Answer Me 1988: Episode 12

There are lots of secrets floating around in this episode, and to make things even more complicated, everyone with a secret gets found out by somebody else. It’s the price you pay for not locking your doors, right? The weight of keeping someone else’s secret is easy for some and heartbreakingly difficult for others, but as we discover in this episode, what you choose to do about it can define how you love someone.

EPISODE 12: “Loving someone”

On a night in February 1989, Deok-sun’s dad clumsily makes his way home, clearly drunk and carrying what looks like a whole set of encyclopedias. Oy, Daaaaaaad. He at least thinks to hide the bundle before going inside, which I don’t know is better or worse. He’s especially affectionate to No-eul, who just wants to go back to sleep and hates being woken up by Dad’s freezing cold hands on his face.

The girls are still awake in their room, and Bora suddenly offers to let Deok-sun borrow the cassette she’s been asking for. The sudden bout of niceness is odd, but then as soon as Deok-sun puts her headphones in, Bora grabs the phone and waits by it anxiously. That’s cute.

It’s a while before Sun-woo is done putting Jin-ju to bed and sneaking the phone into his room, and Bora is nodding off but she still answers on the first ring. Sun-woo asks to go see a movie tomorrow, and she notices that he’s sneaking in some banmal here and there. He figures it’s okay since they’re dating, but she takes issue with it and he goes back to being formal with her.

They enjoy the fact that it’s late and no one else is probably awake on their street, which takes us around the neighborhood to check in with everyone. Jung-hwan’s parents cuddle, Dong-ryong sleeps in the library, Taek plays baduk, and Hyung comes into Jung-hwan’s room to point out that it’s snowing. And then he insists on cuddling up in Jung-hwan’s bed, which is just adorable.

Sun-woo tells Bora to come outside, and she accidentally wakes No-eul on her way out. Sun-woo grabs her in a hug as soon as she comes out to the street, insisting that no one will see them. Two seconds later, No-eul shout-whispers looking for Bora noona, and they quickly throw themselves against the wall right underneath him to avoid being seen.

Bora says she’ll take care of him and starts to head back inside, but Sun-woo assures her that no one else is awake and grabs her in another hug. This time he kisses her too, which is exactly when another gate opens and Taek comes outside with a pack of cigarettes in his hand. LOL, they all just stand there completely frozen, and Taek slooooowly hides the smokes and turns back around without saying a word.

Bora tells Sun-woo to take care of Taek, so he goes right over and spends the night there. It’s awkward for a while, and Taek smiles when Sun-woo finally starts by buttering him up with, “My precious friend Taek…” Sun-woo says it’s a secret, and Taek asks if he’s not afraid of Bora noona.

Sun-woo says no, he finds her cute. Taek: “Crazy bastard.” Hahaha. Sun-woo: “You know how to say things like that? Who taught you how to swear?” Taek just laughs and says it’s a secret.

Later, Taek practices that very phrase over and over, as Deok-sun coaches him on how to make it sound believable while adding to his swearing repertoire. The other guys complain that she’s teaching him bad things, but Deok-sun says he loaned a sunbae more money, and they immediately join in with curses of their own.

Deok-sun makes him practice saying no, and when Taek and Deok-sun start laughing together just the two of them, Jung-hwan gets up to go. Dong-ryong pulls him back down and says he got a coupon for a free meal from one of his brothers, and they make plans to go together.

Taek says he’ll try to make it if his match ends early that day, and Deok-sun looks over at Jung-hwan expectantly: “And you?” Jung-hwan hesitates, but Dong-ryong nudges him and says that an employee there looks like Lee Mi-yeon. He says he’ll have to go then, which makes Deok-sun scowl.

Sun-woo insists on going to the market with Mom and Jin-ju so that she doesn’t have to carry heavy things, but she doesn’t seem too happy about him coming along. We see that it’s because she’s not comfortable bargaining as much as she usually does with Sun-woo there, and in the end she makes him go home so that she bargain another 50 won out of the bean sprout vendor.

Deok-sun’s mom sends her upstairs with a plate of acorn jelly and tells her to come right back so that she can make a second delivery to Sun-woo’s house, but Bora shocks them both by offering to go to Sun-woo’s. She takes the tray and scurries out of there, and they gape at her the whole time. Deok-sun wonders if Unni needs to get her head checked at the hospital.

Bora mutters that she’s gone crazy all the way down the street, but still stops to check her hair before getting to Sun-woo’s. Deok-sun stops to primp too, and joins Jung-hwan’s family at the dinner table. She’s adorable with Jung-hwan’s dad as usual, and as they toss jokes back and forth, Jung-hwan nearly pulls something trying not to laugh.

It’s like he’s trying to force himself not to think she’s cute, but it’s a losing battle and in the end he just turns his head so that they don’t see him laughing.

Sun-woo’s family looks like they’ve seen a ghost, but it’s just Bora standing there with food from her mom. Sun-woo grabs the chance to get her in his room to “ask her something,” and they set a new schedule for meeting up now that he’s heading back to school tomorrow. Bora says that No-eul is onto them, so they have to meet further away from home now.

He’s happy just as long as he gets to see her, and grabs her in a hug. Of course Mom chooses that moment to open the door, but they disengage fast enough for her to have missed the hug. Bora pushes Sun-woo so hard that he falls to the floor, and she tells him to get checked for anemia before fleeing.

Deok-sun heads out too, and I love the way Jung-hwan stands near the door flipping a light switch just to be around when she goes. She asks when he’s leaving for school tomorrow, and says she’ll see him then.

She asks Jung-bong about the letter from her friend Mi-ok, and Jung-bong blushes adorably and says he sent a reply in the mail.

Deok-sun is uncharacteristically early for school, and gets dressed in a skirt and tights despite the freezing cold. She waits outside the gate for a while, until Jung-hwan’s mom comes out and says that Jung-hwan left ages ago at the crack of dawn. We see that he didn’t go early to study though, because he’s just sleeping in an empty classroom.

Deok-sun’s friend Ja-hyun warns her about seeing a trench coat flasher outside the new restaurant where she’s planning to eat with the guys this week. Deok-sun says she’s the only one in their class who’s never seen the flasher, and Ja-hyun notes that she sounds a little disappointed, admitting that she broke down in tears after her encounter.

Deok-sun vows to study this year and get into college, and Ja-hyun wonders if it isn’t a little late for that.

The moms enjoy a quiet moment now that all the kids are back in school, though Jung-bong is still at home with nothing much to do, which makes his mother sigh. The other moms remind her that there was a time when she swore she’d be happy if he were just healthy, and that she needn’t be greedy about college too.

Sun-woo’s mom coughs (she did once the night before too), and they urge her to buy some medicine if she has a cold, though she brushes it off as nothing. They worry about her getting caught by Sun-woo while working her part-time job, but she’s confident she can keep it a secret. There sure are a lot of secrets today.

The others ask who’s watching Jin-ju, and Mom says she’s found Jin-ju a new friend to play with. Hee, it’s Taek’s dad, who’s sporting a new hairstyle and busy cutting out new paper dolls at Princess Jin-ju’s command.

Jung-bong stands outside waiting for the mailman, and his face falls when there’s no letter for him today. The rest of the kids are busy studying, with the exception of Dong-ryong who gets caught sleeping in class by Dad. Deok-sun looks bored out of her mind but powers through the long day, and Sun-woo rushes off to meet Bora, while Jung-hwan heads home to hang out with Hyung.

With no one left to watch his video with, Dong-ryong heads over to Taek’s alone and peers into the room over the wall like a creeper. Taek sees him and they smile at each other like a couple of fools.

Sun-woo runs to the pojangmacha to meet Bora and asks why she’s studying all day when she’s still on break. She tells him that she’s studying accounting so that she can take a job, because there aren’t a lot of options for her with her police record.

She tells him he’s lucky she’s not studying to get an accounting license, because then she really wouldn’t have time to date. She says they can only see each other on weekends because he has to study for college too, and Sun-woo pouts.

Dong-ryong brings over his latest X-rated rental to watch with Taek, and they pop it into the VCR just as Deok-sun busts into the room. They try to keep her at bay, but she just wrestles them both to the ground and presses play to see what naughty video they’re watching… only to discover that Dong-ryong got the wrong tape.

Bora asks if Sun-woo is mad, which he clearly is. She takes issue with him using banmal again, and he asks if they’re really dating, because it still feels like a one-sided love to him. He thinks she still treats him like a little brother, but when they get up to go home, he smiles when he notices that she wore a skirt just to impress him.

When Deok-sun mentions the trench coat flasher, Taek suggests going to a different restaurant with the gang, but Dong-ryong says they have to go there for the coupon. Deok-sun isn’t afraid anyway and wants to see the flasher, and Dong-ryong figures that there’s nothing Deok-sun is afraid of in this world, save for Bora.

Dong-ryong clams up when he hears mice, and Taek says that he and Dad set out mousetraps recently but are both too afraid to see what they caught. Deok-sun just puts her coat on and says she’ll go out and catch the mice, and then proceeds to chase the boys around the yard with the mousetrap. Ack.

Taek and Dong-ryong flee into the house, and Dong-ryong asks if he doesn’t want to rethink it: “You really like her?” Taek grins from ear to ear: “She’s cute.” Dong-ryong gives him a good shake: “Get it together, Dummy!”

Deok-sun’s dad stumbles home with mousetraps this time, and when he wakes No-eul up like usual, No-eul blows up at being woken up for the millionth time by Dad’s freezing hands.

At the crack of dawn, Bora heads to the library to study, and Dong-ryong’s dad is shocked when Deok-sun comes out just behind her. He thinks she’s finally got her head on straight now that she’s a senior in high school, but we know it’s because she wants to catch Jung-hwan before he sneaks off to school without her.

She gets to the bus stop and hides around the corner when she sees Jung-hwan arrive, and she waits till he’s on the bus to board. He’s shocked to see her, and neither of them has an answer for the other about why they’re going to school so early. Deok-sun just says she’s going to sleep, and Jung-hwan braces himself when she falls asleep on his shoulder.

Sun-woo worries that Mom is sniffling now, but she still denies that she has a cold. She brings Jin-ju over to Taek’s dad, who worries about her too.

The boys eat dinner in class, and Dong-ryong reports that Taek’s match is still going on for ten hours now. They worry about his condition, knowing that he stayed up the night before, and we see Taek look more worn than usual as his game wears on. In the end he loses, and it seems like he throws the game just to be done.

Jung-hwan notices that Sun-woo still has a stomachache since lunch, and tells him to go to the bathroom if it’s indigestion. Sun-woo eventually throws up and gets permission to go home early, and when they see that, Dong-ryong attempts to lie to his father about eating the same thing as Sun-woo. Dad just grabs a pin to prick his finger instead.

Sun-woo stops by the pharmacy to get medicine and some cold medicine for Mom. Meanwhile Mom takes Jin-ju over to see Taek’s dad, who gives her cold medicine that he bought earlier. He opens the bottle for her and they’re just really sweet together, but then we see Sun-woo standing outside the shop holding Mom’s medicine in his hand. He looks shocked and hurt, but just goes quietly to the steps and takes his medicine on his own.

Taek looks completely and utterly exhausted the whole way home, and gets reminded that he has another match at nine in the morning. Geez. That’s brutal.

Sun-woo waits outside until he sees Mom return home with Jin-ju, and then arrives acting like nothing is out of the ordinary.

Deok-sun runs up behind Taek when she sees him ahead of her on their street, and tells him that he must’ve had a hard day, and that he did a good job. It seems like exactly the thing he needed to hear (or maybe it’s just the person he needed to see), and he smiles and takes a decisive step forward.

She’s surprised when he holds onto her arm, and then he starts to lean in like he’s going to kiss her…. Omo. Omo.

But then he just rests his head on her shoulder and stays like that for a little while, and she stammers that he worked hard, and he smiles.

The next morning, Deok-sun waits outside the gate for Jung-hwan, and this time he comes out at a normal hour. So do Sun-woo and Dong-ryong, who note that it’s really rare for all of them to come out at the same time like this, and all they need is Taek to make a complete set.

On cue, Taek comes out to get his morning milk. He makes sure to give Deok-sun a separate greeting, which doesn’t go unnoticed by the boys. Dong-ryong reminds them all about their group dinner tonight, and they race off to school.

Sun-woo can’t concentrate on his studies because his thoughts keep drifting back to his mom and Taek’s dad looking so cozy together. Jung-hwan seems preoccupied with thoughts of his own, and they both try to force the thoughts out by washing their faces.

Jung-bong prays to the God of Mail before checking the mailbox today, and he’s disappointed when there’s still no reply. Jung-hwan’s mom asks Sun-woo’s mom if work is still manageable for her and she still hasn’t been caught, and she says it’d be over if Sun-woo found out. Mom says he’s rather scary when he gets mad, and Jung-hwan’s mom says it’s just because he cares.

Sun-woo is so preoccupied that he bails on his friends and skips night classes altogether, and they wonder what’s gotten into him. Deok-sun is already waiting at the restaurant, and Taek arrives soon after. Taek’s just as shocked to hear that Sun-woo skipped class out of the blue.

The food arrives and Deok-sun can’t handle watching Taek struggle to cut his meat, so she just ends up doing it for him, which Jung-hwan notes quietly. She gets up to go to the bathroom to empty her stomach, and Taek gets up too.

She’s almost to the bathroom when suddenly the trench coat flasher shows up and eagerly drops his pants right in front of her. Taek is a few feet behind her and they’re both frozen in shock, but Deok-sun gathers her wits and says, “It’s so small! There’s nothing to see! Go home, ajusshi!”

She succeeds in shaming him enough that he scampers off, and Taek is totally impressed. But the second he’s gone, her knees buckle and the shock wears off, and Deok-sun bursts into tears. Aw.

Sun-woo skipped class to stalk his mom, which sounds weirder than what he’s doing, which is standing outside Taek’s house looking like a sad puppy. He listens to his mom and Taek’s dad talk and laugh and play with Jin-ju, sounding very much like a little family.

Jung-hwan and Dong-ryong wonder what’s taking the others so long, and Dong-ryong giggles as he suggests that maybe Taek is making his big move. Not what Jung-hwan wants to hear right now.

Taek sits by Deok-sun’s side in the stairwell while she cries, and he scoots closer to ask if she’s all done crying. She tells him not to tell the others because she’s embarrassed, though he doesn’t think there’s anything embarrassing about crying.

Sun-woo is still outside the gate when Mom heads out for work, which is another shocker to add to his plate. Taek’s dad reminds her to wear gloves, and he worries about Sun-woo finding out, but Mom says he’s busy studying and she has to work if she wants to buy him new shoes and clothes when he goes to college.

Sun-woo has to bite his lip to keep from bursting into tears, and hides out of sight as Mom heads off to work. He follows her to the bathhouse and lingers outside.

Deok-sun and Taek return to the table, and she stuffs her face happily. Dong-ryong tells her to slow down because no one’s going to steal her food, but she says it’s just habit. Her eyes get even bigger when dessert arrives, and she sticks the little umbrella in her hair.

Taek just finds everything she does cute, and Jung-hwan looks downcast when Taek reaches over and takes the umbrella out of her hair. Jung-hwan leaves the table, saying that he has to call Hyung about recording something on TV.

Deok-sun needs to go to the bathroom but is clearly holding it because she’s scared. She ends up going, though she’s frightened the whole way there, and eventually she senses someone following behind her.

She reaches the end of the hallway and braces herself, but it’s just Taek. He says he came out for a smoke, but tells her to go because he’ll wait right here until she’s done. Aw.

Sun-woo finally decides to go inside the bathhouse to confront Mom, but when he goes in, he breaks down at the sight of her hunched over and scrubbing tiles. He’s overcome with emotion and tamps down his anger and his tears, and in the end he turns around goes back out, asking the owner not to say anything about him stopping by.

Taek’s dad discovers Sun-woo out in the street, and starts to tell him that his mom just stepped out for a moment. But Sun-woo balls up his hand in a fist and says he knows about Mom’s part-time job, and will act like he doesn’t know.

He meets Bora and asks her why Mom insists on working when he doesn’t want her to suffer, when he doesn’t need or want nice clothes or shoes. He wonders why things can’t stay the same, and why on earth Taek’s dad knows things about his mom that even he doesn’t know.

Bora just listens and lets him blow off all his steam, and then just says one thing: “That’s enough. Go massage your mom’s shoulders. Go home and massage your mom’s shoulders.” She pats him on the back as he tries not to cry.

It’s not until Sun-woo walks home by himself that the tears really spill out, as he thinks back to what Bora said. She knows that he hates it that Mom is working, but she says that his mother hates not being able to buy him new shoes. She tells him to think of it from Mom’s perspective too, because it’s not always about him getting to be guilt-free because that makes him feel good.

Bora: “Loving someone isn’t just the room to give. It’s a desperate need to give because you have to.”

Sun-woo wipes his tears and heads inside with a bright voice and tells Mom he’s hungry. She runs out to greet him and they happily eat pastries as they talk about their day. As Sun-woo looks over at Mom, Bora’s words continue: “You love your mom, right? Loving someone is a really difficult thing.”

Deok-sun’s dad comes home tipsy like always, but this time he stops and warms his hands under the blanket and checks that they’re warm enough before touching No-eul’s face.

Deok-sun and Dong-ryong return to their neighborhood after their dinner, and Deok-sun asks why Jung-hwan just left early without a word. Dong-ryong figures he had to run home to watch the fight on TV with Hyung. But we see that Jung-hwan is asleep on the couch while Hyung is watching the fight. Aw, did you just not want to be around Taek and Deok-sun?

Bora’s voiceover continues: “Loving someone is also never being able to hate a person, even if they endlessly cause you pain, making you endlessly want to hate them, but you can’t.”

Jung-hwan’s mom sends him over to Taek’s house to bring him soup, and Jung-hwan finds him passed out in front of his baduk board. He sighs and sets out the blankets and tucks Taek into bed all warm and snug, and Bora’s voiceover says, “Loving someone isn’t not hating them. It’s not being able to hate them.”

Jung-bong checks the mail and finally receives the letter he’s been waiting for, and kisses it happily. He shows it off to Deok-sun, who’s surprised to hear that it’s from her friend Mi-ok, who’s currently laid up in the hospital after a car accident. She says Mi-ok can’t even lift a finger right now, and Jung-bong tears open the letter to find that it’s anonymous chain mail. Wah waaaaah.

COMMENTS

This episode is another example of what I love about this season, because you start out thinking that the focus will be entirely on romantic love, only to find out that it’s really about a son’s love for his mother, and a friend’s love for his friend. Sometimes Sun-woo seems too nice to be real, but there was a nice balance today between his childish idea of protecting Mom and Bora’s more mature consideration of Mom’s feelings. I like Bora more and more with each passing episode, especially as she shows a softer side that actually cares about impressing Sun-woo with all the little things. But she’s especially great at cutting through the crap and getting the younger kids to see beyond their selfish scope, like she did with Dong-ryong, and again this time with Sun-woo.

It’s inevitable that at eighteen, the younger kids will only think about how their parents’ behavior affects them, or makes them feel. Sun-woo’s concern for Mom comes from SUCH a good place, but Bora is right about him just wanting her to stay at home so that he feels better about it, when really he’s not old enough to support his mother or change their situation in a practical way. It’s undue pressure for a kid to even have to worry about this stuff, but we’ve seen how much Mom tries to hide her financial troubles from him for that very reason. If doing manual labor affords her the peace of mind to buy a few extra things for her children, it’s right that he should keep her secret and not let on that he knows about the job. It’s so sweet that it breaks his heart that much to see his mother scrubbing the floor, but I was far more impressed with his maturity in accepting her decision and just doing his best to be loving and supportive. I don’t think it’ll be quite so easy when it comes to Mom possibly remarrying, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.

I’m really worried about the pressure that Taek is under (and whatever that goddamned medicine is that Dad mentioned picking up at the pharmacy for him). He looked especially worn out during his match, and if he’s constantly staying up nights in order to keep up with expectations, that’s gotta catch up to you at a certain point. It’s not that I think he’s fragile; he’s overworked and under public scrutiny, and people in the show keep talking about how baduk is as much a physical game of stamina as it is a mind game. I do like that he’s expressing his feelings more—he’s seeking comfort from Deok-sun and leaning on her when he needs it, or calling Sun-woo a crazy bastard for liking Bora noona, or just taking the time to hang out with his friends. I especially enjoyed seeing him take care of Deok-sun for a change when he stepped up to be her bathroom watchdog, because it’s so often the other way around with them.

In many ways, Jung-hwan’s approach is frustrating when it comes to Deok-sun, because she’s starting to show signs that she wants to be around him and now he’s trying to maintain a certain distance. But then he goes and takes care of Taek no matter how much he’s jealous or even resentful, and then I get all sympathetic towards him trying to keep everything the way it was. Maybe he thinks that no one else will get hurt if he ends his crush quietly, or maybe he thinks that Deok-sun would never choose him. It’s hard to say because they’re all one-sided crushes, even though I think he might be blind if he doesn’t see that Deok-sun likes him back. But the point is that he doesn’t think of Taek as a rival; he loves Taek as much as he loves Deok-sun, which is the problem. It’s not at all surprising that Jung-hwan is hanging back, when he did the same with Sun-woo (pre-Bora). He’s cautious and observant and so scared of being caught in his crush that he wouldn’t even call Deok-sun pretty around the other guys, so it totally fits that he’d act like this. I love him for loving Taek, but at some point he has to act on his feelings or risk forever being the guy who loves her from the sidelines.

i dont get why people keep said that DS like JH because of her friends. I think it's more than that, with SW she never hesitates or think and just act cute to SW as soon as her friends tell her. But with JH, she's deny it very very hard even after she received the gloves gift from JH. and even thought that it would be uncomfortable for them if JH does like her. And if she doesnt like JH then she definetely would tell her friends No i/o I dont know when her friends ask did she like JH or not. it's show that DS is already know but not sure that JH would like her and kinda scared. if she doesnt like JH i think with DS character she would just storm out and ask whether she should go to the blind date same as when she told SW to confess in first snow. butttt she really nervous and back down on the 1st try before she finally told JH that she going to blind date. Yes after that day she act different with JH but not the same way she with SW. she still eat cake clumsly, bickering with each other on the night before taek said he likes DS. she just act more soft and show more her femine side to JS but the silly, clumsy DS is still there (the joke between her and JH's dad, brush off JH with 'you dont need to know' but in a soft tune, eat steak and parfait like there's no tomorrow) so, i think it's totally diff with SW. and yeah we really need the writer to show DS's feel, so far we only see it from JH and Taek. and for JH i think that he likes DS far from that alley accident. because he really denies that DS is cute when all.of his friends said DS is cute. and that proud smile when DS show up in TV as picket girl. he just doesnt know it until that alley scene.

THIS!

I feel like I have been watching another drama or something whenever I saw people here asking why JH likes DS or vice versa OR DS likes JH only because her friends told her that he likes her.

(Sigh)

Of course, everyone can have different perspectives and preferences, and I respect everyone, but sometimes I found it interesting that even the most core, crystal clear stuffs cannot be taken as it is and need to be explained with a flood of words.

I don't get it either. She liked JH without know what is was before the trip to McDonald's. Her behavior so also totally different than with SW. She was very spontaneous as normal with SW, but with JH she weighed her actions and words. You can hear from her voice over when she got the gloves that she liked him, but wouldn't dare admit it. Her and JH also have a totally different pre-romance friendship than SW. They were more "rivals" who fought type of friendship than cute and friendly like SW/DS. Of course, she's not going to give in first if could help it.

I do think JH probably likes her more and her feelings are a title less deep, but she does not like him just because her friends said so. It's really annoying to read how people think she likes people who like her and that's as deep as it goes. It's totally untrue.

It's annoying to see her downplayed so much. Her crush and the process is clear in the drama.

I wish the writer would just reveal the husband as soon as possible. This is just calling for another fanwar. Fans are always pitting Taek and Junghwan in every comment and even articles that's not about them. I came here and other articles to read about the heartwarming family stories, but reading the comments putting down another character that's not their bias just left a bad taste in my mouth. Why can't we just enjoy the process instead of focusing too much on the outcome that we're not even sure about?

I know. I don't mind them doing it a bit in the beginning, but if they continue to manipulate at this stage in the game then it's going to start affecting the progression of all the characters like it did in 94'. I love the family and friends of this drama and, more than ever, I'm ready to accept where ever the romance takes me as long as I'm enjoying all the characters along the way.

Unfortunately, it's just so much easier to enjoy the process in the beginning, but as soon as you become invested it becomes much harder not to start wishing for a particular outcome to occur. This is why, even if they play around a bit more with who it is, I hope doing so doesn't keep the progression from feeling organic or the conclusion from feeling 'right'.

Part of the reason I want them to get there soon is because I want to be able to see how all the characters are doing in the future at some point. But if they keep this up, they won't be able to introduce "Taek" or "Jung-hwan" in the future portion until the very end, which would kind of be a bummer. I'd like the drama to give enough time to really see how all the characters lives have unfolded over the years.

Exactly. I'm really curious about their character development since DS and BR present characters is quite different from their past selves from what we've seen so far. I don't mind if they're playing around a bit, just don't turn anyone into sacrifice only to keep trolling us -_-

If fans start arguing over DS like she's a piece of meat the writer should let her marry DR.

Silent smile, silent love, silent protection that you give to the girl... will not give you anything... THAN HURT. Babo!!
Everytime you and that girl together... so close... i just have one thought... KISS HER! Babo..babo...babo.
Just kiss her and let's nature decide for you. Maybe you will get beat up from the girl... or get beat up from her father (coz maybe the girl kiss you back and that will lead to... ' the scene that DR and Taekie want to watch but they got wrong tape' and made you should take responsibilitie for your action)
*Sigh* Even thought that will imposible to happen because i know you are a gentleman. (just my dream)
JUNG HWANNAAA... MY HEART START TO MOVE TO TAEKIE BECAUSE I SEE HIM MORE MATURE THAN YOU IN RELATIONSHIP! He no coward! Not like you! SO STEP UP YOUR GAME OR I WILL ERASE YOU FROM MY HEART!!

wow. lots of feels.

but you know, it is really hard to be in this kind of situation. you have so many things at risk. people would often say "follow your heart", etc BUT stepping back and observing/assessing things thoroughly may lead to better a outcome. i think JH is still so confused right now, i'd allow him that thinking time.

be patient.

i guess we as people from outside find it esier but if i would be in Junghwan's shoes(and age) and as his character till now i would also be having loads of troubles on what to actually do,even if a like the other person so much i would still weight it when it involves one of my best friend and more than sure in his eyes the potential of their friendship never going to be the same if he takes that step and dates DS,so i see him wanting to let his crush die quietly and not ruin a groups friendship...From outside things aren't as complicated as the people from inside, their worries and stuff are multipled, even the smallest of things seem big and without solution...And knowing Junghwan he does value a lot his friendship,he also did it when he believed Sunwoo likes DS,he choose to stay aside and not meddle even if it hurt him a lot and be the one to give up...
I guess in the future it explains what DS said to future Husband history of dating, that looong list...More than sure College came and he wanted to divert his feelings and make them go pretending it weren't there trying to forget DS as not to ruin his relationship/hurt Taek...

Hmm.. I don't know guys. I know a lot are going crazy about the pairing. Because hey everyone roots for the tsundere and the bubbly girl. But the whole DS and JH loveline is kinda bland to me. It doesn't make me feel things like I wish it would. If they were to get together I would congratulate them but unfortunately I wouldn't feel so touched. Sure I feel bad for JH. About his inner conflict. And sure Deoksun is adorable with her approach. I like them individually. But I don't know if I should feel something about them together? Because honestly I don't have this strong urge to root for them to be together at all. My heart must be made out of stone. LOL. The only couple I'm really liking is Taek's dad and Sunwoo's mum. Or well at least I hope they'll be a couple at the end. Now this is a couple I root for because they made me feel something and them being together would be so meaningful. For them and for the people around them aka their family. I guess I'm only here for the family aspect of the drama. I couldn't care less about the main otp or who the main otp might be. LOL

All I know about DS and JH is that it started with physical attraction on JH's part and the knowledge, appreciation and craving of being liked on DS's part. I mean that's fine. No big deal. Some relationships do start without much deep significance but where is the depth and development of the relationship which enables me as a viewer to care? I don't see it. I care for JH as character which is why I feel bad for him and want him to stop torturing himself. I care for DS as a character because I understand her youth and craving for romance and any kind of attention she could get. But their loveline is simply something I don't care for sadly. I wish I did though.

That's how I feel about it.No matter how people try to sugercoat the current situation, but this is truly how it's shown.JH-DS has nothing absolutely nothing in common, and it's just mere physical attraction,it seemed to me.I mean apart from the chemistry there's nothing there, which makes you feel for someone.

They are kids and growing up and falling in love. I don't think either one are in so deep they can't get over it, even Junghwan. This is a relationship that's going to span the whole show and take on deeper meaning later (after the time skip). SW's Mom and TK's dad are an adult relationship with real consequences (and lots of benefits for the two and their family) so it's easy to see why they belong together.

It's a little unfair to compare them to DS/JH really. And this drama is not focused on romance, so you really can just not care that much about the couples at all. If you just want to see the two happy then that's fine. Who says you have to be deeply moved? You really don't.

I don't think I mentioned anything about Deoksun and Taek. But if you must know what I feel about them then I guess you could say that I care about the bond they have. I guess you could say that I simply care for the OT5 friendship bond. To me that this special friendship they have with each other is so much more meaningful, precious and deeper than the underdeveloped loveline they are trying to push. Like I said, I don't care whoever Deoksun ends up with. If she ends up with Junghwan, good. If she ends up with Taek, great. If she ends up with Dongryong, awesome. If she ends up with someone outside of the circle, daebak. It just doesn't matter and is of no importance to me. What is most important to me is the friendship and family storyline which makes this drama so lovable in the first place. The loveline is just side dish for those who liked it to eat and those who don't to ignore.

I care more about the 5 staying friends than dating too, so you aren't alone. It's really okay not to care that much about their dating life. In reality I don't think DS/JH would ever work because he's just not doing enough and she's not assertive. They'd be that crush you had that never worked out. And they'd get over it and remain friends.

I'm Deok-Taek shipper as well. But I will feel bad for Jung Hwan if he is not the husband either. It's so difficult to choose either 1 of them.

Writer-nim style is never reveal who is the husband until the last few episodes or even till the last episode. I can still remember 1997 last episode when she made the brothers ran to the hospital and appeared together.. I was still confused then.. now looks like she is doing the same for 1988... But my woman's instinct said that it's Jung Hwan who is the husband. Gosh, i'm going to feel sad for Taek if that is the case.

I just want to add something to my previous post. The preview for the next episode shows that Taek has run away from home. I think we should be able to see if Deok Sun really took care of Taek as a dongsaeng or she really likes him. That could give us a better picture of who is likely going to be her husband.

when sunwoo cried it hurt my heart so much. i know he's going to struggle with her mother moving on but i hope hes able to be understanding. thankfully he has bora by his side who seems just like the person he needs.

and i really thought taek was going to kiss her i was so gutted!! i hope he confesses soon. and when deoksun dad came in and this time warmed his hands before touching his sons face that honestly brought tears to my eyes. this show has so many stunning moments that leave me touched long after the show has ended.

and i just want to give my opinion about how junghwan end up liking duksun.
the alley scene it's not solely the reason, i think it's just the start at how junghwan sees deoksun differently. he's probably just see her as one of the boys before, when they together with the rest of the gang, they always end up bickering. that moment (before the boner), when deoksun rest her head on junghwan chest, that's the time when it's only both of them together, he probably start wondering, why he's nervous, why it feels strange... and after that day, he's starting to be curious and paying more attention to her than usual. junghwan end up liking her for real, what seal the deal was that moment when he got a cramp. it's not because of the cramp, it's because simply, he realize that little things she does makes him happy/smile. and then it grew deeper by the day.
the thing is, it's not easy to explain how a person/ two people falling in love, what's really the reason/cause.
i'm not really good at explaining, there are so much that I want to write but it's limited cause I'm not really good at english :/
and it's not because of the boner, that's probably an embarrassing and awkward moment for both of them, lol.

Yes. I think he always did deep down like her and the the alley scene was a catalyst, not the reason. A guy does not act like he does over a boner if there is nothing else there. Seriously. If he didn't like her for real she'd just go back to annoying him again once they were out of there, but she didn't. He started to feel more deeply for her.

Right now only DS and Taek know secret side of each other. In this ep, before DR told Taek that there’s nothing Deok-sun is afraid of in this world (beside BR lol) and then Taek know now it's not true and DS is still a girl who can be frightened. It just likes she can be brave when being scared (*borrow other drama's phrase*).
They have change to see each other differently.

Taek's dad's interaction with Jinju is gold! So lovely.

I also think in a way, it's probably really healing for him. When Taek's mother died, he must have been about Jinju's age. We know Taek's dad was devastated, and the flashback showed us how Taek would just cower in silence on his own. They were both traumatised. That sort of grief is drawn out over years, especially when both the grievers are the silent, suffering types. So I imagine, when Taek was that age, his dad and he didn't have that kind of joyful, silly fun very much - they probably were very quiet at home, and Taek grew up.

So Jinju, with all her mother's love and Sun Woo's love as replacement for a dad - doesn't feel the loss as keenly and her bubbly fun joy must be wonderful for Taek's Dad to experience.

I watched reply 1997 and skipped reply 1994 (even though 1994 was the year i turned 18 y.o.). And was apprehensive about reply 1988 during the casting rounds, mostly coz of hyeri and also thinking that maybe the reply series might be getting tiresome in its third round.
But the third reply series is shaping up to be my favourite now.
I don't care for the husband guessing game. What i really care about are ALL the relationships that everybody has with each other. It is so heartwarming and full of love. Love everybody in that neighbourhood.

P.s. i've been voting 5 stars for all the reply 1988 episodes. Love the rating system too. Soo easy and soo satisfying.

Junghwan is super frustrating (not as bad as last episode though) to watch and Taek is being really cute and growing up. I think Junghwan might make a move if DS would confess, but her friends of course told her not to do that. He's obviously jealous of Taek and DS spending time together. He's not really totally giving up right now either. I think she's going to have have to be the one to move it forward of it's just never going to move. Unless some outside force makes me move. I can't really blame any of three since they are kids, but at the same time if any of them said what they felt aloud the triangle could be resolved.

Sun Woo is much more interesting now than when he was the perfect son. I'm sure for him it's going to be hard to see his mother dating as well since it's only been a couple years since his father died.

I for one think JungHwan would do the Noble Idiot Route as much as possible if DS confess and refuse her for some lame reason as not to hurt Taek,i see him more confessing or stepping up if some other force comes in and makes him do it,even if it's in the impulse of the moment, like if some other dude makes his move besides Taek,or if she is hurt or something...as it is JH now he sure prefers to stay aside rather than think he might destroy the relationship with Taek if he get's with DS...

I have a feeling that DS and JH will end up together and Taekie will become another Chillbong (huhuhu). I hope that the writers will give more meaty scenes to DS, Taekie and JH. It is kinda disappointing to see so many scenes involving SW and Bora when they are not even the main actors. This episode is sooo good, and the word secret and cute is all over it and for almost every person involved...Bora and Sunwoo secret romance while hiding it is so funny and well being caught, thinking no one will know in such a small united comunity, like half of them already know jajja...Jungbong BGM when waiting for his fateful love letter reply is adorable and funny at the same time...Deok Sun-ah crush on Jung Hwan is so visible, she isin't really sharp hiting it at leats for me,even more with her sudden change when she's acting with him,i'm quite curious if JungHwan noticed it as he is very observant, most of the time that is...Also him avoiding her from some time now,he sure is going his Noble Idiot path and trying to add an wall...I always wonder why the gang always thing Taek is such an innocent lamb when he clearly isin't,yeah he has problems with the mundane things or he's the quiet type,i take it as many more factors involved more as he grown outside school without being social to others, being the quiet/shy type and spending all his intrest in baduk but they really think he's that innocent, terating him sometimes even without intent as a dumb kid...I find him also quite manly and in some ways more mature than all of them for sure...I found JungHwan being the outside man in the DeokSun-Taek trio so sad, those sad puppy eyes are heartbreaking,as we clearly know he likes her a lot yet again i also know Taek likes her the same, for sure he liked her from their childhood years...Sunwoo and Mom story was so so real,it shows that he is still a kid and not yet a man yet he is a great son,i would love to have one as him,Bora really is great match for him...I might be the minority that don't think Taek is sick,as final dying and stuff..his headache and stress comes with his baduk and infernal scheldule nothing more,it would be more strange if he was perfectly fine if he was doing all nighters and be all peachie...when he will retire/if he does/ of his baduk life he'll be fine and his immune system as well...I'm quite curious how SunWoo will handle the future Mom-Taek Dad relationship(we have it coming)as i sense he will be oposing it for a while before giving in and embracing Taek as little bro...It's adorable as in the end the moms will beocme ONE BIG Family with the help of the children, imagine the future gatherings

I think we all need to give DS and JH a break. I mean, when I think back to my high school crushes, there was no way any of them had any "serious" substance. We don't all live in Kdramas here where life-changing events bring about love.

If you find that a good guy friend who's pretty attractive is into you, then chances are you will start developing feelings as well. I mean, heck, even now, a lot of my guy interests are based on physical attraction and then AS WE GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER the love blossoms, ya know what I mean?

I think JH and DS having known each other for eternity is itself enough substance for them developing feelings. And, when they start dating, there love can develop even more substance.

On another note, I love Sun Woo and Bora and Go Kyung Pyo is slowly stealing my heart.

No, scratch that. Every character in this show is stealing my heart.

People wanted for the show to focus on family and friend elements, esp after the husband love triangle push and pull of the 94 series drove people nuts. Family and friends are what made the answer me series so great. That's what the writer is doing now. Now that this series' focus and screen time is dedicated more to these storylines, unfortunately there will not be as much OTP scenes in the same dosage as 97 or 94.. Because all families are sharing screen time in equal measure. It's not going to be all about shi won x yoon jae or najung x trash x chilbong.

Of course the romantics in us want more jung hwan and duk son interactions.. I'm thinking the writer is not going to "develop" their relationship until the third leg.

So, I predict that JH is the husband, simply because the adult actor plays the role way more like JH than Taek... However, right now a part of me really hopes I am wrong. Taek is just so open and honest. It kills me to see JH struggling, but I am equally worried for when Taek finds out how JH feels. I watched the raw yesterday and the whole time I was hoping Taek would kiss DS or hold her... And then that final scene where JH tucks Taek in just killed me... I don't see how this can possibly end with my heart not being broken, no matter who DS ends up with.
But my Christmas wish list (staying with my gut feeling that JH is the husband), Taek and DS date for awhile, and they realize that their relationship is more defined by her care taking role than equal love and then she marries JH... But at this point, we have seen so much more earnestness and maturity from Taek, that I really need more background of why JH lurves DS so much or a big step forward from JH to feel happy about that switch.

I wonder if the end game( or the theme of the drama) is friends( and their friends) will evolve into a big family. Taek's dad and SW's mom get married and then SW and Bora will get married, then JH & DS then maybe DR & Jinjyu(SW's little sister). Then all of them would somewhat become legally related and they would become a big family. Is it the direction, the writernin?

Jin Jyu and DR ( their friend with glasses) is a hard one due to the age gap but only female figures in the circle of friends are Bora, DS and Jinjyu,,, that is the only reason, nothing else.
Oh well, there is a DS's friend who can potentially end up with DR but she would not complete the circle of friends into a circle of relatives. At one point of this drama, I started wondering if this were the writer's intention but I thought that this concept( friends will become relatives) was a bit stretch. HOwever, judged by how it has been progressed so far , this is not that far fetched.
Also people do not like the idea that Jin Jyu will end up with one of the boys but what if DR(is it really his initial) get away from home as soon as they graduate from high school then spend many years outside of the town while Jin Jyu grow up to be a lovely girl in the neighborhood, then one day they meet and fall in love despite of the age gap,,, that is actually a possibility.
I do not think that the writer really wants to convert the friends to relatives one by one, to be honest. Let's see how the drama evolves.

Don't worry about the smoking habit of the 2015 husband. It's so obvious we would deduct : Taek is smoking & husband is smoking =>Taek is the husband, that it can only be a red herring. In my opinion, that's the most definitive clue that Taek is NOT the husband. Maybe it won't be JH either, but I bet it won't be Taek.
Or maybe the writer is playing with us, and knowing that we'd see the smoking habit as a red herring and disregard Taek as the hubby, it's in fact Taek ?.
At the end, I don't care, I enjoy so much the ride.

1988 was almost 30 years ago. Lots of time to pick up a bad habit.

This episode is awesome.

Reply 1988 is shaping up to be my favourite. I don't care for the husband guessing game. It is so obvious by the way (i won't name names).

The awesomeness comes from the relationships in that neighbourhood and life's struggles that they go through. They are so heartwarming and loving. None of them is perfect but all of them are awesome, even the tiniest one, Jin Ju.

Thanks for the recap~
Taek in cap reminds me of Min & wonder how different his life would be if he grow up with Hyung instead of Samchon. Yes, I get carried away with fictional character, I know that.

SW & mom arch is what I like the most in this episode. I'm sure it pained him to see his mom working like that but his mom probably feels the same for unable to provide him with what he may wants. Loving someone is hard. This also show that SW still is a teenager even when he always act the most adult-like btw the friends.

I dont mind much JH yield a bit in pursuing DS because he know Taek likes her. He is 18/19 y.o. Didnt we all did that before? They are friends. He is in a crossroad & thinking what will happen to their squad if he pursue her when Taek already said he like her. He is not backing away but contemplates. They grow up together & I'm sure he love Taek too especially when they are so used of babying him (not that he need that but he sure let them squad babied him imo). I want to see how he behave in next episode before calling it noble idiocy.

And I also didn't mind much with DS acting coy around JH. She just trying to tell JH that she likes him too, in actions. I think DR said something about girl acting different around the man they like in previous episode. The thing is JH is too busy thinking how not to be discovered/hurt Taek to notice DS's change. Or maybe he did notice but just didnt know how to proceed just yet. DS still act like DS around the other guys because she didnt have any romantic feeling towards them. And yes, that's include Taek. And that is way I think DS & Taek interaction seems more organic & real.

And Taek shows he is dependable when he need to. Since they babied him a lot, he didnt need to step up often but it doesnt means that he is not capable. He already operating in adult world earlier that the rest of his friends. You need more that baduk skills for that.

I still think Sunwoo's the husband. Omg. This is bad.
But I just can't stop thinking of the posibilities..
Bora noona will fail her grades bec. of him,and Sunwoo too.. and the whole neighborhood will know. They'll be separated forever and bec. of that Sunwoo will start rebelding and will date other girls.. ahaha. What kind of thinking do I have? I'm always giving comments like this.

#TeamJunghwan all the way!

I think why most people were wondering on why JH likes DS and vice versa, were because it was a repeating event on DS part. I didn't even once wonder why JH likes DS, because it was clear right from the start. The way he's denying about how DS grew up cuter, etc. It's clear on JH's sides on why he likes DS, the realization from childhood friend, that somehow attracts him more than just a friend.

As for DS it wasn't exactly clear. Yes she's more careful while she's acting around JH in the last few episodes. But making her crush shown was also what happens about SW. Starting from her friends telling her things. Sure, the things her friends says might be the key that makes DS looks at JH more, or in a new light. But still it wasn't enough. My thoughts so far is more like DS was actually likes the guy already but just in denial, or thinking that none of the boys saw her as a girl. Which is also why she was so happy and having high hopes when her friends says that SW likes her. But with JH she's a bit more careful because she might just likes him more than a friend since the beginning, but never really did saw JH from another view, that he too might also likes her.

I still believed that JH is the husband, not because how the the actor played it more like JH. But plot wise, JH is one awesome character, and they took time on telling his story. While Taek in the other hand, might be the conflict arc with how everyone is treating him. And hell, Taek is such an amazing character. But no I don't want to join the fanwar or shipping on either team. I will just be #TeamHusband lol

As much as I hated to admit it (please prove me that I'm wrong, team!) Taek has a high probability of dying. Gosh. Please writer God, don't make my Taekkie suffers. Well maybe this one occurs because I've been watching too many PBG's previous works in which he ended up either dying or dead and I hate it so freakin much. Lol

Thx for the recap. I really love this drama. They all are good actors. I still cant believe that in real life, bora is younger than sunwoo. junghwan is older than his hyung jungbong. i still dont want to believe that cry baby noeul is already in his 30s. i cant wait for the next episode. now i dont really want to know about who will be the husband (obviously junghwan), but i really curious who will be bora's husband, jungbong's wife, jungbong's future job, and will noeul end up marrying his girlfriend? i want to know about dongryong's story too. and my prediction is: one of them will be a doctor, because 1994's seureukki is 72ers (same age as noeul) so he (im sure it would be either junghwan or sunwoo) will be seureukki's senior. just my opinion. sorry for my poor english

I agreed, but I'm still on the fence about DS liking JH. DS acts the same way with SW when she thought he likes her. I think she likes JH because JH likes her is logical.
I realize that DS interacts with JH differently from the rest of the boys (pre-don't-go-to-the-blind-date) but there is no hint of her liking him. Unless the show holding in some scenes like what they did with SW-BR or the story haven't reached the point where we're privy to that info, I guess we just have to wait.

JH, that sweet boy continues to slay me with his thoughtfulness. He can be an ass but he always make up for it. Mom really raised him right.

DS's dad needs to stop buying unneeded things. I thought he would change after hearing what people call NE but he stays that way. It's so hard seeing his behaviour, when I've lived like that. I still love you Sung Dong Il Appa.

Oh yeah, I'm totally on board with OT3s. I love all 3 equally, and both JH and Taek are attractive in their own way. I just hope no one gets hurt, but that seems too much to ask for when we have love triangle situation

There is a difference. She never waited for SW before going to school, but she waited for JH thrice.

She did wait for Sunwoo, in which she stood together with Junghwan under two umbrellas in front of her Gate and Byeon Jin Seob as BGM (lol thé scènes are that mémorable). Then Sunwoo's Mom came out and told her Sunwoo already left. I think it's ep 4-ish.

He dropped out of school to play baduk as a pro. But this is not shown, it's already happened when the series starts.
