Oh My Venus: Episode 6

Joo-eun’s hard work starts to yield results… some expected, and some very much unexpected. Her evident physical changes begin to enact emotional changes in the people around her, affecting how they relate to her and each other. And as the past slowly starts to become clearer, present actions begin to make more sense – let’s hope they lead to honesty and healing.

EPISODE 6 RECAP

Joo-eun gets all worked up over Anna Sue and Young-ho’s scandal (since he’s let her think he’s gone to the US to see her), but starts her workout faithfully. He arrives home in the middle of a balancing exercise, making her tip over and knock both of them to the floor. Young-ho sees Joo-eun’s noticeably thinner face, and her dimple winks at him, mesmerizing him instantly.

He ignores her complaints and smiles in wonderment, poking a finger into her dimple. He’s so utterly charmed that her grumpiness flies right over his head. Flustered, Joo-eun puts her glasses back on, and Young-ho ruins the mood by pointing out that people lose weight from the top down, and her tummy hasn’t changed. Ugh, stop while you’re ahead.

But Young-ho is in a great mood, and admits that it’s nice to hear her voice in person again. Joo-eun asks about his trip “to the States,” and Young-ho vaguely says that he experienced a moment he’s been waiting for for a long time. At that, Joo-eun screams in his face, “You bastard, get over here!” HA, she means her stuffed sloth, who she’s named You Bastard.

After beating the crud out of You Bastard, Joo-eun is still angry over Young-ho’s comment that he had a moment he’s been waiting for while he was gone. Thinking he was with Anna Sue, she assumes they had a sexy night together, and laughs wryly to herself. She finds Young-ho glaring suspiciously at a snack she left out for him, muttering that she regrets making it, when he says he doesn’t eat carbs or sodium.

Joo-eun argues that home-cooked meals are warm and comforting, with lots of flavor, grumbling that it’s no good to be so sexy when he lives a bland life. He ignores her, more curious about the meal cover she used to keep the food fresh, and she asks if his mother never used such a thing. Sadly, he says he’s never seen one before.

Joo-eun wanders off saying she’s going to get a massage, and Young-ho says massages are best from a man. But then he imagines Joo-eun, moaning ecstatically while getting a sexy massage from a muscle-bound masseur (holy crap that guy is huge), and panics a little. He hollers at her not to get a massage, offering to do it himself.

HAHA, and then he just lets her use his massage chair. That’s cheating! But he covers her torso with a pillow, saying that the bouncing of her body looks suggestive, and he doesn’t want her getting too turned on. Right, I’m sure it’s her comfort you’re thinking about.

Now Joo-eun is embarrassed, and Young-ho seems to be enjoying her discomfort. She asks him to stop the chair, dropping to banmal, and he pretends offense and leans way over her to chastise her for speaking to her coach that way. He’s right on top of her while she bounces underneath him — this is awesome.

In spite of their suggestive position, Joo-eun proposes that they act more like friends from now on. Young-ho asks if she means the kind of friends who kiss, and adjusts the chair vertically, bringing her even closer to himself. Joo-eun’s heart starts to pound as she remembers their accidental “kiss” during jiu jitsu practice.

Stepmom brings Grandma tea and offers her a massage, but it’s obvious that Grandma prefers to keep her at arm’s length. She says that people talk about her as if she cares more about the company than her dead daughter, and that she somehow used her son-in-law by having him marry Stepmom, and she says that it hurts her to know that people think that way. She compliments Stepmom on the way she’s raised Young-joon, but warns her not to give him any ideas about inheriting the company.

Ji-woong bounces into bed with Young-ho to welcome him home with an attack-hug, excited to hear that he’s gotten a clean bill of health. He chatters about Ma’am and how she wasn’t kidding about being Daegu’s Venus, and Young-ho admits that her long-unseen dimples are pretty cute.

Joon-sung spends the evening in his car, perking up when he sees an older woman walking past. He recalls someone telling him that “they” refused to met him — is this his birth mother? He sighs and heads home, just missing the woman arriving at her door to find herself confronted with a drunk, abusive husband.

Young-ho is woken the next morning by all three of his house guests grinning at him, excited for Joo-eun’s weigh-in. They hold their breath as she steps on the scale… then celebrate. Joo-eun and the boys bounce in circles, but Young-ho is curiously unmoved. He asks why they’re doing this, and Joo-eun and Joon-sung both turn to Ji-woong to shoot him dirty looks.

Apparently, they promised to grant Joo-eun a wish if she lost fifteen kilos (about thirty-three pounds), and Young-ho waves at them to go grant her wish and let him sleep. But the boys insist that all three of them have to do it, so Young-ho reluctantly asks what the wish is. When Joo-eun says it’s to live as Kang Joo-eun for a day, both boys slink away like they’re expecting to get swatted, hee.

All she wants is for the guys to experience some freedom in their lives, but Young-ho doesn’t like the idea — that’s how she became unhealthy in the first place. Joo-eun comes prepared for his objections, showing him her improved blood results, and says there’s room for compromise. Being unhealthy for one day won’t hurt them.

First stop — the coffee shop, where Joo-eun orders everyone fancy drinks with extra whipped cream. Young-ho orders a plain Americano, and Joo-eun has to re-enforce that today is her day to make the decisions.

Hyun-woo’s ex comes back from the States without having found John Kim (mostly because he wasn’t there) but with some interesting footage of Anna Sue. He’s certain the man she’s with in the film is John Kim, but he’s less concerned with fact than he is with getting a good story. If he’s wrong, let John Kim sue him — at least he’ll get to see his face that way.

Joo-eun arrives at work in a great mood, at least until she runs into Soo-jin and her supervisor. He chastises Joo-eun for focusing more on her diet than her job, ordering her to take the harassment case Soo-jin assigned her to (that Soo-jin also happens to be working on). In her office, Soo-jin notices Joo-eun’s smaller face, and gives Joo-eun a new case. It’s a copyright infringement case, guaranteed to be difficult and boring, that she admits she’s too busy to handle.

Ji-woong gets a text from Joo-eun, thanking him for not complaining about his day living as Kang Joo-eun, and gives the guys their next mission. They must get comfortable, and do nothing. Ha, sounds easy, but it’s going to be torture for Young-ho!

Joon-sung shows up in time to participate (with a new, sexy haircut), and the guys take pictures of themselves lying around like slugs. Even Young-ho looks like he’s having fun with it. Later they’re told to watch a romantic movie and get emotional, and awww, Joon-sung even cries a little. He’s definitely the marshmallow of the trio.

Joo-eun forbids Young-ho to exercise, which seems to break his brain a little, hee. Then it’s naptime, which is definitely not a problem for Young-ho. He’s so squishy when he’s sleeping.

Woo-shik delivers information on Young-ho to Uncle, including a photo so that now he knows what his nemesis looks like. They discuss getting the CEO on their side, and how he’ll probably want stocks as incentive. They agree that it’s worth it to give up something in order to gain more.

Soo-jin visits the chaebol daughter who’s being accused of sexual harassment, and she seems like a real nasty piece of work (she’s naked in the bathtub getting a massage while talking to her lawyer — need I say more?). The woman is insulted that she got the firm’s deputy president instead of the president to handle her case, but Soo-jin informs her that no matter how much money she throws at lawyers, the press is going to eat her alive.

She advises the spoiled princess that, since her assault on her employees is public knowledge, she needs to lay low while she’s supposed to be under house arrest — no more plastic surgeons and massage parlors for a while. Princess spits that Soo-jin thinks she’s all that because she’s a little bit pretty, but as a lawyer, she needs her money to live. Soo-jin valiantly holds her tongue, unimpressed.

Joo-eun gets the hilarious pictures of her boys following orders to be lazy and unproductive, squealing at how cute they are. Her secretary, Hyun-jung, expresses worry over her weight loss and justifies that her own weight is mostly muscle, though Joo-eun just sighs that she has to get healthy for her thyroid.

She goes to Hyun-woo’s for a good solid meal on her day of freedom, but the restaurant is under construction and she’s left hungry. Hyun-woo does notice that Joo-eun’s face looks thinner, but shakes her head at the rest of her (oh come on, she didn’t lose thirty pounds in her face, people!).

Joo-eun tells Hyun-woo that she’s staying with a friend, which triggers the memory of Young-ho getting all close and asking if they’re the kind of friends who kiss. Hyun-woo mentions that her ex says he found out where John Kim lives, which makes Joo-eun sit up in alarm.

She calls Ji-woong and has him put her on speaker phone, ordering the guys to put down the bland food. Their day of living as Kang Joo-eun isn’t over, and they’re going out to eat. Expecting a fancy meal, they get dressed up in slick suits which is totally adorable, only to find themselves at a fast-food place, ha. Young-ho tries to bail (“I don’t eat carbs!”) but Ji-woong and Joon-sung force him to go inside.

Joo-eun in ecstatic over the food, while the boys eye it suspiciously. Finally Ji-woong digs in, and even Joon-sung picks at it, though Joo-eun tells him to just fight in a higher weight division. She tries to feed the stonefaced Young-ho something yummy, and he’s no match for the combined power of her cuteness and the boys’ muscle, though he threatens to make them pay for this tomorrow. But he does smile when Joo-eun wants to take a group selca.

Woo-shik gets a call from the police station, but on his way out, Soo-jin calls him to ask where he is. He says he’s at work, unaware that she’s watching him from her car and can see that he’s lying. He heads to the police station, where he finds out that Stalker is suing him for assault. Apparently Stalker spent three weeks in the hospital after Woo-shik punched him (as if) and even recorded Woo-shik’s threat to kill him if he goes near Joo-eun again.

When he’s asked if he has a lawyer, Soo-jin pipes up that she’s his attorney — she followed him to the station. She shoots Woo-shik a Look, and he knows he’s busted.

Soo-jin calls Joo-eun to the police station as well, to serve as witness. It’s not a funny scene, but I can’t help but laugh when Woo-shik and Joo-eun send Soo-jin identical glares when she tells the cops that they were each other’s first love. But she keeps it professional, explaining that after fifteen years, of course Woo-shik would be worried when someone is stalking Joo-eun. Young-ho shows up as well, since he was the witness for the first confrontation with Stalker.

After coming to a settlement, Woo-shik wants to talk to Soo-jin, but she says that he and Joo-eun should probably talk first. He shyly notes that Joo-eun looks good, and admits that he probably overreacted when he confronted Stalker — he didn’t know she had someone looking after her.

Joo-eun is angry that he pities her, but Woo-shik says that he didn’t totally stop caring just because they broke up. He wonders if she really knows who Young-ho is… maybe there’s more to him than she knows, and he might be playing with her. He says he’s worried that she may be falling for Young-ho, but Joo-eun counters that he’s being too nosy.

She turns serious and says that they aren’t kids anymore, but that she’s the same Kang Joo-eun she’s always been, and that gaining weight didn’t mean she destroyed herself. She tells him to think again about what she’s changed in the last fifteen years.

Declaring Soo-jin the better lawyer and Woo-shik in good hands, Joo-eun leaves. Young-ho gives his statement, and we see that he overheard Soo-jin’s explanation of Woo-shik and Joo-eun’s longterm relationship. He calls Manager Min to ask him a personal favor.

Woo-shik waits to speak to Young-ho, and officially introduces himself as an employee at Gahong, Young-ho’s family’s company. Young-ho says he hasn’t decided if he’ll be the new director yet, asking if Woo-shik is doing this because of Joo-eun. Woo-shik concedes that he has no right to worry about her, and thanks Young-ho for coming to help.

Young-ho says that he’d better go because Joo-eun doesn’t like being cold, which bothers Woo-shik. On the other hand, Young-ho looks pretty tickled that Joo-eun waited for him to drive her home rather than take a cab. So cute.

Soo-jin slumps once she gets home, remembering that same lunch where Joo-eun set her up with the engineering jerk, and how Woo-shik had brought her chocolates. After the jerk had told her that “people like her” should stay at home, Woo-shik had come back to punch the guy out for speaking to her that way. He’d dared the guy to sue him, saying that his friend Soo-jin here just passed the bar exam and could defend him. Aww, he really is a good person.

But in the present, Soo-jin had overheard Woo-shik’s recorded threat to Stalker, and how he’d warned him to stay away from Joo-eun. She spots her reflection in the window, seeing her old, overweight self huddled there.

Joo-eun makes Young-ho stop at a coffee shop, happily chirping that she still has thirty minutes before her day of freedom is over. Young-ho objects to caffeine so close to bedtime, but his face goes all soft to see how excited she is for a simple cup of coffee.

Manager Min agrees to Young-ho’s request, which involves himself and all the minions showing up at the police station in a show of force. Min talks to the cop handling Woo-shik’s charges, and makes sure that the word won’t get out that Young-ho was involved. He calls Young-ho to warn him to be more careful, and Young-ho retorts that Min should be more careful not to nag. I freaking love these two.

Whoops, Young-ho is illegally parked, and he narrowly escapes getting towed. It’s raining when Joo-eun comes running back to the car, and the sight of her pretty face in the soft rain makes Young-ho go all wibbly. He’s so flustered, he doesn’t even object when she hands him a fancy coffee for himself, but he recovers enough to ask if she had fun today doing everything he told her not to do.

She softly says that the coffee was just a gift, that she wanted him to experience a sweet part of life. She continues that humans have the right to pursue happiness, and Young-ho looks as though this is resonating with him. He asks if her gift symbolizes their right to be happy, and she says yes, just for this one day.

She suddenly seems to realize the atmosphere in the car has changed, and gets out for some fresh air. But the coffee shop has now closed, and she’s stuck in the rain, which makes Young-ho go all mushy again. Her wish for him to experience the good things in life echoes in his head as he watches her, and he gets out to say that this is too sweet.

He joins Joo-eun under her patio umbrella and casually drinks her coffee, but cringes that it’s too sweet. She catches him staring at her dimple and gets shy, but he doesn’t back down. She wonders when the car will be fixed, thinking that’s why the tow truck came, but Young-ho says the car is fine. He’s just hanging out here because he’s enjoying the sweet things in life. Okay, ~swoon~.

He can’t seem to get over Joo-eun’s dimple and reaches out to touch it, and she tells him to stop messing with her, remembering Woo-shik’s warning. Young-ho says thoughtfully that she really has no idea, that men do other things when they’re only messing with a woman.

Opening his umbrella to shield them from onlookers, Young-ho reminds Joo-eun that her body belongs to him, takes off her glasses, and gently kisses her.

COMMENTS

Well sir, when you finally figure out your feelings, you don’t waste any time, do you? Young-ho is just the best thing ever, with his fascinating mixture of insecurity and confidence, pairing confusion over his feelings with a willingness to get closer to Joo-eun to see what will happen. He seems so hard to read, and yet every thought is right there on his face once you know how to look. He obviously finds Joo-eun interesting as a person, and has for quite a while, but I love that it’s that adorable dimple that mesmerizes him to the point that he can’t keep his hands off her anymore. It’s a great way to take the focus off of Joo-eun’s physical body, yet still make his attraction to her very physical.

I just love Joo-eun and her boys. It’s so cute how she’s really becoming one of them, so much so that Joon-sung and Ji-woong are even willing to make deals with her even when they know it will annoy Young-ho. Their eagerness to participate in the “day of Kang Joo-eun” was the cutest thing ever, and I love how they all really got into it, even grumpypants Young-ho. It really shows that they like and respect Joo-eun, and that they’re up for her shenanigans (though honestly, if she really lost that much weight, she’d probably be thin as a rail already — she wasn’t THAT heavy to start with!).

I wish we could get a little clarification on what Woo-shik’s deal is, why he’s following Joo-eun and getting involved in her business. I think he’s given some clues, such as when he told Soo-jin that he could never get remarried if he ever got divorced, because he would feel too guilty. But I can’t tell if he still cares for Joo-eun or if he’s just feeling guilty for “abandoning” her after dating for so long, and I wish we were shown a bit more of how he feels. In any case, it’s strange how he keeps watching and following Joo-eun from behind the scenes, since she seems to be doing quite well all on her own. She doesn’t need his help, and has truly moved on, and he definitely knows it, even conceding to Young-ho on several different occasions. It’s like he knows she doesn’t need him anymore, but he’s still stuck in being the knight in shining armor and can’t seem to let go of fulfilling that role for her. Huh, maybe that’s why he’s having trouble letting go — because she was able to let go so easily.

But I was cheering for Joo-eun when she pointed out that they’re not the same people as when they first met, and that her gaining weight wasn’t, as he put it, “destroying herself.” Because she’s right — people grow and change, but they stay fundamentally the same on the inside no matter how they change on the outside. Someone can gain or lose weight, or decide to change their style or their career, gain scars or even choose to alter their bodies purposely through tattoos or surgery, but it doesn’t make them somehow less. Joo-eun’s weight gain never affected her negatively other than a small loss of confidence in some situations. She never lost her sense of self, her pride in her accomplishments, or her determination to be successful. If Woo-shik saw her body changes as a loss, then that’s all on him, and says a lot more about him as a person than about Joo-eun. Good for her for knowing that, and for having the courage to say so out loud.

all i can say is people...let's not have any bad thought about the line Young-Ho said "your body is mine and you can't say no" before he kissed Joo-Eun pass....
i mean it could be not nice to hear or see in other peoples point of view, but like i said in an EARLIER POST ...

IT'S DRAMALAND (WHERE MAGIC HAPPENDS)!
let us (us viewers) who loves korean drama shows enjoy it with a pure happy, wild and giggling thought.

truth be told i didn't find Young-Ho saying whole sentence that as offfensive or creepy... and i will repeat m,y earlier post too that "it could be his way of saying I LOVE/LIKE YOU to Joo-Eun since he cannot say yet the real words "I LOVE/LIKE YOU" in person yet"

It is well acted and written! I know your body is mine is suppose to be a passionate sexy way of says, I am really into you! He is much tooo gentle and kind to mean it in an abusive way but I have to admit, i felt a tad uncomfortable with the wording. This is a different culture and a more innocent way of thinking than you would find in the western countries! He certainly is not an abuser or rapist! He is a kind, thoughtful, innocent doctor, who is always there to protect and comfort her! He is what every woman is looking for!

1st of all SMA, (not that it is any secret) SMA has absolutely gorgeous eyes.

IMO, the most aesthetically pleasing of Asian eye-types on a female - having an almond shape, but w/ a dbl lid that disappears when the eye is open and then getting a bit of that upturn frown look when smiling (another would be Jeon Ji-hyun).

After a slow start, eps 3-4 were a good bit more fun, but then ep 5 started to drag until towards the end when we got more of the JE and YH interplay w/ YH using Anna Sue (don't see why JE would have to be jealous) to tease/torture? JE.

And that continues in this ep, along w/ more fun w/ the boys.

Thus far, that has been the best thing about this romcom, along w/ finding more about the back-stories on WS and SJ (and even a little on JS).

Glad to see that the 2nd leads are not the stereotypical "baddies" and that they have their good qualities to go along w/ their faults (not to mention their insecurities).

In particular, think WS does still care for JE (which of course, makes SJ feel like that insecure, overweight girl she was back then); after all, she was not only his 1st love, but they spent 15 yrs together (which is longer than many marriages).

But at the same time, think WS is drawn a little to JE not so much that he wants to get back w/ her (even if she is starting to look like her former Daegu Aphrodite), but b/c YH in the picture gets his competitiveness flowing (also, by sticking close, now that he knows who YH is, can use that to his advantage).

Can't help but think that a good part of the character of YH is based on Kim Jong-kook.

Total health and work-out freak; goes to the gym all the time and eats bland ("healthy") food and does not imbibe in the pleasure of life.

I'm all for trying to eat healthy and working out, but form time to time (OK - maybe a bit more than that), wouldn't hurt to indulge.

Not that the 2 were totally compatible as friends, but Hyori would complain that Kookie was no fun since he never would drink w/ her.

But in this case, JE is getting YH to discover the pleasures in life (letting loose once in a while) - including falling in love.

"Can’t help but think that a good part of the character of YH is based on Kim Jong-kook."

so i wasnt the only one !!

Also the cold father, good relationships with his dongsaengs, and the injury (KJM suffers from scoliosis and fractured disc, he admitted he is always in pain but working out helps and he has to put an insert in one shoe because one leg is shorter then the other)

every episode i keep thinking about "coach cookie" :)

Not to stir the pot or anything, but what's with this drama? Hackneyed script; SJS looks like a cadaver and his acting is wooden - not deadpan, like in Master's Sun; SMA...well, nevermind; zero chemistry. But worst, the script....the lines are so bad. I should shut up, because with this premise, what did I expect?

Totally agree with you. don't understand why people just keep saying this is a good show. no plot, no chemi between the leads, nothing is attractive at all. The lines are just sound stupid with no sense of humor and even no common sense. Well, if people just choose to wear sun glasses to all these defects just for seeing SJS and SMA 's pretty faces-----however, IMO, actually their face look dull and unattractive-----I have nothing to say.

i agree (except about SJS looking like a cadaver...lol). I do think he looks like he's tuned out when he's not speaking lines, though. I "want" to like this drama more than I do. I can overlook a lot for the sake of "it's a drama" but the writing is a mess.

The problem with political correctness is that it empowers words over context and actions. JE could have said no. She's shown over and over that she's strong and self actualized. And Young-No would have accepted that no because his character is a gentleman.

Now, I could understand all of the uproar if he had been overly possessive around WS and then if he'd grabbed her and forced the kiss. But that's not part of the character.

I REALLLLY like the fact that yongho liked her before she lost all of her weight and became amazing again, it really is nice to see that he liked her for her and not because she was hot first. I also like that when he was in the hosp you can really see that he missed her and was enjoying her company before even her face has slimmed down. its a real breath of fresh air tbh go go drama!! its not always about looks man!!

+ 1 here - YH really like JE's personality/character - she is cheerful - which he mentioned - and he knows that she is a strong-determined-practical lady with a great sense of fun which i must say is beginning to infect the 3 guys now.

Wow!...so many comments on the "It is my body, you cannot say no!" and how it felt disrespectful. Somehow when I saw the show, I did not see it as such given what I know about the characters.

YH is a kind and accomplished person but he has been rejected by his family which took a toll on his self-esteem. He is still trying to win his family's approval given that he hides his identity as world class trainer and is agreeable to meeting the date set by his family without any complains. He is astute enough to know that JE feels some attraction to him and he is honest enough to admit he is drawn to her. I also get the impression that he has rarely asked anything for himself...his hesitation and gratefulness to Secretary Min when asking for a guardian (for his treatment) or asking for a personal favor is a testament to it. I would venture to guess he probably feels he is not deserving. If you look at his relationship with his two buddies, it seems lopsided where he seems to be the decision maker and care taker for most part. He is touched and caught up in the moment when he realizes that JE was trying to gift him with a day where he could let go and just enjoy life. He acts on his attraction when JE implies that he is just teasing her and has no serious interest in her but is not sure how JE will react and what his boundaries are so he makes the comment (interestingly enough he mentions earlier in episode that he does not own her face just the body). It comes across awkward because he seems to be using it as an excuse for overcompensating/hiding his vulnerability and fear of rejection. He still takes his sweet time giving her the capability to say no if she chooses to.

Totally CAN'T get all the flack' with John Kim's "Your body is mine" comment. It's very 50 Shades I'll admit - a very alpha, dominant male and a female who is inherently passive. Much like a Dominant/Submissive dynamic in most relationships. Joo eun may act all assertive in the work place, but deep inside she likes a man who can make the first moves. And obviously, JK has a thing for control. Which i find totally sexy.

@Mrs Na.. word to wht u said.. I ws surprised seeing the uproar here for last scene..I do get the fact Tht diff ppl diff pov.. Bt still it ws Lil surprising to see such strong reactions..

Nywz for me the last scene ws killer..evn if translations can go here n there, the expressions, the tone, the feels of char say it all..N I found the words before kiss as young ho's direct yet indirect way of confessing his feelings n somewhere she also got it n hence she also gave in for the kiss.. feelings were mutual.. Bt yes I wnt be surprised if they go back to "oh wht Hw y" kiss happened type as it quite natural to react lik Tht too as the solid confirmation of their feelings towards each other is still on the way only to develop fully..Nywz as of now..I find pace of story is going fine n love story is being developed in totally amazing manner n not rushed/forced..

Can't wait for next week epis

I must say that i find the chubby cheeks make Joo Eun very SWEET looking! She looks softer and not all angles.

I find that her thinner face is very angular and lost it's sweetness look.

Maybe PD used a softer lens when shooting her scenes when she looked chubby to get the "sweet-looking" effect.

All are entitled to opinions...............enjoyed dnt over analyze cause we all know its all fantasy and over the top is a well know trait for k-dramas
Loved it and can go back to the real world now.
#its always great to Hear peoples opinions.....take it all in with an open mind even in real life people dont always interpret what we say as we intend for it to be understood (the mind is complex only the owner knows it well and so are different cultures ) ........some of you would make great critics ?

To be honest, when I first watched the episode I cringed and eek-ed when Young Ho said that her body was his and she couldn't say no, BUT after a few minutes, I was like, come on. The subs have never been reliable and I shouldn't be quick to judge. Besides, nothing he has done in the past has shown that he would do anything rape-y to Joo Eun.

I think we all need to take a step back and realize that a lot is lost in translation, indeed, even people who speak the language might have different interpretations of the same phrase! Also, cultural differences? I'm not saying that rape culture is commonplace in Korea (or more so than it is in the US), but it's also important to note that it is the norm for men to be more assertive and controlling in public/private life in Asia, compare to how it is in Western Europe, Scandinavia or the US.

Let's not judge an entire show on one line. In Asian culture, I consider Joo Eun very much a feminist!

Aside from that, amazing episode. I don't think I've been this hooked on a show in a long long time (the last time was probably MLFAS or Dream High) and I'm hoping things don't go south from here!

Thank you, LollyPip for the recap!

I support the thinking that Young Ho wasn't being rape-y in the slightest with his words.

I'm going for the fact he was saying it in a *protective* stance as opposed to a *possessive* one. Not going mine, mine, mine!! but sincerely showing her, he considers her under his care and as such, he is responsible for her body. That she has "no say" in the matter is much like, he will protect her and love her in spite of her low self esteem in thinking a man like him is 'messing with her'.

I dunno. I just think people are too sensitive to take offence. That wasn't exactly a bodice-ripping scene or anything raunchy. Just a tame kiss under the rain.

i think it was more in the context of "you know you can't refuse me and my swoonyness, you're into me too, your ody wants me too" :) sort off

Although i do hope she rebukes him and kicks his "backside" for that remark. First of all because she is a strong woman, also , he still has to be her coach and they live in the same house so some restraint is required for at least a few more episodes and..well he likes strong women..so kicking his behind may just infatuate him more :)

Girl/Woman power !!

I guess I'll send the suffragettes and feminists back a few hundred years when I second another commentator's view when I say, So Ji Sub can say those words to me any day all day!!

However, I never even knew his words could be offensive that way! I agree, she should show some spunk and bite back - he just might be even more blown away. Can't wait for next week!

Wonder if JE's slimming from the top down (getting back her Daegu Venus face) is in part due to not having to have SMA sit in a chair for hours to put on facial prosthetics prior to shooting?

The other part is that JE not gets her dimples back which seem to fascinate YH.

And again, YH and JE had agreed that JE's body was "his," not her face.

Sooooo... we're upset about what Young Ho says (which to me was flirty and downright sexy) just before he kisses Joo Eun while she was upright and able to defend and/or run... But he gets a pass for hovering over her while she's practically strapped in a message chair (that is making a suggestive motion) talking about being the kind of friends who kiss... I just wanna be clear...

Sarcasm aside, that scene made me way more uncomfortable than Young Ho saying what he said just before he kissed Joo Eun. And I liked that scene...

Hello people who criticized, lamented or are enraged with the words sjs spoke. You guys should rewatch! Seriously if not go catch a parental guidance show. This is a freaking kdrama. Why so uptight? Know that everyone has the rights to comment and whatsoever but the words he spoke was justifiable because of the character he portrait. And it is just a gesture that makes sense since if you follow from episode 1.

considering that she gave him coffee to have a taste of the sweet life, he already knew that her heart was thinking about his. they weren't having a nasty argument prior, and he just jumped her. he actually gave into her coffee deal and drank. plus they had bantered all the time up until this point. and he had rescued her over and over again. he rescued them at the police station. he has not had any stalker intentions towards her, even when he aligned her shoulder in the hotel room. thus, i don't see it as creepy line. he's never crossed 'creepy" and woo shik's warning was something she should have not taken heed to. look she lives with 3 guys. not one of them have made a move on her up to that point.

it has to part of the k culture that we don't get. one time my korean female friend said to me, 'oh i miss your face" in english. I was like "uuhh".. but after stepping back, she was just saying how she missed me, or how we haven't seen each other in a while. but her direct words sounded creepy. "was there something on my face?" " "you are female saying that to a female"? thus, all random thoughts i had in my north american mind. that's when korean/english translation & culture differences arose and i had to acknowledge it.

Actually really like SJB's character in this show, over his character in Master Sun. Recall Javabeans said they were similar and hoped he would try something different. They are similar, but Young Ho's emotions and they way he interacts with people feel more natural. Yes, he's a rich chaebol with a disturbed past, but he doesn't use his pain and emotion to lash out nor shut people off. In Master Sun, his past created such an exaggerated version of himself.

So fascinated by the controversy here about the "you can't say no" scene. I think it's an excellent example of how dramas walk a thin line between upholding and subverting patriarchal attitudes.

Young-Ho's final lines of dialogue do feel a little too close to rape culture for comfort. And yet, the show has also had some profoundly subversive moments as well. At first I was irritated about the random stalker, but I thought it made an excellent point with the officer's careless response. Victims of stalking all too often have little recourse in the criminal justice system, especially if they don't meet a certain standard of beauty. Also, I think the show illustrates that Woo Shik is out of line in this regard as well.

Furthermore, the fact that Joo Eun refuses to be ashamed of her weight gain is remarkable in an extremely image-conscious society. Not detracting from the ick factor of that final scene, just pointing out how the show plays to both sides. Thanks for the recap!

True that. But dramas are written and edited by humans and we all have mixed influences and ideas working through us.
I'm keen to see how the plot progresses, but that moment will sorely stick out in my mind as a flawed scene where the writers fell back on old 'alpha jerk male' dialogue, probably because it's still considered romantic by the majority of viewers. It'll also stick because I found it jarring - telling a woman she can't say no (even as a joke) didn't really suit the awesome feminist Young Ho had proved himself to be throughout.

I don't usually (never, actually) read the comments here. But today I read them all, since as soon as the "can't say no" phrase left Young Ho's lips, I knew there'd be a torrent of negative feedback.
Well it was a poor choice of words, I agree, but first of all, she didn't actually say no. I watched that scene over a dozen times and I'm pretty sure. :) If he was leaning over and she was cringing and saying no and he said that - I would be reaching inside the computer screen for his neck. However, SHE was closing her eyes and tilting her head up, so I think it's safe to say the kiss was welcome.

Second, the drama has painstakingly built his image from the first episode as a protector and a very decent human being. Even when she was unconscious at their first meeting, he apologetically said "it's an emergency" before he cut her clothes off. When she was grabbing him by the collar, he calmly took her by the lapels, and when she looked startled, he said "i'm not grabbing you, I'm just covering you up". When she fell in the hotel lobby, and Woo Shik started to go towards her, it was Young Ho who held his hand up and said "she said no". I think he is a guy who is very, very aware of boundaries. And he beat the shit out of the creepy stalker who didn't even touch her just because she looked scared. Several times during the 6 episodes he intentionally got very close to her to test her reaction, and clearly saw that she was not threatened or put off by his actions, just flustered.
I'm fully aware of the abuse that goes on against women in this world. And I've been teaching my little boy that "no means no" since he was tiny. Here, however, I think it's more important to focus on actions, not words. And his actions towards her speak volumes.

I think if you gonna comment on scene or situation that have ripey vibe, there should be a bruhaha when JE when willingly into a hotel room with a man(JH) she hardly knows in the previous episode.

The point is when JH said "you cant say no" is he the type of men who will force their will on women.
Let see next Monday whether JE kissed him back because she was afraid to say No or because she really wanted to kiss him too.

I guess the kissing came early because the attraction is there right from the start.
So he kissed her. Why not? Both are single. Remember he has been living in US for so long. Over there people kisses even on their first date.

HA HA HA HA HA -- People over "here" kiss HELLO on their first date!!! Maybe not a passionate kiss, but a 'peck' is perfectly acceptable and a sign that the date is off to a good start; a sign that there may be some 'chemistry.'

Kisses 'here' are not necessarily considered private or solely as sexual intimacy. Again, it depends upon the kiss.

i too first cringed a bit at that sentence, but i just chucked it up to tha fact that he's just joking and something got lost in translation.

People saying he made his move very fast..i think they had a rapport with eachoter right away.
In the plane afterwards she was embarresed but he was still sitting on the seat of her chair chatting to her and she just threw snarky comments back. From what i see from SK drama's people, even dating eachother, tend to keep distance and still go formal, but not these twe.

He has seen her at her very worst and also sees her with workout clothes, no make up and her glasses, yet never did i get the impression that he finds her repulsive, on the contrary.
When he was looking at her medical check up sheet, they looked so comfortable with eachother, right in eachothers arms, her jumping up and down to get the page and not once did one of them flinch at how "uncomfatable" they were with the proximity, not untill he saw the bad reports on the sheet and called her a whiley woman and got right into her face, and even then. She looks like she can read people rather well too. she had him figuered out quite fast.

If you look at the way even the boys treat him with reverence , while she always keeps nagging him and giving snarky remarks and vice versa, you can tell they just went from strangers to instant comfort zone. It can happen.

the video's she had to send him, you could tell he had fun watching her :) hearing her complaints. Hence when he said he missed her cheery voici, i totally believed it.

Dont think he's the type of man to "mess around" in life so this kiss is just telling him that she is NOT some plaything. He's clearly stating his intentions to her, in the honest blunt way he has always been towards her (confessing his background to her when everyone else in the world was kept in the dark? thats being comfortable and at ease with someone , i think he might be shocked at himself just how much he confided in her and let her into his life..and home)

Same with him telling wooshik she does not like being cold "that's almost like staking his claims, telling him in a subtle way they are probably going home together or spending more time together since she is waiting for him
Hence the derp face wooshik made :)

You're right. There has been a sexual awareness between them from the very first episode. Young Ho always seemed to look at her body from a clinical point of view - how unhealthy her habits were and how that effected her - but he looked at HER as a woman he was finding attractive despite himself.

ps. nothing was lost in translation unfortch. He said exactly those words "you can't say no". Sigh. Such a perfect perfect episode otherwise.

@lolypip Wow this comment will never get read, it's so late but here's a go.

Thank you for the recap! I just has to point out that Joo Eun was saying that that whole 'Joo Eun Day' was a gift for Young Ho - a taste of the sweet things in life.
And the other and more important that. That moment when Ji woong bounced on Young Ho's bed remarking on how Joo Eun really was the Daegu Venus what with those reappearing dimples - Young Ho said "but those were cute" meaning her puffed, predimpled cheeks. Ji woong puffed up his own cheek in response.

I thought that second was an important though easily missed moment. Cause it showed that he liked her just the way she was.

Thanks again for the recap! Until next week. =D

Same as most 'romantic' dramas... sappy.

Fat girl dated hot-guy for 15 years. Hot-guy is all-over rich-girl: kissing, hand-holding, etc. Yet fat-girl acts as though she has never had her hand held or been kissed. Fat-girl acts as though all the stuff rich-guy does is an entirely new experience. Just corny/sappy & unbelievable. Whatever.

LOVE Sung Hoon, he looks quite a bit thinner than in New Tales of Gisaeng, but still tall and cute. Fat-girl should drop rich-guy and go straight to Sung Hoon. 1) Rich-guy too rich, too much baggage. Hot-guy dumped her for rich-girl, don't go back. Go to Sung Hoon and live happily.

But we will have episodes and episodes of cat/mouse chasing with Rich-guy / Sung Hoon character. Guess that's OK with me as long as Sung Hoon gets lots of screen time, he is much prettier than actor playing Rich-guy.

This epi is definitely on my top list of fave episodes on all kdrama I've watched. :) I love everything here but my faves would be 1] YH poking JE's dimple.. 2] the car scene when JE handed the coffee to YH and said she just wanted him to experience a sweet taste of life. (talking about kang joo eun day) That was way tooooo SWEET! 3] YH joins JE under the umbrella to hang out and experience the sweet things in life.

Arrrgh. I love this show.

And who knows how the controversied line "you can't say no" really comes off in Korean? I have to remind myself everytime somebody in a Kdrama says "So you were here" and I'm going first" that in U.S. we say stuff that had to come off weird when translated back to other languages, like "You're here" or "You made it" when it's beyond obvious. There are a few more in both languages but I can't think of them right now.

Both of them are full on 30over years old adult, surely kisses must be consentual. Why so much discussion on this.
