Oh Hae-young Again: Episode 6
by LollyPip
We finally learn a bit about the past, and a little insight into why things ended up the way they did for Do-kyung. Things are not always as they seem, not that it excuses lack of communication and abandonment, but it may offer a reasoning that softens the blow. But truth always brings the possibility of change, which isn’t always a good thing, especially when a tentative peace has just been established.
EPISODE 6: “Half love, half pity”
Do-kyung goes looking for the source of the crashing sound he hears, while our Hae-young cries for him to come home, and the other Hae-young gasps for air in the streets. He sees a vision — an object flying through a window, and our Hae-young on the other side, fury in her eyes.
As it turns out, the other Hae-young was hyperventilating, triggered by an old typewriter she saw in a shop that reminded her of one that Do-kyung used to work on. When she thinks of him a deep bitterness rises, something she could never tell anyone. She thinks that she wants to tell him why she left like she did, but he doesn’t seem interested in hearing it.
Hae-young’s mom gets angry when she hears that Dad agreed to set Hae-young up on a blind date — they don’t need to get rid of her that much. She yells that Hae-young doesn’t need a man and can live alone perfectly fine. Go Mom!
Dad uncharacteristically insists that she needs to get married, because when he thinks what his life would have been like without Mom… and he gets choked up. Awww, Dad. Mom heads out to Hae-young’s place, but she narrowly misses her daughter on the bus.
She calls Hae-young to yell at her for her messy apartment (as she cleans it up — once a mom, always a mom), then she sits down among the debris to snuffle that her daughter and husband are both pitiful.
Do-kyung can hear singing when he arrives home, and he recalls his premonition of Hae-young angrily throwing something through a pane of glass. He lets himself into Hae-young’s place and sees someone lying on her bed in a face mask, listening to music.
Assuming it’s Hae-young, he pulls out her earbuds and grouchily asks why she’s not at work, telling her to knock off the humming so he can rest. Startled, Mom just nods, and after he goes back to his side of the door, she wonders what the heck her daughter’s been up to.
She finds the landlord’s assistant who tells her the whole story, how Hae-young and Do-kyung fought over who should move out, but eventually decided to live in peace. But they were supposed to construct an actual wall, and Mom’s eyebrows shoot up, knowing that they haven’t.
At least Do-kyung is handsome and has good specs, being the CEO of his own company. Mom goes home in a bit of a daze, and tells her husband, “Kicking Hae-young out was the best thing we ever did for her.” HA.
Jin-sang wants all the juicy details when he hears that the Oh Hae-youngs met each other, especially curious to hear why Do-kyung’s ex left on their wedding day. Do-kyung says he didn’t ask, claiming that he’s not even curious. Jin-sang declares all Oh Hae-youngs to be nuts, and wonders what our Hae-young will do when she finds out what he and Do-kyung did to her fiance.
When Soo-kyung skips home drunk yet again, Jin-sang declares her perfect circus material, heh. She randomly asks if he thinks the aliens are coming soon, and he says they are, just to get rid of her.
We get a little insight into why Soo-kyung drinks to oblivion every night — apparently she got dumped, and she’s been going to the restaurant where they used to go every evening, hoping he’ll show up again. She messes up her hair in case she sees him again, so that he won’t recognize her when she does.
She imagines herself in the midst of an alien invasion with her love, happy that the world will be destroyed and she doesn’t have to hurt anymore. They’ll both just die, and it will be over. It’s a frivolous image, but in reality, Soo-kyung cries her heart out.
Mom takes Dad to visit Hae-young, though it’s really an excuse to get a closer gander at Do-kyung. They pretend to be just arriving when he comes outside, and Mom makes a point to mention that it’s Hae-young’s birthday, and the poor pitiful thing hasn’t got a man to celebrate with. Dad just stands there openly inspecting Do-kyung, until Mom finally drags him away. Once they get inside, Dad can’t stop giving the secret door the hairy eyeball, hee.
Hee-ran feels bad that she’s got plans and can’t celebrate Hae-young’s birthday with her, but Hae-young says she’s too old to make a fuss anyway. She forbids Hee-ran to tell Do-kyung that it’s her birthday, and says she’s going to end her crush anyway, now that she knows he nearly married the other Hae-young.
Do-kyung is fighting the urge to call Hae-young, and she plans to spend her birthday evening alone. But a knock on her door proves to be Do-kyung armed with drinks and snacks, which is so cute I can’t even stand it.
Despite her earlier decision to stop liking him, Hae-young runs around cleaning up and setting out the snacks he brought, and when he lets himself through the secret door she sees him in romantic slow-motion, heh. She teases him for bringing snack cakes instead of a real birthday cake, and he shyly pulls a tiny little music box out of his pocket. How are you so adorable, sir?
He plays it off like it’s no biggie, just something he had lying around, but he’s not very convincing considering that it has a fluffy teddy bear wearing bunny ears on it. Hae-young calls him out for being afraid she’ll attach some meaning to it, and says that she knows exactly what this gift means. She winds up the music box and they both listen to it tinkle out “Rock-a-Bye Baby.”
Hae-young gets a call and goes a little stiff, telling whoever is on the other line that she’s alone. Do-kyung goes back to his own place to answer a call from Hoon and reset his recording equipment, then steps outside to toss his car keys to Hoon to borrow. When he heads back inside, his recorder is playing Hae-young’s tearful pleading from the other night.
He hears Hae-young saying that she likes him, and how she’d cried that she was bored and lonely. He doesn’t see Hae-young in her apartment also listening to her own voice, until she barges through the door to stop the recorder.
Do-kyung defends that he’s not secretly recording her, it’s just habit from his career. He says that usually he deletes the recordings without even listening — in fact this is the first one he’s listened to since she moved in. Hae-young calms a bit and says she was just drunk, and that she throws herself at men all the time when she drinks.
Do-kyung fires back for her to stop drinking and throwing herself at just any man, not even him. It’s foolish and only hurts her. Hae-young asks why he’s angry, claiming that she does it with tons of men, he’s not special.
His doorbell rings, and they see that it’s the other Hae-young at Do-kyung’s door. Hae-young shoots Do-kyung this betrayed look, and goes back to her place. Too upset to stay where she knows the other Hae-young is, she goes out for an angry walk.
Do-kyung doesn’t feel like chatting with the other Hae-young, and just tells her to say why she’s here then leave. She says flirtatiously that she’d have to stay all night, then.
He remembers a time when he’d driven her home and she’d been distracted, but claimed to just be tired. It had been the night before their wedding and the last time he’d seen her, and he’s never figured out why she just disappeared. He tells her now that there’s only one resaon he can think of that would warrant his forgiveness, and asks if she had an incurable disease and was trying to push him away.
Hae-young says that’s not what happened, that she wasn’t sick, and Do-kyung’s eyes go hard as he says, “You should have died.” He’s furious that she’s back and acting like nothing happened, and his disgust is written all over his face. Hae-young smiles as she cries, which makes him even angrier, but she says that it’s always been her habit because he didn’t like women who cry.
He accuses her of blaming others yet again, and tells her never to come back here. But she wants to know why he’s attracted to our Hae-young — was it because of their names? It’s too big a coincidence for her to just accept it, but Do-kyung is offended that she’d think he was so hung up on her that he’d date someone just for sharing her name.
Just as their argument starts to escalate, a rock comes flying through Do-kyung’s window, smashing the glass. He looks out to see our Hae-young in the courtyard, hissing in anger with tears in her eyes. It’s his premonition come to life, and he watches as she whirls and leaves again.
Hae-young pedals her bike all the way to Hee-ran’s place, accidentally interrupting what looks like a very hot-and-heavy date. Hee-ran sends her date away and Hae-young tells her the whole story, even admitting breaking Do-kyung’s window.
Hee-ran thinks Hae-young should have stayed at Do-kyung’s and staked her territory (so to speak), but Hae-young reminds her how she always wilts around the other Hae-young. Hee-ran gripes at her to grow up already — they aren’t in school anymore, and what’s there to be afraid of? Besides, as far as Do-kyung is concerned, our Hae-young is winning right now.
Hae-young cries out, “He found out that I like him!” and tells Hee-ran how he recorded her accidental confession. She’s so embarrassed at how she rambled on thinking nobody would hear her.
She stays to spend the night at Hee-ran’s, who says that Hae-young has been acting out of character lately. It’s not like her to cancel her wedding, or to fall for another guy so quickly. She says she’s seemed like a different person, and she’s curious what it is about Do-kyung that’s making her like this.
Hae-young says that she’s just revealed her inner self to him — the one thing she couldn’t tell anyone else. Somehow she tells her deepest secrets to him, and once she started, she couldn’t stop.
Hee-ran says that means he’s her person to rely on, which sometimes happens between men and women. You meet a person and you just instantly know you can tell them things you can’t tell your closest friends. Hae-young smiles at that, and it calms her enough that she can finally rest.
A little while later she gets a text from Do-kyung: “Come home and sleep. I won’t say anything.” Awww, he’s worried about her. Hae-young turns over to go back to sleep… then jumps up and rushes out. Go, girl, go!
She grins a mile wide the whole way home, and Do-kyung is waiting on his balcony when she enters the courtyard. Cue super-awkward moment, hee. Finally he goes inside without saying anything like he promised, and Hae-young wilts, simultaneously relieved and disappointed. Also embarrassed… “I came home too fast!”
She makes a lot of noise coming inside, but Do-kyung just says through the door, “Go to bed.” She gathers enough courage to ask why the other Hae-young came and if she’ll be back, and Do-kyung answers that no, she won’t. Hae-young asks him again to disregard what he heard on the recording, and not to feel pressured.
Do-kyung quietly agrees, promises not to record her again, and tells her to go to bed. She does, barking her shin in the dark, but she still can’t rest. She bolts upright to add that she’ll pay for his broken window, even though Do-kyung says it’s not necessary.
Do-kyung does as he promised and turns off his recording equipment, even going do far as to dismantle it. He has another vision of Hae-young, smiling among a fall of cherry blossoms, saying softly, “Your hands are warm.”
The other Hae-young works out her frustrated energy on a climbing wall, replaying our Hae-young saying that unless she’s planning to get married, she’s just playing with Do-kyung. Seeing Do-kyung and Hae-young together is eating her up inside, as well as the hatred in Do-kyung’s eyes when she tried to talk to him. She loses her focus and falls off the wall, hanging in midair.
Do-kyung’s mom has lunch with her fiance Chairman Jang and his grown daughter, who clearly doesn’t like her. She points out that she’ll inherit everything when her dad dies, and she’s well aware that Do-kyung’s mom is there to try to get some of that money. She’s openly hostile, calling Do-kyung’s mom old and tacky, and finally leaves the table in disgust.
She runs into the other Hae-young on her way out, and it seems the two know each other, though the daughter doesn’t seem overly pleased to see Hae-young. Ah, apparently at one point Hae-young’s mother was married to Chairman Jang, though the daughter allows that she was the only wife that wasn’t after his money.
Hae-young goes in to say hello to the chairman, and things get really awkward she and Do-kyung’s mom recognize one another. Chairman Jang is completely oblivious to the frost in the air.
Hae-young approaches Mom in the lobby, and Mom is looking very nervous. Hae-young is colder than we’ve seen her, and reminds Mom that she once told her she’ll take after her mother and switch men often. She seems to find unhappy amusement to catch Mom with one of her mother’s exes.
She asks if being the fifth wife wouldn’t be humiliating, and Mom finally whirls around and spits out, “So what?!” She asks if Hae-young plans to try and ruin her wedding, and Hae-young says she does: “I want to ruin it just like mine.” Do-kyung’s mother screams back that Hae-young ruined her own wedding, and leaves as quickly as she can.
In flashback, before Do-kyung and Hae-young’s wedding, Mom had tried to call Hae-young several times, and when she ignored the calls, she found her at work and whacked her upside the head with her purse. I mean hard too, ouch. She’d followed Hae-young around the office loudly insulting her and her parentage, while Hae-young tried her best to ignore her.
She’d taunted Hae-young that her parents were divorced and had both been married several times, and now Hae-young’s dig about being Chairman Jang’s fifth wife makes a lot more sense. Mom was beyond vicious, and had even followed Hae-young home to bully her there as well.
She’d taken great pleasure in telling Hae-young that she wouldn’t be at the wedding only one day prior, and when Hae-young calmly accepted it, she’d jeered that she sent Hae-young a recording that she should listen to before marrying Do-kyung.
Back in the present the two Hae-youngs meet in their building’s lobby again, and the other Hae-young asks our Hae-young to please not ignore her. She invites her out for a drink after work, and says that she’ll just drink alone when our Hae-young declines.
The other Hae-young spends the evening looking at old photos of her and Do-kyung, and she’s kept an old cell phone that’s chock-full of pictures of the two of them. She even still has the recording that Do-kyung’s mother sent to her, and she listens to it again now.
Do-kyung’s mother is trying to call Do-kyung, and she rushes to his house. Soo-kyung stops her outside the gate (by literally materializing from out of the shrubbery, ha), and Mom runs in fear.
Soo-kyung chases her down and tells her never to come back to this house, but Mom stammers that she’s not here for Do-kyung’s money, she’s here to warn them that his ex-fiancee is back. She’s distraught that Hae-young’s mother was married to Chairman Jang, and that news makes Soo-kyung listen.
Of course it’s all about Mom, and she whines that now she may not be able to marry the chairman if Hae-young decides to pitch a fit. And no marriage means no money, which is the real problem. Soo-kyung sneers that she knew Mom had something to do with Do-kyung and Hae-young’s marriage not happening.
Mom defends her indefensible position, claiming that Hae-young came from a bad family, mostly citing that her parents were each married several times. Soo-kyung points out that Mom’s marriage to Chairman Jang would be her third, but naturally that’s different.
Soo-kyung loses it and screams that that’s not the real reason she stopped the wedding, and everyone knows it. She just didn’t want Do-kyung, her cash cow, taken away from her, and Hae-young was too smart to let him keep giving her money after they married.
Soo-kyung says that even animals are better mothers, and Mom’s just lucky that Hae-young left without saying anything to Do-kyung. She loved him so much she didn’t want to come between him and his mother, even knowing what a harpy she is. Soo-kyung wants to know what Mom did to make such a sweet woman do that, but Mom just runs. Yeah, you better run.
Do-kyung has the boys take all their equipment to an overlook to record some sounds, and when they stop to take a break he finds a USB in his bag. He plugs it into this laptop to listen — it’s a recording of Hae-young telling him not to record her anymore, and he stops to listen.
He listens to other recordings his equipment picked up — Hae-young talking to the television, eating loud snacks, even farting. He hears her complaining about the door between their apartments, and praying as she lies in bed at night. One of her prayers even involves Do-kyung, a “guy with nice eyes” (truer words were never spoken), and she asks for help bringing him back to himself.
Hae-young’s mom is offended when Hae-young’s aunt implies that she shouldn’t come to her cousin’s wedding, and mentions that everyone is wondering about her broken engagement. She’s obviously fishing for gossip, but she crosses a line when she suggests that maybe it wasn’t Hae-young who called things off.
Mom starts taking her apron and sweater off — oh it is ON. Dad desperately tries to calm Mom, even attempting to physically hold her back, but Mom just gives Auntie this frightening, calm smile.
She tells Auntie that Hae-young might be bringing a man to the wedding, and that he’s quite stunning – he will probably even make her future son-in-law look pathetic. Dad even chimes in that he’s the CEO of his own company, so cute.
That night Do-kyung listens while Hae-young accepts her delivery pizza and calls out for her “honey,” like she always does. He heads through the door and grabs the pizza like he belongs there, and Hae-young’s face is priceless.
She quickly hides her laundry and explains that she only does that so they won’t know she lives alone, asking him not to misunderstand. Do-kyung says he’ll move the cabinet from in front of the door… you know, so she can escape if a weirdo does push his way in.
He goes back to his side and this time brings her a lamp, so she won’t keep whacking her shins in the dark. It’s only because she’s noisy, and it’s an old lamp anyway. Riiight. He goes back to his side again, and declines when Hae-young asks if he wants any pizza.
She lies in bed that night smiling at her lamp, knowing instinctively the real reason he gave it to her — because he cares.
COMMENTS
It’s so lovely that Do-kyung isn’t fighting his feeling for Hae-young (much), or pretending they don’t exist, and even goes out of his way to take care of her. His motivations are a bit difficult to decipher but I do think that most of his hesitation is because of how he wronged her, and not because his ex-fiancee suddenly reappeared. In fact, I think it’s amazing that her showing up isn’t shaking him as much as I expected. As many dramas as I’ve seen, I’m conditioned to expect characters to act certain ways when certain things happen, and I love that this show doesn’t have its characters behaving in any way other than what’s natural to them. In any other drama I would expect Do-kyung to think he’s obligated to go back to his ex, but here he really wants nothing to do with her. I think, if she just quietly went away, he would be fine with that.
I really appreciate how all of our character act and react like normal people, and not like stock drama characters. One of my favorite traits about our Hae-young is how she easily calls out awkward moments, like when she could tell Do-kyung was scared she’d see his birthday gift as something special. She knows it is and doesn’t let him get away with pretending it’s not, and she’s done that sort of thing consistently since they met, like when she yelled at him for wrist-grabbing her, or teased him for being scared they might sleep together when he tried to have her kicked out. It’s in line with her personality to lay the truth right out there, and it serves a double purpose of not allowing Do-kyung to hide behind his taciturn personality or reluctance to show that he cares. I get the feeling, even though he’s the one who always gets found out, that Do-kyung actually likes that about Hae-young and it’s a big reason he’s falling for her. She knows what he’s thinking and isn’t afraid to hang a lantern on it, even if it’s uncomfortable, so he’s forced to face the way he feels.
What Do-kyung’s mother did, stopping his wedding so she could continue to take money from him, is nothing short of sick. I’m literally nauseated just thinking about a mother who would do that to her child. As many terrible mother-in-laws I’ve seen in dramaland, Do-kyung’s mother has to be one of the worst, because at least all of those chaebol mothers genuinely think they’re doing what’s best for their child. Do-kyung’s mom not only used her son, but she tormented the woman he loved so horrifically that she left him on their wedding day without a word. There’s nothing in that that could be justified as “for his own good,” not even in a twisted way. It’s sick and evil, and I was truly shocked when I realized what she did and why. I already thought she was a terrible mother and an opportunistic gold-digger, but I never expected this.
It’s no wonder the other Hae-young fled the wedding to avoid becoming her daughter-in-law. Aside from her basic personality (which still doesn’t impress me, the way she treats our Hae-young) and the brief worry about a fatal illness, I’ve always felt that Hae-young probably had a good reason for leaving, and escaping someone who is literally stalking and viciously attacking you, mentally and physically, is a pretty valid reason. I can even understand why she didn’t stop to talk to Do-kyung first, for fear that he’d talk her out of it. What I can’t excuse is a year of no contact, no explanation, not even attempting to reach Do-kyung to tell him why she left. Unless there’s something on that recording to explain otherwise, there’s no excuse for treating a person so hurtfully.
That’s not to say that I don’t feel a lot of compassion for the other Hae-young, now that we’ve seen what Do-kyung’s mother put her through. She truthfully held up very well for as long as she could, and whatever was on that recording, it must have been pretty bad to tip her over the edge. Do-kyung’s mother hinted that it was proof that he didn’t love her, so I’m really curious to hear what he said and how Mom twisted it to sound bad enough to make Hae-young disappear for over a year. I think there’s a lot more to this story, and the truth may sway Do-kyung for a bit, but I trust that his feelings for our Hae-young are growing strong enough that the other Hae-young won’t pose a true threat to their relationship.

thank you for the recaps!
I really love that scene where Haeyoung called out Do Kyung for the "cake." and the music bunny that he "always had." I really like it when Hae Young has the upper hand and Do Kyung is feeling uncomfortable. It's freakin' hilarious. It wasn't long when things seemed to turn sour after hearing the confession. There’s something painful about the way Do Kyung reacted to hearing Hae Young’s confession and then being confronted about it by her. It feels as if, he's mad about it because deep down, he knows he felt the same way and was guilty, and unworthy. It must be killing him. Because even I, as a viewer, always think about the mistake he had done at the back of my mind.
"You should have died." I literally shivered at that part. That was so intense, the way Do Kyung's eyes were burning with hatred, and his voice was so low and furious.
I really want to like the other Oh Hae Young but she's making it difficult every time she talks about our Oh Hae Young. "Why her? Is it because we have the same name? It's always been like that, men trying to get to me through her." WTF, GURL. I was totally on board with Do Kyung saying, "Don't you dare." because DON'T YOU DARE, Other Oh Hae Young. That was so insulting.
I also love that part when Do Kyung was driving home and he was thinking about how many times our Hae Young tripped and her confession. I don't think other Oh Hae Young's return has changed how he feels and how much he thinks of our Hae Young and it showed during that drive home.
When he gave her that lamp... "I always had it." ugh. FEELS.

I keyed in on that line too about the men using Regular Hae young to get to her but I read it differently. Funny how someone's perspective can be different based on their own personal experience. It's a burden to be the person singled out in a completely different way it's a burden to be ignored. I mean would you actually want that gaggle of men bugging the hell out of you constantly, or other women hating you for it either? I'm from a family just stuffed full of beautiful head turning women. (I'm one of the only few that aren't BTW.) My sister has had to literally fight off men most of her life. She's a head turner. She hates it. She hates the way other women get jealous of the attention. She hates that men often get overzealous. She also hates that the men she invites into her life often get jealous. Right now Pretty Hae young seems sad and pathetic to me too. It might not turn out that way in the end. We'll see.

I think that line for me was so annoying to me was because it felt like such an insult to both Do Kyung and our Hae Young's characters. I would have accepted that line from a stranger, but not from the other Oh Hae Young for she knows them both.

It's such a nice lamp too. He's so cute. Yeah I'm really loving No Hae Young's very real and three dimensional characterisation. Yes she's insensitive and I think genuinely feels superior to our Oh Hae Young. Not in a mean way, but in a way that's been reinforced over and over again by their parallel lives together. I also think that she envies our Oh Hae Young's family and feels that she was perhaps better off in that way.
I also really sympathise with No Hae Young (for the treatment at the hands of Do Kyung's mother) but I still think the way she's treating Do Kyung now is just as inexcusable as her fleeing their wedding without having a single conversation with him. I no longer hate No Hae Young but I really want our Oh Hae Young to have a happy and fulfilling life.
Even though he's got some karma to repay our Oh Hae Young, I'm rooting for Do Kyung to overcome and for our couple to live happily ever after. I'm a bit worried about the visions which seem to have a melancholy air of loss that I'm worried about.

the problem was that the other Oh Hae Young dealt with the Mom problem wrongly. Because if she's trying to get away from the scheme of his Mother a year before, I don't think anything would change in the present if she wants to win Do Kyung back.
That got me thinking, how the hell does one solve a problem like Park Siblings' Mom?

A restraining order?
Seriously.
If they were still minors, emancipation. Jin-Sang would know their legal options as adults, but I have a feeling that her kids would never think in those terms.
But maybe OHY would/will!
Personality transplant?
Exile?
Witness protection?
Euthanasia By Scriptwriter?
Maybe I'm taking the character too seriously, but in the case of a real sociopath, Strategem 36.
A friend had to extricate themselves from such a person. The perpetrator moved to another state to new hunting grounds...

I just wanna ask, did they converse in banmal? I mean when our OHY speaks with PDK? Because I love the tone when he speak with our OHY <3 which I think blend with careness and love (or am I imagining things? LOL).
Anyway, I LOVE everyone character so much! (except the evil mother).

Monday please come faster.
I love this drama so much. I am quite like DooKyung, not the type to laugh but this drama made me genuinely laugh out loud.
No matter how much bad luck thrown on Our Haeyoung, she doesn't look pitiable in my eyes at all. I feel like her character is so relatable and realistic.
Dookyung's mother whiny voice is what made her character very annoying to watch. I hated her since All About Mom.. and still dislike her in Oh My Venus, I think she was also Song Hye Kyo's mom in DotS? anyway.. doesn't matter. she is talented at acting terrible mom.
I have a funny feeling that SooKyung might end up with DooKyung's lawyer friend. I don't know how to feel about it though.

The writing is uneven with some of the characters being too one note and my goodness, the writer certainly did take liberty with coincidences/incestuous relationships.
Even for a K-drama, having...
Hae-young somehow move next door to the guy who ruined her marriage;
At the same time, move right next door to her boss;
Have her boss be Do-kyung's sister;
Have the fiancee (HY#2) who left DK end up joining the company where both HY#1 and boss/sister work.
Have HY#2's mother be the ex-wife of the man DK's mother is scheming to marry.
Have HY#1's best friend be a producer who knows DK and be the impetus for the 1st meeting btwn the 2.
While I can see why the writer did all of this - kinda takes away from the believability factor (something like time travel or an alien seems more believable).
Anyhow, the character of HY#1 (not surprisingly, the best written character) and Seo Hyun-jin's performance totally makes this drama/romcom.
1st noticed SHJ in the "Three Musketeers" - but her role was somewhat limiting in that.
Then saw her in "Let's Eat 2" where I thought she stole the show.
And here, she does an even better job w/ her performance (see numerous similarities btwn SHJ's characters for LE2 and OHYA; never quite understood why there were so many who didn't like her character in LE2.
SHJ is able to hit every note required of her character who swings from sadness or depression to giddy delight or to anger or to drunken stupor (unlike most actresses, SHJ can realistically portray being drunk instead of acting drunk).
For me, SHJ joins Gong Hyo-jin and Park Bo-young as the go-to romcom actresses (who can hit the comedic elements and emotional parts with equal aplomb).
Kim Seul-gie is another who has the potential to join that group, but going to have to see her in as the lead (beyond something like SSL).

Well, the main Charakter can see glimses of the future, so it is easy for me to take in all the coincedences :)
But thx for your comment I think I will start Let's Eat 2. The question is, do I have to see Let's Eat 1 first? :)

They are stand alone. In my opinion S2 is better than S1, I was a bit disappointed when I went back and watched S1 later.
The thing is, the female lead of S1 is the focus of the show. The male lead of S1 becomes the main lead of S2 and he really steals the show hard.

Well, that whole "glimpses of the future" thing is another little trick/shortcut the writer took to make things easier (on the writing-end) and don't see how seeing the future got HY#1 to move next door, much less all the things that didn't have to do w/ HY#1 - like his sister being her boss, HY#2 returning to work at the same company, his mom angling to marry the guy that was married to HY#2's mom, etc. as DK only sees future glimpses of HY#1.
As already stated, the 2 LE series are standalone, but I would recommend watching them both (I watched LE2 1st).
LE2 has the better heroine and romance btwn the 2 leads whereas LE1 has the better supporting characters (a couple of them are really funny and there is one scene which is one of the funniest scenes I've seen in a K-romcom).
So watching both, but jn backwards order isn't a bad way to go.

I think the one not aspect of it is because we haven't gotten much screen time with some of the characters. It's only the 6th episode! It may be that we never get to see beyond the layers but considering how quickly Dk's noona was fleshed out this episode I would say give them a chance to work it out.

I would take more issue with these coincidences, but I'm pretty sure the description actually says it's a drama about coincidence and misunderstanding. This doesn't necessarily give it a pass, but there's definitely something intentionally comical about all the coincidences in this show that has me feeling forgiving of the sheer number of them. Take Jin-sang. The effect that every new coincidence between Do-kyung and his unwitting victim has on him is priceless.

LollyPip, thanks for another great recap!
In an episode with many memorable and heartwarming scenes, my favorite was DK sneaking a listen to the afternoon recordings... and hearing OHY pray for him -- to both the Lord and Buddha -- in a very matter-of-fact and conversational way.
"... If you still have some free time since you're already here, there is this guy with nice eyes who decides to live a miserable life. Please stop by to see my neighbor. Please help him to come back to himself."
I found it deeply touching.
In SU BAEK-HYANG, SHJ's character and the crown prince [later King Seong "The Holy"] prayed for each other, too. It spoke volumes about their love. I do not recall coming across this kind of thing in American TV shows in recent memory, but I watch so few of them nowadays it's possible I missed it. I really appreciate the spiritual angle I've encountered in a couple of Kdramas.
I think that when DK's transgression comes to light, OHY's having prayed for him might just mitigate her response. One can hope, with fingers crossed.

I also like that when she said that line, we had a closeup of "this guy with nice eyes" and then a zoomed out scene with the sky behind him; as if being blessed with warmth and light.
That was so beautiful. One of the most touching scenes on AOHY for me.

Also, HY#1's best friend is a very good friend for basically kicking out the guy she had over when she saw that HY#1 was in need of emotional support.
The whole thing w/ the padding for the bra was even funnier (SHJ totally sold that) in later seeing Jeon Hye-bin (who is thin and exactly well endowed) clearly getting a good amount of padding in the outfit when she first enters the company.

I think the drama has been really good at avoiding stock characters. Every character has a certain amount of depth, with good and bad interplays. So I really wonder how the Mom's character is going to pan out. Is she going to be just outright evil? An evil mother-in-law trope is still a trope, even if her reasons are, as Lollypip put it, innovative for dramaland.
Though, it would probably explain why the siblings are so close and protective of Do Kyung, which is sweet and sort of heartbreaking.
I am however curious to know what happened to Do Kyung's father. Do Kyung definitely avoided talking about him with Our Hae Yong. I really wonder whether that's going to tie into the Mother plotline. It could make her look even more terrible or maybe offer some interesting insight?

Very good point, Oshi!
Her fixation is bonkers... as her film production track record sounds underwhelming.
But isn't that one of the classic definitions of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over, and expecting a different outcome.
Maybe her taste in scripts is as questionable as her taste in fascinators. Geez, I just flashed on this:

Now that NOHY's collapse on the street has been revealed to be a panic attack, and after seeing the way her future mother-in-law treated her, I feel a bit more kindly disposed towards her, but not a whole lot. Also, the interchange between her and DK explained her smiling to hide tears and sadness. Her smile looks like a mask, which is probably why it has bugged me from the get-go.
If I had been treated by Evil Mom the way NOHY was, I might just have developed a galloping case of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which is what I think she has. NOHY may also be a bit Aspergerish.
Besides her messy family of origin, she's a middle child, from what I gather. In dysfunctional families, it's often the middle kids that are overlooked because they don't cause any trouble. The eldest frequently become the Family Hero or Black Sheep, and the youngest, the Baby... roles that bring attention. The quiet ones who muddle along are basically invisible... until something gives.
Evil Mom comes across to me as a sociopath. M. Scott Peck's landmark People of the Lie supplies some horrifying case histories, as do Alice Miller's The Drama of the Gifted Child and later works.
Writer-nim is very tricky, however, so my analysis could be pure hogwash.

I'm really enjoying this drama because there's more going on than what can be seen from a cursory glance. As much as I don't like the other OHY, we're starting to see that there's more to her than her pretty exterior. On the surface it seems that she has it all: looks, popularity, money, but now we see that her family basically ignore her and despite being constantly surrounded by adoring fans, she doesn't seem to have any real friends with sincere feelings for her. In fact, the only person who ever seemed to care for her was PDK, so it must have taken a lot to leave him, especially if she was made to believe that he didn't truly love her either.
On the other hand, our OHY may not be the prettiest or the most popular or the richest, but she has this great family supporting her (which the other OHY may have always been jealous of since she's mentioned our OHY's mother several times), real friends and a great fiance. So you can see how difficult it must be for other OHY to accept that she has PDK as well now.
I think it makes for a very interesting reversal of situations and i applaud the drama for giving us a deeper theme to what seemed to be a run of the mill cohabitation/revenge/identity confusion drama. I'm really looking forward to seeing how both OHYs react to the fact the PDK ruined the fiance and how that affects the dynamic between the various characters.

I'm enjoying this drama right now. It is a bit more unique than the normal kdrama. I'm just not all that crazy with the Do Kyung character. Don't get me wrong, Eric looks great. He looks almost 10 years younger than he really is. I've always thought he was good looking and a competent actor. I just don't like the almost total flatness of his character. Maybe he's playing it wrong, maybe he's not I can't really tell. I am crazy about Regular Hae young. When she threw that rock through his window. i was completely sold. This is a much better written character for sure. I just think she made up a bit too soon, but he got the message. I know most people here think this couple has great "chemistry". Not so much for me. I don't feel it. She's doing everything while he just stands there like a stump. I'm hoping this is just a slow build to some real romantic tension between the two. This is a rom com after all although it does appear it's headed for one of those famous Kdrama dark "turns". His mother isn't the most vile kdrama parent I've seen, she's just pretty much on par. Believe me all will be reconciled in the end, it's kdrama and parents rarely go away without being forgiven.

Park Do Kyung supposed to be an introvert, perfectionist and awkward guy. That's why Oh Hae Young feels so happy to hear his first laugh instead of being angry when he was crazy laughing over her flying 'stuff' during hug scenes.
If you looking at more, he rarely speak. Even when he speaks, he just saying a sentence. And korean viewers trolling him saying Park Do Kyung only says 4 characters when talks, such as "I already had it", "Come back and sleep", "I'm really sorry", which is very popular in Korea right now. So, in my own perspective, Eric really did great job potraying him.

I was tickled to bits when OHY declined NOHY's clingy invite to go drinking. She quickly extricated herself from the conversation in a nice, civil way. I cannot imagine a less appealing invitation.
NOHY was looking for a drinking buddy/audience -- which in the final analysis is a distraction. Getting her butt into therapy might serve her a whole lot better.

I feel bad for the other OHY, and she's not a bad person who has any evil intention, but I don't like how she ask Park Dokyung if he dates our Hae Young because she has the same name with her, or when she explained to Park Dokyung "it used to happen all the time, a lot of guys in high school tried to get to me through her. you shouldn't do that too!" that annoys me soooo bad, she's just so full of herself. but despite all that, I still hope she and our Hae Young would get along one day. 1. We've seen precious little of Tae-Jin, and aren't likely to see more of him until he's sprung from the slammer... however long that takes. I really want to know what the story is with him.
2. I suspect that JK's Dad is, in fact, alive. Heck, he could be in jail. Maybe he got framed for shenanigans by Evil Mom. Or he might be in witness protection.
3. I'm still wondering about OHY's immediate boss, Sung-Jin. I loved Kwon Min's performance as eunuch An Do-Chi in FAITH. The one Princess Nogoog put on the spot regarding relaxation tips that were even more mortifying than OHY's falsie going ballistic... I think Sung-Jin is unrequitedly interested. In the event that OHY never forgives DK when the moment of truth arrives, she might feel more comfortable with another denizen of Tier Three.

Some thoughts:
1. First off, this episode should be entitled "Restraining Order STAT!" Tolerating rock chucking from a neighbor who you're kinda attracted to but aren't really involved with is a bit much.
2. OHY's friendship! Sistas before Mistas!
3. Kim Mi Kyung! Ajumma! I want her to have a lead role in something, not just the mother. Preferably as a permed out knitting hacker, but I'll take anything at this point.
4. Drunk Sister Soo Kyung can be her Perm Apprentice in a hilarious action rom com.
5. Even if Show is trying to redeem the other OHY by spinning the blame onto EvilMom, the other OHY still has a streak of massive selfishness to her and there's still that picture of another man in Paris or wherever. Who did she run off to?
6. Just bingewatched Marriage Not Dating and this show feels so similar. Same PD I know, but on the sound side of things with the musical cues and the random funny sounds too. Perhaps same sound director?

She's narcissistic because she thinks the world revolves around her. She doesn't really have any empathy for anyone else's situation. Look at the elevator incident, Our Oh Hae Yong is ahead of her getting on the elevator, the elevator is overfill and the men push Our OHY out. Her entire reaction is "I'm kinda sorry but oh well LOL!!!!!"
NO. That is wrong. She shouldn't have gotten on there in the first place. She thinks she's ENTITLED to punt other people aside because she's been privileged that way (from looks and family both I think).

I actually loved our Oh Hae young in the beginning. But I started to get annoyed and tired of her constant complaining. Ecpessially after this episode, when she threw a rock and got angry about his recordings. Is this how she deals with her feelings ?! And he is a sound director, it's what he does, why does she thinks she has a right to tell him what to do in his own apartment and with his personal life.
I don't like how she present herself of a victim and really dependable on other people, trying to present how easy the pretty oh hae young life is, and how people treated her badly herself. It's kind pathetic, she didn't take work seriously after her cancelled wedding as she said herself, she just keeps complaining and drinking, and even show it off .For god sake she is 32 years old! It's is time to take responsibility for her life.
I didn't see that pretty Oh hae young didn't do anything bad to her, it's not her fault that she is beautiful and popular.
P.S. And by the way she works for this, she excersise, and takes care of herself, and doesn't eat like our hae young.
I can't say about her relationship with the main lead, because I don't know what actually happened before the wedding day. But when I saw moments about her parents, I really felt sympathetic for her, It's true we can't judge people just seeing their appearances, every one have their own problems.
But it's looks like most of people who actually complain about others looks, doing exactly the same thing. It's really hypocritical.
But I love the acting and most of the characters. And it's really interesting show.

She's petty and rash, just like her mother.
And she also understands and forgives things easily, just like her mother. Took her all of 2 hours to forgive Do Kyung.
It's one of her flaws (another of which is her insecurity). Can't have a perfect character.
I agree that her misery is not other Hae Young's fault at all. I really don't see what Other Hae Young did to her. I think it's Our Hae Young's fault that she's always in the other's shadows, because she keeps hiding behind her insecurity.

I do really like how they have handled exes in this show. Like you say, I'm conditioned to expect certain reactions to a breakup or an ex showing up (I'm sure there have been more, but the main one I think of is Kim Sam-soon, which had both the beginning female lead breakup and the mysteriously absent male lead's ex, and then recently One More Happy Ending).
For Hae-young, there have been real moments where I felt bad that her relationship with Tae-jin ended, mostly that flashback to fooling around in her room, through which I smiled like a fool at how cute they were and then was snapped back to reality when it ended. So even though she was moping about something that wasn't the end of the world, I felt for her when she was sad, both for the loss of Tae-jin and her feelings of rejection, particularly in that moment last episode where she said he was the only tier-one guy in her life.
As for the mysteriously absent ex, I like how the other Hae-young is done too. Because really, there's never a good excuse for why the ex disappeared--it's a hackneyed plot device to create angst for the male lead. But for Hae-young, I feel like she has a life outside Do-kyung, even if I don't know about it yet, that gave her enough pride in herself and reason to live without him. In comparison, Hee-jin from Sam-soon, though I loved her, seemed like she almost didn't have a reason to go on living if she wasn't with the male lead. Basically, with what Do-kyung's mom was doing and Hae-young's own sense of self-worth, combined with whatever this recording on her phone is, I BELIEVE that she would leave, though of course it's still ridiculous not to call.

If anything, it's more likely that DK would be NOHY's long-lost brother, given his wack-o Mom. Hmmm. No, maybe Hoon is NOHY's long-lost brother...
Daddy Oh and Mama Hwang are decent, normal folks and would not have gotten rid of OHY's sister, if she had one... And Dad sure doesn't seem to be the type to sow wild oats -- so the connection would have to be via some other family.
I have a feeling there will be plenty of time to tear our hair out when the excrement hits the fan. ;-)

I love how for our OHY, going crazy-pants is her new normal; while for DK, crazy-pants people have always been his normal. A match made in heaven!
I have a very strong suspicion about how the writer is going to solve the conundrum of DK revealing his secret to our OHY and have it not be a deal breaker for her. And a couple of mysteries will be solved with it as well. But I don't want my prediction to spoil anyone elses fun, so I'll just wait for the story to unfold. If I'm right, or wrong, either way I'll enjoy until the end.

I think "nice eyes" is an understatement. :D Eric has this really smoldering way of looking at a heroine that makes you weak in the knees and melt in a puddle of goo in seconds. He did a lot of that in "Discovery of Romance" to Jung Yu-mi and I wish he'd make eyes with our Hae-young more, so we can witness his great talent for it in this drama too.
I'm now so darn curious to find out if our Hae-young's premonition that Do-kyung will someday cry because of her will also come true like all the other fool-proof premonitions Do-kyung has ever had of her.
Lovin' every episode and all the characters from the main to the side. Noona Soo-kyung is hilariously acted yet subtly garbed with hidden depth. This actress can evidently do melo when she wants (see Page Turner) and downright crazy too (see Producers) if she wills it.
I can't wait to find out and see how Do-kyung's world get uncontrollably upside down the moment our Hae-young finds out how he unintentionally but severely damaged the man she loved and ruined her supposedly bright future with him. Esp now that he's fallen for her but doesn't know it yet.

What if the recording contains, Do Kyung and his mom's convo about the other Hae Young's parents? What if he actually said some thing worse about her parents.

Hi,
I think TJ is coming back in next few episodes which will cause DK to go crazy.
I don't know in real life I would have never forgive DK if it would have happened to me. ( not in this life) But bcoz this is a drama and we want to see our OHY happy that's make me root for both of them but can pass what DK did.
I don't want to see our OHY forgives him that easily like other Kdramas.
I dont know why i have feeling that DK start worrying about her out of pity and then same pain connect them to love each other . IF this situation would not happened I don't think DK would have given out OHY chance.
But liking the drama , watched episodes so many times bcoz I am rom com fan. They both leads doing pretty good job but bcoz of Our OHY character ( and liking for DK) I am liking DK.
I like reading this comments section , its like book club where you discuss with people who are passionate about some which you also like passionately. I dont know if we see any negative comment about this drama/character , how we gonna react ?

Monday is just 3 more days away!!!!! Come to me !!! I'm ready!!
I agree with alms all the comments on this episode. Especially the psychology behind other Oh Have Young. Do Kyung can't be expected to take her back because his mother is a B. I won't accept it if they pull that stunt on us. DK already feels guilt about our OHY, he can't carry the fault of other OHY not being more open and letting him in on what his evil mother was doing to her. The fact that she didn't say anything for A WHOLE YEAR makes me unsympathetic to her. Whatever was on the recording does not warrant leaving for a year then coming back as if nothing happened. I mean WTH?! She can't really expect him to be ok with how she handled that situation. Like many already said, she is glossing over the pain he felt and almost taking DK for granted. As if there is no one else as amazing as her who he could possible fall for. She is wrong and hopefully she soon sees that our OHY is as amazing and spectacular.
DK is a wonderful, yet not as open as he should be,guy. The fact that our OHY is so honest and straight up with her feeling i thing forces DK to be too. He is more open to her than he is to anyone else-- even his friend. I loved when he was listening in as if this may come back when he no longer has her near by. He will listen in on our her voice, her laugh and even her farts LOL I can't wait for when he won't be able to deny his feeling not only to himself but to everyone else.
Im glad I tuned in to this one, It a gem...for now.
Thank you for the recap!!

I hate/love how this drama just has me wishing my weekends away. I have a bridal shower I'm trying to plan here, but I can't stop thinking about this drama. I'm hopeless.

Am so emotionally invested in this drama; sometimes in the middle of the week, out of the blue, feels sick in the pit of my stomach, dreading the moment our Hae Kyung knows about what Do Kyung did, ugh! Our Hae Kyung, even with all the insecurities, have a really strong sense of pride. What if she thought everything that Do Kyung did for her is based on guilt, won't she be very, very, very hurt? *bawling
Really hope the moment of truth come soon, so can enjoy the gorgeously blooming romance without a sense of doom...
Love how the show portrays the other Hae Young, preparing us to hate her but couldn't help to symphatise when she finally appeared.
Also, the scary curl in the corner of Do Kyung's lips when he told the other Hae Young that she should've died, totally reminds me of Shinhwa Bangsong: Villain Acting episode (maybe coz have rewatched around, uhh, 12 times or more...). Super sinister, and hundredfolds scarier than Eric when poker-faced Do Kyung was the one who did it!

My favorite character in this series is Park Do Kyung. He seems the most pitiful character ever as male lead in korean drama and it make me can't handle to root for his happiness.
He's an introvert who's very quiet in his whole family. His mother never love him sincerily and just take his money and he still can't do anything about that. His best friend indirectly make him bad person by stupid revenge while he was drunk. His ex lover left him in the altar. Oh Hae Young loves him but due to his mistakes he can't love her back. He keep trying to protect Oh Hae Young but Oh Hae Young always think he choose his ex lover more.
Park Do Kyung, what a life you got.

I legit can't wait for our Hae Young's ex-fiance too come back into the drama. What will she do when she realises the DK is the reason that she didn't marry
Pretty Hae Young is actually the weaker one, she wasn't willingly to risk it all for her love so she doesn't deserve him

I still have not start watching this drama, but hadn't you notice that tvN tends to do their dramas a little bit more real when it comes to the relationships between the main characters??? Or that they create personalities that are closer to what exists in the real world??

I think the sensitivity of PDK recording machine is too extreme lol
it is still acceptable that when ohy doing activities in her bedroom can be heard/recorded, but when she is in the bathroom and talk slowly to herself how did the machine record it clearly?! doesn't even makes sense

I'm months and months late to this show, but I figured I'd post just for the sake of my fellow latecomers.
I really like the juxtaposition of the two hae youngs. Right after the other hae young was telling her ex-fiance that she had always hidden her feelings for his sake (by smiling when she's sad), our hae young literally throws a rock through his window to let him know how upset she is.
I'd imagine most people appreciate the second approach more. Hiding your true feelings doesn't lend itself to a lasting relationship.
