Action blockbuster movie Pirates to get a sequel

Producers have announced plans to make a sequel to historical action movie The Pirates, and I suppose that if ever a movie were primed to be turned into a franchise, this would be it. It’s got the simple premise, appealing cast, big-budget effects, and flashy action sequences that make for crowd-pleasing entertainment, with the first movie logging 8.6 million admissions and ranking 19th on Korea’s all-time box office list.

Granted, I’m not so sure that we really need another installment in the story of pirates and bandits duking it out on the high seas (and sometimes on land) to outmaneuver each other (the driving motivation in the first movie was to recover a royal seal from the whale that swallowed it)… but these blockbuster franchises aren’t about needing narrative, are they? The Pirates was pure popcorn movie fun, and I can easily see how you’d preserve the general setup of the first movie, reset the conflict, and rustle up a second movie’s worth of swordfighting scenes and rollicking action.

According to director Lee Seok-hoon, sequel plans were always in consideration as far back as during production on the first Pirates. His one rule was that the actors would have to return in the sequel, and given everybody’s schedules, it looks like it’ll take a while before they can make it work. But hey, the wait will be worth it if he can bring back Sohn Ye-jin as the badass pirate leader, Kim Nam-gil as the roguish bandit, and Yoo Hae-jin as perpetual scene-stealer. It’d be worth it for Sohn Ye-jin’s fierceness (and smokin’ pirate eyeliner) alone.

The Pirates 2 is currently in the development stage, and will keep the same writer and director from the first film, with Harimao Pictures producing and Lotte Entertainment as investor. Writer Chun Sung-il is no stranger to flashy action told with a speedy pace that gets you to mostly overlook plot holes; he wrote the cute rom-com action movie Level 7 Civil Servant (also the drama, though let’s not speak of that), as well as action dramas Chuno and Runaway Plan B. Director Lee previously directed movies Dancing Queen and Two Faces of My Girlfriend and has since added another successful film to his filmography, the recently released Himalayas starring Jung Woo and Hwang Jung-min.

Director Lee projects that Pirates 2 would have to be a summer release, which means it would likely shoot this year and release the next.

This was basically Joseon Pirates of the Caribbean by way of Moby Dick. Fun, but fluffy and forgettable, though it's cool to have a smash hit movie led by an actress.

There's no point to this unless they get back Sohn Ye-jin, though.

I love Sohn Ye-jin but honestly I thought the first movie was mostly boring, but that's just me.

Love her too. Looking forward more to “Princess Deokhye,” with Park Hae-il.
Too bad the novel has no English translation.

Please NO.....
First installment was fun. But that's all. Not worth repeat. And I am pretty sick of Kim Nam-Gil's pairing with Son Ye-Jin. Please find him another leading lady. Nothing wrong with her. But why must we seem them paired again and again?

Sohn Ye-jin can do much better than this. I hope she declines it. I couldn't even finish it.

Movie was not great, but worth it for Sohn Ye-jin, Sohn Ye-jin's costume and eyebrows, and Sohn Ye-jin's awesome underwater scene with the whale.

Was the film any good? It's on netflix and I've been wondering should I watch it.

not even... I only watched it for SYJ and CJR. It was a waste of 2+ hours to be honest. I only found it moderately enjoyable near the end, and CJR's acting was not on par with the rest of the cast, so if you look for her in it she stands out in a bad way.

Sorry, but who is CJR? I can't find anyone on the cast list without those initials?

I think she/he is talking about Sulli. Her real name is Choi Jin-ri.

I'd find some reason for complaint about the movie in a theater, but it is still better than 99% of what I find on Netflix. It holds together pretty well and the actors and costume designers are having a great old time.

The weakest acting is from Sulli, who just looks like a sweet, cheerful idol star who got signed on to dress up like a pirate and stand next to the real actors. I was shocked after seeing this movie and her bland variety appearances to learn she'd quite F(x) to be an actress. She gives no sign of having the personality for the job.

It's great that a movie with cast aspects like this gets a sequel (A list, female lead, leads with good chemistry, veterans along side less exposed actors), but I think I can speak for the majority when I say we've had more than enough of what the director had to offer in the first installment. The story has potential to be bigger and better, though.

Okay, I've got Netflix on tap and now, after all the criticism, I've GOT to watch it and enjoy the good parts all over again.

I really liked this movie. It was a humorous action packed movie that was fully entertaining. It wasn't a deep movie or anything but I watched it twice because of how fun it was. I wouldn't mind a sequel at all.

One serious upside to 'Pirates,' if you are a Sohn Ye-jin fan, in particular: as the female lead in this movie, she is actually a LEAD character, not just a love interest for the male lead. SYJ plays a proud and brave captain of pirates, like several historically famous female pirates of the China Seas, and she doesn't get pinched on air time like she has been some of her dramas.
