The Bean Count [Year in Review, Part 1]
by girlfriday
Welcome to The Bean Count, a new feature we’re trying out this year, which arose, if we’re being totally honest, out of a half-loopy brainstorming session of thinking up new, improved (?) ways to weigh in on the past year’s drama offerings. The Beanie Polls are all about you guys, and the Editors’ Picks are our chance to highlight the shows we felt merited special recognition. And of course we have our individual reviews coming up a little later this month.
But sometimes the critically acclaimed shows aren’t the ones that stick with you, and we wondered how our staff would vote if the question wasn’t “Which drama was the best?” but more along the lines of “Let’s say we gave you beans. And you could award a show however many beans you had based on whatever reason you wanted. How would you give away your beans? By the way, in this scenario beans are a good thing.”
That was the birth of The Bean Count, an ill-fated attempt by writers to do math.
Even nonsensical games need rules, so here were ours:
- 1. You get one bean for every 2015 show you’ve watched in its entirety. (You also earn one bean per currently airing show if you’ve seen every available episode thus far.) So: If you watched fifty shows, you get fifty beans. Five shows, five beans.
- 2. You can allot your beans to whatever 2015 shows you choose, whatever your reasoning (or lack thereof) may be. All your beans to one show? Okay. One bean to every show? Okay too.
You’ll see from our chart that some people weighted their beans heavily for the few shows they really loved, while others were more inclined to spread their love around. It was fun for us to see the results too, because we didn’t discuss our bean allotments with each other, and were curious to see how everyone’s beans would stack up. We weren’t allowed to collude with each other or give each other beans, and it made every decision feel weighted with significance. Sure, I might feel like giving a show’s bean to another show, but what if that show got left off the bean tally entirely? Could I deal with that sense of responsibility?
Suddenly every single bean started feeling extremely precious, and we’d constantly be saying things like, I don’t know if I can afford to give this show a bean, but what if it gets zero beans?! Did I really love this show three beans as much as that show? Why didn’t I watch another show so I could have one more bean to give? Can I manage to watch a full show in the next three days to earn another bean?
FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS, y’all.
In the end, we think the bean count revealed a lot about each recapper’s personal preferences, as well as what stood out for us as a group in 2015. There’s a nifty chart where you can see how everyone distributed their beans, and a handy pie chart version as well. Because who doesn’t like pie?
Play along! Tell us how many beans you earned this year, and how you’d allot them to the dramas of 2015.

I sadly only have 9 beans... so that means I can't be generous and give a bean here and there for the shows that I actually enjoyed watching but weren't as high up on my kdrama favorites of all time.
That being said! Healer is LIFE.
Must. Give. All. Beans. To. Healer.
(but I am also really loving AM1988 too so I will spare some...)
Healer: 7
Answer Me 1988: 2
She Was Pretty
Angry Mom
Pinocchio
Sassy Go Go
Oh My Ghostess
Who Are You - School 2015
Persevere Goo Hae Ra
I wish I could give beans to Ji Soo just because he was totally bean-worthy this year.

Haha, I love how the bean count reveals personalities, definitely see some people trying to give every show a bean, and you tell who likes what type of dramas: romcoms vs thrillers etc.
From the above list, I loved healer and I remember you, the romcoms just didn't tickle me in the right way this year haha
just a suggestion for next time, to split up each editor, 'cause I have to keep checking which bean colour is whose, but i love this bean count!!

I love that Healer fans are so chill about the people who say they don’t like the show. As in they just ignore those people, haha. I’ve hardly ever seen a Healer fan try to convince someone who didn’t like it that it’s actually amazing, or call them stupid because they didn’t enjoy it.
Healer is my favorite drama but I get why people thought it was overhyped, especially if they didn't watch it while it was airing. I have plenty of dramas that I have watched after hearing rave reviews and felt let down!
Anyway, I have earned 11 beans this year and I distribute them like so:
Healer: 4
Twenty Again: 3
She Was Pretty: 2
Oh My Ghostess: 1
The Producers: 1

I love it too! I often will see Healer fans explaining why they like it so much, but I've rarely seen any trying to force someone to view it the same way as them.
Honestly, the way I see it, if you don't respond to a drama that same way as I do, that's completely fine. That's the beauty of life. I just don't necessarily like to see people trivializing my reasons for watching it.
We will all have dramas that we don't enjoy as much as others. Last year this happened to me with YFAS. I liked a lot about it, but didn't love it nearly as much as anyone else. But I was at least able to recognize that people must have had valid reasons for finding it so special. And now, with Healer, I finally understand what that's like, lol.

i gotta own up.
i did try to explain to someone here, after readings weeks of chunks of anti-sentiments about how undeserving is Healer. finally one day i can't reach bottle neck, so i wrote a lengthy reply, while it should be nothing offensive, but i felt so rotten about myself pouring how much Healer is "not really so...".
i have seen many dramas, too lazy to count beans.
but worthy of beans should be: in proportion of 10:
HEALER (if i can give all my beans to one, it shall be Healerya): 5 beans (if not all 10 beans)
I Remember You: 2 beans
Remember War of Son: (2 beans)
Twenty again: 1 bean (sharing with some others)
loving something is a individual adoration, did not force it on others.

Honestly a little disappointed that Hogu's love only got one bean. People should really give the drama a chance, i think it tackles all the important issues like sexuality, pregnancy before marriage, rape, first love and a honest cutie like ho gu trying to figure it all out. I'd give it all the beans it deserve! (With some to spare for healer, of course)

IKR! It is such an underrated drama! I voted it for a few times for 'underrated drama' category in the votes!
Although 'healer''s television ratings are low, but the discussion online internationally and domestically made up for it. 'Hogu's love' suffers from low ratings and relatively low discussion rate despite its strong themes and near-perfect rom com tone.
It is definitely not the best drama this year to me (healer and answer me 1988 are the best to me), but it really deserve more attention sighs.

I've got 24 beans!
Healer - 3 (legit awesome and romantic)
Ho-gu's Love - 1 (thoughtful)
GWSS - 1 (adorable couple)
School 2015 - 1 (loved Kim So-hyun, but that loveline...)
The Producers - 1 (4 leads are awesome when together)
I Remember You - 4 (BADASS.)
Oh My Ghostess - 1 (laugh-out-loud funny & romantic)
She Was Pretty - 2 (winning couple... and Park Seo-joon)
Six Flying Dragons - 1 (1st sageuk ever & Moo-hyul)
Sassy, Go Go - 1 (cheesy, but amazing cast; JI SOO)
Bubblegum - 1 (never been more frustrated w/ writing)
Orange Marmalade - 1 (eh...Yeo Jin-goo can do better)
Yong-pal - 1 (honestly all was lost when Stephanie left)
Answer Me 1988 - 5 (I just LOVE everything about this show more than I can imagined, especially when I didn't expect much from and it turned out to be so good. Also, Team Jung-hwan! :D)
[P. S. Pinocchio was considered a 2014 drama, and if I've to give beans to it for a 2014 version, then I'd give all that I can get. Yay!]
Looking forward to your reviews, Dramabeans team! Your recaps are always a delight to read :) Also, I miss your awesome podcasts!

Oh this is a fun idea. :D
I've watched twelve 2015 dramas. I've seen more dramas than I initially thought. But I tend to be picky and watch only a few at a time, so now I wish I had extra beans. LOL
There were good parts along w/ the bad parts in the dramas I didn't give beans to.
Healer - 1
Dr. Frost - zero
Punch - 1
Kill Me, Heal Me - 2
Falling for Innocence - zero
Let's Eat 2 - 1
Missing Noir M - 2 (Enjoyed this show, but the last episode wasn't done as well as the prior eps. Wouldn't mind a 2nd season though)
Hidden Identity - 1
My Beautiful Bride - 3 (FAVORITE THRILLER DRAMA this yr!)
Scholar Who Walks the Night - zero (if I had an extra bean, I would give it to this show for Lee Jun Ki's acting <3)
The Time I've Loved You - zero
She Was Pretty - 1

I wish Healer is just about a healer and his circumstance surround him rather than about their past that related to them, because is just so predictable and become more boring. Like "Heartless City" Kind of story because telling a story from an errand boy point of view is so much more interesting. But maybe It must be due to Chi Jang Wook limit range they don't want to go there. Or, It's never going to that road . The romance is also is sooo simplisitic and abit shallow. Lets admit it their world is so much difference in one another, there is no way they will get along that easily because of their chemistry and their comfortabilty together alone. This drama has so much more interesting if execute differently. That's why punch take the cake for me, because their character is much much more human. If I ever give credit, It's the Healer directing instead that make it seems much more human than it seems and certain scene just touch my heart because of the directing alone.
This year there is no particular a good drama for me. Any recomendation?

I really enjoyed Punch, I Remember You, Missing Noir M, and AM1988. Highly recommend the first two, but that's just me, you might not like thrillers. Punch is a very good political thriller though, worth the watch! :)

Well, obviously Ji Chang Wook is not the greatest actor around but he's more than capable to carry a show.
If they focus more on the errand boy and the present, then it's fine. If not, and as we watch the drama, they focus on the past and the consequences to the present, then it's also fine.
It'd work out differently, but the two scenarios could wonderfully work. For me, the Healer's charm is actually on the writing and acting, the directing, not so much.
I just love Ji Chang Wook both as the healer boy and clumsy Park Bong Soo.

@ kanz :
Watch Heartless City and you will know what I mean. I don't need to get lecture to enjoy a drama, Their world is just too idealize and simplisitic. I love the fact that healer has flaws, like his desire to kill someone he hates. HEaler is a criminal, and i would love it if they emphasis and his world and picture the consequences of his job he choose. IMO, it seems He was just a plot device to unfold past mistery that is so uninteresting to me

I only watch 12 dramas in entirety, other dramas this year either I skipped them or I only watch for few eps then dropped it.
So I have 12 beans:
Healer: 1
Kill Me Heal Me: 1
Angry Mom: 1
Oh My Venus: 1
Heard It Through The Grapevine: 1
Mask: 2
Oh My Ghost: 2
Twenty Again: 2
The Village: 1
Because of these, I have no beans to give to Producers and Let's Eat 2! *first world problems*
Though I'm not too disappointed not to give any bean to Warm and Cozy because they deserve so! *grumbles*

I find the results surprising as i thought dramabeans editors like 'She was pretty' and 'school 2015' as i read the reviews.
And 'Healer' and 'Answer me 1988' are just....wow! Hands down victory hahas. Well the 2 dramas are the best dramas this year for me, i will give them a lot of my beans too.

Well, I've got 18 beans, which is seriously bringing my life choices into question, but oh well. Here is my take:
4 to Healer
3 to Angry Mom
3 to Twenty Again
2 to Oh My Ghostess
1 to I Remember You
1 to Sassy Go Go
1 to Ex-Girlfriend's Club
1 to Hogu's Love
1 to Let's Eat 2
1 to Orange Marmalade
I feel bad leaving Producers and She Was Pretty off the list because I love basically the whole cast for each of those, but the shows just didn't really come together for me. Those 2 were my disappointments. YongPal I want to sue for false advertising. He was only "YongPal" for like 3 episodes, then it was just a politcal/family melo, and that's not what I signed up for.
I haven't watched Answer Me 88 yet so I didn't have to allot beans for that one, but I'm sure I will want to after I watch.

Hmm, only 6 beans (watching an older 86 episode sageuk as well will do that to you). It's tough, but I'd say:
Six Flying Dragons - 3 beans (I may regret this later if it falls apart in the second half, but right now it's everything I want a show to be)
Healer - 2 beans (not deeply serious, but so, so much fun)
Kill Me, Heal Me - 1 bean (messy, but Ji Sung is awesome and some lovely writing payoffs towards the end)
I appreciated a lot of things about Punch and Angry Mom, but they never fully engaged me emotionally. Yongpal is the only other show I finished, and I'm still wondering why I bothered (although the first 6 episodes were great fun).

Before I looked at the legend, I wondered, "Who is orange bean?" Without her, six dramas would have no beans at all. LollyPip likes spreading the wealth. odilettante was very consistent -- either four beans or two beans. Thank you, girlfriday, for your one bean to School 2015. It was certainly a crack drama for the majority of its run, and that, in itself, deserves a bean. Conclusion from the chart: Need to watch Last.
I have 20 beans.

Wait, I want to have another chart - who did the recappers steal beans from? In other words, what drama was so bad they lost their bean? :)(That's sounds painful. Can they grow it back?)

What a shame for you. The real fun starts at ep 8. Just look at the comments of the recaps from 1 - 7 and then ep 8 onwards...

I only have 7 beans. I meant to watch Heart to Heart and Angry Mom but didn't get around to it. Now I regret it lol. Also, I don't think I'm going to count Pinocchio for this year.
Healer (I was really really looking forward to this drama, but then I watched it and was disappointed.)
Punch (I enjoyed it, but no beans. Tbh, I have other shows I watch in English, and enjoy kdramas for the cute, cheesy romance and comedy. So at the end of the day, I just wouldn't consider it a favorite. I'm surprised I even chose to watch this one lol)
Oh My Ghostess 3 (it helps that time has passed since I've watched this because I absolutely hated the ending. SPOILERS The fact that the killer was shown alive and walking and talking as if he wouldn't have motor/language probs or be dead after that brain injury was so stupid. Plus, he needed to die. They showed him drowning my heroine in the bath tub! I was so mad!!!)
Oh My Venus 2 (SJS is the Korean love of my life!)
Twenty Again 1 (I felt for the main character. I wouldn't watch it again but still, I remember really looking forward to the new episodes)
Producers (I think at the end of the day the episodes were just so long that looking back it sucked some of the excitement out of the episodes. Loved the 4 leads though)
Bubblegum 1 (really enjoying the directing; I have to say, I love it when the characters are talking to one another but it's shot with them looking straight into the camera. Very pretty shots with good music. However, depending on how it ends I might change my mind!)
I'm already unsure of my choices lol. Can I cheat and split a bean between Twenty Again and Producers? Hehe! I feel like Producers was a better show, but I always felt like the episodes needed to just end already lol which I didn't feel with Twenty Again. Really takes you out of the moment.

So I tried calculating the number of shows I watched this year (which made me realize I really need to get a life- soon).
I then tried to give out beans to my favorite shows. Trying to chose between Healer, Pinocchio and IRY and then realizing that not much is left for KMHM, Producers, Sassy, 20Again, My ex GF, School, Angry Mom, Misaeng, etcetra etcetra.
So basically I lost all my beans(marbles?) in the process. :P
I wonder how the Dramabeans recappers and the fans are doing it!
I frankly just can not.
