Moorim School cuts down episode count to 16

It’s only in its third week, but KBS seems ready to give up on its fantasy youth drama Moorim School, and is giving the show an episode cutdown from 20 down to 16. (Some outlets hedge that the broadcaster is in talks, but the majority report this as a done deal. Fans will probably want to prepare themselves to say an early goodbye.)

I’m not sure if it’s a huge blow to get the news now or an act of mercy; the broadcaster cited low ratings and negative reception as their main drivers behind the decision, and maybe ending quicker will be good for all involved. Moorim School’s ratings have stayed between 3.5% to 5.1%, which are low, and the drama about youngsters learning to discover and channel their special supernatural talents at an unconventional school has been generally perceived as a B-list show.

Still, while numbers for Moorim School are low, they’re actually not substantially lower than other dramas KBS has aired in this timeslot: High school rom-com Sassy Go Go logged numbers as low as 2.2% and only topped out at 4.3%, while before it, Strange Daughter-in-Law was in much the same general range, between mostly logging 4% to 5% ratings. Same for quirky cop mystery I Remember You, though at least that one drew critical praise.

There may also be another reason in play, with talk emerging of a dispute between KBS and production company JS Pictures over budget. The producers reportedly asked for additional funds, which KBS refused, leading to a shutdown of filming last week. (Some sources say the filming break was due to cold weather, while others point to the budget dispute.) The drama is set to resume shooting on January 27, when they’ll film material for Episodes 12 and 13. That doesn’t leave them much room to alter the story to fit the new length, and the source explained that the actors are worried about the story changing from the planned trajectory.

(Girlfriday: “Remember the original articles about how this show was going to shift paradigms and burst free of the stagnant drama market?” Javabeans: “Isn’t that mean to point it out now?” Girlfriday: “Do it anyway.”)

The follow-up drama to Moorim School was set to be the Park Shin-yang underdog vehicle Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul-ho, but rather than moving that drama up two weeks, KBS is considering filling the space between with a four-episode short drama called Babysitter, which comes from the Sword and Flower PD Kim Yong-soo.

honestly, i kinda like the solid 4 episodes. Sucks on Korean entertainment industry is the usual testing phase. Editing is good i will say. For me that has been used to a lot of dramas korean or here in the Philippines, this is a nice one.

Sad though that the character progression will alter due to axing it down to 16 instead of 20...

Kudos to the cast, Hyun Woo since I saw him from SBS To the Beautiful you is talented as he is.. He is also on MBC's Queen Seondok... Hongbin is also good on his role as a spoiled chaebol heir. Same with Seo Ye ji.. she's is noona of my dreams.. lols..
Shin Hyun joon is cool :D

I watch it again and again... I just love the drama. Hong Bin and the other 3 leads are good in their role and I feel that they are getting comfortable into the roles. Other actors too. Let's continue to encourage the cast while we enjoy the drama:)

it aches so badly while i scroll all the way down seeing that majority of the comments were negative ... I have to confess that i LOVE this drama sooooooo much ,it's the first time i stood up and say something publicly>< Seriously? was it that bad ??
Moorim School was the reason why im excited for mondays and tuesdays !!! cutting down the episodes wasn't a problem as long as it's not ending halfway ..
But it just hurts so much to see how this drama brought that many negative issues /.\
nevertheless ,MOORIM SCHOOL FIGHTHINGGG !!!! <3

I love this drama despite the ratings being low I think it's a great drama. Is it perfect no drama is even one of my recent favorite historical dramas Empress Ki had problems but I suck with it until the end. Moorim School is not your average kdrama which might have contributed to the ratings low. I love the diverse cast! Hopefully it won't get cut anymore than 16.

wow, i am shocked that SGG gotlow ratings, I love that show very much, as much I love Moorim School... its sad they're cutting it to 16.

I hope it would be 20 so they can explain the story more (like the time when Shi Woo has this supernatural power, and with that mysterious pendant)

I like the story other than I am a fan of the former child actor LHW - I watch all his stint and he was good and child like (innocence). He was a bad ass but kind hearted actor, cutee too in Beautiful you - but now the story is so dragging and slow - too many mind thoughts script - if you see the actors are great that because they can project what was asked from them even not speaking. Its just the story is great but they seem not to know it l:

Shiwoo: fix his career and find his family and protect the power he have for others and then his love life with seon deok.

Seon Deok: graduates, helps her family, help his father be out of his grief of guilty living the child behind but also thinking of getting a glimpse of power of chintamani but he is not a greedy person naturely so he tried to save the child. SD holds the chintamani she didn't know from Shi woo. ShiwooSeonDeok - Lovestory

ChiA: graduates, got his respect from his dad and stops his dad from being greedy - learn to improve himself and stop being all about himself. See Heong Ah as for him and not seon deok.

Heong Ah: graduates, reunited to her brother Shi woo and dad cheon young

Dad and dean: reunited and fight together

Professors: support and fight the new dean

The other students: graduates and be a good moorim alumni and fight the bad people who are greedy....

All these should be revealed from episode 1-6 and the rest of the episodes cover how each one learned or failed. Oh they wasted too much actors capability.

I starting loosing interest when I realized that you had made the girly looking guy the hero but I kept watching anyway hoping that it would turn out different unfortunately it ended up being the one that was the least likely to get the girl (girls don't like girly looking guys) getting the girl and the one that put the least effort into learning martial arts being the winner not to mention he back-stabbed his friend to get the girl whoever wrote this series is lame

The show is really good to me. It's different and it doesn't seem to be copying other shows (which is super nice). Also, it's pretty appropriate from what I've watched so far too. It's annoying when I think I find a cute k-drama that I think is going to be appropriate and it ends up not being so. I think the acting is actually good compared to US shows and movies because acting isn't that great anymore in the US. Plus, PG13 is more like R and R rated movies/shows are just terrible and should be avoided because they're too inappropriate. Sorry for the little rant but this show is really good to me at least. Maybe the acting isn't the best but at least it's not as bad as some of the shows and movies here.

I'm watching this series on 2021 (because this drama has Seo Yea Ji from It's Okay Not to Be Okay)

I think her stylist in Moorim School doesn't do her much justice (compared to that It's Okay Not to Be Okay)

I love Moorim School that I wish they have more episodes.

This is one of very few kdrama that I can binge without dragging myself to finish it. I'm in my 30s (I'm not a teen)

I think this drama has the vibe of Harry Potter (minus the magic element- the actors &actresses act better than those in Harry Potter) & the vibe of The Original TW (minus the vampire & werewolf stuff)

The storyline is good compared to many overrated dramas. I love the bromance, the friendships, the family love in this drama.

The loveline between Suk Doo & Shi Woo felt very natural, very beautiful.

The misunderstandings & conflicts in episodes are well executed, they don't drag the issues for several episodes. (I've had my share watching high-rated kdrama with big shot actors; but quite frustrated with how the storyline dragged for episodes. So I really appreciate Moorim School for not doing that.)

I wish Moorim School will have season 2 with Seo Yea Ji's bit character from It's Okay Not to Be Okay. Just a bit will do. She's a badass in Moorim School, but more badass in It's Okay Not to Be Okay.
