had under their belt..especially the director. After that I thought that I would love to hear you talking about certain PDs and writers in more detail.
